S a media brand Life & Style has been a bit of an surprise. We launched our newsprint publication in 2004 to howls of derision from competitors in local media circles who confidently predicted our imminent demise. After all, they were coming from a traditional print media perspective where things were done a certain way and we were changing the game.
Our premise was that good content – both pictorial and copy – would be key to attracting and retaining quality readership and quality readership would produce quality results for our advertisers. It’s a recipe that has delivered consistent results for the past fourteen years. We took the view early on in our publishing venture that we would prefer not to be associated with junk mail which was prevalent when we used the services of distribution companies to deliver copies to homes in parts of our distribution footprint. They would, unbeknown to us, bundle pamphlets and flyers with our paper in a kind of Trojan Horse exercise that was suspended as soon as we realised what was happening. The idea of littering the neighbourhood with unwanted paper was completely contrary to our ethos. We encourage those who want our publications to collect them from our stands when they are out and about, and in that way, we avoid wastage. We very seldom find unredeemed copies of our publications in the stands. The copies tend to go very quickly and because we have a two week top–up

cycle, our advertisers enjoy an extra week in the marketplace which gives them a decided edge over our weekly competitors. Our our glossy Business Directory – The Life & Style Bizbook – was another media product that broke the mould. We took the view that we would select the best businesses and services for representation in a well-designed and beautifully printed advertising booklet, and we would go so far as to endorse them too. We would distribute ten thousand of these through our branded stands and our advertiser outlets every four months. The Life & Style Bizbook has been a hugely effective advertising medium. Twenty one editions later, we are still endorsing our advertisers and offering intervention should a consumer be unhappy with the value or service they receive from any of our advertisers. This has proven extremely popular with both advertisers and readers and further underscored the value of the Life & Style media brand. The acquisition of a broadcast licence took the Life & Style media brand to a new level in the local market. When we launched Radio Life & Style broadcasting on 88.0FM locally and streaming via our website or our free download apps worldwide, advertisers in the region could now reach the market on radio at prices way below those charged by regional and national stations. We are now able to give our advertisers coverage in print, on air and also online. Our website, social media feeds and digital players all carry features and advertising content giving us a unique
advantage. We can now run a complete advertising campaign across a range of media platforms at prices the mainstream industry can only dream about. This allows local businesses in the Umhlanga/Ballito region to affordably access the market in a similar way to the major corporate brands with their multiple million rand advertising budgets. The Life & Style media brand is an enigma – it's interesting that a cottage industry start-up could not only hold its own against the corporate media companies but would develop unique affordable solutions for the local market that make sense. And there’s much more innovation in the pipeline. We look forward to continuing to keep you in touch, in tune and informed in this super part of the planet that we call home. KATHRADA
K
WADUKUZA Mayor Ricardo Mthembu led a memorial service for the late antiapartheid activist, Ahmed Kathrada last Friday, referring to him as a “distinguished leader who played a pivotal role in politics at the height of apartheid.”
He remarked, “His political work added more chapters to the Good Story that South Africa has been able to tell since the dawn of democracy. Until his death, he continued to play an exemplary role in the Democratic Parliament together with the late President Nelson Mandela. Khathrada earned himself through active political participation and action, a legacy that hinges on with some of the most celebrated heroes of our lifetime who suffered injustices of the oppressors yet made

good progress at advancing the struggle for self-determination of this country and her people and at achieving democratic ideals espoused in the Freedom Charter that we continue to enjoy today. The story of Kathrada should be aptly narrated with the mention of other struggle stalwarts including Nelson Mandela, Walter Sisulu, Oliver Tambo, Debi Singh, Govan Mbeki amongst others who were with him during their prison sentence on Robben Island”, said Mthembu. “As we celebrate Kathrada’s life-long journey, we should never lose sight of the future that beholds, the challenges that we face and the victories upon us, based on the good foundation that was laid by those we consider to be our heroes. On behalf of the KwaDukuza Municipal Council, we celebrate the life and times of Uncle Kathy for going through life using his highest potential despite the odds of apartheid. We are indebted to his gallant contribution in the liberation movement and we should protect his good spirit and legacy for the future generation to learn from him. His name is revered throughout the world as a man who believed in peace and as a person who upheld democratic ideals and we’ll remember him for his humble heartedness and devotion to humanity. May we all learn from Uncle Kathy”, said Mthembu.

MARRIOTT BALLITO BEATS Sugar Rush Park, Ballito
T
14th May 2017
his Mother’s Day, Sugar Rush Park in Ballito is set to come alive with the sweet and iconic sounds of Claire Johnston and her dancing, trumpet-playing, musically talented ensemble, as Mango Groove launches the all new Marriott Ballito Beats Music Series.
The Marriott Ballito Beats Music Series will add to an already community-based lifestyle in Ballito, as it brings people together in the open fields of Sugar Rush Park for the ultimate family entertainment. Locals will be able to enjoy time with friends and family, savor great food and beverages, take advantage of a fully supervised kiddies zone, and of course, listen to some of the best musical talent South Africa has to offer. Ballito Beats Series Director Stu Berry of Impi Concept Events believes that it was only a matter of time before Ballito demanded its very own music series. “In recent years, we have watched as Ballito has grown
significantly, both in size and popularity. And particularly because Ballito has become so lifestyle orientated, we felt there was just one thing missing up North: great, quality, live entertainment. So, we made a business decision to take the music to the people of Ballito. And so far, the interest for 2017’s four shows has been phenomenal. In addition, we’re really excited to get the series underway with one of South Africa’s most iconic bands: Mango Groove.” All shows will take place on a Sunday afternoon, with gates opening at 1pm. Mango Groove will kick off the inaugural Marriott Ballito Beats on the 14th of May. Locals can then look forward to the larger than life sounds of Freshly Ground on the 11th of June, the familiar favourites sung by The Parlotones on the 17th of September, and the unmistakable melodies as South African rock legends Arno Carstens and Ard Matthews pair up on the 29th of October. Sally Anderson, Head of Marketing at Marriott is thrilled to be a part of this new music series. “We are very excited to be included in this new venture of bringing family entertainment to the North coast.” From mountain biking to shopping, estate living, pristine beaches, quality restaurants… and now a world-class music series; Ballito officially has it all. With a booming community of over 40 000 people, and growing, the Marriott Ballito Beats Music Series promises to deliver on its promise to all locals looking for family entertainment right in their very own back yard.

FEEL GOOD STORIES AND IDEAS
Candida Overgrowth: What to do...
ch
9
STEPHANIE WILLS - LIFESTYLE HEALTH
C
andida is, quite simply, yeast. We all need a tiny bit of it in our systems to maintain balance in our digestive tract. However, due to a variety of factors (the most well-known of which is overuse of antibiotics), this balance can be upset. In turn this allows the candida to proliferate and wreak havoc in the body.
ER
m
Candida can make you feel simply awful, and includes symptoms such as lethargy, tiredness, inability to focus, nail fungus, bloating and indigestion, sometimes diarrhoea, skin issues like eczema, psoriasis and scleroderma, mood swings, irritability, depression, anxiety, thrush and other fungal infections, severe seasonal allergies and itchy ears, strong sugar and carbohydrate cravings and a tell-tale sign that you have a candida overgrowth is a white or green fuzzy coating on your tongue. (Ugh) Now that you’ve checked your tongue in the mirror, here are some practical solutions to addressing this annoying problem.
C
orrecting the Problem
Unfortunately, candida is incredibly adaptive, which means that it quickly becomes resistant to the more commonly used herbal treatments. The trick then is to cycle your supplements every few weeks or so.
Candida also has a tendency to protect itself with what’s called a biofilm. A biofilm is basically a protective barrier that the yeast surrounds itself with, and this then blocks antimicrobials and antifungals from reaching the cell. Only specific enzyme supplements are able to “eat through” this biofilm so that the antimicrobials and antifungals can do their job.
So how can Candida be brought under control? Keep things simple to bring candida under control: 1. Stop feeding it - A diet that is comprised of processed foods, excess carbohydrates, sugar, rancid oils, and commercial animal and dairy products containing antibiotics - all feed candida. Eliminate these
cycle these. Edible clays such as zeolite powder, bentonite clay, and mineral rich earth compounds such as fulvic acid are especially helpful. Biotin is also useful as an adjunct to antimicrobials by helping the fungi detach from the surfaces they cling to. 3. Add probiotics - It is necessary to take large doses of probiotics to help re-establish a positive balance of good bacteria in the digestive system.
Final Point
The process of bringing Candida overgrowth under control can take several months. It takes commitment and a multifaceted approach including diet and lifestyle changes, and a variety of different supplements. However, do not give up. It is a gift to have good health.

FEEL GOOD STORIES AND IDEAS
The Skin Experts Are Open for Business
MARRIED IN STYLE
CAID PONTUS
O
N the 27th of March, the
Dermalogica store in the new Ballito Junction Mall was officially launched and
the L&S team was invited to experience the next level of skin care therapy. This was an opportunity to learn and to be treated…and we loved it. Their full treatment room has lighting that you can adjust to your favourite colour, to set the mood for the treatments which is a really nice touch. I was impressed at how much there is to learn about skin care. I have never made much use of skin care products, and I hardly ever wear make-up because I prefer the natural look, but I was enthralled by the experience. My treatment included a face mapping, where they divide your face into 14 different zones, each with its own regenerative cycle and nutritional needs. For example, the moisturiser you put on your face, should never go on the underside of your eye, as that skin is much thinner and more fragile. In fact, you need a separate cream for that area, as that skin actually ages faster. After the face mapping, I was treated to a demonstration of different products, and how they work with my face. I loved both the treatment and the result, and my therapist was so bubbly and vibrant that I truly felt completely relaxed and comfortable throughout. hotographer Barry Bowditch and his team sent us these pics of Vanidha and Ricky Davis who came from Cape Town to be married at the Orchid House in Ballito on the 18th March.
The wedding and reception was expertly planned and executed by Jade, one of the best wedding planners in the business, and everything turned out perfectly. There were over eighty guests in attendance and everyone was overjoyed to be a part of this special union. The happy couple flew to Mauritius for their honeymoon and are now back in Cape Town with wonderful memories of the North Coast!

FEEL GOOD STORIES AND IDEAS
DIY Hair ? BRENDAN BROEDELET - INNOVATIONS HAIR ACADEMY
T
HE time constraints that accompany the dizzying pace of our modern life may make the option of buying a box of DIY hair-colour at the local supermarket more attractive than dialling the number of your favourite stylist but all too often this ends up being false economy, both in time and money. The truth of this was recently demonstrated by a client who, in the interests of convenience, experimented with a home-colour treatment. The brash and brassy result sent her hot-footing to the salon in search of a solution where, by applying a corrective violet tone, we were able to neutralize the metallic colour and rescue her from her homegrown horror but this is sadly not an isolated incident.
Clients often ask why their hair ended up an unexpected (and unwelcome!) shade after using a DIY colour - usually quite a bit darker than the desired result. The answer lies in the structure of hair and how chemicals affect it. Our hair contains primary pigment molecules in blue, red and yellow, which are present in varying concentrations depending on its colour. When the hair is bleached or tinted, these undertones become exaggerated. Naturally blonde hair has only yellow undertones, which tends to become brassy when bleached. Brunettes have both red and yellow undertones, while really dark hair has all three pigments, all of which respond differently to colour treatment. As a general rule, whether you are using a DIY or salon colour treatment, select a shade lighter than your natural colour. Permanent and semi-permanent hair colour contains toners to subdue the underlying pigments and counteract the
exaggerated undertones but the effectiveness of this does vary, depending on the quality of the product. Once you have achieved the colour of your choice, the challenge is to maintain it for as long as possible. The harsh rays of our African sun have an adverse effect on colour-treated hair, causing dehydration and premature fading. Hair products that shield the hair from damaging UVA and UVB rays are essential if you are to enjoy your colour-treated hair to the full. After about six weeks, you will have to treat your regrowth and it is important to do it correctly or you could end up with uneven colour and chemically-damaged hair. Start by applying the fresh colour to the roots only, leaving it on for the majority of the recommended processing time. Only then should you spread the dye through the rest of your hair to the tips, leaving it in for about ten minutes to freshen the colour. There are a variety of protein-enriched aftercare products available that are specially formulated to moisturize and condition colour-treated hair; using them will not only keep your hair gleaming with health but also prevent premature fading. A vibrant, healthy head of hair is eyecatching and guaranteed to lift your appearance – truly your crowning glory. But no matter how stylish your outfit or dazzling your accessories, a disastrous hairdo will inevitably detract from your overall look. It is well worth investing that extra time and money to consult a professional to ensure that you get the colour you dreamed of and enjoy feeling as beautiful as you deserve! Happy styling!

SPECIALISED TREATMENTS: •Unwanted hair - face & body •Sun-damage, sun spots, veins & pigmentation •Uneven & dull skin tone •Lax, wrinkled & sagging skin •Stern, sad or tired appearance •Volume loss •Fat pads & cellulite
Whilst the beauty industry is flooded with products, Lasersure uses only the most trusted, best researched, FDA approved, medical standard products to obtain the ultimate results for each client. The same applies when offering laser treatments. Cheaper laser or IPL machines make for less effective and often more risky laser therapy. Lasersure’s laser machines are top of the range and can be fine-tuned to treat any skin type because of highly experienced therapist capable of utilising precise setting. Plastic surgery has declined by 38% in the UK as clients prefer to seek alternative aesthetic treatments which cannot permanently change one’s appearance and can even be reversed. Ideally the outcome of aesthetic treatments should leave the person with normal expression, a natural appearance and certainly not with “banana cheeks”, “duck lips” or a “Botoxed look” Trust in the injector’s ability, experience and integrity is mandatory, and our ultimate goal at Lasersure.

Lighting it up BLUE on World Autism Day
T
he tenth annual World Autism Awareness Day was April 2, 2017. Every year, autism organizations around the world celebrate the day with unique fundraising and awareness-raising events.
The Dhaniram family on the North Coast has done a huge amount in this region to promote awareness. Their son, Mikhail, has autism. He is now 15 years old and making excellent progress at the Imbalito Hope College. His mother, Nirasha, is a psychologist and founder of the Imbalito Hope College and Connect Special Needs Forum. 12 years now and were proud sponsors and organisers of the Awareness Walk for Autism at People’s Park, Moses Mabhida Stadium for World Autism Awareness Day 2017. Their daughter, Milan, who is a second year student at Wits, is passionate about helping siblings in autism. Autism is a developmental disability that remains with a person for his or her whole life. This condition affects the brain's functions. The first signs usually appear before a child is three years old. People with autism often: • Find social interaction difficult. • Have problems with verbal and non-verbal communication. • Demonstrate restrictive and repetitive behavior. • Have a limited set of interests and activities.

Callebaut’s Minette Smith explained that their chocolate is made with the best sustainable cocoa beans of West Africa and cannot be found in retail stores but is used by chefs around the world. Being one who occasionally enjoys a chocolate bar I had no idea what would await my inexperienced chocolate taste buds with Fairmont Executive Chef, Dean Uren and his team guiding us through their menu. Taken into the unknown of chocolate food pairing each dish was carefully explained to broaden the mind into what exactly was being presented on the plate. Two items on the tasting menu stood out firstly the Avocado and chocolate paint with sushi rice, tempura spinach and ponzu particularly because I have never seen let alone tasted such a combination but again surprised by how fantastic it was, set the tone for what was to come, a clay oven camembert trussed with dark chocolate and honeycomb which made everything I have ever tasted wither in comparison to the explosion of flavour Chef Uren created in this dish. The evening was capped off with a white chocolate with cognac reduction and smoked dark chocolate dessert and the exquisite signature chocolate tasting that can only be described as death by chocolate. Fairmont Zimbali and their team hit the nail on the head with this menu and made diners realise chocolate is more than just picking up a slab of the shelf.

Would You Pay $40,000 For A Bicycle? Luxury Car Brand Bugatti Announces the Arrival of the World’s Lightest Bike
T
he luxury manufacturer behind the world’s fastest car has now created the world’s lightest bike.
The bike is made of 95 per cent reinforced carbon and weighs just 5kg, making it the world’s lightest bicycle. But the elite sports vehicle will set you back a staggering $39,000 Bugatti will release just 667 models in a range of colours later this year. The French company has teamed up with elite bike company PG to create the ultimate sports bike. The super-light bike is fitted with aerodynamic technology and all of its parts are handmade using ‘materials and methods otherwise found only in motor sport and aeronautic industries’. The bike is single-speed and features one chain, one seat stay and is belt-driven. A belt-driven bike is a chainless bicycle that uses a belt to transmit power from the pedals to the wheel. This has allowed the company to build a bike with the ‘lightest weight and highest rigidity possible’, according to Bugatti’s website. ‘Frame, fork, rims, handlebar, seat, seat post, crank and brake are made of the
highest quality carbon fibre available in today’s market,’ the website reads. The bike’s release will coincide with the arrival of the new Chiron supercar. ‘Upon request, customers of the supercar builder can have their bicycles matched to their own Bugattis,’ the website says. ‘Special paints, carbon in various colours, numerous types of leather and, of course, the Bugatti pearl oval make the Bugatti bike the perfect supplement for the 1,500 PS dream car.’ But the luxury bike is not intended for road use, the company said. ‘The special bike is a piece of sports equipment which is not intended to be used on public roads,’ according to the website.

Volkswagen Reveals Its Driverless Pod Concept That Acts as Your Personal Robot Chauffeur
I
t has been described as a cross between ‘an angry toaster and an old school Apple iMac on wheels’. But this bizarre-looking driverless pod concept is what Volkswagen believes will be the future of self-driving cars. Dubbed Sedric, the design was unveiled by VW ahead of the Geneva Motor Show this week. The firm said it also plans to launch more than 30 purely batterypowered vehicles by 2025. The German carmaker is trying to position itself at the forefront of new technologies in the wake of its diesel emissions scandal. The self-driving concept car - a so-called Level 5 vehicle capable of fully automated operation - is a precursor for more such models from the Volkswagen group in years to come, Chief Executive Matthias Mueller said on the eve of car executives’ annual gathering in Geneva. Users can summon Sedric with the touch of a button, voice control or with a smartphone app and it will take its passengers to their destination - so no need for a driver’s license. When inside, passengers can talk to Sedric about the destination, how to get there, the driving time and current traffic situation. Sedric can carry four passengers and could be used for ride-sharing fleets as well as for individual passengers. The autonomous car can drive children to school and then take parents to the office, look independently for a parking space or collect shopping.
‘It is the “Father” of numerous concepts for a new form of individual mobility. ‘Soon Sedric will also get “children” and “grandchildren” with the Group’s various brands’, according to the company. Internet giant Google was a forerunner in self-driving technology with its 2015 prototype vehicle, but has since been challenged by companies ranging from Uber to Apple, as well as traditional carmakers. Manufacturers and their suppliers are working on different technology suites - including cameras, radar and laser imaging technology lidar - to enable vehicles to drive themselves, but it will take years for these vehicles to come to market. Mercedes-Benz unveiled its fully autonomous F 015 luxury concept two years ago. However, Toyota has said it does not expect to see Level 5 cars in widespread use for another 10-15 years, while Ford does not plan to offer such vehicles for consumers until 2025 or later.
