T

HE launch of our new multimedia division at Life & Style has prompted me to learn some interesting new skills.

As a former video director I became very proficient in the use of what was at the time state of the art video equipment. This was partly because I found it liberating and partly to prove a point. Camera operators were often set in their ways and to find new ways to create visual magic, sometimes rules had to be broken. It was a maverick approach but one that often got results. We were the first production company in the country to shoot a commercial for cinema on digital video tape. This was the campaign to launch the Movie Club card for Ster Kinekor and Cinemark, the company responsible for advertising that made its way onto South African cinema screens at the time, was notoriously fussy when it came to quality. When the final result passed muster with flying colours, a new age of cinematography was born in this country. I was the creator of the first checkout channel video entertainment in supermarkets across the country and directed the first live multi camera, multi venue business broadcast for the Standard Bank - the first in South African broadcast history. A particularly innovative approach to a shoot for the launch of the Toyota Venture 1800 resulted in a Loerie Award – considered then, as indeed it is now, the highest recognition for excellence in this form of creative endeavour. But time marches on and…fast

forward a couple of years …here we are in Ballito. Ballito is not the centre of the creative universe. In fact, it is kind of the polar opposite in many ways which makes it a lovely getaway for creatives unwinding from the stress of digital overload. It does not, however, make it easy to recruit talent for a company like ours and we are constantly on the lookout for good people in almost every field from sales through to visual design, technical audio and video skills and on air presentation. If you fit the bill or know anyone who does, we’d love to hear from you. But I digress. Among the interesting new skills I was keen to acquire was mastery of the flying camera. Technology has come an awfully long way since I last operated a camera professionally. Back then stateof-the-art high definition professional camcorders cost more than the average family motorcar and were bulky too, requiring an array of ancillary equipment and operators to assist in their deployment. But now you can get a range of pocket sized devices that are capable of delivering unbelievably good images from almost any vantage point. And they can fly! I bought a comprehensive package online that arrived, ready to fly, in three days. The fact that I didn’t bother to read the instructions should have had no bearing on the outcome of my maiden test flight – the drone people said it was ready to fly, so off we went to prove the point. With automatic take-off and landing, what could go wrong? And

I clung to this thought as my newly acquired flying camera disappeared from Townsend Park heading in the direction of Australia. I later discovered that I was flying it backwards which would explain why it failed to respond appropriately. Luckily, true to their word, as soon as my drone lost contact with the controller, it shot up to a pre-designated height and, as if controlled by God himself, it returned to Townsend Park to gently land at my feet. I have subsequently read the instructions and have become quite competent as an aerial cameraman. I look forward to introducing you to some very interesting views of Ballito and environs as we introduce you to the best of what the area has to offer through our website, Facebook and YouTube channels soon. Tune in to Radio Life & Style 88.0fm for more details and watch this space!

FOR BEING HUMAN

1. You will receive a body. You may like it or hate it, but it will be yours the entire period. 2. You will learn lessons. You are enrolled in a full-time informal school called Life. Each day in this school you will have the opportunity to learn lessons. You may like the lessons or think them irrelevant and stupid. 3. There are no mistakes, only lessons. Growth is a process of trial and error: experimentation. The “failed” experiments are as much a part of the process as the experiments that ultimately “work.” 4. A lesson is repeated until learned. A lesson will be presented to you in various forms until you have learned it. When you have learned it, you can then go on to the next lesson. 5. Learning lessons does not end. There is no part of life that does not contain its lessons. If you are alive, there are lessons to be learned. 6. “There” is no better than “here.” When your “there” has become a “here,” you will simply obtain another “there” that will again look better than “here.” 7. Others are merely mirrors of you. You cannot love or hate something about another

person unless it reflects something you love or hate about yourself. 8. What you make of your life is up to you. You have all the tools and resources you need. What you do with them is up to you. The choice is yours. 9. Life is exactly what you think it is. You create a life that matches your beliefs and expectations. 10. Your answers lie inside you. The answers to life’s questions lie inside you. All you need to do is look, listen, and trust. 11. You will forget all this. 12. You can remember it whenever you want.

HRIS PRIOR is one of the most respected custodians of rock music in the country. Known universally as The Rock Professor, he started his career on Capital Radio 604 before moving on the Radio 5 /5FM where he carved out a late night niche that has never been equalled.

I first met Chris when I joined the deejay team at 5 way back in 1985 and now, thirty one years later, we are back together on a radio platform a little lower down the dial. Radio 5 /5FM broadcast on 98.0FM and Radio Life & Style is on 88.0FM. But now we also stream worldwide online so we can connect with listeners all over the world, many of whom remember those halcyon days when Radio 5 was huge and both Chris and I were household names. We may have moved on a few years, but the music remains as sharp and powerful as it was when it was freshly forged and you are going to love it! The Chris Prior Show will take to the airwaves again on 88.0FM in Ballito every Tuesday evening from 8 – 10pm. If you are out of range of our FM signal, you can stream it live on www.lifeandstyle.fm If you are a lover of classic rock, this is one show you are definitely going to want to catch.

NUI STUDIO has designed a lamp fit for the dim and sun-shielded garden apartments of the world, the living and working locations that are void of the light needed to grow lush plants indoors. The project is titled the Mygdal plant lamp, and is built3:33from mouth-blown 2014/05/27 PM glass and aluminum. The

by Nui Studio Light Your Space with Suspended Ecosystems plants placed inside this environment thrive on a c ompletely self-sustained ecosystem that needs neither natural light nor watering, with the installed LED lights sufficient enough to aid in photosynthesis for most plants. The name of the lamp is a tribute to the Danish hometown of glassmaker Peter Kuchinke, and translates to mean “fertile

soil.” Two minimal versions of the lamps were built, one to hang from the ceiling, while the other rests on top of a flat surface. Nui Studio was founded in 2014 by Emilia Lucht and Arne Sebrantke. The two met while studying industrial design at Muthesius Academy of Fine Art where they started dating and designing together. The creative duo is currently finishing their master’s degree at Burg Giebichenstein University of Art and Design. You can explore more of their furniture design and projects on Facebook.

EAT

YOUR UTENSILS

Edible cutlery might be the future W

e’ve seen it start to happen here and there – celebrity chef Heston Blumenthal has experimented with edible knives, napkins and more and recently The Grind cafe in Joburg started serving coffee in cups made from ice cream cones – but the new Bakeys line of spoons appears to be the world’s first real attempt at launching mass-produced cutlery you can eat. Narayana Peesapaty, the founder of the Indianbased company, came up with the idea for the range of edible eating tools when he saw people using khakhra (thin crackers) to scoop up food on a flight. His objective was to address a number of issues, including the huge amount of environmentdamaging waste caused by disposable plastic utensils and the fact that plastic is not good for human health. His alternative, sturdy cutlery made from rice, wheat and sorghum flour, is, in his own words, If you’re a little put off by the idea of a soggy, bready spoon sitting in your tea, never fear, Narayana has considered this and has made sure the cutlery stays firm in liquids for long enough for you to get through the meal. They also stay crisp on shelves for at least two years. Since the tools are edible, the company has made an effort to make them as delicious as possible by introducing various flavours, including sugar, ginger-cinnamon, black pepper and carrot-beetroot. Now that Bakeys is making edible culinary equipment a real possibility in the future, the concept seems a bit of a no-brainer. After all, we’re already using cutlery to eat with; why not eat it too? And what better way to get rid of a potential waste problem than consume it?

BIG LEAVES ARE BACK. The ubiquitous aspidistra and the Delicious Monster that the Victorians were so fond of has made a spiritual comeback. Today’s look is stripped down and deconstructed, often reduced to a collection of giant leaves in a bowl strategically placed for maximum effect. But the entire plant can be just as effective.

GROW HEALTHY, TASTY HERBS ALL YEAR ROUND

9 EASY-TO-GROW HERBS Basil (Ocimum basilicum) is the perfect partner for tomatoes in salads, sandwiches, sauces and pasta. It’s also the base for pesto. Bees love its flowers too. Bay (Laurus nobilis) leaves (usually dried) add depth to meaty dishes and aid digestion, especially of rich food. Clip the bush into an attractive topiary feature.

Chives (Allium schoenoprasum) are delicious snipped over food as a light onion-flavoured garnish or infused in oils and vinegars. Plants repel pests, multiply easily and tolerate light shade.

Garden mint (Mentha spicata) is more than a sauce for lamb. Its fresh flavour enhances salads, dips and dressings and is delicious with brinjals. Grow in pots to prevent it spreading. Oregano (Origanum vulgare) has a powerful flavour most associated with pizza and Italian cuisine. Use the strongly antiseptic leaves for treating respiratory infections.

Parsley (Petroselinum crispum) strengthens the immune system. Juice it up with fruit or veggies; use as a garnish or add at the end of cooking. Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis) lifts the spirits with its fragrance and is delicious with roast chicken, lamb and baby potatoes. It’s a good pest repellent too. Sage (Salvia officinalis) is an excellent first aid herb for treating bites and stings, sore throats and mouth ulcers. The leaves have a strong flavour; use it sparingly.

MONEY SAVERS Each week Pam Mills will be doing the rounds of the most popular supermarkets in the Greater Ballito area to find the bargains that will help you to stretch your household budget and make your Rands go a little further. These will be featured on the Consumer Watch slot on Radio Life & Style every Thursday at 4.30pm and appear in print each fortnight in this publication. She will also be offering useful hints and tips that will save you money and hopefully help the environment at the same time. The idea is to encourage you to shop locally and to support the local economy. If you have any ideas that will add value Email Pam on pam@docrra.co.za and let us help you in the quest for fairtrade and good value. or would like to share information with Catch Pam on Radio Life & Style 88.0FM on Thursdays at 4.30pm for Consumer Watch us, we’d love to hear from you. • Pay a little extra off your bond each month, whatever you can afford. It has a dramatic effect on the length of time you have to pay for. • Insure your pet: it seems to be more expensive to take your pet to the vet than to go to the doctor yourself! • Save on petrol by making a list of all the shops you need to go to so you won’t forget and have to go back • Don’t impulse buy, rather go home and have a good think about what it is you’re wanting. Do you want it or do you need it. Give yourself a cooling off period before making that final decision,

and shop around to see if you can get it at a better price • Drink more water and less juices and cool drinks. Much better for you and much cheaper! • Pass around your magazines. Arrange with a few friends to exchange and save a lot of money and get more value from them • When I am emotionally stressed, I go to the shops and spend money which makes me feel better. Don’t do it! For uplifting experiences, get involved in some kind of voluntary work, you’ll feel a whole lot better about yourself!

DON’T like following diets. I don’t like following the rules in general never mind in my own kitchen. So in writing this article, I thought about what I actually eat at home. I asked myself if I’m actually practicing what I preach as GOODNESS GURU.

I’ve been on an inner health and wellness journey for almost 15 years now. Some choices I’m making feel so

natural it feels like I’ve always eaten this way. But a recent trip back home opened my eyes to how far I’ve come. I was cooking with my Mom which always filled me with a sense of nostalgia and belonging. When my mother puts food in front of me she shows me that she loves me. So I would never think to complain or refuse to eat something she cooked. But I realized I would never have cooked those potatoes. I would never use that much bright orange cheddar cheese. I no longer eat shop bought bread. These and many more changes had crept in from the way I ate when I grew up to the way I eat now. Some changes I hadn’t even noticed I’d made for example when did I stop eating salad dressing and switch to just olive oil and lemon juice? Other changes like cutting out white flour were more conscious. I hadn’t made these changes all at once, they had crept in bit by bit over the years. But am I really following a diet. I know I don’t eat preserved food. I try to make everything from scratch. I’ve cut way down on Carbs but I’m not a big fan of red meat. How do I define my way of eating and how do I explain these changes to my Mom so I don’t offend her? Just eat Clean. That’s it. No junk, no preservatives, no refined foods. Just eat real food. I like those rules, they keep me calm. What about you?

H

APPINESS is a simple concept; yet, many people don’t realise it. We all want to be happy but we search for it in wrong places. Check out these 8 traps you should avoid if you want to be happy in life.

1. Gossip Gossiping about others won’t do you any good and will only make you feel jealous and bitter. A person who gossips is the one whose personal life is not fulfilling enough and he/she wants to know what is happening in other people’s life. 2. Negative thinking Thinking negatively is bound to affect your happiness since you are focusing on the grey areas of life, instead of positive emotions. Negative things keep you worried and disturbed all the time. 3. What others think about you Don’t wonder about what others might be thinking about you. You can never alter somebody’s opinion. But if you spend too much time on that and try to please all, you will eventually forget who you truly are. 4. Remembering troubles from the past You must forget what happened in the past and how it impacted your life. Do not think too much about it as you cannot change what has already

THINGS YOU MUST IGNORE TO STAY HAPPY

happened. Past troubles can affect a person badly if he/she refuses to move on. So forget the past, live in your present and focus on your future. 5. Holding onto resentment We all do it and then feel too stressed to lead a happy life. Holding on to resentment will simply intensify your hard feelings and negative emotions, making you feel sad deep down. You must learn to let go and forgive the other person for his/her wrong behaviour. 6. Arguing to prove you are right All of us cling to our opinions, whether we are right or wrong. There is nothing wrong in presenting your point of view. But one must be rational and listen carefully to what others have to say. 7. Nurturing huge expectations Let go of undue expectations - they can undermine your happiness as you keep looking for life’s little rewards where there is none. Learn to accept people for who they really are and forget what they can do for you. 8. Ignoring problems Do not avoid problems. Only those who are unhappy and scared ignore problems and feel tense when they become worse or get out of hand. It is always better to solve those issues in the very beginning to reduce your stress level.

Jaguar to make nine ultra-exclusive XKSS sports cars lost in factory fire 59 years ago – and each one will cost in excess of £1m

A

LMOST 60 years after being destroyed in a factory fire, Jaguar will complete the nine XKSS sports cars it was due to assemble in 1957 when the blaze struck.

The models, conversions of the iconic D-Type race car, will be hand-built by Jaguar’s specialist Classic division with each one meeting the exact specification as they appeared 59 years ago. Fancy one? Well you best have deep pockets, as the British carmaker is valuing the cars at more than £1m a piece. Jaguar’s calling the nine cars ‘ultraexclusive continuation models’. They will replace the nine cars lost in the infamous Browns Lane factory fire in Coventry in 1957, all of which were due to be exported to the US. Just 16 of the 25 re-purposed race cars were ever built, making the nine remakes incredibly collectible today.

Tim Hannig, director of Jaguar Land Rover Classic, said: ‘The XKSS occupies a unique place in Jaguar’s history and is a car coveted by collectors the world over for its exclusivity and unmistakable design. ‘Jaguar Classic’s highly skilled team of engineers and technicians will draw on

decades of knowledge to ensure each of the nine cars is completely authentic and crafted to the highest quality. ‘Our continuation XKSS reaffirms our commitment to nurture the passion and enthusiasm for Jaguar’s illustrious past by offering exceptional cars, services, parts and experiences.’ The nine ‘lost’ XKSS sports cars have already been earmarked for a select group of established collectors and customers,

all of whom will be forking out in excess of £1m for the privilege of owning one. Jaguar’s Classic team will use the expertise gained during the construction of the recent Lightweight E-type project with each XKSS individually built by hand at Jaguar’s new Experimental Shop in Warwick. Every car will be constructed to the same specifications as those first 16 made in 1957 with every aspect fully certified by Jaguar. They won’t be hanging around either;

the first deliveries are expected to take place early next year. The world’s first supercar You can forget about the Ferrari LaFerrari and McLaren P1 – the Jaguar XKSS was considered the first ever supercar. That’s because all 16 built in the fifties were genuine race cars converted to legally be used on the road.

Following Jaguar’s three successive Le Mans victories in 1955, 1956 and 1957 with the all-conquering D-type, 25 of the racers remained unsold with Jaguar desperate to recoup the cost of making the expensive bespoke vehicles. Company founder Sir Williams Lyons took the decision on 14 January 1957 to re-purpose the remaining D-types into road-going cars with several external modifications. These adaptations included the addition of a new higher windscreen, an extra door on the passenger side, taking away the divider between driver and passenger and the removal of the famous fin behind the driver’s seat. At the time, it was the closest thing you could get to a race car for the road, and it was achingly beautiful to boot. Even the great Steve McQueen bought one and used it as a daily driver. Referring to the car as the ‘Green Rat’, the Great Escape and Bullitt actor’s car toured the United States as part of the Allure of the Automobile Exhibit in 2010 and 2011 before returning to the Peterson Automotive Museum in LA where it remains on display today.
