I
T was quite a weekend and I am still recovering…but it was huge fun!
On Saturday morning we were up at the Ace Karting track in Ballito to record more Ballito celebs being put through their paces in our SMD Fastest Around The Track challenge. This feature is rapidly going viral as the amazing videos are uploaded to our YouTube channel. If you haven’t seen it yet you can watch the launch and The Stig’s incredible performance on www. lifeandstyle.fm Each week a new challenger has a go at doing the fastest lap around this really fun circuit and their top time is revealed on the Motoring Show at 5pm every Friday on 88.0fm. Saturday saw popular Estate Agent, Greg Kruger putting his pedal to the metal while the Life & Style video team captured the action on camera from every angle. My drone performed beautifully as the eye in the sky, giving us a super range of overhead perspectives and luckily the weather was perfect. It can be a bit challenging keeping a drone under control if the wind picks up and there are plenty of apocryphal tales of wayward flying machines and hugely embarrassed operators in circulation. One spectacular incident that springs to mind is the demise of a drone deployed to shoot footage of last year’s big surfing competition in Ballito. Initially it went up and behaved perfectly, recording the surfing action on the waves as the assembled crowd watched in awe. Then something went wrong and it plunged into the sea in a rather undignified finale. These mistakes are both expensive and
R E S TAU R A N T
embarrassing and serve as a caveat to anyone embarking on similar ventures. I am happy to report that all went well on this occasion and the footage was worth the effort. Ilembe Chamber of Commerce captain Cobus Oelofse also took to the track on Saturday and did some spectacular driving of his own to the delight and amazement of those in attendance. I look forward to seeing the edited footage of both challengers in action online soon and I promise that we will keep you informed so that you can watch them too. Last Friday we had Linc Church’s Dylan Jahnig as a studio guest in the radio studio following his attempt to capture poll position on the Fastest Around The Track leader board. He did brilliantly, considering he has a day job and hasn’t spent a lifetime honing his driving skills on the racetrack. You can watch him in action on out You Tube or Facebook channels right now. Remember, each week we feature another Ballito celebrity having a go in this action-packed, adrenaline pumping motoring feature proudly sponsored by the SMD Motoring Group. After the morning video shoot we were off to Simbithi Country Club to set up the sound and décor for the Afrikaans Dance. We have a weekly Afrikaans music show on 88.0fm every Wednesday evening between 6 and 8pm presented by Steve van Greunen and the dance was established as a spinoff from that. It was a sell out and Simbithi Country Club did a super job catering for the event. Steve van Greunen kept the dance floor busy with the popular tunes that his audience loves and the food and liquor flowed. Great fun was had by all and we

have some super ideas to make the next one even better – oh yes, there has to be a next one…according to Steve, this one could have been sold out three times! So, we’ll hopefully see you at the next one…or on the racetrack…or both!

AVE you ever considered letting your property? With the interest rates currently at 10.5% and the property market slowing down, home owners may find it hard to sell their properties in today’s market. Furthermore municipal rates and other maintenance and holding costs are not going down…… With so many stories of bad tenants going around, home owners have to be aware of all the pitfalls. But with the right advice and people to take care of your property the right way, here’s how you can turn your investment into hard currency:
company. Do they have good financial systems in place and are their Trust accounts in order and audited. • Make sure they do a thorough background inspection of all potential tenants, finding you the right match according to your needs. • Financial companies like OOBA offer excellent Rent protector Insurance at a fraction of the monthly rental income, covering potential damages caused by tenants. • Lastly: always get everything in writing. Verbal agreements are easily forgotten and can cause you lots of headaches in the future.
Good Advice to Landlords:
Well maintained properties attract: GOOD Tenants Good tenants pay GOOD Rental Good rent brings GOOD Income Giving you Peace of Mind, and more money in your pocket.
• Choose the right company to manage your rental agreement. It is essential to understand that a rental agreement is a legal document requiring expertise to comply with the law. Make sure the company representing you is registered with the Estate Agents Affairs Board and that the agent has legal Fidelity Fund Certification to rent out you property. • Unqualified and unlicensed “agents” could do you financial harm when selecting tenants not qualified or suitable for your property. Did you know that legally only licenced rental agents with a valid FFC certificate may claim commission? You can report unlicensed agents to the Estate Agents Affairs Board. • Do a thorough pre- inspection together with your rental agent to determine the condition of the property and to arrange all maintenance needed in time to find you a decent and qualified tenant. • Ask around and find out about the track record of the letting

MONEY MATTERS – SO, WHERE TO FROM HERE?
OR those following local politics and economics, the last quarter has been somewhat of a “colourful” time for our rainbow nation. Now, if there’s one thing that the market hates, its uncertainty and we had bucket loads of it. It is therefore no surprise that we were suitably punished in the wake of Finance Minister Nene’s sudden departure and all the subsequent revelations surrounding the Gupta’s alleged puppeteering hands in cabinet restructuring.
The one question on the lips of so many investors at the time was: Should
I be going offshore? Now don’t get me wrong, having exposure to assets outside our borders is an essential component to any investment portfolio and one that, if rightfully included, should have bolstered your portfolios over the 2015 period. With that said, however, any investment decision driven by emotion (fear being the strongest) is likely to do more damage than good. And fear was undoubtedly wildly at play. Thankfully, sanity prevailed and with Treasury back under the steady hand of Minister Gordhan, the Constitutional Court ruling on Nkandla as well as the cumulative response to the likes of Gupta run Oakbay Resources by Corporate South Africa,
our markets have not only settled but rebounded. From its lowest point at the end of January to 15th April, the market has gained an impressive 15.27%. At the same time the currency has regained some favour and broken the R14.50/$ rate (from a low of R16.78/$) and is testing the R20/£ level. Foreign investors are queuing up to take advantage of the current bond rally, having already purchased R25.6bn of the nation’s bonds so far in 2016. This represents the best start to a year since 2010 and a turnaround from the final quarter of 2015, when they dumped R1.5bn of debt. So with so much “bad news” plaguing our daily news feed, this

renewed stability (however fragile) is a welcome change and should at least provide investors some relief. For those who were considering investing more offshore in the wake of the chaos, your patience has been rewarded and, if anything, the opportunity to expand your investment horizon has become more attractive with the strengthening rand. Where and how is always the tricky part and one to hopefully cover in the coming weeks. SHAUN LATTER I CFP® Old Mutual Private Wealth Management Cell: 084 552 8837 Email: slatter@privatewealth.co.za

he Easter school holidays were abuzz with sporting activities and our students were extremely busy. What was so impressive was the level of competition of involvement. We had students attending the SA Surf Lifesaving Championships, the SA Biathlon Championships, SA National Karting, Level 1 & 2 Regional & Level 3 National swimming galas, with three students qualifying for SA Youth.
A major achievement was that of one of the students qualifying and participating at SA Senior Nationals which was the qualifying event for the Rio Olympic trials. One of our Form 1 girls conquered a huge milestone in her athletics career by achieving the fastest time for U16 – 400m females in the country. National competition aside Ashton was privileged to attend the St Dunstan’s Easter Festival in Gauteng for the 3rd consecutive year. This Easter Festival now hosts more than 600 1st team players incorporating Rugby, Boys’ & Girls’ Hockey and Netball. There were a few schools from Zimbabwe, with Ashton being the only KZN representative. Tournament directors ensured that
organisation was of a high standard, and our students and coaches returned not only celebrating phenomenal results, but experienced an exceptional event. The Rugby boys and the Hockey girls were undefeated, whilst the Boys’ Hockey team won 3 and drew 1 of their six games. Last week our 1st Team Hockey Girls performed with true H.S.C.C (Heart, Spirit, Character, and Courage) and won the North Durban Regional section of the Spar tournament which qualifies them to proceed to the Regional finals in July. Currently, the new sports playing fields on the new land is developing at a rapid pace. The culvert has been upgraded and very soon, our new parking/ drop-off zone will complete, and this will alleviate some of the traffic congestion at the main entrance. The two properties will be linked via the culvert under the M4. Phase 1 will be the full sized turf wicket cricket oval and two full sized rugby/soccer fields. I look forward to the future growth of Sport at Ashton on our new facilities.

HELPING YOU TO S T R E T C H YOUR HOUSEHOLD BUDGET
STARTING WITH THE POSITIVE!
Firstly, thanks to Kevin Stevens for sourcing eye drops for my dog and having them delivered from the Midlands as well as supplying with some to keep me going. The second really positive I found very exciting as I’ve been wondering for a long time why this doesn’t happen in supermarkets. Have you ever looked at the product signs above the aisles and not seen what you’re looking for and thus had to walk up and down trying to locate it? Well, I would suggest as many shoppers as possible visit the Spar down in the village. I hadn’t been in there for a while and was so pleasantly surprised to see not only clear signs above each aisle, but also as you look down the aisles there are signs all along, big enough to read from a distance, indicating exactly where to find the products you need. Well done Spar, you are the flagship in this innovative customer service and I hope all supermarkets will follow your example. I visited the store yesterday and apparently it is under new management, and it looks as if there will be big changes there.
5
ON TO THE NOT SO POSITIVE;
Apparently the import duty on wheat has been increased by 34% to protect the local market, which is unable to supply enough for our needs in any case. I have had two price errors in one day’s shopping this week- please, please check your till slips. The first was when I bought a notebook which was clearly marked on the back, among other countries prices as R24. I was charged R29,99 and queried it. I was then told “oh sorry you need R5 refund” I then pointed out that I needs R5.99 refund and the excuse was that the assistant had miscalculated. How can you be working with money and not be able to deduct R24 from R29, 99? The second one was when I checked my slip and saw I had been charged R19,99 for a pineapple clearly marked R15,99. On returning for a refund (on principle) I asked why there was a difference and was told there were two prices on the computer. So that was just me, imagine if it happens to a lot of shoppers.
MONEY SAVERS When preparing potatoes to boil (e.g. for mash) I was taught to cut the potatoes in quarters (depending on size). After many, many years of repeating this learned -from-my-mom method, I suddenly thought that if I sliced them instead they would cook a lot quicker, which they do. Now I’m sure there are people who will say “Oh didn’t you know that?” but I’m equally sure there are many who will say they hadn’t thought of it! Please and I’ve mentioned this before, do check sell by dates. I read there was a small store in the KwaDukuza area that has been selling cool drinks past their expiry date. When you buy milk, check you’re getting the freshest on the shelf even if you need to look towards the back of the shelf, and even tins should be checked, as should all the store specials.

YOU'LL WANNA SEE THIS TOO-OO-OO!
FUNNY, SCARY AND AS MAGICAL AS THE ORIGINAL, DISNEY'S JUNGLE BOOK REMAKE IS A TRIUMPH.
Brian Viner
W
HEN beloved old classics are re-made, or reimagined, it’s natural to wonder why they bothered. In some cases, such as the recent Dad’s Army, that was the nagging question not only all the way to the cinema but also all the way home.
It was with some trepidation, therefore, that I sat down to watch The Jungle Book. The 1967 Disney film, despite all the genius that Pixar and others have unleashed on us since, remains my all-time favourite animation. Phil Harris’s Baloo and the Sherman brothers’ songs are as much a joy now as they ever were. So for Disney to have another crack is a bit like Michelangelo daubing paint on a second chapel ceiling. It might be a great job, but won’t it detract from the original? Happily, it doesn’t at all. The combination of live action and computergenerated imagery works an absolute treat, and director Jon Favreau (whose eclectic CV includes Iron Man and Chef, in which he also starred) teases a nigh-on perfect performance from young Neel Sethi. The ten-year-old New
Yorker makes an even better Mowgli than the pen-and-ink version. Wisely, Favreau has not tried simply to add CGI bells and whistles to the original animation. There are only two songs, albeit the best two (The Bare Necessities, and I Wanna Be Like You), and overall this is a darker take on Rudyard Kipling’s Just So stories, to which really young children should be exposed with caution. Even I was scared by the vengeful tiger, Idris Elba’s brilliantly voiced Shere Khan. He exudes sheer menace, although you can’t help feeling Shere Khan has a point about the cute mancub growing up to pose an existential threat to the jungle way of life. But the environmental message isn’t hammered too hard, and the familiar story unfolds more or less as we know it. Mowgli has been raised by friendly wolves, but when Shere Khan reveals his murderous intent, Bagheera the panther (Ben Kingsley) undertakes to lead the boy back to the man-village. On the way, Mowgli is befriended by laid-back Baloo the bear (Bill Murray, obviously), who has saved
him from the deadly coils of Kaa the snake (Scarlett Johansson). Then comes the ape kidnap, so brilliantly drawn in the original film and beautifully realised here, too, as Mowgli is carted off to share the secret of ‘man’s red flower’ with King Louie, not an orang-utan this time but a vast Gigantopithecus (long extinct, but once the world’s largest primate). He is voiced — pricelessly, as a mafia godfather — by Christopher Walken. The screenplay (by Justin Marks) is a delight, with enough Disney cutesiness but never too muc And there are jokes aplenty for grown-ups, as when Baloo turns to a pesky armadillo and mutters: ‘You have never been a more endangered species than you are at the moment.’ Some scenes, such as the King Louie abduction, and an earlier buffalo stampede, are breathtakingly executed. But in a way what the film does best are the

&
(comparatively) simple things, starting with the basic anthropomorphising of animals. Walt Disney didn’t live quite long enough to see the original, but it would have enchanted him. This, however, would have amazed him. So, does it eclipse the 1967 film in my affections? It doesn’t, and couldn’t. After all, there’s no Colonel Hathi, pompous commander of the elephants; no lugubrious, Beatles-inspired vultures; no Phil Harris. But it will make a wonderful family outing, all the same.

FIT INTO YOUR GENES – THE DNA-BASED DIET OF THE FUTURE KIM MARTIN - LIFESTYLE HEALTH
T
HE personalised approach to diet may finally be upon us. A simple cheek swab might be the key to unlocking your health, and taking your nutrition strategies to stay young and healthy to the next level.
Research (and practical experience) shows us that there is no “one size fits all” approach to diet and lifestyle. Individuals respond better to a personalised approach versus population-based guidelines. Geneticsbased dietary advice has been shown to contribute to greater compliance, weight loss and increased blood sugar control. We are all uniquely different, which is why when your best friend lost 20kgs on the latest diet fad, your waistline remained unchanged following the exact same eating pattern. WHAT IS THE NEW APPROACH?
Healthcare practitioners with accreditation in nutrigenomics (the study of the interaction between genetics and nutrition) can offer to take a non-invasive mouth swab for DNA analysis. In just 2 weeks, your DNA is sequenced and the results are ready for interpretation and translation into a nutrition plan. Your personalised diet and nutrition approach will be based on one, or a combination of, four specific tests namely: (1) DNA Diet, (2) DNA Health, (3) DNA Oestrogen, and (4) DNA Sport.
WHAT ARE THE TESTS? DNA DIET
DNA Diet is designed to provide the healthcare practitioner with the tools to design a personalised healthy eating program, based on the client’s individual genetic makeup. This test also provides insight into how each individual reacts to diet and lifestyle factors e.g. carbohydrate intake, saturated fat intake, and exercise intensity. DNA Diet tests well-researched gene variations, which have an influence over metabolism, eating behaviour, and absorption and storage of fats and carbohydrates. Analysis and interpretation of these gene variations, allows for the provision of a dietary pattern best suited to the client. This dietary pattern will fit in with one of the three most effective healthy eating plans i.e. the Low Fat Diet, the Mediterranean Diet, and The Low Carbohydrate Diet, which will then be tailored for you by a Dietitian. The DNA Diet test is however, not a diet plan, and as such will not contribute to weight loss unless translated into a healthy eating program by your healthcare practitioner. DNA HEALTH
DNA Health is the test for you if you want to know how to optimize your wellbeing and health. This provides guidance in terms of dietary choices and, where necessary, targeted nutrition supplements tailored to offset any nutritional deficiency based on specific gene variations. DNA Health aids your
healthcare practitioner in establishing the optimal nutrition prescription for good health, decreased risk of disease, and longevity. DNA Health currently tests for 36 gene variants involved in the following processes linked to risk for disease: • Cholesterol metabolism and heart disease risk • Bone health and osteoporosis risk • Vitamin B metabolism and cancer risk • Insulin sensitivity and diabetes risk • Inflammation and oxidative stress • Detoxification • Responsiveness to foods including lactose-containing foods, caffeine, salt and blood pressure control, and iron overload disorders. DNA OESTROGEN
Did you know that more than 75% of breast cancers occur in women with no family history? An increased lifestyle exposure to oestrogen is a strong risk factor in the development of breast cancer. The DNA Oestrogen tests for gene variants that have been shown to have influence over how oestrogen is processed in the body, as well as if the processing of oestrogen (and related compounds) is healthy and efficient. DNA Oestrogen examines the following: Genes influencing the metabolism of oestrogen and related compounds The impact of high-risk gene variations Strategies for intervention in carriers of high-risk genetic variations Individual risk factors associated with hormone-replacement therapy, oral contraceptives, bio-identical hormone supplementation and in vitro fertilization

With the knowledge of how your body reacts to specific diet and lifestyle factors, you can mitigate the risks for diseases of lifestyle and boost your health, sports performance, and longevity. Practitioners can use DNA Oestrogen results in order to mitigate breast cancer risk in women with high-risk genetic profiles. DNA SPORT
DNA Sport takes a look at biological factors influencing the response to training, and overall performance. These factors include inflammation, blood flow, respiration, energy production, fuel metabolism and soft tissue remodelling. Knowledge of the variations in genes relating to these biological areas can be of huge value in terms of optimizing a training programme to exploit potential advantages. The insight gained can also be used to ensure the best-suited training and nutrition choices to prevent injury and boost recovery. DNA Sport is a test suitable for individuals ranging from the elite performance athletes, to the recreational athlete really looking to maximize their fitness potential and reach peak conditioning. Beginner athletes or those starting on a weight management protocol will also get benefit from the DNA Sport test. FINAL THOUGHTS

DIY HAIRCOLOUR – NOT ALWAYS A WINNER BRENDAN BROEDELET - INNOVATIONS HAIR ACADEMY
T
HE time constraints that
accompany the dizzying pace of our modern life may make the option of buying a box of DIY hair-colour at the local supermarket more attractive than dialling the number of your favourite stylist but all too often this ends up being false economy, both in time and money. The truth of this was recently demonstrated by a client who, in the interests of convenience, experimented with a home-colour treatment. The brash and brassy result sent her hot-footing to the salon in search of a solution where, by applying a corrective violet tone, we were able to neutralize the metallic colour and rescue her from her home-grown horror but this is sadly not an isolated incident.
Clients often ask why their hair ended up an unexpected (and unwelcome!) shade after using a DIY colour - usually quite a bit darker than the desired result. The answer lies in the structure of hair and how chemicals affect it. Our hair contains primary pigment molecules in blue, red and
yellow, which are present in varying concentrations depending on its colour. When the hair is bleached or tinted, these undertones become exaggerated. Naturally blonde hair has only yellow undertones, which tends to become brassy when bleached. Brunettes have both red and yellow undertones, while really dark hair has all three pigments, all of which respond differently to colour treatment. As a general rule, whether you are using a DIY or salon colour treatment, select a shade lighter than your natural colour. Permanent and semi-permanent hair colour contains toners to subdue the underlying pigments and counteract the exaggerated undertones but the effectiveness of this does vary, depending on the quality of the product. Once you have achieved the colour of your choice, the challenge is to maintain it for as long as possible. The harsh rays of our African sun have an adverse effect on colour-treated hair, causing dehydration and premature fading. Hair products that shield the hair from damaging UVA and UVB rays are essential if you are to enjoy your colour-treated hair to the full. After about six weeks, you will
have to treat your regrowth and it is important to do it correctly or you could end up with uneven colour and chemically-damaged hair. Start by applying the fresh colour to the roots only, leaving it on for the majority of the recommended processing time. Only then should you spread the dye through the rest of your hair to the tips, leaving it in for about ten minutes to freshen the colour. There are a variety of proteinenriched aftercare products available that are specially formulated to moisturize and condition colour-treated hair; using them will not only keep
your hair gleaming with health but also prevent premature fading. A vibrant, healthy head of hair is eye-catching and guaranteed to lift your appearance – truly your crowning glory. But no matter how stylish your outfit or dazzling your accessories, a disastrous hairdo will inevitably detract from your overall look. It is well worth investing that extra time and money to consult a professional to ensure that you get the colour you dreamed of and enjoy feeling as beautiful as you deserve!
ling! Happy sty

GET RESULTS AT 3 IN 1 LIPOSLIM
3
IN1 LIPOSLIM is a franchise concept with the Ballito clinic being the first to open in KZN. The first clinic opened in 2013 in Gauteng, to date there are approximately 12 clinics nationally and one in Mauritius.
Owner of 3in1 Ballito, Brenwin Henman, has extensive experience in the beauty industry, spanning 20 years and has specialised experience in laser treatments and therapies. The Ballito clinic is owner driven, with Brenwin overseeing all client treatments herself. She believes that her hands on approach and her genuine care in helping clients achieve their weight loss results is what makes her different to her competitors. She provides a comfortable, professional and discreet environment where clients feel at ease coming for treatments. Brenwin measures her success on the results of her clients.
The 3in1 concept is based on a 3 step philosophy. STEP 1: Analyse – an accurate and advanced
analysis is conducted. Body composition, metabolic rates, fat mass vs muscle mass are all measured. This provides clients with an accurate starting point for their weight loss programme. STEP 2: Treatments – standard treatments include lipo laser and sauna. The laser used is a cold, non-invasive laser which allows for penetration 7cm down into fatty layers and works to liquefy the fat cells. This “liquid fat” is then pushed into our lymph system to be expelled / flushed from our bodies. After this procedure, you go into our special fir sauna dome, which uses infrared deep heat technology. The dome is heated to up to 75 degrees. Through the intense sweating, all the liquefied fat as well as any toxins your body may be storing are released and sweated out. This treatments assists in speeding up the metabolism, relieves joint & muscle aches and pains and burns Brenwin Henman 600 calories in half an hour! STEP 3: Homecare – a range of slimming products is available. All products are 98% natural work to reduce fat and cellulite in conjunction with a healthy eating plan and exercise. Brenwin has just launched a “winter slim down campaign” to encourage people to use the colder months of winter to get their bodies summer ready. Fantastic discounts will apply to all standard slimming packages from April to July. At 3in1 your initial consultation and body analysis is free, with no obligation to sign up. Contact Brenwin today to book your consultation or find out more details.

THE THINGS THAT DARKEN THE HEART. LORNA BOWMAN
T
HE slow conscious working with the body in the yoga way proves to us that what seemed impossible becomes possible. Don’t be too definite in your assessment of a situation.
Things are in constant flux – what seems insurmountable today may seem quite inconsequential in a month. Think about it – things are always changing. When something upsets you is the anguish it is causing you really worth it or are you exaggerating it in your own mind? When things go wrong we feel so cheated, we feel insulted, we build resentment, we blame – it’s all so normal and all such a waste of your precious time. Let go of blame and resentment sooner and sooner and eventually it won’t even arise – no matter what! Step back – it’s never as bad as you think it is. Accept that you have self-seeking tendencies and don’t like it when things don’t go your way, then you can laugh at yourself and smile and try again. We are told we should do well so have to prove what heroes we are enjoying a clear mind and dropping the need to impress shows great progress. Striving for a deeper understanding requires you to question how you have seen things in the past. Yoga helps hugely with this. You may have thought your life was just fine doing very little, spending hours in front of TV, getting up late, generally inactive. Then the class starts to tweak previously unused muscles and you realize what a joy the burst of energy brings! Changes take place throughout your life; your body feels light and listens to you. You feel more connected. You laugh at the incident that seemed
like such a big deal and wasn’t. You’re living in the world more, not always inside your head and bowled over by your own thoughts all the time. The little frown between your eyebrows disappears – Yotox – not Botox! Nothing we do is without consequence so be alert in your behavior. That doesn’t mean being fake or suppressing your emotions. Do you respond to everything instantaneously? Think how often the response to a situation could have been positive instead of negative. Don’t just be purely reactive without question. One of my favourite yoga people left their shoes here and the dog ate them. She laughed without hesitation when I told her. It was so lovely and genuine and no one had to feel bad. It’s easy to take the opportunity to make the other person feel bad. A joyful spirit lets it go and laughs! Draw the dark thoughts out and just toss them away. A yoga class reminds you that your most enduring assets are your body and your health and there’s really nothing without those! No one can take it away from you and you can’t give it to anyone. Yoga claims that you will become free of all the external concerns that cause such disturbances and generate such anxiety! Believe it and stop getting into a state – it doesn’t mean you don’t care – you can care deeply yet remain unruffled. Flexibility of body creates flexibility of mind to help you see things in an eternally positive light. The negatives just disappear. You too can laugh when the dog eats your shoes – if they are Jimmy Choos put them in the box in the top cupboard – only a saint could laugh that off. Namaste. 072 885 6376
