s Ballito continues to develop at a cracking pace, there is growing concern about the impasse with regard to the Ballito taxi rank. Many people are asking why the temporary taxi rank at the heart of the Ballito CBD has not yet been relocated. From what we have been told, a substantial amount of cash has been allocated to the project by the KwaDukuza Municipality, a better site has been secured and a commitment has been obtained from developers to fund the connecting roads required for the project. And yet, despite all of this, there is no sign of any action in this direction.
M
The current location outside the Sangweni Tourism Information Centre is patently too small to service the demand and the potential for drama here is enormous. Because the “rank” is so small, operators have to busk it. Traffic is constantly interrupted by illegal lane usage, passengers have to queue in the open, covered by dust when it’s dry and soaked when it rains and pedestrians haphazardly cross busy traffic lanes to and from the rank. The temporary portable toilet facilities on site are hopelessly inadequate for the huge numbers that congregate here. Litter in the form of plastic packets, food wrappers, empty bottles and containers, fires, the washing of taxis and informal trading literally at the gateway to the beaches all contribute to an increasingly negative image of the town for tourists and holidaymakers and ultimately this affects the local economy. The Dolphin Coast Taxi Association is the only association legally authorized to pick up passengers in Ballito. Other Taxi Associations may enter the area to drop off passengers but must leave empty – crazy though it may seem, this is the way the industry functions and when operators flout the rules, violence generally follows. The National Government has recently issued a directive to municipalities to tighten regulation and security at all taxi ranks to ensure adherence to the rules. Ballito obviously presents a problem in this regard because you can only effectively regulate and secure formal taxi ranks and we don’t have one yet. One would therefore imagine that this would be a

priority for the municipality on the eve of a local election. So, where does the problem lie? As Chairman of the Dolphin Coast Residents and Ratepayers Association I was summoned to a meeting with ward councilors and representatives of the Dolphin Coast Taxi Association last week to try to establish a way forward. On the surface, there should be no obstacles to getting this rank built and operational, but just below the surface there are a multitude of problems. Among these it would appear that the land earmarked for this development is yet to be transferred to the municipality in a complicated deal that no one has so far been able to untangle and the money allocated by the municipality for the project has been redirected to build a community hall. Where does this leave the Taxi Association, commuters, citizens of Ballito and the local economy? That’s a very good question and one that I hope to answer shortly following a series of meetings with relevant role players scheduled for the coming week. I have a feeling it’s going to make interesting reading so, watch this space! Welcome to another issue of Life & Style also available online at www.lifeandstyle.fm

Worried About Your Investments? Shaun Latter – Quaestor Wealth Management
W
ith business confidence down, the vulnerable rand hitting a 14 year low against the dollar and the stock markets about as predictable as a toddler on a sugar high, it’s hard not to get caught up in the negative hype. The obvious question on most investors’ minds (and rightly so) is, “What does this mean for my investments”. Of course, if we break it down further the real question at play here is, “What does this mean for my financial future and should I be taking any drastic action?” It is at these turbulent times that many churn out their portfolio in search of safety
and certainty. Unfortunately, most will do so at the expense of their long term wellbeing. Does this make you a poor investor? No, not at all - it makes you human. The study of behavioural finance and the impact our emotions (and, in turn, our decisions) have on our investment success is well documented and quite telling. In short, we can be our own worst enemy. This has given rise to Goal Based Investing (GBI) whereby, rather than merely trying to capture the maximum return (which can bring its own set of challenges), your assets are positioned in a way that serves your own specific goals and lifestyle needs. I recall an interview with Matt Damon who played the role of Francois Pienaar in the movie “Invictus”. He speaks of meeting Francois for the first time and starts
unpacking all the intense training he had been doing in preparation for the role – everything from weightlifting to boxing to functional fitness, cycling and more. All very impressive. Francois listened and stared back somewhat quizzically and (in his trademark accent) replied: “Why didn’t you just play rugby?” Sometimes we search in vain for the next “big thing” or are wooed by slick marketing jargon when what is really important is that your investments are arranged in a way to ensure your needs are met reliably and comfortably. tress makes us abandon our commitments to healthy eating, scientists have found. It seems when the going gets tough, we are more likely to comfort ourselves with a pastry rather than a piece of fruit. Researchers at the University of Zurich put people watching their weight under stress: immersing their hand in ice water for three minutes. They were then presented with a choice of one unhealthy snacks such as cake or a doughnut and a less tasty snacks including a banana or broccoli. The subjects were recommended to eat the healthier item, but were told they were free to choose either. The scientists found that the 29 individuals who underwent the stressful ice bath treatment, considered ‘taste’ more important than ‘health’ when it came to their snack, and indulged in the unhealthy option. Brain scans also found that the stressed participants showed patterns associated with loss of self-control in the brain. The investigators say that their study indicates that even moderate levels of stress can impair self-control. Todd Hare, one of the authors said: ‘This is important because moderate stressors are more common than extreme events and will thus influence self-control choices more frequently and for a larger portion of the population.’
He added: ‘One interesting avenue for future research will be to determine whether some of the factors shown to protect against structural brain changes following severe stress--such as exercise and social support--can also buffer the effects of moderate stress on decision making.’ The authors note that in both humans and rats, the edge can be taken off stress by indulging in ‘rewarding stimuli’. They also note that a common theme of stress research is that when stressed individuals focus on the here and now rather than future goals. The research is published in Neuron. Previous research by the University of Konstanz, in Germany which tested how much ice cream individuals ate when they suffered a social rejection found that not all stressed people indulge. The previous study classified people into ‘skippers’ who avoid food when stressed and ‘munchers’ who indulged. However, when faced by a positive experience, the ‘munchers’ ate less and the ‘skippers’ ate more.

Why Grandma Was Right Kim Ashleigh Martin, RD - Lifestyle Health

efore additives, preservatives and flavourants were added to foods to make them tasty, there were good, old-fashioned broths. By the end of this article, you will be convinced that you need to include these into your diet, and will want to thank Grandma for her infinite wisdom in giving us these golden bowls of goodness.
Specifically, I want to re-introduce you to the bone broth. Slightly different from a broth, a bone broth is made with the leftover bones and the small amount of meat clinging to them. See the recipe at the end of the article to clarify how to make this delicious dish.
The Benefits of Bone Broth: 1. Joint Health Old folklore advised people to “eat what ails you and in this case it seems to be true. Bone Broth contains several nutrients that help strengthen your own skeletal system. Did you know that our bones are close to 50% protein? During the cooking process, the collagen from the bones and joints gets broken down to gelatin. Gelatin provides the raw materials for us to build our own connective tissue, and delivers a very interesting benefit for rheumatoid arthritis by helping to stop the immune reaction in its tracks. Further than the gelatin and proteins, bone broth contains both glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate, which are well known to help with joint pain and preventing osteoarthritis respectively. 2. Gut and Immune Health For leaky gut syndrome specifically, a cup a day works miracles, but bone broths are also good for protecting non-leaky guts. The gelatin in the bone broth (found in the knuckles, feet, and other joints) contains a vital nutrient, glutamine, which provides the primary fuel for all the cells
in your gut lining, and seals up any holes. This helps cure chronic diarrhea, constipation, and even some food intolerances. 3. Bone Health We know that our bones are made up of minerals. These minerals actually leach into the water when we are preparing our bone broth. When you drink that glorious cup, you are actually giving yourself a good dose of bonebuilding phosphorous, magnesium and calcium! 4. Skin Health If we ever locate the fountain of youth, we may find that the water is actually bone broth. The collagen content of bone broth boosts the radiance of your skin, hair and nails, and can actually keep you looking younger for longer. 5. Sleep Health We know that sleeping well goes a LONG way towards feeling well, and bone broths can also help with that. The glycine content of bone broth has been shown to help improve both sleep and memory. Aside from these 5 fabulous benefits, a lot of people report improved energy levels on bone broths. Not to mention that this is the most economic meal you can prepare! Use your bone broth as a base for soups to give a delicious flavor, or drink it straight as is and enjoy the benefits.

How to Make Your Bone Broth What you need: - Leftover bones from your meat dish prepared at home; or ask your local butcher for a bag of bones (you may even get them for free!). You may choose to first brown the bones in a pot slightly, otherwise leave them as is. - Any leftover vegetables or even vegetable off-cuts and skins (except the bitter ones like sweet peppers) - Any herbs lying around at home unused. - Vinegar (preferably apple cider vinegar), about a quarter cup is sufficient. What to do: - Pop all the ingredients into a big pot of water and lightly simmer for 6-8 hours (or 2-3 hours in a pressure cooker). Basically you want the bones to be as soft as possible because that means you have gotten lots of minerals out into the water. - Strain out all the bits - Enjoy immediately, or separate into containers and freeze for later use.

In our extended Women’s Day feature we recognise the courage and strength of South African women and in particular, those women who risked everything for peace and freedom. Celebrate their victory with us in remembering National Women’s Day.

t is so satisfying when a client puts on the dress she will wear on her wedding day and sees herself as a bride for the first time. In that moment the hundred odd hours we have spent, cutting, sewing, hand stitching... and sometimes crying and bleeding, are all worth it. Designing and making a wedding dress for someone is a challenging and rewarding process that we just can't get enough of.
My mum and I are the duo behind the Julia Ferrandi design studio and we work hand in hand to create every design. I am the big thinker with the design ideas while my mum (Lyle Cronje) is the technical wizard (and often voice of reason) who makes it all come to life. We specialise in bespoke bridal wear and partner with each client to create the dress of their dreams that fits perfectly and makes them feel fabulous. Things to consider when having a dress custom made 1. Ask yourself how you would like to feel in your dress? e.g.: Are you a relaxed girl who wants to feel comfy and kick off her shoes? 2. What feature you would like to show off in your dress? e.g. your gorgeously toned back from all those kettle bells classes? 3.Research, research, research. Find pictures of dresses you love to help communicate your thoughts with your designer. 4. Choose a designer whose design style you love. This will guarantee that you are happy with the end result and enjoy the process. 5. Lastly make sure you feel comfortable with your designer. Trust is crucial and will make the whole process less stressful. Getting married is stressful enough. Getting a dress made is the fun bit!!!

Love Reality!
Happiness Is Wanting What You’ve Got. Lorna Bowman
B
elieving we deserve certain things gives rise to unrealistic expectations which become pernicious and make us unhappy with our lives as they are! Wow! How’s that for swallowing the dictionary?
But seriously, it came to me in a quiet moment just soaking up the glorious winter sunshine on my patio. Call it meditation, call it what you will.
Everything falls into place when you take the time to just be still. So maybe the great philosophers thought of it long before I did but its times like this when it’s real and meaningful not just words on a page. That self-help book isn’t going to do much if you just read the words. The great moments are when you actually get it. Throw yourself into your health – promoting peace-giving yoga practice with new delight. Let go of the selfinduced notions of what it takes to make you happy. Only inward contemplation will release the misery. Yoga helps you discover the synthesis of opposites – body bends
forward, body bends back, one posture releases the next one pressures. This understanding helps you accept it can’t just be pleasurable all the time. If you spend your life in a permanent state of reasonably comfortable nonmovement just doing the bare minimum you never do anything to stimulate the all important nerves and ductless glands. You’ll never have Prana – life force flowing through you. Neither Prana nor hormones can be sold in tins and bottles! Life is the property of living beings and cannot be synthesized in factories or laboratories. Stop being conned – the raw materials have to be fed into the human body and the life in it manufactures the vitamins and hormones. Pumping oxygen into the nostrils of a corpse will not make it breathe, although when alive, that very body needed oxygen and utilized it to live. The glands manufacture hormones
and only they can do it. Keep the glands in a healthy state and they will not fail you. Don’t believe you deserve good health – set about achieving it for yourself. You have no “health provider” other than yourself and the choices you make. Strengthen the source of the nerves which is the brain and the conductor, the spinal column. Doesn’t mean you’ll never catch a cold or grow old but your powers of resistance and endurance will be greater. Stop with the expectations and dive deep within. If you don’t look after yourself properly – start! The system of yoga enables you to prevent illness in youth and in old age it will help you to ignore illness. There’s nothing worse than an old person ravaged by old age and completely absorbed by their ailments. Don’t ever be one of them! Namaste.
Pilates on the Deck Tash B Pilates had an activation outside the studio as a charity fundraiser with Linc Church. It was all for a good cause and lots of fun was had while they raised thousands of rand – well done Tash and the team!

flat iron treatment
Brendan Broedelet -Innovations Hair Academy
T
here’s something about the sleek fall of smooth, straight hair that speaks of sophistication (and whispers seduction) and for centuries women have spent a considerable amount of time and ingenuity on finding ways to tame their tangles and constrain their curls. In 1912, Lady Jennifer Bell Schofield developed a hot iron with two plates and a hinge – a prototype of the modern flat iron – but it was not until the 1990s that this life-changing gadget became commercially available. Before then, girls who wanted to woo their beaux with their long and lustrous locks had to run the risk of scorched hair and cricked necks as a trusted friend painstakingly ironed their hair, section by section, on an ironing board with a clothes iron. Nowadays, a flat iron is a standard part of any girl’s grooming kit but it is worth remembering that hair straightening tools are not standardised and therefore not all are equally effective.
A good quality flat iron may cost a little more but you will be investing in the health of your long hair; short cuts may well lead to a short cut! A few pointers are: • The thickness of the layer on the plates, usually ceramic, will determine how evenly the heat is distributed and how smoothly the iron will glide through your hair, preventing snagging and damage. • The heating element of a good quality iron will reach the required temperature quickly, with the heat spread evenly over the plates and maintained at a consistent level. This will reduce the amount of time spent ironing your hair to achieve the desired result and reduce heat-damage. • If you intend to iron wet or damp hair, make sure that your flat iron is a wet-dry iron, or you will run the risk of boiling the water in the hair shaft, causing the hair to rupture and split. While manufacturers of quality flat irons maintain that a good device will impart an infusion of negative ions to your hair, keeping the individual strands healthy and minimizing frizz, it is still imperative to use a heat protection
product to reduce the risk of cuticle damage. These products not only protect the hair cuticle from erosion but serve to ‘seal the style’ in the face of environmental factors such as heat and humidity. Make sure that you choose a protection product that is water soluble, as non-soluble compounds build up a residue on the hair shaft over time, damaging the hair when heat is applied. It is probably wisest to consult your stylist before purchasing both a flat iron and a heat protection product as not only will he or she be familiar with the different merchandise (and their pros and cons) but also with your particular hair-type and its needs. Happy styling!

BLOCK OUT THE WORLD
T
he $400,000 Rolls Royce Wraith with a Smart Stereo to Block out The Sound of The Outside World
From Elvis to John Lennon, musicians have flocked to the Rolls Royce as their car of choice. Now, the firm has created a special limited edition model to honour them - complete with a smart stereo system. The Rolls Royce Wraith boasts an 18 channel stereo system, and microphones that can monitor outside noises to help block them. The Wraith 'Inspired by Music' has 'the most exhaustively designed sound system in automotive history,' according to Rolls Royce. They say the sound is so good it is creating 'the most exclusive music venue' that delivers an unrivalled aural experience. The Bespoke Audio system was created from scratch by a team of the world's very best automotive audio engineers. The two-year development process saw the team work closely with RollsRoyce interior designers to ensure the system was perfectly tuned to the interior of the cabin. Interior designers had to consult with the Chief Audio Engineer before making any changes. It resulted in a 1300W, 18 channel system comprising two highly powerful bass speakers, seven tweeters and seven
mid-range speakers. Two 'exciter' speakers hand-fitted in the car's headlining play a vital role in bringing the sound to the listener at ear-level; ensuring the output perfectly imitates the way music is experienced in a live setting. Microphones constantly monitor ambient and exterior noises and will adjust volume and tone settings automatically to ensure no 'external agent' detracts from the user's listening pleasure. The Wraith is a four-seater with a 624-horsepower 6.6-litre V12 driving its rear wheels, able to leap from zero to 120kmph in 4.4 seconds. It also uses GPS for the transmission, and the eight-speed ZF automatic gearbox relies on positioning to pick gears in advance, gauging the situation down to the exact stretch of road. It also boasts a heads-up display, voice command support and the infotainment system's multi-touch trackpad. 'Wraith 'Inspired by Music' appeals to those looking to Rolls-Royce for unique and creative motor cars,' said Torsten Müller Ötvös, CEO of Rolls-Royce Motor Cars. 'It’s effortlessly cool appearance complements the superior Bespoke Audio system; the contemporary use of copper creates an atmospheric setting for the

most encompassing music system on the market.' The car has a specially developed 'Lyrical Copper' exterior paint finish, presented with a blend of brushed and polished textures elegantly hints at the use of copper in only the very best audio systems. On opening the car's coach-doors attention is drawn to re-imagined speaker grilles in copper theme, and engraved with the words 'Bespoke Audio'. The door panniers and floor mats have been crafted from finely-woven leather to add an additional depth of tactility to the car's interior cabin. Copper-coloured door inserts, which start at the front of the cabin before tapering at the rear, have been included in the design to emphasise Wraith's characteristic internal curves. extending the car's theme. The same copper tone extends to Wraith's signature seat bullets. The fastidious detail that went into the development of the car's soundsystem is employed in every facet of the construction of the car. For example, the chaplets on the clock have been designed and meticulously crafted with a combination of warming copper and silver, whilst the radial lines of the outer bezel playfully emulate the look and feel of vinyl records. Wraith 'Inspired by Music' completes a trilogy of striking and distinctive Bespoke Collections. The first, Wraith 'Inspired by Film' celebrates Rolls-Royce's long association with the silver screen whilst, Wraith 'Inspired by Fashion' allows customers to commission a true piece of automotive haute couture inspired by the materials and motifs of cutting-edge high fashion.
