KZN’S FAVOURITE READ
from the editor
L
ately I have become painfully aware of how sedentary my lifestyle has become and I have made a firm resolve to do something about it. I am now at an age when every week seems to bring news of the passing of someone I used to know and this is a little unsettling. It’s not much fun being constantly presented with reminders that time is rushing by and that the sand in the hourglass is rapidly depleting. After all, there are still so many places to go and things to do…
While I still feel 25, the face in the mirror is a reality check and, while I don’t check the mirror nearly as much as I used to, there is no escaping the fact that I have put some mileage on the clock. So, I have recently decided to embark on a mission to delay the inevitable. This entails getting fit and shedding the winter coat – easier said than done, I’ll admit, but that’s where we are so lucky living in Ballito. There are huge numbers of people who are generally out and about cycling, walking, running, swimming and making me feel uncomfortable. So, as the cheerleaders say, if you can’t beat them – join them! I have recently joined the Sports Zone Running Co’s group of happy people that meets most early mornings outside their store at the Ballito Junction Shopping Centre before setting off on a convivial morning run (or in my case, a rather exuberant walk). This gets the day off to a
cracking good start and I can strongly recommend it, despite the fact that I must admit to being initially coerced into leaving the warm and delightful confines of our comfortable king sized bed before sunrise to be there. They call it a fun run and fail absolutely to see that as a contradiction in terms while it is glaringly obvious to me. However, I am slowly beginning to see the benefits of this early morning sortie and I am optimistic that there
will be some fun to be had further down the road. And most recently I have been invited to take part in a twelve week challenge at the famous Ringside Boxing Gym in Ballito. I, and my co presenter on the afternoon drive show on Radio Life & Style, Patricia Malemia, have signed on to a three month programme that is more or less guaranteed to shed the pounds if you stay the course. And therein lies the rub. The regime is vaguely reminiscent of first phase basics that emotionally scarred me for life, starting with the compulsory strip down for photographic purposes. The instructions were to report in a Speedo (or similarly scanty attire) for the

“before” pics. I am sure that there are many perfectly normal people who wear speedos as swimming attire of choice but I am not one of them so I might have stumbled at the initial hurdle. Luckily I was able to find more conventional underwear that passed muster and I came through the photo session relatively unscathed (although I will die if the pics ever find their way into the public domain!) So, for the next three months I will be going through a metamorphosis on a journey that I anticipate will not be without its moments – you know those moments – but if all goes according to plan, I will emerge (maybe even in the ubiquitous speedo) for the “after” pics. But fear not, I have no intention of inflicting them on you…unless the results are sensational and then…all bets are off! New Battlefield Radio
Uses Soldier's BONES to Transmit Messages and Lets Them Listen To Each Other While Wearing Ear Defenders If you weren’t an optimist, it would be impossible to be an architect. – Norman Foster
Google’s Glass gadget, which went on sale in 2013, uses bone conduction to relay information to the user through a transducer which sits beside the ear
A
new radio for soldiers which uses bone conduction technology to aid battlefield communications has been developed by British arms manufacturer BAE Systems.
The prototype harnesses the body’s natural ability to transmit sound through bones, transferring messages directly from the soldier’s armoured helmet to the inner ear. Troops use radios to speak to each other and understand the environment around them but they also need to protect themselves from loud noises such as gunfire and explosions. BAE’s engineers have adapted technology often used in commercial headphones and hearing aids for military use. It means soldiers can wear sound proof ear protectors and still receive audio messages. It works because the human body can transmit sound through bones as well as via sound waves travelling through the ear canal.
centuries. An early version of bone conduction was demonstrated by Italian mathematicians in 1550 who proved it was possible to transmit sound through a rod held between the teeth. This knowledge was later put to use in 1711 by the British-designed tuning fork. German composer Ludwig van Beethoven then found a way in 1798 to hear music by attaching a rod to his piano and clenching it in his teeth. By 1876 the first commercial hearing aids were being developed in Italy. Now BAE scientists have managed to improve the performance of bone conduction devices while also shrinking their size and weight to the size of a five pence coin. BAE’s principal scientist Mohammed Akhmad said: ‘With this system, soldiers can safeguard their hearing with ear protectors whilst still clearly receiving military voice communications, to enable them to

perform their roles efficiently and safely.’ Mr Akhmad added the key to the concept was that BAE had been able to use off-the-shelf technology and apply specialised scientific expertise to slash the time it takes to develop a new prototype. ‘In doing so, we have developed an audio system that offers enhanced capabilities for the military.’

Here is a list of 10 things which, if you give up on them, will make your life a lot easier and much, much happier. We hold on to so many things that cause us a great deal of pain, stress and suffering – and instead of letting them all go, instead of allowing ourselves to be stress free and happy – we cling on to them. Not anymore. Starting today we will give up on all those things that no longer serve us, and we will embrace change. Ready? Here we go: 1. Give up your need to always be right. There are so many of us who can’t stand the idea of being wrong – wanting to always be right – even at the risk of ending great relationships or causing a great deal of stress and pain, for us and for others. It’s just not worth it. Whenever you feel the ‘urgent’ need to jump into a fight over who is right and who is wrong, ask yourself this question:
“Would I rather be right, or would I rather be kind?” ?”
Wayne Dyer.
What difference will that make? Is your ego really that big? 2. Give up your need for control. Be willing to give up your need to always control everything that happens to you and around you – situations, events, people, etc. Allow everything and everyone to be just as they are and you will see how much better will that make you feel.
“By letting it go it all gets done. The world is won by those who let it go. But when you try and try, the world is beyond winning.”
-Lao Tzu
3. Give up on blame. Give up on your need to blame others for what you have or don’t have, for what you feel or don’t feel. Stop giving your powers away and start taking responsibility for your life. 4. Give up your self-defeating self-talk. Oh my. How many people are hurting themselves because of their negative, polluted and repetitive self-defeating mindset? Don’t believe everything that your mind is telling you – especially if it’s negative and self-defeating. You are better than that.
“The mind is a superb instrument if used rightly. Used wrongly, however, it becomes very destructive.” -Eckhart Tolle 5. Give up your limiting beliefs about what you can or cannot do, about what is possible or impossible. From now on, you are no longer going to allow your limiting beliefs to keep you stuck in the wrong place. Spread your wings and fly!
“A belief is not an idea held by the mind, it is an idea that holds
the mind.” -Elly
Roselle
6. Give up complaining. Give up your constant need to complain about those many, many, maaany things – people, situations, events that make you unhappy, sad and depressed. Nobody can make you unhappy; no situation can make you sad or miserable unless you allow it to. It’s not the situation that triggers those feelings in you, but how you choose to look at it. Never underestimate the power of positive thinking. 7. Give up the luxury of criticism. Give up your need to criticize things, events or people that are different than you. We are all different, yet we are all the same. We all want to be happy, we all want to love and be loved and we all want to be understood. We all want something, and something is wished by us all. 8. Give up your need to impress others. Stop trying so hard to be something that you’re not just to make others like you. It doesn’t work this way. The moment you stop trying so hard to be something that you’re not, the moment you take of all your masks, the moment you accept and embrace the real you, you will find people will be drawn to you, effortlessly. 9. Give up your resistance to change. Change is good. Change will help you move from A to B. Change will help you make improvements in your life and also the lives of those around you. Follow your bliss, embrace change – don’t resist it.
“Follow your bliss and the universe will open doors for you where there were only walls.” -Joseph Campbell
10. Give up labels. Stop labelling those things, people or events that you don’t understand as being weird or different and try opening your mind, little by little. Minds only work when open.
“The highest form of ignorance is when you reject something you don’t know anything about.”
-Wayne Dyer

Care About Your Hair! Hair Loss Causes & Solutions
Stephanie Wills - Lifestyle Health
A
RE you waking up with a pillow covered in hair? Is your shower drain permanently clogged? Does brushing your hair make you anxious? There’s no doubt about it, hair loss can be devastating!
While even the fullest head of hair loses anywhere from 50-150 hairs a day, excessive hair loss is definitely a symptom that raises concern. If you are experiencing this kind of hair loss, do not delay treatment. It may be a sign of a deeper imbalance and if left unchecked, may lead to other symptoms or even the permanent loss of your hair. Here are a few potential causes of hair loss, what tests should be considered and different approaches to stopping hair loss and restoring growth. Types & Causes of Hair Loss Lifestyle factors such as stress (physical and emotional), poor diet, long term use of birth control pills and medication, lack of regular exercise, heavy exposure to environment toxins etc all play a role in these types and causes of hair loss: Patchy: You may have a cortisol imbalance, a deficiency in B vitamins or zinc or heavy metal exposure. Thinning: You may have a hormonal imbalance, such as thyroid. Top of the head only: Testosterone, progesterone, cortisol or estrogen may be out of balance. Total body hair loss: DHEA, blood sugar regulation or circulation issues. Balding all over: Could be a sign of poor circulation or a deficiency in protein, essential fatty acids, B vitamins, silicon or zinc. Get Tested! Rather than play a guessing game, the following tests are highly recommended to help you figure out the cause of your hair loss: Iron levels Thyroid Inflammation Testosterone, dihydrotestosterone (DHT) FSH, LH, Estrogen, Progesterone Cortisol, DHEA Blood sugar levels Heavy metal toxicity Liver and kidney function NOTE: If your doctor has told you that all of your labs are normal, but your hair loss persists, I recommend seeking a second opinion. How to Stop Hair loss & Regrow Your Hair
Nutritional Steps:
Making dietary changes is the very best first step to stop hair loss and naturally balance hormones. Begin adding phytonutrient dense superfoods that are loaded with anti-oxidants, trace minerals, healthy fat & protein sources
(ask any one of the ladies from Lifestyle Health for advice). Next: - Remove sugar, allergens (gluten, dairy etc) & processed foods from your diet - Eat zinc rich foods such as pumpkin seeds, eggs, red meat & sunflower seeds - Eat silica rich foods such as cucumbers, celery, bell peppers, and sprouts - Eat iron rich animal foods (especially if you have a deficiency) - Eat the whole egg together (not just the whites) to maintain healthy biotin absorption - Consume 1-2 teaspoons apple cider vinegar before meals to help raise your stomach acid, which will allow you to absorb more vitamins and minerals. - Eat plenty of essential fatty acids from salmon or sardines as well as chia seeds and walnuts.
Recommended Supplements
B vitamin complex. If you’re serious about having healthy hair then get the best B complex you can afford. Particularly one that contains methylcobalamin (B12) and methyltetrahydrofolate (folate). I also highly recommended that you supplement with extra biotin. This B vitamin effectively prevents hair loss and thinning by increasing scalp circulation and rejuvenating hair follicles which in turn helps stimulate hair growth (often recommended for chemotherapy patients). Biotin can be found naturally in Swiss chard, liver and goats milk. Adaptogenic herbs. These are herbs that help regulate cortisol (stress hormone) as well as balance your hormones overall. My favourites are Rhodiola and Ashwagandha. Saw Palmetto. This herb helps prevent the conversion of testosterone to DHT (the form of testosterone that is responsible for male pattern baldness and hair loss in women with PCOS). Zinc also prevents this conversion and may be a useful addition to your supplement regime. Vitamin E. Required to nourish damaged hair and to prevent breakage. It aids the body’s ability to manufacture keratin within hair strands to reduce breakage. Horsetail. Named for its long brush-like appearance, this herb is used extensively for brittle or unhealthy hair. Horsetail is rich in a nutrient called silica which strengthens bones, nails and hair. Silica fortifies hair follicles thereby lessening breakage and thinning. It is also increases shine and body to lacklustre hair.
Other
Rosemary essential oil is excellent to use topically to promote hair growth and increase scalp health. When applied to the scalp rosemary increases circulation and helps to gently remove excess sebum and dandruff, which can inhibit healthy hair growth. Exercise! It sounds crazy but
yes, regularly moving your body can improve your hair health. Not only does exercise improve circulation and reduce stress, the right kind can even balance hormones and stabalise blood sugar levels. The type of exercise that is best varies from person to person. If you are stressed you may do better from yoga and pilates. If you have blood sugar or hormonal imbalances, you may need more strength training. Just please avoid any and all forms of “chronic cardio” which can exacerbate hormonal imbalance and exhaust your adrenals!

His regular Chef’s Table experiences have become wildly popular and continue to set the benchmark for lovers of fine food and wine
Elbert du Plessis Golf Manager: Simbithi Country Club Elbert du Plessis is the manager of the Simbithi Country Club that offers a unique 18-hole golf development with a layout comprising 13 par-3's, four par-4's and one par-5. Contained within the par of 60 and Simbithi's 3902 metres from the back tees, Peter Matkovich has crafted a wonderful and varied collection of short holes, complemented by five very good longer holes. With the ability to go round in under 3 hours, this terrific "short course" will give your straight game and iron play a thorough workout. The front-nine has a very natural and partly tree-lined feel, with a densely wooded creek running alongside many holes. Wetland areas not only create some threatening water hazards, but are also home to a fabulous array of chattering birdlife. On the longer back-nine, which contains the two longest par-4's and the good-length par-5, the terrain is more open and the holes equally stunning. The plunging short par-3 17th, to perhaps the smallest island green you've ever played is just one of many gems to be found around this intriguing layout. Bunkering, as you might expect, plays a key role in the majority of holes. With excellent quality maintenance and many natural features, Simbithi is a delight to play, even if it lacks the length of a typical new 18-hole development.
Peter Coulon Environmental Manager: Simbithi Eco Estate Peter has a wide range of responsibilities at Simbithi including landscaping, the management of the natural areas, trails, environmental compliance, encouraging environmental friendly projects like recycling and ensuring residents are aware of the environment. His passion for conservation is epitomized by a quote that he loves: “Treat the earth well: it was not given to you by your parents, it was loaned to you by your children. We do not inherit the Earth from our Ancestors, we borrow it from our Children."

State of Mind! COLLIN MBONGWA Personal Trainer

I
happened to remark to someone that I am not a busy person. I could not have got a more shocked response if he had awoken to find himself in a busy street in Delhi after falling asleep in Salt Rock. I think it’s not so much the fact that I am not busy that caused such shock but the fact that I am prepared t acknowledge it. It goes against social norms not to be super busy.
Ask yourself what you will look back on in your life with joy. It is not going to be an extra day at the office. Yes, yes, I know you have to earn a living but it cannot possibly occupy all your waking time. If you can’t switch off mentally, trust your body to do it for you. The physical side of yoga requires such concentration it will drown out your internal task master allowing your brain to recharge. You don’t have to be at the peak of fitness all the time but you do have to be aware constantly of what’s happening and how you are doing. If you are stooped and feeling stiff it’s not going well. Take a deep breath – if you have to cough you are unused to good breathing. Lift your chest, open your throat and sing – if it’s a croak your neck is compromised and you are losing it! Separate out the things you have to do and the things you should do. Yes, we all have menial tasks we have to perform but they are not going to change
your life. Making time to exercise and assess will turn your life around and bring you happiness. Another month or year ships by filled up by “have to’s” when you don’t take care of the “shoulds” you lose all sense of control. Surround yourself with people who approach life differently. Choose to have a life as well as a career. When we choose to do one thing, we are also unchoosing something else. Unchoose the luxury, or so you think of lying in bed late and choose to get up and come to a yoga class, even if it’s Saturday and we ran around all week. Summer is coming, the sun will be up at 4:30 – 8:00 is the middle of the day! Stop answering emails and putting everything on facebook – rather take the time to have a quiet meditation. It is not your hundreds of facebook friends who make you happy but the few people you cherish most. If you are rushing from one futile activity to the next, STOP – get in control – Yoga puts you in a better frame of mind and helps you to manage your life better – you won’t know how you managed without it! Don’t rush, wake earlier to enjoy a slow cup of tea in your garden before work – it’s so worth it you’ll be more in control and in a better frame of mind – stop moaning – if you have to moan, you’re not getting it right! Get down to the beach, breathe and remind yourself to get into a North Coast State of Mind! Tel 072 885 6376

Hair Fashion Trends Brendan Broedelet -Innovations Hair Academy
O
f the following four social media hair fashion ideas, the first has to be the most intriguing, innovative and well frankly, quite unbelievable.
If you, like me, think that grandma's pantyhose made an amusing alternative to the car fan belt in a needy situation then think again as you ponder the following. Social media's Instagram was recently flooded by a bazaar craze where grandma's tapestry hoop is now being used to weave colour blocks into heads of long hair. By laying and clamping the hair into these hoops one is able to, with the help of a friend or even grandma, diagonally weave in all manner of thread and beads. This movement does make for some interesting colour blocking and was apparently sparked during music festival season almost a year ago by Bleach London (the trendy UK salon that was responsible for Georgia May Jagger's- My Little Pony's hue) (pale blue, pink, lavender and green) (nowadays fashion hair colours) who lately set up station at the FYF Festival in Los Angeles which in turn sent this craze viral on Instagram. Not to be outdone though is Kim Kardashian with her smoothing sprays. After a footloose and fancy free
summer turned her hair into somewhat of a dry ensemble, she has felt pressed to impart nourishment to her by way of high quality silicone and oil based spray. The sprays she and other celebs are vouching for are not that readily available to us in SA. However, we have some equally wonderful alternatives by beauty houses Redken, Pureology, Paul Mitchell, L'Oreal, Wella, Joico, Goldwell etc. The 'Hun' is also big at the moment on twitter and Instagram, although I am not totally convinced by its alluring ways (as I feel it looks a bit old fashioned) it promises an easy ride in that half of the hair is up on the top of your head (in a bun) while the back gives
you a sense of looseness by being worn down. As a parting shot, men have also been active on social media, sharing the latest 'Merman trend' which sees them bleaching (both hair, beard and eyebrows) and then toning with colours such as turquoise, teal, green, blue and sometimes even pink (not unlike the latest colours worn by the girls). This can look quite good if executed correctly however therein lies the secret. This form of colouring can be hard to achieve and that even by the deftest handed professional, so one is to be cautioned when following this type of trend.

Bono's
T
hough he's not the richest pop star in the world, U2's Bono just became millions of dollars richer, thanks to an early investment in Facebook. The rock frontman bought a 2.3 per cent share of the social media site for nearly $86million in 2009 through Elevation Partners, an investment group he co-founded. Because the investment has raked in about $1.4billion, he has made more money off of the Facebook share than the music he has created throughout his decades-long career. The $1.4billion, however, will be split between the six founding partners of Elevation Partners, which only gets 20 per cent of profits. Bono's takeaway is approximately $43million from the deal. Several news sources have reported that this investment puts Bono at the title of richest pop star in the world, but this has been proved false. Because Bono will only receive approximately $43million, he is still behind both Paul McCartney and Madonna on the richest pop stars list. Facebook, which went public in 2009, had its own 'billion' milestone this week, when a billion users visited the site in one day.

investment group rakes in $1.4billion from Facebook stock but he's not the world's richest pop star as five other investors will share fortune The rocker's accomplishment comes just days after he announced an upcoming campaign he will be involve in to empower women. He and the top African male musicians D'banj, Diamond and Banky W announced last week that they will be included in a remix of the song Strong Girl - a rallying cry for women's empowerment which features top African female talent. Bono, who's ONE advocacy group is the creative force behind the campaign for women empowerment, said music can create awareness and help shift policies to empower women because politicians are driven by popular things. Sipho Moyo, Africa executive director of ONE, said the campaign hopes to create structural and policy changes globally that will ensure women are empowered. The ultimate goal is to eradicate extreme poverty in 2030, Moyo says. GOOD INVESTMENT: U2'S BONO BOUGHT A 2.3 PER CENT SHARE OF THE SOCIAL MEDIA SITE FOR NEARLY $86MILLION IN 2009 THROUGH ELEVATION PARTNERS, AN INVESTMENT GROUP HE CO-FOUNDED.

New technology projects camera images onto rear-view mirror to get rid of blindspots
L
AND Rover is developing technology that effectively allows drivers to see through a caravan or trailer they are towing.
The system works by using a video feed from a vehicle’s existing camera system – which includes a reversing camera and a camera on each wing mirror – and combines it with a video from an additional wireless camera on the rear of the trailer or caravan. The two sets of images are then combined by the in-car computer to create a single video that appears in the car’s rear view mirror showing only the unobstructed view of the road behind. When reversing, the driver would
also be able to view the ‘seethrough’ camera feed from the back of the caravan or trailer on the dashboard ‘infotainment screen’ used also for sat-nav and radio and music controls. The image will include guidance lines calibrated to help reverse the car and trailer. Dr Wolfgang Epple, Jaguar Land Rover’s director of research and technology, said: ‘When you are overtaking, it is instinctive to check your mirrors. 'But if you are towing your vision is often restricted with large blind spots. Our Transparent Trailer project is researching how we could offer a view out of the vehicle unrestricted by your trailer, no matter its size or shape. 'Our prototype system offers a very high quality video image with no distortion of other cars or obstructions. 'This means the driver would have exactly the right information to make safe and effective decisions.’
