while back I
attended a presentation by the Sony Corporation featuring a glimpse of the future. I was particularly interested in their prediction that, at some time in the future, we would be wearing devices to help us live more productive and fulfilled lives. They predicted that we would soon be wearing watch-like devices that would measure our general activity patterns and make suggestions to modify our behaviour for healthier results. While it looked and sounded impressive, I couldn’t imagine anyone actually buying something so bizarre.
After all, you don’t need a talking watch to tell you that you need to get out more and resist the temptation to engage with those delicious treats that wink seductively at you on the way to the checkout points at Woolies. And if I have the occasional lapse of reason, I have a wonderful wife who is quick to point me back in the right direction. So, I have absolutely no need for a talking watch… which is why I bought one last week. It doesn’t actually talk. Instead it sends messages to my phone, LETTER FROM CLR COLLYN MARSH
ELECTION FEVER Election fever is rife and there is plenty going on. Local is lekker so let us try and understand what a Local Election is all about. On the 3rd August 2016 when you visit a polling station you will receive three (3) Ballot Papers. One for the Election of your Ward Councillor, one for your Party of choice to run your Municipality and one to select a Party to run your District Municipality. At the outset let me remind you that you can make as many choices as you wish. Your choice of Councillor for the Ward, is a Vote for the Person who you think is the best suited to represent you at Council and ALL other matters, the most experienced. Next is a Vote for the political Party you wish to govern the Municipality and third is a Vote for the Party you wish to govern the District Municipality (Ilembe). The Ilembe clusters are KwaDukuza, Mandini, Ndwedwe, and Mapumulu. KwaDukuza is the most viable (sells electricity and collects rates). Ndwedwe relies on Government Grants and so does Mapumulu. Ilembe supplies and charges for water to ALL the clusters except in the Sembcorp Concession Area (Old Dolphin Coast). Eskom supplies and receives payment for Electricity in Mandini, Ndwedwe and Mapumulu. Some of Ndwedwe covered by Ethekwini. Kwa Dukuza is overwhelming ANC – only 14 (Fourteen) opposition Councillors out of 53. Mandini and Mapumulu
congratulating me when I have done something physical that it approves of and gently chiding if I am missing the mark. It’s brilliant…and while it doesn’t have quite the same approach to the winking sweets and chocolates as my beloved Sue, it certainly bolsters my resistance to temptation. And having recently also been introduced to the freedom of Bluetooth earphones on Tech Talk on Radio Life & Style 88fm, I am now easily able to listen to the radio while I hit the pavement or the promenade for a couple of stress-free kilometres. These easy to operate earphones mean that you are free to move without a cable attaching you to anything and if your chosen device of audio entertainment is your phone, you can even make and receive calls on the go too – an added benefit if you need to stay in touch with the world. So, in the past week I have become quite technologically connected, but as Sue is quick to point out, that alone doesn’t get results – you still have to get moving. I recently watched a programme on one of those BBC channels that made a compelling case for the enormous health benefits of movement, the most effective of which was walking. And this is why I have decided to and Ndwedwe the same. It follows that Ilembe is also run by the ANC. Your Vote must count. So what to do? The easy one is Ward Councillor – most experienced. If you do not like the ANC run Council then Vote them out. This can only happen if another Party gets a majority or Coalitions are formed. The population in Ilembe is 90% African. This means only votes for a Party representing vast numbers of Voters will ever have a chance to overturn the Ruling Party. In this case the Dominant Party can only be overthrown by the I.F.P... Now let’s examine another scenario. What if the Voters in Ward 6 & 22 support the ANC.? Ward 21 is already ANC. The ANC would be over the moon and guess what? They would claim boasting rights and persuade Province and National Government to channel more money into our area thus creating lots of jobs and a better life for a lot of people. Possible Yes! Possibly No! But do not ever get the impression that the people on the other side of the N2 are going to stay at home and be quiet. Imagine the chaos if they decided to take over our streets. We need to get the R102 Corridor kick started and thousands of jobs to be created or face the inevitable which is trying to sustain an unequal Society of Rich vs Poor. Food for thought and plenty more scenarios to come.
rejoin the early morning walking group that meets on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays at the Sports Zone Running Co in the Ballito Junction Shopping Centre at 5 am. It’s the perfect way to get started on the road to improved fitness without killing yourself in the process – I hope. If you would like to join us, all you need is a comfortable pair of shoes and a bit of a sense of humour because getting up early enough to be there at 5am can be quite a challenge at first. If you want more information about the walking or running group, contact Candice or Dave Flood at the Sports Zone Running Co 032 586 0246 and they will be happy to fill you in. I’ve gotta go now…my watch is getting twitchy…catch you later!

THINGS TO CONSIDER BEFORE PLACING YOUR HOUSE ON THE MARKET IDA DU PLOOY HARCOURTS DOLPHIN COAST
W
HEN everyone is telling you that the economy is sliding downhill and you have to sell your property fast, take some time out to prepare your property before listing to sell. Once the house is on market and even if your property attracts a lot of interest, the jury is still out on whether the buyers will purchase. As the saying goes: A stich in time saves nine……….”
Seven things to consider before placing your house on the market:
1. ASK THE RIGHT PRICE. a. Asking too little will see you loosing financially. b. Asking too much and you will not receive offers and soon your property will become “old-news”. Always get a reputable agent to present you with a well-researched Comparative Market Analysis. At Harcourts Dolphin Coast and Umdloti we take pride in giving our sellers honest advice backed up with facts in recommending a price to you. Comparing your current competition with recent successful sales comparable to your property is standard procedure for every good real estate agent worth their salt. It will not hurt to get more than one agent to value your property. This is also a good opportunity for you to assess the different presentations from each agent and finding out which one will get you the willing and able buyer the soonest.
2. FIRST IMPRESSIONS LAST.
A potential buyer must be able to see himself in the property. The small cost of cleaning up house, pool and garden can never be under estimated. Something else never to ignore is smell. The overpowering smell of pets and other odours may just loose you the buyer you are looking for? Few people will purchase a property that they found to be un-liveable.
3. MAINTENANCE
You do not have to re-do the whole house when you want to sell, only focus on maintenance that will make the BIG difference. Work such as that leaking tap, lights that are not working, doors and gates that don’t completely close, kitchen countertops with burn marks and dirty unattractive bathrooms. We are so used to the small things that need to be repaired and replaced, that we don’t actually see them. It is better to spend some money on urgent maintenance problems to get you the price you want, than presenting your house where you could have done these things in advance for nominal costs. When buyers see anything that needs to be repaired, they tend to multiply the actual maintenance and repair costs tenfold, leaving you with a lower offer.
4. GET ALL YOUR DOCUMENTATION AND PLANS READY
Municipalities have different requirements regarding occupation certificates, etc. confirming that your property plans and buildings conform to their required standard. You will be well advised to make sure that all of your
plans and certificates are in order before putting your property on the market. Many transactions have fallen away due to delays caused by non-compliance. A good idea is to have your plans ready for inspection with all servitudes and boundary pegs clearly indicated for buyers to view.
5. GUARANTEES

DUAL MANDATE
Chaka’s Rock
Those items that you attach so much sentimental value to, may not be to the taste of your buyers. Create a clean slate where potential buyers can see what the property would look like without all your nick-knack’s cluttering every shelve and counter top. It is amazing how much stuff one accumulates through the years that you become completely oblivious to it. Before placing your house on the market, walk through the property and visualize how your property should look to buyers, and start packing away.
7. INVEST IN GOOD PHOTOS
Gone are the days where an agent can just run through your property capturing your investment with a cellphone camera. After you have decluttered, done your repairs and “staged” the property to put its best foot forward, invest in a professional photographer or make sure that your agents take time to photograph your house to attract good buyers. You have the right to the best presentation of your property. HARCOURTS Dolphin Coast and Umdloti professionals are here to help. As estate agent’s daily bread is earned by dealing in every aspect of the property market from marketing, to legal presentation and negotiating we offer comprehensive professional assistance to all our clients. Most home owners buy or sell only a few times in their lives. The hear-say from friends and neighbours may be dangerous as their advice could loose you not only valuable time, but financial damage. When thinking of selling, call on our agents at HARCOURTS DOLPHIN COAST and UMDLOTI. We are all well trained , qualified and professional to assist you in getting the maximum market related price in the shortest time possible. Remember what you need to sell for to move on, is not what the buyer is going to offer. As always the price of every property is determined by what you as a willing seller will accept from an able and willing buyer.

VISIT BALLITO’S FIRST WEBCAM ON THE BEACH
C
YBERVIEW LETTING has been successfully letting holiday accommodation in Ballito for the past sixteen years during which the business has grown considerably. But they have identified a need for a more proactive approach to marketing Ballito as a preferred holiday destination as there is no significant tourism body doing this.
In a bid to improve the situation and to attract those looking to escape the drudgery of the concrete and steel hinterland of the interior, Cyberview Letting has navigated masses of red tape and bureaucracy in a bid to put Ballito on the map. The first of four live webcams is now up and running with a sweeping view of the beach and breakers at Salmon Bay. The other three will follow soon but already the traffic to the first webcam is impressive.
For a first-hand view We now have an office in Umdloti and are looking for of what’s happening at qualified agents to join our dynamic team. VALUE INVESTING UNPACKED
Shaun Latter
B
ENJAMIN GRAHAM was dubbed as the “Father of Value investing”. At the risk of boring you with the technicalities and nuances – let’s just say that value investing is an investment style that has gained popularity due to it being the favoured approach of Warren Buffett.
Warren Buffett is widely recognised as the greatest investor of our times and was a direct student of Benjamin Graham. Besides being an astute investor, Mr. Buffett has also become known for his pearls of wisdom that he dispenses in a succinct quote like
fashion. With Father’s Day around the corner, perhaps we can take to heart some of his sage advice. Here are some of his top quotes and what we may be able to learn from them: "To invest successfully over a lifetime does not require a stratospheric IQ, unusual business insights, or inside information. What's needed is a sound intellectual framework for making decisions and the ability to keep emotions from corroding that framework." This is a quote I often use with clients in that most people don’t have any sort of plan or strategy to provide

a much needed framework upon which to guide your decision making. It highlights the essence and importance of proper Financial Planning. Too many investors are swayed by “noise” by short-term economic uncertainties, political instability and the allure of “safer” options. It also reminds me of one of my favourites which reads: “We simply attempt to be fearful when others are greedy and to be greedy only when others are fearful” This quote really cuts to the heart of what it means to be a value investor and is a reminder of the fact that we are emotional beings swayed by sensationalized media and group hype. We believe that according the name 'investors' to institutions that trade actively is like calling someone who repeatedly engages in one-night stands a 'romantic.' Investing is a long term strategy and there are no get rich quick schemes and the best time to invest is now. There are dozens more like it but in short, the messages are clear: 1) Have a plan/strategy 2) Stick to the plan (unless material changes 3) Let time do the rest… Happy Father’s Day to all the Dad’s out there!
www.privatewealth.co.za
With Father’s Day around the corner, I thought it appropriate to reflect on an icon in the investment world who is also a Father. You will be rewarded Don’t get me wrong; we all work very hard accumulating investment assets and seeing the value of your investment drop can be a gut wrenching experience. But if you have the stomach (and time) to weather it your efforts will be well rewarded. Over the long term equities should provide returns of around eight percent above inflation, but expect a bumpy ride along the way. Rather than fear this growth asset, rather try and spend some time trying to understanding it and you may even learn to respect it.

HE one great advantage about being seated in a suite at Kings Park Stadium, is that you are surrounded by people who you know or are familiar with. As part of the Sharks Brand initiative, Ashton together with Thomas More were afforded the opportunity of our First Teams to play the curtain raiser to the Sharks vs Kings Super Rugby game.
I tried to visualise being one of those players running onto an immaculate turf, bending down feeling the grass and looking up into the stands. What a feeling and just such a privilege for all players and coaches as well as spectators to be involved. Congratulations to Eddie Coetzee and the Sharks for promoting the smaller schools to be given time on the hallowed ground.
Just recently, we were sent on a theatrical ‘Yellow Brick Road’ journey into a kaleidoscope of magnificent backdrops and scenes from the Wizard of Oz. The acting, singing and choreography was exceptional and all our students, whether they were a munchkin or a Dorothy, they need to be congratulated. The dance/ ballet sequences were brilliant, the individual characters performing at the highest level, maintaining their Kansas accents throughout the production, was testimony to hours and hours of hard work. The attention to detail of each scene was purely spectacular, as were the back stage crew, the sound and lighting technicians worked tirelessly to ensure quality prevailed.
The First rugby team taking last year and this year’s league season and Easter Tournaments into consideration, have won 22 out of 23 games. Both these teams have come a long way and one just has to go back three years when the same teams were taking big scores against them. 2016 Highlights – Our girls winning the Regional Spar Tournament Winning six of 6 games at the St Dunstan’s Easter Festival The boys won 3 out of the St Dunstan’s games Playing at Kings Park as the main curtain raiser and being victorious
Some interesting statistics on our First Team Hockey and Rugby Teams – The first Girls Hockey team have played 36 Indoor/Outdoor games losing one game during the Spar Tournament, but still being victorious These events will go down as as Tournament winners and booked highlights of 2016 and certainly indicates their place in the final of the KZN Spar Competition. O the 35 wins, they have what we as a College stand for. managed to score 138 goals with only With mid-year exams almost at an 8 against them. end, we wish the students best of luck for
their results and I believe the academic results will be very rewarding. We wish all the neighbouring schools a pleasant mid-year holiday. Excellence does belong to the Zealous

NATURAL ANTIBIOTICS 101 STEPHANIE WILLS - LIFESTYLE HEALTH
L
ET me start by saying, antibiotics are a true medical miracle! Antibiotics save lives and are absolutely necessary in many different circumstances.
Unfortunately, because they are so effective, antibiotics are now handed out like candy. As a result, our gut health is suffering, our overall immunity is compromised and antibiotic resistance is now rampant. We have lost faith in the body's own innate healing capabilities as well as the power of natural herbs, nutrients and a healthy diet to overcome minor illnesses. Again, I'd like to emphasise that in acute serious infections, antibiotics are the right choice! However, in everyday, minor situations, natural alternatives are just as effective, have a safer, long term track record and are gentle on the gut with far less side effects (if any!) Let's unpack what some of these alternative natural solutions are: Olive Leaf Extract Olive leaf extract is a powerful immune-booster, anti-bacterial agent as well as a potent antioxidant. All these factors work synergistically to combat infection and other illnesses. Oleuropein, the key nutrient, exerts phagocytic activity by triggering the immune cells to engulf harmful foreign particles and germs. Olive leaves have a unique combination of antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal properties – which makes it a highly effective natural antibiotic. It is also both safe and effective for long term use. Echinacea Echinacea stimulates the immune system to resist bacterial and viral invaders. One of the mechanisms is by increasing the levels of the chemical properdin that increases cellular resistance to infection. This unique herb also activates T cells and stimulates macrophages that engulf and destroy problematic invaders. Echinacea also inhibits the enzyme hyluronidase – thus blocking the ability of pathogens to enter into the cells and tissues of our body and cause damage. This amazing plant has three unique nutrients that synergize to enhance immune activity. These nutrients include polysaccharides, alkylamides and cichoric acid which together provide a strong activating force on white blood cells that destroy pathogenic organisms and tumor growth. Vitamin C Vitamin C provides multilayered immune system support. It optimises the function of natural killer (NK) cells, which are basically the “hit men” of the immune system, that track and destroy tumour cells and other invaders. Vitamin C also enhances the functioning of neutrophils, lymphocytes and antibodies. Neutrophils fight bacterial infection by locating, engulfing and destroying the pathogen as well as cleaning up their oxidizing molecules. Lymphocytes produce antibodies in the immune system and assist in guiding other immune cells toward threats. Antibodies in the immune system assist in identifying and destroying invaders such as cancerous cells. The
presence of vitamin C helps to raise antibody immunoglobulin levels to protect against infections. Our body cannot manufacture vitamin C on its own; so it must be obtained externally. That is why proper nutrition and supplementation is so important to ensuring optimal amounts. Probiotics Did you know that as much as 70% of your immune system’s effectiveness can be traced back to activities of gut flora!? This is why optimising beneficial intestinal bacteria populations can give a major boost to your immunity and well-being. In fact, the intestinal immune system includes more antibody cells than the rest of the body put together. This means that when it comes to fighting disease, probiotics are our first line of defence! Unfortunately, the use of antibiotics, excessive use of antibacterial products, a diet rich in processed foods, obesity and certain modern medical treatments – even the aging process – are all factors that can lead to an imbalance in gut flora. Therefore, make sure you eat a healthy whole food diet rich in fermented foods and supplement with a high quality, high strength, multistrain probiotic. Wild Oregano Oil Wild Oregano oil is a potent natural antibiotic without harmful side effects. It contains two powerful compounds, carvacrol and thymol, that have powerful anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties. It is also considered to be antiparasitic, antiseptic, antiviral and immune stimulating. Colloidal Silver Colloidal silver is basically a small amount of silver molecules suspended in pure de-ionised water. However, in spite of its simplicity, it is one of nature's most powerful antibiotics that exerts a positive effect on the immune system when taken internally. Colloidal silver is anti-bacterial, anti-viral and anti-fungal, enhances the healing process, can restore diseased cells back to normality and is able to combat a variety of serious life threatening illnesses. Note: Silver has been used for thousands of years. It is absolutely safe, non toxic and has no side effects. It also has no reaction or interaction with any other alternative remedy or medication. Garlic Garlic has incredible healing properties. It is rich in a compound called diallyl sulphide which has the ability to effectively penetrate the protective bio-layer formed by colonies of harmful bacteria. Diallyl Sulphide dissolves this layer and eventually destroys the pathogen. Garlic also contains a wide range of thiosulphinates such as allicin that are responsible for its antibacterial activity. Garlic is truly a remarkable natural remedy. While synthetic antibiotics are losing their effect against ‘superbugs’ – garlic is certainly a safe and an effective alternative to fight off infection without damaging the digestive tract. Note: If you take blood-thinning drugs like warfarin or aspirin – be sure
to talk to your doctor before consuming garlic supplements. Conclusion The protocol for conventional antibiotics is normally about 10–14 days however, there are always side effects and gut health will suffer. Alternatively, when it comes to a natural antimicrobial program, the protocol can be about 60–90 days BUT your immune system is strengthened, overall health improves, there are no deleterious side effects and natural healing has taken place! So please be patient – the health benefits are always worth the wait. Always use natural solutions first and foremost when it comes to everyday minor infections. Note: If you have a gut infection, tough-to-remove parasite, H.pylori infection, or viral infection, these are common blocks that keep you from healing and can cause a leaky gut. We would strongly advise you to seek professional help from your trusted health care practitioner.

NO MORE WINTER HAIR BRENDAN BROEDELET - INNOVATIONS HAIR ACADEMY

For those willing to wander a little way down the wild side there is British TiGi range’s ‘Motor Mouth’. With its bright yellow baseball-shaped container and violet nozzle, this product promises to puts the ‘fun’ back in funky. While ‘Shimmer Shine’ is applied to dry hair, ‘Motor Mouth’ is meant for damp hair and it only takes two or three pumps to add volume and shine to limp, lackluster hair… but instead of flecks of sunshine, think purple rain. The wild child in you will love the violet glow– just remember to wash your hands after applying it!
OUR hair has hardly begun to recover from summer’s humid heat and the resulting frizzfactor when winter arrives with cold, dark mornings and hair that is suddenly as dry and lusterless as the parched yellow grass alongside the road. The good news is that you don’t have to wait until September to put the spring back into your hair; there are a number of easy-to-use, leave-in products that are expressly formulated to combat the harsh effects of winter and restore that glossy gleam to your hair.
‘Shimmer Shine’ by Kevin Murphy comes in an environmentally-friendly non-aerosol spray bottle and has been described by one devoted fan as the equivalent of investing in the little black dress that no woman should ever be without. This product is a quality conditioner and sun protector, boasting vitamins A, C, and E as well as Baobab, Immortelle and Bamboo extracts, but what makes it an absolute winner for beating the winter woes is that every squirt contains a dusting of fine gold particles. Just one twirl of the handy handbag-sized bottle sets the gold dust swirling, ready to impart a shimmering sheen to your hair that is bound to evoke magical memories of summer sunsets.
Another great winter pick-me-up is TiGi’s leavein conditioner, ‘Ego Boost’, packaged in a perky pink bottle with a cheeky green cap. Ideal for those on-thego days when an ego boost is exactly what you need, this product will soothe your split ends and protect your hair from the damaging effects of dry winter weather and heated styling tools.
the shake of a can. Just as the first frosty mornings encouraged you to break out your winter wardrobe and even adjust your skincare routine to protect you from the colder weather, make sure that your hair gets the best care this winter!
Last but not least, there is Joico’s ‘Hair Shake’, a liquid-to-powder finishing spray that will add longlasting volume and texture to fine, flyaway hair with

E do body transformation treatments by means of natural plant derived injectable treatments and lymphatic drainage wraps.
Our target market is people who struggle with stubborn fatty deposits. Stubborn fatty deposits are usually caused by imbalances in the body, like hormone imbalances, disease like diabetes, or medication. Normal diets and exercise is not enough to treat these causes. Our Cellé Lipo Treatments breaks through these barriers by not only emptying out the fat cells, but by completely eliminating them from the body. Because this is a very sensitive and personal issue, we opened the Cellé Wellness Centre in a very private office park. Our address is: Unit 17, Second Floor, Silverstone Office Park, Douglas Crowe Drive, Ballito. We can also be contacted on 0625019716.

e l y t S n i Married Michelle Botha and Kyle Green are originally from Johannesburg but moved to Ballito for a better life . Part of the plan was to start a business and to get married . The business is now a going concern and the final part of the plan came together at the Salt Rock Hotel in May when Michelle and Kyle were married . It was a gorgeous wedding – a real fairy-tale come true and lens man , Barry Bowditch , captured it all in beautiful images that the couple and their friends will treasure for a lifetime . We wish them much happiness and love , always.

Y
oga is a way of living and being that makes true happiness possible. I love my house. I lie on my back on my little green lawn and look up at it – it’s the colour of a farm fresh egg.
I like the fragile peely bits more to the bottom – it’s not a great paint job but it feels like age and comfort. Drifting clouds seem to sneak out behind the roof “what’s the rush?” They say “we’re in no hurry – why are you?” The inside of the house is cool, the walls pale. Lots of wood makes it feel natural. Gekos love it – there’s a constant hunt going on on big windows where hapless insects are trapped. I watch with fascination and try not to take sides. A patient geko finally and unbelievably devours a large moth that tired of protecting itself. Maybe that’s how death is – a quiet relinquishing of the desire to protect oneself. I fill my space with the soft smells of chicken stew and steamed rice. Steamed vegetables have a specific aroma – is it warmed vitamins? Pets snore and sigh and remind me of their companionship and love of human company. Tiny Manikin birds have built nests in my patio light fittings. I spend hours watching their activities. I want to go closer and peer deeper but don’t want to intrude. A liberal sprinkling of seed attracts a multitude of birds to this sacred little space. They jostle politely and everyone seems to get their share. Architectural masterpieces of spider’s webs shine in the early morning sun. Is it the same ones I see each day or are they newly made each evening?
You can’t believe how rapidly a day goes by when you are watching the suns movement across the heavens. Oh, the freedom to decide when to brew the next cup of tea, what special treats to prepare. Small chunks of paw paw sprinkled with black pepper, sliced pears with lime juice and cinnamon, steel cut oats porridge honey and clotted cream, bananas with nutmeg, coconut oil and sour cream. Buttered toast – simple bliss! An emerald green bed of rocket with firm ripe tomatoes, white mozzarella, salt, olive oil and big black olives. The taste bud shock of a dill cucumber or a peppadew! Oh and eggs – imagine the amazement of whoever was first to discover what is possible to do with eggs! Yellow globe surrounded by plasma like albumin – colourless till cooked – then cleanly white. Mixed with the yolk it becomes a soft floaty light mass of scramble, add sugar and it’s a creamy airy mass for baking – begging you to delve in with your fingers! What’s this all got to do with yoga? Oh everything, everything! Living, noticing, calming, appreciating, seeing, thinking, tasting, floating, wondering. Walk quietly around your own beautiful space as though for the first time and marvel, smile, dream, see. Once discovered that all you seek is deep within, the world is then a joyful place to step into with confidence, knowing all you seek is already found. May you be deeply at peace with your own self – only then joyfully connected to your choice of humans. Namaste. 072 885 6376

SEMBCORP SIZA WATER STREAM CLEAN-UP IN CELEBRATING WORLD ENVIRONMENTAL DAY KHOSI MTHENJWA

embcorp Siza Water celebrated World Environmental Day by embarking on an exercise to clean up the stream in Shakaskraal. The clean-up on 8th June 2016 was a joint effort between the Sembcorp staff, in partnership with the Dolphin Coast Conservancy’s “Green Team”. The project was in keeping with their 2016 Environmental Protection theme “CONSERVING RESOURCES FOR A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE”.
The stream runs alongside Sembcorp’s Shakaskraal Waste Water Treatment Works and as Sembcorp Siza Water’s Managing Director, Shyam Misra said: “Sembcorp is committed to ensuring that we work to promote harmony with the environment and to render our services with minimal impact. We noticed that the stream had become littered with plastic, alien plants and rubbish. It had also become silted which lead to the stream being extremely polluted, blocked and foul smelling. Hence, our drive to clean this stream and we are extremely proud to report that once we had finished a hard day’s work, the stream was

flowing again. The greatest threat to our planet is the belief that it is not our responsibility to protect and save it;” Approximately 50 bags of waste was collected during the clean-up. Sembcorp Siza Water urges the community to use waste bins in the area to prevent the stream from becoming polluted again. Mrs Di Jones, Chairman of Dolphin Coast Conservancy said; “the Dolphin Coast Conservancy’s Green Team was delighted to assist with the clearing of the stream in Shakaskraal. The stream in question was very overgrown and silt had backed up to such an extent that regular flooding of adjoining properties was occuring. It was extremely rewarding to see the flow of water recommencing once the work had been completed and, when the rains start again, the project will really show its value. The team of about 10 workers worked so well together that more was achieved than had originally been envisaged.” Sembcorp urges other corporates to embark on similar projects to protect and save our environment.

ALL WE’LL DRIVE IN OUR FAMIY BRENDAN SEERY – TRAVEL EDITOR SATURDAY STAR
B
UYING a car – the second biggest investment of your life, after your house – is not something to be taken lightly. And for someone like me, who has effectively test-driven most of the cars on the market, it should have been easy. That it ended up being one of the most complicated purchasing decisions I have yet made surprised me. But, even more so, what clinched the deal was the colour…
Those of you who are familiar with what I write know I love Subarus – I am what my colleague on Star Motoring, Jesse Adams, disparagingly calls a “fan boy”. So it should surprise no one that I decided to buy another Subaru. The brand has the highest return purchase percentage of any in South Africa and many owners are Subaru evangelists – so I am in good company. However, we still did a needs analysis and looked at what we wanted from a car. It is something I would advise everybody to do. It will ensure you don’t get carried away with a cute design or colour and then find the boot is not big enough or, even worse, you get stuck because you believed the advert claims that it is an adventure vehicle, We already have a Subaru Forester but it’s 11 years old and has done 176 000km.Itis not a lot for a Subaru, but the brand has moved its technology on by leaps and bounds since we bought the vehicle in mid2004… and, in any case, who doesn’t like an upgrade? We decided we still wanted a vehicle which could cover long distances in comfort, which was tough, safe and reliable and, importantly, would allow us to venture off the beaten track without fear of getting stuck due to lost traction. Over the years, in our own and test Subarus, we have had a lot of fun on gravel roads and tracks and the Forester has taken us to places normally the preserve of hard-core 4x4s.It’s done 4x4 trails in some national parks and some getaway places we love. The 2004 Forester was a supreme dirt-road handler… you can’t hide the rally-bred heritage that comes from the symmetrical AWD and the boxer engine, which gives the car a low centre of gravity. On one trip to Namibia, we were travelling, four up, towing a trailer, along a gravel road at 120km/h and it felt solid as a rock. You can’t do that in any other vehicle in its category
with the same degree of confidence. The new Forester, with permanent, symmetrical All Wheel Drive, is all that and more. Itis highly capable in low traction situations.. However, the new Forester was not the clear winner for us, especially not when we looked at its smaller sibling, the XV. This is a funky Impreza hatchback-based vehicle which has a 2.0-litre 110kW engine and is very good off-road – Subaru dealers tell of XV customers returning from the sand roads of Mozambique sporting large grins and telling stories of passing bogged-down 4x4s. In the end, after much looking and chin scratching, the XV didn’t quite have the space we wanted, but it was a close run thing because itis an excellent car to drive on dirt and looks young and funky. The Forester decision, then, should have been easy. But it wasn’t. I had imagined that I would opt for the 2.0-litre manual transmission version, which has the same engine and gearbox (bar some different ratios) as the XV. I am also a manual person and the 2.0X Forester is closest to what my old Forester is. The 2.0-litre (with six speed manual box, as opposed to my five speed) is also amazingly economical for a permanent AWD car: I achieved 6.5 litres per 100km on my highway test route, at an average speed of 114km/h. That’s better than my daughter’s 1.6 Ford Fiesta. True story. I also did not see myself as a person who drives an automatic, especially a CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission), which is the only option in the bigger engined, 2.5 litre Foresters. CVTs are normally horrible and I found those in the Mitsubishi Outlander, Nissan X Trail, and some others to be dreadful. The engine in a CVT-equipped vehicle often screams in agony, like a slipping clutch, until the road speed catches up. Subaru, however, does make the best CVT around and its behaviour is pretty close to that of a normal automatic. A revised 2.5-litre “boxer” (flat-four) engine now puts out 126kW, in comparison to the 112kW of the 2004 model. The internal changes include a cam chain (which makes maintenance far less expensive than for the motors with a cam belt) and reduced friction components which all help to make the car more economical. In the past, people looking for a reason not to buy a Subaru would complain about the fuel consumption. I found my Forester better than any
similar AWD vehicle, although the nature of permanent AWD means it will use more fuel than an ordinary sedan. The new ones, though, are now often as good as, or better in some cases, than their 2-wheel-drive competitors. That’s something which appears to have escaped many of my motoring journo colleagues… along with the fact that, comparing like with like, Subarus are cheaper than their competition, even some competitors’ FWD vehicles. In the end, after a few weeks of thought, debate, number-crunching and gazing into the distance it boiled down to two Foresters: the entry-level 2.5X or the next trim level up, the 2.5 XS. Mention must be made of Beverleigh Cooper, the endlessly patient saleswoman at Subaru Joburg, who listened as my arguments went back and forth over the weeks. Last year, she put a friend of mine – a professional woman – into a Forester XS. That woman said that dealing with Bev was the first time that she had not been talked down to by people in the motor trade – the “what does your husband think, lovey?” syndrome. Of the options Bev arrayed for us, the cheaper car was blue, but did not have alloy wheels or toys like keyless entry. The more expensive one had the fancy wheels, the toys and, so I thought, Subaru’s amazing X-Mode system. X-Mode is basically an electronic conductor of the AWD orchestra, co-ordinating engine output, traction control and brake functions to maximise traction in tricky situations. It is aimed at giving even inexperienced drivers confidence in tricky situations.
It makes a great AWD system even better. A year ago, my colleague Willem van de Putte got a test Forester stuck in mud up to its floor pan. And he got out, because of X-Mode. He was impressed – and it takes a lot to impress him as a hard-core 4x4 man. In the end, we opted for the blue car, which was cheaper and the colour was the kicker, to be honest. Enough silver cars already! I was prepared to live without the X-Mode, because I know that, even without it, Subarus are still formidable in difficult conditions. So, you could have literally knocked me down with a feather when I collected our new car – and saw the X-Mode button just ahead of the gear lever. I now know that all Subarus with the Lineartronic CVT system come equipped with X-mode. But it’s been like an extra Christmas present for me because it gives me, as the Subaru marketing slogan says, “Confidence in Motion”. And Subaru is currently offering a sector-leading 5-year/120 000km plan on XVs and Foresters. Do I care that Jesse thinks I am a fan boy? No. Because this car works for me on the levels of head and heart: its engineering solutions are innovative and it drives like nothing else on the road. Also, I love the Blue Quartz Pearl paintjob. Long and tortuous though this experience was – and surprising because of that – it has confirmed to me that there are two types of drivers: Those who drive a Subaru and those, disadvantaged individuals who don’t.
PEUGEOT 208 – VALUE AND STYLE
P
EUGEOT SOUTH AFRICA recently launched a thoroughly updated version of its popular 208 subcompact hatchback.
The new line-up consists of three derivatives, three engine choices, two transmissions and two trim levels.
MORE THAN JUST A FACELIFT Peugeot Citroen South Africa managing director Francis Harnie said: “The 208 has been a stalwart performer in the Peugeot stable, both here and abroad. However, with demand for more compact, but also more sophisticated cars continuing to grow, it was time to update the current model. "All 208 models are now powered by Euro6compliant engines featuring our award-winning PureTech technology, which deliver ample zip and impressive economy. "The advanced auto gearbox offered in the new GT Line model sets new benchmarks for efficiency and shift speed. The exterior and interior updates add lustre to an already popular package.”
STANDARD KIT While the GT Line is the flagship of the new 208 range, all four variants benefit from a comprehensive standard execution.
ENTRY-LEVEL MODEL: halogen headlights with daytime running lights and a follow-me-home function, LED three-claw tail lights, and 15" wheels with full wheel covers. Inside, the i-Cockpit is equipped with an MP3compatible CD receiver with multiple speakers, trip computer, electric power steering, aircon, electric front windows, a height-adjustable driver’s seat, height and reach-adjustable steering wheel, and a refrigerated glove compartment. 208 ACTIVE: Alloy wheels, colourcoded door handles and mirrors. Halogen headlights are exchanged for two-tone halogen headlights with an elliptic mode and LED daytime running lights, while front fog lights are included. The GT LINE has the full house of trim with added cornering function for the fog lights. The interior gets half-leather upholstery and a leather-trimmed steering wheel. Also standard on the GT Line are an electrochromatic rear-view mirror, auto-activating headlights
and rain-sensing windscreen wipers. Manual aircon makes way for an automatic bi-zone climate control system. Vehicles come standard with a three-year or 100 000km warranty. Active and GT Line models also benefit from a five-year or 60 000km Premium Plan (Full Maintenance Plan).
