KZN’S FAVOURITE READ

from the editor

S

o, we dodged the bullet – just! Last week the international press was predicting that South Africa would be back in recession but we squeaked by on a meagre 0.6% growth. It’s no reason to celebrate – we are still circling the toilet bowl economically while our political leadership continues to reel from crisis to scandal. But I love this country and criticising what’s wrong here doesn’t make one unpatriotic – on the contrary – all that is needed for bad guys to thrive is for good guys to do nothing.

The most exciting television entertainment coming from South Africa at the moment is the live coverage of what’s happening in parliament. Compared to the rubbish that the SABC is producing, this is entertainment at its best. SAFTA Nominees for Best Actor in a Comedy Series this year must surely include Julius Malema, with Jacob Zuma in the best supporting actor category for their stellar performances in “When Are You Going to Pay Back the Money…” Actually, they are doing their bit for the economy when you think about it. They have personally injected a huge amount into it for starters…okay, quite a bit of that has been on legal matters but still, they are spreading it around, unlike most of us who seem to have less to spread around each month as the cost of living continues to rise here. Not everyone, it would seem, is feeling the pinch. Statistics SA figures showed on Tuesday that economic growth in the second quarter (such as it was) was supported by general government services, the transport and communication industry, and financial services. Isn’t it nice to know that our bankers and politicians and their friends are doing so well. But maybe the fact that you and I are actually paying for their happy

circumstances might be reason enough to curtail the celebrations. And to illustrate the point, on the Dolphin Coast as this region is sometimes called, we will now be paying even more for the privilege of living here. The cost of water has just gone up by a massive 27%...Oh yes, it just kinda slipped in there while you weren’t looking. And to add insult to injury, Sembcorp Siza Water – selling South African water in South Africa to South Africans - is not even a South African owned company. It’s a foreign owned concern and the profits from this venture, which are by all accounts very healthy, largely go offshore. The Siza tariff increase became effective on the 1st July, 2014. My source, an estate manager of repute, made enquiries directly with Sembcorp SIZA on a number of occasions until early August, 2014, in an attempt to get the new tariff for budget purposes, but he was continually told it had not yet been approved. On the August 14th he received an email from a colleague with the new tariffs - tariffs that, as far as we can determine, have to date not been officially published in the press – little wonder when you do the sums. Basic charges increase by 10% and everything else by a whacking 27% - no public participation, no consultation, no warning… just a mega inflationary increase (as far as I can determine). We are already paying some of the highest rates in the country for water and now they have been increased by 27%. This only adds pressure to an already overstrained local economy. The original idea of the public private partnership between the Ilembe District Municipality and Sembcorp (Siza water) was apparently to increase efficiency and reduce costs, but we were royally

duped if my source has his facts straight. He says that when Siza came into the equation, the increased sewerage consumption rate charge based on water usage was ostensibly for the replacement of machinery at the sewer works – it was, he says, a short term increase to pay for the new equipment - but we have been paying that inflated rate for about 16 years now. Add an extra 27% and water suddenly becomes a luxury… You can find a copy of the new Siza Water Tariff chart on our Facebook page. Read it and weep. I have tried to engage Siza to determine the facts and PRO Khosi Mathenjwa says that this increase was a decree from the Ilembe District Municipality and that it took so long to finalise that they had no time to publish the details before implementation. So, why not delay implementation until after public consultation has taken place? As Ilembe is a minority 26.5% shareholder in this partnership, I find it hard to believe that the tail is wagging the dog here. This saga smells like sewerage and maybe our local ward councillors need a bit of encouragement from you to actually do something concrete towards

Christmas Fair Fund Spring Fashion Show

The Christmas Fair Fund pulled out all the stops to keep local fashionistas up to date with this year’s latest Spring/Summer fashion trends. The stylish Spring fashion show took place on Thursday morning, 28th August at The Simbithi Country Club, Ballito. The event aimed to celebrate local talent while raising funds for a number of projects supported by the Christmas Fair Fund. The line-up of designers included exciting new names like Sibu Msimang, Carol Clark and Larisa Terblanche, as well as Karen Monk Klijnstra and Kathrin Kidger. A funky children’s range from One of a Kind at Burndale, Umhlali, added a fun element to the morning. After the show, guests were able to meet the designers and buy their creations from the pop up shop. The event was a great success thanks to all who participated and came to enjoy it

Things You Should Give Up To

Here is a list of 10 things which, if you give up on them, will make your life a lot easier and much, much happier. We hold on to so many things that cause us a great deal of pain, stress and suffering – and instead of letting them all go, instead of allowing ourselves to be stress free and happy – we cling on to them. Not anymore. Starting today we will give up on all those things that no longer serve us, and we will embrace change. Ready? Here we go:

1. Give up your need to always be right. There are so many of us who can’t stand the idea of being wrong – wanting to always be right – even at the risk of ending great relationships or causing a great deal of stress and pain, for us and for others. It’s just not worth it. Whenever you feel the ‘urgent’ need to jump into a fight over who is right and who is wrong, ask yourself this question:

“Would I rather be right, or would I rather be kind?” ?” Wayne Dyer.

What difference will that make? Is your ego really that big? 2. Give up your need for control. Be willing to give up your need to always control everything that happens to you and around you – situations, events, people, etc. Allow everything and everyone to be just as they are and you will see how much better will that make you feel.

“By letting it go it all gets done. The world is won by those who let it go. But when you try and try, the world is beyond winning.” -Lao Tzu

3. Give up on blame. Give up on your need to blame others for what you have or don’t have, for what you feel or don’t feel. Stop giving your powers away and start taking responsibility for your life. 4. Give up your self-defeating self-talk. Oh my. How many people are hurting themselves because of their negative, polluted and repetitive self-defeating mind-set? Don’t believe everything that your mind is telling you – especially if it’s negative and self-defeating. You are better than that.

“The mind is a superb instrument if used rightly. Used wrongly, however, it becomes very destructive.” -Eckhart Tolle

5. Give up your limiting beliefs about what you can or cannot do, about what is possible or impossible. From now on, you are no longer going to allow your limiting beliefs to keep you stuck in the wrong place. Spread your wings and fly!

“A belief is not an idea held by

the mind, it is an idea that holds the mind.” -Elly

Roselle

6. Give up complaining. Give up your constant need to complain about those many, many, maaany things – people, situations, events that make you unhappy, sad and depressed. Nobody can make you unhappy; no situation can make you sad or miserable unless you allow it to. It’s not the situation that triggers those feelings in you, but how you choose to look at it. Never underestimate the power of positive thinking. 7. Give up the luxury of criticism. Give up your need to criticize things, events or people that are different than you. We are all different, yet we are all the same. We all want to be happy, we all want to love and be loved and we all want to be understood. We all want something, and something is wished by us all. 8. Give up your need to impress others. Stop trying so hard to be something that you’re not just to make others like you. It doesn’t work this way. The moment you stop trying so hard to be something that you’re not, the moment you take of all your masks, the moment you accept and embrace the real you, you will find people will be drawn to you, effortlessly. 9. Give up your resistance to change. Change is good. Change will help you move from A to B. Change will help you make improvements in your life and also the lives of those around you. Follow your bliss, embrace change – don’t resist it.

“Follow your bliss and the universe will open doors for you where there were only walls.” -Joseph Campbell

10. Give up labels. Stop labelling those things, people or events that you don’t understand as being weird or different and try opening your mind, little by little. Minds only work when open.

“The highest form of ignorance is when you reject something you don’t know anything about.” -Wayne Dyer

Roland Reichelt became a legend in the Natal Midlands producing sought after deli products with no preservatives except salt and curing salt for colour, and selling them at local markets and through the numerous delis scattered across the region. Delicious Energy Bars Kerry Hedges

S

o these are what WE call “healthy”. I always make these when we go hiking or for anything that needs something delicious and packed full of goodness. Again the use of dark chocolate - make sure it is a good quality chocolate otherwise the bars will be too sweet. Instead of peanut butter you could use any other nut butter that is now available (Home Grown at the Litchi orchard stocks some awesome ones). I think almond butter would be an amazing substitute. These can be cut into little squares or rectangles and wrapped in wax paper to keep. They also make an amazing gift for a trail running friend, stack them into a pretty box and tie up with ribbon! Remember quality ingredients are always keyso try and find local honey and organic bananas and oats.

Ingredients: 1 large ripe banana 2 ¼ organic oats ½ cup dark chocolate chips ¼ cup honey ½ cup peanut/almond/ macadamia nut butter 2 Tbs good quality cocoa (NOMU is good) 2 Tbs mixed seeds ¼ cup slivered almonds 1 tsp vanilla extract 1 – 2 Tbs coffee granules (optional) ¼ tsp sea salt Method: Preheat oven to 180 C Grease and line a square brownie tin (approx. 20cm x 20cm) Blend ¼ of the oats until they are powdered. Place into a bowl. Blend the banana until it too is a puree, Add to bowl. Add the remaining ingredients and mix well – you can get the kiddies involved here to do the mixing! Press into the tin and use the back of a spoon to smooth down. Bake for 20 -25 mins. Allow to cool and remove from pan, wrap in wax wrap and store in a container in the fridge. Diversification – How Important Is It? Shaun Latter – Quaestor Wealth

I

t is little surprise that African Bank (ABIL) has been on the lips of most in the investment management industry. Many concerned South African investors have been nervously trying to ascertain the exposure within their chosen funds, and a collective sigh of relief was felt when most were notified that their exposure, and subsequent financial loss, was negligible. The Reserve Bank rescue move didn’t harm either.

But not all investors were so lucky. There were a handful of fund managers whose bold overweight position in the stock was sternly punished and served as an expensive lesson. For those of us viewing the developments from a distance, we have to ask what lessons there are for us to learn. For one, we are reminded that risk is not one dimensional. It is certainly not restricted to market risk, or volatility, which is how much an asset or market goes up or down in any given year. What is highlighted in this instance is concentration risk – having all your eggs (or too much of your money) in one basket.

Concentration risk is often overlooked and many in this position are reduced to a ‘make or break’ outcome. The problem with this approach is that it ignores the fundamental principle of diversification. In other words, the outcome of your investment is too

dependent on the success or failure of one particular asset. A classic example of this is business owners and/or farmers, particularly those who have been successful in their trade or profession, who believe that they “could make more money if they invested money back into their business/farm”. Frequently, this is true. However, the risk is that something unforeseen breaks the cycle and the business/asset is negatively y impacted. There are many examples of this as the world changes and shapes the way we spend our money. I remember in the early ‘90’s when car phones were all the rage! Those distribution channels may well have experienced some challenges with the introduction of cell phones. What about the pharmacist whose retirement plan was his three highly profitable pharmacies….before legislation on medicine pricing changed and forced him to close his doors? What impact will we see with land redistribution and its potential effect on farmers whose entire wealth is tied up in their land? The scenarios are endless.

The bottom line is, whatever your personal situation, diversification is an investment fundamental that cannot be ignored in wealth creation. It should be critically considered and intelligently applied. If this is all sounding a bit Greek, perhaps it’s time to engage a financial professional to translate the investment garble and decipher whether any other risks lurk deep within your portfolio.

Do You Know

What's In Your Skin Care Products Stephanie Wills - Lifestyle Health

W

hen we think of a detox we think of eating clean, organic food and drinking pure, natural liquids. But did you ever consider that changing your skin care products would be a necessary part of the process as well?

Rather than being an impenetrable barrier, our skin is highly permeable. We absorb up to 60% of what we put on it and kids absorb approximately 40-50% more than adults! It is therefore essential that we know that what we're applying is completely natural, free from harmful chemicals and, most importantly, is safe for our children. Side Note It is a scary, yet little known fact, that the FDA (American agency that regulates the cosmetics industry) does not regulate skin care products as they should. On their website it says: “Under the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic (FD&C) Act, cosmetics and their ingredients are not required to undergo approval before they are sold to the public...” As a result, some of the ingredients found in our skin care products include; industrial chemicals, pesticides, plasticizers, degreasers and surfactants; many of which are known carcinogens, hormone disruptors and reproductive toxins. What To Look For We've become very good at reading nutritional labels for what we put in our mouths but we're still a little clueless when it comes to what we put on our skin. So to help you, here are some of the ingredients to watch out for in your skin care products: Sulfates: e.g. sodium lauryl ether sulphate (SLES) or sodium laureth sulfate (SLS), are commonly used in foaming cosmetics such as shampoos, cleansers, shower gel and bubble bath. Sulfates are often derived from petroleum or vegetable oils that may be contaminated with pesticides. They can cause eye irritation and skin rashes, and SLS in particular is often contaminated with 1,4-dioxane; a possible human carcinogen. To try and avoid 1,4-dioxane all together watch out for any of the following ingredients: myreth, oleth, laureth, ceteareth (or any other -eth), polyoxyethylene or oxynol. Polyethylene glycol: (PEG) is another ethoxylated compound like SLS which may be contaminated with 1,4-dioxane. It functions as

a "penetration enhancer," increasing the permeability of the skin to allow greater absorption of the product (including any harmful ingredients!). PEG itself is a breast carcinogen, may harm the nervous system and if used on broken skin can cause irritation and systemic toxicity. It is widely used in cosmetics such as thickeners, softeners and moisturecarriers including baby care products (how scary!) and sunscreens. Lead: Found mostly in make-up; especially lipstick. Lead is a known neurotoxin that can cause neurodevelopmental problems in children. It has also been linked to miscarriages and infertility. Synthetic colours & pigments: Are made from coal tar. They contain heavy metal salts that may deposit toxins into the skin, causing skin sensitivity and irritation. Studies have shown that almost all synthetic colours are carcinogenic. To identify them they are labelled as FD&C or D&C, followed by a colour and a number e.g. FD&C YELLOW 5 or D&C RED 27. Synthetic fragrances: From allergens and synthetizers (reactors) to phthalates and neurotoxins, these are just a few of the classes of chemicals that fall under this category. A loophole in the law allows companies to keep from disclosing them on ingredient labels so long as they’re listed under “fragrance”. Phthalates in particular should be avoided (also labelled as DBP, DEP and butyl ester). They are known endocrine disruptors that mimic hormones and may alter genital development, decrease sperm counts and cause birth defects as well as negatively affect liver and kidney health. Parabens: Are used in an estimated 75-90% of all cosmetics as a preservative. They have been shown to mimic the action of the female hormone estrogen, which can drive the growth of breast tumours. Parabens may also interfere with male reproductive functions, and have been linked with several other health issues such as cancer, endocrine disorders, immunotoxicity, neurotoxicity and skin irritation. In addition, studies indicate that certain parabens, when applied on to the skin, react with UVB leading to increased skin aging and DNA damage. Parabens may be listed as;

Methyl, Ethyl or Propyl paraben (E218, E214 or E216), Butylparaben; Benzyl, Methyl, Ethyl, Propyl, Butyl parahydroxybenzoic acid or Parahydroxybenzoate. Formaldehyde: Yes, the same chemical used to preserve dead bodies may also be in your cosmetics! Look for DMDM hydantoin, diazolidinyl urea, imidazolidinyl urea, methenamine and quarternium-15.These ingredients are used as preservatives but also release small amounts of formaldehyde over time. This toxic ingredient is a known carcinogen that may also cause skin and eye irritations and trigger allergies. Antibacterial compounds: Such as triclosan and chlorphenesin, are used mainly in antiperspirants/ deodorants, cleansers, and hand sanitizers. They are possible endocrine disruptors, environmental toxins and may contribute to antibiotic resistance in bacteria. Triclosan can also cause skin and eye irritations and is a suspected carcinogen. Siloxanes: Look for ingredients ending in "-siloxane" or "-methicone" or D4, D5 and D6. Siloxanes are used in a variety of cosmetics to soften, smooth and moisten. They interfere with human hormone function and are possible reproductive toxins that may impair human fertility. D5 has been shown to cause uterine tumours and disrupt the immune system. It can also adversely affect the neurotransmitter dopamine. Sunscreen chemicals: such as avobenzone, benzphenone, oxybenzone and octylmethoxycinnamate, have been shown to disrupt endocrine function. This may cause the abnormal development of foetuses and growing children. These chemicals also generate free radicals, may damage DNA and could lead to cancer. Titanium dioxide and zinc oxide are much safer alternatives. Benzoyl Peroxide: used predominantly in acne products, may promote tumour growth. It acts as a mutagen in the body causing DNA damage. It is also toxic if inhaled and is an eye, skin and respiratory irritant. Aluminium salts: found in antiperspirants, are responsible for clogging the pores that release sweat under your arms. Not

?

only does this block one of your body's routes for detoxification (releasing toxins via your underarm sweat), but the body absorbs the aluminium and deposits it in your breast tissue.

Aluminium salts mimic the hormone estrogen which increases breast cancer risk. With prolonged antiperspirant use, the salts can accumulate over time, exposing the body to massive amounts of aluminium. In the body it is a poisonous and highly toxic metal that may be more dangerous than mercury.

For more information on any of these products and expert advice, please visit the new upgraded Lifestyle Health, Shop 24A, Lifestyle Shopping Centre, Ballito 032 946 0441.

As you can see, we need to be more aware of what we put in and on our bodies to maintain better health and well being. As consumers we have the right to know what's in our skin care products and how these ingredients may be affecting us. Natural, organic and chemical-free cosmetics are becoming much more widely available and feasible (come see our selection at Lifestyle Health). I encourage you to go through your skin care products (especially those of your babies and children), toss out the chemical-laden ones and switch to a more natural (and safer) alternative.

of tastes and flavours, the soaring vistas the fabulous little country shops, you return to a little piece of paradise in a field lavender in Franschhoek – a perfumed garden, where time stands still and world becomes very small and comfortable. There is a distinctly Provençale feeling here – a kind of understated continental sophistication that works well in the setting. The rooms are comfortably appointed with everything you could wish for and, when you awaken the next day refreshed and revitalized, switch on the kettle in your room and enjoy a cup of tea or coffee as you take in the dawning of a new day in your own private courtyard, before joining us for tucking in to a breakfast of your choice in the tastefully appointed dining room. You’ll love it …

f there is an upside to the currentweakness of the Rand in global currency terms, it is that many South Africans are choosing to explore South Africa instead of being fleeced overseas, and what they are discovering is in many ways comparable to the best that Europe has to offer.

On a recent trip to te winelands of the Western Cape we experienced a taste of what it is that is fuelling the astonishing increase in local tourism revenue – and it is spectacularly delicious! One is quite simply spoiled for choice when it comes to superb cuisine, astonishingly beautiful scenery, and fabulous hospitality and while it is not exactly cheap in local terms, when compared with what a similar experience in Provence might set you back, it’s a steal! One of the treasures we discovered is Lavender Boutique Farm Guest House, an exclusive little gem nestling in a field of purple Lavender and Mountains that seem to extend for as far as the eye can see in Franschhoek. It’s the only establishment that I know of in the region that is so exquisitely located and so heavenly scented – it has to be experienced! aunching in October, when Grant Harper and Terry Scott return from London will be all the latest trends from the catwalk. A sneak preview has an emphasis on short spunky cuts and long hair worn loose, care free and uncontrived. No more flat iron curls but a loose natural spring wave.

This is all achieved by bringing back the permanent wave or "an easier on the tongue" semi-perm. This will enable straight hair to move with the soft free flow of the spring look following the current runway trends. Lovely soft pastel blondes, strawberry blondes and copper blondes are the way to go. For brunettes, a rich golden undertone, not the stark red or violet is what we are looking for. No more over highlighting the hair as the sun is a natural lightener. Spring is a time for rejuvenation, reinvention, free looks and free spirited hair. These looks are achieved by expert cutting and colouring by our superb team and the use of professional homecare products, which are available in salon or at our Terry Scott Hair Lab.

Tracy Sue du Plessis – True Passion

Tracy Sue du Plessis is an internationally qualified BKS Iyengar Yoga Teacher, Classical Pilates Instructor, Personal Trainer, Massage and Beauty Therapist who recently opened True Passion, a fully equipped studio and massage centre in Salt Rock. She will now contribute regularly to our Health and Wellness features to share her knowledge and passion.

M

Iyengar Yoga – An Introduction Tracy Sue du Plessis

I

dedicate my first brief article to the late Mr BKS Iyengar who sadly passed away at the age of 95 last Wednesday, 20th August. He has left a hole in our hearts as Yogi’s but his legacy will live on forever.

This is the style of Yoga that I teach at my studio True Passion in Salt Rock.

Mr BKS Iyengar also known to many as Guruji dedicated his life to Yoga. Born in 1918 and leading an extremely unhealthy childhood in India, at the age of 14 he started practicing Yoga under the guide of his brother in law, Sri T. Krishnamacharya to try and

overcome his ill health. At the age of 17he started teaching Yoga. He was the Indian Guru responsible for bringing Yoga to the West. Guided by the principles of Patanjali Yoga, Iyengar emphasized form and postures, called asanas, to realign weak areas of the body. He also introduced the use of props, such as belts, ropes, blankets and weights, which enabled him and other people with health problems to build strength and perform challenging exercises. Iyengar yoga gradually became recognized as a treatment for headaches, hypertension, arthritis and other medical conditions. Iyengar differs from the other styles of yoga by these four key elements: Technique – precision of body alignment through the performance of asana and pranayama. Sequence – practicing specific combinations of asanas and breathing exercises correctly ensure the desired positive effect.

Timing – is defined by the time spent in each asana correctly. Props – work as supports or correction. Iyengar Yoga is ideal for all levels - from complete beginner to an adept Yogi - all are able and equally challenged. Mr IYENGAR – GURUJI, I salute your life long contribution towards Yoga. I never had the privilege of being taught by Mr Iyengar personally even though I spent two lengthy times in India, but I have had the privilege of teaching by amazing Senior Iyengar Yoga teachers in South Africa and Australia, who were taught directly by him, for that I’m grateful and excited to share what I have been taught. If you have any interest in Iyengar Style Yoga, please visit my webpage www.tracysuetruepassion.co.za or give me a call 0794481033. I have a fully equipped Iyengar Style Studio in Salt Rock.

y Dad used to wake up and marvel at what a wonderful day it was. My sister and I thought this was old toppie stuff and tragic that he had nothing better to comment on. Oh my word I am now so grateful for the teaching of positivity and enjoyment of the mundane. There were a heck of a lot of wonderful days living on the Highveld so the result was he was a happy man. Everyone is so busy stressing and fussing. Yoga brings one into the consciousness of nothingness. Everyone strives to get somewhere, to be someone, losing something along the way. When last did you sit silently looking out at something natural - a hillside, the ocean, a group of our beautiful North Coast trees?

If you feel awkward doing nothing, hold a book in your lap, have note paper and a pen to hand to jot down your thoughts or ideas or do a little sketch, but make the time predominantly about doing nothing . Your body needs unpolluted air, clean water and food that is free from harmful substances in order to survive. Don’t just rely on medication and health care – be your own carer. Yoga helps you to understand that it is more than just a body. It is a life-long companion and a mirror. Supporting your body’s health is a profound act of love. To be grounded speaks, about a connection to our physical, material reality, our earth. Indeed, our feet on the ground are our most solid and constant connection to the physical tangible world. When we are ungrounded, we are lost in our

thoughts or swept up in emotions. We are not comfortably in the present reality or in our centres. Gravity is a natural force that keeps us grounded and connected to the earth. Get in touch with your sense of gravity – its pure physics. Your skeleton is the bearer of your weight – for this to take place effectively you have to find spinal alignment. Learn to sit cross legged on the ground with lifted bones and muscles and just be compassionately present with yourself. Let go of effort and agitation and breathe into the moment -tomoment reality of your environment. If your feet are frozen, set about creating healthy flexible feet. Don’t worry about the finished advanced pose – enjoy the preparation stage. You will get all the benefit and joy of just doing as much as you can. Hope and change are not things you passively wait for but things you propel into action. Stay motivated by the implicit promise of progress. or some time now I have been following Dr. Joe Dispenza’s work related to Neural Plasticity.

Dr. Dispenza’s newest book “You Are the Placebo” is an eye opener. In the book he discusses the current daily stresses everyone is living with, he says “Welcome to the 21stcentury version of living in survival mode”. He explains “You have less energy in your internal environment for: cell growth and repair; longterm building projects on a cellular level; and healing; when that energy is being channelled elsewhere. The cells shut down, they no longer communicate with one another, and they become ‘selfish’. It is not time for routine maintenance… or improvements, it’s time for defence” “The whole system becomes weakened as genes are compromised”. Dr. Dispeza likens it to “living in a country where 98% of the resources go toward defence, and nothing is left for schools, libraries, road building and repair, communication systems, growing of food etc.” He says “No organism in nature is designed to withstand • the effects of long-term stress”. Basically chaos reigns, our bodies • start disintegrating, developing • disease and chronic illnesses. • Drs Dispenza and Fannin are • showing that the Placebo effect is very real and is an extremely powerful tool for you and me to use to heal ourselves; in fact it is equally effective as the Nocebo effect which is the disbelief that we can be healed. Interestingly the Placebo effect is growing daily, in years gone by the effect

was as little as 10%, recent studies are showing it increasing to as much as 90%. If we are using less than 5% of our brains capacity what is the rest of it doing? Maybe we just have not accessed its full capacity consciously!!! As Henry Ford said “Whether you think you can, or you think you can't--you're right.” Sherrene Roselea is a Body Stress Release practitioner - hands on technique, to assist clients with body stress & health issues PSYCH-K facilitator – ‘Ever wonder why your life doesn’t always reflect the wisdom you possess?’ Ballito - (032) 946-1630 Umhlanga – 082 367 3667 health.e.me@gmail.com

How to Cycle With the Technique Of A Pro

B

raking is a surprisingly complex skill that, as with all aspects of bike handling, only improves with practice. As you may have noticed, your bike has two brakes – one on the front wheel and one on the back. When braking, it’s important to use both of them. The front brake is most effective at stopping you. A lot of newer cyclists shy away from putting too much front brake on, fearing they will go

over the bars or the front wheel will slide out from under them. These scenarios can occur, but only if the front is deployed in the wrong situations. In normal, dry conditions, applying more front brake – or even solely front brake – will stop you faster and 99 per cent of the time will not result in a skid.

When traction is poor (eg. in wet conditions, when there is a lot of loose gravel on the road, or in the

unusual circumstance of braking whilst cornering), the front brake is a riskier strategy, and may well end up in a skid. In these conditions, use the back brake to slow you down. Rather than grabbing handfuls of brake, increase the pressure slowly, giving yourself plenty of time to slow and stop. Practice braking hard, and then releasing the brake and reapplying it. This is a good strategy for a faster stop, as it can help you gain

BRAKING some control over your bike and prevent a skid situation – a little like the ABS brakes on a car. Some braking tips • When applying the front brake hard to stop as quickly as possible, lock your arms out in front of you to brace yourself against the deceleration. • While braking, shift your weight as far back as you can comfortably go. By keeping your centre of gravity low and far back, you’ll maximise your traction and minimise the risk of going head over handlebars. • A good tip in the wet is to lightly apply your brakes so that the pads drag lightly on the wheels’ rims. This will help clear excess water and improve the efficacy of the brakes. • As a rule, feather your brakes to slow gradually. Especially in a group ride, avoid grabbing handfuls of brake.

Outstanding Service at Honda Umhlanga

I

recently had a problem with my car that couldn’t be fixed by our local mechanic in Ballito. I drive a Honda and the diff kept engaging which sounded ominous so I phoned the Honda dealership in Gateway expecting the worst. They quickly identified the problem - the diff oil was contaminated and needed to be replaced. On arrival service was professional and efficient. I was offered a lift by numerous staff while waiting in the lovely complimentary coffee café. They kept in touch continuously with the progress, I was called an hour after car booked in and given quote which I accepted. Then I was called again to say quote will be slightly less, such honesty. I got another call when car was ready. When I collected it my car was spotless and looked like new.I am so impressed with the service at Honda Umhlanga, I felt the need to share it with everybody. Thank you, Danie and all at Honda Umhlanga – your service is outstanding. Kerryn Geyer, Ballito
