N our previous edition I raised the issue of the hefty hike in the cost of water to homes in the greater Ballito area. This appears to be a most irregular increase in the cost of service delivery and I have just received feedback from local ward councilors Colin Marsh and Malcolm Hubner indicating that they are looking into the matter. Malcolm Hubner says there appears to be a political agenda at play - the hike has been implemented by the Ilembe District Municipality (ILD), a minority shareholder in the Sembcorp Siza Water ILD joint venture. This plan gives more free water to township users and punishes users in the suburbs with increases way above the acceptable norm. You may only fully realise this when you receive your adjusted water bill in a month or two, but by then it will be too late to do anything about it. Your councilors have promised to look after your interests in return for your vote and the rather generous perks that go with the job, so perhaps a show of support from you will spur them on to take swift action in tackling the issue. Contact Colin Marsh on 083 782 1011 and Malcolm Hubner on 083 250 9787 because you deserve better. On a more positive note, I recently discovered the benefit of downscaling and it reminded me of a story that I will tell you shortly. Our sons have left the nest now and have started new lives in Cape Town. We miss them, but we are happy that they are making their way in the world and we do what we can to help them to get established. I had a rather wonderful collection of guitars, many of them hand–picked by my friend and expert luthier, Alec Mackay who really knows a good guitar when he sees it, but I hardly played some of them because, if the truth be told, I had too many. Well, my boys had set their sights on a selection of instruments that I eventually packed up and couriered down to them last week. So many of my treasured old friends have gone now, but I have rediscovered the pleasure of playing the few that I have left and it’s true…less really is more. The thing is, too much of anything is a problem. Test that theory and you’ll find it to be true. Now, this is the story that I want to share with you…I don’t know who wrote it, but I find it very poignant and it may move you too.
Recently, I overheard a mother and daughter in their last moments together at the airport as the daughter's departure had been announced. Standing near the security gate, they hugged and the mother said: "I love you and I wish you enough." The daughter replied, "Mom, our

FACTORS INFLUENCING THE SALE OF A PROPERTY.

IDA DU PLOOY HARCOURTS DOLPHIN COAST
T
HE THREE BIG W’S OF SELLING PROPERTY.
1.
WHY ?
Contrary to popular belief price is not the only factor that influences the sale of a property, the truth is that there is much more that goes into selling a property. As an agent the first conversation with a seller looking to list their property normally focuses on the price they want for their house. However, some of the main factors in selling your property are: 1.Motivation 2.Time 3.Pricing 4.Marketing MOTIVATION: The WHY. The question you should ask yourself is: “Why do I want to sell my property” Your reason for selling is actually the most important factor when listing your property to sell. Reasons for relocating may be to move to a different town because you have landed a new position, or your health is forcing you to down scale. More often than not financial realities are the reason to move into a new location. Your motivation to sell will have a huge impact on your property listing. The question you have to ask yourself is: “Do I have Time to wait for the market to pay me the price I think my property is worth, or is the sale urgent to move on and price accordingly?
2.
WHAT ?
The second important factor in selling your property revolves around the WHAT you are placing on the market. So often sellers list their properties without taking a good look at how their homes are competing with other properties on the market. Comparing the condition, location, size and appearance of their property should tell them if their property will attract the right buyer at the best price. Many of the property owners live elsewhere and may have rented their property. Without assessing the current status of the property they may find that that their valuable investment has lost its appeal due to neglect. It is wise to contact a reputable agent to do an honest assessment as to what you should do to make the property appealing to the public. Often something as simple as de-cluttering is all it takes to help sell your house. Ask yourself: Would a beautifully staged property attract more buyers than my old, cluttered and tired looking house? Spending some money towards the presentation of your property before you list to sell may just result in a quick and profitable sale.
3.
WHO ?
As a real estate agent of 15 years in Ballito, I suggest that you carefully consider who you entrust with the sale of you property’s marketing.
Make sure you check that the agent is a registered agent with the EAAB. Ask the agent for a marketing plan on how he/she will go about presenting your property to its best advantage and to the widest audience. There are many excellent agents in Ballito but it remains your responsibility to select the ones you trust most. The question of Sole Mandates are often feared, but as any agent worth his salt will tell you, a wellpriced and presentable property sells quicker if you entrust the agent of your choice with the mandate. When you are every ones listing, you are no-ones concern. Don’t fall into the old trap of open mandates and un-cared for properties. Check out your competition: 4.THE TRUTH – Stats to consider. Stats by Light Stone regarding the property market in Ballito from April 2013 to March 2014: Number of properties competing in the market: Sectional title properties on sale 2496 (39.30% of the market) Freehold properties on sale 1417 (22.31% of the market) Estate properties on sale 2438 (38.39% of the market) TOTAL: 6351 properties on the market Age of recent buyers: 18 – 35 years old +-18% 36-49 years old +-34% 50-64 years old +-38% 65 and older +-10% Income distribution: Average household income range in Ballito: Wealthy LSM10 High R51000 – R67000 6074 adults Super wealthy LSM10 High R75000 and above 1098 adults Number of sales:

Freehold
238 223 256 289
Realizing that 6350 properties were competing for 674 buyers’ attention is a sobering reality. As an Estate Agent it is my job to give the seller sufficient validated facts about the current market conditions. The challenge is to price and present the property competitively in order to reach the sellers goal to have his property sold aligned to his time frame and reason for selling. VERY parent has the same dreams for their child – happiness, independence, a great education, friendship, love and the opportunity to achieve their highest potential. And every family follows whichever path is necessary to achieve those dreams. For more and more families, here in South Africa and all over the world, their options are limited, because their child’s challenges are different. One of those challenges is called Autism Spectrum Disorder. Ashton International College, Ballito is striving to give parents an educational option in the form of a specialist wing, as a part of our campus - The Grace Wing. I joined the Ashton family two months ago to help prepare for the opening of our doors in January 2015. And I have never been more excited! In what I am learning is true Ashton
tradition, we are pulling out all the stops to make this a world-class venture. We are creating a unique, inclusive education opportunity for students with autism, to truly be a part of our Ashton family, while still giving each child the right kind of structure using an eclectic blend of world’s best practice in autism intervention. We will have specially trained staff in a classroom of eight students and a full-time Occupational and Speech therapist in the wing designed specifically for students with autism. Even our coaches are excitedly preparing a sports development programme for our ‘Gracelings!’
But still that’s not what has me so excited!
The exceptional aspect of our Grace Wing is our carousel system. In this system, we will over time, rotate every student into a mainstream class of their peers, in the learning areas where he has achieved academically and when he has acquired the skills he needs in a classroom. Ultimately it is our desire that the child would attend Ashton’s mainstream classes full-time. With each child carouselling at their own pace, while learning the
skills he needs to thrive at Ashton, our ‘Gracelings’ have the option and support to smoothly integrate into our school. Our children all take different paths to achieve their potential. The Grace Wing at Ashton is simply one more path which will set up the new additions to our family for success.

HE Green Gallery in the Flanders Mall, Mount Edgecombe, is renowned for top quality art and outstanding exhibitions, the latest of which is imminent and will feature a beautiful collection of artworks with the artists’ signature work on show. On Thursday 2nd October at 6pm the Flanders Mall will be buzzing with excitement as The Green Gallery treats art lovers to a veritable feast of colour, shape and form from some very exciting artists who will be in attendance to chat to you about their work. Pietermaritzburg born Sharleen Boaden is a fabulous impressionist who strives to capture the emotive quality in the subjects she portrays and draws the viewer in with the essence of the subject rather than by painting replicas of real life. Coral Spencer, born in Durban and schooled in America, has a keen interest in body language and relationships between people which she plays out in placement of figures in her captivating paintings. "I paint light and the human figure in its landscape." Kirsty Hall finds inspiration in nature and her love
for birds is clearly evident in her perfect portrayal of them in her paintings. She says that she sells her paintings to raise money for food and care for creatures great and small. Lieze Meyer works with a minimal colour palette. Her paintings are monochromatic and have a compelling calmness about them. She creates images that evoke a sense of understanding of the subjects she selects. Lieze is another artist with a passion for animals.
You are cordially invited to visit the Green Gallery to enjoy this wonderful selection of works‌you will probably discover a treasure that you will enjoy forever! T’S a dying art; these days people are quite simply too busy to be innovative. There is so much that needs to be done
that we don’t have the time to sit down, clear the space and think innovatively. Instead, we outsource… Here are five powerful principles to help you think innovatively:
1.Formulate urgent and intriguing questions
A problem cannot be solved with the same thinking from which it originated, so you need to ask yourself questions that expose the problem. These questions need to be asked with a real sense of urgency – a burning desire from within to want to solve the problem. With this approach, you will go about it in a different way.
2.Design a whole new strategy
If you do as you have always done, you will get what you have always got. Make an unusual start and break the patterns you tend to follow. Creatively take on an approach with new concepts, new combinations and cross borders of subject fields. Stirring things up a little does wonders to your innovative thinking.
3.Work from a base of your
Radio Life & Style 88.0 FM –
strengths
Your success and strengths empower and encourage you so don’t get stuck over-analysing things. Strengths are a source of curiosity, courage and most importantly results, so challenge yourself to come up with as many meanings to the problem as is possible.
4.Encourage the quality of the interaction
Different types of conversations are needed in different phases, so encourage help from people with different social and communication skills. Listen carefully to their input without forming an opinion in your mind. Once you have heard them out, add your thoughts to build upon what they have said – keeping the interaction positive and constructive versus knocking ideas down before they have been thought through.
To encourage original ideas you must be open to receiving new information. The challenge is to give and get as many meanings as is possible. Without even knowing it, we could be thinking and acting based on limiting beliefs due to the paradigms we form in our minds. Clear your mind of the clutter and try to combine things that you have never combined before. Unpack and remove all those assumptions and try to establish what the question is behind the solution you are looking for. Then ask yourself that question over and over again. By starting with the end in mind, you will be amazed at how the innovative thoughts begin to flow.
5.Build something together
ON TRACK FOR DECEMBER LAUNCH It’s Official – Radio Life & Style is soon to become the voice of Ballito, broadcasting live from the Lifestyle Centre Ballito on 88.0FM and online to listeners on mobile devices and in select coffee shops, waiting rooms, dealerships, stores and offices across the region. Radio Life & Style will be managed by former Radio 5 deejay Dave Charles, and styled along the lines of what Radio 5, Capital Radio, and the other great commercial music stations used to sound like. This is where you will tune in to find out what’s happening in Ballito and to enjoy the best music of today and yesterday – songs that you remember with love…the soundtrack of your life! What we are looking for now is talent – and if you want to have a crack at auditioning to become part of the on air team, or you have technical skills for the production team, we’d love to hear from you. Send your details to editor@lifeandstyle.org.za and we’ll get back to you if we like what we see!

For adrenaline junkies the highly anticipated future Numz Adventure Island water park, that will be breaking ground next year and is set to be the biggest water park in the southern hemisphere, will only be a stone’s throw away. Homeowners can also enjoy the nearby Tinley Manor Beach located just 3km away from the estate, which is due to have a beach house built on it for the exclusive use of homeowners. Residents of The Village @ Palm Lakes will enjoy the Palm Lakes lifestyle that incorporates all of this and more. LOVE Your Garden
I
F ever there was a season to be jolly, it has to be Spring. Rain or no rain, buds are budding; bees are buzzing; frogs are croaking and birds are doing whatever birds do and there is an anticipation of new birth. Gardens, at the time of writing, are a little sad, through lack of rain. Some sadder than others through neglect and lack of interest, but those gardens that have been nurtured on a regular basis, throughout the year, are giving great pleasure to
homeowners, in spite of the present weather conditions, by the very fact that they are fed regularly and receive some water. However, do not despair. Take a good look at the areas close to your living and entertainment areas, for we’ll shortly be in the season of outdoor living, and see what improvements you can make. A pot well positioned; an eyecatching splash of colour; are your shade areas well planted; is the lawn in reasonable condition; are there too many weeds? All these issues need to be addressed and the best way to deal with this is to make a list of what has to be done and tick them off upon completion. A visit to a good Nursery, where staff are trained and

Use your Cell phone or other modern technology to take pictures of bad areas and bring these along with you, so that we are all on the same page. Summer seedlings are starting to make their appearance in the Nursery, with Portulaca; Dahlias; Asters; and the old faithfulls such as Petunias; Snap Dragons; Asters; Lobelia; Alyssum; Gazanias; Marigolds; Salvias; the old fashioned Elfin Impatiens are back on the shelves; Delphiniums – oh the list goes on and on. NATASHA BARNES GRANDE DIPLOME CORDON BLEU COOKERY SILWOOD KITCHENS
THIS Classic British dessert is
sometimes known as a “Frangipane Tart. “ I have given the famous tart a makeover – using chopped nuts instead of ground almonds and the result speaks for itself. Serve warm or cold with Mascarpone cheese. HOW DO I BAKE BLIND? Pre-heat the oven to 190C. Put a large baking sheet into the oven to heat up. Roll out the chilled pastry and fill the base. Prick well with a fork to ensure the pastry does not rise up and bubble while baking. Use a circle of baking paper, not wax paper, slightly larger than the base, scrunch it up into a ball and then smooth out to fit the base snugly. Fill the centre with raw rice or dried beans to keep the paper in place. Bake at 190C for 15minutes. Remove from the oven, reduce the temperature to 180C. Remove the paper and rice or beans. Return the pastry base to the oven and continue to bake for a further 8 - 10 minutes or until the pasty is golden brown. The pastry INGREDIENTS PASTRY 500ml (2 cups) flour 62ml (1/4 cup) castor sugar 2ml (pinch) salt 150g cold butter, cubed 1 large egg, separated 5ml (1 teaspoon) white vinegar Approximately 45ml -80ml (3 tablespoons - 1/3 cup) ice cold water 30ml (2 Tablespoons) raspberry Jam METHOD Preheat oven to 190C. Place a baking sheet in the oven to pre-heat. Prepare the baking paper and beans for baking blind. Sift flour and salt into a large bowl. Rub in the butter until mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs. Alternatively sift the flour and salt directly into the bowl of your food processor, add the cold butter
should be thoroughly cooked before continuing with the recipe. Check to see that there are no “damp” places left. If so, return the base to the oven for a few extra minutes. Remove and store used rice or beans in a glass jar for another day. NOTE: This recipe calls for whole raw almonds with the skins on roughly ground in a spice grinder or a food processor before you proceed. The weight is given for the chopped almonds, not whole. Finer ground almonds from the supermarket can substitute for chopped almonds but the texture will be different. FILLING: 190ml (3/4 cup) sugar 150g Butter 3 eggs 1 Egg Yolk 5ml Vanilla essence 2,5ml (1/2 teaspoon) salt 200g whole raw Almonds, roughly ground Yeast of 11/2 lemons 45ml (3 tablespoons) flaked almonds and use the chopping blade to process the mixture into fine breadcrumbs. While the blade is running add the egg yolk, vinegar and ice water. Process until the mixture just comes together. Remove the mixture and Press everything into a neat ball. Wrap in cling wrap and refrigerate for 30 minutes. Roll out the pastry on a lightly floured surface. Grease a 24cm - 25cm fluted loose bottomed tart tin. Transfer the pastry to the tin, trim the edges neatly and prick the base well with a fork. Prepare the base for baking blind. Place the fluted tin on a preheated baking sheet. Bake blind at 190C for 15 minutes. Reduce heat to 180C. Remove the pastry from the oven, working quickly, discard the baking paper and beans. Brush the pastry base with a little beaten egg-white before returning the base to the oven. Continue to bake for a further 8 to 10 minutes or until the pastry is golden brown and completely cooked. Set aside to cool considerably before brushing the inside of the pastry with the raspberry jam. Reduce the oven temperature to 170C. Prepare the filling. Cream the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Gradually add the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Stir in Vanilla Essence. Fold in the almonds and lemon yeast. Gently turn the mixture into the prepared pastry shell. Bake in the centre of the oven at 170C for 20 minutes, remove from the oven, sprinkle the top with the flaked almonds, return to the oven and continue to bake for a further 15 to 20 minutes or until golden brown. Makes one large tart.
The rediscovery of an aerogram from Sri Lanka with a carefully inscribed recipe is what led to The Culinary Adventures of a Travelling Cook, a collection of uncomplicated recipes – both gourmet and every day. Written by our food correspondent – master cook and artist Natasha Barnes - from her numerous trips locally and abroad, this book shares many humorous accounts of her travels across the globe. Her experiences are relived through the foods she encountered and enjoyed in countries as diverse as the USA, Vietnam, Argentina, Ethiopia and Burma. You will love this book not only because the recipes are so expertly conveyed, but the pictures are gorgeous and the written content is robust and entertaining. It’s published by Struik and available now at leading bookstores at a retail price of R350 and will make a fabulous Christmas present for anyone with a taste for adventure!
I first tasted Lavender shortbread in Standon, a tiny picturesque Cotswolds
village tucked away in fairest England. One sunny afternoon in July I had the pleasure of High tea with a Famous art dealer. His Wife had baked these lovely little crisp buttery shortbreads, infused with Lavender, I was so interested in the recipe, that the opportunity of promoting my work throughout the United Kingdom – was not even discussed that day. True artist to the core, I could think of nothing else for the rest of the day but getting into the kitchen and trying my hand at Lavender shortbread. TIP: A spring of dried or fresh Lavender stored in a jar of castor sugar produces a wonderful aromatic flavoured sugar that will enhance your baking. Both the flowers and the leaves can be used in baking. Lavender has numerous other uses, a few dried sprigs in the grocery or linen cupboard will keep fish moths away for months. INGREDIENTS 250g salted Butter, at room temperature 125ml (½ cup) castor sugar 500ml (2 cups) sifted flour 62ml (1/4 cup) corn flour (Maizena) 2,5ml (pinch) salt 30ml (2 tablespoons) chopped fresh lavender METHOD: Cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy. This should not take long as the butter should be very soft to start with, but not melted. Add the remaining ingredients and use your hands to bring the mixture together. Do not overwork the dough. Press the mixture into a greased square or oblong ovenproof dish or tray, or into two 20cm –diameter cake tins. Prick the base well with a fork. Bake at 160C for 35 to 40 minutes or until the edges start to colour to golden brown and look a little crispy around the edge. Remove at once and leave to cool for a few minutes in the tin. Then use a sharp knife to cut the shortbread into equal pieces. Remove carefully and leave to cool completely on a wire cooling rack. Store airtight. Makes about 15 to 20 biscuits depending on the size.

ATIONAL BRAAI DAY (National Heritage Day) is South Africa’s annual day of celebration. We encourage our readers to unite around fires, share our heritage and wave our flag on 24 September. With all our problems, this is still, in our opinion, a great country and together we can make it better. National Heritage Day is a public holiday in South Africa. Across race, language, region and religion, we all share one common heritage – the braai. Although the ingredients may differ, the one thing that never changes is that when we have something to celebrate, we light fires, gather round and enjoy good company, good food and good times. It’s all about being together and sharing.
So let’s share our heritage, light the braai fire, and wave our flag on 24 September.

WHY EXERCISE
WHEN YOU CAN LOSE WEIGHT BY DIET ALONE!
BRENDAN BROEDELET INNOVATIONS HAIR ACADEMY JOHAN DORFLING - PERSONAL TRAINER
The "METABOLIC SYNDROME and EXERCISE CONNECTION" WHAT IS METABOLIC SYNDROME? Metabolism refers to ALL the biochemical processes that occur in the body. Metabolic Syndrome is a series of metabolic abnormalities that considerably increase the risk of developing type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. So all those bad lifestyle choices for example, smoking, drinking, fast foods and lack of exercise, will leave you with excess fat deposits in the abdomen, insulin resistance which leads to high sugar levels in the blood high "bad" cholesterol and low "good" cholesterol and raised blood pressure levels. A large ticking Time Bomb is what you are left with. It’s a matter of when the bomb explodes and not "if". So what can you do, today, right now with immediate direct results? Put the newspaper down, stand up, lace up and get moving. So how does exercise help Metabolic Syndrome? EXERCISE IS MEDICINE, going
for a 20min walk right now will do more for you than swallowing another pill. Exercise alone improves insulin action and cholesterol levels and reduces the risk of type 2 diabetes without weight reduction. Now is the time more than ever to focus on "FITNESS rather than FATNESS".

E
VEN those fortunate few who are blessed with platinumplated self-esteem experience times when they fall out of love with the image in the mirror and their thoughts start flirting with that magical word, ‘makeover’. In TV reality shows, makeovers are synonymous with miracles; female frumps turn into femme fatales while men metamorphose from zero to hero with a splash of colour and the slash of the scissors. In the real world, makeovers might not guarantee a total transformation from ogre to instant ingénue à la Princess Fiona in ‘Shrek’ but, with good guidance, you can escape that creative cul-de-sac that has you feeling beige and bland and emerge looking and feeling bright and beautiful. Like any adventure, planning is essential when embarking on a makeover. Look before you leap, or you might not like where you land up! Most people kick off their makeover quest with a new cut and colour. When you have been feeling stuck in a rut, it is tempting to break out with that radical cut or colour you’ve always admired on others but never dared try yourself. Experimentation is exciting but take the time to carefully consider your choice; you don’t want to spend the next few months regretting one day of makeover madness, however exhilarating it might have been! Another danger lies in placing your fashion fate blindly in the hands of your stylist - you might find yourself sporting his or her style desires rather than your own. If you know your style personality, you are far less likely to succumb to an impulse that may leave you worse off than before you began. For example, if
you are a classic you are hard-wired to need neatly-groomed hair and the confusion of a softly-permed profusion of tousled curls will drive you nuts once the novelty wears off. Conversely, if you are a creative or a dramatic, don’t go taming that hair or toning down your vibrant colour just for the sake of a change. Romantic style personalities will be yearning for their lost locks almost as soon as they hit the salon floor, leaving them with long-term regrets for a short-term thrill. Be realistic in your expectations and trust your stylist when it comes to selecting a style that suits your hair type and growth. If your hair is moist and silky, no amount of skill on the part of your stylist will be able to make it naturally spunky and spikey, while coarse, wavy hair will never fall softly to swish around your neck. A good cut should factor in your individual root direction and growth pattern or you will struggle to maintain it once you leave the safety of the salon. A successful makeover does not create a mask to disguise you; it is about understanding and unlocking the real you - just refreshed, rejuvenated and revamped! Resist the madness of the moment and your makeover should be a magical experience. Happy Styling!

“There would have been more I love yous ... more I'm sorrys ... more I'm listenings ... but mostly, given another shot at life, I would seize every minute of it ... look at it and really see it ... try it on ... live it ... exhaust it ... and never give it back .” – Erma Bombeck – on her death bed. S
TANDARD fare on many motivation courses is the “what would you do if you only had a short time to live?... now go and do it anyway” scenario. It is crass and over-simplistic but the point is to get people thinking about something which we are genetically programmed to ignore – our own mortality. I am blessed to be able to work with those confronted with death and dying and, therefore, cannot ignore my own impermanence. This may seem somehow morbid but the truth, of course, is that we are all dying; our death has walked by our side ever since our birth. We think that it is always something that happens to other people yet none of us know what the fates have in store for us. Being aware of our own demise is the first step in living a true life; you stop worrying about the small stuff – and it is all small stuff, and appreciate every nuance of everyday. Life seems more vivid, the breeze becomes a living thing, the urgency of life all around us is seen in magnificent clarity and we realise that we live in wonder on a daily, even hourly, basis. Living in gratitude ensues as your awareness increases. Developing this awareness is
something that needs time and practice; it is too late to try and take this on board once you have been diagnosed as terminal. The process of grieving is long and complex and leaves little mental space for philosophical musings. To engender this awareness simply notice that every moment of your life is unique, it will never be the same again. Make your actions and thoughts count and ask yourself, on an ongoing basis “ how can I make sure that I leave the world better than I found it?” We are all adding to the shared experience of life and what we do in life echoes in eternity. Namaste Rod Briggs is an International Lecturer in the Mind Sciences. He has taught government departments, universities, Olympians and peak achievers in the corporate and private sectors from all over the world. He spends half the year in Europe and the USA on lecture tours but resides on the Dolphin Coast. T’S been several years in the planning and now it is about to become a reality. Virgin Active is an iconic brand among the health and fitness elite and the Big V has arrived in Ballito much to the delight of the growing tribe of fitness devotees on the North Coast.
BRUCE RENCKEN
For months now, commuters have watched the building rising majestically from the ground close to the entrance to Ballito and now, as the signage is revealed, the excitement is palpable. Rows of gleaming state-of-the-art fitness equipment and apparatus stand waiting to entertain you…the pool is full and heated to the perfect temperature…a top team of staff and personal trainers is going through final briefing in anticipation of what’s to come when the gym goes “live”. This is a big moment for Ballito – an international brand of epic proportion has just endorsed what many here have known for a while now. The little town growing up fast and
despite the inevitable growing pains this is this is where the smart money is being spent. It’s a proud moment for Bruce Rencken who, with his brother Paul, has been intimately involved in bringing Virgin Active to Ballito. Negotiations started literally years before the town started to blossom and it was never going to be easy to get the deal done because the Virgin Active team is meticulous in terms of detail and planning – they demand the best and they get it because their ethos will not accept anything less. And the best is what you will experience when you arrive here – from the fittings in the change rooms and showers to the healthy meals and drinks at the in-house Kauai restaurant - it’s first class all the way. The Technogym equipment on the gym floor is fully interactive, making your workout fun, personal and entertaining (hey, summer’s on the way and you want to look good, don’t you…) and there are so many exercise options on offer that there really is no excuse not to get involved. You don’t have to be a gym bunny to feel at home here – old, young, fit or unfit, you’ll find a warm welcome and a helping hand to get you back on track to a healthier, happier lifestyle. A brave new age of fitness has dawned in Ballito…the Big V is waiting to welcome you to their world.

wonderfully self-depreciating take on a people who were still travelling on skis and gave off the faint odour of fish until the discovery of oil made them rich just a few decades ago. The
Norwegian, according to this book, is a really quirky character, a loner, someone who rarely spoke because, apart from family, there was no-one to talk to in the vast snowy plains, glaciers and mountains. On my inaugural arrival in Olso in 1992, other than the passport officer, 800 theWAS firstR160 Norwegian I encountered was a short man with a backpack wearing traditional Norwegian dress, as if for a solitary and bracing mountain walk. He appeared to be waiting for someone. He struck up a friendly conversation with me and then showed me into a room while flashing his ID at me. He wanted me to unpack my backpack. I imagined – like in Nigeria – that this must be a scam and I told him to buzz off. But he really was an undercover cop and he really did want to see into my backpack.
He was also really quite pleased that he did not find any contraband. Unlike African governments, Norway’s government has used its new found riches wisely, honestly and sensibly. No corruption in this state, the cop did not ask ‘what can I do for him?’ and wished me good travels. Norway is egalitarian, no-one has a sense of entitlement, and the king is above reproach. Unless on a US or EU passport, one’s carefree back packing days are gone. The traveller’s every hour is managed by embassies, electronic surveillance (both commercial and state) and police 02 - 15 APRiL 2014 clearances. Even our friends are included in this surveillance of their visitors. Keyan G Tomaselli travels a lot; he pays for his travels by singing for his hotel rooms, and spending huge amounts of time and money on visa applications. Sometimes he just refuses invitations like when recently told that because he was to be in Finland for an hour more than in Germany on the same trip, he would need to go to Pretoria to get his fingerprints taken by the Finns – notwithstanding his good behaviour during his three previous visits to that country. Backpacking in Lesotho, anyone?

exUS was selected as the “The Company to Watch” in CAR Magazine’s prestigious 2014 annual car awards, a celebration of automotive excellence, which was held at the Campus in Fourways recently. According to CAR’s Editor, Steve Smith, “there’s a revolution happening at Lexus. It started with the GS, gained momentum with the IS and continues with the gorgeous RC F Coupe. We’re excited to see the next step in the Lexus reinvention.” Justin Ryan, General Manager of Lexus South Africa, is justifiably proud of this accolade: “To be acknowledged in this way is a great reward for Lexus. It reaffirms the qualities that have always been at the heart of our brand – luxury, refinement and technical innovation – but, more importantly, it shows just how successfully we’re evolving Lexus dynamically with each new model we introduce.” While there’s an obvious buzz around forthcoming models like
the RC and RC F Coupe (due in SA towards the end of the year), Lexus has not been resting on its laurels. The stalwart of the Lexus range the sportyyet-practical RX has come in for a spot 2014 rejuvenation. Rx 350 ex In 2012, the popular RX range received the new Lexus corporate identity and signature spindle grille. For 2014, the RX has been refreshed even further with a new Appearance Pack that is now standard on the RX 350 EX model. This pack comprises a re-designed bumper with larger air intakes to boost the muscularity of the front view. Other changes include new 19-inch alloys (as opposed to the 18-inch units on the outgoing model), as well as LED-type front fog lamps. For the RX 450h SE, the latest upgrade includes the LED interior lighting package as well as the adoption of the Integrated Sport Driving system which enables the driver to tune the Drive Mode Select to Eco, Normal or Sport settings.

NAUGHTY NORAH’S DAIMLER
I
T was the early-Fifties and the chill wind of post-war austerity blew through the land. Clothes rationing had ended only in 1949 and petrol rationing in 1950. Glamour was rationed, too. The war had stripped Britain of much of its wealth, and death duties imposed by the Labour government of Clement Attlee had battered the fortunes of the old rich. Into this grey and cowed world stepped the Dockers. Rarely have wealth and vulgarity combined in such an entertaining way. Sir Bernard was the straight man in the duo, a cigar-chomping industrialist, chairman of a string of companies, most notably Birmingham Small Arms (BSA), parent of royal car-maker
Daimler. He supplied the cash. Norah was the star. Tasteless excess and calculated
hunger for publicity. And of all the Docker excesses, none were greater than the five custom-
outrageousness were her stock in trade. Her indiscretions — she was at one time banned from Monaco and the French Riviera — delighted newspaper columnists happy to feed her insatiable
built Daimlers she persuaded her doting husband to build for her — not at his expense, but Daimler’s. The five ‘Docker Daimlers’ were exercises in pure extravagance. No animal was safe
as Norah scoured the earth for suitable seat coverings. Crocodile, lizard, zebra, mink even, were incorporated into the cars’ opulent and beautifully crafted cabins, more like drawing rooms than car interiors. The exteriors were hardly less lavish. The first of the fleet, commissioned in 1951, was christened the ‘Golden Daimler’ due to the gold plating used in the hundreds of stars dotting its bodywork. Now, one of those cars is back on sale. The Daimler Stardust, circa 1954, will shortly be auctioned at Goodwood and is expected to fetch £160,000. Not bad for a limousine that languished unloved on a Welsh farm for years before being restored to its former glory.

T was a perfect day at the Umhlanga Main Beach where Wave Wizards Umhlanga Surf Club held the first event of a three part series to celebrate thirty years as a club. Surfers and spectators enjoyed a beautiful sunny day with no wind. The waves were 1-2ft with the occasional 3-4ft set on the outside making for very contestable conditions. Over eighty surfers entered the contest ranging from age 5 to 55. Many surfers had their fathers also enter for the fun of having time at the beach together. Chris Knutson from Umhlanga won the Masters 45+ division followed by Paul Izzard (La Lucia) , Chris Baum (Salt Rock), Jeff Simkiss (Umdloti) and Andy Hogg (Umhlanga). Shane Sykes from Salt Rock was on top form winning the u18 boys division and coming second in the Open Men’s Division. Shane has showed incredible progress in his surfing in the last few years and is touted as one of South Africa’s greats in the future. Jaco Kapp from Ballito won the 35+ masters division followed by Ryan Butcher from Umhlanga, Quintin Jones of Ballito and Evan Jenkins from Durban North. The Open Men was won by Beyrick de Vries who is currently lying 25th on the World Surfing League. Second place went to Davey Van Zyl who is also sitting in the top 100 of the international rankings. Shane Sykes who is only 17 placed third and retired WSL campaigner and top surfer Dan Redman placed fourth. The girls’ novice division was very special to watch when tiny little surfers braved the tough waves in the Umhlanga bowl. The young girls had caddies helping to push them onto the waves and Lily de Goede triumphed with Ella Potterton placed second, Saxon Bird third, Samantha Southwood, fourth and Maya de Goede, fifth In the boys novice division young Jordan du Toit beat Taine Bird followed by Sergio Noguiera and Indie Van de Wall. All the novice surfers tried really hard proving that they are the kids to watch in the future of our surfing.
