KZN’S FAVOURITE READ
from the editor
I
was looking forward to seeing three of Britain’s most prominent television presenters at the Top Gear Festival in Durban on the weekend. James May, Richard Hammond and Jeremy Clarkson are household names in countries where their popular motoring series and other shows are broadcast and I was keen to see how they handled the live event at the Moses Mabhida Stadium. In hindsight, I should have stayed at home. The Top Gear Festival seems to appeal most to a local demographic with astonishingly bad taste and, as such, our British Trio didn’t disappoint. They were spectacularly underwhelming in their ill-fitting attire with their inane patter presumably dumbed down for the lowest common denominator. But the common denominator was either lower than they realised or they were too far up their own extremities to care – either way they failed to engage. There were moments…a few spectacular bike stunts…too few to rescue the show though and some exciting high performance driving…oh, and local Zeff Rapper Jack Parrow put in an interesting appearance in an attempt to lift the show but even then, it didn’t reach the mezzanine level. Had I been paying for the tickets, I would have asked for a refund – as it was, I was an invited member of the media, hence this glowing review of the show! In fairness, the action on the street circuit was apparently much more exciting and I am sorry to have missed it. As I will probably not be invited to the next Top Gear Festival, I won’t be able to confirm this. Moving on, I am interested to see how things have progressed at my old Alma Mater of broadcasting, the SABC. I have fond memories from my time as a television producer there and I enjoyed being a part of the Radio 5 team as well. Those were difficult times to be a broadcaster in South Africa. We were at war with the censors and the political appointees who tried their best to keep South Africans in the dark while we tried our best to shine some light, often at a fairly heavy price. I, like many of my colleagues, was considered a liberal loose cannon and targeted as a result, for some heavy handed treatment. When I left the broadcast arena, it was with mixed emotions. Looking at how executives at the SABC are being rewarded now, I am almost tempted to re-apply for my old job. Consider the joy of SABC acting chief operations officer Hlaudi

Motsoeneng who was given a lovely gift by traditional Venda Chiefs during a visit to their area recently but sadly for him, this has resulted in a complaint being lodged with the Commission for Gender Equality. ‘We will not be providing the details on the merits and the demerits of the case as this will prejudice the investigation currently under way,’ SABC spokesperson Javu Baloyi is quoted as saying in a report in The Citizen. The Sowetan reported on Friday that traditional Venda chiefs gave Motsoeneng a wife, a cow, and a calf during his visit to their area. About 10 women were lined up in Thohoyandou, Limpopo, last Wednesday for Motsoeneng to choose one. He and other SABC executives were in the area for a meeting with Mudzi wa Vhurereli ha Vhavenda, a lobby group of traditional leaders and healers. The woman Motsoeneng chose was pictured in the newspaper barebreasted next to him, standing behind the trailer on which the cow and calf had been loaded. She is 22-year-old human resources management student Vanessa Mutswari. He received the gifts because he was ‘committed to his job and understands the strategic objectives of the SABC’, according to the report. Is it possible that the strategic objectives referred to, are what the SABC has been doing to its viewers and listeners for years. Maybe, after their lacklustre performance on Sunday evening, the traditional chiefs will be lining up the cows, calves and bare-breasted

During each yearend all of these towns experience the annual migration to the beach by city dwellers hungry for the opportunity to enjoy what the beach and ocean have to offer. These migrants are looking for different destinations and different accommodation. Some prefer staying in complexes overlooking the ocean close to shops and entertainment, while others prefer a cottage at the beach far away from everyone and everything. Using information by Lightstone the following is a comparison of property values of different areas, especially the Western Cape and Kwa Zulu Natal’s Dolphin Coast. This analysis was done of properties within 500 meters from the beach. It was found that on average beachfront properties in the Western Cape is valued at R2 060 000.00 and 32% more expensive than beachfront properties in KZN which is on average valued at R 1 560 000.00. It is predicted that house price inflation is to remain stable for the rest of the year within the range of 5.6% and 7.85. However this Lightstone forecast can only remain if: •Interest rates are contained •Labour tensions do not further lower economic growth, and •Banks risk providing bonds do not increase further. TO DISCIPLINE OR NOT TO DISCIPLINE!
ASHTON ACCREDITED AS A SWIMMING SOUTH AFRICA PERFORMANCE CENTRE
Who is responsible? Joe Erasmus –
Executive Head, Ashton International College
I
am still of the old adage that discipline starts at home and I am sure the majority of parents would agree. Although times have changed, basic morals and values will always remain the core of good parenting. As I have mentioned previously, our H.S.C.C system now in its second year, has been refined and amended and plays an integral part in providing structure in our rapidly growing school. Heart, Spirit, Character and Courage encompasses a philosophy of valuedriven rules and not just school rules. We encourage our students to behave in a certain manner, not because of the rules themselves, but rather as an extension of their own character. Why? It is the right thing to do. It would be safe to say that Codes of Conduct or Rules & Regulations are established to protect the very essence of that institution for the majority of people. It is essential to point out that these Codes of Conduct or Rules and Regulations do not belong to a specific person or group of people, but rather to the institution itself. Part of parenting and education is teaching our children to discern and define what is right and what is wrong and certainly the LifeAndStyle-advert-PRINT.pdf 1 2014/05/12
consequences that follow their actions. In today’s society our children are being constantly challenged, and their morals and values are continuously being compromised. There is no correct manual for parenting, as each child in their own right is unique and different. What is critical is that we are there to support, guide and motivate our children to make the right decisions. We encourage positive behaviour and at the same time, we reward them for their efforts. For any system to work, it will always require a combined effort of support. As is always the case, there will be a small minority who will buck the system and refuse to see the bigger picture, and as such we will always be challenged. It is imperative to state that at our school, we do not want to produce a bunch of soldiers who react to commands, but rather we aim to encourage our students to become accountable and responsible young ladies and gentleman, due to the quality of their character. Our H.S.C.C. at Ashton, is based on value-driven rules & regulations with the emphasis on being positive and teaching our children life skills to build solid citizens who will make a positive contribution to society. I come back to my original question… Who is responsible? 12:04 PM

t a media launch held by Swimming South Africa in Sandton on Thursday 12 June 2014, Ashton International College, has been accredited as a Swimming South Africa Performance Centre in accordance with the provisions of the SSA performance school criteria. The certificate was presented to Executive Head of Ashton, Mr Joe Erasmus and Head Coach, Garry Jackson. Ashton Swimming Academy (SAILS) is affiliated to KZN Aquatics and has shown amazing growth in a short period of eight months. At the Nationals earlier this year, seven swimmers clinched a total of 26 medals, and with final statistics Ashton Swimming Academy finished an amazing 16th out of 36 clubs at National Level 1 Championships held in Bloemfontein.
At the Inter-house galas, Ashton Swimming Academy swimmers claimed 50 top three podium positions out of a total of 60 events, setting 12 new records in the Junior College, while the Academy swimmers accounted for 39 top three positions from 36 events, and recorded 11 new records. “We are very excited about this accreditation, and we were very honoured to have received the certificate from the President of Swimming South Africa, Jace Naidoo. We believe that this accreditation will go a long way in not only firmly establishing Ashton as one of the top Co-ed swimming schools, but that the Academy will grow and become a force to be reckoned with on all levels of competition," said Mr J Erasmus, Executive Head of Ashton International College.

Common Myths on
Interior Design Dale Dennis (B-Tech Interior design TUT)
Interior design myth #5
I can get free designer advice in a salon or shop..
Y
es definitely getting advice on interior design in a furniture shop could work for you, One thing to remember is that the advice being given to you (for free) for example in a furniture or fabric shop is limited as the person giving the advice is generally trying to make a sale. This person will very seldom give you advice on your space as a part of a whole, and provide the attention to detail that is necessary. Without conducting a site visit, or at least an hour’s consultation, how could that person really know what it is that you as a client needs and wants? Having your home look like a singular furniture or fabric house’s showroom is not ideal, and this is generally the look you will achieve if you are getting advice from the sales person/”designer” that is at the end of the day just trying to make a sale. I am sure that the designer who is based in this shop is not going to tell you that the chair in the competition’s showroom next door is going to be a better design option...when in fact it just might be. As mentioned over and over before, the job of an interior
GENERAL iNTEREST
everybody's reading
designer is to ensure functionality of any given area, combined with aesthetic appeal. A true designer will always make sure their client is happy and safe, and if it means purchasing from over a 100 suppliers to achieve this, that is what an independent interior designer would and should do. At the end of the day one has to remember that nothing is for free, it is up to us as an educated public to decide where we would like to spend our money. Paying a professional designer for a few hours to put together a scheme, which you have briefed them on, and letting them do all the leg work and weeding out the items that you don’t want, will more than likely save you many, many hours, and time is money. You will also have one point of contact for your entire interior, and also have the advantage of your home being unique, and not looking like a furniture showroom (unless of course you would like it to). Not all interior advice given in a shop is bad; please just bear in mind where the advice is coming from.

Rigby Wants Your Vote on 2nd July
T
here is an important by-election taking place in Ward 22 of the KwaDukuza Municipal region on July 2nd.
Why should you care? Well, if you live in the greater Ballito region in the vicinity of Salt Rock, Tinley Manor, Shakaskraal and a few other interesting areas that fall under the auspices of Ward 22, this is your chance to influence what happens in your world and your community for the next few years, at least as far as local government is concerned. Ward 22 has traditionally been DA led under Councillor Anne McDonnell who has been redeployed, creating a vacancy for a new broom, so to speak, to sweep fresh energy into the local political landscape. This begs the question, do you want the current status quo to continue or are you looking for a new deal? Inspired by the legacy of Nelson Mandela, the African National Congress (ANC) has fielded an interesting candidate to bring a new political deal to the table
in this region.
“During my lifetime I have dedicated myself to this struggle of the African people. I have fought against white domination, and I have fought against black domination. I have cherished the ideal of a democratic and free society in which all persons live together in harmony with equal opportunities. It is an ideal which I hope to live for and to see realised. But if needs be, it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die.” Nelson Mandela 1918 - 2013 It’s no secret that the ANC would love to win Ward 22 and, as such, they have selected a man who they believe has what it takes to do just that. Rigby Heenan is no stranger to politics on the North Coast. A former top cop and station commander in his younger days, he’s now a respected leader in the agricultural sector, serving on several corporate boards and completely at ease among people of all persuasions. He is happily married to Linda who he adores and they have a son Ryan and daughters Luann and Samantha. His family is his greatest love and inspiration and he is determined to make this region a better place for all to share in peace and prosperity. Education and
Linda & Rigby Heenan
job creation is high on his agenda, as is health care and security – and although the position of ward councillor is supposedly part-time, he is prepared to give it his full time commitment to see things through to their successful conclusion. His track record as a negotiator and peace broker among warring factions in our recent history is a matter of record and he is widely acknowledged as a man of his word who gets things done. He has a love for the region and its people – this is his home and he is prepared to do what it takes to create a better deal here for all who share it with him. With fifteen years of solid political experience in the field, Rigby Heenan is no starry eyed newcomer with romantic political aspirations. He knows how to navigate through the sometimes complex socio political landscape to get things done and because the political arena is changing, he has chosen to join the ANC because he believes that more can be achieved from inside the ruling party than by standing on the outside and complaining. To get the best deal for his constituents, he believes that the ruling party has extended a hand to those who are prepared to put their trust in his ability to deliver with them on the promise of a more effective local administration. Strong leadership is key to unlocking the resources needed to stimulate continued economic growth and prosperity on the North Coast and many believe that he has what it takes to make it happen here. He plans to use his solid background and experience in the policing and
security sectors to ensure that the local Community Policing Forums and Neighbourhood Watch organisations in Ward 22 are strongly resourced and supported to ensure vastly improved security in the region. An effective opposition is an important mechanism in ensuring balance and transparency in government, but there is no denying that one can achieve more with better resources and bigger infrastructure and this is in effect what Rigby is now able to bring to the table as an ANC candidate for those who are ready for a new dispensation – those who want to see better service delivery and more action from local government in areas where it has been sorely needed.
On Thursday 26th June at 6pm you are invited to a gathering at the Litchi Orchard in Salt Rock where Rigby and his team will be on hand to share with you their vision for Ward 22. This won’t be a boring political rally, but rather an informal get together with some interesting people to plot the way forward. There’ll be free pizza and live entertainment by Pierre de Charmoy and one or two surprise guests popping in to add to the excitement. It should be a fun event and if you are invited to be there because together, we can create a better future here for all to share. For more information contact Linda - 082 4373232 or Sli - 071 2111456
Note: The Ward 22 by-election takes place on Wednesday 2nd July. To be eligible to vote you must be on the national voter’s roll and resident in Ward 22 KwaDukuza. No photographs of candidates will appear on the voting forms, just the logos of the competing political parties. It is important to note that a vote for the ANC is a vote for Rigby Heenan and for rapid progress and development in this region that has been dominated by political lethargy for so long.

He and his fiancé, Leeza run the Nature’s Gate stall at the Foodies Market and they have big plans for the future as more and more people discover how good their herbs, vegetables, fruit and eggs really are. Healthy free-range chickens produce top quality eggs and because only organic sprays are used to keep plants healthy, many of which are made up on the farm by Ray, you know that what you are buying is contaminant free and packed with goodness. Ray attributes much of the success of their venture to Khetiwe Mthembu, who has a natural gift for raising herbs and vegetables and who works closely with them to produce the bounty that supplies their ever increasing network of customers. It’s a winning combination and as the demand for healthy organic produce is on the increase, the future seems very bright for the Nature’s Gate team.

freshly chopped parsley 15ml (1 tablespoon) dried oregano Topping: 80g (1/3 cup) butter 80ml (1/3 cup) flour 500ml (2 cups) milk Salt and freshly grated black pepper to taste 250g ricotta cheese 150g feta cheese, crumbled 3 extra-large eggs, lightly beaten 125ml (½ Cup) dried breadcrumbs 3 – 4 Bay leaves
Method: Preheat oven to 180C. Cut bring brinjals into 5mm slices, sprinkle liberally with salt and set aside for the moisture to drain. Heat 62ml (¼ cup) olive oil in a deep large saucepan. Sauté the onions and garlic until soft. Add mince and lightly cook until no longer pink. Add all the spices, season well. Stir in the wine, tomato, tomato paste and herbs. Bring to the boil, reduce heat and simmer uncovered for 15 to 20 minutes or until the sauce has thickened sufficiently. Set aside. Rinse the Brinjals under cold running water and thoroughly pat dry. Heat the remaining oil in a large heavy bottomed frying pan. Shallow fry the Brinjals in batches until golden Brown. Drain on absorbent paper kitchen towel. Set aside. Alternatively, lightly toss the brinjal slices in olive oil and put the whole lot in an oven roasting tray. Place under hot grill for 15 minutes or until golden brown, turning once during the cooking time. Prepare the béchamel sauce by melting the butter in a medium sized saucepan. Add the flour at once, stirring for two minutes until a thick paste has formed and the mixture comes away from the sides of the saucepan. Immediately remove from the heat and whisk in the milk, return to the heat and continue whisking until the sauce is thick and glossy. Season well to taste. Remove from heat and leave to cool slightly before stirring in the remaining ingredients. Beat until smooth to break up any of the cheese pieces, if the mixture still looks too lumpy, put it through the blender for a few minutes. Mixture should be thick and smooth. To Assemble: Sprinkle a liberal handful of breadcrumbs in the bottom of a well-greased 20cm x 30cm oven proof dish, Arrange a layer of brinjals neatly on top of the breadcrumbs. Top with a liberal amount of mince followed by a sprinkling of breadcrumbs and a second layer of Brinjals. Repeat the process until you have used up all the brinjal and mince. Spoon the béchamel sauce over the final layer. Randomly stick the Bay leaves into the topping so that they stand up in the sauce. Bake at 180°C for 45 to 60 minutes or until the top is bubbling hot and golden Brown.

Eat Lots of Hot Curries: Scientists Say
Pain-Blocking Ability of Chillis Boosts Lifespan

the journal Cell reports. University of California researcher Andrew Dillin said: ‘We think that blocking this pain receptor and pathway could be very, very useful not only for relieving pain, but for improving lifespan and metabolic health and in particular for treating diabetes and obesity in humans. ‘As humans age, they report a higher incidence of pain, suggesting that pain might drive the ageing process.’ The animals in his experiment had been genetically-engineered to not make the TRPV1 pain sensor. But Professor Dillin said that regularly eating capsaicin, the compound that gives chilli peppers their zing, should stop the sensor from working. He said: ‘Chronic ingestion of compounds that affect TRPV1 such as capsaicin might help prevent metabolic decline with age and lead to increased longevity in humans.’

curry or stir fry for dinner won’t just spice up your evening – it might also help you live longer. Scientists say that blocking the body’s ability to feel pain boosts lifespan - and that one way of switching off pain is by regularly eating chilli peppers. The culinary advice follows experiments in mice, in which stopping pain signals from reaching the brain extended their lifespan. Animals that could not make pain-sensing protein called TRPV1 were ‘exceptionally long lived’. Not only was life 14 per cent longer, but it was also healthier. They developed cancer less often and their memory faded less with age. They seemed to be able to burn off calories without exercising more than usual and their metabolism, including their ability to process sugar remained youthful late in life. This could cut the risk of diabetes,

Success is…
To laugh often and much; To win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children; To earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; To appreciate beauty, to find the best in others; To leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch, or a redeemed social condition; To know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded. — Ralph Waldo Emerson

Small Business Coach – www.kissyourbusiness.com
here are so many business related things one can do to increase the reasons why a client remains loyal, but where to start I hear you exclaim… Well, one place would be to move from projects to a professional practice. Some business owners think about their work as a series of projects or jobs (e.g. “I am a developer working on two projects right now, and bidding for three others”). I believe that you should start to think of your work as a professional practice. A business owner with a professional practice has great skill, considerable training, and works repeatedly to perfect their expertise. He or she educates others while improving their own skills. I would much rather hire somebody who thinks about work as a professional practice than hire somebody that does projects. A professional practice is about mastery and excellence. It is about results, service, skill, and continuous improvement. If you have a professional practice, your clients stay with you for years and years, if not a lifetime. They keep coming back. People trust you with their most personal problems, and rave about your service to their friends. By comparison, someone who does projects (or gigs) comes across as much more task focused. Vendors do projects these people have to compete
against others, often on price. When a project finishes, they have to find new projects. Because they focus on projects instead of on clients, they don’t develop many long-term relationships. In fact, customers might not trust them, because they see them as vendors. The choice is up to you. You can be a vendor who does onetime projects, or you can set yourself apart as a professional with a practice. You are probably saying to yourself, “This is nothing but semantics,” but it is much more than that. If you choose to treat your work as a professional practice that delivers outstanding results to your clients, good things will happen for you:
and call you first when they have a need. • Clients keep coming back for more work, and send other clients your way. • You get referrals without even asking, because people rave about you to others. • Clients trust you enough to share their top concerns with you, and work with you to develop solutions before inviting competitors in to bid. You can charge higher fees. Article by: Sean Dercksen – for all past articles go to www. seandercksen.co.za or www. kissyourbusiness.com
• Your business development efforts focus on building trust and relationships, and attracting long-term clients, instead of on hawking your services or bidding on price. • Your marketing efforts focus on attracting clients through referrals and with information that establishes your credibility, instead of “push strategy” sales techniques. • You can bid on fewer competitive projects, because clients will start coming to you. • People look forward to the education and information you provide, perceive you to be an expert,

ou can get fitter in just 4 minutes than you can by doing a whole hour of exercise! How? It's called Tabata Intervals and no, this is not an infomercial and I am not selling you the latest piece of exercise equipment. Burn calories! Not time! Tabata Intervals, a type of high intensity interval training, has been scientifically proven to burn more calories in 4 minutes than an hour of steady state cardio. Tabata Intervals where made famous by Professor Izumi Tabata, one of the world’s leading sports scientist. Prof Tabata has proven that a 20 second all-out effort followed by 10 seconds of rest repeated just 8 times, is far more effective than any other workout. Tabatas vs fat burning zone training? Tabatas win hands down. Actually, anything wins hands down vs fat burning zone training! It's almost like still believing in a high carb low fat diet! Tabata intervals keep burning calories up to 12 hours after you have stopped training while fat burning zone training stops when

you stop. Professor Tabata took two groups and put them on an exercise program for six weeks. The control group did one hour of moderate-intensity exercise five times a week. The other group did the high-intensity Tabata-style training. That adds up to 1,800 minutes of training for the control group versus 120 minutes of training for the Tabata group over the six-week period. The results speak for themselves. The Tabata group improved both its aerobic and anaerobic fitness levels. The anaerobic fitness level increased 28%. When I was doing my scientific research aka googling, I found lots of blogs and blurbs about Tabata's, over 200 000! My opinion, best to hear it from the horse’s mouth! Follow this link! http://www.ritsumei.ac.jp/eng/ html/research/areas/feat-researchers/ interview/izumi_t.html/ What is my personal Tabata experience? It's hard! Really! Swallow a few cement pills to harden up before you do this. Actually, check with your healthcare practitioner, make sure your will is in order and take extra life insurance too. This is not for princesses! Your heart will be thumping in your brain. If it doesn't, find out what rule 5 is and up the intensity next time. It is extremely rewarding. Not just physically, but mentally too. I always feel amazing after a Tabata workout. It works! You'll feel stronger and leaner guaranteed! I also found it a great way to introduce my clients to working at a higher intensity and to make workouts less boring, especially cardio. It's manageable. Unlike other HIIT protocols, it's easier to motivate yourself to do and to complete the workout. Just as you feel like you can't keep up the intensity, you get to rest for 10 seconds. You are not limited to one routine. You can swim, run, cycle, row, squat, lunge, swing a kettle bell - whatever you can imagine, as long as it's an allout effort. Give it a try and let me know what you think! You can send your life changing thank you notes to me at johan@dorfling.com Johan - 072 340 1213

t’s common in
anecdotal folk law that no matter how many times a husband tells his wife she looks lovely in a particular dress she will still question it; but let a stranger complement her and she takes it on board and believes it. Couples go to parties and find new people so much more interesting than their long term partner; they seem to forget the qualities that drew them together in the first place and only notice, with increasing hyper-vigilance, the little niggley things that irk and rankle. In many long term relationships the routine, instead of being seen as a comfort, becomes mind-numbing and those that share the routine are treated to the contempt that familiarity brings. Subtle signals, both conscious and subconscious, are picked up by both sides and slights, both real and imagined, are traded as opening salvoes in a sniping war. This results in massive undervaluing of partners and corresponding strain on the mammalian bonding function which is central to the sense of belonging which strong bond pairs experience. It only takes a flight of imagination to begin to reverse this downhill slide…. Imagine, for a moment, that
something happened to your other half; some catastrophe that meant you would never be able to see them again. What would you remember of them..? The niggles..? Or would you start to think of all of the qualities that you missed? Life whether simple or complex is precious; it only ceases to be so when we lack the imagination to see beyond the humdrum, the mundane, and the myriad ways the background radiation of minutiae make our life complete: you switch the kettle on – it boils, you turn a tap – water emerges, you press buttons on a phone -and someone half a world away is connected. You turn over in bed and say “Good Morning”and there is an answer. Be Happy. Namaste Rod Briggs is an International Lecturer in the Mind Sciences. THE UNDENIABLE BENEFITS OF CORE STRENGTH Marcelle Bendixen Pilates by Design

equate core strength with a flat belly or six-pack abs. And while those may be motivating goals to you, there are so many more benefits that come from improving core strength than how your midsection looks, including improved posture, better balance, reduced back pain and easier breathing. Where is your core, exactly? If you pointed to somewhere around your navel, you’re partially right. Many people think the core consists only of the abdominals, but the core also includes your pelvic muscles, mid and lower back muscles, and even your hip muscles. All of these muscles work together to support your spine and skull.

•Better Athletic Performance: You’d be
hard-pressed to find a sport that doesn’t rely on core strength for performance. For example, core exercises can keep runners’ legs and arms from tiring quickly. Rowers engage their cores as they paddle; a stronger core allows them to pull harder and faster. Cyclists get the power for their hill climbs as much from their cores as they do their legs—maybe more. Your core is the link between your upper and lower body, it is what allows a golfer to swing the club to strike his ball, or a tennis player to serve and optimize her racquet speed. It’s critical to sports performance. •Improved Balance: Poor balance is a complicated condition, but lower body weakness, vestibular dysfunction and neurological deficits are often

Not only do you have better control of your muscles, but you can more easily find your center if you’re caught off-balance. In addition, being able to rely on a strong core will make it less likely that you’ll overtax other muscles.
Think of your core as a muscular corset that stabilizes your entire body, helping to give you a center of gravity whether you’re at rest or moving your limbs: Just as a ballerina uses her center of gravity to keep her balance as she spins across the floor, you draw upon your core strength whenever you walk, sit, exercise or perform pretty much any activity. The Dolphins are
Waiting…
Dave Charles
Y
ou’ve got to rise early to swim with the dolphins in Mozambique. The lecture at Dolphin Center HQ in the quirky coastal village of Ponta do Ouro starts at 6am sharp. Here you are given a quick rundown on the dos and don’ts of Dolphin contact in the open ocean where anything can happen and, if you don’t feel a little apprehensive at the prospect of hopping over the edge of a rubber duck into the deep sea, you are probably not normal. What’s even more disconcerting is that you will be dropping in on the domain of the ocean’s apex predators armed with nothing but a mask, snorkel and fins… and you will be happy! But before you get there you have got to launch the semi-rigid inflatable through the surf. Luckily this is nothing like the pounding rollers of the KZN North Coast. Ponta do Oura
rests on the edge of a sheltered bay just a few hours further north where the people are friendlier and surf is relatively easy to navigate – luckily – and then you are off on an encounter that you will never forget! Angie Gullen, is the dolphin queen of Ponto do Ouro and she and her team have an affinity with the resident dolphins in these waters so
your chances of a close up and personal experience with them are excellent. They come to her in the deep ocean to catch up on the latest gossip and to share a puffer fish in a game of tag. Hey, I saw that happen – I was there! And although we were in the water for about 45 minutes, none of us could believe it – the nature of time seems to change when dolphins and humans interact. Why did I feel so emotional? And why did we all experience similar feelings? What are they trying to tell us? For the past two decades she has been spreading the dolphin gospel to all who will listen. She believes that there is a hunger from humanity to interact with dolphins in their natural environment and that these encounters can have profound effects
on people. But she warns that these contacts can have detrimental effects on the dolphins. So they advocate a code of conduct that they call ethical marine mammal tourism to lessen the impact of human encounters on these curiously intelligent creatures. Dolphins are so intelligent they should be given the same status
as humans – that’s what scientists are saying having done extensive research to prove conclusively that they are the world's second brightest creatures after humans - leapfrogging chimpanzees that come a poor third (although there are some humans that one has to wonder about). Experts say it is now time for dolphins to be treated as 'non-human persons' after research showed their brains have
many features associated with high intelligence. They claim it is intolerably cruel to keep such intelligent animals in amusement parks, or to kill them for food or by accident when fishing or in shark nets. Some 300,000 whales, dolphins and porpoises die in this way every year. A study carried out by Lori Marino, a zoologist at Emory University in Atlanta, used MRI scans to map the brains of dolphin species and compare them to primates. She said: 'Many dolphin brains are larger than our own and second in mass only to the human brain when corrected for body size. 'The neuroanatomy suggests psychological continuity between humans and dolphins and has profound implications for the ethics of humandolphin interactions.'
Professor Marino found that the cerebral cortex and the neocortex of bottlenose dolphins were so large that 'the anatomical ratios that assess cognitive capacity place it second only to the human brain'. The brain cortex also has the same complicated folds associated with human intelligence. Dolphins have long been known for their intelligence. However it had been believed that chimps that can attain the intelligence levels of three-year- old children - were the brighter of the two. New studies imply that in fact dolphins - especially species such as the bottlenose - are the more intelligent. They have distinct personalities, a strong sense of the self and can think about the future. They are also 'cultural' animals, with new types of behaviour being picked up by one dolphin from
another. In one piece of research, bottlenose dolphins were shown to be able to recognise themselves in a mirror and use it to inspect various parts of their bodies. All the evidence suggests that dolphins are in fact "non-human persons" who qualify for moral understanding as individuals. Over the years Angie and her team has facilitated many extraordinary dolphin swim programs with children & adults alike. A keen sense to experience dolphins in their own environment together with a spirit of adventure is all that is needed - they will do the rest. To swim with dolphins we recommend a visit to the Dolphin Center, Village Square, Ponta do Ouro, Mozambique. It’s an inexpensive holiday and huge fun! arley-Davidson is known for its big touring bikes and iconic brand. But now the Wisconsin-based company is aiming to break new ground in a bold new move when it takes its first electric motorcycle, Project LiveWire, on a tour of the country beginning at an event in New York this week. And President Matt Levatich said he expects the company to become a leader in developing technology and standards for electric vehicles. The announcement is seen as taking the company in an entirely new direction - they have not previously showed interest in electric bikes, instead preferring to develop the iconic
But one analyst said investment by a major manufacturer could help create demand, and Levatich emphasized in an interview with The Associated Press that Harley is interested in the long-term potential, regardless of immediate demand. 'We think that the trends in both EV [Electric Vehicle] technology and customer openness to EV products, both automotive and motorcycles, is only going to increase, and when you think about sustainability and environmental trends, we just see that being an increasing part of the lifestyle and the requirements of riders,' Levatich said. 'So, nobody can predict right now
vehicle that has been a mainstay of American culture for nearly a century. The company will take the bike down the U.S. Route 66 to 30 HarleyDavidson dealerships to give riders the chance to test drive the bike and provide feedback. Harley will use the information it gathers to refine the bike, which might not hit the market for several more years. Some see the venture as a risk for Harley because there's currently almost no market for full-size electric motorcycles. The millions of two-wheeled electric vehicles sold each year are almost exclusively scooters and lowpowered bikes that appeal to Chinese commuters. In addition the company has little experience in such an emerging technology.
how big that industry will be or how significant it will be.' At the same time, Levatich and others involved in creating the bike predicted it would sell based on performance, not environmental awareness. With no need to shift gears, the bike can go from 0 to 100 kilometres per hour in about four seconds. The engine is silent, but the meshing of gears apparently emits a hum like a jet airplane taking off. 'Some people may get on it thinking, "golf cart,"' lead engineer Jeff Richlen said. 'And they get off thinking, "rocket ship."' One hurdle the company has yet to address is the limited range offered by electric motorcycles. The batteries must be recharged after about 210 kilometres, and that can take 30 minutes to an hour.
