4.3.1_UNDERSTANDING MOVEMENT IN THE SYSTEM

At this point, a particular type of unit that could aggregate radially was developed. The unit was tested at full-scale and in several variations in order to analyze how the units moved and responded to forces. Each type of movement was documented in an attempt to understand how each type may affect the entire aggregate structure. The single unit is composed of four strips of 1/8” Birch Plywood 11/16” W x 60” L attached on center to a 3/4” x 3/4” x 4” Block. Each strip is placed directly across from each other based on the faces from the center block. The majority of the bending between units occurs across the length of the strip, however connections to strips occur on the endpoints. Here the strips twist out of single curvature to create a connection. This twist begins to introduce strength and torsion into the system that affects the way the system behaves.
