Investing in Family Investing in Community

You rarely get a day off when you run your own business, especially a family business. In the spring, our busiest season of the year, I can usually be found seven days a week in the annual greenhouse or the store. The thing is, this is not a reflection of the performance of our many fantastic employees that also work incredibly hard helping Paula and I run the Garden Center, the Landscape Design & Construction business, the Exterior Furnishings Studio, or our newest storefront of Bucks County Hardscape & Building Supply. This is instead a reflection of the fact that not a single day goes by when I am not thinking about the well-being of my family business.

Sometimes people forget that we are still a small family business. I hope to remind you that when you choose to shop at locally owned businesses such as ours, instead of the big box competitors, the dollars you spend stay in the community and benefit your neighbors and families.

Last spring, we visited some of the plant departments at those big box stores. What we found were inferior quality plants that were often only pennies less than the bigger, healthier plants that could be purchased at Gasper Garden Center. I know that everyone is after a bargain, but those plants were no bargain! (For more on big box comparisons, see page 12.)

This year, we have been blessed with the completion of a new home for our Landscape Design & Construction offices and operations and the new hardscape store. It is the culmination of years of dreaming, saving, planning, and hard work to bring it to fruition. As I see it, Paula and I are planting the seeds for future generations and contributing to the health and well-being of our community. We invite you to grow with us.

Vegetable Growing Tips

Light: Full Sun — most veggies like at least eight hours of direct sun per day.

Soil: Healthy, rich soil is the key to a successful and productive vegetable garden. A soil test will give you an idea of your soil fertility and pH. You can add soil amendments and fertilizers to your soil until it is up to par.

Plants: If it is your first garden, it is usually best to pick four or five types of vegetables and grow them well, rather than to try to cram everything into a small space. However, if you start with spring lettuce then you can sow another crop (such as summer beans) in its place following harvest.

Water, Weed, and Feed: Newly seeded beds will need frequent watering, but more established crops can get by on one to two inches of water per week. To conserve water and reduce the need to irrigate, mulch your soil with several inches of straw or shredded leaves. Side benefit: the mulch will also suppress weeds.

As for feeding, quick growing crops like radishes and lettuce won’t need supplemental fertilizers if grown in fertile soil. Long-term veggies like tomatoes, winter squash, and eggplants, however, will appreciate a boost several times over the growing season. Give them an occasional dose of a water-soluble organic food to support growth and encourage the biggest harvest.

Organic gardening is a gardening style that is much more in tune with the natural environment, working in conjunction with more natural ways to fertilize, reduce weeds, and to minimize insect damage to plants, without the use of chemical or synthetic fertilizers, pesticides or herbicides. While gardening with organic techniques and products is a good practice for your entire yard, it is particularly important when growing food that you intend to eat. Organic gardening often has the reputation of being extremely labor intensive. Reduce Weeds Naturally

with organic weed prevention

Weeds are the bane of every gardener but there are many organic weed control product options that can help you win the battle. Start off by reducing the number of weeds by stopping weed seeds before they even start to grow with an all-natural pre-emergent such as Espoma’s Organic Weed Preventer made from corn gluten, which is also a great gentle fertilizer. Corn gluten based products can be used in planting beds and on lawns.

Already have weeds you are looking to kill? Try spot treating them with one of our many spray herbicides, such as Captain Jack’s Lawnweed Brew, Bonide’s Burn Out or Dr. Earth’s Final Stop Weed & Grass Killer. For larger areas, try Harris’s Sea Salt Plus Vinegar Weed & Grass Killer or their high concentrate vinegars.

Don’t Let Them Bug You with organic insect controls

It is important that any pest controls, whether organic or not, are used judicially and to address specific issues as to not harm the many beneficial insect species that are helpful to your plants and garden like bees, pollinators and other species that help naturally control pest species, like ladybugs and parasitic wasps.

To control Japanese Beetles and their grubs try St. Gabriel’s Organic Milky Spore Powder or Safer Brand Japanese Beetle Traps.

To control mosquitos try Bonide’s Mosquito Beater Area Repellent.

To control leaf-eating worms and caterpillars try Bonide’s Thuricide (BT)

Feed Your Palms

Tropical plants in the Northeast need to be fertilized during summer. Use Dr. Earth Palm, Tropical and Hibiscus Fertilizer once a month from April to August to keep them healthy.

Peonies Here are the three common types of peonies Gasper carries. Available in Late April.

Tree Peonies

Enormous flowers on sturdy stems and great foliage. A woody shrub that can be up to 4 feet in height and width. Blooms April-May.

Herbaceous Peonies

Produces large multi-petaled flowers in May and June that must often be staked or supported with a peony cage. Stems die back to the ground each fall.

Itoh Peonies The Itoh Peonies are a hybrid between tree and common peonies, resulting in a peony with large flowers on sturdy stems that don’t require staking. They are shorter than tree and herbaceous peonies and die back to the ground for winter. Blooms in June.

Dream Yard Creating Your

Transforming their back yard from a self-described “mud pit” to a space where they could truly enjoy spending quality time outdoors with each other.

Our empty nesters, Kathy and Dan H., faced a choice: move to a 55+ Retirement Community like all their friends were doing or make the house their grown kids called home, their dream home. After tackling the interior projects like a larger rec room, garage, and kitchen, they turned to Gasper to help them transform their back yard from a self-described “mud pit” to a space where they could truly enjoy spending quality time outdoors with each other.

One of the most important challenges to the redesign of the existing yard was effectively managing the stormwater drainage. Previously the entire rear yard sloped towards the back of the house creating a lot of mud at the main back door every time it rained. This meant that everyone, including the family dog, constantly tracked mud into the house.

Gasper solved this issue by building a small decorative block retaining wall to raise the grade at the back of the patio and instead direct all the stormwater into a channel or swale and away from the back of the house.

The retaining wall is not only functional, but it also acts as a beautiful seat wall that defines the edge of the patio and provides extra seating for when they entertain.

The new curvilinear shaped paver patio was enlarged to create three different areas for use: one for conversation and seating, one for a new hot tub and another for dining and outdoor grilling. The Gasper designers took care to design around existing mature trees which makes the patio feel like it has always been there. The resulting patio is an “adult yard” that Kathy and Dan use almost every night to unwind after the day and reconnect with each other.
