Making a Splash

I was pleased to be asked to write the introduction to our first-ever Poolside Inspiration Edition. As a Gasper Sales Designer, I have the privilege of meeting many homeowners who require assistance with their pool projects. Whether they are seeking a design for a new pool, the renovation around an existing pool, or even the expansion or addition of a patio space around an existing pool patio, the process of pool design entails a lot of considerations. This includes deciding whether to locate it near the house or farther away in the yard. Also figuring out how to comply with pool fencing requirements in order to keep children safe around the pool, and whether you want to build accessory structures such as a pool house, pavilion, or outdoor kitchen. Fortunately, myself and the team of Gasper landscape designers have a wealth of experience that we utilize to help homeowners navigate the intricacies of pool design and pool codes. This results in the creation of wonderful pool-related outdoor spaces that you will see throughout this issue.

At Gasper, we specialize in landscape design and offer a range of services. Although we don’t construct pools, we have created a poolside inspiration edition to illustrate how we can help you design the perfect pool area. Our experienced team supports a holistic approach to your outdoor space and considers the big picture. In other words, we look at the entire property and create an outdoor living experience that complements you and your lifestyle.

We often find ourselves being called after the fact to do work on previously constructed pools. These pools are often set too high or have poorly placed pool equipment. These issues are usually the result of the pool contractor making decisions that do not consider the homeowner’s overall plan for their yard.

To avoid these design problems, we suggest calling Gasper first. Our team will work with you to create a comprehensive plan for your entire outdoor space. Once the design is complete, we can then bring in a pool contractor of your choice to build or renovate the pool. This approach ensures that your pool is not only beautiful but also functional, complementing the rest of your outdoor living space.

To be completely honest, building a pool for my family is also on my personal wish list (I even have a design in the works). My wife Kelly and I have a dream of creating a fun place in our backyard where we can spend time with our children, family, and friends. Although we enjoy traveling to the shore on weekends, there is something appealing about having our own beautiful space to relax after a hard week at work. We envision spending time by the pool with a cocktail and watching our kids swim and play in the water. I don’t think I’m alone with my dream. So enjoy the inspiration within this issue and consider Gasper first when you are ready to pull the trigger on your own pool project.

Designing the Details

A When is a retaining wall, not just a retaining wall? When it is a waterfall wall! Not only is its stone design functional, holding back the grade, but it is also beautiful and fills the pool area with the delightful sound of falling water.

B This sun shelf or splash pool is perfect for sunbathers who want to be partially submerged and partially dry. It also serves as a great play space for kids and dogs.

C Relax in the spa or dine immersed on all sides by water and greenery! Water flows down a stepped stone wall, behind the bluestone dining platform, and then into the pool via three sheer descents water features

D This swim-out bench is bordered by concrete paver bullnose coping and a 6"×6" paver border that provides a nice color contrast against the creamcolored travertine. Swim-out benches serve both as a safety feature, enabling guests (especially pets and small children) to have another way out in the deep end, and as a comfortable spot to relax and spend time.

E Don’t forget to include outdoor lighting in your pool and patio areas, as you and your guests are likely to spend time in these spaces well into the evening. Additionally, a masonry fireplace built by Gasper can enhance the ambiance of your backyard with the warm glow of fire light.

Designing the Details

A The olive jar fountain, placed artfully between the two flanking pool house wings and pergolas, creates a dramatic focal point. The pool itself is designed with all the bells and whistles, including a mosaic glass-tiled sun shelf and a swim-up table with benches and a built-in umbrella. The raised oversized coping, with the lawn right up to the edge, adds to the overall drama and formality of the pool.

B Featured on our cover (and last issue’s featured project), the water jets located just below this pool's coping create a graceful arc of water that falls into the pool, transforming it into a beautiful fountain or sculpture.

C When you are not swimming in the pool, there is ample space in the Gasper-built pool house to relax with your guests and enjoy the bar-top seating. You can watch the game on the outdoor TV while sipping cold beverages from the Lynx professionalgrade outdoor refrigerator. The pool house has both a bathroom and storage area, which makes it especially practical.

D This classic pergola creates an outdoor room at the end of this rectangular pool. The light shade pattern it casts gives relief to the deep seating set from the sun. The pergola not only serves as a visual anchor for the pool but is also visible from the house, making it a focal point for the entire backyard.

PAVING THE WAY

The new gasper-installed paver pool patio gave a much needed facelift to the 20-year-old pool and surrounding concrete. The large paver pattern mimics the feel of natural bluestone without the cost or unpleasant hot walking surfaces that natural bluestone can often have.

GO THROUGH A PHASE

Create a phased plan to break up large projects into more manageable ones. Phase 1 involved Gasper carpentry crews upgrading an existing uncovered wood deck to a Timbertech composite deck with an attached roof. Phase 2 focused on removing the existing concrete pool patio and upgrading it to a beautiful silver travertine, as well as adding a large cook station and bar for entertaining friends and family.

DIVINE DESIGN

Gasper thought of things we did not even know we wanted. The design wowed us, but the computer 3-D modeling was a big selling point because it allowed us to see exactly what the Gasper design team was proposing. We really loved how they designed the new walkway to the pool and the elegance of the new hot tub wall.

CHILDHOOD’S GATE

At Gasper, we understand the importance of pool safety, especially when designing for households with young children. In one of our recent projects, we reconstructed an adjacent patio to the pool area by installing pool fencing and a gate instead of the existing low walls and open access to the pool. This not only enhanced the safety of the area but also opened the view to the pool, making the patio and pool feel more connected. Additionally, we gave the pool patio a fresh look by installing new lightercolored pavers and decorative banding.

We were limited to the existing pool location, so the pool is essentially the same shape, but we added a hot tub and sun shelf. We also enlarged and changed the existing concrete around the pool to travertine.

At the far end of the pool, Gasper designed and constructed a completely new multi-functional structure. It serves as an additional two-car garage and a pool pavilion, complete with bathroom and storage. The covered seating area is the perfect place to sit and talk with friends or to hang out and watch the game.

Gasper’s design process was what gave us confidence. The design solution was much more creative than the other rudimentary designs we had received. We could tell that the Gasper designer had given it a personal touch.

Looking to update their concrete pool decking around the 12 year old pool, but they knew they wanted an outdoor fire feature, a pergola and a spot for their custom hand built Forno Classico Wood Burning Oven.

EXPANDED HORIZON

The pool was existing, completely fenced in with only a small brick (paver) patio adjacent to it. With the new space we are able to do more entertaining. There is more seating in the area to accommodate more people. It is a much nicer space to have people over. We did this area first because it was the most important spot, the most social spot. It just flows nice.

MADE IN THE SHADE

The existing pool and its concrete decking were in great shape and did not need repair. However, the homeowner wanted more patio space next to the pool. The new space, designed and built by Gasper, includes a cook station with bar-top seating and a comfortable seating area in front of a masonry wood-burning fireplace, all connected by a concrete paver patio.

OUT OF THIS WORLD

Coming out back is like a little vacation during the week. It is our own little retreat. It is so private back here; you feel like you are in your own little world.

NOT SLIPPERY WHEN WET

Cook stations with bar-top seating have become a highly sought-after feature for enhancing pool areas. This particular design was enhanced by incorporating a barefoot-friendly travertine patio, seamlessly integrated into the existing paver pool patio. Travertine, a natural stone paving material, is an excellent choice for poolside use due to its ability to stay cool in full sun and maintain a non-slip surface when wet.

CARVED IN STONE

To carve out more space off this pool, Gasper constructed masonry retaining walls to hold back the adjacent sloping hillside at the perimeter of the covered pavilion. Now, there is a comfortable, shaded location for friends and family to hang out in between dips in the pool or from which to watch the children play.

Add a touch of shade with a custom Gasper-built structure.

Now my daughter and husband negotiate over who gets to use the pool house. My daughter gets it in the afternoon and my husband in the morning.

Pergolas

MIND THE GAP

A pergola creates the structure of a roof but still allows you to enjoy the open feeling of being outside under the blue sky or stars. Despite being open, it feels cooler to sit under a pergola because of the filtered shade created by the latticed roof.

PILLARS OF STRENGTH

The Gasper-built pool pavilion was designed in a craftsman style, featuring oversized cedar-wrapped posts with paneling. The natural finish adds to its feeling of warmth and comfort, making it an inviting place for homeowners and guests to hang out.

Designing the Details

A This pass-through kitchen window bar allows people inside the pool pavilion to easily pass food and drinks to people outside. It is a great, space-saving way to serve guests (or kids).

B Having a pool house bathroom reduces the number of wet kids and guests in the main house, providing more convenience, especially if the pool area is located far from the main house.

C This small pool house bar niche provides the perfect place to set up a drink station close to the water (and all the fun). Professional-grade appliances, such as this Lynx exterior refrigerator to keep drinks ice-cold, and a small bar sink with storage, are a luxury on summer days by the pool.

D An outdoor shower is fantastic for changing and rinsing off before or after swimming. It also has many practical uses, such as providing a convenient place to rinse off muddy pets, kids, or yourself after gardening. And, of course, many people just love the feeling of showering under the open sky.

E Don’t let pesky insects ruin your evening fun. Many of our pool houses and pavilions are constructed with built-in retractable screening by Phantom Screens. These screens can be quickly and easily lowered when you need them and then disappear out of sight when you do not, with the push of a switch.

Your Own Little World

Lush and vibrant plants add aesthetic appeal, serve as a natural privacy screen, and create a serene oasis that allows you to relax and unwind.

Designing the Details

A The pool house, constructed by Gasper, is a luxurious addition to the property. It features double-flanking pergolas, a bar, an outdoor kitchen, and a full bathroom. The surrounding garden, inspired by the homeowner’s travels to Japan, utilized the various contrasts in form and texture of the different evergreen plant materials to create a visually appealing poolside garden that offers year-round interest.

B A tall, bright red urn nestled among ornamental grasses draws attention and repeats the red flowers of the drift roses and the tropical Mandevilla vine.

C Crape Myrtle trees tend to start blooming around the beginning of July, which coincides with peak pool season, making them a very popular pool planting choice. This white flowering variety is called ‘Natchez.’ It has beautiful multi-colored exfoliating bark and is one of the hardiest crape myrtles in our area.

Chaise Lounge

The term chaise lounge comes from the French words for a ‘long chair’, chaise longue (shez –lawng).
