ON THE COVER
The Gasper design for this outdoor room included an elegant fireplace masterpiece that serves as a gathering magnet for outdoor entertaining. See more of this stunning project on page 44.
I grew up gardening with my dad. I suppose that doesn’t come as much of a surprise. People have asked me if my love of plants is an intrinsic part of my being, or if it would have existed without my upbringing by professional gardeners. It truly feels like a basic part of who I am, but of course, I cannot be entirely sure. Of one thing I am certain — the connection I have with nature cultivated through time spent in my garden brings me constant joy and inspiration. It is a bond that I will undoubtedly always strive to nurture in my children as well.
Gardening
There is a myriad of benefits to gardening with kids, as a quick search on Google reveals. These include increased immunity, better sleep, and an appreciation for healthy eating. Gardening also helps to instill patience and problem-solving skills in children. The greatest experience with my 2-year-old is re-living all the wonders and sensations of gardening myself through his eyes. I can reconnect with all the little details that as adults we tend to overlook as we work to finish the task. For a child, the point is simply the experience of the present moment, nothing more.
Watching my son excitedly pick yellow buttercups and run over to give them to our neighbor reminds me that gardening has always been a community affair. Sharing the fruits of our labor with those around us creates a bond of mutual support. Early agriculture required teamwork. Today, gardening can be a solo affair, but I find fulfillment in sharing my passion with others. In our neighborhood, The Dax Pact Foundation Memorial Garden (www.thedaxpact.org) sits on the curb, overlooking the street. In it are plants and ornaments contributed by different neighbors, each providing a small piece of the whole — a reminder of the strength found in unity and community.
There is an infinite amount of wisdom in our natural world. By regularly exposing our children to nature, we help them learn how to tap into this resource themselves and form their own personal relationship with Mother Nature. This, in turn, can lead to a stronger sense of self and a deeper connection to our communities. So, take your kids outside to enjoy the sunshine and soil, and make the present and the future that much more beautiful.

Botanical Ice Cubes
Elevate your summer gatherings with a refreshing twist! Infusing your ice cubes with edible flowers and herbs not only adds a touch of botanical beauty but also creates a flavorful adventure for your taste buds. Picture the subtle hint of lavender dancing in your lemonade or the invigorating burst of basil in your iced tea. With a dash of creativity and a sprinkle of nature's finest, your beverages will blossom into something truly extraordinary.
To ensure crystal-clear ice cubes, start with distilled, pure water. Tap water may contain minerals and impurities that could cloud your ice. Boil the water twice for optimal clarity. After the first boil, allow the water to cool to room temperature before boiling it again and letting it slightly cool once more.
Now, onto the fun part! Pour the warm water halfway into your ice cube trays, then add a small edible flower or herb sprig into each compartment. (Make sure your flowers and herbs are organic and free of impurities) Top it off with more water and freeze until solid. The result? Beautiful, flavorful ice cubes that will impress your guests and elevate any drink.
The possibilities are endless when it comes to choosing your edible embellishments. Lavender flowers, mint leaves, pansies, violets, and strawberry blossoms offer delicate flavors and stunning visual appeal. For a more herbaceous twist, try chive blossoms, borage, cilantro blossoms, or rosemary. Feeling adventurous? Experiment with chamomile, roses, dandelion, lilac flowers, marigold, lemon balm, or even pea flowers.
So, gather your favorite blooms and herbs, and let your drinks bloom with flavor and flair! Your guests will be delighted by the botanical beauty and the refreshing burst of flavor in every sip. Cheers to summer's simple pleasures!

Imagine stepping out to your garden with a trug and clippers, ready to harvest blooms to create your own special flower arrangements — all from flowers you’ve grown in your own garden. This is not a dream — it’s within your reach. All by making a cutting garden.
What is a cutting garden and why would you want to grow one? You’ll learn about this in our class plus: What are the best seeds and plants for cut flowers? How to arrange your flowers. What make the best "fillers?” How to choose the best vase — or what flowers will look best in your favorite vase?

What’s Eating You? Good Bug/Bad Bug
SATURDAY, JUNE 22 | 9:00am–10:30am
Did you know that sometimes seeing nibbles on your plants is a sign of a healthy garden? Not all bugs in the garden are bad guys — some are beneficial insects that are your allies in working to help keep your garden pest-free. In this workshop you will learn: How to identify beneficial insects and pest insects — in several of their life-stages. What plants attract beneficial insects and how to add them to your garden.
What are the most common pest insects in our area and how to best prevent them from coming in and how to combat them.
Beneficial Bug Habitats
Your Pollinators and Beneficial Bugs need a home in your garden! Our BB Houses are a fun and practical addition to your home garden. They are perfect for kids to learn about organic farming, predatory insects, and pollinators. The houses harbor beneficial bugs that keep insects such as aphids off our plants. Pollinators use the houses to develop from egg to adulthood, where they can facilitate the reproduction of flowering plants! Help host these essential species right in your garden!

Refreshing Elderberry Drink Recipe for Summer Entertaining
The flowers of elderberry plants emit a delightful, sweet, and soft anise scent. This is why people in many parts of Europe add these flowers to pitchers of cold water or various cocktails to create refreshing summer beverages infused with their perfume. Try using ‘Black Lace’ flowers with lime and an elderflower syrup or liqueur, such as St. Germain for a beautifully pink-tinged drink for your next backyard bash.
Blueberry Lime Elderflower Mocktail courtesy of www.sugarsalted.com
This elderflower mocktail is a refreshing nonalcoholic cocktail that goes with everything!
Lightly floral and sweet, with lime juice and mint, it's perfect for any party.
Prep Time: 5 mins
Total: 5 mins
Servings: 1
INGREDIENTS
2 tablespoons elderflower syrup (or St. Germain for an alcoholic drink)
1-2 tablespoons fresh lime juice
small handful of blueberries, fresh or frozen
1 cup mineral (sparkling) water
a handful of ice
fresh Elderberry flowers for garnish
lime slices, for garnish
fresh mint for garnish
INSTRUCTIONS
Combine elderflower syrup, lime juice (adjust the amount to your preference) and blueberries in a glass. Lightly mash them all together with a muddler, so that some blueberries break and release their juices.

The patio is such a pretty space now. There are a lot of cool little spots, and it feels private and tucked in.

A NATURAL FIT
The new patio provides the family with many opportunities to enjoy the tranquility of their backyard. The new irregular bluestone patio has two main areas, one for dining and one for lounging. The homeowners had considered other materials for the patio but finally decided that natural irregular bluestone fit perfectly into their wooded lot. A paver brick detail ties the natural materials to the brick on the house. To see more of this project scan the QR code above.
We
—JOE R..Gasper’s design process was what gave us confidence. The design solution was much more creative than the other rudimentary designs we had received. We could tell that the Gasper designer had given it a personal touch.
—MICHAEL G.We are out there all the time and always showing it off. Gasper did a fantastic job!
—JULIE C.THREE’S A C HA RM
Constructed in three phases, this Gasper-built featured project perfectly complements the existing house and property.
PHASE ONE: THE PATIO
The Gasper design transformed a modest, pre-existing dry-laid bluestone patio into an spacious, wet-laid masterpiece, seamlessly integrating three distinct living spaces: a sophisticated cooking zone, a welcoming dining area, and a cozy, casual seating space anchored by a wood-burning masonry fireplace. The use of real stone veneer on both the cook station and the elegant fireplace beautifully echoes the stonework of the house, creating a harmonious blend that suggests all elements were constructed together. The cook station is outfitted with a top-of-the-line Lynx grill and pizza oven, making entertaining large groups effortless and enjoyable.
PHASE TWO: THE POOL
Our homeowners had always envisioned their home with a pool and accompanying pool patio, so it was a natural decision to engage the same Gasper designers they trusted to bring this vision to life. Stay tuned…this pool project will be featured in our July, late summer issue!
PHASE THREE: THE FRONT
After they finished the backyard projects, our featured project’s homeowners decided to continue the collaboration with Gasper to revamp the front walkway and the foundation plantings adjacent to the house. The original path, made from dry-laid bluestone, had settled unevenly over time, necessitating its reconstruction. Opting for a wet-laid bluestone approach ensures lower maintenance, thanks to its concrete base and mortared joints. The new planting scheme, which replaced the previously overgrown vegetation, was thoughtfully designed to provide a vibrant display of colors and interest throughout the seasons.
IMAGINE THAT
We are so pleased with how it turned out. It is hard to imagine what was here before. It looks like it always should have been here.
—ANGELA R.TAKE IT OUTSIDE
We love to entertain, so we wanted a larger space. We didn’t really know where to start design-wise. We knew we wanted an outdoor fireplace and a pool.
—ANGELA R.ABOVE WATER
I love the way the patio flows when we are entertaining.
—ANGELA R.PERFECT EXAMPLE
What were we looking for in a landscape company? Communication and responsiveness. Communication is key. I like to know what is going on at all times, and our sales designer, Erik Freeman, was very responsive. I reached out anytime I had a question or issue, and he was always quick to respond.
—ANGELA R.PIZZA FRIDAYS
The pizza oven was a must-have. It’s great; we use it almost every Friday. We have friends and family over, and we are constantly coming up with new recipes to try. It has been fun.
