Why Landscaping?

Why landscaping, you might ask? I have always loved working in gardens. As a child, I enjoyed helping my parents with their vegetable and flower gardens. Little did I know then that this passion would lead me to start our own landscaping company over 36 years ago in 1988.

When we started the company, I knew that we wanted to hold the company to certain high standards. We wanted to make sure that great customer service was our number one goal. By instilling these values in everything we do, we knew we would build strong, long-lasting relationships, deliver consistent service, and earn our customers’ loyalty.

In addition to great customer service, we were also committed to using proper installation techniques, quality materials and to never cut corners. At Gasper, we have developed an internal system over the past 35 years that allows us to make sure that our landscape projects get the attention they both require and deserve. One particular way we ensure quality assurance and control is having our talented and experienced construction supervisor, Jeff Karr, on board. He has been with our company for 26 years. Jeff visits all our active construction sites regularly. To read more about Jeff, please see his profile on page 4.

Our experienced, long-term employees give Gasper the depth of knowledge and consistency that we need to continue such a high level of quality in everything we do. This translates to the garden center, too, where in the past year, we had quite a few of our nursery staff take a rigorous professional exam to become PA Certified Horticulturalists. The expertise was always here, but now we have the proof!

There are so many new, exciting things happening at Gasper, in all our departments, that we cannot wait for you to visit any of our stores or contact us for landscape services. We promise you — you will be happy that you did!

Three Word Bio: Open-Minded, Persistent, Loyal.

Describe a normal day for you: I arrive at 6:30am to help get the crews out to job sites by 7:30am. Then I visit sites for most of the day, returning at 4:30–5pm to prepare for the next day.

Best Perk for Working at Gasper: I get to work with the projects during all phases of construction and see them to completion.

Best Landscape Tip: Have a plan before you start. This is true of any size project.

You wouldn’t know it by looking at me but… I just turned 60.

My Happy Place: My off-the-grid cabin in the Adirondacks.

If I could have a superpower, it would be: To be able to fly, of course.

Made for the Shade

Get color in your shade garden with a rainbow of colorful foliage.

If you want to design a great perennial shade garden, our landscape designers suggest that you don’t rely entirely on flowers. Instead, by focusing on perennial plants with impressive foliage, you can create interest in your garden all year round. Below are some of our staff’s favorite shade foliage plants that we think you will love.

Hostas Although many are flowering, the big tropical leaves are what hostas are best known for.

Available in various sizes, from miniature to almost shrub-sized, and various leaf color and variegation patterns. Once established, they are drought-tolerant. One of the only downsides of Hostas is that they are a favorite of deer to eat.

Polygonatum (Solomon’s Seal)

Gracefully arching stems with bell-like white flowers make Polygonatum stand out in the shade. Polygonatum is available in both native and variegated varieties.

Drought-toleranct once established.

C. Hakonechloa (Japanese Forest Grass) It might be hard to say, but Hakonechloa, (Pronounced Ha-ckon-ee-kl-oh-ah) is an excellent option for brightening dark shady areas in your garden with its bright chartreuse foliage. In addition, its narrow leaves add a lot of texture and movement to beds. Plus, it looks great en masse, or as an accent.

D. Heucheras (Coral Bells) A native plant that attracts pollinators like hummingbirds and butterflies when it is in bloom, Heucheras are available in many varieties that sport

large, ruffled, semi-evergreen leaves ranging in color from chartreuse and peach to dark purple. Ferns They may not have showy flowers, but they have wonderful textured fronds (leaves), which makes ferns a classic go-to for shade gardens. They come in a variety of sizes and colors, like the Japanese Painted Fern (Athyrium niponicum) pictured above.

1. Big Color

Perennials can deliver bold colors from flowers and/or foliage.

2. Seasonal Interest

Whatever the season, there is a perennial that shines in it.

3. Food for Pollinators

More flowers make bees, butterflies, hummingbirds, and other pollinators happy!

4. Lower Maintenance

Perennials need less time and effort in feeding, watering, and tending than annuals.

5. Economical Unlike Annuals, Perennials return every year! Reasons Why We Love Perennials

Peonies Here are the three common types of peonies Gasper carries.

Tree Peonies

Enormous flowers on sturdy stems and great foliage. A woody shrub that can be up to 4 feet in height and width. Blooms April-May.

Herbaceous Peonies

Produces large multi-petaled flowers in May and June that must often be staked or supported with a peony cage. Stems die back to the ground each fall.

Itoh Peonies The Itoh Peonies are a hybrid between tree and common peonies, resulting in a peony with large flowers on sturdy stems that don’t require staking. They are shorter than tree and herbaceous peonies and die back to the ground for winter. Blooms in June.

Groundcovers Varieties listed below are considered deer resistant.

Small spreading perennials are often referred to as groundcovers, and they can be very helpful in lowering maintenance in the garden by reducing areas for

mulch and weed growth. There are many evergreen and flowering varieties to choose from. Some of our most popular choices are:

Ornamental Grasses & Sedges Most grasses and sedges are deer resistant.

Perfect for the garden, ornamental grasses are perennial, easy to grow, and deer resistant. Grasses add texture to mixed beds, and taller varieties can be

used for screening. Seedheads and plumes can persist into the winter, adding interest and often food for birds.

Our latest featured homeowners created an inspiring backyard project after years of saving Gasper catalogs.

e hope that our catalogs inspire you with ideas and images for your own yard. Adam and Whitney R., the homeowners featured in this issue, were particularly inspired by a Gasper-built pool house they saw in one of our publications a couple of years ago. Although they were not ready to start their pool project at the time, they began collecting images from Gasper as inspiration for when the time was right. Seven years later, they have a new deck, an enlarged pool paver patio, and a beautiful and very functional pool house — all built by Gasper.

Adam and Whitney added a new composite deck that almost doubled the size of their old deck. This has provided them with more space for seating and as an overflow space from their existing screened-in porch. They chose a composite wood that does not warp, rot, or need staining, reducing maintenance and providing more time to spend with family and friends. The angled direction of the deck boards and the inlaid border detail reflect Gasper’s attention to design and craftsmanship.

The pool was existing, but the paving around it was extended to provide more space for homeowners to enjoy dining and lounging by the pool. The new patio around the pool is curved in shape, and the large pavers are arranged in a random rectangular pattern. This pattern, typically used with natural bluestone, gives the patio a fresh, transitional style because of the smooth-textured, more contemporarylooking concrete paver. The follow-up communication has been amazing. Erik is always checking in to make sure there are no issues or that we do not have any questions. Many people have the experience with contractors where once the contractor gets their final payment, you don’t exist anymore, so the follow-up communication from Erik has been really appreciated.

The Gasper-built pool house is a versatile structure that serves multiple purposes. It includes a bathroom and a changing area, which is convenient for keeping wet feet out of the main house. In addition, it provides extra storage space for items like pool toys and equipment. The pool house also features a modest common area where family members and guests can retreat from the hot sun and relax in the cool, air-conditioned space. The pool house is strategically

positioned in alignment with the pool, and its large double doors open up to a big TV that is perfectly centered for optimal viewing of sports games or other TV shows while enjoying a swim.

Like Clockwork

The construction process with Gasper was great. Everyone was super friendly. They showed up every day at the same time and left at the same time. They always let us know if they weren’t coming for rain or another reason.
