If you have visited the Gasper Home and Garden Center, especially in the spring — our busiest time of the year — you might have found me working alongside my hardworking employees in the annual greenhouse. One day this spring, a first-time visitor approached me to tell me that they were very impressed with the quality of our plant material. They also mentioned that our selection was “enormous” and that our prices were very competitive compared to the big box store they usually shopped at. As a business owner, that was music to my ears.
You might ask how a family-owned, independent garden center like ours can compete with national box companies. That’s a good question. At Gasper, we do this by personalizing our services to our local community. One of our talented employees, Jeannie Sachs, has impressively revamped and revitalized our learning and workshop series after a brief hiatus during the pandemic. The feedback from these events has been extremely positive, leading us to plan many new workshops for 2025 and beyond. These events are not only informative but make great gifts, date nights with your partner, or time spent with friends. Additionally, Jeannie oversees our design consults, providing affordable professional design advice to our retail customers. Truth be told, it is very hard to compete with the ever-increasing sea of mass merchants. But my interaction with that customer gets to the very key of how we compete — by earning the trust and loyalty of our customers, one by one, every single day, in each one of our three stores, and four divisions. The new hot tub is located on the lower paver patio but benefits from an extension of the deck. The raised access from the deck makes getting into the hot tub much easier as well as making room for a bench to set down towels or to converse with guests while in the hot tub.

This is why it is crucial to find the right company to handle your outdoor construction project. Homeowners Maritza M. and Jeff K. were drawn to Gasper by articles in our seasonal circulars, just like this one. Maritza and Jeff’s yard was very steep, so in order to create a larger patio and a flatter yard, they decided to terrace the yard using two decorative block retaining walls from Unilock Concord. These walls varied in height from 18 to 30 inches. (According to the Oxford Language Dictionary, to terrace means to make or form sloping land into a number of level flat areas resembling a series of steps.) The patio itself is made of wet-laid Pennsylvania bluestone, which matches the front walkway. The new patio was spacious enough to accommodate a teak extension table from Kingsley Bate that can be extended to seat 8-12 diners, as well as a casual seating area with a gas fire table.
A new gate and walkway from the driveway area and a series of steps that lead down to the lawn area make the whole yard more accessible and usable.
Like many of our clients, this project was completed in two phases: the patio and retaining walls and then the addition of a masonry cook station. Maritza is not a granite person, so she chose a smooth gray concrete countertop for the cook station, which was custom-built by a local company, Liquid Stone Concrete Design, LLC. The concrete counter gives the project a clean, more contemporary feeling and is just as durable and easy to clean as granite.

You did not mention what type of furniture you have, so let me start by saying … it depends if you need furniture covers. Some pieces like teak and polymer are fine to leave outside all winter uncovered. Other pieces such as extruded aluminum or woven resin (which have an extruded aluminum frame) can be left outside but should be covered during the harsh winter months to protect them.
