Mission Japan: Rallying Catholics to Evangelise Japan With the recent visit of Cardinal Filoni to Japan in which he presented the Bishops of Japan a letter from Pope Francis and the election of Bishop Kikuchi to the Archdiocese of Tokyo, the Church here is being strongly encouraged to return to the missionary spirit of the early Christians of 16th and 17th century Japan. In the letter Pope Francis exhorts the Bishops to forego ‘efficiency’ and adopt anew the missionary impulse to evangelize once again throughout this nation. In recognizing that Christians in Japan only make up about 1% of the population Pope Francis however sees the urgent need to bring the love of Christ to a population here with “high divorce rates, suicide among the young, people who choose to live totally detached from social life (hikikomori), religious and spiritual formalism, moral relativism, religious indifference, and obsession with work and earning money.” Interestingly, Pope Francis also highlights the role of lay people and writes, “not infrequently involving priests and religious, who are also members of that People whom God calls to fully live their mission. Such situations contribute to the work of evangelisation; as bishops, we are called upon to know and to accompany the charisms they bear and make them participants in our work in the context of pastoral integration.” With Archbishop Kikuchi’s accomplished experience in missionary evangelisation in Ghana and now set to lead the Archdiocese of Tokyo (officially from December 2017), Pope Francis is aiming to reset Japan back to an active missionary zeal where both religious and lay people are being called to work together in this great new evangelisation effort.
New Archbishop Kikuchi of Tokyo
"I want to bring unity and mission to Tokyo’s mix of different cultures" The new archbishop of Tokyo explains his vision for this new responsibility. He will be shepherd to 90,000 faithful in a city with over 9 million inhabitants. The fruit of his missionary experience in Ghana. - Tokyo (AsiaNews) To bring unity to Tokyo, a city full of "diversity" and "a mix of cultures"; and to bring the missionary spirit to the Christian community there, "a minority, compared to the Japanese" population. This is the vision that Msgr. Tarcisio Isao Yama Kikuchi has of his future as Archbishop of Tokyo. Nominated two days by Pope Francis, Msgr. Kikuchi wanted to share with AsiaNews the prospects of his ministry. Read more here. 4

Fake News & Cultural Marxism
With the assault of Cultural Marxism on the world since the 1930s, Fake news has proliferated wildly particularly over the past year. Lauded by Saul Alinsky in his book, Rules for Radicals, not only have long-standing traditional values come under attack but also Christianity and Western society. In short Cultural Marxism aims to bring down and crash established society values and customs and rebuild a new world order that includes curtailing individual and religious freedom, free speech and the traditional family. Tools used in this onslaught comprise of a compliant mainstream media industry and increasingly political ‘progressive’ establishments (agents) that have lurched dramatically left in recent years, the strangling tyranny of Political Correctness that shuts down free speech, and an obsession with creating endless divisions in society. Wherever divisions are being fomented, whether it is between racial groups, men and women, husband and wife, religious denominations, you can be sure that the hand of the progenitor of deception, Satan, is behind it all. Through his Marxist Alinsky agents, God & Truth, beauty, goodness, traditional values, family and marriage, the dignity of man and woman, the unborn child, population growth, all, are under attack. Typically that which these agents find fault with is the very thing that they themselves are guilty of. Articles in this issue cover this naked aggression by subversive Cultural Marxism, a shrill ideology bereft of substance but malignantly infectious. See Catechism of the Catholic Church
Accompanying a friend in Japan
Two days ago, walking home, a group of Japanese schoolgirls, maybe seven or eight persons, ahead of me appeared. They were walking slowly as one of them was using crutches to walk. She also had metal braces on both the lower parts of her legs so that walking was not easy for her. It takes about 20 minutes to walk to the station, there is a bus service along this route but she and her friends were choosing to walk. As I approached I could hear them chattering, one could see that they were great friends and enjoying a laugh together. Then they heard my footsteps and needing to make space for me to pass them they broke into groups allowing me to walk by them. The girl with the crutches stopped and edged closer to the side of the path and apologized to me for being ‘in the way’. And I apologized to her and to her friends for disturbing their walking space. As I passed by them, it struck me how beautiful and touching it was to see seven to eight girls accompany their friend who could not walk as fast as them and knowing that to get home would take much longer than usual. It did not bother them. They made it their mission to be with their friend in her difficulties while walking and their shared chatting with her was lively, loving and joyful. In this little event, on an ordinary path with nothing especially happening, I could see Christ in action among these amazing students such was their love and desire to accompany their friend. It is in these seemingly simple actions between people that we see extraordinary examples of Christ’s message of love and indeed great patience that He wishes us to have for our fellow brothers and sisters. As I continued on my way home I said a prayer to God that He bless this courageous crippled girl and that if it was God’s will that He cure her. These girls, most likely none of them Christians, behaved in a way that reminds me and us all how to be a Christian and to live as a Christian. Christ accompanies these girls too. Please say a few words for them and especially for the girl with the crutches in your prayers. - Dayly Knightly 5

Mission Japan
Letter of the Holy Father to the Bishops of Japan, on the occasion of the Pastoral Visit of Card. Fernando Filoni, Prefect of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples [17-26 September 2017] Dear brothers in the episcopate, The pastoral visit of the Prefect of the Congregation for the Evangelisation of Peoples offers me the opportunity to convey to you my cordial greeting, recalling our meeting during your ad Limina visit in March 2015. I wish to confide to you that, every time I think of the Church in Japan, my thoughts turn to the witness of the many martyrs who offered their life for the faith. They have always had a special place in my heart: I think of Saint Paul Miki and his companions, who were sacrificed in 1597, faithful to Christ and to the Church; I think of the innumerable confessors of the faith, of the Blessed Justus Takayama Ukon, who in the same period preferred poverty and the life of exile to abjuring the name of Jesus. And what can we say of the so-called “hidden Christians”, who from 1600 until the mid-1800s lived clandestine lives so as not to abjure, but rather to preserve their faith and whom we recently commemorated on the 150th anniversary of their discovery? The many martyrs and confessors of the faith, diverse by nationality, language, social class and age, have in common a profound love for the Son of God, renouncing their civil status or other aspects of their social condition, “in order that [they] may gain Christ” (Phil 3: 8). Remembering such a spiritual heritage, it is dear to me to address you, Brothers who have inherited and with such delicate car continue the task of evangelisation, especially taking care of the weakest and favouring their integration in the communities of the faithful of various origins. I wish to thank you for this, and also for your commitment in cultural development, interreligious dialogue and care for creation. I wish, in particular, to reflect with you on the missionary effort of the Church in Japan. If “the Church was born catholic, that is to say she was born ‘outward-bound’, that she was born missionary” (General Audience, 17.9.2014). Indeed, “the love of Christ controls us” (2 Cor 5: 14), driving us to offer our life for the Gospel. Such dynamism dies if we lose our missionary enthusiasm. Therefore, “life grows by being given away, and it weakens in isolation and comfort. Indeed, those who enjoy life most are those who leave security on the shore and become excited by the mission of communicating life to others” (Apostolic Exhortation Evangelii Gaudium, 10). 12
Mission Japan
I focus on the Sermon on the Mount, in which Jesus says, “You are the salt of the earth; … you are the light of the world” (Mt 5: 13-14). The salt and light function for a service. The Church, as salt, has the task of preserving from corruption and of giving flavour; as light, she prevents darkness from prevailing, ensuring a clear view of reality and the reason for existence. These words are also a strong appeal to fidelity and authenticity; that is, it is necessary for salt to truly give flavour and for light to vanquish darkness. The Kingdom of Heaven – as Jesus speaks of it – is presented initially with the poverty of a little leaven or of a small seed; this symbolism reproduces well the current situation of the Church in the context of the Japanese world. Jesus has entrusted to her a great spiritual and moral mission. I am well aware that there exist not a few difficulties due to a lack of clergy and of men and women religious, and of limited participation by lay faithful. But the scarcity of workers cannot reduce the commitment to evangelisation: rather, it is an opportunity that stimulates us to seek them incessantly, like the master of a vineyard who goes out at all hours in search of new workers for his vines (cf Mt 20: 1-7). Dear brothers, the challenges that the current situation places before us cannot make us resigned, neither should it lead to an irenic and paralysing dialogue, even if some problematic situations give rise to a number of concerns; I refer, for example, to the high divorce rates, suicide among the young, people who choose to live totally detached from social life (hikikomori), religious and spiritual formalism, moral relativism, religious indifference, and obsession with work and earning money. It is equally true that a society that races ahead in economic development also creates among you the poor, marginalised and excluded; I think not only of those who are materially, but also spiritually and morally poor. In this very specific context, there is an urgent need for the Church in Japan to constantly renew her choice for the mission of Jesus and that she be salt and light. The genuine evangelising force of your Church, which comes also from having been a Church of martyrs and confessors of the faith, is a great asset to protect and develop. To this end, I would like to underline the need for a solid and integral priestly and religious formation, a particularly urgent task today, especially due to the spread of the “throwaway culture” (Meeting with seminarians and novices, 6.7.2013). This type of mentality leads the young in particular to think that it is not possible to love truly, that nothing stable exists and that everything, love included, is relative to the circumstances and needs of sentiments. An important step in priestly and religious formation is therefore to help those who undertake such a journey to understand and experience deeply the characteristics of love as taught by Jesus, which is free, involves the sacrifice of the self, and is merciful forgiveness. This experience makes it possible to go against the grain and to trust in the Lord, Who does not let us down. It is the witness that Japanese society thirsts for greatly. I wish to say another word on ecclesial movements approved by the Apostolic See. With the evangelising impulse and their witness, they can be of help in pastoral service and in the missio ad gentes. In recent decades, in fact, the Holy Spirit has inspired in the Church men and women who intend, by their participation, to enliven the world in which they work, not infrequently involving priests and religious, who are also members of that People whom God calls to fully live their mission. Such situations contribute to the work of evangelisation; as bishops, we are called upon to know and to accompany the charisms they bear and make them participants in our work in the context of pastoral integration. Dear brothers in the episcopate, I entrust each one of you to the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary and I assure you of my closeness and prayer. May the Lord send workers to His Church in Japan and support you with His consolation. Thank you for your ecclesial service. I extend to you, to the Church in Japan and to her noble population my apostolic blessing, while I ask you not to forget me in your prayers. - Check the link here.
Mission Japan

Augustin History of the Mission
The story of the Augustinian Mission in Japan is one that spans centuries. In 1602, Augustinian Friars from the Philippines arrived in Japan. They built the Church of the Holy Spirit in Nagasaki and more churches thereafter. Sadly, however, missionaries and their converts soon came under severe persecution and martyrdom, leading to the suppression of Catholicism, kept alive only through an underground movement in Nagasaki. In 1952, 350 years after their first arrival in Japan, the Augustinians were invited by the Diocese of Nagasaki to return to Japan. Three Augustinians - Father George Krupa, O.S.A., Father Tom Purcell, O.S.A., and Father Edward Robinson, O.S.A. - accepted the invitation. The mission has continued to grow since it set roots in Nagasaki. Today, Augustinians minister in four cities throughout Japan: Nagasaki, Fukuoka, Nagoya and Tokyo. Though the Catholic population in Japan is small, the friars minister to a growing community of faith.
Ministries in Japan
In 1952, the Augustinians established Shiroyama Catholic Church, located just 800 meters from the epicenter of the atom bomb explosion. The founding of Saint Mary's School, the first parochial school in all of Japan, soon followed. Missions in japan expanded, with Sasaoka Church, Fokuoka (founded 1961); Minato Church, Nagoya, where the friars are involved in the “ministry of the sea, called Stella Maris; and Kasai Church in Tokyo ( founded 1964), a metropolitan parish. In addition, the Augustinian Formation House, is also located in Tokyo, where young Japanese men prepare for ministry as an Augustinian priest or brother.

Magdalene of Nagasaki (died 1634), an Augustinian Tertiary in Japan, in spite of great
danger and difficulty, remained faithful to Jesus Christ until her martyrdom. Born in the early seventeenth century, Magdalene belonged to a devout Christian family. Her parents were martyred around 1620, when Magdalene was in her teens. It was around this time that the first Augustinians arrived in Japan. As a committed Christian, Magdalene made herself known to them. She served as a catechist and interpreter for the early Augustinian missionaries. She found their Augustinian spirituality appealing, with its emphasis on the search for God, interiority, and community. She asked to be accepted into the Order of Saint Augustine, and in 1625 was formally received into the Augustinian Third Order. Being a Christian in Japan became more and more difficult, as the persecution became stronger. Magdalene fled to the hills, where she worked at bringing the Word of God to those who did not know Jesus, and strengthing the faith of those who did. In 1632 the Augustinians Francis of Jesus Terrero and Vincent of Saint Anthony Simoens, who had been her first counselors, were burned to death because of their Christian faith. This served to make Magdalene's faith and commitment to Christ even stronger. She located two other Augustinian Friars, Martin of Saint Nicholas Lumbreras and Melchior of Saint Augustine Sรกnchez. They continued to develop her appreciation and practice of Augustinian spirituality. Eventually these two Friars were also martyred. Magdalene then took as her spiritual guide Jordan of Saint Stephen, a Dominican. Since Dominicans also follow the Rule of Augustine, the spirit of Augustine continued to grow in her. She considered becoming a full-fledged Dominican sister, but continued religious persecution kept her from doing so. Moved by her strong Christian conviction, Magdalene voluntarily declared herself a follower of Jesus. She was threatened, ridiculed and tortured, but her Christian witness was strong. After 13 days of torture, wearing her Augustinian habit, Magdalene was suspended upside down in a pit of garbage. Then her body was burned and her ashes scattered. Pope John Paul II canonized her in 1987. - Midwest Augustinians. Read the article here.

Japan, the seedbed of Martyrs The Augustinian Recollect missions
Three years before the arrival of the Recollects the Philippine Church was implicated in the evangelization of Japan. In July 1622 the Province wanted to join in this effort and organized between 1623 and 1632 six expeditions, of which only two arrived to their destination. The first expedition was composed of the Recollects Francisco de Jesús and Vicente de San Antonio. They were captured in 1629 and burnt alive on the 3rd of September 1632. The second expedition left Manila at the beginning of August 1632 with Melichor de San Agustín and Martín de San Nicolás. By the 2nd of November they were imprisoned and were burnt alive forty days later in Nagasaki. One of the fundamental aspects of the evangelization of Japan was the collaboration of the laity, which showed that their courage and commitment was no less than that of the religious. In October 1632 there were already some 300 confraternity lay people who had been martyred. Read more here. 20

Saint Magdalena of Nagasaki (1612-1634)
Saint Magdalena of Nagasaki, became a member of Third Order Augustinian. She made vows with the help of Fr. Francisco Terero, O.S.A (Beatified in 1868), and after his martyrdom, she was leading the spiritual life under the guidance of Fr. Giordano, O.P. When Fr Giordano and Fr Nishi were arrested, she declared herself as Christian and a religious nun to the authorities. At first, the Magistrate wanted to save this young beautiful woman, recommending apostasy in exchange of good offers. However, since she stood fast and firm, they started to torture her. She received bamboo sticks under her nails and was ordered to scratch the ground. They hung her from ceiling and placed a tub containing water under her head. They pulled up her just before she could suffocate and repeated their act. She was forced to drink many tubs of water and they placed heavy stones on her belly. But she did not give up. Finally for the first time to a woman, they hanged her in a pit. To increase the shame and anguish, in her case, she was suspended with only one foot tied. Normally, after one or two days later, tortured person would die by this pit hanging. She survived more than 13 days. At last, the executioners dropped her to the pit many times, her head was damaged, leaving her half dead. On that night, it rained. The rain water filled the hole, she was choking and drowning. It was in the morning on Oct. 15, 1634. She was 22 years old. - Read more here.

St. Marina of Omura-burned alive in 1634 in Nagasaki, Japan
Why be a Lay Dominican when I can become a Lay Cistercian, Secular Franciscan, Carmelite, or a Benedictine Oblate? Even Alcoholics Anonymous offers a Spiritual AA. The answer is certainly personal, but the definitive response would be because of the spirituality and charism to which each individual has been called in their vocation. Think of the Lay Dominicans that have been called to martyrdom: •St. TÔMA Nguyen Van De- one of the Vietnamese martyrs, died in 1839 •St. Marina of Omura-burned alive in 1634 in Nagasaki, Japan •St. Gaspar Koteda-beheaded in 1601 - Read more here. 21

Wife In 1975 my husband was transferred from Okinawa to Ota in Gumma Prefecture. We no sooner met Fr. Donnon, the pastor of the Ota church, than he said, “Wait just a second”. He went to pick up an application form for ME, handed it to us, and proceeded to explain it briefly. On learning that it was a two day experience requiring getting someone to watch our kids in a place completely new to us, where we knew no one, I had my apprehensions. First of all, would there be any such people who would take in the children of strangers? Well in fact there was no need to worry about that at all, for a couple immediately volunteered. There is no way to ever thank them enough. Husband When I was transferred to Ota my wife, being Catholic, went to Mass every Sunday, and I was her non–Christian taxi driver. So when we were invited to attend a ME, I did not at all object to participating. What struck me most strongly about

I certainly had heard the passages from the Bible saying that, “God is Love”, and “Love your neighbor” etc.; but this was the first time in my life that anyone expressed that directly to me. It was a surprise, and a shock. But it did give me a feeling of acceptance. That was a first, along with hearing the open sharings of couples just like ourselves. I think I can say that the experience really changed my life. Wife Even now 30 years later, it is with great joy that I recall the warmth of the couples involved and all the effort they put into the preparations, the great food, etc. I also remember how difficult it was for us to communicate deeply. A big surprise was how many couples from the area who had previously experienced ME came to celebrate the final Mass with us, joyfully shouting “Shalom”! and embracing one another at the greeting of peace. This was an entirely new experience for me. And I am eternally grateful to Fr. Donnon, the couple that watched our kids, the fellow participants, and especially my husband for making that ME a life–changing experience - a grace beyond description. Husband The final Mass was a thing of joy which all spontaneously expressed during the greeting of peace when, with absolutely no sense of embarrassment, all embraced one another, sharing from the heart the Peace (Shalom!) that Jesus had promised. It was easy to understand how, in that ideal atmosphere of ,true peace, a man could say from his heart, “I love you” to one who was, at the time, a virtual stranger: love, the love of spouses for one another, the love that is God - what an experience to be given the opportunity to think about all of this! After that I joined a group of middle aged men in their study of the Bible. As my wife has shared, a year later all of us were baptized. But I will never forget that prior to the Baptism Fr. Donnon said, “You 23
FIRES ENCOUNTER - Japan know, you have to desire Baptism from the heart”. I got the impression that he was reading my heart, for which I am thankful. Wife For me one of the most wonderful and unexpected graces from participating in ME was the decision of my husband to study the catechism and be baptized, along with 10 other men who were similarly influenced. My husband joined that group of men late in their preparation, and while I thought it might be too early to expect him to seek Baptism, nevertheless it was the first time since we were married that he accompanied me to Mass, something which had always been a dream for me. I did desire with all my heart that he be baptized, to the point of very often shedding tears of joy as he sat next to me at Mass. Sister Guadalupe and other friends in the church often encouraged me by telling me to pray, and promising to offer their prayers too. Eight men in that group of ten had already declared their decision to receive Baptism, and then so did my husband. That left only one who had not yet decided. It so happened that one time that man attended a gathering of ME couples without his wife and joined the two of us in a small group sharing. He was relieved and comforted by my husband’s sharing about his previous reservations. It seemed to be just what he needed to make that decisive jump. Ultimately all ten were baptized that following Easter Sunday; and the faith has been important to all of them, both young and old, throughout the past thirty years. I will never forget the smile on Fr. Donnon’s face that day. Our son, at the time in fourth year grammar school expressed his joy by simply saying, “Yes!” And I concurred. My husband said, “I asked for Baptism in order to experience peace in the family.” I am very grateful to many priests, sisters, couples and individuals for all their prayers and encouragement throughout the years of that journey to faith that my husband and I have made. It is especially the grace of experiencing ME that resulted in our receiving the Sacrament of Marriage and becoming a couple with the same values and seeking the same goal. Husband After about five years, we had to take leave of that crazily joyful parish and go to Bangkok where we met fellow Japanese Catholics who gathered frequently to share the faith. We were encouraged from time to time by priests and bishops coming from Japan who offered Mass for us. Being a government worker, I have been transferred a total of seventeen times. Wherever we would go my wife would end up being surrounded by friends from the churches. So that despite all the changes, she was able to cope because of having many friends with the same faith and ideals. I am grateful for that too. Wife As my husband has said, five years after his Baptism he was transferred to Thailand. With Fr. Donnon’s permission we took with us a banner made by Sister Guadalupe (each week she drew one as a pictorial explanation of the theme of the Gospel and homily of that Sunday). This one happened to be a drawing of the blessed Mother with her arms outstretched over the church in Ota, We hung it on the wall in our parlor there. Coincidentally, Fr. Lucian Mulhern, who had built that church in Ota, when he would come to Bangkok, often visited us to say Mass in our home, for Catholic people living in Bangkok. That banner is now in the “Mori House” in Tsukuba, Ibaraki Prefecture. The influence of the graces we have received as a couple and as a family, far from waning with the passing years, continue and seem to grow progressively stronger. There is no doubt in our minds that this is an immeasurable gift from the Lord. Husband One outstanding grace for me that has its origin in my being baptized as a result of attending a ME, was the opportunity to go to Rome to attend the Beatification of Fr. Damiano. On this trip to Europe we also went to Brussels, Paris and Lourdes. During our first night in Lourdes I had a dream of an apparition so enwrapped in light and darkness that it was unclear to me whether it was Jesus or Mary. What was clear to me is that I have come a long way from being a Sunday morning taxi driver to one transformed into a believer; and moreover, one who could accept the presence of either Jesus or Mary in an apparition – if only in a dream. The graces from ME continue in our marriage and the life of our family 24

FIRES Encounter Testimonials (Japanese)

Let society turn from accep1ng abor1on to promo1ng “Culture of Life” アメリカで始まったMarch for Life⽇本で4回⽬のマーチフォーライフ ■全⽶50州でAbortion (堕胎) は合法であるとした1973年1⽉22⽇の衝撃の最⾼裁判決。

Clear Thinking About Crucial Issues
Dear Friends, There are crucial issues that face us today: abortion, aids, bioethics, birth control, when life begins, population concerns, post-abortion healing, etc. But far too often our public debates are long on emotion and short on clear thinking. Along the way, respect for the dignity of human life gets lost in the rhetoric. Our purpose is to promote a “Culture of Life” in which human freedom will find its authentic meaning by joining forces with truth, life and love. This culture “needs new lifestyles which will show respect for the dignity of every individual, especially the weakest, and which will recognize the value of human sexuality in the development of the person.” (Evangelium Vitae) This website hopes to help change the present situation by providing clear thinking about these most crucial issues. The project was started on September 1st, 2000. We are blessed by the support of serious scholars and good people who are donating their writings. We hope that Oblates and interested visitors will feel inspired to contribute their own well–reasoned writings and research papers. Accessibility We are committed to being as accessible to as many different visitors as possible, including people with various disabilities. We support and follow the Accessibilty Guidelines drafted by the Web Accessability Initiative of the W3C. We invite all responses to the site and are especially interesed in hearing from visitors using assistive technologies such as screen and braille readers. OMI The Oblate Missionaries of Mary Immaculate are a group of Catholic Priests and Brothers who belong to The Congregation of Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate (0MI). They strive to bring all people especially the poor to full consciousness of their dignity as human beings. They try to hear and make heard the clamour of the voiceless. Action for justice is an integral part of their work, trying to change all that is a cause of oppression and poverty. In this way, they share in creating a society which recognizes the dignity of the human person from its very beginning to its very end. Your comments, ideas and materials are essential to the success of this project. We look forward to hearing from you. Thank you.

Sexual Exploitation of Children in Japan Father Jerry Novotny, OMI, Japan
Dear Friends for Life: The current population of Japan is a little over 127 million, of which approximately 25 million are children under the age of 18. According to the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, a child is defined as anyone under the age of 18. Japan is a major destination, source, and transit country for children subjected to sex trafficking and sexual exploitation. - Continue reading here. 31

Multiculturalism and Marxism Frank Ellis, American Renaissance, November 1999
“Today, of course, we are made to believe that diversity is strength, perversity is virtue, success is oppression, and that relentlessly repeating these ideas over and over is “tolerance and diversity.” Indeed, the multicultural revolution works subversion everywhere, just as Communist revolutions did: judicial activism undermines the rule of law; “tolerance” weakens the conditions that make real tolerance possible; universities, which should be havens of free inquiry, practice censorship that rivals that of the Soviets. At the same time, we find a relentless drive for equality: the Bible, Shakespeare, and rap “music” are just texts with “equally valid perspectives;” deviant and criminal behavior is an “alternative life-style.” Today, Dostoevsky’s Crime and Punishment would have to be repackaged as Crime and Counseling.” - Read more here. - Frank Ellis, American Renaissance, November 1999

Cultural Marxism Is Destroying America - Moses Apostaticus, The Daily Caller
“Cultural Marxism is the Marxist dialectic fused with Freudian theory and applied to identity and culture. Like all forms of Marxism, it is based upon categorizing people into abstract groups and then creating a narrative of historical oppression between them. The strategy of Marxists is always to cultivate a victimized group and then convince its members that solidarity is required against the oppressors. This creates resentment and hatred and is how Marxist ideologies fulfill their revolutionary objectives. The cultural Marxism that our societies are infected with is a particularly Western phenomenon. After the Russian Revolution of 1917, Marxists in Europe believed that the dictatorship of the proletariat was at hand. They were wrong. The revolution failed to spread. In despair, and in one of Mussolini’s prisons, a young Italian socialist Antonio Gramsci wrote that the problem was the Christian bedrock of Western European cultures. He encouraged Marxists to develop a fifth column inside these countries to destroy the foundations of Western cultures. NEW EVANGELIZATION WITH THE SAINTS Archbishop Nowak: saints prove that Christ appeals to all hearts At the solemn crowning of the statue of Our Lady of the Rosary in St Peter's Church at Gravesano in Lugano, Switzerland, on 4 March 2001, Archbishop Edward Nowak, titular Archbishop of Luni and Secretary of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, answered questions about the great number of beatifications and canonizations in the last twenty years. The priests and faithful wondered why there should be so many. Here is a translation of their questions and of Archbishop Nowak's answers. Q: Beatifications and canonizations have become one of the most visible ecclesial phenomena of John Paul II's pontificate. What is the connection of this emphasis on holiness and the work of the new evangelization? Archbishop Nowak: Before answering this question, I should like to give you precise information. Since the beginning of Pope John Paul's pontificate, the Congregation for the Causes of Saints has worked on more than 1,600 beatifications and canonizations, 1,675 in all. The Holy Father has canonized 446 blesseds at 41 ceremonies and beatified 1,229 servants of God at 124 ceremonies. Read more here. 50

Saintly Obedience trumps Divisive Revolt Contrasting the lives of two saints and a rebel
St. Peter Damian (1007 - 1072) Background • 500 years before Martin Luther • Rampant Church abuses • Reformed the Catholic Church by removing abuses e.g. homosexual acts between the clergy • Stayed obedient to the Church in spite of the rampant abuses • Was a learned scholar • Had a cruel childhood (abusive family members) • Rose to be a Cardinal though he desired to remain a simple monk. • Hus legacy was to heal the Church of its divisions and bring unity • Became a Saint
Martin Luther (1483 - 1546) Background • 500th Anniversary Revolt • Rampant Church abuses • Revolted against the Catholic Church by attacking abuses e.g. sale of indulgences • Rejected obedience to the Church, & excommunicated • Was a learned scholar • Had a cruel childhood (abusive parents) • Left his Augustinian Order, married and had a family • Left a legacy of over 33,000 Protestant denominations today separated from the Catholic Church
St. Magadelena of Nagasaki (1612 - 1634) Background • 100 years after Martin Luther • Persecution against the Church • Provided courageous support to Augustinian friars in Japan, four of whom were martyred. • Stayed obedient to the Church in spite of great danger • Was studying to be a nun • Had a cruel childhood (her parents were martyred) • Was a lay Augustinian sister, sought to be a Dominican sister • After 13 days of torture was martyred becoming an inspiration for Christians in Japan. • Became a Saint
Breathtaking Irony 500
Luther, an Augustinian friar, needed only to look at, by his time, the 500 year old example of Saint Peter Damian and how this saint had battled the vices of the Church and thereby could have chosen to remain within the Church to heal the abuses. Luther chose not to do so. Saint Magdalena of Nagasaki, an Augustinian lay sister, over a hundred years after Luther's revolt, out of her deep love for Christ and His Church, at the young age of 23, chose martyrdom. How ironic! - Dayly Knightly 58

MILITIAE SPIRITUALI - Spiritual Warfare
Cardinal Müller: Luther’s reform was ‘against the Holy Spirit’ LifeSite provides a full translation of Cardinal Muller's article on the Protestant Reformation. ROME, October 25, 2017 (LifeSiteNews) — Luther’s so-called reform was not an “event of the Holy Spirit,” and we should not “change history” or “falsify what happened 500 years ago and the disastrous effect it had” for the sake of “good relations,” Cardinal Gerhard Müller, former Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, has said. In an article published in the Italian Catholic Journal, La Nuova Bussola, the German cardinal said of Luther’s movement: “From the point of view of the doctrine of the Church it wasn’t a reform at all but rather a revolution, that is, a total change of the foundations of the Catholic Faith.” Cardinal Müller’s statements come five days after Bishop Nunzio Galantino, secretary general of the Italian Bishops Conference, praised Luther at a conference sponsored by the Pontifical Lateran University, saying: “The Reformation initiated by Martin Luther 500 years ago was an event of the Holy Spirit.” The conference, held at the Lateran on October 18-19, was entitled: “Passion for God. Spirituality and theology of the Reform 500 years after its dawn.” Here below LifeSite offers its readers a full English translation of Cardinal Müller’s article, with the kind permission of La Nuova Bussola. LUTHER? NOT A REFORM BUT A REVOLUTION by Gerhard L. Müller There is great confusion today when we talk about Luther, and it needs to be said clearly that from the point of view of dogmatic theology, from the point of view of the doctrine of the Church, it wasn’t a reform at all but rather a revolution, that is, a total change of the foundations of the Catholic Faith. It is not realistic to argue that [Luther’s] intention was only to fight against abuses of indulgences or the sins of the Renaissance Church. Abuses and evil actions have always existed in the Church, not only during the Renaissance, and they still exist today. We are the holy Church because of the God’s grace and the Sacraments, but all the men of the Church are sinners, they all need forgiveness, contrition, and repentance. This distinction is very important. And in the book written by Luther in 1520, “De captivitate Babylonica ecclesiae,” it is absolutely clear that Luther has left behind all of the principles of the Catholic Faith, Sacred Scripture, the Apostolic Tradition, the magisterium of the Pope and the Councils, and of the episcopate. In this sense, he upended the concept of the homogeneous development of Christian doctrine as 80
MILITIAE SPIRITUALI - Spiritual Warfare explained in the Middle Ages, even denying that a sacrament is an efficacious sign of the grace contained therein. He replaced this objective efficacy of the sacraments with a subjective faith. Here, Luther abolished five sacraments, and he also denied the Eucharist: the sacrificial character of the sacrament of the Eucharist, and the real conversion of the substance of bread and wine into the substance of the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ. Furthermore, he called the sacrament of episcopal ordination, the sacrament of Orders, an invention of the Pope — whom he called the Antichrist — and not part of the Church of Jesus Christ. Instead, we say that the sacramental hierarchy, in communion with the successor of Peter, is an essential element of the Catholic Church, and not only a principle of a human organization. That is why we cannot accept Luther’s reform being called a reform of the Church in a Catholic sense. Catholic reform is a renewal of faith lived in grace, in the renewal of customs, of ethics, a spiritual and moral renewal of Christians; not a new foundation, not a new Church. It is therefore unacceptable to assert that Luther’s reform “was an event of the Holy Spirit.” On the contrary, it was against the Holy Spirit. Because the Holy Spirit helps the Church to maintain her continuity through the Church’s magisterium, above all in the service of the Petrine ministry: on Peter has Jesus founded His Church (Mt 16:18), which is “the Church of the living God, the pillar and bulwark of the truth” (1Tim 3:15). The Holy Spirit does not contradict Himself. We hear so many voices speaking too enthusiastically about Luther, not knowing exactly his theology, his polemics and the disastrous effect of this movement which destroyed the unity of millions of Christians with the Catholic Church. We cannot evaluate positively his good will, the lucid explanation of the shared mysteries of faith but not his statements against the Catholic Faith, especially with regard to the sacraments and hierarchical-apostolic structure of the Church. Nor is it correct to assert that Luther initially had good intentions, meaning by this that it was the rigid attitude of the Church that pushed him down the wrong road. This is not true: Luther was intent on fighting against the selling of indulgences, but the goal was not indulgences as such, but as an element of the Sacrament of Penance. Nor is it true that the Church refused to dialogue: Luther first had a dispute with John Eck; then the Pope sent Cardinal Gaetano as a liaison to talk to him. We can discuss the methods, but when it comes to the substance of the doctrine, it must be stated that the authority of the Church did not make mistakes. Otherwise, one must argue that, for a thousand years, the Church has taught errors regarding the faith, when we know — and this is an essential element of doctrine — that the Church can not err in the transmission of salvation in the sacraments. One should not confuse personal mistakes and the sins of people in the Church with errors in doctrine and the sacraments. Those who do this believe that the Church is only an organization comprised of men and deny the principle that Jesus himself founded His Church and protects her in the transmission of the faith and grace in the sacraments through the Holy Spirit. His Church is not a merely human organization: it is the body of Christ, where the infallibility of the Council and the Pope exists in precisely described ways. All of the councils speak of the infallibility of the Magisterium, in setting forth the Catholic faith. Amid today’s confusion, in many people this reality has been overturned: they believe the Pope is infallible when he speaks privately, but then when the Popes throughout history have set forth the Catholic faith, they say it is fallible. Of course, 500 years have passed. It’s no longer the time for polemics but for seeking reconciliation: but not at the expense of truth. One should not create confusion. While on the one hand, we must be able to grasp the effectiveness of the Holy Spirit in these other non-Catholic Christians who have good will, and who have not personally committed this sin of separation from the Church, on the other we cannot change history, and what happened 500 years ago. It’s one thing to want to have good relations with non-Catholic Christians today, in order to bring us closer to a full communion with the Catholic hierarchy and with the acceptance of the Apostolic Tradition according to Catholic doctrine. It’s quite another thing to misunderstand or falsify what happened 500 years ago and the disastrous effect it had. An effect contrary to the will of God: “… that they may all be one; even as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be in us, so that the world may believe that thou has sent me” (Jn 17:21). Pope's Speech to the General Assembly of the Pontifical Academy for Life, Oct 5th 2017 [Excerpt] "In summary, a real cultural revolution is on the horizon of history in our time. And the Church must take the lead. First and foremost, however, we must honestly recognize what is holding us back and what is lacking. The subordination that, sadly, has marked the history of women must be definitively abandoned. The ethos of peoples must accept a new beginning so that it can create a new culture of identity and difference. The recent proposals for restoring the dignity of the person by radically eliminating any difference between the sexes, and, as a result, the covenant between man and woman, is not right. Rather than opposing negative interpretations of sexual difference that eliminate the value of that difference for human dignity, these proposals would simply eliminate this difference by proposing techniques and practices that make difference irrelevant to human development and to human relationships. But a "neuter" utopia removes both the human dignity of sexual difference and the personal aspect of the generation and transmission of life. The biological and psychological manipulation of sexual difference, which biomedical technology now presents as a simple matter of personal choice—which it is not!— risks eliminating the source of energy that nourishes the covenant between man and woman and makes it creative and fruitful." Magisterium on Lay Faithful In the last century, the Church carefully analysed the foundations of the vocation and the mission of the lay faithful in the Church and in the world, gathering a rich harvest from the “promotion of the laity whose seed was already sown in the nineteenth century. The teachings of the Second Vatican Council gave a strong impulse to the deepening of this theme, offering wisdom that, since then, has become indispensable in the evolution of the theology of the laity. Know Your Faith
Catechism of the Catholic Church You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor PART THREE LIFE IN CHRIST SECTION TWO THE TEN COMMANDMENTS CHAPTER TWO "YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF" ARTICLE 8 THE EIGHTH COMMANDMENT You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.253 It was said to the men of old, "You shall not swear falsely, but shall perform to the Lord what you have sworn."254 2464 The eighth commandment forbids misrepresenting the truth in our relations with others. This moral prescription flows from the vocation of the holy people to bear witness to their God who is the truth and wills the truth. Offenses against the truth express by word or deed a refusal to commit oneself to moral uprightness: they are fundamental infidelities to God and, in this sense, they undermine the foundations of the covenant. I. LIVING IN THE TRUTH 2465 The Old Testament attests that God is the source of all truth. His Word is truth. His Law is truth. His "faithfulness endures to all generations."255 Since God is "true," the members of his people are called to live in the truth.256 2466 In Jesus Christ, the whole of God's truth has been made manifest. "Full of grace and truth," he came as the "light of the world," he is the Truth.257 "Whoever believes in me may not remain in darkness."258 The disciple of Jesus continues in his word so as to know "the truth [that] will make you free" and that sanctifies.259 To follow Jesus is to live in "the Spirit of truth," whom the Father sends in his name and who leads "into all the truth."260 To his disciples Jesus teaches the unconditional love of truth: "Let what you say be simply 'Yes or No.'"261 2467 Man tends by nature toward the truth. He is obliged to honor and bear witness to it: "It is in accordance with their dignity that all men, because they are persons . . . are both impelled by their nature and bound by a moral obligation to seek the truth, especially religious truth. They are also bound to adhere to the truth once they come to know it and direct their whole lives in accordance with the demands of truth."262 2468 Truth as uprightness in human action and speech is called truthfulness, sincerity, or candor. Truth or truthfulness is the virtue which consists in showing oneself true in deeds and truthful in words, and in guarding against duplicity, dissimulation, and hypocrisy. 2469 "Men could not live with one another if there were not mutual confidence that they were being truthful to one another."263 The virtue of truth gives another his just due. Truthfulness keeps to the just mean between what ought to be expressed and what ought to be kept secret: it entails honesty and discretion. In justice, "as a matter of honor, one man owes it to another to manifest the truth."264 2470 The disciple of Christ consents to "live in the truth," that is, in the simplicity of a life in conformity with the Lord's example, abiding in his truth. "If we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not live according to the truth."265 110
Know Your Faith II. TO BEAR WITNESS TO THE TRUTH 2471 Before Pilate, Christ proclaims that he "has come into the world, to bear witness to the truth."266 The Christian is not to "be ashamed then of testifying to our Lord."267 In situations that require witness to the faith, the Christian must profess it without equivocation, after the example of St. Paul before his judges. We must keep "a clear conscience toward God and toward men."268 2472 The duty of Christians to take part in the life of the Church impels them to act as witnesses of the Gospel and of the obligations that flow from it. This witness is a transmission of the faith in words and deeds. Witness is an act of justice that establishes the truth or makes it known.269 All Christians by the example of their lives and the witness of their word, wherever they live, have an obligation to manifest the new man which they have put on in Baptism and to reveal the power of the Holy Spirit by whom they were strengthened at Confirmation. 270 2473 Martyrdom is the supreme witness given to the truth of the faith: it means bearing witness even unto death. The martyr bears witness to Christ who died and rose, to whom he is united by charity. He bears witness to the truth of the faith and of Christian doctrine. He endures death through an act of fortitude. "Let me become the food of the beasts, through whom it will be given me to reach God."271 2474 The Church has painstakingly collected the records of those who persevered to the end in witnessing to their faith. These are the acts of the Martyrs. They form the archives of truth written in letters of blood: Neither the pleasures of the world nor the kingdoms of this age will be of any use to me. It is better for me to die [in order to unite myself] to Christ Jesus than to reign over the ends of the earth. I seek him who died for us; I desire him who rose for us. My birth is approaching. . .272 I bless you for having judged me worthy from this day and this hour to be counted among your martyrs. . . . You have kept your promise, God of faithfulness and truth. For this reason and for everything, I praise you, I bless you, I glorify you through the eternal and heavenly High Priest, Jesus Christ, your beloved Son. Through him, who is with you and the Holy Spirit, may glory be given to you, now and in the ages to come. Amen.273 III. OFFENSES AGAINST TRUTH 2475 Christ's disciples have "put on the new man, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness."274 By "putting away falsehood," they are to "put away all malice and all guile and insincerity and envy and all slander."275 2476 False witness and perjury. When it is made publicly, a statement contrary to the truth takes on a particular gravity. In court it becomes false witness.276 When it is under oath, it is perjury. Acts such as these contribute to condemnation of the innocent, exoneration of the guilty, or the increased punishment of the accused.277 They gravely compromise the exercise of justice and the fairness of judicial decisions. 2477 Respect for the reputation of persons forbids every attitude and word likely to cause them unjust injury.278 He becomes guilty: - of rash judgment who, even tacitly, assumes as true, without sufficient foundation, the moral fault of a neighbor; - of detraction who, without objectively valid reason, discloses another's faults and failings to persons who did not know them;279 - of calumny who, by remarks contrary to the truth, harms the reputation of others and gives occasion for false judgments concerning them. 111
Know Your Faith 2478 To avoid rash judgment, everyone should be careful to interpret insofar as possible his neighbor's thoughts, words, and deeds in a favorable way: Every good Christian ought to be more ready to give a favorable interpretation to another's statement than to condemn it. But if he cannot do so, let him ask how the other understands it. And if the latter understands it badly, let the former correct him with love. If that does not suffice, let the Christian try all suitable ways to bring the other to a correct interpretation so that he may be saved.280 2479 Detraction and calumny destroy the reputation and honor of one's neighbor. Honor is the social witness given to human dignity, and everyone enjoys a natural right to the honor of his name and reputation and to respect. Thus, detraction and calumny offend against the virtues of justice and charity. 2480 Every word or attitude is forbidden which by flattery, adulation, or complaisance encourages and confirms another in malicious acts and perverse conduct. Adulation is a grave fault if it makes one an accomplice in another's vices or grave sins. Neither the desire to be of service nor friendship justifies duplicitous speech. Adulation is a venial sin when it only seeks to be agreeable, to avoid evil, to meet a need, or to obtain legitimate advantages. 2481 Boasting or bragging is an offense against truth. So is irony aimed at disparaging someone by maliciously caricaturing some aspect of his behavior. 2482 "A lie consists in speaking a falsehood with the intention of deceiving."281 The Lord denounces lying as the work of the devil: "You are of your father the devil, . . . there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks according to his own nature, for he is a liar and the father of lies."282 2483 Lying is the most direct offense against the truth. To lie is to speak or act against the truth in order to lead someone into error. By injuring man's relation to truth and to his neighbor, a lie offends against the fundamental relation of man and of his word to the Lord. 2484 The gravity of a lie is measured against the nature of the truth it deforms, the circumstances, the intentions of the one who lies, and the harm suffered by its victims. If a lie in itself only constitutes a venial sin, it becomes mortal when it does grave injury to the virtues of justice and charity. 2485 By its very nature, lying is to be condemned. It is a profanation of speech, whereas the purpose of speech is to communicate known truth to others. The deliberate intention of leading a neighbor into error by saying things contrary to the truth constitutes a failure in justice and charity. The culpability is greater when the intention of deceiving entails the risk of deadly consequences for those who are led astray. 2486 Since it violates the virtue of truthfulness, a lie does real violence to another. It affects his ability to know, which is a condition of every judgment and decision. It contains the seed of discord and all consequent evils. Lying is destructive of society; it undermines trust among men and tears apart the fabric of social relationships. 2487 Every offense committed against justice and truth entails the duty of reparation, even if its author has been forgiven. When it is impossible publicly to make reparation for a wrong, it must be made secretly. If someone who has suffered harm cannot be directly compensated, he must be given moral satisfaction in the name of charity. This duty of reparation also concerns offenses against another's reputation. This reparation, moral and sometimes material, must be evaluated in terms of the extent of the damage inflicted. It obliges in conscience. IV. RESPECT FOR THE TRUTH 2488 The right to the communication of the truth is not unconditional. Everyone must conform his life to the Gospel precept of fraternal love. This requires us in concrete situations to judge whether or not it is appropriate to reveal the truth to someone who asks for it. 2489 Charity and respect for the truth should dictate the response to every request for information or communication. The good and safety of others, respect for privacy, and the common good are sufficient reasons for being silent about what ought not be known or for making use of a discreet language. The duty to avoid scandal often commands strict discretion. No one is bound to reveal the truth to someone who does not have the right to know it.283 2490 The secret of the sacrament of reconciliation is sacred, and cannot be violated under any pretext. "The 112
Know Your Faith sacramental seal is inviolable; therefore, it is a crime for a confessor in any way to betray a penitent by word or in any other manner or for any reason."284 2491 Professional secrets - for example, those of political office holders, soldiers, physicians, and lawyers - or confidential information given under the seal of secrecy must be kept, save in exceptional cases where keeping the secret is bound to cause very grave harm to the one who confided it, to the one who received it or to a third party, and where the very grave harm can be avoided only by divulging the truth. Even if not confided under the seal of secrecy, private information prejudicial to another is not to be divulged without a grave and proportionate reason. 2492 Everyone should observe an appropriate reserve concerning persons' private lives. Those in charge of communications should maintain a fair balance between the requirements of the common good and respect for individual rights. Interference by the media in the private lives of persons engaged in political or public activity is to be condemned to the extent that it infringes upon their privacy and freedom. V. THE USE OF THE SOCIAL COMMUNICATIONS MEDIA 2493 Within modern society the communications media play a major role in information, cultural promotion, and formation. This role is increasing, as a result of technological progress, the extent and diversity of the news transmitted, and the influence exercised on public opinion. 2494 The information provided by the media is at the service of the common good.285 Society has a right to information based on truth, freedom, justice, and solidarity: The proper exercise of this right demands that the content of the communication be true and - within the limits set by justice and charity - complete. Further, it should be communicated honestly and properly. This means that in the gathering and in the publication of news, the moral law and the legitimate rights and dignity of man should be upheld.286 2495 "It is necessary that all members of society meet the demands of justice and charity in this domain. They should help, through the means of social communication, in the formation and diffusion of sound public opinion."287 Solidarity is a consequence of genuine and right communication and the free circulation of ideas that further knowledge and respect for others. 2496 The means of social communication (especially the mass media) can give rise to a certain passivity among users, making them less than vigilant consumers of what is said or shown. Users should practice moderation and discipline in their approach to the mass media. They will want to form enlightened and correct consciences the more easily to resist unwholesome influences. 2497 By the very nature of their profession, journalists have an obligation to serve the truth and not offend against charity in disseminating information. They should strive to respect, with equal care, the nature of the facts and the limits of critical judgment concerning individuals. They should not stoop to defamation. 2498 "Civil authorities have particular responsibilities in this field because of the common good. . . . It is for the civil authority . . . to defend and safeguard a true and just freedom of information."288 By promulgating laws and overseeing their application, public authorities should ensure that "public morality and social progress are not gravely endangered" through misuse of the media.289 Civil authorities should punish any violation of the rights of individuals to their reputation and privacy. They should give timely and reliable reports concerning the general good or respond to the well-founded concerns of the people. Nothing can justify recourse to disinformation for manipulating public opinion through the media. Interventions by public authority should avoid injuring the freedom of individuals or groups. 2499 Moral judgment must condemn the plague of totalitarian states which systematically falsify the truth, exercise political control of opinion through the media, manipulate defendants and witnesses at public trials, and imagine that they secure their tyranny by strangling and repressing everything they consider "thought crimes." VI. TRUTH, BEAUTY, AND SACRED ART 2500 The practice of goodness is accompanied by spontaneous spiritual joy and moral beauty. Likewise, 113
Know Your Faith truth carries with it the joy and splendor of spiritual beauty. Truth is beautiful in itself. Truth in words, the rational expression of the knowledge of created and uncreated reality, is necessary to man, who is endowed with intellect. But truth can also find other complementary forms of human expression, above all when it is a matter of evoking what is beyond words: the depths of the human heart, the exaltations of the soul, the mystery of God. Even before revealing himself to man in words of truth, God reveals himself to him through the universal language of creation, the work of his Word, of his wisdom: the order and harmony of the cosmos-which both the child and the scientist discover-"from the greatness and beauty of created things comes a corresponding perception of their Creator," "for the author of beauty created them."290 [Wisdom] is a breath of the power of God, and a pure emanation of the glory of the Almighty; therefore nothing defiled gains entrance into her. For she is a reflection of eternal light, a spotless mirror of the working of God, and an image of his goodness.291 For [wisdom] is more beautiful than the sun, and excels every constellation of the stars. Compared with the light she is found to be superior, for it is succeeded by the night, but against wisdom evil does not prevail.292 I became enamored of her beauty.293 2501 Created "in the image of God,"294 man also expresses the truth of his relationship with God the Creator by the beauty of his artistic works. Indeed, art is a distinctively human form of expression; beyond the search for the necessities of life which is common to all living creatures, art is a freely given superabundance of the human being's inner riches. Arising from talent given by the Creator and from man's own effort, art is a form of practical wisdom, uniting knowledge and skill,295 to give form to the truth of reality in a language accessible to sight or hearing. To the extent that it is inspired by truth and love of beings, art bears a certain likeness to God's activity in what he has created. Like any other human activity, art is not an absolute end in itself, but is ordered to and ennobled by the ultimate end of man.296 2502 Sacred art is true and beautiful when its form corresponds to its particular vocation: evoking and glorifying, in faith and adoration, the transcendent mystery of God - the surpassing invisible beauty of truth and love visible in Christ, who "reflects the glory of God and bears the very stamp of his nature," in whom "the whole fullness of deity dwells bodily."297 This spiritual beauty of God is reflected in the most holy Virgin Mother of God, the angels, and saints. Genuine sacred art draws man to adoration, to prayer, and to the love of God, Creator and Savior, the Holy One and Sanctifier. 2503 For this reason bishops, personally or through delegates, should see to the promotion of sacred art, old and new, in all its forms and, with the same religious care, remove from the liturgy and from places of worship everything which is not in conformity with the truth of faith and the authentic beauty of sacred art.298 IN BRIEF 2504 "You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor" (Ex 20:16). Christ's disciples have "put on the new man, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness" (Eph 4:24). 2505 Truth or truthfulness is the virtue which consists in showing oneself true in deeds and truthful in words, and guarding against duplicity, dissimulation, and hypocrisy. 2506 The Christian is not to "be ashamed of testifying to our Lord" (2 Tim 1:8) in deed and word. Martyrdom is the supreme witness given to the truth of the faith. 2507 Respect for the reputation and honor of persons forbids all detraction and calumny in word or attitude. 2508 Lying consists in saying what is false with the intention of deceiving one's neighbor. 2509 An offense committed against the truth requires reparation. 2510 The golden rule helps one discern, in concrete situations, whether or not it would be appropriate to reveal the truth to someone who asks for it. 2511 "The sacramental seal is inviolable" (CIC, can. 983 ยง 1). Professional secrets must be kept. Confidences prejudicial to another are not to be divulged. 2512 Society has a right to information based on truth, freedom, and justice. One should practice moderation and discipline in the use of the social communications media. 2513 The fine arts, but above all sacred art, "of their nature are directed toward expressing in some way the infinite beauty of God in works made by human hands. Their dedication to the increase of God's praise and of his glory is more complete, the more exclusively they are devoted to turning men's minds devoutly toward God" (SC 122). 114

nspiration 4 Drive Away Adversity
In today’s collect we ask God to free us from those things which shackle us down, preventing us from achieving our proper end. We face many physical, psychological and spiritual adversities, but our greatest adversary is most likely our own self. We can’t pursue virtue without cutting out vice. The Church always exorcises before baptizing. We only grow in sanctity if we stop sinning. Catholics shouldn’t see freedom negatively (freedom from restraints), but positively, that is being free for all that is good (rightly ordered as per God’s law). What is hindering you from pursuing God more fully in your vocation? Ask to be freed from it, receive it well when you are, and use your freedom to pursue God and His will. - Sensus Fidelium
