Cardinal against Cardinal – Bishop against Bishop Most people following international Catholic News and events cannot help but notice the increasing trend of internal disputes and opposing positions taken by the princes of our Church, the cardinals and bishops. Be they issues from the natural family and marriage, abortion, clerical gay sex, same-sex marriage, sex-education for children, reproductive rights, population control, global warming and local translation of sacred scripture, one cannot help but sense a quickening is taking place. Yet did Our Lady not warn is in Fatima and Akita that internal disputes and false teachings would occur from within the Church? To witness cardinal against cardinal and bishop against bishop is a ghastly, egregious and deeply wounding experience not only for lay-people and clerics alike but surely a gravely offensive sin against God. Yet the Catholic Church has been here before. Over 2,000 years of existence of the Church includes persecutions, heresies, betrayal, corruption and deceit, all of which have been overcome through the protection of Our Lady and the Holy Spirit. Fervent Catholics today feel deeply dismayed, confused and lost in this current climate of chaos in the Church. It is easy to languish in despair. But we must look up and keep the faith. We are being tested. Satan and his agents seem to be in the ascendency. They have planted the seeds of their deceit and destructive ideologies more significantly now than ever before. We must continue to call on Our Lady and the Holy Spirit for help and protection against modernist evils, as did our past generations. October 7th is the day of ‘Our Lady of the Rosary’ and recalls the victory of Our Lady and Catholic forces at the Battle of Lepanto over the perilous threat to Christendom in 1571. Equally a thousand years ago, the Catholic Church faced a major threat when it experienced the onslaught of gay sex between its clerics, a dire situation then and a situation not unlike the present circumstances being experienced today. Saint Peter Damian (1007 – 1072), doctor of the Church and author of ‘Book of Gomorrah’ was a true reformer who forcibly faced down and condemned immoral sexual acts such as sodomy between the clerics of his day. This saint was a true fearless knight of the Church who speaks to us today across ten centuries by his example of combatting grave sin within the Church. It is uncanny how current controversies hark back to similar dark periods of the Church in the past. Readers are recommended to read this saint’s short book, ‘Book of Gomorrah’ to put such situations in perspective. Though all seems so dark and despairing for faithful Catholics, we must remember that God is in charge. When evil exists it is but a temporary hold on the world and people. Time and time again throughout the history of the Catholic Church, divine intervention has come to rescue and restore Mother Church and her teachings. Today, in our modernist secular atheistic society with the ongoing internal disputes and false teachings boiling over publicly from within the Church it seems Christianity is sinking. Yet these are the times for the emergence of new heroes and knights, for brave clerics and laity alike to come together up and stand up to the tyranny and slavery of immoral ideology and behavior. We know ultimate victory is with God, yet still our faith is being tested now as much as it was by previous generations of Catholics. We are being tested as Job was tested. However, we must always remember that we are born and baptized into Christ and He is in us. Our Blessed Mother protects us. The Holy Spirit provides us with graces to overcome fear at the time we call out and pray for help. Archbishop Fulton Sheen lamented that he would not be around for the times we are facing today for he knew these were the times where fervent Catholics would truly be able to display real courage and love of God in the face of dire and unremitting evil and persecution. So today, put on your armour, though times are fearful, fervent Catholics should rejoice for we have the chance to share in the pain and passion of Christ’s persecution, to offer this as sacrifice with Christ’s sacrifice to God and to equally share in the knowledge that no matter the evil, deceit and sin in the world, there is resurrection, there is victory and that our Catholic Church and her flock, we Catholics, under the protection and care of Our Lady will overcome and be restored anew. 4

ORIAL

Special Feature - Vocations 2000 years ago, Christ in ascending and returning to God the Father, left us His One Holy Catholic Apostolic Church, His bride the Catholic Church. Our Church is one of magnificent grace, beauty and truth, the foundation for our journey back to God and our teacher and guide in our daily struggles in life. Our Blessed Mother Mary watches over Christ’s Church and is with us in both good and bad times. No matter what evil perpetrated against her whether by deceitful Satan or pagan secular agents, the Catholic Church has always prevailed and will always prevail. In those 2,000 years not only has the divine nature of God been evident through His saints, clergy and people but the Church has made major contributions to the World in science, medicine, education, law, equal rights, the arts, music and architecture. Yet today, the ‘labourers’ are few and many ‘sheep’ are scattered. A virulent toxic secularism exists in the world busily removing God from the public place, introducing vile pagan immoral ideologies and deceiving God’s people onto stray paths away from salvation. However, throughout the world we have prayer warriors in closed monasteries and orders praying for our salvation imploring God to forgive the transgressions of these times and to provide the graces we need to overcome the dangers and perils we face. Without these prayerful monasteries and indeed certain heroic clergy, we would be doomed. In this issue we highlight, through up to eleven articles, different monastic orders and clergy who are fighting for God and who spiritually protect us from harm through fervent prayer. The Church yet still needs more heroic clergy to expand the ranks that can take up this battle for the faith, that can become good shepherds and bring back the ‘lost sheep’ and that can re-establish the rightful role the Church must play in society. Thus we pray that the Holy Spirit will encourage faithful clergy throughout the world, inspire more vocations to the priesthood and to religious life and to give renewed strength to Christ’s Church, the Catholic Church, here on Earth.

FIRES ENCOUNTER - Japan

Hungarian government awards the Cardinal József Mindszenty medal for "two decades of supporting the nation" through the service of MECS/CFM/FIRES - 2016 trist, he himself a lawyer, etc. Within a short time the communist authorities noticed their regular meetings, and he was imprisoned for six months on the charge of organizing against the communist regime. It was not wise to let 3 year old Krisztina know what happened, lest she should talk about it in the kindergarten. Therefore her mother told her that her dad went to Japan. Thirty years later, at an ICCFM meeting held in Bangkok in 1998, Balazs and Krisztina met Fr Donnon Murray O.F.M. from Japan, for the first time. Through him the Lord gave us the opportunity for a service which has reached thousands of individuals, couples and families here in Hungary since 1999. At the Bangkok meeting we listened to a talk given by Fr. Donnon and Fr. Gabriel Calvo about FIRES. After their talk was over, we had a desire to go and talk to them. Fr. Donnon told us about the Encounters he presented in Japan, and we were quite enthused. Krisztina asked, “Father, would you be able to come to Hungary and introduce the Original ME there?” To our surprise, Fr. Donnon said yes. The following year, in 1999 he came to Hungary and introduced the Original ME OME). Then, for 7 consecutive years he came again and introduced each and every FIRES program. Another interesting “coincidence” was that when we invited Fr. Donnon to Hungary in Bangkok, a Slovakian couple stood nearby, and heard our conversation. Afterwards they too approached Fr. Donnon and invited him to neighboring Slovakia, where consequently all the FIRES programs were introduced and, just as in Hungary, have reached thousands of individuals, couples and families. Since 1999, we have regularly organized FIRES programs in Hungary: EE five times a year, OME, SADE, SE each twice a year, MR and SR once a year, and PE once every two years, with usually 20 to 40 participants. We work with five committed couples who help with the different programs, with five priests and Bishop Laszlo Biro, bishop for the Family, who is the coordinator for the PE. Having been able to translate and publish 3 books by Fr. Calvo, we have been able to get the FIRES message to more than 10.000 readers. We have countless vivencias from the FIRES programs. Some of them are included in this book written by the persons themselves – Gyorgy and Andi, Gabor and Tunde, Kalman and Vera, Imre and Zita. 23

FIRES ENCOUNTER - Japan We have personally witnessed their stories, and they are strong vivencias for us also, announcing the glory of God. Some other vivencias that stay with us: - Our trainings with future team members. These sharings have always been real encounters with God through the humility, honesty and confianza of the team persons. NB “Confianza” is another Spanish word widely used in the Encounters, because it has a special significance. It is translated into English by the word confidence. In the context of the Encounters, however, it has a much deeper meaning. Ideally it refers to a frame of mind wherein there is an intention to totally give oneself to another. - The Saturday night liturgies. So many times in the divine Presence presence, so many healings. We can never forget these most wonderful hours. - One outstanding memory is from a Sons and Daughters Retorno (SADR) presented by Fr. Donnon in 2005. During the Saturday night liturgy of this program the group members pray for one another. At the end of this prayer one group invited Fr. Donnon, who was sitting by himself, to sit on their chair to be prayed for. After the prayer he stood up to see that not only that particular group but all participants (about 35 people) were standing behind him praying for him, with those who could not reach him laying hands on the person in front to constitute a united praying community. - The changes of faces have always impressed us. The faces of participants arriving on Friday are quite different from the shining, smiling faces on Sunday. People are really changed, and not just for a weekend. - Another memorable face is that of a priest. At the end of the PE the priests renew their priestly vows. We will never forget the tears streaming down the cheeks of a particular priest while he was renewing his priestly promises: “Yes! I want to serve God’s people…” - We have also experienced many difficulties. Another book could be written on the ways the devil tries to discourage those who work for the kingdom of God. One time, after an Encounter that was very difficult and full of frustration, we told Fr. Gabriel about these difficulties, and he wrote: “Our calling is not to be successful but to be faithful”. - We always remember the thanksgiving Masses celebrated by Fr. Donnon at the end of the Encounters he presented. He opened our eyes to the heavenly “New Jerusalem”, where all those who have loved us and whom we love are present, where there is no need for the sun and the stars because God Himself is the Light. This sight remains in our hearts forever. The FIRES programs have indeed been very beneficial to many people in Hungary, but those who have benefited most are undoubtedly the two of us. Having been participants, organizers and teams for many FIRES programs has changed our life and powerfully turned us towards God. It is a consequence of the FIRES programs that we began to pray together as a couple. Our enthusiasm as organizers gradually changed, the main emphasis being now on prayer. The Retorno was important because we realized that God the Father has a plan for us, God the Son teaches us how to realize that plan, and God the Holy Spirit gives us the strength to carry it out. I (Balazs) have made it the basic theme of my personal prayer. It was also through an Encounter that praying the rosary came close to us indeed. Even if we are not part of the team, as much as possible we try to show our face at each Encounter program. These short visits are great opportunities for us to see how wonderfully our colleagues work; to see the participants; to have a short talk with the presenting priest and the host couple. We usually also pray together. One time during our visit at an EE, the priest invited us saying: “Guys, this is serious business. Let us go and pray the rosary.” We did, and it was an unforgettable prayerful time. Since then we, as a couple, have made the rosary our evening prayer. After 10 pm we are not usually capable of praying more than two decades, but it is a wonderful, quiet night prayer, which gives us a lot of strength. It was also through FIRES that we discovered the Bible. We heard at the Encounters for the first time in our lives that God speaks to us also personally through his Word. At first it was no more than a fact that we became aware of. It was at the 25th anniversary of FIRES, held in Rome in 2001, that we made the real commitment to read the Scripture daily. Since then we have experienced many times that the Lord does indeed guide us through the Scripture. Just one example: it is not always easy to cooperate in seeking unity. 24

FIRES ENCOUNTER - Japan Years ago, at a time of extreme difficulty in this regard we opened the Bible and read: “"Simon, three men are looking for you. So get up and go downstairs. Do not hesitate to go with them, for I have sent them." (Acts 10:19- 20). At that time, we were ready to give up in seeking unity with certain individuals whose values and intentions were quite different from ours. Reading that Scripture passage, we felt urged to carry on working together with each one of those people, instead of saying goodbye to them when cooperation was painful. That has yielded an abundance of good fruits in CFM, and even in FIRES. It was also through the Scripture that one of our helper couples accepted our invitation and became actively involved in FIRES. They feared they were too young to be a host couple. Opening the Scripture, they found: “Do not say, I’m only a child. You must go to everyone I send you to and say whatever I command you” (Jeremiah 1:7). Then they said yes, and they have been excellent organizers of EE ever since. Our marriage has been strengthened through FIRES. It is a “joint project” in our life, giving us the gift of common desires, hopes, difficulties and joys, which has greatly deepened our relationship. We have also benefited a great deal from FIRES with regard to our relationship with our kids. We have three teenage sons. The eldest has made two SADE’s, and wants to make each and every SADE from now on. We consider the greatest possible praise what he said after his first SADE: “I give my consent to your continuing your work with FIRES”. We learned from FIRES that love which is not expressed is not love at all. We make conscious efforts at expressing our love in the family. We have also realized how important reconciliation is; how important it is to ask for forgiveness even from our children, treating them not as inferiors but as persons of equal dignity. It happened years ago that I – Krisztina – got very angry with one of our sons. He was about ten years old. I told him off. He too got upset, and reacted angrily. It was an ugly scene, which hurt me a lot. Therefore in the evening I sat by his bedside and said to him: “I am sorry I was so impatient with you; the problem was that you, too, were impatient with me. See, we are very much alike. We have the same weakness.” Then he said proudly, with a radiant smile: “We have the same weakness!” Everything was settled, and we were both deeply touched by the joy of talking to one another as equals. Who knows what our present marriage and family would be like without FIRES; but we are absolutely certain that we are inestimably richer because of it. We cannot be thankful enough to the Lord for making it possible for us to become acquainted with Fr. Calvo and Fr. Donnon, and for offering us the opportunity to serve in FIRES, through which he has been able to draw us closer to HIM.

Gyorgy and Andi、Gabor and Tunde、Kalman and Vera、Imre and Zitaなどによって投稿され、 この本にも載せてあ ります。

FIRES 20th Anniversary , Hungary

Bologna – “I believe that some things must be clarified. The letter – and the attached dubia – were reflected on at length, for months, and were discussed at length among ourselves. For my part, they were prayed about at length before the Blessed Sacrament.” Cardinal Carlo Caffarra starts by saying this, before beginning a long conversation with Il Foglio on the now famous letter “of the four cardinals” sent to the Pope to ask him for clarification in relation to Amoris Laetitia, the exhortation which summed up the double Synod on the family, and which has unleashed much debate – not always with grace and elegance – [both] inside and outside the Vatican walls. “We were aware that the action we were taking was very serious. Our concerns were twofold. The first was not to scandalize the little ones in the faith. For us pastors, this is a fundamental obligation. The second concern was that no person, whether a believer or not a believer, should be able to find in the letter expressions that even remotely could appear in the slightest lacking in respect towards the Pope. The final text, therefore, is the fruit of quite a lot of revisions: texts [were] revised, rejected, corrected.” Having said all this, Caffarra enters into the matter. “What drove us to this action? A consideration of a general-structural nature and one of a contingent-circumstantial nature. Let us begin with the first. There exists for us cardinals a grave obligation to advise the Pope in the government of the Church. It is a duty, and duties oblige. Concerning [the consideration] of a more contingent nature, moreover, it is a fact – which only a blind man can deny – that there exists in the Church, a great confusion, uncertainty, and insecurity caused by some paragraphs of Amoris laetitia. MILITIAE SPIRITUALI - Spiritual Warfare

Cardinal Carlo Caffarra, archbishop emeritus of Bologna, speaking at the Rome Life Forum, May 19, 2017. (Edward Pentin photo)

Cardinal Caffarra: Satan is Hurling at God the “Ultimate and Terrible Challenge”

In a Rome speech, the Italian cardinal warned that societies are now facing a “frightful” war on marriage and the family but urged the faithful not to be afraid, to witness to Christ, as the victory is already won. - Edward Pentin, National Catholic Register

Satan is hurling at God “the ultimate and terrible challenge,” to show he is capable of constructing an “anti-creation” that mankind will be deceived into thinking is better than what God has created, Cardinal Carlo Caffarra has warned. The archbishop emeritus of Bologna said this decisive confrontation is taking place now, and is being fought primarily over marriage and the family — a prediction Sister Lucia made in a letter the Fatima visionary sent to him over 30 years ago. The cardinal was speaking May 19 to the Rome Life Forum, 100 life and family leaders from over 20 nations who had gathered near the Vatican to discuss the crisis in the Church and in the family, and the hope for renewal in Our Lady of Fatima. Cardinal Caffarra, who helped found the Pontifical John Paul II Institute for Studies on Marriage and the Family in 1981, began by explaining that human history has always been a tale of confrontation between two forces: “The force of attraction,” that is the wounded Heart of the Crucified Risen One, and the “power of Satan,” the father of lies, the “murderer from the beginning” who seeks to extinguish truth in the heart of man. This area of confrontation, the cardinal continued, is being fought in an interior and exterior dimension: within both the human heart and human culture. He made clear that the Lord’s force of attraction “can only take effect on those who ‘are from the truth’ — those “profoundly available to the Truth, who love the truth, who live in familiarity with it.” But “there is no truth” in Satan, he added, who seeks to kill truth in the heart of man by “inducing” him to 62

MILITIAE SPIRITUALI - Spiritual Warfare unbelief. He is constantly refusing the truth; his action in society is to oppose the truth. “Satan is this refusal,” the cardinal remarked. “He is this opposition.” Satan is therefore always working against the Lord’s strong force of attraction to Himself, seeking to “neutralize” it. And this battle within the human heart becomes manifest in society and culture, leading to “the culture of the truth and the culture of the lie.” Destroying two pillars of creation This confrontation, Cardinal Caffarra went on to explain, shows itself with “particular clarity” in two developments, the first being “the transformation” of the crime of abortion into a legal and subjective right. Legalized abortion “signifies calling what is good, evil, what is light, shadow.” It is a Satanic attempt, he said, to produce an “anti-Revelation,” to generate an “anti-creation.” The cardinal added that by ennobling the killing of humans, Satan has “laid the foundations for his ‘creation’: to remove from creation the image of God, to obscure His presence therein.” The second development showing the “culture of the lie” is the “ennoblement of homosexuality,” the cardinal said, which “in fact denies entirely the truth of marriage, the mind of God the Creator with regard to marriage.” Marriage has a “permanent structure” in the mind of God because the union of man and woman is the “human cooperation in the creative act of God,” Cardinal Caffarra said. For this reason, the elevation of abortion to a “subjective right” and equating a homosexual relationship to marriage represent the destruction of “two pillars of creation.” “At the root of this is the work of Satan, who wants to build an actual anti-creation,” Cardinal Caffarra said. “This is the ultimate and terrible challenge which Satan is hurling at God. ‘I am demonstrating to you that I am capable of constructing an alternative to your creation. And man will say: it is better in the alternative creation than in your creation.’” “This is the frightful strategy of the lie,” the cardinal continued, “constructed around a profound contempt for man.” He noted that man is not capable of “elevating himself to the splendor of the Truth” and so Satan continued to “tell him banalities about man” and that the Truth “does not exist.”

Christians must testify

To combat Satan’s lies, Cardinal Caffarra stressed that the faithful are called upon to testify: to “announce openly and publicly” through such actions as this weekend’s March for Life in Rome, and to proclaim divine Revelation, speaking in particular of the “Gospel of Life and Marriage,” and doing so “as if in a trial.” The alternative, he said, is to remain silent or saying something else, but at the same time, he stressed that should not be taken to mean that Christians should be “antipathetic to everyone.” The cardinal stressed that just as medicine “proposes the cure while excluding the illness,” so should we “love the sinner, but persecute the sin.” It would be a “terrible doctor,” he said, “who adopted an irenical attitude towards the disease.” Instead, the Christian should “hunt down the sin,” he said, “track it down in the hidden places of its lies, and condemn it, bringing to light its insubstantiality.” He concluded that “Christ is witness” and reassured those present of the words from the Gospel of John: “When I am lifted up from the earth, I will draw all people to myself.” In supplementary words after his talk, Cardinal Caffarra recalled the letter he received from Sister Lucia when he was facing trials in establishing the Pontifical John Paul II Institute for Studies on Marriage and the Family. He said he would “never forget” the last words of her letter, “words that are engraved in my heart,” in which Sister Lucia wrote “there will come a time when the decisive confrontation between the Kingdom of God and Satan will take place over marriage and the family.” He said she underscored that those who are going to work for marriage and the family “will undergo trials and tribulations” but added: “Do not fear, Our Lady has already crushed his head.” Cardinal Caffarra told the conference that his talk was “based on these words of Sister Lucia, and therefore on the conviction that what Sister Lucia said in those days are being fulfilled in these days of ours.” See the full text of the cardinal's talk here. 63

This decline in belief that Satan is a cunning adversary (2 Cor 11:3; 1 Pet 5:8) continues despite persistent reminders from Pope Francis about the reality of what the pontiff has often called, “The Prince of this World, ” and the “Father of Lies.” In his first papal homily on March 14, 2013, Pope Francis warned: “When we do not profess Jesus Christ, we profess the worldliness of the devil, a demonic worldliness.” ” In his book, On Heaven and Earth, then-Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio devoted an entire chapter to “The Devil,” warning that Satan’s fruits are “destruction, division, hatred and calumny.” For Pope Francis, Satan is real—not a myth or a symbol, or a story to keep us in line. Satan is a real creature who lurks among us in the world even today. In 2014, Pope Francis reminded Catholics that the life of every Christian is a constant battle against Satan—“just as Jesus, during his life, had to struggle against the devil and his many temptations… We too are tempted, we too are the target of attacks by the devil.” Drawing upon Scripture, Pope Francis recalled how Jesus’s first temptation by Satan was ‘almost like a seduction.” And earlier this year the Holy Father stated that “the serpent, the devil is shrewd: one cannot dialogue with the devil…” Read more here. - What the Devil?
