POPE PAUL VI SACERDOTALIS CAELIBATUS ENCYCLICAL OF POPE PAUL VI ON THE CELIBACY OF THE PRIEST JUNE 24, 1967
Invitation to the Laity
"97. Our invitation goes out specially to those lay people who seek God with greater earnestness and intensity, and strive after Christian perfection while living in the midst of their fellow men. By their devoted and warm friendship they can be of great assistance to the Church's ministers since it is the laity, occupied with temporal affairs while at the same time aiming at a more generous and perfect conformity to their baptismal vocation, who are in a position, in many cases, to enlighten and encourage the priest. The integrity of his vocation, one that plunges him into the mystery of Christ and the Church, can suffer harm from various circumstances and from contamination by a destructive worldliness. In this way the whole People of God will honor Christ our Lord in those who represent Him and of whom He has said: "He who receives you receives me, and he who receives me receives him who sent me," (148) promising an assured reward to anyone who in any way shows charity toward those whom He has sent. (149)" Read here.

Flowers on the Road and Saint Patrick
On a certain road walked by this writer every six to eight weeks, a lonely bunch of flowers can be seen forlornly standing at the same spot on the side of a road along a small wooded area. It is a scene that has greeted the eye consistently over the past three years so much so that it has become a regular feature. Each time approaching this floral spot, anticipation rises; will there be a new bunch of flowers on display? A sense of comfort is felt when from a short distance an outline of white petals can be seen against a dark olive green backdrop, the flowers are there, the poignant yet lonesome memorial continues. Perhaps, at this dark, wooden posted spot, a husband, a son or a brother being hit by a car, lost his life. That it most likely was a male member of a family is occasionally evidenced by the placing of a small jar of Japanese rice wine, sake, next to the flowers, the like of which can be seen in most convenience stores across japan. Certainly, not only in Japan, but, across the world, such a simple memorial has been similarly observed by many of us. What stories do you suppose attend upon these yellow, white, red and violet flowers? Who put these flowers there? Why? Sad broken hearts, a loved one sincerely missed, deep regrets, frozen forlorn memories, lost potential – a life cut short. Yet in this lonely spot, a sense of hope is palpable. Though an abrupt untimely death has separated a certain deeply-loved family member from his loved ones, the flowers seem to demonstrate a determination to never forget the lost family member and underlines the belief that all family members will meet again in the after-life with opportunities to joyfully toast each other again with glasses of sake. And so in Japan, in the minds of people, there is the sense of the spiritual life, the existence of a supernatural world, a divine after-life, which follows our short sojourn here on Earth. And if so then there exists the hope for salvation and eternal life, however unknown or misunderstood this may be. St. Patrick, patron saint of Ireland, noted amongst the indigenous pagan Irish a desire and belief in the afterlife similar, it would appear, to that of Japanese people. From this wellspring of hope, St. Patrick inspirationally lead the Irish people to conversion to Christ by enabling them to see for themselves that their own religious beliefs were in fact echoes of the Truth, of the gospel of Christ, of God the Father. Through patience, love and charity St. Patrick made Christ known to the Irish in such a way that their baptism into the Catholic faith became a natural step desired by all. Let us pray then to Saint Patrick, to our missionary saints and the Holy Spirit that the desire for the afterlife by Japanese people, as demonstrated by that simple bunch of roadside flowers can be the stepping-stone to learning about Christ, to getting to know Him and indeed to inspiring these children of God to be baptized in Christ. Let us pray too that citizens of Japan can be inspired to enter into the Catholic family and to share in the promise of eternal salvation and joy in Heaven. - Dayly Knightly
One can easily be discouraged. What can one simple publication do in the face of the overwhelming attacks and persecution that the Church faces today? Yet to do nothing seems a worse course, a surrendering to the enemies of Christ, a wasted opportunity to stand in the ranks with Christ’s solders in this battle of the millennium. Dayly Knightly has become then a labour of love, joyfully researched and edited, gratefully produced from all the wonderful and enlightening presentations and teachings of many great Catholic clergy and laypeople across the world and made available to all those people interested in or desiring to live their Catholic faith as professed from the time of the early Church Fathers. As many are so busy today, especially in Japan, Dayly Knightly also is put together as a digital magazine, a digest of amazing, beautiful and even hard-hitting truths of the Catholic faith to provide people an opportunity to keep informed about issues confronting the Church, to deepen and enrich understanding of the Catholic faith and to share opportunities to unite Catholics both in Japan and internationally. With great thanks and gratitude to God, our Blessed Lady and the inspirational lives of our beloved saints, Dayly Knightly bas grown incrementally into a monthly multimedia magazine with almost zero resources save for an internet computer, time and a desire to do something for God no matter how small the overall effort is. 2018 begins with great hope and joy that this work can continue, that the evangelization of the Catholic faith, in particular in Japan, can undergo a dynamic resurgence and that Dayly Knightly can play some role in inspiring people to be baptized into the Catholic faith or to have their lukewarm faith revitalized. A big thank you to all those people who have given encouragement and inspiration to Dayly Knightly over the past two years. Lord we pray for graces that inspire us to be willing to submit to Your will so that others may come to know you. - Dayly Knightly
National Catholic Awareness Conference Japan 2019 As part of the mission of Dayly Knightly, a first-ever national Catholic conference of Japan is being planned for 2019. The aim of the conference is to bring together Catholic organisations and groups under one roof to network, share their experiences and to promote an active dynamic evangelization of the faith in Japan. Though planning is in the very early stages, an immediate task is to locate a suitable location to host this conference, which can provide facilities to allow seminars and a workshop to be held. Ideal locations would be Catholic university conference centres or public meeting halls. Suggestions or support in finding a location are very welcome. - Dayly Knightly
Dayly Knightly – A Reflection
This 23rd edition of Dayly Knightly, begun in November in 2015, voluntary by design, inspired by the ‘Year of Faith’ call to action of Pope Benedict XVI, and driven by a deep desire to be a witness of the gospel of Christ, is put together monthly as a small yet sincere attempt to join other lay Catholic initiatives in the overall defense of the Catholic faith in a world suffering under rampant modernism, secularism and militant atheism. 4

Christmas Source: Devotion to our Lady
Having The Mind Of The Church The time has now come for the faithful soul to reap the fruit of the efforts she made during the penitential weeks of Advent to prepare a dwelling-place for the Son of God, Who desires to be born within her. The Wedding of the Lamb, the marriage of God and man, has come! The Spouse is the Church; the Spouse is also every faithful soul. Our Lord gives His whole self to the whole flock, and to each sheep of the flock with as much love as though He loved but that one. What garments shall we put on, to go and meet the Bridegroom? Where shall we find the pearls and jewels wherewith to deck our soul for this happy meeting? Our holy Mother the Church will tell us all this in her Liturgy. Our best plan for spending Christmas is, undoubtedly, to keep close to her, and do what she does; for she is most dear to God, and being our Mother, we ought to obey all her commands. Now that we may pass on from this spiritual conception to the birth of Our Lord Jesus; in other words, that we may pass from Advent to Christmas, we must unceasingly keep the eyes of our soul on Him who wishes to be born within us, and in Whom the world is born to a new life. Our study and ambition should be, how best to become like Jesus, by imitating Him; for, though the imitation must needs be imperfect, yet we know from the Apostle that our heavenly Father Himself gives this as the sign of the elect — that they are made like to the image of His Son (Romans 8:29). Mission Japan Providential Growth
The Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest is a Society of Apostolic Life of Pontifical Right whose goal is the honor of God and the sanctification of priests in the service of the Church and souls. Its specific aim is missionary: to spread the reign of our Lord Jesus Christ in all spheres of human life. Our work is carried out under the patronage of the Immaculate Conception, to Whom the Institute is consecrated. Pope Benedict XVI with Monsignor Gilles Wach His Holiness with our founder Msgr. Gilles Wach The Institute was founded in 1990 by Monsignor Gilles Wach and Father Philippe Mora in Gabon, Africa, where we still have missions. Today, the motherhouse and international seminary of the Institute is located in Gricigliano, in the Archdiocese of Florence, Italy. Recognizing the importance of a deep harmony between faith, liturgy, life, and the power of beauty in attracting the human senses to the things above, an integral part of the Institute's charism is the use of the traditional Latin Liturgy of 1962 for the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass and the other sacraments. Great care for a solemn liturgy, complete fidelity to the doctrine of the Church and the Holy Father, and awareness of the central role of Grace, especially Charity — these are essential elements of the Institute's spirituality, which is drawn from its three co-patrons, St. Benedict, St. Thomas Aquinas, and St. Francis de Sales. Our motto, taken from St. Paul, is "Live the truth in charity." The Institute operates in more than fifty places in twelve countries, where our priests focus on the care of souls in many different ways. To assist our priests in their apostolic work, the Institute also has clerical oblates. In 2004, a community of religious sisters was canonically established to aid the priests in their mission through prayer and apostolic work.
History of a Young Institute
Monsignor Wach at Mass Solemn Mass in the traditional Roman rite The Institute of Christ the King is, for ecclesiastical standards, a very young foundation. Our founder, Monsignor Gilles Wach, STD, supported decisively by the co-founder, Father Phillipe Mora, STD, had the Institute canonically erected the Semptember 1, 1990. Originally, the young French abbĂŠ, Gilles Wach, never intended to start a foundation at all, but during the 1980's, working for Cardinal Silvio Oddi in Rome and with a priestly association in France, he was approached by more and more young men who wanted a traditional Catholic formation to the priesthood. Finally, he decided to make an attempt to bring them together and to follow their formation in some way. Several Roman Cardinals, though, urged him to decide for the foundation of a religious community, so that the idea of the Institute took form already as soon as 1988 From Africa to Italy Divine Providence, at this moment, helped to find a bishop who was ready to give this courageous enterprise a canonical foundation. At that time, the situation in France was too tense to realize the idea of the Institute in the home country of our founder, but God is very inventive. He finally brought us in contact with the late Bishop Obamba of Mouila in Gabon who invited the young community to help him in his Diocese with missionary work and gave it the needed canonical erection. At the same time, he appointed our founder his Vicar General, with which goes officially the title Monsignor. Soon, with the help of the German Augustinus Cardinal Mayer, OSB, a member of the Roman Curia, Monsignor Wach was able to find an appropriate location for the Seminary and Motherhouse of his quickly growing community. The Benedictines of Fontgombault in France, who meanwhile founded a monastery in the state of Oklahoma in the United States, had decided to close a priory that they maintained in Gricigliano at a very old summer villa of the Counts Martelli near Florence in Tuscany. Because of the regulations of the estate of the last Countesses, they had to find a successor who would take over the building and guarantee the celebration of the traditional Mass at this place. We were very happy to be able to accept this generous offer, especially because the Archbishop Silvio Cardinal Piovanelli was immediately ready to give our Motherhouse and seminary canonical erection in his diocese. 14
From this day forward, the history of the Institute has been a history of steady growth and more and more apostolic work around the whole world. Soon, apostolates in France, Spain, the United States, South America, Belgium, Switzerland, Austria, and Germany could be opened. More and more seminarians joined the Institute to have a traditional Catholic formation to the priesthood. The spirit of St. Francis de Sales, expressed in the motto of the Institute, Veritatem facientes in caritate ("live the truth in charity"), made the Institute under the guidance of Monsignor Gilles Wach into a family of priests and non-priestly members which is centered on the worthy celebration of the Holy Mysteries, the proclamation of the whole Catholic Truth, and a genuine Catholic lifestyle. Grace, truth, charity, and culture are elements of "family life" which are typical in the houses of the Institute. We are always happy to hear that the faithful who visit our apostolates and priories notice the atmosphere of the Institute's particular spirituality present in all the environments in which we live.
Spirit
"Cook the truth in charity until it tastes sweet"—this famous quotation of St. Francis de Sales is the principle of our apostolic work. Fruitless discussions or, worse, uncharitable polemics never help to attract souls to the Lord. Again, St. Francis de Sales said, "One drop of honey attracts more bees than a barrel of vinegar." The revealed truth of our Holy Catholic Faith is in itself attractive because of its depth, brilliance, and logic. Wherever it appears clothed in the beautiful garments of charity, it becomes ever more acceptable to those who might otherwise fear its inevitable consequences for our lives and the sharpness with which it cuts through our weaknesses and our excuses. The famous religious poet, Gertrude von Le Fort, wrote of the Church and the revealed Truth, "I have fallen in your Faith like in an open sword, and you have cut all my anchors." How much more easily does a soul accept the grandness and the majesty of Divine Faith when it is presented with the merciful charity and patient meekness which Our Lord himself shows all the time to His children. That is the reason why the members of the Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest strive to follow the example of St. Francis de Sales, who was, at the same time, one of the most knowledgeable theologians of his period and the "Doctor of Charity." Certainly, our attempt to teach truth with charity and to live also in our communities a life according to the great commandment of charity is a goal that can only be achieved with a daily struggle against one's own shortcomings and continuous collaboration with the gifts of grace. Charity does not replace daily mortification. On the contrary, he who wants to be full of charity towards the Lord and his neighbor must mortify his own will continuously. This is why St. Francis de Sales, the great teacher of Divine Love and apostolic charity, has rightly been called "the most mortifying of the Saints."
"To be Good at What We Are"
The fact that, after nearly twenty-five years of existence, the Institute counts 80 apostolates in twelve countries, 80 priests, and more than 90 seminarians is perhaps sufficient proof that the Institute is on the right path within the Church. However, it is not our intent to grow quickly and to become mushroom-like, that is to say, big and weak. Rather, we desire to consolidate our Institute by a careful selection of possible candidates and by an always-growing emphasis on a solid community life according to our own spirituality. We do not press our candidates into a mold or a certain typical uniformity of mind and expression, but, here again, we follow St. Francis de Sales. The holy Doctor entreats us "to be good at what we are," which means that through the collaboration with the grace of God, everyone must develop his own various talents and gifts according to the Will of the Lord and to eliminate from his character those traits which are opposed to the divine teachings. This is indeed the ongoing struggle of a lifetime. However, there are appropriate instruments which give us the strength never to give up this battle: a fraternal community, the participation in the mysteries of the liturgy, and the continuous study of the marvelous tradition of the Church as reflected by Scripture and the Magesterium. Thus we can advance every day with renewed joy and confidence.

Veritatem facientes in Caritate

Martyrdom in the Land of the Cherry Blossom
Catholic Japan
- Grzegorz Kucharczyk, Love One Another
Of the estimated 200,000 Japanese Christians martyred in Japan prior to the eighteenth century, the Church records the names of but three thousand. Christianity in the Land of the Samurai Missionary efforts in the Japanese islands began in 1549 with the arrival of Jesuit Father Francis Xavier. The future saint expressed his admiration for the Japanese Christian converts in a letter dated 1552. “I saw how delighted they were at our success. They showed great zeal in furthering the Faith themselves, urging the pagans they had won over to receive baptism.” The first Catholic church was consecrated in 1576, in Kyoto, Japan’s former capital.

Thanks largely to the evangelizing efforts of the Jesuits, Christianity spread steadily and without hindrance until 1587. By this time the Christian population in Japan had grown to almost 200,000. In 1587, the shogun and de facto ruler of the country, Taicosama, slighted by the refusal of two Christian women to become his concubines, began to be purge Christians from the civil service and army. The Jesuits were forbidden to undertake further missionary activity, and a third of the existing 240 Catholic places of worship were burned..

Families, Intercommunication, Relationships, Experiences, Services Requested by a Spanish couple in 1952, a worldwide series of programs set up by Fr Gabriel Calvo, for Married Couples, Sons and Daughters, Families, Engaged Couples, Individuals, Priests and Men and Women Religious, to build more honest and loving relationships with oneself, with ones’ family, with others and with GOD. FIRES ENCOUNTER SAVING COUPLES & FAMILIES IN JAPAN SINCE 1971 Read the Testimonials here. Please contact Fr. Donnon (donnon.murray@holistic–family.org). Website is here.
FIRES – A Brief Explanation
As I look back on my life I do not recall having a struggle in making decisions that would affect my entire life, like deciding to become a Franciscan priest and a missionary in Japan, but rather responding to a quiet voice inside leading me to involved as a priest in the family apostolate. I t is a long story, but I just feel that the Holy Spirit has led me in that direction. Without my planning it, over 40 years ago circumstances led me to meet Father Gabriel Calvo, the founder of Marriage Encounter, and I have been working with him ever since in spreading his FIRES programs throughout Japan and other countries in Asia, as well as in Europe. In Asia I have been fortunate to have the opportunity to introduce programs in the Philippines, Thailand, India, Hong Kong, Sri Lanka as well as up and down Japan. In Europe, in addition to Slovakia, I have had opportunities in Italy, Germany and Hungary. Also in the U.S.A. and Venezuela, and a single trip to Kenya. All of the FIRES programs have as their ultimate goal strengthening of family life in the Lord, and I have found all of them to be very fruitful; but since the couple is the heart of the family, the ideal is to start with Marriage Encounter. I am convinced that it is not sufficient to study and hear wonderful talks about the ideal family life. It is something that must be experienced. Just imagine trying to explain by words alone, to a person coming to Slovakia for the first time, the taste of the favorite dish known to every Slovakian, if that person had never tasted it himself. Let him eat it and then he will know. It is the same with the FIRES programs. The various experiences change peoples’ lives, without any undue concern about how much they have learned from them. The newest FIRES program, and there are more than 20 of them, is called “Evangelizing In, With, and Through the Family”. We have heard very much about evangelizing, but there is a need not only to know about evangelization, but more than that to have an experience that will convince families of the mission they have first of all to be evangelized themselves and then to want to go out and preach the Gospel, as Jesus commanded all the baptized to do. But this program especially emphasizes the need for families to evangelize especially within the parish to which they belong. I started Marriage Encounter and the subsequent FIRES programs in the small parish where I was working initially with the thought only of helping my own parish to grow spiritually. Immediately I came to witness a small sense of what it must have been like on the first Pentecost when 3000 were baptized. At the invitation of Catholic couples who experienced Marriage Encounter many non-Christian couples attended and most of them were baptized within a year, I remember a non-Christian husband coming up to me after a Marriage Encounter and saying: Father I want that biscuit. He did not know what the Eucharist was, but sensed its Mystery. He and his wife and children were baptized within a year. The Church is in need of a New Pentecost, but that will not happen unless Catholic families come to experience the treasure and beauty they have in their own families when they are indeed ‘Families In The Lord’. And unless the Family of Families that comprises the community that gathers in the parish church on Sundays is made up of families who consciously strive to be ‘Families In The Lord’, there will be no New Pentecost in that parish. To put it in very few words families must change their way of life from´ putting the Holy Mass into the week to putting the week into the Holy Mass, which is offered together on Sundays. The potential is enormous! - Father Donnon Murray, O.F.M., Tokyo, Japan 32

FIRES Encounter Testimonials 紹介文(J) 24. Masako Mizuno – Gumma, Japan She was a teller in the bank where we deposited the parish funds. On taking care of my deposit she asked whether anyone at all could come to church, and, of course I invited her to come. She did, and joined the young adults group where she met a nice young man who had just moved to the parish from the northern island of Hokkaido. From a non–Christian bank teller with no formal religion to the following: We experienced ME the very year that we began our married life, from which time we made it our aim to be a “Family in the Lord”. Two of our daughters are married now, and we have three grandchildren. One of our grandchildren went to heaven just a week after being born. This was that daughter’s first child, but sad as it was, it brought that couple closer together and made them decide that they would share everything with one another; and they said that they want at least four or five more children. Thanks be to God! One of the many things that we learned from ME was the importance of sharing on Fr. Calvo’s booklet “Around the Table” – that is, frequent and deep family sharing. But that has extended itself to many and all kinds of people on numerous occasions surrounding our kitchen table to join in wonderful sharings of their lives. At such times, I have often shared some of the discoveries I myself have made through the experience of ME, such as the importance of an Encounter With Self, Fr. Calvo’s admonition to live a spiral way of life (i.e. being open to everyone and not closed like a circle), and to come to love and accept oneself. I have to realize that just as a spiral continues to rise, but only gradually, so I too can’t allow myself to give up, no matter what problems or trials occur. One of the things that has always been a wonderful support in our married life, and for which we are both very grateful, is the prayers of the Poor Clare nuns from Kiryu. About 28 years ago all of the nuns of that community attended the same MR that we did. I was amazed to learn that these were nuns who spent every say, all day, in a life of prayer. Prayer had not been one of my strong points. I was very much moved by their sharings, and throughout the past 28 years, have kept in contact with them through letters and in various other ways. Something that I have always prayed for is that one of our children would receive a vocation to religious life. Our son is 31 years old, and still unmarried. I still haven’t given up hope on him. There are many many more graces over the years that come to mind, but suffice to say that the Encounter experiences have been for us and our family a source of strength that has kept us close to one another and to the Lord. 34

Virtue Needed to Take Heaven by Storm - St Juan Diego - Sensus Fidelium
St. Jerome taught “there is great violence involved when we who have been born on the earth seek to possess a heavenly home through virtue, which we have not retained through nature” (Comm. on St. Matthew). St. Gregory the Great held that a soul seeking his former innocence (i.e., seeking that virtue we have not retained by nature) can even recover something greater: “those who acknowledge themselves to have strayed away from God, make up for their past losses, by subsequent gains: so that there is more joy in heaven on their account, even as in battle, the commanding officer thinks more of a soldier who, after running away, returns and bravely attacks the foe, than of one who has never turned his back, but has done nothing brave” (cf. Aquinas, ST, III,89,3). And this takes “Evangelical Violence” to do… prayer, study, penance. Devotion to Our Lady is a must here too… for she will help us bravely fight the foe and seek virtue with this evangelical violence. Listen how St. Juan Diego did just take heaven by storm with the help of Our Lady. For more please visit http://www.reginaprophetarum.org & remember to say 3 Hail Marys for the priest. Saintly Obedience trumps Divisive Revolt
Dr Rowan Williams, previous Archbishop of Canterbury, explores the meaning of Christmas, the darkness and strangeness of the story at the beginning of our faith as well as its message of eternal joy and hope. He also offers suggestions about how we might reclaim Christmas for our spiritual lives.

St. Peter Damian (1007 - 1072) Background • 500 years before Martin Luther • Rampant Church abuses • Reformed the Catholic Church by removing abuses e.g. homosexual acts between the clergy • Stayed obedient to the Church in spite of the rampant abuses • Was a learned scholar • Had a cruel childhood (abusive family members) • Rose to be a Cardinal though he desired to remain a simple monk. • Hus legacy was to heal the Church of its divisions and bring unity • Became a Saint
Martin Luther (1483 - 1546) Background • 500th Anniversary Revolt • Rampant Church abuses • Revolted against the Catholic Church by attacking abuses e.g. sale of indulgences • Rejected obedience to the Church, & excommunicated • Was a learned scholar • Had a cruel childhood (abusive parents) • Left his Augustinian Order, married and had a family • Left a legacy of over 33,000 Protestant denominations today separated from the Catholic Church
St. Magadelena of Nagasaki (1612 - 1634) Background • 100 years after Martin Luther • Persecution against the Church • Provided courageous support to Augustinian friars in Japan, four of whom were martyred. • Stayed obedient to the Church in spite of great danger • Was studying to be a nun • Had a cruel childhood (her parents were martyred) • Was a lay Augustinian sister, sought to be a Dominican sister • After 13 days of torture was martyred becoming an inspiration for Christians in Japan. • Became a Saint

Breathtaking Irony 500
Luther, an Augustinian friar, needed only to look at, by his time, the 500 year old example of Saint Peter Damian and how this saint had battled the vices of the Church and thereby could have chosen to remain within the Church to heal the abuses. Luther chose not to do so. Saint Magdalena of Nagasaki, an Augustinian lay sister, over a hundred years after Luther's revolt, out of her deep love for Christ and His Church, at the young age of 23, chose martyrdom. How ironic! - Dayly Knightly 52

Get to know these holy women and men of God! Saints and blesseds are special signs of God’s activity. Their surrender to God’s love was so generous an approach to the total surrender of Jesus that the Church recognizes them as heroes and heroines worthy to be held up for our inspiration. They remind us that the Church is holy, can never stop being holy, and is called to show the holiness of God by living the life of Christ. Saint Stephen’s Story Franciscan Media
“As the number of disciples continued to grow, the Greek-speaking Christians complained about the Hebrew-speaking Christians, saying that their widows were being neglected in the daily distribution. So the Twelve called together the community of the disciples and said, ‘It is not right for us to neglect the word of God to serve at table. Brothers, select from among you seven reputable men, filled with the Spirit and wisdom, whom we shall appoint to this task, whereas we shall devote ourselves to prayer and to the ministry of the word.’ The proposal was acceptable to the whole community, so they chose Stephen, a man filled with faith and the Holy Spirit…” (Acts 6:1-5). Acts of the Apostles says that Stephen was a man filled with grace and power, who worked great wonders among the people. Certain Jews, members of the Synagogue of Roman Freedmen, debated with Stephen, but proved no match for the wisdom and spirit with which he spoke. They persuaded others to make the charge of blasphemy against him. He was seized and carried before the Sanhedrin. In his speech, Stephen recalled God’s guidance through Israel’s history, as well as Israel’s idolatry and disobedience. He then claimed that his persecutors were showing this same spirit. “…you always oppose the holy Spirit; you are just like your ancestors” (Acts 7:51b). Stephen’s speech brought anger from the crowd. “But he, filled with the holy Spirit, looked up intently to heaven and saw the glory of God and Jesus standing at the right hand of God, and he said, ‘Behold, I see the heavens opened and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God.’ …They threw him out of the city, and began to stone him. …As they were stoning Stephen, he called out, ‘Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.’ …’Lord, do not hold this sin against them’” (Acts 7:55-56, 58a, 59, 60b). Reflection Stephen died as Jesus did: falsely accused, brought to unjust condemnation because he spoke the truth fearlessly. He died with his eyes trustfully fixed on God, and with a prayer of forgiveness on his lips. A “happy” death is one that finds us in the same spirit, whether our dying is as quiet as Joseph’s or as violent as Stephen’s: dying with courage, total trust and forgiving love. St John the Baptist Prepares Us for Christ - Sensus Fidelium 60
The Catholic Mass' history, from the Last Supper to the present day, is one of meticulous care and organic development. Early Growth On Holy Thursday, Christ instituted the Holy Sacrifice of Mass, commanding His disciples to offer it as well.1 The earliest Masses had the character of the Last Supper, with readings from Holy Scripture and the offering of the Holy Sacrifice. During these earliest liturgies, the priest sat at one end of a U-shaped table with the faithful sitting beside him, as it was at the Last Supper.2 With these essentials in place, with the Holy Ghost in the life of the Church, and with care from the Bishops of Rome, the form of the Mass in the West took on a Roman character, which established its everlasting beauty. Latin became the universal language of the Church. Gregorian chant, adopted from the chants in the old Synagogue3, became standardized and used throughout Mass. Council of Trent and the "Tridentine" Mass With the rise of Protestantism, some had sought to change the Mass, even those faithful to the Catholic Church. This caused the Council of Trent to call for its restoration (this is why the Traditional Latin Mass is sometimes called the "Tridentine" Mass). This restoration was carried out under the authority of St. Pius V in 1570, who "restored the Missal itself to the original form and rite of the holy Fathers."4 This same form of Mass, which nourished so many souls since the beginning of the Church, can be experienced today in the Traditional Latin Mass. "What earlier generations held as sacred, remains sacred and great for us too . . . It behooves all of us to preserve the riches which have developed in the Church's faith and prayer, and to give them their proper place."5 Classical Latin Mass in Our Modern Day After the Second Vatican Council, a new form of Mass was introduced. During this time, the Traditional Latin Mass could be offered with permission. Among many others, St. Padre Pio and St. Josemaria Escriva, two popular saints of our modern day, used this permission to continue to say the ancient Mass. In 1984 the Vatican allowed for bishops to permit the Traditional Mass, and in 1988, Pope John Paul II asked that there be great application of this permission. Now, in 2007, Pope Benedict XVI has given all priests and faithful the right to offer and attend the Traditional Latin Mass, without seeking any special permission, with his milestone document, "Summorum Pontificum." Homily for the Feast of the Holy Family - Father Frank Pavone
Fr. Frank Pavone, National Director of Priests for Life, preaches pro-life on the Feast of the Holy Family in Year B. The family is the “Sanctuary of Life” and the basic cell of society. The Holy Family, of course, is unique. One member is God, another is sinless, and the third is a saint. But the great lesson of today is that although God could have come into the world in any way he pleased, he chose to become a member of a family, obedient to his earthly parents, and yet totally devoted to the Heavenly Father’s will, as we all must be. He also shared the vulnerability that comes with being a member of a human family. “Herod is going to search for the child in order to destroy him.” St. Joseph here plays the unspeakable role of protecting God. His readiness to do so, in the person of his child, speaks to every father about the role of protector, and to our whole society about the need we have for good fathers. The culture of life depends just as much on fathers making the right choices as on mothers doing so. Strong families are an integral aspect of the Culture of Life. Today’s preaching can focus on that fact. It is precisely the breakdown of family structure that increases the temptation to abort, or to resort to euthanasia or a lack of proper care for the elderly. On the other hand, the communion of persons that comes from giving oneself away to the other in selfless love is what creates the proper context for saying a generous “yes” to life. A helpful lesson to point out from the very word “family” is that it stands for “Forget About Me; I Love You.” Watch homily here.

MILITIAE SPIRITUALI - Spiritual Warfare
These articles are simplified so that children themselves can read and understand the dangers of Modernism Article 48 UNTANGLING YOURSELF FROM MODERNISM Having a Disease Without Knowing It Most people are carrying diseases that they are not even aware of—they will only realize that they have the disease once it has reached a dangerous level. They may feel early symptoms, but they “explain them away”, pretending or hoping that it is “just nothing” and that it will go away by itself. Cancer is one of those diseases. We all carry cells in our body that are potential cancer cells. It only needs the right environment, that is created by our bad habits of eating and lacking exercise, to blossom in to a full-fledged cancer. The same is true of heart disease and the causes are usually the same—bad eating habits and little exercise. Cancer and heart disease are the two top killers in the Western world today. Disease of Liberalism and Modernism We can liken Liberalism and Modernism to cancer and heart disease—they are the two top ‘damners’ of today. Everyone carries around in their soul the potential cells of Liberalism and Modernism—they are a consequence of Original Sin. Given the right environment—Liberal or Modernist family members, friends, teachers or fellow workers—those cells will grow in to the disease of Liberalism and Modernism. Most souls end up in Hell because of Liberalism and Modernism—and, as Jesus and many saints say: Most souls are damned. You might not like that truth. You might question that truth. You might dispute that truth. You might reject that truth. But it is the truth and nobody, not even you, can change the truth. Not that Jesus wants them to be damned—but it is their deliberate refusal to follow the instructions of Jesus that damns them. They think that they can do what they want and end up being saved. They find out too late that they were wrong. Liberalism and Modernism is all about refusing instructions and doing what you want to do. Nobody Will Tell You This Because It Is Not Popular Nobody wants to be a spoilsport and nobody likes to rock the boat. Bishops, priests, parents and teachers will avoid telling you unpleasant things for fear of losing your ‘friendship’! Yet they don’t think of the 78
eternal consequences of doing so! How many souls are in Hell today because nobody warned them about certain behaviors, nor corrected them if they fell into those behaviors. I would hope that most priests, parents and teachers will warn you about mortal sins and teach you which sins are mortal. But how many warn and correct you about venial sins? It is venial sins that are the spiritual ‘cancer’ cells that potentially grow into mortal ‘cancer’ cells. Get used to committing lots of venial sins, and the smallest of mortal sins is only a step away. Pope St. Pius X on Modernists Priests, parents and teachers would do well to pay attention to the words and attitude of Pope St. Pius X. Replying to someone who begged him (Saint Pius X) to “go soft” on the Modernists, the Pope retorted: “Kindness is for fools! They want them [Modernists] to be treated with oil, soap, and caresses, but they ought to be beaten with fists! In a duel you don't count or measure the blows, you strike as you can! War is not made with charity, it is a struggle, a duel. If Our Lord were not terrible, He would not have given an example in this too. See how he treated the Pharisees, the sowers of error, the wolves in sheep's clothing, the traitors in the Temple. He scourged them with whips!” Too Soft! We really are too soft! Too soft on our79
MILITIAE SPIRITUALI - Spiritual Warfare
MILITIAE SPIRITUALI - Spiritual Warfare selves and too soft on those who are deliberately, or indeliberately, destroying our Faith. Our enemies make themselves “cute” and likeable. We don’t have the heart to fight them off. That we why we get ourselves entangled in their traps and snares. Even those traps and snares are made to feel comfortable and likeable!
Article 37 BE DIFFERENT! BE HAPPY! What Are you Afraid Of? Catholics, by the very nature of their Faith, have to be different. Yet being different is something that can cause great fear in us and paralyze us. You probably know—at least we hope so—what a good Catholic SHOULD be like, but most probably you do not live-up to all the demands of being a REAL and TRUE Catholic because you are afraid to do so. Why are you afraid to do so? The chief reasons for you will be the same reasons as they are for every Catholic. 1. You’re afraid of standing-out from everyone else. 2. You’re afraid of not being “normal” in the eyes of the world. 3. You’re afraid of being talked about—what people will think and say.. 4. You’re afraid of being compared unfavorably with the rest of the crowd. 5. You’re afraid of being insulted or made fun of. 6. You’re afraid of being hated. 7. You’re afraid of being isolated and ignored by others. 8. You’re afraid of changing for the better because of the above. It all comes down to what we call “human respect”, or “pack mentality”, “safety in numbers”, “conformity” or whatever else you want to call it. For many people it’s mixture of being afraid to be different and that they feel safer being the same as others, although these two things sound the same, they are different ways of looking at the same situation. Tough To Take! We’ve all had the experience of being laughed at by our friends, fellow students, co-workers, and certainly our family members. Occasionally, you may even recall being laughed at by a stranger for some social blunder or gaffe, or perhaps over the way you dress and the clothes you wear (or won’t wear). Being laughed at by others can be a miserable experience. Call it bullying, teasing, or mocking, yet serving as the butt of someone else’s humor is very tough on a person. What's even worse, is that this kind of mistreatment by others can lead you to become anxious and fearful of being exposed to the situation again—so the mistreated person conforms, complies, and starts to behave in a way that is acceptable to the crowd or pack mentality. At the same time, you start to wonder whether there’s something wrong with you and so start to question your own personal qualities, as well as questioning the Faith and its moral demands. Time For Tough Decisions You have to be strong—especially if you want to get to Heaven! Our Lord said: “The Kingdom of Heaven suffereth violence, and the violent bear it away!” (Matthew 11:12) and St. Paul adds: “Fight the good fight of Faith: lay hold on eternal life, whereunto thou art called!” (1 Timothy 6:12). Now why do most souls go to Hell? Because they will not fight the fight! Instead, they lay down their arms in face of the slightest opposition. They do not want to be part of the minority--“Many are called, but few are chosen … for wide is the gate, and broad is the way that leadeth to destruction, and many there are who go in thereat. How narrow is the gate, and strait is the way that leadeth to life: and few there are that find it!” (Matthew 22:15; 7:13-14). For being part of the “few” means “being different” and being opposed by the “many”. 80
Tough Drama of Life That is the drama—the tough drama—of life. The “few” versus the “many”—yet that is the test, the examination, the battle that we have to pass through and pass through successfully. God is there to help you and will help you! Our Lady is there to help you and will help you. But do you want to be helped? Help does not mean having everything done for you, or difficulties being taken away. Help means assistance to go through the difficulties, to fight the fight, to endure the mockery, gossip, ostracization and persecution—for without those tests YOU WILL NOT GET TO HEAVEN! Our Lord Himself said: “Everyone therefore that shall confess Me before men, I will also confess him before My Father Who is in Heaven. But he that shall deny Me before men, I will also deny him before My Father Who is in Heaven. Do not think that I came to send peace upon Earth! I came not to send peace, but the sword! For I came to set a man at variance against his father, and the daughter against her mother, and 81
s

the daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law. And a man’s enemies shall be they of his own household. He that loveth father or mother [or friends] more than Me, is not worthy of Me; and he that loveth son or daughter more than Me, is not worthy of Me. And he that taketh not up his cross, and followeth Me, is not worthy of Me. He that findeth his life, shall lose it: and he that shall lose his life for Me, shall find it!” (Matthew 10:32-39). You Have To Be Different and You Will Be Hated Our Lord goes on to tell us that we will be attacked for being different to the world. Jesus said to Pontius Pilate: “My kingdom is not of this world” (John 18:36). Speaking of us, Jesus said: “They are not of the world, as I also am not of the world” (John 17:16). Jesus says to us: “If the world hate you, know ye, that it hath hated Me before you” (John 15:18). “Then shall they deliver you up to be afflicted, and shall put you to death: and you shall be hated by all nations for My name’s sake” (Matthew 24:9). “And you shall be hated by all men for My Name’s sake. But he that shall endure unto the end, he shall be saved” (Mark 13:13). We have to say to others what Our Lord said to others: “You are from beneath, I am from above. You are of this world, I am not of this world!” (John 8:23). We must be different and have the courage to say: “You seek the things of this world, I seek the things of above. You are worldly, I want to be spiritual! Jesus and the Bible say that your way will lead to Hell and damnation, I want to go to Heaven!”
etous, haughty, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, ungrateful, wicked, without affection, without peace, slanderers, incontinent, unmerciful, without kindness, traitors, stubborn, puffed up, and lovers of pleasures more than of God, having an appearance indeed of godliness, but denying the power thereof. NOW THESE AVOID” (2 Timothy 3:1-5). In other words DO NOT BE LIKE THEM, which means being different to them, and AVOIDING THEM, which also means being different to them—for as they say: “Birds of a feather will flock together!” Be Different Here on Earth to Be Happy in Heaven “What friendship can there be between light and darkness? And what agreement can there be between Christ and the devil? Or what friendship can there be between the faithful and the unbeliever? And what agreement has the temple of God with idols? For you are the temple of the living God! Wherefore, ‘Go out from among them, and be ye separate!’ saith the Lord” (2 Corinthians 6:14-17). “My son, walk not thou with them, restrain thy foot from their paths. For their feet run to evil” (Proverbs 1:15-16). Be different and be happy that you are different—for your reward will be great in Heaven, not here below, but in Heaven. “But he that shall endure until the end, he shall be saved” (Mark 13:13).
For most people, someone who is different, to the rest of the world, feels like a threat and a sting to their conscience. Deep down they know what they should be doing, but they avoid doing it. Those who really try to be true Catholics are bound to get attacked—Our Lord said so. If you're seen as a threat, you will be attacked. They hope that if you are attacked, you will stop being different, because you will be afraid of being attacked again and again. That is where real courage comes into play. You need to think of the Passion of Our Lord and beg for the graces (you cannot do it without grace) to imitate Our Lord’s calm endurance of all they threw at Him. Rejoice in Being Different—Rejoice if You Are Hated It is not for nothing that Our Lord says: “Blessed are they that suffer persecution for justice' sake: for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven! Blessed are ye when they shall revile you, and persecute you, and speak all that is evil against you, untruly, for My sake! Be glad and rejoice, for your reward is very great in Heaven. For so they persecuted the prophets that were before you. You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt lose its savor, wherewith shall it be salted? It is good for nothing any more but to be cast out, and to be trodden on by men. You are the light of the world. A city seated on a mountain cannot be hid. Neither do men light a candle and put it under a table, but upon a candlestick, that it may shine to all that are in the house. So let your light shine before others, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father Who is in Heaven” (Matthew 5:10-16)—or even if they ridicule you and mock you in the process. Your reward will be great in Heaven! That’s where you want to go, isn’t it? Well, there is only one way that leads there—the Way of the Cross—and as Jesus said, very few take that road and go down the other road instead. It’s Your Choice—You Choose the Consequences Too Jesus can tell you what to do, but He will never twist your arm—you are free to choose which road you want to take and take the consequences that come with your choice. As St. Paul says: “Be not conformed to this world [so be different to the world]; but be reformed in the newness of your mind, that you may find and do what is the good, and the acceptable, and the perfect will of God” (Romans 12:2). “Be not deceived! God is not mocked! For what things a man shall sow, those also shall he reap. For he that soweth in his flesh, of the flesh also shall reap corruption. But he that soweth in the spirit, of the spirit shall reap life everlasting” (Galatians 6:8). Is This What You Want To Be Like? “Know also this, that, in the last days, shall come dangerous times. Men shall be lovers of themselves, cov82

Article 21 DO NOT BE AFRAID OF BEING "OLD-FASHIONED"!
opinion or belief.” However, our Faith is not OUR opinion or belief, but the Faith is the opinion and belief, or the truth given to us by Jesus Christ and handed down to us through the Apostles and their successors. The word, “Traditions,” means, “a long established or inherited way of thinking or acting that has been handed down from one generation to another.” These “traditions” come to us through the writings of the Early Church Father, the Councils of the Church. If someone comes up with a new teaching that drifts away or is even opposed to the “traditions” of the Church, then that new teaching must be rejected as well the teacher of that new teaching. The Bible and Tradition provide for Christians the long established ways of thinking and acting that go back to the time of Christ and the Apostles. It is these “traditions” that we must refuse to abandon. We must be “old-fashioned” in our attitude—which means, we do not change just as God does not change!
Fashions Change! God Doesn't! You probably never thought of it that way before, but God really is "old-fashioned"! The world is full of change. Fashions change. Tastes change. Ideas change. Lifestyles change. Liberalism (think, say, do what you want), the daddy of Modernism (think, say and do with the Faith what you want), will always change colors to fit the crowd it finds itself in, and say what the crowd wants to hear. Let us learn from the mistakes of these Liberals and Modernists and change what is wrong in our own lives before it’s too late! Let us go back to being “old-fashioned” because God is “old-fashioned”. Did You Know That God Is "Old-Fashioned"? “For I am the Lord, and I change not” (Malachias 3:6). God is, as St. James says, “the Father of lights, with whom there is no change, nor shadow of alteration” (James 1:17). God does not change, just like truth does not change. When we get bored with something, we want a change—when we get bored with religion, the Faith and God, then we want a change. Modernism is only too happy to give you that change—because Modernism is more focused on pleasing man who likes change, and not so much on pleasing God who does not change. Hold-On To Traditional Teachings and Attitudes St. Paul writes: “Therefore, brethren, stand fast and hold the traditions, which you were taught, whether by word or epistle” (2 Thessalonians 2:15). It is not a secret that we are living in changing times. In fact, society is changing so fast that it becomes difficult to keep up with the latest trends from one day to the next. Technology, for example, is one area that changes at a mind-boggling speed.
The Spirit of Evil—the Spirit of Antichrist The Spirit of the Antichrist is in the world, preparing the way for the arrival of the “Man of Sin” (2 Thessalonians 2:3)—who will be Antichrist himself. This Spirit of the Antichrist is behind the changes in our culture and is opening the door for greater trickery and lies to come. The devil and his instruments in the world and the Church, knows that if he can change our beliefs, then he can change the way we live, act and think. We must “Stand Fast” and “Hold to the Traditions” that have to come to us by the Word of God in these changing times. The world, and even some in the Church, may call it “Old Fashioned.” Let them call it what they will, but we must choose to have a Faith rooted in the Traditions of God’s Word. It will be this “Old Fashioned Faith” in a modern time that will keep us safe in the evil day.
This has led to a change in the way people think—the way you think! People have become programmed to look for the next great gadget on the market with the latest features. We all can appreciate technology and the convenience and cleverness it gives us. Yet, there is another side to the ever-changing times in which we live—there is no longer any value placed on traditional values and standards. As a result, society is busy changing its views on everything from Marriage and Morality to Beliefs and Behaviors. What was once thought to be acceptable is now unacceptable. What was unacceptable is now acceptable. What was once considered shameful, embarrassing and abnormal is now the new normal and is praised. As the Bible warns: “Woe to you that call evil good, and good evil: that put darkness for light, and light for darkness: that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!” (Isaias 5:20). If You Won't Change, You Are Mocked If a person disagrees with current fashions and ways of doing things, then he or she is made to feel abnormal and is laughed at and mocked by the people of the modern world. Modern attitudes look upon traditional values and moral standards as “Old Fashioned,” as if they were cell phones and computers from a previous decade that are now out of date. You were already warned that these kinds of times would come. The Bible foretold that: “The time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers; and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables.” (2 Timothy 4:3-4). Stand Fast and Firm! St. Paul writes: “Therefore, brethren, stand fast and hold the traditions, which you were taught, whether by word or epistle” (2 Thessalonians 2:15). The phrase, “Stand Fast,” means, “to refuse to abandon’s one’s 84

different. They feel they need to talk the way other children talk, to act the way other children act, to think the way other children think, and so on. Children are afraid of being rejected by other children, they want to “fit-in” with the crowd. This is a very serious and widespread danger. The devil uses this attitude to drag many souls, bit by bit, away from the Faith and into the world. The world becomes the new religion. The children become “two-faced”—one face on for an hour or two Sunday, when they have to go to church, and another face throughout the rest of week when they mix with the world. It is good to remember the words of Our Lord on this matter: “Everyone that shall stand-up for and defend Me before others, I will also stand-up for and defend him before My Father who is in Heaven. But he that shall be ashamed of Me or deny Me before men, I will also be ashamed of him and will deny him before My Father Who is in Heaven. Do not think that I came to send peace upon Earth! I came not to send peace, but the sword. For I came to set a man at variance against his father, and the daughter against her mother, and the daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law. And a person’s enemies shall be they of their own home. He that loves father or mother more than Me, is not worthy of Me; and he that loves son or daughter more than Me, is not worthy of Me!” (Matthew 10:32-37). We must not be weak in face of the world and others, but we must be strong. The world does not offer us eternal life, but only 60, or 70, or 80 years of life—then it is all over! Then eternity begins in one of two places—Heaven or Hell. Let us be honest and face the fact that the world leads most souls to Hell. If we side with the world, then we must realize where it is that we will most likely end up—it won’t be Heaven. That is why we must be “old-fashioned” and stay with the truth that never changes, even if the whole world changes around us.

WHICH GROUP DO YOU BELONG TO? “There are two groups that appear before you each day, the followers of Christ and the followers of the world. There is only a handful of people who follow Christ. The world’s group, the devil’s in fact, is far superior in number and seemingly far more colorful and splendid in array. Fashionable folk are in a hurry to enlist, the highways are overcrowded, they are broad and ever broadening with the crowds that flow through in a torrent. These roads are bordered with all kinds of amusements and attractions. “Enjoy life, peace and pleasure!” they shout, “Let us eat, let us drink, let us sing, let us dance, let us play! God is good! He did not make us to damn us! God does not forbid us to enjoy ourselves!” “A Friend of the Cross is one chosen by God from among ten thousand … A Friend of the Cross triumphs over the devil, the world and the flesh. He overthrows the pride of Satan by his love for humiliation; he triumphs over the world’s greed by his love for poverty; and he restrains the sensuality of the flesh by his love for suffering. “A Friend of the Cross is a man separated from visible things. His heart is lifted high above all that is frail and perishable; “his conversation is in Heaven” (Philippians 3:20); he journeys here below like a stranger and pilgrim. He keeps his heart free from the world and disdainfully tramples it under foot. “Those who are willing to be made conformable to the crucified Christ by carrying their cross are few in number. It would cause us to faint away from grief to learn how surprisingly small is their number. It is so small that among ten thousand people there is scarcely one to be found, as was revealed to several saints.” (St. Louis de Montfort, Letter to Friends of the Cross).
I looked for someone that would comfort Me, and I found none!
“Jesus said to all: ‘If any man will come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me!’” (Luke 9:23). “And he that taketh not up his cross, and followeth Me, is not worthy of Me” (Matthew 10:38). “You cannot serve God and mammon!” (Matthew 6:24). “Love not the world, nor the things which are in the world. If any man love the world, the charity of the Father is not in him” (1 John 2:15). “Know you not that the friendship of this world is the enemy of God? Whosoever therefore will be a friend of this world, becometh an enemy of God!” (James 4:4). Source: Devotion to our Lady

Mary Help of Christians
The Feast of Mary Help of Christians is celebrated on May 24. The tradition of this advocation goes back to 1571, when the whole of Christendom was saved by Mary Help of Christians when Catholics throughout Europe prayed the Rosary. The great battle of Lepanto occurred on October 7th 1571. For this reason this date has been chosen as the feast of the Holy Rosary. In 1573 Pope Pius V instituted the feast in thanksgiving for the decisive victory of Christianity over Islamism. Near the end of the 17th century, Emperor Leopold I of Austria took refuge in the Shrine of Mary Help of Christians at Pasau, when 200,000 Ottoman Turks besieged the capital city of Vienna, but a great victory occurred thanks to Mary Help of Christians: on September 8th, Feast of Our Lady's Birthday, plans were drawn for the battle. On September 12, Feast of the Holy Name of Mary, Vienna was finally freed through the intercession of Mary Help of Christians. All Europe had joined with the Emperor crying out "Mary, Help!" and praying the Holy rosary. In 1809, Napoleon's men entered the Vatican, arrested Pius VII and brought him in chains to Grenoble, and eventually Fontainbleau. His imprisonment lasted five years. The Holy Father vowed to God that , if he were restored to the Roman See, he would institute a special feast in honor of Mary. Military reverses forced Napoleon to release the Pope, and on May 24th 1814, Pius VII returned in triumph to Rome. Twelve months later, the Pope decreed that the feast of Mary Help of Christians, be kept on the 24th of May. Read more here. 89

Jesus was not a politician, but he understood the most important rule of politics. “He who is not with me is against me” (Mt 12:30). Many of his present-day followers, on the other hand, do not, at least when it comes to the pro-life cause. “ The world is not black or white,” they say. “There are many shades of gray. You can’t legislate morality. You must not ardently criticize your opponent. Christians are called to dialogue. Believers and unbelievers should set aside differences in the pursuit of common ground,” they insist.
Christians Who Never Draw a Line In Washington, they call this bipartisanship. In Rome, they call it accompaniment. But in practice, it always means one thing. Whether it is policy or morals, Christians in politics find it hard to draw a line in the sand. Above all, they should be polite and not get hung up about abortion and homosexuality. Not so the leftists, and the churchmen who support them. They understand the importance of allegiances in politics all too well. In his famous book Rules for Radicals, Saul Alinksy laid out an entire strategic manual for politics based on polarizing rhetoric. He wrote it specifically to empower underrepresented populations. It has inspired the left for generations, to great effect. Many Christian politicians and clergy, on the other hand, too often suppress strong rhetoric against abortion and reject pro-life political litmus tests in favor of naïve, appeasing rhetoric. They’re all too ready to concede the moral high ground to avoid controversy. A pro-life “lite” approach that weighs abortion as just one political issue among many is a prime example of this. The pro-life cause has suffered as a result. Of course, Christians shouldn’t adopt Alinsky’s tactics uncritically. But we should borrow where we can from his playbook. As we increasingly become political underdogs, we must become more radical, in Alinsky’s sense. The passion and invective of pro-life politicians in recent congressional debates on the twenty-week abortion ban show we are moving in the right direction. Alinksy believed there is no such thing as compromise in politics. There are only winners and losers, friends and foes, in his political universe. He was right in at least in one respect. You need to win elections to get results in politics. Just ask Hillary Clinton or Jeff Flake.
Alinsky’s Rules are Not the Golden Rule
96
Alinsky crafted a genius formula that is all about winning. First, demonize your political opponent. Caricature him. Make him the embodiment of everything that is wrong in the world. Then, assail him with a barrage of attacks. Don’t give him time to rest and reorganize. Above all, make no concession for your political enemy, ever. Don’t pander to his good will. The enemy must be annihilated. Read more here. 97

The SADDUCees
The Pharisees
SADDUCEE HISTORY & BELIEFS
SADDUCEE “QUICK FACTS”
BATTLE WITH THE PHARISEES
WOULD YOU BELIEVE IT !?!
The Sadducees were a group of Jews that were active in Ancient Israel during the last part of Second Temple period—the period in Ancient Israel between the construction of the Second Temple in Jerusalem in 516 B.C. and its later destruction by the Romans in 70 A.D.
► Sadducees were the dominant group among Jews at the time of Christ.
When the Jews ◄Pharisee returned from their Babylonian exile to Jerusalem in 537 BC, they were without a king. Just as Sadducee ► children will argue and fight when parents are absent, so too did the Jews argue without a king. Everyone had their own opinion on what to think and how to do things. The Sadducees emerged as the ruling class, but they found much opposition from other groups—among them the Pharisees. ► Conflict was partially a class issue, between the wealthy and the poor—the Sadducees came mainly from the priestly and aristocratic families, while the Pharisees came from the middle or lower classes.
The Pharisee was a member of a Jewish religious party that emerged and grew in Palestine during the latter part of the Second Temple period (515 B.C. to 70 A.D.). During the 70year exile in Babylon, to help preserve the faith in exile, there arose Jewish houses of assembly and prayers (called “synagogues” in Greek), in addition to houses where the Torah and religion were studied, a partner to the synagogue. Once Babylon fell to the conquering Persians in 539 B.C., their king, Cyrus the Great, allowed Jews to return to Judea and rebuild the Temple. He did not, however, allow the restoration of the Judean monarchy, which left the Judean priests as the dominant authority. It was around this time that the Sadducee party emerged as the party of priests and united social elites. However, the Second Temple—finished by 515 B.C. —had been constructed with the help of a foreign power, and there were thorny questions about the lawfulness of the project. This led to the birth of various “schools of thought” or opinions, each of which claimed to be the rightful authority to represent “Judaism,” and which typically shunned social contact, especially marriage, with members of other groups. The Temple was no longer the only institution for Jewish religious life. After the building of the Second Temple in the time of Ezra the Scribe, the houses of prayer and study that had preserved the Jewish religion in exile, now remained an important part of Jewish life. Outside of Judea, the synagogue was often called a house of prayer. While most Jews could not regularly attend the Temple service, they could meet at the synagogue for morning, afternoon and evening prayers. On Mondays, Thursdays and the Sabbath, a weekly Torah portion was read publicly in the synagogues. Although priests controlled the rituals of the Temple, the scribes and sages, later called rabbis (Hebrew: “my master”), dominated the study of the Torah. They identified with the Prophets and developed and maintained an oral tradition that they believed had originated at Mount Sinai alongside the Torah of Moses. The Pharisees had their origins in this new group of authorities.
When the Jews returned from their Babylonian exile to Jerusalem in 537 BC, they were without a king. Just as children will argue and fight when parents are absent, so too did the Jews argue without a king. Everyone had their own opinion on what to think and how to do things. The Sadducees emerged as the ruling class— the party of the high priesthood that provided the sole leadership of the Jewish people. The Sadducees represented an aristocratic, wealthy, and traditional elite—but that traditionalism showed its weakness by letting itself be influenced by the Greek and Roman cultures. They met with mounting opposition from the emerging Pharisees from around 100 B.C. onwards. The Pharisees wanted to wrestle the authority away from the Sadducees in favor of a more democratic rule. At the time of Jesus, the Sadducees and the Pharisees constituted the two principal factions of the Jewish people. They were not “sects,” however, in the strict sense of the word, for they were not distinct from the moral structure of the nation; nor were they religious confraternities like the Essenes, although their basic principles were religious. Neither was their outstanding characteristic any given political position as in the case of the Herodians although they were extremely important even in the political and social field. Rather they represented two currents of thought or tendencies which, though completely opposed to each other, were both based on sacred principles of the Jewish nation. It is generally believed that the Pharisees were the conservatives and the Sadducees the liberals, more given to innovations. This may have been true in actual practice, but from the juridical-religious point of view the designation should be reversed, for the Sadducees claimed that they were the ones who had preserved the true moral heritage of Judaism and they rejected as innovations the particular tenets of the Pharisees. The famous Jewish historian of that time, Flavius Josephus, identifies the Sadducees with the upper social and economic strata of Judean society. As a whole, the sect fulfilled various political, social, and religious roles, including maintaining the Temple. Their group is believed to have become extinct after the destruction of Herod’s Temple in Jerusalem in 70 A.D. The Sadducees deny the immortality of the soul, and hence all notion of reward for the good or punishment for the bad in the next world. They reject every kind of oral or written tradition other than the Torah (the first five book of the Bible), which for them is the sole source of Divine Revelation and Divine Law. They reject the teaching of the Prophets as coming from God. They have no respect for the teachers, but rather consider it a virtue to contradict them. Not many belonged to the Sadducees, but the few who did were members of the upper classes. They took little part in public affairs and, when they are forced against their will to do so, they act in conformity with the teaching of the Pharisees since otherwise the people would not tolerate them.
► They were mainly from the upper classes — the aristocracy and the wealthy. ► Various political, social, and religious roles, including maintaining the Temple. ► Most of the Jewish priests of the Temple came from the ranks of the Sadducees. ► Became extinct after the destruction of Herod’s Temple in Jerusalem in 70 A.D. ► They liked and accepted the Roman and Greek influences of the day (Hellenism). ► Their religious focus was based on worship in the Temple, whereas the Pharisees also insisted upon additional daily prayer and study outside the Temple worship. ► They said all divine revelation was contained only in the written Torah (the first 5 books of the Old Testament), and refused the writings of the Prophets and all oral tradition. ► Their chief beliefs were that: (1) there is no fate; (2) God does not commit evil; (3) man has free will to choose good or evil; (4) the soul is not immortal; (5) there is no afterlife, and (6) there are no rewards or penalties after death.
► Conflict was cultural—because the Sadducees favored Hellenization (Greek influence) and the Pharisees resisted it. ► Conflict was also legal-religious, with Sadducees stressing the importance of the Second Temple and worship in the Temple with its (non-daily) calendar of religious rites and services, while the Pharisees stressed the importance daily worship outside the Temple in synagogues, and the importance of other Mosaic laws and prophetic values. ► Another conflict, solely religious, involved different interpretations of the Torah (the first five books of the Bible) and how to apply it to current Jewish life, with the Sadducees accepting only the Written Torah and rejecting doctrines such as the Oral Torah (traditions and teachings handed down by word of mouth) and certain doctrines like the Resurrection of the Dead.
BATTLE WITH OTHER GROUPS
► OPPOSED TO THE ESSENES: The Dead Sea Scrolls suggest a clash of ideologies and social positions between the Essenes and the Sadducees. The Essenes began as a group of renegade Zadokites, which would suggest that the group itself had priestly, and thus Sadducean origins. The Dead Sea Scrolls suggest the Sadducees (Manasseh) and the Pharisees (Ephraim) became religious communities that were distinct from the Essenes, the true Judah. They suggest that the Essenes challenged the authenticity of the rule of the Sadducees, blaming the downfall of ancient Israel and the siege of Jerusalem on their impiety. The Dead Sea Scrolls brand the Sadduceean elite as those who broke the covenant with God in their rule of the Judean state, and so became targets of divine revenge. ► OPPOSED TO JESUS & CHRISTIANS: Saints Matthew and Mark describe the growing hostility of the Sadducees toward Jesus and His followers. These disputes show themselves on both theological and social levels. The Sadducees challenged Jesus over the belief in divine resurrection (Mt. 22:23-33). Jesus uses quotes from their Torah to overcome them and “Jesus answering, said to them: ‘You err, not knowing the Scriptures, nor the power of God’.” Jesus challenges the reliability of the Sadducees’ interpretation of Biblical doctrine, the authority of which enforces the power of the Sadduceean priesthood. St. Matthew depicts the Sadducees as “brood of Vipers,” and a perversion of the true Israel.
The Pharisees emerged as a distinct group shortly after the Maccabaean revolt, around 165–160 B.C. They are thought to be spiritual descendants of the Hasideans. The Pharisees were a party of laymen and scribes and very different to the Sadducees, (the party of the high priesthood that had traditionally provided the sole leadership of the Jewish people). Around 100 B.C., a long struggle began as the Pharisees tried to make the Jewish religion more of a democracy and remove it from the control of the Temple priests. The basic difference, that led to the split between the Pharisees and the Sadducees, lay in their different attitudes toward the Torah (the first five books of the Old Testament) and the problem of finding in it answers to questions about legal and religious matters in the circumstances of their day, which were far different from those of the time of Moses.

PHARISEE “QUICK FACTS” ► “Pharisee” is from the Hebrew “Perushim” (to separate oneself from or be a separatist). ► They resisted the Roman and Greek influences of the day (Hellenism), even separating themselves from “inferior” Jews, who did not hold the Pharisee’s high standards. ► They founded synagogues for additional prayer and study outside of the Temple. ► They were laymen, experts and teachers of the Torah (first 5 books of the Old Testament), ► They came mainly from the middle and lower classes. ► Known as “the strictest sect” of the Jews. ► Held in awe by the public, but, as a rule, but they did not join in their religious fervor. ► The general population of first-century Palestine did not live as Pharisees, nor as Sadducees, nor as Essenes. ► About 6,000 Pharisees in Herodian times.
WHAT’S THE FIGHTING ABOUT? When the Jews returned from their Babylonian exile to Jerusalem in 537 BC, they were without a king. Just as children will argue and fight when parents are absent, so too did the Jews without a king. ► Conflict was cultural—because the Sadducees favored Hellenization (Greek influence) and the Pharisees resisted it. ► Conflict was also legal-religious, with Sadducees stressing the importance of the Second Temple with its religious rites and services, and the Pharisaical emphasis on the importance of other Mosaic laws and prophetic values. ► Another conflict, specifically religious, involved different interpretations of the Torah and how to apply it to current Jewish life, with the Sadducees accepting only the Written Torah and rejecting doctrines such as the Oral Torah and the Resurrection of the Dead. Pharisees claimed prophetic or Mosaic authority for their interpretation of Jewish laws, while the Sadducees represented the authority of the priestly privileges and prerogatives established since the days of Solomon, when Zadok, their ancestor, officiated as High Priest.
THE FIGHT BETWEEN JESUS AND THE PHARISEES
The priestly Sadducees held the written Torah was the only source of revelation, the laymen Pharisees held to the principle of evolution in the Law; men must use their reason to interpret the Torah and applying it to current problems. The Pharisees believed that the Law that God gave to Moses was twofold, consisting of the Written Law and the Oral Law—teachings of the prophets and the oral traditions of the Jewish people—interpreting the Law according to its spirit. Though they did influence politics greatly, the Pharisees were not mainly a political party, but a group of scholars and religious devotees. They enjoyed a large popular following and appear as spokesmen for the majority of the population. The Pharisees insisted that God could and should be worshiped even away from the Temple and outside Jerusalem. To the Pharisees, worship consisted not in bloody sacrifices—the practice of the Temple priests—but in prayer and in the study of God’s law. This is why the Pharisees fostered the SynAGOGuE as an institution of religious worship, outside and separate from the Temple. The synagogue may thus be considered a Pharisaic institution, since the Pharisees developed its growth, and raised it to its high importance in Jewish religious life. The traditional Catholic finds much in common with the Pharisee—like the Pharisee, they are laymen who want to preserve the Faith in a kind of “Exile among Modernism.” They devote themselves to prayer and study of the Faith. They have the right principles, but they must apply those principles correctly and not become inflated with pride, to the point where they indirectly and unwittingly work against the Faith that they love and wish to preserve.
The Pharisees were not in principle bad people. They had the principles to be good, but they did not use their principles correctly. They were pious, observant of the Law of God, and sought to please Him. But they were so observant of the Law that they became legalists. They made an absolute of outer forms and rites, carried out meticulously to the minimum detail. This led them to leave aside more important things, like the charity and mercy. Jesus does not question their authority to teach, nor their legitimacy; He does not call to disobedience. He only warns that their conduct is not to be imitated: “Do and observe all things whatsoever they tell you, but do not follow their example. For they preach but they do not practice” (Mt 23:3). Jesus says that true piety and religion goes beyond mere words. Actions speak louder than words. He quotes Isaias, saying: “And the Lord said: For as much as this people draw near Me with their mouth, and with their lips glorify Me, but their heart is far from Me, and they have feared Me with the commandment and doctrines of men” (Isa. 29:13; Mt. 15:8). Jesus emphasizes their incoherence. What they say is not false, but their works deny their words. The words are beautiful in the mouth of him who puts them into practice! To speak is easy, to act is more difficult. We speak much but we do little. Another defect that Jesus indicates is the double measure they had to judge the conduct of others. They tie up heavy burdens hard to carry and lay them on people’s shoulders, but they will not lift a finger to move them (Mt 23.4). We also easily accuse our brother of his or her faults and we do not see the beam that we have in our eye. Jesus said: Why do you notice the splinter in your brother’s eye, but do not perceive the wooden beam in your own eye? (Mt 7:3).

1 Becoming Little So That God Will Make Us Good
St Joseph & the Mystery of Christmas
Sermon on humbling yourself so Our Blessed Lord will better us. From the apparition of Sister Josefa Menendez. Be like Job. For more please visit http://www.audiosancto.org/sermon/201... & please say 3 Hail Mary's for the priest - Sensus Fidelium
God gives special graces to those whom He elects for special missions. After the role of the Mother of God, the most important office in God’s Plan is the role of St. Joseph: father to the Christ Child and protector of His most chaste mother. St. Joseph was born free of original sin, never committed actual sin, and made a vow of celibacy. After a time in Limbo, his body was assumed into Heaven. The Incarnation (Christmas) was always in the Mind of the God. Thus, He eternally predestined that His Son have a true Mother and a holy guardian. It is fitting that we honor Mary with hyperdulia and St. Joseph with protodulia. - Sensus Fidelium

Ad Orientem
A Day In The Life Of A Seminarian
The Church as a body faces East, awaiting the coming of the Lord. It is only fitting that in Her worship... She face East. - True Faith TV
The seminary of the Institute of Christ the King is located in an ancient chateau at Gricigliano in Tuscany, Italy. Located near Florence, it is only about 170 miles from the Eternal City -Rome -- and the Vatican. Named St. Phillip Neri Seminary, it is here that our priests receive the formation that prepares them to serve the Sovereign Priest. - Sensus Fidelium

A World Undone without Christmas
Feast of the Holy Innocents: A Call for Reflection and Conversion
Without Christmas, man destroys himself... whole nations and continents commit suicide... as is clearly evident in the nearly continuous stream of atheistic wars over the last two and half centuries... most notably World War I and World War II. Only when Christ is once again recognized as Our King, will these evils be averted.

St. Anthony's War Against Demons - Sacred Heart Publications
Saint Anthony of the Desert not only engaged in fierce battles against the devil through prayer and fasting, but they mocked, sneered and abused him. For his triumphs over the devil God promised that he would make his name known everywhere.
Holy Souls Are All Mystics & Contemplatives The Holy Souls in Purgatory know God in themselves. The minds are perfectly rectified. No more error. No more doubts. This makes them mystics: have mystical knowledge of God who is so near and yet unable to be seen face to face (which requires the gift of glory).
