A M E S S A G E FROM THE PRESIDENT
W
David Baron President
hat is Deering Bay? Deering Bay is different things for different people. For some it is home. For some it is a great place to have dinner and socialize. For others it is a place to play golf, tennis and work out. We try and give a personalized touch so that it is whatever you need it to be to make you happy. Whether you live on the property or outside the gate, we are all able to enjoy the Club and what it has to offer. We have about 140 members who live on property and almost 200 who are not residents. About $2,000 of each of our dues goes to the property owner’s association (MPOA) to assist them paying common area expenses like security and landscaping of the non-golf course areas. Whatever charges are incurred by the MPOA is paid by Club members as 44% of the charge. This percentage charge was established by the original developer and is a much higher charge than any other community like ours in the state; the norm is somewhere around 11%. The original developer also hindered the Club by not requiring all residents to be Club members. Those communities which require residents to be club members are very strong financially and also report higher resale values of residences than clubs which do not require residents to be members. Because of a desire to strengthen the Club and the community, the MPOA had initiated steps to develop a community membership for all its residents. They had engaged legal counsel (for which we pay 44%) and the Club worked with their attorney to develop a way for all residents to have a type of membership. Between the MPOA’s lawyer and the Club’s lawyer we had the workings of a great solution to this problem and Bruce Rubin, as a previous member of both the MPOA Board and the Club Board, was spearheading this effort. Unfortunately, at this time efforts to continue this project have been discontinued. This concept would have strengthened the residential community, increased property values, and secured the financial future of the Club. We are hopeful that the MPOA Board will come together for what is best for the community and the Club, and follow through on the community membership initiative. On another note, we are in the middle of a membership drive which asks that Club members suggest new members to our Membership Director, Laura Decker. You, as Club members, are our best sales people. Our golf course is in fantastic shape and our winter tournaments have been very competitive. Congratulations to Rudy Stern and Richard Pollack for winning the winter Member-Member, and to Jimmie Dresnick for capturing the President’s Cup and kudos to Faye Koniver and Sandy Halpern for capturing the Women’s Twin Trophy tournament. Our Club Championships are coming up on the weekend of April 22nd & 23rd for men, women, and super seniors, with the Club Senior Championship April 29th & 30th. A new tournament, a one day Men’s Member-Member-Guest, where you can team up with either another member or invite a guest, is scheduled for Friday, May 5th. A by-laws change ballot was sent out to all members a few weeks ago, asking you to support the Board’s recommendations giving social and tennis members some additional privileges. We are trying to increase our tennis membership and by giving tennis members some summer golf privileges we offer something that no tennis club can match. If you have lost your ballot, please stop by the office and fill one out as ballots must be submitted by Tuesday, April 18th to assist us with these membership initiatives. We are busy in our restaurant and the reviews on the menu are very positive. Some nights we experience service which may be slower than we want and is usually caused when an unexpected number of people show up without reservations. It helps all of us when members make reservations in advance and we appreciate your consideration in that regard. As always, if you have any questions or comments for me, please see me at the Club or via email at david@bhfloridalaw.com.
Best wishes and enjoy the great weather.

A N O T E FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER/COO
S
pring has sprung in April bringing us great weather and more day light, which lets you get in an extra round of golf or tennis!
It also brings us annual events such as: the Seder Dinner, Easter Brunch & Egg Hunt with a special appearance from the Easter Bunny, our annual theme party (with this year 80’s themed on Saturday, April 22nd), and one of the biggest events of the season in Women’s Golf, the Women’s Annual Member-Guest on Wednesday, April 19th and Thursday, April 20th. Try not to miss out for you will surely have a great time!
Karen Harmon General Manager/COO
To recap March, our Women’s Tennis Member-Guest had its best tournament to date! With beautiful weather and a court full of competitors we had two divisions of play based on the player combined USTA rating. The lower division, 6.0 - 6.5 was won by Pomy Lewis and her guest Miche Escanellas. The higher division, 7.0 7.5 was won by Carolina Matuk and her partner Jill Balli, who defeated the 2015 & 2016 champions Sherry Kranys and her partner Laura Herskowitz. Congratulations on a match well played and a special thank you to our tennis pros, Pedro Leon and Cheryl Porter for the tireless efforts in the success of the event and their everyday operations in the tennis department. Fun Fact: Women’s Round Robin is back! Please join Cheryl and your fellow members on the courts every Friday at 9AM! Last month also gave us another successful year of our annual audit. Results will be in by the end of the month and we will be sure to notify the entire membership when they are available for access. Thank you to our controller, Cynthia Villaverde, for once again leading the accounting department to this achievement. As a reminder, we will like to notify the entire membership that all ballots for the By-Law changes are due no later than Tuesday, April 18th if you have any questions towards the clarifications of the changes please feel free to stop by my office; my door is always open. There are only two months left to make sure you submit all your referrals to the Membership team no later than Thursday, June 1st. As you will see on the next page, we have added an extra incentive for those who have dedicated themselves to the success of the Club.
NEW ARRIVAL
Lastly, take advantage of all we have to offer and be sure to join us at the next Member Mixer, Wednesday, April 12th, 6:30pm; if you don’t have a babysitter for the evening, don’t worry, we have you covered with the first ever Kid’s Mixer happening at the same time. I look forward to seeing you around the Club.
Best,
Karen Harmon General Manager/COO
