A M E S S A G E FROM THE PRESIDENT
Happy spring to all of our members! The chilly temperatures have been a welcome surprise this season and have allowed us to keep refreshed while we enjoy our time on the links or courts. This month brings our Easter Brunch & Egg Hunt with a special appearance from the Easter Bunny. Also, we have our annual Anniversary Party, Club Championships, Women’s Annual Member-Guest Golf Tournament and more! With an array of events happening at the Club I would like to thank Karen and her staff who work diligently on a day-to-day basis to provide us with premier club experiences.
Larry Woerner President
If you have not been to the Club in some time, please note that our golf course continues to be in its most excellent condition to date. From prospective members to our own, the rave remains that we have the best playing conditions in all of South Florida - make sure to join us on the greens if you have not already done so. However, to keep the course and clubhouse in pristine condition, please be advised that we have some upcoming closure dates: Golf: Tuesday, Tuesday, Tuesday, Tuesday,
May 29th-Thursday, May 31st; reopening on Friday, June 1st at 12 pm June 19th-Thursday, June 21st; reopening on Friday, June 22nd at 12 pm August 7th-Thursday, August 9th; reopening on Friday, August 10th at 12 pm August 21st & 28th; reopening the following day at 12 am
Club Operations: Monday, July 9th-Thursday, July 19th; Clubhouse reopens on Friday, July 20th *The Fitness Center and classes will be available throughout these dates Lastly, we ask that you please fill your divots and ball marks and rake the bunkers if you have the luck to land in one. Also, I ask that we all continue to respect the course as we are very fortunate to have Jimmy Germana and his team working tirelessly to give us a great golfing experience. Members who have been with the Club for at least 15 years will have a pleasant surprise when they receive their April statement next month. The Longevity Initiative charges will expire for those who have paid this for the required five years. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact our Member Billing Specialist, Kathy Villamizar at 305.964.4044 or memberbilling@dbycc.com. At the time of this writing, the Club has collected $1,221,265.75 (of which about half has been spent), of the Hurricane Irma Assessment with a balance of $27,705.00 that is yet to be received. We have worked with several adjusters and have obtained an estimate of $300-$400k in roof repairs. Other repairs that still need to be made include repair of a) some parking lot lights b) water intrusion from the damaged roof c) damage caused to the parking lot and d) damage on the tennis courts - windscreens, awnings and the maintenance cart. These additional repairs are estimated to cost around $100K-$130K which will leave us with around $100-$150k in excess funds. Once all the hurricane-related repairs are completed, the Board will decide what to do with these funds. If any member has any questions or would like some clarification kindly visit Karen Harmon, our General Manager, and she will be happy to explain in full detail where the funds are being distributed. For the first time in over a decade, we have completed a Capital Reserve Study that has allowed us to determine the lifespan of our equipment and maintenance of the Club. This will help in the physical and financial analysis of the budgeting process for the coming years. The Board had an incredible brainstorming meeting on the future of the Club with a few key members of Troon’s senior team and Chris Meyers, Principal of Meyers + Associates Architecture. Chris is an experienced architect who has assisted many clubs in renovating their clubhouses and facilities. Many great ideas surfaced, and Chris has prepared initial renderings with some preliminary ideas. As we have communicated, we will be sharing APRIL 2018 • 4
these initial thoughts in Capital Improvement Workshops to be held on April 19th and 20th. I strongly encourage all of you to sign up for one of these sessions for you to see where your Club is going and provide you the opportunity to provide your reactions to these ideas. As part of our overall Capital Improvement Plan, we will be looking at our funding options — which will only be implemented if the Membership votes to move forward. Our plan is to be able to present a comprehensive plan with the related funding approach later this year. I look forward to seeing everyone at the Club. Take advantage of all we have to offer and be sure to join us at our next Member Mixer on Wednesday, April 11th at 6:30 pm.
Best Regards,
Larry Woerner President lwoerner54@yahoo.com

A N O T E FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER/COO
L
et’s get hopping into spring here at Deering Bay for April! Our weather has been fantastic with more daylight and cool temperatures so you can take advantage of a beautiful sunset dinner on our Golf Terrace as well as get in an extra round of golf or tennis!
Karen Harmon General Manager/ COO
We are gearing up for Summer Camp, and as in previous years we are offering you choices; first with our traditional Summer Camp and second with our Golf Workshops. Parents and guardians will want to flip to the next page and get all the details as both camps are becoming increasingly popular the past few years! We have limited space, so make sure to sign up today! Last month brought us several annual tournaments that were all well received by both members and guests alike. From golf to tennis, I would like to thank all of the participants and staff who made it all possible. Take a look below at our winners: • • • •
Sonnia Viyella & Susan Silver, 7.0-7.5 Women’s Tennis Member-Guest Pomy Lewis & Miche Escanellas, 6.5-6.5 Women’s Tennis Member-Guest Jon Hoffman & Ethan Shapiro, Men’s Golf Spring Member-Member Karen Baron & Debra Frank, Women’s Golf Twin Trophy
Congratulations to all on your accomplishments and here’s to many, many more! The competition doesn’t end here though! This month we will play host to several major tournaments this season. Starting off with our Women’s Club Championship on the 4th and 5th, Women’s Annual Member-Guest Golf Tournament on the 18th and 19th and Men’s – Senior, Super and Super-Super Senior Club Championship’s beginning the weekend of the 21st. In regards to dining and social events, please note that we have rescheduled Dueling Pianos for Friday, May 4th. However, I strongly encourage everyone to attend our Anniversary Party this month (with a Sunset Beach Party theme) on the 21st and join us as we celebrate 28 years of Deering Bay poolside with great entertainment, food, and beverages. Over the past few months, you have received several communications in regards to the Hurricane Irma Assessment and resale list. I strongly encourage any member whom may have questions about how the dollars are being spent or how the resale list may affect your position on the list, to please come and see me. I maintain an open door policy and I’m willing to explain all supporting documents and materials to give you a better understanding of what’s happening to your Club and the precautions we have taken to ensure its sustainability. In fact, we have contracted Chris Meyers of Meyers & Associates to assist the Club with developing ideas for upgrading and improving our clubhouse and facilities. Please refer to the emails sent on 3/24 and 3/29 for more information. I hope to see as many of you as possible at our capital improvement workshops that take place this month on the 19th and 20th. In closing, the past eight months has been a learning experience for of us all. Since the arrival of TROON our staff, including those in leadership roles, have been able to use their tools for training and development. TROON continues to stand by their commitment in helping us achieve new levels of service for our members and guests alike. I’m confident that they will continue taking us towards the right track to where we will be recognized on a national level. On behalf of the entire staff, we look forward to their continued efforts and are excited for what is yet to come.
All the best,

ello Deering Bay Family! Spring has officially arrived and soon enough we will be entering the summer months in sunny South Florida. Please make sure to clear your calendar for our anniversary party, scheduled for April 21st. Max and his team will be putting on a Sunset Beach Party theme for all of you to celebrate 28 years of Deering Bay.
John Gale Director of Mktg. & Membership
In the past several months we have welcomed new members to the Club, hosted multiple golf tournaments and social functions. One of our most successful events was our PXG Demo Day Social. We also launched strategic marketing partnerships with the Miami Heat, Miami Marlins and Living by the Sea. This month we will be hosting the Miami Heat Foundation Golf Tournament. Looking forward to the future, we will be adding positive changes to our membership structure as well as continued increase in membership. Dave Ragan and I will be working on having a Pro/Am Golf Tournament that will help put our Club on the map aside from all the other marketing initiatives in play. We are also providing Gables by the Sea residents with an opportunity to visit the Club on Earth Day and experience what Deering Bay has to offer. I am very proud of what we have been able to accomplish in a short period of time. However, I am a believer there is always room for improvement. So we appreciate our members’ constructive feedback. Thank you to those who have taken the time to participate in our Membership Committee meetings. We will be working hard these next few months to provide our members with a fantastic 2018-2019! Please remember that all of our April events are available to review via the Club’s website calendar, social media sites, DBYCC e-mails, and Community Boards. A special congratulations goes to…
COLIN O’REILLY who is the winner of the Membership Ambassador Raffle for March. Mr. O’Reilly, thank you for your referral. Please see Daniella or myself in the Membership Office to receive your prize of a Brunch for two with mimosas or a Golf Foursome. Have a wonderful month and I look forward to seeing everyone around the Club!
