A M E S S A G E FROM THE PRESIDENT

J

anuary flew by and we are entering the second and shortest month of the year. The weather has been crisp but not too cold and the Club has continued to be busy and full of life. Our staff has been gaining so much knowledge through their hospitality training over the past few weeks and they are on a service improvement mission to provide you with the best experience the Club has to offer.

Larry Woerner President

This past October, the Board authorized an operating assessment to cover the costs of repairing the damage and related clean-up caused by Hurricane Irma. At that time, the Board committed to complete transparency on amounts received and how they are being used. Assessments ranged from $950 - $3,700 based on membership type. To date, the Club has collected $1.063M from the $1.2M billed. Those members that are in arrears have been contacted by the Club’s Administration and the unpaid assessment is included in the amounts owed to the Club. If you are part of this small minority, please fulfill your membership commitment and resolve any pending payments. Thus far we have spent $583K on repairs on a variety of items. At this stage, most (about 85%) has been spent on cleanup and repair of the damage to the golf course. After yeoman efforts by Jimmy Germana and his team, our course is in pristine condition and has never been better — kudos again to this fabulous effort. In addition to expenditures on the course, we have made repairs for some of the damage done to our tennis facility, repaired chillers and pool heaters, repaired damage done to awnings and windows and covered food spoilage. We still have some pending repairs to make in the tennis facility and the clubhouse – most importantly the clubhouse roof. Almost certainly we will need to replace our roof and we want to do this before we enter the next rainy/hurricane season. It is possible that we will have a viable insurance claim to cover some of the cost of the new roof. The Club has brought in a Public Adjuster to help with the pending resolution of the roof insurance claim. Undoubtedly the resolution of any insurance claim will take considerable time so the Board is considering using the assessment funds to cover the cost of the new roof. If and when we receive any payments related to our insurance coverage, any received amounts will be returned to the Hurricane Irma assessment fund. I reiterate our commitment to be completely transparent and we will keep the membership fully apprised of the expenditures for remaining repairs and the resolution of our insurance issue. Depending on the resolution of the insurance claim, there may be an excess of funds available, the use of which will be determined by the Board. Your Board has spent some time on a leadership retreat to brainstorm and work on the future of the Club, beginning with the process for a needed Strategic Plan and Process Improvements. Many discussions were held on topics like: financial insights, marketing ideas, social media reach, property management, ongoing and future projects. This was a great event for the future of Deering Bay. Did you know that you have the opportunity to travel to other private golf clubs all around the world? If you are a Full Golf Member, in good standing, you can take advantage of the many Troon Prive/ Privilege benefits programs. As a member of a Troon Privé-managed club, you will soon have exclusive access to receive Troon Privé Connect, a digital magazine developed specifically for the private clubs, as well as access to experience packages through Privileged Connections and premium tickets to sporting and concert events at the best price. Qualified members receive reciprocal access to other Troon Privé-managed clubs for just a cart fee, and up to 50% off at Troon Golf-managed resort and daily fee facilities around the world. Please visit https://www.troon.com/troon-prive-privilege/ for more information. As always, if you have any questions, comments or concerns about anything at the Club, if you think you have a great idea you think the members will love or if you just want to chat, you are more than welcome to do so by reaching me at lwoerner54@yahoo.com.

Best Regards,

Larry Woerner

A N O T E FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER/COO

W

hat a great start to a new year! 2018 has already shown lots of promise in being a year full of excitement for many reasons. My hope for each of our members is that you can enjoy the variety of activities and amenities at your Club.

Karen Harmon General Manager/ COO

February is jam-packed with so many exciting events...here are a few to mention. Bring out your competitive side and come watch your favorite teams battle it out during our annual Super Bowl Watch Party on the 4th. The Annual Cancer Link Golf Tournament will be held on the 8th in support of Breast Cancer research. Our Valentine’s Day Dinner & Dance is a guaranteed sell-out, as it is every year, so make sure to make a reservation for you and your special someone immediately. The Men’s Member-Guest tournament begins on the 22nd, and this is one of our premier golf events each year. What better way to showcase the Club to a friend or family member than inviting them to help you compete for a grand prize? As in previous years, we will be open for lunch, golf and tennis on Monday, February 19th in honor of Presidents’ Day. Moving on to some general Club rules. There have been several communications sent in regards to the dress code (clubhouse, dining and golf) and a specific communication sent last month in regards to the parking situation. As we continue to enforce the dress code, please familiarize yourself and guests of what attire is deemed acceptable and unacceptable at the Club. As always, if you have a question about an article of clothing please refer to the House Rules that may be found on the Club’s website or see a member of our management team. Also, management continues to see an uptick of Club goers who are still parking on assigned spaces designated for those who are disabled/handicapped and vehicles that park on the valet ramp. If you need to have a closer parking space assigned to you, please see me so we may discuss your options, I’ll be happy to help. And please note that the valet ramp is always an active working area and that no vehicle or golf cart should ever be parked there. In an effort to continually look for ways to improve our service and facilities for the benefit of our members and guests, I’m happy to announce that our staff has successfully completed training presented by Troon. The training entitled, “A Culture of Hospitality”, reinforced to our staff the purpose of what it means to be hospitable in a Club environment for the enjoyment of the members and staff alike. As always, I ask for your comments and opinions on how we are doing, and what we can do better. Also, please help me in welcoming a new member to the Deering Bay Family. Max Polo has joined our building maintenance crew and will be assisting Erik Ruiz and Leo Anguiano in the up keep of the Club. As in the past years and months, time is something that tends to fly. So it’s always great to be ahead of the game in “What’s Happening Next ON THE BAY?” here are a few highlights of what is to come: • Art Exhibit Luncheon: Friday, March 2nd Join fellow member, Jeanie Duck, in this exclusive luncheon where she discusses portraits of the diverse habitats and organisms that live within the Biscayne National Park. • Women’s Tennis Member-Guest: Thursday, March 8th Who will take home the trophy this year? Invite a guest and join us on the courts for mimosas, lunch, prizes and most importantly, a great game of tennis with a friend or family member. • Summer Camp Registration: Thursday, March 15th Don’t miss your opportunity to register soon in order to secure your child’s spot, and don’t forget, all attendees receive a copy of the annual Summer Camp Yearbook highlighting all of the “awesomeness” they experience. I hope to see everyone around the Club, either at one of our events or stopping by my office to say hello. My door is always open!

All the best,

Karen Harmon General Manager/COO FEBRUARY 2018 • 6

ello Deering Bay Family! We are off to a fast start in 2018 with social events and membership programs. The Membership Department has received numerous referrals from our amazing members. Just a friendly reminder that our Membership Ambassador Referral Circle (MARC) program runs until February 28, 2018. This program provides an opportunity for our members to receive a credit on their annual dues for every referral that converts to a membership. There is also a fun contest going on now that is related to the MARC program. The member with the most referrals by the end of the program will receive a very special prize! Please take note of the Leader Board located in the Membership Office. Who is going to win???

John Gale Director of Mktg. & Membership

Later in the month, we will be sending an email to all of our members asking for volunteers for a variety of programs. We need members who will like to volunteer as Golf Ambassadors, Member Ambassadors, and Membership Committee members. If you have an interest in any of these categories please let Daniella or I know. We want all prospective members to meet other members during a tour or golf game. We had an amazing social event last month. Our PXG Demo Social event drew a big crowd on a beautiful South Florida Saturday. Golf enthusiasts came out to enjoy a putting contest while listening to live rock tunes. David Katz, from ZYR Vodka, was on hand providing tastings of his award-winning vodka. I also cannot forget to mention Concrete Beach Brewery provided ice cold beer on tap. Overall it was a fun-filled day that our members in attendance truly enjoyed. We have another great event planned for Saturday, February 17th. It is our first annual Family Field Day! So mark your calendars for a day filled with family joy. A special congratulations goes to…

COACH MANNY DIAZ who is the winner of the Membership Ambassador Raffle for the Month of January. Coach Diaz, thank you for your referral. Please see Daniella or myself in the Membership Office to receive your prize of a Brunch for two with mimosas or a Golf Foursome.

Until next time! See you around the Club!
