A M E S S A G E FROM THE PRESIDENT
O
ur members travel more in the summer than any other time of the year, and with some of the hottest days of the summer coming up, I am sure many of you are away as you are reading this issue of our newsletter. Just thinking about my friends who are members and who are enjoying cooler weather, I can think of a number of you who are in the following states - Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Connecticut, California, Colorado, South and North Carolina, New York, and I am sure I am missing at least a half dozen or more states where members are on vacation. To say nothing of those of you who are traveling abroad or are on cruises. I know at least a few of you have just returned from Israel and some from British Isles.
David Baron President
For those of us left behind the two weeks of solid rain we had in June has left everything very green and the golf course is recovering nicely from the second summer aerification. In speaking with Jimmy Germana, Director of Grounds, he tells me that he is very happy with the way the course is recovering and has no doubt that the course will be in better condition this coming year than in 2016. Our main concern with the course is the bunkers. The linings which were replaced about 10 years ago are nearing the end of their expected life and need to be redone. This will probably be done next summer and will not require that the course be closed as bunkers will be redone in stages and the work would be done over the course of several weeks. I want to welcome our new Membership Director, John Gale, who will be starting with us today. John’s background is in sales and as I have said to you on many occasions, you, the members, are our best sales representatives. An increase in our membership of 20 new golf members would be great and hopefully some of our summer members will elect to stay on in the fall. As one new employee starts work, I am very sad to report that one departs. Chef Luke Livingston, who has done a fantastic job during his years at the Club, has accepted a position at Indian Creek and will be leaving when the Club closes in mid-July for it’s annual summer refresh project. Not only is Luke an excellent chef but he made a point of learning the personal tastes of our members, and upgraded the entire dining experience. I want to assure all of you that I did all I could to convince Luke to stay and while he loves Deering Bay and was clearly torn about leaving, he has three young children and a long commute and felt that the change was a life style change for him and his family. Trust me, I love his cooking and if it was just a question of money…

Some of you may not know but the University of Miami is one of our corporate members and over the years we have had a number of their coaches as members. Perhaps our longest tenured UM coaching member is Coach Katie Meier, the women’s basketball coach. For those of you who don’t know Coach Meier, she has been an NCAA coach of the year and her team is a perennial NCAA tournament participant. Coach Meier was an All American basketball player at Duke and is a member of both the Duke and UM Halls of Fame. UM Athletic Director Blake James, the Canes AD since 2013, is also a club member who occasionally finds time to play golf at the Club. Head football Coach and former Canes quarterback, Mark Richt, is a Club member, as is his assistant, Defensive Coordinator, Manny Diaz, who is a new member. Manny is a Miami native and his father is the former Mayor of Miami, and someone I played softball with when we were in law school. Finally, Jennifer Strawley, the Assistant Athletic Director and a former Penn Quaker softball star, is a member who plays golf at Deering. Last and certainly not least, former UM President Donna Shalala is a member who can be seen playing and dining at the Club. I know we have a lot of Canes supporters at Deering and you should let these coaches and administrators know it is all about the U. No doubt we have Gators and Seminoles lurking in our weeds, but for those of us who are Canes, it is a pleasure to have so many of our Canes at Deering Bay.
There is a new golf tournament which will be played this November over Veteran’s Day weekend. It will be a three day tournament, with all club members invited to participate. You will be able to play as many of the three days as you want—Friday, Saturday and Sunday, November 10-12. The Club will be divided into two teams, which will play against each other, with cocktails and meals. Donations from all participants will go towards a Veteran’s charity. This will be a great way to enjoy golf, camaraderie, Club spirit and raise money for people who have done so much for our country. Details will follow over the next few months from the Golf Pro Shop. As of July 1 we are working with Troon to make Deering Bay the best club in South Florida. Some of our members have already taken advantage of the golf opportunities Troon offers us at far away destinations— some of the top courses in the country. As always, if you have any questions, feel free to reach out to me at david@bhfloridalaw.com.
Best regards,
David Baron President

I will also like to remind everyone of the need to continually grow our membership. As you visit with family and friends this summer and come across someone who may be interested in joining the Club, please let us know if we can help by sending an invitation. We recently had a very successful ambassador program where a lot of guests enjoyed the Club for a complimentary month. Many of those guests have now converted into either a summer membership or an equity membership. Keep in mind we are still promoting the Summer Membership until the end of July, with full amenities until October 31st. Please see me for more information. A special congratulations goes to‌
MARIA MCDONALD Who is the winner of the Membership Ambassador Raffle for the Month of June. Maria, thank you for your referral. Please see me in the Membership Office to receive your prize of a Mini Brunch for two with mimosas or a Golf Foursome. To all, have a great summer and I hope to see you around the Club.

Connor Mullins Connor and his teammates won a gold medal in the Scholastic Rowing Association of America National Championship, which took place in Pennsauken, New Jersey. The boys won in the freshman quad category. They row for Belen Jesuit Preparatory School. Belen has one of the premiere rowing programs in the country, particularly in the varsity lightweight 8 category, but this is the first national gold medal in a freshman category.

ongratulations to the Deering Bay Yacht & Country Club’s Jr. Interclub team. Runner-up for the 2017 South Florida Junior Interclub Season! The Interclub roster of clubs included La Gorce, Riviera, Trump Doral and Deering Bay. The event featured each club hosting a point accumulation event, with 12 player representatives from each club participating. At stake, a perpetual trophy! The team included Pam Ascobereta, Ben Blackburn, Beckett Castro, Massimo Del Rio, Lucas Laya, Tomas Laya, Briana Marshall, John Marshall Jr., A.J. Perez, Morgan Powell, Alexandra Ragan, David Ragan IV, Joshua Solesbury and Lucas Villanueva.
David “Dave” Ragan III Head Golf Professional
Deering Bay’s Junior Interclub team earned its highest place in match history earning runner-up status with outstanding play throughout the spring, placing high in three of four matches. This season’s team was in striking distance to eventual winner and defending champion Trump Doral. We had a mix of new and experienced players, including Joshua Solesbury, John Marshall Jr., Lucas and Tomas Laya who have now been a part of several successful junior interclub teams with Deering Bay. We have a growing junior program here at the Club! With valuable experience gained this season and all of our team returning, 2018 could be the year to host the trophy. “We had a lot of fun this season. That’s what it’s all about,” – David Ragan IV Players turned out to represent their clubs and gained some valuable experience in a fun environment. Age divisions included boys and girls 9-11, 12-14 and 15-18, each with designated tees. I would like to thank everyone that participated in the 2017 Junior Interclub Season. The league brings juniors together from the four private Miami area clubs. The goal is to instill in our juniors honesty, respect and sportsmanship as we grow the game of golf. The Interclub would not be a success without the help of the dedicated parents and local golf professionals. I look forward to another great year in 2018!
Regards,
Dave Ragan III Head Golf Professional

Conundrum, White Blend, CA, 2014 “I’m not part of the “Anything But Chardonnay” (ABC) movement. Two chardonnays were coming to mind as the paring for this dish but I do like to mix it up with my white wines and one of the best ways to do so is with a blend such as the Conundrum, 2015. This displays notes of peach, gala apple and citrus with a soft finish.” -Max Miranda, Director of Food & Beverage
