A M E S S A G E FROM THE PRESIDENT

A

s we settle into summer, your Club is taking the opportunity for a breather and is going to undergo some regularly scheduled maintenance and upkeep on the golf course as well as the clubhouse. Please check the Club’s calendar to become acquainted with our summer hours.

Larry Woerner President

We bid farewell to Karen Harmon at the end of June. Karen is moving on to the west coast of Florida with her family – I thoroughly enjoyed working with Karen over these last seven years and will miss her dedication, professionalism and sense of humor. Deering Bay is a better place because of Karen — she should be justifiably proud of her tremendous contributions to our Club. The Board is in the process of interviewing candidates for the General Manager (GM) position. We hope to announce our new GM sometime in July. As this process continues, we are fortunate enough to have Tina Policarpo serving as Interim General Manager. Tina Policarpo is the Director of Operations at the Lake of Isles, a sister Troon course, and she was willing to assist us during this transition. Tina has years of experience in club operations and will ensure that Deering Bay continues to function smoothly. I was personally thrilled with the results of the member vote, with over 75% of votes cast in favor of introducing the Capital Assessment. The first charge will appear on everyone’s July statement (sent out in August). This favorable vote will permit us to look to the future of the Club and make it even better for current members as well as help attract the next generation of membership. With such positive feedback, in September we will re-engage in the process of developing the formal plans for Phase 1 of the Capital Improvements project. We will select the architect who will be responsible for developing the final plans. This process will be open and collaborative as we share the evolving plans with our membership. The goal is to have the improvements plan finalized in the fall and begin the needed permitting, selection of General Contractor and planning process through the end of the year. Construction would then occur in the summer and fall of 2019. We will also share the financing plans with membership as they evolve. For those of you spending the summer soaking up the sun in Miami, I look forward to seeing you at the Club! For those in cooler climates, please enjoy your summer and we look forward to seeing everyone back this fall.

Best Regards,

Larry Woerner President lwoerner54@yahoo.com

A N O T E FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER/COO

A

t the time of this writing, my seven years at the Club will soon come to a close. I would like to extend my gratitude one last time for the fantastic opportunity I was given to serve as General Manager/COO to one of the best memberships I have ever worked for and the incredible staff that made the success of the Club possible. Thank you all for the kind words and wishes as my family and I move onto the next chapter of our lives.

As mentioned in Mr. Woerner’s article, please help me in welcoming your Interim General Manager, Tina Policarpo. In my last week of managing the Club, I’ve had the pleasure of showing Tina around and I can confidently say, you are all in great hands. Tina’s Karen Harmon charismatic attitude and positivity will be a real asset to the Club as the Board continues General Manager/COO their search for a new General Manager/COO. I am also assisting with and genuinely thrilled to have been involved in the process. I have met with a few potential candidates, and I’m confident that the Board will make the best decision as to who is the best fit for Deering Bay. Club member Eileen Lamchick and colleague Ronnie Jacobson embarked on a new quest three years ago. They formed a company called, Sunshine Productions. They chose that name because they are both from the Sunshine State. On Sunday, June 10th, they were at the Tony awards and were thrilled to hear that a show that they helped co-produce, Once On This Island, won Best Revival Of A Musical. They are not resting on their past laurels, as they are currently co-producing two other Broadway Productions, Gettin’ The Band Back Together and Diana, the Musical. Join me in congratulating Mrs. Lamchick on this fantastic accomplishment and wishing her success in the near future. The Club and golf course will be closed from Monday, July 9th-Thursday July 19th for our annual summer refresh project. As many of you know, throughout these dates we make various much-needed improvements around the Club, conduct staff training and work on new menu items to expand your palate options to name a few. The fitness center and classes will be available throughout these dates, so make sure to join us to continue/ start working on the healthier version of you. In closing, I would like to thank everyone one last time. I hope the future has nothing, but great things in store for all. Although I will not be nearby, I would like to treat this “goodbye” as a see you later! Deering Bay will always be something that I can look back on with no regrets and all smiles. Thank you all for the best seven years.

All the best – for one last time,

Karen Harmon General Manager/CCO

WELCOME!

n today’s market, there are now various options of beef for us to consume. Grass-fed, Grain finished, Naturally raised and Organic.

Most cattle are raised consuming grass from pastures although only some are specifically raised and more importantly finished on grass never consuming grain. All of these specific classifications may not be given antibiotics or growth hormones.

John Gray Executive Chef

Grass-fed means that the entire life of the cattle has only been allowed grass or foraged hay or sugar beets. Grain finished is the same except at the end of its growth cycle the animal has been fed grain. Naturally raised means it has not been given any antibiotics or growth hormones and can be grain or grass raised and finished. Organic beef has been raised without the use of antibiotics or growth hormones and can be fed either grass or grain as long as its feed is 100 % organic. Here at the Club, we are currently using naturally raised grain finished Niman Ranch beef. We recently featured a grass-fed beef and with excellent results as far as guest satisfaction. However, the grass fed and finished beef is typically 25-30 % higher cost, but as we know the health benefits are substantial and we don’t need to eat beef every day! Below are some of the benefits you can expect from grass-fed beef.

Best Regards,

John Gray Executive Chef j.gray@dbycc.com
