A M E S S A G E FROM THE PRESIDENT
W
e are almost halfway through 2018, and soon we will be welcoming the summer months. Our summer hours of operation begin next month, so keep an eye out for this year’s Summer Guide or flip over to page eight to see what’s to come.
Larry Woerner President
On April 19th and 20th we held a series of seven Capital Improvement Workshops with well over 100 members attending. I would like to thank everyone who took time out of their day to participate in one of these workshops and provide your comments and suggestions. The workshops were led by Chris Meyers, the architect from Meyers & Associates that we hired to help develop our initial plans, and Cindy Anderson, Senior VP of Clubhouse Design & Development at Troon who has been directly involved in dozens of clubhouse renovations and expansions for Troon-managed facilities (several of which are located in South Florida). Within the next few days, the preliminary plans will be available on the Deering Bay website along with a mechanism for providing your comments and suggestions. I encourage all members to visit the site and see what your new Club could be! During these sessions, as well as during the Town Hall held on April 26th, I presented our preliminary ideas on how to fund these needed improvements. This will require a Capital Assessment which will need to be voted on by our equity members in good standing. The Board will be discussing this important topic and we hope to have a concrete proposal to share with membership by the end of this month. Stay tuned! Wish you could let everyone know how great it is to be a member of Deering Bay Yacht & Country Club? For a limited time only we are bringing back the Membership Ambassador Referral Circle (MARC), introducing a new Young Executive program and bringing you the best Associate (formally known as Social) membership South Florida has to offer. Those guests you always used to invite can now have the full experience and take the plunge as members of the Club. We have been working very closely with our membership department to come up with the best way to promote the Club to offer to a broader audience so they can see what all the fuss is about! Several factors go into play in regards to the above, so please see John or Daniella in the Front Office for more information. Our annual audit has been completed by RSM, our external auditors. The Audited Financial Statements are available on the private side of our website under Club Resources. Also – to keep everyone informed – the Board has approved the project to replace our clubhouse roof and finalize repairs of internal water damage. The roof project will cost around $350,000 and will be funded out of available reserves in our Hurricane Irma Assessment Fund (current balance slightly below $600,000). Whatever claim we eventually get from our Citizen’s Insurance coverage (a slow process!) will replenish the Hurricane Irma reserve account. As mentioned above, summer will be here soon. Don’t forget that Deering Bay offers Summer Camp & Golf Workshops not only for our membership but their guests as well. This is an excellent time for our junior members to practice and perfect their swing or even enjoy some time by the pool. One final note — I have been informed by some of our members that they were able to claim, as a tax deduction, the Operating Assessment paid in 2017 related to Hurricane Irma. You may want to check with your tax advisor/accountant to see what, if any, impact this may have on your 2017 tax return. I hope everyone has a fantastic month, and for those leaving us soon for the summer months, safe travels!
Best Regards,

A N O T E FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER/COO
A
s the season winds down, I sit here and reflect on the past year and what a crazy 12 months it has been. One year ago I donated my kidney to one of my best friends. I am so happy to report that she is still doing great and able to live a healthy life. It is indeed heartwarming to have and have had such support from our members and my incredible staff. Thank you so much! Thank you to all of the members that took the time to come and attend the Capital Improvement Workshops. Chris Meyers our Architect and Cindy Anderson, Vice President of Clubhouse Design & Development with Troon, have worked tirelessly to create some great ideas to enhance the Clubhouse. Although it may happen in phases, it sure will be exciting to see how the Club can be transformed. I for one am super excited and it has been a pleasure to work with them.
Karen Harmon General Manager/ COO
New beginnings also come in the form of goodbyes and DBYCC had to bid farewell to a great member of our team for the past two years. Dan Stover, who was instrumental in Jimmy Germana’s team has left Deering Bay to pursue new endeavors. Good luck to you Dan, we will certainly miss you! In the same breath, we welcome back Dominic “Dom” Del Ricco back into the golf department! Seeing Dom’s smiling face every day is so delightful! His specific responsibilities as one of our Assistant Golf Professionals will be in leading our junior golf program and taking it to new heights. A special thank you to Nicole in our Pro Shop, as she diligently works around the clock to make sure that we can provide the membership with the most exquisite style of apparel and equipment on the market. Continually meeting with representatives, Nicole makes it her mission to get these products at the best value there is. We had a great month in the golf department. Each tournament brought something new and fresh to the table. Congratulations to the Winners: Women’s Member-Guest: Sandy Collins, Sandy Halpern, Lisa Susi, & Kerry Whitaker Women’s Club Champion: Geraldine Blakely (Gross) & Willie Siert (A Flight - Net) Men’s Club Champion: Cameron Tallon (Gross), David Baron (A Flight - Gross) & Jeff Wechsler (A Flight - Net) Men’s Super-Senior Champion: Jeff Katz (Gross) & Paul Cummings (Net) Men’s Super-Super Senior Champion: Richard Griesemer (Gross) & Rod Borden (Net) Men’s Senior Club Champion: Jimmy Dresnick (Champion), Bruce Lamchick (Net) Our condolences continue to be with our Head Golf Professional, Dave Ragan III who, this past March, lost his father Dave Ragan Jr. who was an accomplished American professional golfer. Ragan Jr.’s career span was over two decades, and he was the recipient of several prestigious awards in the industry. A foundation has been established by his son, Ragan III in honor of his late father. The foundation named the Dave Ragan Jr. Memorial Fund under the Coral Gables Community Foundation has been created to support youth development and educational opportunities through golf. Please visit, http://gablesfoundation.org/giving/donate/ for more information. As we gear up for summer, it’s an excellent time for us to experiment and get creative in the kitchen! Under the direction of Max, Jorge and Chef John we are working on planning quality training sessions for the staff and refreshing new menus and flavors to keep you coming back all season long. In closing, I would like to remind the membership that as the years go on and the demand for business increases, there is entirely no way that we can succeed without an incredible team. I would like to extend my sincerest of thanks to the entire staff for executing all of the additional responsibilities it takes to keep the Club afloat on a yearly, monthly and especially daily basis. No matter how big or small the challenge may be, our team is truly dedicated to being the best they can for the betterment of the Club. Thank you again to all the members for being so cooperative and for giving your input in helping the Club reach its maximum potential. We are excited to start this new chapter as the summer season begins.
All the best,
Karen Harmon, General Manager/CCO k.harmon@dbycc.com

pril was a busy month in meeting prospective members and strategizing for the future. With our Board’s approval, we have made some changes to our membership structure. To streamline our membership and provide longevity to the Club we made two specific changes. The Young Executive Membership has been extended from age 39 to 44. We have also introduced an Associate Membership that provides annual tennis and limited summer golf. For more detailed information, please feel free to contact the Membership Department.
John Gale Director of Mktg. & Membership
I also want to note that our Membership Ambassador Referral Circle (M.A.R.C.) generated a lot of interest in membership. The program was very successful, and I am pleased to announce that our Board has extended the program until June 30th. Please flip to the next page for additional information. Last month we hosted several families from Gables by the Sea. These families had an opportunity to enjoy the Club and see the renderings of our Club’s planned renovations. As you can imagine there was a lot of excitement and interest to join Deering Bay. We plan to do similar events within the Deering Bay community and nearby neighborhoods. A special congratulations goes to…
CHRIS ARMSTRONG who is the winner of the Membership Ambassador Raffle for April. Mr. Armstrong, thank you for your referral. Please see Daniella or myself in the Membership Office to receive your prize of a Brunch for two with mimosas or a Golf Foursome. Have a wonderful month and I look forward to seeing everyone around the Club!
Regards,
John Gale, Director of Marketing & Membership j.gale@dbycc.com

Chef’s CORNER Introducing Chef’s Corner, a newsletter page dedicated in bringing you quick facts from the kitchen, recipes, our buying selections and much more! Pick up a copy and tune in to see what your kitchen team is up to. This month we are focusing on…
Our Fish Selection Nowadays many consumers believe to be considered excellent seafood it must be wild caught. Half of all seafood consumed in the US today is farmed. To meet the global demand for seafood aquaculture is growing fast. In open water fishing methods and aquaculture, there are good and bad practices that have a negative impact on the environment. The environmental impact of fish farming varies widely depending on the species, the methods used and where the farm is located. With the proper practices used it allows many fish farms to operate in a way that has a minimal impact on the environment. By being more aware of these methods, as chefs, we can play a decisive role in reducing some of these negative impacts. Here at Deering Bay, we are fortunate to be able to offer many locally sourced fish that are considered best choice for sustainability, as well when we are selecting other sources of seafood we choose our seafood from best choice sources. Such as our salmon from the Orkney Islands, hand line caught Mahi from the Atlantic, hand line striped bass from the Atlantic, Maine lobsters, white leg shrimp, wild caught tuna, and Atlantic cod. Rest assured we are always thriving to showcase the freshest most environmentally sound seafood available for all of our members here at the Club. -John Gray Executive Chef
