A M E S S A G E FROM THE PRESIDENT
I
t is the start of what I consider the perfect time of year in South Florida. Summer heat is over and we have already had some mornings in the 50’s. Beautiful days are ahead of us and you can enjoy the weather and all that Deering Bay has to offer. Please check the website and our social calendar to keep yourself apprised of upcoming events. We try and send out emails to let you know what events are upcoming. Sarah Kuhn, who chairs our house committee, has planned activities, lectures, tastings and parties for the next eight months which should appeal to members from 8 to 80. There is something for everyone.
David Baron President
There are two November forums open to the entire Club where we will try and bring you up to date on where we stand and where we are heading. There is an Open Forum followed by Board Candidate Speeches on November 8th, starting at 6PM. Your Board of Directors is committed to total transparency in how the Club is run and we know you have questions about the assessment, club finances and other issues, we are available to answer your questions. On November 30th, we will have our Annual Meeting & Elections, at 6PM. At that time we will spend more time talking about our vision for where Deering Bay is headed, what improvements we hope to make and Troon representatives will be present to give you their thoughts about the first five months of their management and how they hope to improve our Club. I want to thank three club members who are assisting us with presenting our hurricane damage claim to the insurance company. Carlos Casuso and Tom Thornton are both lawyers with insurance expertise who are making sure that we present our claim properly for all of our covered damages. Jon Hoffman is a general contractor who is helping us in dealing with the various subcontractors who are making the necessary repairs. Utilizing their services makes things easier for us--making sure that our property is properly repaired and we receive what we are entitled to under our insurance coverage. For golfers I am sure that you have seen the daily work as we redo our bunkers. We expect that before Thanksgiving we will have new bunkers that will be a marked improvement on what we had seen the last few seasons. The greens are in the best shape they have been since the course was redone 10 years ago. Kudos to Jimmy Germana and his staff for the work they have done since the hurricane. When we hired Jimmy two years ago he had a vision for Deering Bay and he is bringing it to fruition. Dave Ragan and his staff have put together a tournament schedule for the 2017-18 golf season and you should mark those dates in your calendars. Our Men’s Fall Member-Member, originally scheduled for November 16th-19th, is being pushed back to the spring, due to the ongoing bunker renovations. For those of you who have never participated in our memberguest tournaments, they are the best tournaments of the year and you should plan on playing—the Men’s Member-Guest is scheduled for Thursday, February 22nd – Saturday, February 24th, and the Women’s Member-Guest is scheduled for Wednesday, April 18th and Thursday, April 19th. This year we have a new tournament over Veteran’s Day weekend, from Friday, November 10th to Sunday, November 12th and you can play on any of the days or all. We will donate part of the tournament fee to two Veteran’s charities; Folds of Honor and Wounded Veterans Relief Fund. We will also recognize our Veterans, and especially honor the late Larry Hawkins, recipient of the Bronze Star and Purple Heart for his service during the Vietnam War. Larry was a long time member of Deering Bay and sacrificed more than I can say for his Country. Friday afternoon golf will include hors d’oeuvres following the golf and Saturday and Sunday will include lunch to follow golf. The two teams will be captained by Leo Chomiak and Chris Crystal, and sign-up sheets are in the Golf Pro Shop. We will match up golfers as best we can based on age, sex and handicap. I hope you have met our new Executive Chef, John Gray, who started working here about a month ago. John comes out of the kitchen to see how our members

like his cooking and wants to get to know your specific tastes so he can try and make sure you are happy with his selections. It is not easy pleasing 500 + diners, with a wide variety of likes and dislikes, but from the feedback I have received, John is doing a great job. Last but not least, our General Manager, Karen Harmon, is always available to answer your questions. Keeping all of you happy is quite frankly, almost impossible. But Karen does it as well as anyone can, and try and say thank you to her once in a while. As always, if you have any questions for me, please feel free to reach out, either by phone, in person at the Club (but not on the golf course) or at david@bhfloridalaw.com.
Regards,
David Baron President

A N O T E FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER/COO
A
s we wrap up the last few very trying months, excitement is building around the Club for the upcoming Holiday season towards the end of the year! Please pay close attention to our upcoming schedule of events and join us for as many holiday celebrations as you can this season. Our Thanksgiving dinner service (Thursday, November 23rd), Fall Festival (Sunday, November 26th) and one of your favorite events of the year, the Annual Holiday Party (Wednesday, December 6th) are only a small handful of events that I guarantee will continue to surpass your expectations and serve as a great gathering for you and your loved ones.
Karen Harmon General Manager/COO
Also, it is with great pleasure that I announce within the next week you will all be receiving your Club Calendar highlighting all tournaments and events from now until September 2018. Please make sure to check your emails for any pop-up events or visit the calendar page on the website for any updates. All images used in our calendar were images used on covers of previous newsletters featuring you, our members! So, make sure to participate in as many events as possible and you might be our next cover feature! I’m excited to announce that our Preview Membership category is back! This is the ultimate opportunity for your friends and family to enjoy the Club and everything it has to offer for a six month period. During that time they can participate in events, schedule appointments for sports clinics, dine, get to know the staff and make the ultimate decision to become part of our family! You may request more information from Daniella or John in the Front Office and remember to consider this as the best holiday gift of 2017. Moreover, during the holiday season we have the privilege of getting to meet extended family and friends. I cannot say enough how happy this makes me because there’s nothing I enjoy more than seeing the smiles of our members with their loved ones. However, it is more important than ever to be fully aware of the clubhouse and golf course dress code policy which will be enforced and is active at all times. We will be sending out a separate email communication highlighting the dress code later this week, but in the meantime you may find more information on the members side of the Club’s website, www.dbycc. com > Resources > House Rules. As we continue finalizing the final cost in repairs after Hurricane Irma, I am happy to have the membership pass by my office to view estimates for a better understanding of the damages occurred and answer any questions that you may have. I strongly encourage everyone to attend both the Open Forum (Wednesday, November 8th) – where you will also have the opportunity to hear the three potential Board candidates and the Annual Meeting (Thursday, November 30th) for more information in regards to the assessment. A special congratulations to Pedro Leon, Director of Tennis, who truly showcased his efforts in being a dominate force on the courts - Pedro attended the USTA Nationals last month in Alabama and won all of his matches within the Men’s 4.5 Team 40+. Congratulations, Pedro! Additionally, we have several menu changes coming your way to make the next few months even more tasteful: • Lunch (as of yesterday, Tuesday, October 31st) • Lounge (Thursday, November 2nd) • Brunch (Sunday, November 5th) • Dinner (Tuesday, November 7th) Here’s to a joyful and prosperous holiday season! I hope to see everyone around the Club.
All the best,
Karen Harmon General Manager/COO NOVEMBER 2017 • 6
