A M E S S A G E FROM THE PRESIDENT

A

s our days are finally starting to be cooler, your Club is humming with activity. Both the Men’s Golf Association and Women’s Golf Association had season-opening events with large numbers of participants. Everyone had a great time – we hope we get even more participation in future events. The condition of our course has never been better and our Superintendent – Jimmy Germana – promises even better conditions are to come. Year to date, the number of rounds played is sharply up over 2017, with a large part of the increase due to our visitors from Biltmore who have taken advantage of our reciprocal program while their course is being redone.

Larry Woerner President

Please put Wednesday, November 7, on your calendars. Beginning at 6PM, the Candidates for the two open positions on the 2019 Board of Directors will be speaking with membership providing their views on Deering Bay and what they would do to help in our mission to make our Club the absolute premier club in South Florida. Shortly after, ballots will be mailed out to all eligible voters who have until the Annual General Meeting (scheduled for Tuesday, December 4 at 6PM) to cast their ballots. We recently sent out the notice for the annual membership dues for 2019. Based upon the solid work done by Lee Andrea and his team, we are able to maintain our dues at the same level as in 2018. Projections show that this level of dues would be sufficient to maintain the Club’s operations in 2019 absent any loss of revenue due to the planned clubhouse renovations (scheduled to begin next summer). Kudos to Lee and his team for presenting this solid budget! Although the plan is to have the Club open even during the renovations, it is inevitable that there will be some shortfall in revenue. The Board and Management feel that it is nearly impossible to reasonably project what level of revenue shortfall will result since we are still in the planning stages and we have a number of variables that will be sorted out in the coming months (top of the list being the permitting process with the City of Coral Gables). Thus, as has been communicated in the Dues notice, we are holding 2019 Dues at the 2018 levels and plan to cover any potential shortfall with an Operating Assessment (or other source of funds) at year-end 2019. Management will strive to minimize any potential shortfall and thus the need for an assessment. Next year’s Board will keep membership fully informed on the Club financials as the year progresses. I look forward to seeing everyone out at our beautiful Club!

Regards, Larry Woerner President

A N O T E FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER/COO

H

ope you and yours are doing well and having an enjoyable fall season. Over the past two months, it has been a pleasure meeting and serving you and your guests. I look forward to upcoming forums providing more opportunities for interacting with you. One event of significance at this time of year features the introduction of members assuming new positions on our board of directors. An open forum, during which these members will be introduced, will be held on Nov. 7, at 6 p.m. I look forward to seeing you at this event. More information will be distributed via email blast in the coming weeks.

Lee Andrea General Manager/ COO

My staff and I look forward to the exciting months ahead as we transition to the holiday season, and we look forward to continuing our mission of serving you with exceptionalism within all aspects of our operations. We kindly request that in the coming weeks, you pay particular attention to email communication from us. With the Thanksgiving and holiday seasons approaching, we look forward to hosting our Thanksgiving buffet luncheon and annual holiday party. It is our sincerest hope that you will join us for these end-of-year events, and share in the joy and passion of the season. I am also delighted to share that our team is working on the 2019 event listing and club calendar. To ensure that you are aware of all events and projects at the Club, including updates on the 2019 clubhouse renovation project, we recommended that you occasionally visit the calendar page on the website, which will be available in the coming weeks. The images we will be using on the printed version of the calendar, which will be available in January, will reflect photos of members from previous events. This is such an innovative approach to featuring some of you in a fun and rewarding way, thanking you for your contributions and the value you bring to our Club. It is also my pleasure to advise that our Preview Membership category is doing very well, thank you to the brilliance of our marketing team – John and Daniella. As a friendly reminder, this membership category provides your family and friends with a unique six-month opportunity to preview our Club’s amenities and all we have to offer. Further, during this time, your family and friends will have the ability to dine with us, participate in events, and schedule appointments for sports clinics and more. We sincerely hope your memorable experiences with us will serve as the best source of referrals our team could ask for. We would be delighted and honored to welcome your family and friends as part of our vibrant club community. John and Daniella look forward to receiving your referrals, and are committed to welcoming them in a friendly and exceptional manner. To ensure we adhere to one of our Club’s basic policies, we kindly request that you and your guests maintain the Club’s dress code at all times. As a friendly reminder, we will be sending an email blast in the coming weeks with information on our dress code. In the interim, please feel free to review our dress code policy on the password-protected section of our website – www.dbycc.com > Resources > House Rules. As another friendly reminder, please be sure to take advantage of the Troon Prive and Troon Advantage benefits that our Club’s Troon affiliation provides for our members. For more information on both programs, please visit: https://www.troon.com/troon-prive-privilege/ and https://www.troon.com/troon-advantage/. In closing, it is my pleasure to have saved the best news for last – we are delighted to announce that the board of directors has voted to keep the 2019 dues at 2018 levels. This news translates into no dues increase for your 2019 membership year. One of our foremost priorities in 2019 will be to ensure that our fiscal goals align with a more innovative and rewarding business model. My team and I will work diligently to ensure that financial losses are kept to a minimum, and that our Club experiences at the worst, a break-even financial outcome at year’s end. We are also committed to adopting a much more practical and sound approach when pricing member and outside events. This is in an attempt to ensure that our members, in particular, obtain the best value for their investment when celebrating special occasions with family or friends. Further, we look forward to reversing the trend of declining memberships, finding innovative ways for recruiting new members to our Club, and doing all we

can to retain our existing membership base. By working collaboratively to rebuild our membership base, we will keep our Club financially strong. Profitability creates strong cash flow for our Club, and increases our member equity. It is always my pleasure to answer any questions or address any concerns you may have. My team and I will always strive to serve you with efficiency, accountability, resilience and integrity. Thank you for your continued patronage. It is always a pleasure serving you.

Cheers, Lee Andrea General Manager/COO

A M E S S A G E FROM THE HEAD GOLF PRO

I

t’s that time of year again, and a hint of a cooler breeze indicates a new season is upon us. It gives me great pleasure to welcome everyone to what promises to be a fun and eventful season. In the next few months, the golf calendar is a busy one. Please check out the 2018/2019 Calendar of Events, and make sure to mark all the activities in your calendar. We are extremely excited about the improved condition of the golf course and I anticipate increased participation in all our events. Please view the details of the golf events on the Deering Bay website’s golf page and sign up early to secure your place.

Dave Ragan Head Golf Pro

This season will include the following competitive and social golf events: Sunday couples, golf clinics, interclubs, demo days and a host of member tournament events. Our junior program continues to grow and will provide after school clinics each week throughout the year, special holiday camps and clinics and junior club and interclub tournaments. Women, join us on Thursdays for the WGA events, which balances fun and competitive events throughout the season. Women’s clinics are on Wednesdays and Saturdays. These clinics cover fundamental golf instruction and are structured to help golfers at all levels. While at the club, you will notice a few new features. GOLF CARTS: The new RXV Lithium E-Z-GO Golf Carts have arrived. The state of the art golf cart is more energy efficient, eco-friendly and lighter (which means healthier turf). The new carts also have an upgraded GPS to enhance your on-course experience. CADDIEMASTER: We have partnered with Caddiemaster, the premier provider of Caddie Management Services for the high-end private clubs in the United States and abroad. We will host a Satellite Caddie Program (a Full-Scale Caddie Program would not be economically feasible). The caddies reserved at our location are sourced and facilitated by the host sites, in this case from La Gorce Country Club and Crandon Park. Finally, with much anticipation DBYCC will be stepping into the new age of technology with the MemberFirst Tee Time System. I’ve worked with other online tee time systems in the past, and I found the tee sheet component of this website to be the best I have used. The ease of making or changing tee times is terrific. The ability to sign up and also see who else has signed up for the group on any particular day is a great feature. Once we go live, we will be happy to assist you. (MembersFirst also provides easy how-to instructions and videos to guide you through the booking process.) The thought of a new year brings great hopes of positive change for your golf game. I am very pleased to re-introduce to the membership teaching professional, John Pallot, who joined our staff in October ‘16. John is a Coral Gables native and University of Miami graduate. He has been named one of the top golf instructors in the state and (2-time) PGA Teacher of the Year in South Florida. The difficultly of golf is undisputed. As you know, each and every shot is counted. There is no second chance. Unlike other sports, we count our foul balls and faults; each and every shot has meaning. I encourage each and every golfer to pick an area of improvement for the coming season. John and our other outstanding teaching professionals will be happy to assist you with a plan to make your golf goals a reality. Change is difficult, slow and sometimes agonizing, but the results will be exciting. Remember … as the golf season is upon us, the amount of play increases. Please be aware of your “Pace of Play.” Let faster players play through. In the interest of all, players must play without delay. Let’s all make the 2018-19 golf season great and filled with wonderful golf and a lifetime of memories. Warm regards, Dave Ragan III Head Golf Professional

If you will be travelling during the holidays, do not forget to see if there is a Troon Privé course near your destination. Here is the link to find a club and make your own tee time: https://www.troon.com/ member-programs.

We have some exciting changes taking place this month to enhance your membership experience. One of these changes is added features on our Club’s application. Make sure you download our Deering Bay app to keep up with the latest events and news. Please visit the iTunes App Store and the Android Store. In addition, our marketing team put together a very robust and attractive social media campaign for the month of October. Our goal is to target specific individuals surrounding our community. You may have already seen it pop up on your social media feeds. I am very proud to say that we have been getting a great amount of interest and a great number of referrals due to this.
