A M E S S A G E FROM THE PRESIDENT & THE GENERAL MANAGER
May Newsletter – joint version – Steven Sonenreich and Peter Serena
Steven Sonenreich President
Welcome to the month of May. This is always a transitional month for Florida Clubs. We are still relatively busy for the first half of the month before the weather starts to heat up and some of our members head for cooler climes. The Club is still active with a Derby Watch Party, Couples Club Championship, Mother’s Day Brunch, DBKT events and culminating with many activities across Memorial Day Weekend. As a reminder, the Club will be open on Memorial Day, Monday, May 31st, and closed on Tuesday, June 1st. We received some good news regarding the renovation in April, when the City issued our revised permit for the main clubhouse portion. The permit for the 19th Hole structure is still pending, but we have passed some major hurdles with it, and have gotten back comments from the various departments on other items. We had a meeting planned with the City at the end of April and will report on the outcome of that at a later time. The Fitness and Group Exercise expansion is continuing as well as the fire service line relocations and inspections. The Low Voltage work will be commencing shortly and Origin will begin installing windows and hanging drywall in the beginning of May. As part of the renovation, we will be painting the entire exterior of the clubhouse. We don’t have the exact dates at this time, but it will require some interruption to our services as was expected. We will do our best to give as much notice and minimize any closure or rerouting that will be necessary as various areas of the clubhouse will be inaccessible intermittently. On the membership side, we had a terrific start to April with 15 new members! Interest in membership at our Club is at an all-time high and we are seeing many new members referring their friends to Deering Bay! The renovation amenities are proving to be very attractive to these prospects as well as our highly regarded golf course. We will be conducting our Annual Member Survey in the month of May. We are finalizing the questions and will be sending out notices to the membership on when and how to complete the survey. Your input is valuable to us to let us know what you enjoy about the Club and where we can improve. Another important aspect of membership is our Club Governance. Although our board elections are a few months away, it is not too soon to be thinking about how you can be involved. It is important for Clubs to have member involvement at the committee level, and on the Board of Directors, to work with management for strategic planning and to (continued on the next page)

have input for the betterment of your Club. Contributing your time and talents as a volunteer on one of our standing committees or board is welcomed and encouraged. The Club ended the first quarter on a positive note financially. Golf rounds, merchandise sales, activity in tennis are all outpacing budget. Food & Beverage is also seeing much more activity for dining at the Club as more members are getting vaccinated and venturing out more, and more often. Additional revenues generated by all areas of the operation have helped to keep us ahead of budget. On the COVID front, we saw the county relax some of the restriction as it pertained to golf and other amenities of our Club. Most importantly is the lifting of the single rider cart rule. We welcome this for a multitude of reasons. Primarily, the return to the congeniality of the game that is enjoyed when spending four hours with friends and family is probably tops on the list. Jimmy Germana welcomes it, as it reduces the wear and tear on the turf by 50%. Our Head Pro Dave Ragan sees the additional benefit of having less wear and tear on our fleet and the pressure to turn them around during peak times due to lack of availability of carts for our members. We want to once again stress the importance for all our golfers to begin to ride together again now that it is allowed. As we start to wind down the season and the school year and head into summer, we want to thank everyone for their patience and understanding during a most unusual of seasons. The impact of a renovation and a pandemic kept us from providing all the amenities and events we normally enjoy, but having them overlap is certainly more palatable than if they had happened back to back! There are a lot of great days ahead with the new venues expected to be ready by year end and a return to a full slate of seasonal activities. Sincerely,
Renovation Update We continue to gain ground on our renovations efforts as we update our facilities and enhance our amenities. The pictures below show our steady progress as we build towards our future and lay the foundation for the forseeable future. We will, of course, keep you up to date with the status of our renovations as it progresses and certain parts of the club house will be closed temporairly.

T
he Ambassador Program at Deering Bay is still looking for member volunteers. It is an effective way for current members to share their love of Deering Bay with newcomers. Since the beginning of the year we have had more than 20 families join the Club and we are expecting many more as we see a lot of families moving to Miami from Connecticut, Massachusetts and New York. What is the Club Ambassador Program? Club Ambassadors help new members make the transition from a new member to an involved member of the Club! A Club Ambassador will assist the new member with a smooth integration into the Deering Bay lifestyle. Who can be an Ambassador? All Club members can volunteer to be a Deering Bay Ambassador. As an Ambassador you will be: • Club Cheerleader – involved in the Club, who frequently attends Club events and activities. • Welcome Wagon – reaching out to new members with a welcome email or phone call. • Buddy – extending an invitation for a round of golf or initiation to a Club social event. • Friends – willing to be paired with new members for activities and social events. What are the duties of an Ambassador? • Based on interests, Ambassadors members would be assigned to each new Club member. • The Ambassador will call or email their assigned new member within the first week of joining. • The Ambassador will invite their assigned new member to join him/her to a Member Mixer, continental breakfast, lunch or dinner. • Ambassadors and their assigned new members will attend a new member reception to meet other new members, Ambassadors and Board Members. How long is an Ambassador assignment? Roughly a season. After two months, however, new members should be pretty well integrated into life at Deering Bay. Ambassadors should continue to send an email or call to check-in with their assigned new member for the remainder of the season. Who knows? You might have met a friend for life. We are always looking for new Ambassadors, so if you are interested in participating, please pass by the Front Office or contact me, Daniella Tosta at d.tosta@dbycc.com and I will forward you the Ambassador form.
Please congratulate...
PETER LAGONOWICZ who is the winner of the “Membership Ambassador Raffle” for the Month of April. Peter Lagonowicz, thank you for your referral. This Voucher is non-transferable and must be fulfilled within one year of receiving it. Warm regards, Daniella Tosta Membership Manager
MEMBERSHIP M E S S A G E
It is incredible how fast this season has flown by. It has been a tremendous success under the circumstances and renovation projects; many thanks go out to all the members and employees for all the support you have shown.
Daniella Tosta Membership Manager
For the months of February through April 2021, the Club had the busiest months for membership sales in recent history. Why are new membership sales soaring? There are many reasons, but the pandemic has made many families and young professionals move to Miami looking for a respectful and caring community to live in. Safe indoor and outdoor amenities are just one of the many necessities to enjoy during these extraordinary times. With many areas of the country facing restrictions, combined with cold weather, Florida winters never looked better. The Club’s response to the pandemic also made a great impression on prospective members for the past year and added confidence in our operations. Our numbers in sales are higher than previous years, and a testament to the first–class experience our members enjoy. The team has been working hard to welcome these families to our wonderful Club. If you see a new face around the Club, be sure to introduce yourself, as this is likely a new member. I would like to extend my sincere appreciation for your continued support through the summer and wish everyone safe and healthy travels. Daniella Tosta Membership Manager
ATTENTION ALL TRAVELERS We kindly request those members leaving for the summer to notify Kathy in Member Billing; memberbilling@dbycc.com with your summer address. You can also make the changes yourself using the Deering Bay APP or through the Member Portal on the website. That will assist the Club with ensuring all our mailings reach you in a timely Manner.

A N O T E FROM GOLF
Golf- May
Dave Ragan III Head Golf Professional
Wow! Can you believe it? It’s May already with great weather, and your DBYCC calendar is full as we head toward the end of another tournament season at Deering Bay Yacht & Country Club. I’m thrilled to report record rounds and participation in all the golf events throughout the 2020-21 season. Our active spring season was showcased by our recent men’s and women’s member- member tournaments, club championships, couples events and an energetic WGA membership. The golf course is gorgeous; with the additional landscaping in some of our retention areas and some of our off course areas the course is second to none in natural beauty and extremely challenging to play. Our Paspalum grass fairways are as plush as ever and the greens are rolling true and fast. The 2020-21 Golf Calendar is shaping up to be a busy one that will be including more social, couples and youth activities, so please check out the calendar and make sure you view the details of the golf events on the DBYCC website. Sign up early to secure your place in all our activities, as we anticipate many events will fill up fast! I personally would like to thank the membership for its participation in our events and golf programs during this unpresented, and sometimes challenging, 2020-21 golf season. On behalf of the entire golf staff here at Deering Bay I sincerely wish you and your family a happy, healthy and safe summer!

WOMEN’S CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP ‘21 This year the Women’s Championship field was filled with experience. Marie Dresnick, 13-time Champion was back, along with former winners ‘17 Geraldine Blakely and ’13 Kay Waltman. Sunny skies a constant breeze with speedy greens made round one scoring challenging. When the final putt was holed, Dresnick held a slim 4-stroke lead over Blakely with Willie Siert in the chase. Beginning the final round participants began the day with a beautiful South Florida perfect scoring conditions. In the end, Dresnick holed several crucial putts during the 36-hole event. Her steady ball striking and timely holed putts helped her post a score of +7 (78=159) over the last 18-holes which proved to be too much for the field. Geraldine Blakely claimed the runner-up position and Ligia Crystal placed third. Congratulations to the 2021 Women’s Club Champion, Maria Dresnick (pictured above)! In the Net Division, the field participated from the red tee markers, medal play. Veteran’s such as Judy Maynes and Kay Waltman participated along with newcomer Eileen Alvo. After round 1, Kay Waltman posted a -1 (70) played a near flawless round and held a one stroke lead over Willie Siert +4 (71). In the final round, the margin was razor thin as Waltman +1 (143) edged Siert +4 (146) by a three strokes to claim the title. Judy Maynes finished third in the highly contested competition. Congratulations to Kay Waltman for winning the 2019 Women’s Club Championship Net Flight .
2021 Women’s Club Championship Contestants: From Left to right we have: Wilie Siert, Runner Up in the Net Division; Kay Waltman, Winner in the Net Division; Maria Dresnick, Women’s Club Championshipo winner; and Geraldine Blakely, Women’s Club Championship Runner up. Congratulations to all these women and to all the women that competed.
MEN’S CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP ‘21 Throughout the year, we have many championships that are played with handicaps. To find the best a club has to offer, there is only one way to play, straight up! To achieve this elite status a member must overcome many obstacles. Deering Bay is known as one of the most demanding golf courses in the area and requires marksman like precision to navigate the course tee to green. With a challenging course set-up; fast greens and breezy conditions the championship showdown was set. For the first time in club history, no former champions were competing in the Championship Flight. A strong field of newcomers including; former University of Pittsburg golfer, Joshua Moskowitz, John Marshall (2020 Deering Bay Jr. Champion), Aaron Levitats, and Ryan Hegarty, among other were competing for the title of (2021 Men’s Club Championship Club Champion. The field of 9 players compet- winner Joshua Moskowitz) ed in medal play format, from the black tees for 36-holes. After round one a young gun and new face to the championship, John Marshall fired a +4 (75) and opened up a 2-stroke lead over former Pitt Panther Joshua Moskowitz +6 (77). Hot on their heels was Jose Bengoechea, Aaron Levitats, Nolan Wilson and Ryan Hegarty. In the final round under bright blue skies, the pressure of the winning the (2021 Men’s Club Championship crown mounted. After the front nine, Bengoechea Runner up, John Marsall) -2 (34) and Moskowitz +2 (38) began to make a move and drew close overtaking Marshall +3 (39). Yes, these gentlemen are good! As the leaders headed to #18, Marshall and Moskowitz were tied. The tension began to build as Moskowitz needed two-putts from 40 feet to win. He didn’t disappoint, Moskowitz calmly rolled in the three-foot putt to secure the two-putt and the victory. In the end, the steady play of Joshua Moskowitz +4 (75=152) held off John Marshall +7 (78=153) and the field to claim the 2021 Men’s Club Champion crown. In the Championship “A” Flight, Domingo Moreira fired a final round +5 (76=159) to win low gross and David Adler’s +8 (79=150) solid play over the two days earned him the honor of low net.
MEN’S SENIOR CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP ‘21 The Senior Club Championship determines the champion golfer of the year for ages 55 and over. The Championship Division is played strictly from the blue tee markers while the Net Division is played from the blue/white tee markers. This prestigious event was made up of many of Deering Bay’s most seasoned tournament golfers. Including, defending Champion Larry Woerner who was ready for his attempt at a repeat. In the first round, a mild breeze and true greens made scoring ideal. After day one scores were tallied, co-leaders Craig Moskowitz and Tom Thornton both posted a +7 (78) and held a slim two stroke lead over David Baron. Steve Torcise, Jeff Wechsler, Jose Cabrera and Eric Woolworth all were in reaching distance and had their eyes on the prize. In final round with three holes left to play the tournament was up for grabs. Craig Moskowitz proved to play well under pressure. He calmly opened up with a +2 (37) on the front 9 to open up a 5-stroke lead on Baron +4 (40). The game was on for the runner-up position, and Tom Thornton’s posted solid back 9 +4 (40) was enough to place second. David Baron’s bid fell a few strokes short and finished in third place. Congratulations to Craig Moskowitz the 2021 Men’s Senior Club Champion. In the Championship Net Division, just like a thoroughbred racehorse running away from the competition, Jeff Fenton brought his “A” game and won by six strokes. Marc Powers secured the runner-up position by edging Joe Pallot who placed t-third. Congratulations to Jeff Fenton the 2021 Championship Net Division winner.
MEN’S SUPER SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIP ‘21 The Super Senior Championship was designated for men ages (65-74) playing from the white tee markers over 18 holes. The tournament was highly competitive with 17 players in the field. In the end, the tournament field met the round of the year from Rudy Stern. Stern fired +4 (75) edging runner-up David Rosenbaum’s +9 (80) and Frank Borja who carded a +10 (81) to claim solo 3rd. Congratulations Rudy Stern 2021 Men’s Super-Senior Champion. In the Net division, Joe Zagorski fired a -2 (69) to win the honors. Leo Mendoza placed second with an E (71) and Steve Plotkin finished third with +1 (73).
MEN’S SUPER-SUPER SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIP ‘21 This championship is aimed to attract the most experienced golfers. Gentlemen ages (75 & older) were eligible to play in this tournament. The format was 18 holes of medal play, played from the green tee markers. The lowest score will determine the champion. Former champions Howard Greenberg and Dick Griesemer were back to hoist another trophy. After regulation play, Greenberg and Griesemer were the two players who emerged from the pack! Greenberg fired and outstanding score of +11 (82) defeat Griesemer who carded a +18 (89) to stake claim to the runner-up position. Well done Howard Greenberg the 2021 Super-Super Senior Club Champion. On the Net side, in first place was Stephen Kulvin who posted a +6 (77) edging second place finisher Fred Buchsbaum.

A M E S S A G E FROM TENNIS
Pedro Leon Tennis Director
Summer is about to begin and here at Deering your Tennis Department is encouraging all members to get out and play tennis. Tennis is a great option for exercise and it can be done with little risk and is an ideal sport for families and individuals to play safely during this time. When it comes to our programs, all clinics, lessons and matches continued with great success as scheduled. We want to congratulate our South Florida Doubles Alpha Beta team who won the championship this season and are moving on to a higher and more competitive level. Regarding our special events last month, on Thursday the 18th we had our Pretzels & Beers Tennis Night Out with amazing participation; it was a night full of fun and good level of tennis. This month will not be different, on May 6th we are offering a Mexican Tennis Night Out and on the 15th a Ladies Member/ Member or Guest Round Robin; both events are expected to be well attended. As we have been writing about tactics for playing against counterpunchers; here you have one more:
Attack Down The Middle
It is difficult to attack the corners because of their quickness and great passing shots; we suggest you approach up the middle. This will limit your opponent’s ability to hit on the run as well as hit sharp angled passing shots and lobs. On behalf of your friends from the tennis shop, have a wonderful month. Sincerely we look forward to seeing you. Thank you all!!!!
