A M E S S A G E FROM THE PRESIDENT

H

aving just completed the first quarter of the year, it is a good time to reflect on how we are trending for the balance of 2019. On an overall basis, I would say that our country club is doing well as we position ourselves to grow and do even better in the future.

Steven Sonenreich President

We selected a construction firm at the beginning of March, and we should finalize our Phase 1 renovation plan at a meeting with our professional team during the first week of April. We will have a Town Hall meeting at the end of April to give a detailed update of our plans. If you refer to our renovation time line below, you will see that we are meeting our schedule’s goals. We did encounter significant deferred maintenance and capital items during our renovation diligence, which will be addressed appropriately during Phase 1. The role of every board is to retain management to operate the organization, and to approve a budget and set policy. In establishing policy, a board needs to establish a culture and vision. While our board focuses on these long overdue renovations, as well as the operating and capital budget, it is also spending time on culture and vision. I intend to talk about culture, vision and the renovation at the Town Hall Meeting, and will get your input as well. I have served on the board for only 15 months to date, and it has been an interesting experience. Perhaps the most interesting item was to find that we did not fund depreciation in our budget. Culturally speaking, that is kicking the proverbial can down the road. By definition, we as members are a group of people who are successful and enjoy good things like country club membership. In that regard, I look forward to discussing with you how we can continue to enhance our club beyond the renovation so that our membership grows, and with it, our future. We are all interested in having a club that is successful and enjoyable now, but also well-positioned for the future. We all have a responsibility as members, even if you are not on the board, to use our club and assist with the recruitment of new members. As successful people, we have friends who are our target audience for new members. I ask that we all ask ourselves - when was the last time I recommended someone for membership?

The following reflects anticipated timelines for the project: • • • • • • •

January through February 2019 – Hiring of all consultants and estimate cost of phases January through April 2019 – Design development, planning and review April 2019 – Cost estimate based on all architectural, interiors, and site design End of May 2019 – Go in for permits of drawings May through end of August 2019 – Reviews by municipalities and receive permits June and July 2019 – Finalize bids and costs for project September 2019 – If all goes well, construction begins!

Thank you for your support, and I look forward to seeing you soon.

Sincerely, Steven Sonenreich President

A N O T E FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER/COO

H

ope you and yours are doing well and had a productive and enjoyable month of March. Spring is here, and we are poised and ready to transition to even more fantastic weather and temperatures. This means you have a more compelling reason to join us at the club, play additional rounds of golf, or play on one of our tennis courts. In anticipation of this increase in activity, we look forward to being of service to you and your guests whenever the need arises.

Lee Andrea General Manager/ COO

The month of March was quite busy on the activities front, including our highly successful Women’s Member/Guest tennis tournament, and the Men’s Spring Member/Member golf tournament. Thank you for your support of these events. It is equally my pleasure to remind you of our April events, including, but not limited to - tournaments; themed dinner nights; Member Mixer and Casino Royale Night. Also, please remember to make your reservations for our Easter Brunch on Sunday, April 21. We look forward to making April another month of successful and memorable events and activities. For a complete listing of our April activities, please view the event calendar on our website. I would be remiss without expressing heartfelt thanks to my team – golf operations with Dave at the helm, and with his supporting cast of Dominic and Nicole; maintenance operations with Jimmy at the helm; the food & beverage operations with Max at the helm, and an oversight team of Jorge, Jessica and Chef Eduardo, and a supporting cast of Joaquin and the entire kitchen staff. Jenny, Carmen, John, Daniella, Kathy, Ana, Erik, Renny and Pedro are always instrumental in ensuring the administrative aspects of our operations are executed with efficiency, and we extend our gratitude to them for their continued diligence and support. Everyone always works collaboratively to ensure that all events are exciting and memorable for our members and their guests. Finally, as a friendly reminder, it is always our pleasure to welcome new members, and you serve as excellent referral resources. In light of this, we kindly request your assistance in referring potential members to the Club by sharing your positive experiences. It is our foremost priority to ensure that we always create and ensure memorable experiences for our patrons, and provide unparalleled customer service levels to our members. Our Membership Director John Gale is always delighted to follow up with your referrals, with the hope of successfully recruiting them as members. Please never hesitate to reach out to me if I can be of assistance. It is always a pleasure serving you.

Cheers, Lee Andrea General Manager/COO

e are kicking off April with the Miami Heat Golf Classic at Deering Bay. This will be the second year that the Miami Heat is having their tournament at our club. They will be promoting the club and the golf course to their sponsors, fan base, and the NBA. We are thrilled to host their golf tournament on April 1st.

John Gale Director of Mktg. & Membership

Following the tournament, we have an interactive workshop that is scheduled to take place on Tuesday, April 9th. Members will have an opportunity to learn all of the functionalities of the club’s website and mobile application. We will have a representative from Members First provide a live tutorial in three segmented time slots throughout the day. Please contact the Hostess for more information and to reserve your seat. We have been working with Jose Buezas from Steady Motion to do drone footage of the golf course and hole-by-hole flyovers. Once the project has been completed our members and guests will be able to view the flyover footage on our website. In addition to the website, a video of each hole will be displayed within the GPS system of each Deering Bay golf cart! If you are not following the club’s Instagram or Facebook channels please do so! Daniella Tosta has been posting all of the fun events going on at Deering Bay via the club’s social media channels. Please send her any club related photos and videos that you would like to share. A special congratulations goes to…

WILLIAM TUNKEY who is the winner of the Membership Ambassador Raffle for the Month of April. Mr. Tunkey, thank you for your referral. Please see Daniella or myself in the Membership Office to receive your prize of a Brunch for two with mimosas or a Golf Foursome.

A M E S S A G E FROM GOLF

W Dave Ragan III Head Golf Professional

ell Spring is here, which means it is time for change. Many things will go through change this time of year, trees and flowers start blooming, grass starts growing, as we know this is the best time of year to enjoy all the outside activities Deering Bay and South Florida has to offer. With Daylight Saving Time in place, many of you will be able to get out after work for a quick nine holes or get to the range to hit a few balls. This is a great opportunity to spend time with your family or get away by yourself and enjoy the great weather. Spring is also a time many people make changes to their equipment. The hottest in equipment this season includes Callaway’s Epic Flash Drivers, Fairway Medals, Big Bertha’s and Odyssey Putters. Taylor-Made’s M5 & M6 Drivers, Fairway Medals & Hybrids and Kalea’s for the ladies have been extremely popular. Your clothing, headwear and sunscreen are also things that will change this time of year. A great habit to keep in mind through the summer months is to make sure you apply the appropriate sunscreen and wear UV protective clothing and headwear. Spring is also a time to make the proper changes to your swing with our award winning golf instructor John Pallot or one of our other outstanding teaching professionals. Come sharpen your medal play competitive skills. Beginning on Saturday May 4, 2019 we will begin a “Monthly Medal” Play Tournament. The tournament will be held on a selected Saturday each month. The tournament will consist of both Gross and Net Divisions. Participants will make their own pairings during scheduled events and must tee off prior to 1:00 PM. Participants will be required to play the set of tees the player’s handicap is established and meets the tournament tee requirements. The “Monthly Medal” will count as an official tournament round and the score will be posted as a tournament round. The entry fee is $20.00 per player. $10.00 will be dedicated to daily prizes in golf shop credit and $10.00 will be dedicated to for a season ending shoot-out in April of 2020. Daily prizes will be based on participation, 25% of the field will be paid in golf shop credit. All monthly winners will be eligible for the season ending shoot-out. Amazing! The scotch was flowing as two holes-in-ones were carded by Alan Brooks within a two-month time span. The great shots were recorded on hole #5 and then again on #8 during the MGA Event in February. Congratulations Mr. Brooks! On the Horizon: April is Championship month! All the Deering Bay Club Championships are held in the month of April, so sharpen your golf game and sign-up at the golf shop today! SAVE THE DATE: With Summer just around the corner our Jr. Golf Camp dates are: June 11-14, June 25-28, July 23-26, and July 30-August 2. Children ages 5 to 15 are eligible for the camp. Space is limited. The camp will be filled on a first come, first serve basis. Contact the Golf Shop for sign-up or more details. Friendly Reminders: Bunker Care - Please enter and exit bunkers from the lowest point convenient to your golf ball. Smooth the area where your club made contact with the sand, and footprints. When exiting please lay rake head in bunker and handle on bunker edge. Dress Code-On the Golf Course & Practice Facility proper dress is required. No denim, No Jeans, No Bathing Suits or Fitness style shorts, No Tee Shirts, No Exercise Clothing. Women’s sleeveless shirts must have a collar. Men’s shirts must be tucked in at all times. A N O T E FROM TENNIS

I

n keeping with the year’s festivities, March was a very eventful month. All of our clinics and regular events were successful and will continue as scheduled on the calendar that is available in the pro-shop and on our website. Tournaments, significant special events, and great achievements all describe our tennis family’s year-to-date accomplishments.

Pedro Leon Tennis Director

Last month the USTA Ladies and SFWDL teams represented our DBYCC very well in a number of competitive matches. The season is not over yet and our Senior 3.5 USTA Team is already leading the way with the championship trophy. In addition, we also held the Women’s Member Guest on March 14 with the best participation ever. In all, we had 17 teams competing vigorously for more than three hours. The champions were Maria McDonald & Jane Moore (6.5 division) and Kim Kaskel & Diane Maddox (7.5 division). We also hosted the Pretzels & Beers Round Robin on March the 21 where more than 20 players enjoyed a great night of fun and tennis. We would like to thank all the members for their continued support and participation in all of our events, especially to the Women’s Tennis Association and our Tennis Committee for dedicating their time in organizing every single event and for making the tennis family happier every day. One of our priorities is to keep the courts in the best conditions to make our members proud, that is why we just finished resurfacing the courts, placed brand new net posts, nets and irrigation system. Last but not least, we would like to remind everyone to wear the proper attire and tennis shoes while playing tennis. As well, reservations should be made no earlier than two days in advance before 5:00 p.m. After 5 p.m. all walk-ins are welcomed. Please keep a look out for flyers with dates and times of future events or contact the tennis pro-shop for further details or questions. We would like to wish everyone a happy April and tennis season. We look forward to seeing new and familiar faces.

Sincerely, Pedro Leon Director of Tennis

Max’s Selections of the Month

Silver Oak, Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley, CA, 2014 This wine is one of my personal favorite wines produced in the world-renowned Napa Valley region, and the 2014 vintage more so, as it was the year that I toured the Silver Oak winery & vineyard. The aging of this wine was 24 months in American oak barrels and an additional 20 months in the bottle before arriving to Deering Bay on March 1st, 2019. This wine is elegant, balanced and ready to be enjoyed with notes of cassis, black cherry and vanilla with soft tannins moving onto a silky finish. G: $37.50 | B: $150
