A M E S S A G E FROM THE PRESIDENT

W

e trust that you and yours are enjoying the summer season. The renovation project is still on target for a start this fall with the final phasing of the construction still a work in process. The financing and permitting process are near completion and on schedule. The board has been extraordinary in their engagement throughout the summer to keep this project on track and on budget. Our intention is to minimize to the extent reasonably possible the disruption to the members and our budget.

Steven Sonenreich As you are aware we are recruiting a new executive chef and expect that search to be completed in the coming weeks. Fortunately, there has been an excellent talent President pool for this most important position.

The membership survey is in the process of being summarized for the board so that we can prioritize Management’s efforts in the areas that can be strengthened. I will report back to you on those efforts in the September newsletter.

Best regards, Steven Sonenreich President

A N O T E FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER/COO

H

ope you, your families, and friends are all having a safe, adventurous, and enjoyable summer. It has truly been a pleasure seeing some of you at the Club so far this summer for golf, dining, and more. My staff and I look forward to continuing to serve you as the summer advances.

Lee Andrea General Manager/ COO

As you are aware, the Club and golf course were closed from Monday, July 8, through Thursday, July 18, for our annual summer refresh project. We are delighted to be back and certainly missed serving you in a full capacity during this time. However, throughout these dates, we engaged in much-needed improvements around the Club, conducted staff training, and worked on new menu items for your dining pleasure. At this time last year, I introduced myself as your new general manager. I can’t believe that a year has gone by so quickly. While it has been a year of challenges, we have faced them all together, conquered them together, and made progress together. While we still have some work to do, the unconditional support from Troon, the club’s Board of Directors, our members and club staff has contributed to the progress we have made at our Club over the past year. We are well on our way with realizing the goals I shared with you when I first came on board last year, including my commitment to advancing member retention and satisfaction; growing the membership community; improving customer service levels; ensuring employee development; and creating an atmosphere at the Club that is conducive to growth and memorable experiences for our members, their guests, and our employees. The support and resources that Troon has provided and continues to provide is instrumental in advancing our efforts to help our Club retain its place as a premier country club. My team and I will continue to provide an environment that supports professionalism, productivity, efficiency, forward-thinking, accountability, and having not only a desire to succeed, but a passion for success. Further, the support from our Club’s Board of Directors has been unwavering, and I am truly grateful to Steven, Richard, Robert, Sarah, John, Gaston, Leo, Jimmie, Richard, and Larry for all they have done and continue to do in support of our collective vision and mission for our vibrant Club. Collaborating with all of them is an integral part of achieving success at our Club, and I look forward to continuing on this trajectory. Finally, I thank all our members and club staff for their contributions toward seeing our collective vision to fruition, and for their assistance with executing our comprehensive and viable business operations model. Thank you for the great memories and sense of appreciation that have characterized my tenure here thus far. You all have been instrumental in making my experience at our Club a rewarding one that has truly been one of the highlights of my long-standing career in the hospitality industry. It is always a pleasure serving you, and l look forward to serving you again soon.

Cheers, Lee Andrea General Manager/COO

This is another way for you to track upcoming events at the club and share your experiences from the club with your closest friends online. We are also utilizing social media to promote our beautiful club and golf course. We have received positive feedback from many social media users that have never been to Deering Bay or even knew of its wonderful amenities. We will keep you posted with our ever-growing social media presence and profile within our surrounding community. Keep an eye out for our upcoming IG contest to enter and win a Sunday brunch for 4!

A N O T E FROM GOLF

O Dave Ragan III Head Golf Professional

ne way we can tell, as golf professionals, that we are heading into the middle of summer is by looking at our tee sheet. As many of our members head north for the summer, this creates a lot of openings on the tee sheet. In a give and take world, this is disappointing to us because our beautiful course and facility we have isn’t filled daily with players and guests; on the other hand this creates a great golfing environment for those of you that are here for the summer. One thing you might not know about summer golf at Deering Bay, is that due to the minimal rounds that are played each day, your average pace of play is quicker. This allows for quick morning or afternoon rounds if you only have a limited amount of time to play, and it also makes it easier for you to bring guests or business associates out to the club because the time commitment is much smaller. As I’ve heard many times this summer, players feel like “we are the only people on the course,” due to the fact you are not running into a lot of groups while you’re out playing. Another fact about summers here at Deering Bay, is that even though the temperature and humidity is high, we normally have a nice breeze that helps keep conditions playable. While you still need to drink plenty of water, find shade on the course where you can to stand, wear protective headwear and clothing, and apply appropriate amounts of sunscreen, the common misconception about the summer being too hot to enjoy we believe is false. As we all have played all over the country, and the world, we have played in many places where the temperature and/or humidity is worse than it is here. Understandably, our weather here just lasts longer, but let’s be honest, that’s why we are choosing to live in South Florida correct? Summer time at Deering Bay also gives you the opportunity to work on your game after work. As many people take advantage of the sun staying up longer in the evenings, our range stays open longer at night for your convenience, and you can always go out for a quick nine holes at one of the best times to play. Yes, the pro shop closes at 6:00 pm, but that doesn’t mean you can’t play. Simply by checking in with our staff downstairs most people are able to get nine holes in even when teeing off after six. This is also a great time for beginning golfers to get out on the course, without having the stress of other golfers being around, as well as a great time to get your children or grandchildren into the game. By bringing them out in the evening for a few holes, or just to hit balls on the range, you will be introducing them to a game that they will be able to play for a lifetime. While many people see the summer time as a time to hang up the clubs, we see this as a season of opportunity for you. Use this time to work on your game, and introduce others to the game or the club. Quicker rounds, longer days, a nice breeze, and the opportunity to play or practice with your golf professional staff are all reasons to be sure you’re staying active on the golf course this summer. We look forward to seeing you soon.

Tip Of The Month Rough Tactics HITTING irons shots from the rough or from thick grass in the fairway requires a small, yet significant, change in tactics. I have found that the key to good iron play out of the rough comes from opening the clubface slightly when addressing the ball. The reason for this is that the clubhead will turn in slightly as it cuts through the heavy grass on the downswing. By the time impact has been made, the clubhead will have turned back to a normal square face and the shot will sail out of the rough on a straight path. If you address the ball with a square club face, the grass will twist the clubhead on the downswing and the face will close at impact, causing a pulled shot. When addressing the ball, be sure not to sole the club. Let the sole of the club rest about an inch behind the ball, barely touching the top of the grass. By not soling it, you eliminate the possibility of catching heavy grass as the clubhead is taken back. Take a full swing when playing this shot rather than a punch shot. And be careful in your selection of a club. This shot will usually “fly” with less spin and fun, more than the ordinary shot when it hits the ground. Therefore, if there’s no wind, take one club less than you’d normally take to cover the distance. If the wind is against you, take the same club you’d use under normal conditions. If the wind is with you, it might be best to take two clubs less than you’d normally use. – Dave Ragan III

Max’s Selections of the Month

La Crema, Pinot Noir, Russian River Valley, CA, 2015 One of my favorite things about La Crema is their ability to produce high quality wines with consistency, vintage after vintage. Once again when selecting the wine from our Deering Bay Wine Cellar a very important consideration was the current temperature in South Florida. It needed to be red and complex, but not heavy. I can’t believe it has been 5 years since my visit to the Russian River Valley. It feels like just yesterday that I was enjoying a glass of pinot noir and overlooking the Russian River. Enjoy this month’s selection, it displays notes of black cheery, raspberry and blackberry with round tannins and structured acidity. G: $15 | B: $60
