A M E S S A G E FROM THE PRESIDENT

F

or those of you who missed the Annual Meeting on November 30th, we tried to let the 50 or so members who attended know what the Board has worked on over the last months and what we hope will happen in 2018.

Among the issues talked about and the questions which members asked:

David Baron President

1. Community membership was asked about and the status of that is the MPOA is going to host open forums with residents to discuss giving all nonmember residents the right to use the Club facilities similar to the rights our social members currently enjoy. The Club and the MPOA have prepared an agreement granting this right of use to residents, but it is up to the MPOA to decide whether this is in the community’s best interest. Ferne Kalstone, the MPOA President, has told us that the MPOA will host a series of open forums to get opinions from residents and it will eventually be up to the MPOA Executive Board to vote on the issue. It would benefit the Club by providing additional revenue on an annual basis, and a stronger club benefits all of the residents and increases home values. 2. The Board plans on addressing the priorities that you have told us need improvement—the fitness facilities, the pool and outside dining. Hopefully plans will be presented to the membership, for a membership vote in 2018, to make capital improvements in those areas. 3. There is excitement among golf members over the improvement on the golf course and we are all looking forward to the completion of the bunker restoration, which should be finished by December 15th. The course has improved dramatically in the last two years and with the bunker work completed, this should be a great golf season ahead. 4. Troon, through its regional VP, Ricardo Catania, presented an update on what they have done since being hired to manage the Club in July. With their assistance we have hired a new chef and membership director. We answered questions and explained that contrary to rumors being spread by some members, Troon has not reduced front of the house staff or cut the pay of any of our employees. Troon has made recommendations, some of which we have agreed with and implemented, but those decisions have been made in collaboration with our Board and General Manager, Karen Harmon. We discussed the issues of service in the dining room and some of you commented on what you thought was improved service following the training done by Troon with our wait staff. We explained that turnover is unfortunately endemic with our wait staff and we constantly are trying to improve in that area. 5. Dining room and reservations—it is crucial for good service in the dining room at dinner that you make reservations. When we have reservations for 60 members and 130 show up, there are going to be problems in getting everyone their food in a timely manner. The way to solve this problem is for members to make reservations so we can properly staff the dining room. Max Miranda, our Director of Food & Beverage, is in the process of hiring a new dining room manager to help oversee this area. When you order food that is not on the menu, our staff and chef will always try and accommodate your requests—but understand that ordering off the menu can result in additional time to get your meal prepared. When you come into the dining area, please go to the host or hostess who is seating people, and have them bring you to a table. Someone who seats him/ herself may not get a waiter assigned to his/her table in a timely manner as one who is seated by a host(ess). As this is my last newsletter since my term on the Board ends on December 14th, I want to thank all of you who have taken the time to email or call me over the last couple of years. Your comments, criticisms and complaints have helped us try and improve things at the Club. We have not solved all of the problems but we certainly have tried. For those members who have helped out by serving on

club committees, thanks for your assistance. Special thanks to Paul Lester. Our membership should know that Paul, as a longtime member of the Legal & Bylaw Committee, has provided great legal help to the Club without compensation, and saved the Club a substantial sum in legal fees by generously donating his time. I want you, the members, to thank outgoing board members Wini Kinney and Ferne Kalstone as they conclude their terms on the Board, and for the three new Board members coming on to replace us, I wish you and all of the remaining Board members good luck going forward to make Deering Bay a great place to enjoy. It has been a pleasure to work with Karen Harmon, our General Manager, who everyday shows up to try and improve the member experience. I look forward to playing more golf and if you have any complaints, forward them to the person who the Board will name President on December 14th. Best wishes for the Holidays.

Regards,

David Baron President

A N O T E FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER/COO

A Karen Harmon General Manager/COO

s the holidays come upon us and decorations continue to become prevalent around the Club, life continues under the sun for all of us here in South Florida. This month, our calendar is filled to capacity with some of your favorite annual events! We will hold our Annual Holiday Party on Wednesday, December 6th, and we kindly ask that you bring a new unwrapped toy(s) which will be given to the Coral Gables Fire and Police Departments for distribution to those in need. Also, the Chanukah Candle Lighting & Dinner will be held on Tuesday, December 12th with the menorah lighting being hosted by fellow DBYCC member Dr. Philip Grossman. Lastly, on Sunday, December 17th we will host our annual Santa Brunch in which you and yours will have the opportunity to take photos with Santa, with a special guest appearance this year from Disney’s Moana! Don’t forget to ring in the New Year right here ON THE BAY as we host our annual New Year’s Eve Party on Sunday, December 31st. Please note that we’ll only be open for lunch and golf on New Year’s Day. It is incredible to believe that 2017 has flown by so quickly. We only have a few more weeks left until we flip the calendar to usher in a new year. We surpassed a vigorous hurricane and have gone through many changes, but we continue to stay strong as one and keep moving forward. That being said, I’d like to take this time and send out a big THANK YOU for those who contributed to our annual Employee Holiday Fund. Our staff is our backbone and without them nothing is possible, so I’d just like to thank those again who recognize their tireless efforts. As with past years, the Golf & Green Committee has designated a few “black out” periods for the annual guest passes. During this timeframe you may bring guests out to play, but your annual passes may not be used. The blackout dates are as follows: Sunday, December 24th-Monday, January 1st Other than these dates your annual guest passes may be used. We look forward to seeing you all out on the golf course in the next few weeks. Please note that the bunkers are scheduled to be completed by mid-December. We have a huge selection of gifts that keep on giving! On the next page you’ll find our top selections of gifts from our holiday gift guide. However, the ultimate gift you can give a loved one this year is the gift of The Ultimate Club Experience. That’s right; I’m talking about our Preview Membership that allows your friend or family member to enjoy the Club for six full months! What better way to bring in the New Year than having a friend or family member enjoy the same amenities with you! I’m excited to announce, as posted on last month’s newsletter, we have a new website and mobile application coming in early 2018. With the redesign you will now be able to book event reservations online along with your tee times. These are only a few of the new features to look forward to. Thank you to our Communications Manager, Bryan Rodriguez, for taking ownership on this project and making sure that all of your technological needs are met. Here’s to another joyful and fulfilling month with you and your loved ones. I hope to see everyone around the Club! And lastly on behalf of DBYCC we would like to wish you and your families health and happiness during the winter festivities and into the new year.

All the best,

Karen Harmon General Manager/COO

ith the Holiday Season upon us first let me wish you all a wonderful and safe holiday season. As usual the golf rounds at the Club are increasing as many members are returning to the beautiful South Florida weather.

It has been said time flies when you’re having fun. This past year has flown by, and yes, it has been a busy time at Deering Bay. With the summer and fall golf season coming to an end competition, comradery and good weather were a common theme making the tournaments and programs successful. I personally would like to thank the membership for its participation in our events and golf programs during this summer and fall. Our annual summer holiday tournaments all had record breaking participation. The junior golf summer program and Parent-Child Tournament proved the future of junior golf at Deering Bay is on the rise and the future is bright.
