A M E S S A G E FROM THE PRESIDENT

I

trust that your year is off to a very good start. During my conversations with members, many have expressed their appreciation and pleasure for the spirit of optimism at the Club, and that there is a noticeable number of “new faces.” Fortunately, early indications are that membership does appear to be on the upswing. Most important to me in this new role is to communicate to our members about the clubhouse renovation project. We are committed to giving you a monthly update in an effort to keep this exciting project on time and on budget, while minimizing disruptions to our members.

Steven Sonenreich We have hired an owner’s representative, and our designers are hard at work. The first President order of business has been to prepare a schedule to address the time required for various activities, as well as an estimate of pricing for the first phase of construction. We are in the process of vetting contractors to get someone on board by the end of February. We believe that by doing this, we can mitigate some concerns about our project costs escalating. The design and entitlement work with the City will be ongoing from now until we submit permit applications in May. Also, we will be working with a variety of consultants, who will ensure we are looking at all details and areas to enhance the Club, while remaining fiscally responsible. We have had good meetings with the City to review the required approvals and the best way to expedite our project. Building and permits for final design will commence in early summer. With everything on track, the shovel should be in the ground by early fall. This project is exciting for the Club, as well as both existing and prospective members! It really has something for everyone, including greatly improved fitness spaces and offerings, a vastly improved dining experience, and an updated ambiance that is long overdue. We should have refined images and more to show you as we move through the design process. We hope you are as excited as we are about the future of our Club! The following reflects anticipated timelines for the project: • • • • • • •

January through February 2019 – Hiring of all consultants and estimate cost of phases January through April 2019 – Design development, planning and review April 2019 – Cost estimate based on all architectural, interiors, and site design End of May 2019 – Go in for permits of drawings May through end of August 2019 – Reviews by municipalities and receive permits June and July 2019 – Finalize bids and costs for project September 2019 – If all goes well, construction begins!

I look forward to seeing you all at the club.

Sincerely yours,

Steven Sonenreich President

A M E S S A G E FROM GOLF

CARE FOR OUR COURSE BUNKER CARE Bunkers are an integral component of our golf course; members are advised to take care of them when having played from a bunker.

Dave Ragan III Head Golf Professional

A number of members are not taking the time to carry out the necessary protocols after playing from the bunker. Please see photos below, which outline some basics to help in the maintenance and playability of our bunkers. A change to the Rules of Golf in 2012 allowed for much easier care of the bunkers, allowing a player to smooth sand or soil in a hazard at any time, including before playing from that hazard, provided it is for the sole purpose of caring for the course and Rule 13-2 (improving lie, area of intended stance or swing or line of play) is not breached. I offer players the following advice: Entering Bunkers (Fig. 1): Enter the bunker from the lowest possible point convenient to your golf ball. This should be your entry and exit point. Identifying this spot keeps you from walking down a steep face (possibly damaging the turf and face of the bunker). Contrary to what some golfers believe, it is not only within the rules to take a rake with you to your ball, but it is advisable to also rake behind you, as this it speeds up the process. Raking Bunkers (Fig. 2): Ensure you rake over the signs of play from the sand, the area where your club made contact with the sand, and your footprints. I recommend players rake on an angle, being careful not to pull too much sand toward you. The idea is to restore an even surface to the sand without altering the slope of the bunker. Raking away from the face of the bunker in only one direction will, overtime, cause a downward slope towards the face of the bunker, making future play more difficult. Where To Leave The Rake (Fig. 3): Make an effort to lay the rake head in the bunker and the handle near the grass edge towards a lower point in an open area of the bunker. By taking an extra few seconds, to rake bunkers appropriately and leave the rake in a more appropriate position, you make the bunker much more playable and fair for players following you on the course. This will further assist golf course maintenance staff in the overall maintenance of our course and result in improved playing conditions for all members and guests. If all players can leave a bunker in better condition than they found it, you are guaranteed to receive your share of better lies! And as we strive to improve our golf facility, taking the extra care on our course will go a long way to achieving our goals. If you have any questions on bunker or course care, please visit the Golf Shop Team and they will answer any questions you may have.

REMEMBER TO REPAIR YOUR PITCH MARKS At this time of year it is great to see so many members and guests enjoying the course and club overall. However, we are quickly seeing signs of the increased traffic with the number of unrepaired pitch marks on the greens now. We remind all member and guests that it is their responsibility to repair their pitch marks on greens, as a means of caring for the course and respecting their fellow golfers.

FEBRUARY 2019 • 10

DIVOTS IN THE WINTER Similar to pitch marks, divots seem more prominent at this time of year. This is because the Paspalum (a warm season grass species) within our fairways and tees, recovery from damage such as divots is a lot slower than during the warmer months. Therefore, filling divots correctly with sand is an even more important aspect of course etiquette at this time of year, to ensure the best quality playing surfaces for yourself and fellow golfers. Please ensure you and everyone else in your group is using the sand bucket or bottle provided, with divots filled with sand and leveled off by foot to avoid leaving a mound of sand or a depression. Thanks for your help with the care of our course, for the benefit of everyone.

A N O T E FROM TENNIS

A

s we expected we have began the New Year with many objectives in front of us. We are just two months into it and already have made significant accomplishments. On the domestic scene we are making our DBYCC tennis teams’ presence felt! We are very proud to acknowledge the USTA ladies and SFWDL teams who have shown their finest throughout the 2019 season. Gratefully, they are not the only ones supporting the tennis program. We were also able to host our Pro-Exhibition event with great feedback from our Members. Please see our calendar of events to be advised of our new schedule for February and March.

Pedro Leon Tennis Director

We are now looking forward to our future events. On February all clinics, USTA and SFWDL matches are continued as scheduled. Also, on the 7th we are hosting the Valentine’s night event where our Members will have a night of tennis, food, love and more. As always we would like to see everyone on the courts. All our events have been great successes and it is simply because of the great people participating in them. This month we are sure it will not be any different, so come and enjoy the game. In an effort to continue offering our Members the best tennis courts in town we are once again resurfacing the courts starting on February the 11th. We thank everyone for your patience and understanding as our staff work diligently to restore the courts to the level of excellence you are use to. Most important of all, we would like to remind everyone to wear the proper attire and tennis shoes. Finally, keep in mind that reservations should be made no earlier than two days in advance.

Sincerely, Pedro Leon Director of Tennis
