A M E S S A G E FROM THE PRESIDENT & THE GENERAL MANAGER

O Steven Sonenreich President

ur renovation is moving along really well. As previously communicated, the MPOA Board has approved our design for the yet to be named 19th Hole - Pool Cabana. Their cooperation is appreciated in helping us move forward with the project and the look we are trying to create. The permit has been resubmitted to the City of Coral Gable for this portion of the project. We expect it to be reviewed by the Board of Architects in their February meeting. The work continues in the Bar/Lounge area as they continue with electrical and low voltage work. They have excavated the southeast side of the building adjacent to the putting green to reroute/install back flow valve and a post indicator valve to tie in the new access to the buildings fire sprinkler system. A portion of the south wall of the Youth Room has been enclosed, as they also continue with the framing and AC work in that area. The timing of the project is moving along at the expected pace. The Bar Lounge and Youth Room have a completion date of October 14th. The Fitness Center and Group Exercise Room are slated for completion on October 22nd. The 19th Hole/Pool Bar has a construction schedule of 49 weeks once we commence with that portion. The actual opening of these venues will be dependent on inspections and receiving our Certificate of Occupancy. We do want to alert the members to some renovation work coming up that may have an impact on your use of the Club. In February, we will be replacing a portion of the AC units in the clubhouse. These are the ones that service the Bar/Lounge, Men’s and Ladies Locker Rooms on the third floor and some of the areas on the main level, most notably the men’s and ladies restrooms. This work will take about two weeks and we do not expect any major interruptions to the operation, other than a lack of AC in the rest rooms on the main level as the locker rooms and bar/lounge are closed. This work will be visible from the 16th hole as the contractor will breach the exterior wall of the clubhouse to remove the old equipment and install the new pieces. For future planning, the renovation included the replacement of our two chillers located by the first tee box. As part of the installation of the new chillers, the Club will be without AC for another two weeks. The contractor is waiting on some equipment to connect the chillers that are already here, and we expect it to be late March or April. During a portion of this time we plan on closing the kitchen and replacing the floor in the main kitchen as a capital project since we won’t have AC. We will work through the details of this and communicate them in the near future. Golf and Tennis will go on as scheduled without interruption. On the Membership front, Shannon and Daniella have been very busy with prospects, tours and new member orientations. They are also kicking off the new Ambassador Program, and there is more detail on the Membership page in this edition. January 2021 is off to a good start compared to 2020. In January 2021 we anticipate a net loss of only 3 members, for various reasons compared to a net loss of 29 members in January of 2020. This is an 87% improvement year over year in the net member count for January 2021 compared to January 2020. As we gained 10 new members in 2021, compared to 9 new members in 2020, is strong indicator of member satisfaction. Please join us in welcoming the 10 new members that joined our Club in the month of January. Jimmy Germana and the Golf Course Maintenance crew continue to work diligently on the greens. They have shown good improvement over the past few

As we enter into the second month of the year we are really getting into the rhythms of our high season. We have definitely seen an uptick in activities around the Club. The new year started off with some new outdoor fitness options for those still looking for a healthier start to 2021. Walkin’ and Rockin’ with Renny is held each Monday starting at 7 am on the 16th tee box. As the temps warm up and sunrise comes earlier it is a great start to your day with a power walk around our beautiful community. Renny leads this class that lasts about one hour, is socially distanced and is fun for all. We also have a Zumba class on Thursdays at the pool. You have the option to do it in the pool or on the deck.

Peter Serena General Manager

We have also started with our member events in Golf and Tennis. The Men’s Team Championship, WGA Frozen and Cars and Coffee have already taken place. We have another Callaway Demo Day, Super Bowl Tailgate to Go Party, Trinchero Family Estates Wine Tasting and a slate of DBKT and family activities ahead in February with events for all our members to enjoy. Food and Beverage introduced a new menu revision last week. This winter menu will feature a 30% change to the previous menu. I hope you all will come out to either enjoy at the Club or try via our Curbside option. Nick and Chef Jon also rolled out a new bar menu. Additionally, Chef Jon has a special Valentine’s Dinner planned for you. More information on that is available in the newsletter. One last F&B note to the membership, just a reminder that the Club is now OPEN for dinner on Tuesday nights. A big shout out to the USTA Ladies Senior 3.0 and 3.5 teams that both won their league championships! Congratulations to your successful seasons and demonstrating the strength of our tennis program here at Deering Bay. Our new Committee year also kicked off in January. We want to thank all those who have volunteered their time and talents to make Deering Bay a better place for everyone. This year our committees will be even more important as we prepare for the reopening of the new areas. On the COVID front, we encourage those eligible to seek out the vaccine. That will certainly help to keep you and those around you a bit safer. The Club remains vigilant in monitoring members and associates with temperature taking and daily welfare checks. We are also staying steadfast in our sanitation and following all the guidelines. Please remember to wear your masks, keep your distance and wash your hands frequently. Sincerely, Steven Sonenreich Peter J. Serena President General Manager FEBRUARY 2021 • 5

weeks as a culmination of practices and weather combine to promote growth. Please be sensitive to the newly sodded areas. A gentle reminder to all that repairing ball marks on greens will help them heal faster and promote a smoother roll for all. Jimmy will continue with his updates and he expects you will see significant improvement by mid-month from where we were in December and early January.

Sharing the Love

F Shannon Mattes Director of Membership & Mktg

ebruary is the month of love and there’s SO much to love at Deering Bay! Our membership, as well as the staff, make up the Club that we love to call our home away from home. At the Club, we continue to enjoy outdoor activities such as golf and tennis, biking and walking, swimming, dining, and making new connections. Considering what is going on outside our gates, except for a few limitations, we have everything we need right here! Deering Bay continues to be the safest place to live, play, and spend your time! We continue to welcome new members each month who have just moved to the area looking to meet new friends and form lasting connections. Our new Ambassador Club will be a great way for current members to share their love of Deering Bay with our newcomers. We have had the privilege of welcoming over 60 new members to the Club since last February and are excited to match them with a member! Ambassador matching is an art! Daniella Tosta, our Member Experience Manager, meets with Club staff to discuss each and every new member and determines the best “match.” The criteria we look at include the Club activities and interests of the new member, hometown, age, and family members. Once we find common ground, the Ambassador is assigned and instructed to contact the new member. Each Ambassador is instructed to have a minimum of three contacts with their new member. During the pandemic, everything situation looks different – but these contacts can be a phone call, text, email, walk, or a meeting at the Club for lunch, drinks, golf, tennis or both! We are always looking for Ambassadors! If you are interested in participating, contact Daniella Tosta for more information.

Keeping up with Communications If the COVID 19 pandemic has taught us anything, it’s the importance of keeping you connected. Dr. Amy D. Ronner, wife of Michael P. Pacin, MD, has published her sixth book, Dostoevsky as Suicidologist:

Self-Destruction and the Creative Process. It is available on Amazon or Lexington Books, an imprint of Rowman & Littlefield. Dr. Ronner would be happy to sign any books purchased. L ITERATURE | S OCIOLOGY | P SYCHOLOGY Series Editors: Marcia Morris, Georgetown University

Through an analysis of suicide in Fyodor Dostoevsky’s writings, Amy D. Ronner illustrates how his implicit awareness of self-homicide pre-figured theories of prominent suicidologists, shaped both his philosophy and craft as a writer, and forged a ligature between artistry and the pluripresent impulse to self-annihilate.

Amy D. Ronner is professor emeritus of law at St. Thomas University and author of Dostoevsky and the Law.

S UICIDOLOGIST

“In her sixth book, Dostoevsky as Suicidologist, Ronner brings her razor-sharp legal mind to bear on the incalculable mystery of suicide and Dostoevsky’s many representations of it. Through the lens of Durkheim’s classic work, Suicide, but also with reference to the works of many other theorists and social thinkers, Ronner expands our understanding of Dostoevsky’s oeuvre in unexpected ways while deepening our general knowledge about the nature of suicide.” —Robin Feuer Miller, Brandeis University

AS

“Of all the sins committed by Dostoevsky’s characters, murder is surely the most horrifying and, of all murders, self-murder the most shocking. In this groundbreaking new study, Ronner provides us with a theoretical lens through which to penetrate suicide’s mysteries and find purpose within its seeming purposelessness. This is a foundational book that makes a major contribution to Dostoevsky studies while simultaneously illuminating a dark spot within the culture of nineteenth-century Russia as a whole.” —Marcia A. Morris, professor emerita, Georgetown University

D OSTOEVSKY

“Fyodor Dostoevsky is much too capacious and universally inspiring to be the property of narrow specialists. For some time, Russian scholars have admired law professor Amy D. Ronner’s ability to set Dostoevsky’s works in conversation with contemporary legal issues. This new book brings out in full measure her brilliance as a literary critic and scholar. The centrality of suicide in Dostoevsky’s work has not escaped notice, but this is the first book devoted entirely to the problem, and it does so with a dazzlingly multidisciplinary framework. But most impressive is Ronner’s rigorous, unfailingly insightful close reading of Dostoevsky’s post-exile writing. Dostoevsky as Suicidologist: Self-Destruction and the Creative Process is accessible and unjargonated. It is highly recommended for anyone who would more deeply understand Dostoevsky’s fiction and aesthetics.” —William Mills Todd III, professor emeritus, Harvard University

A N O T E FROM TENNIS

W Pedro Leon Tennis Director

inter is the coldest season, and here at Deering Bay we welcomed it with a smile. We are happy to see our tennis family taking full advantage of the beautiful weather and some new faces playing tennis. Once again we would like to extend big congratulations to our 3.0 and 3.5 ladies senior teams on their championship. As temperatures decrease our tennis programs heats up towards an exciting month. February will be one of our most eventful months. In addition to our regularly scheduled clinics, we have a number of USTA and South Florida Doubles matches that all promise to be well attended. We are also offering on Thursday, February 11, a Valentine’s doubles event and on Saturday, February 20 a Mix doubles member/member or guest social. We can’t wait to see you all there! Throughout the years of working here, we have heard this generalized complaint about playing against counterpunchers. Therefore, this month we would like to talk to you, our membership, in regards to it. Competitive players of all levels find a great challenge when playing against a *counterpuncher; they are difficult to play because they get every ball back. Players who use this style of play have an incredible amount of patience and mental toughness, but they are not unbeatable. Throughout our professional career and the experience working with many players of all levels, we identified some tactics for competing against counterpunchers and we are going to share them with you. The number one tactic is to neutralize like a champ. This means that when playing this type of player it is very common to go for low percentage shots when you are out of position because you are not comfortable playing offensively. It is wiser to neutralize when out of position with a deep ball down the middle. Next month we will continue with more of these tactics. The tennis family wishes everyone a happy February and look forward to seeing you on the courts. *Counterpunchers are players who return every ball. They are very patient and mentally tough in the sport of Tennis.

Yours Truly, Pedro Leon Director of Tennis
