A M E S S A G E FROM THE PRESIDENT

H

ello and Happy New Year to all! It’s hard to believe another year has come and gone. As we continue to strive to improve the performance and dynamics of the Club on all levels, I would like to take this time to reflect on our accomplishments over the past year and to touch on what to expect throughout this coming year.

Larry Woerner President

Golf course conditions throughout the year were splendid and despite a rough fall season with an unexpected visit from Hurricane Irma, we have managed to get the course in spectacular shape again. Special kudos goes out to Jimmy Germana and his team for an amazing job well done. Our Kids & Teens department saw great success as the weekly number of summer camp attendees doubled from previous years. Women’s Tennis qualified for the USTA State Championships for the first time in the Club’s history! Golf continues to bring us several great events like the Parent-Child Tournament and WGA Battle for the Bay. And of course, our dining and social department continues to showcase that you don’t have to venture far in order to receive a great memorable experience in just one place. I even heard that we will be hosting a Murder-Mystery Dinner here at the Club in June, something that I’m sure you and your guest(s) will truly enjoy. However, we can’t do this alone. Behind every great team there’s a committee assisting and guiding the way. As we continue to enhance the Club experience, and if you are someone who wants to see the Club improve and evolve towards its full potential, then we need you to serve on one of our committees. This will provide you the ideal opportunity to observe Club operations and provide better ideas pertaining to club issues. Our committees are listed below. If you are interested in learning more, please don’t hesitate to see Karen Harmon or myself so we may set up a meeting between you and the committee chairperson. • • • • • • •

Finance Fitness & Tennis Golf & Green House Legal & By-Laws Long Range Planning Membership

We close 2017 in a reasonably solid financial position. Over the last few years we have been able to fully fund our operations through a combination of the revenue charged for dining and activities combined with the dues received. Thus we have been able to essentially cover all regular expenses (this includes not only our “normal” operating expenses but also other commitments such as our MPOA charges, land lease payments and what we pay Troon in management and related fees). However, where we have a challenge is to generate funds for needed deferred maintenance and any capital improvements that are decided by the membership. Over the last 15 years, our members have been paying the monthly AEPP/LTI charges which go towards paying off our debt as well as generating funds for needed deferred maintenance/emergency capital improvements (over the last few years this has included, among other things, items such as new furniture in the dining room, improved kitchen equipment, repairing our HVAC coolers, new pool furniture, reformed pump house on the golf course, upgraded internal computer systems, etc.) Many members will have fulfilled their 15 year AEPP/LTI commitment in early 2018 thus reducing the inflow of funds available to the Club for needed repairs and upgrades. This, along with other key items will be addressed by your Board and presented and discussed with the full membership. As I look at our main priorities for 2018, four things come to mind:

JANUARY 2018 • 4

1) Continue to deliver impeccable service to our members while enhancing the programs we offer. We will work closely with Troon to take full advantage of the expertise and resources they provide to their clients so as to provide a truly premier club experience while staying within our budget. 2) In the upcoming months, we will begin to develop specific ideas for a facilities improvement plan which will guide us to designing the “club of the future” - taking into account the needs of the current and future membership. We will be working closely with Troon to see what has worked well at other clubs and we will be engaging our full membership with alternatives for potentially bold improvements in our physical plant. Once a firm proposal is developed – with a potential financing model – we will hold informational sessions with our members. Any project of this type will need to be approved by members so we are fully committed to a transparent and open approach. I want to emphasize - ideas are always welcome!! If you have something you would like to share, no matter how big or small, make sure to share them with Karen or a Board member. 3) Ensure a solid financial footing for 2018 and beyond. This will entail reviewing the existing AEPP/LTI charges (where our receipts will begin to rapidly diminish during 2018) as well as developing a long term capital plan to fund the improvements described in item 2. Just to be clear – any modification of the AEPP/LTI program as well as a longterm capital funding program will go before the full equity membership for discussion, debate and eventual approval. 4) And, most important of all, work to expand our membership numbers. The total number of members has been relatively stagnant for several years – for us to ensure a solid, financially viable, premier Club for many years in the future we will need to increase our membership numbers. Clearly a full year for your Board, Karen and her team!! In closing, I want to thank David Baron, Ferne Kalstone and Wini Kinney for their time on the Board. Our Club is truly privileged to have had the benefit of the wisdom, insight and dedication of these three individuals. The Club is a better place due to your years of service on the Board. Congratulations to the new 2018 Board of Directors. I look forward to serving as your new President as we continue to make DBYCC the ultimate club experience. Also, a big thank you goes out to Karen Harmon and her incredible staff that continue to oversee and progress the day-to-day operation of the Club. Nothing would be possible if it were not for their amazing support and assistance.

Best Regards,

Larry Woerner President

A N O T E FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER/COO

H

ere we are again wrapping up the interesting and fun filled year that was 2017. We are always grateful for your continued support and hope that you celebrated the last few calendar days with us. We’ve continued our trend of success despite a few challenges. We’ve seen an increase in all departments. Every year the decision you make to continually spend your free time with us does not go unnoticed and we appreciate it.

Karen Harmon General Manager/ COO

The late great Arnold Palmer had a vision when he had his sights set to make Deering Bay one of the best golf courses in South Florida. The course has seen its fair share of challenges in 2017 due to the impact of Hurricane Irma and we thank you for your patience. In mid-December we completed our bunker renovation project and I’m happy to say that our course is back to its pristine condition. With that said, please keep in mind that throughout the year we will continue working on the aesthetics of the course for both your viewing and playing pleasure. A little etiquette goes a long way and these are some general Club housekeeping rules to keep aware of for the New Year. A note about the parking situation at the Club: management has noticed an uptick of Club goers who are parking in assigned spaces designated for those who are disabled/handicapped. If you need to have a closer parking space assigned to you, please see me and I’ll be delighted to discuss your options. Please keep in mind that the valet ramp is an active working area at all times and that no vehicle should ever be parked there. As for Club attire, we are strictly enforcing the dress code. If you have a question about an article of clothing please refer to the House Rules that may be found on the Club’s website or see a member of our leadership team. As a common courtesy and in order to accommodate everyone in a timely manner, dining reservations are strongly recommended. This way the staff can plan for meals throughout the day without disruption of service and cater to your personal dining preferences. The success of any entity lies within the foundation of the values and culture that is consistently executed every day. That being said I would like to take the time to recognize our staff in all departments, for without whom none of this would be possible. There were several challenges that we all faced together and the staff still made it their priority to provide you with the best service possible. On a sad note though, Cynthia, our Controller is moving on to another adventure in her life. We wish her continued success and glad we were a part of her journey. We always like to hear what you’re thinking and although your comments/suggestions are available year round, what better way to execute change than to become a part of a committee. If you are interested in more information please see myself or one of the members of your newly elected 2018 Board of Directors whom are listed below: Larry Woerner, President; Richard Pollack, Vice President; Rob Sperber, Treasurer; Sarah Kuhn, Secretary; John Marshall, Director; Jimmie Dresnick, Director; Dick Griesemer, Director; Gaston Legorburu, Director; Steven Sonenreich, Director On that note, I’d like to thank the following departing Board members; Mr. David Baron, Mrs. Ferne Kalstone & Mrs. Winnie Kinney. Thank you for your commitment to the Club and we wish you all well. On behalf of the staff, I’d like to wish you and yours all the best for 2018! We look forward to seeing everyone around the Club for what is going to be another great year ON THE BAY. And as always, if you have any questions, comments or concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact me at 305.964.4048 - k.harmon@dbycc.com or stop by my office; my door is always open.

All the best,

Karen Harmon General Manager/COO JANUARY 2018 • 6
