A M E S S A G E FROM THE PRESIDENT

I

am pleased to report that after substantial project diligence, the board approved at its April 18th meeting a construction budget of $7.1M. It is intended for construction to begin by October of this year and be completely by July 2020. During this initial phase of construction we included what was considered to be the priority elements of the renovation and to stay within our budget. Along with the updated construction schedule below, you will see what is in Phase 1 and what items will be revisited post Phase 1.

Steven Sonenreich President

There are two fundamental reasons for the board’s decision to limit the scope of the project at this time. First and foremost, a $7.1M budget is in our comfort zone of affordability. Secondly but of equal importance, is approximately $1.5M of deferred capital and maintenance discovered in the diligence process. Unfortunately, our club has had a long history of not funding depreciation and this must be addressed as part of this renovation. On a going forward basis we must understand that depreciation is a real cost and must be considered as we budget each year. I have challenged our team to begin the 2020 budget planning process early this year, so that we can best plan and limit disruption as the renovations progress. Business issues aside, the club is going to be exceptional when these long overdue renovations are completed and the experience for our members will be significantly enhanced. We will be well positioned for growing membership as well. Also, at the last board meeting we were presented with our 2018 audit results. We were pleased to receive a clean audit with no audit adjustments. Congratulations to Jenny Hecheverria and her team for an outstanding job managing our financial operations. Our auditors also provided several interesting performance benchmarks for our education and planning. Most notable are that our dues and fees are nearly 6% lower than our peer group. I want our membership to be aware of metrics as we plan for the future and understand our role as members to have an elite country club. Thank you for your support as we embark upon a wonderful journey to enhance our country club. Sincerely, Steven Sonenreich President

*Property improvements include: banquet roof repairs, some existing window replacements, exterior painting, minor plumbing repairs in cart storage, HVAC upgrades and replacement, and electrical utility service upgrades (FPL service not included). May 2019 • 4

A N O T E FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER/COO

A

s the spring season comes to a close, my team and I are busy preparing for the summer months as we plan many activities and events for your enjoyment. All departmental team members are poised and ready to execute our Club’s vision for the summer and remainder of 2019. As we advance through this vision, we kindly encourage you to work with us toward sustaining our mission of maintaining service excellence in all aspects of our operations.

Lee Andrea General Manager/ COO

In upcoming editions of our newsletter, we will continue to outline more definitive plans for the coming months, including any golf operations activities and food and beverage menu updates. As has been the case in past years, please note that the Club and golf course will be closed from Monday, July 8, through Thursday, July 18, for our muchneeded annual summer refresh project. During this period, we conduct staff training, work on food & beverage menu updates, and make improvements around the Club. Classes and services at the fitness center will continue to be available during this time. I extend my sincerest thanks and appreciation to the board, the various committees, our members, and the Troon corporate team for their relentless support, thoughtful recommendations, and expression of appreciation for our Club staff’s diligence and dedication to serving. My team members are aware of the need to maintain our Club’s tradition of professionalism and unparalleled customer service levels. Serving you in a timely and efficient manner continues to be the hallmark of our existence. In the spirit of expanding our membership base, we encourage you to continue serving as one of our most ardent supporters by referring our Club membership to your friends and families. My open-door policy will continue to be a forum for sharing your ideas and concerns. It is always a pleasure serving you, and I look forward to serving you again soon. Cheers, Lee Andrea General Manager/COO

ou will be seeing several changes around the clubhouse this month. In an effort to keep our membership informed with our upcoming social and golf events we now have two flat-screen TVs displaying our monthly events. One of the TVs is located by the hostess stand and the other in the golf pro-shop. Our beautiful Arnold Palmer Signature Championship course is also displayed on each TV.

John Gale Director of Mktg. & Membership

In keeping up with technology, our aerial golf course tour will also be displayed in each DBYCC golf cart. The aerial tour will be paired with the golf cart’s current GPS system. This will allow our members and guest to get a better view of each hole! The aerial course tour will also be available on the club’s website and social media accounts. So please feel free to share your beautiful course with your friends and colleagues. We are very excited to be launching our very own video blog series this month. Troon will be distributing our video blogs throughout their social media networks. Stay tuned for the release date of our very first episode. In the meantime, while you wait for the first episode make sure you keep up-to-date with what is going on at the club by viewing our Instagram and Facebook accounts. Daniella has been doing a great job posting photos and videos of our events.

A special congratulations goes to…

LESLIE DEBAUGE who is the winner of the Membership Ambassador Raffle for the Month of May. Ms. DeBauge, thank you for your referral. Please see Daniella or myself in the Membership Office to receive your prize of a Brunch for two with mimosas or a Golf Foursome.

A M E S S A G E FROM GOLF

I Dave Ragan III Head Golf Professional

t is the end of another season at Deering Bay Yacht & Country Club and I’m thrilled to report to you that the improvements we have made on the golf course, golf carts, online tee sheet and the events we conducted throughout the season make me proud to be your Golf Professional. The golf course was gorgeous; with the additional landscaping in some of our retention areas and some of our off-course areas, the course is second to none in beauty and extremely challenging to play. Showcased by our recent memberguest tournaments, club championships, member events, and guest play validates my appraisal. A number of this year’s participants had not played in a signature Deering Bay event in several years. Many of these seasons guest were visiting our paradise for the first time. Guest’s comments are wonderful barometers upon which you can rate the quality of an event or a golf course. It was so satisfying to hear remarks complimenting the conditions not only for these majors, but throughout the entire 2018-19 golf season. Our paspalum fairways were plusher than ever and the greens rolled true and fast. It was as if Deering Bay was prepared for a “Major” golf tournament throughout the season. We are looking forward to entering into a wonderful Summer Season! I’m happy to announce the club has entered into a Reciprocal Golf Program which is an exciting and unique benefit to Golf Members of Deering Bay. As a golf member, you will have reciprocal playing privileges at several other quality clubs in the area. This program does not grant membership privileges at the other participating facilities, but it does allow Golf Members to play other courses at greatly reduced rates. Locally the reciprocal participating clubs include: Coral Ridge Country Club, Weston Hills, Crandon Golf-Key Biscayne, Ft. Lauderdale Country Club, La Gorce Country Club, Riviera Country Club, and The Links at Fisher Island. The reciprocity agreement begins May 30-October 15, 2019. The 2019-20 golf calendar is shaping up to be a busy one including more social, couples and youth activities, so please check out the calendar and make sure you view the details of the golf events on the DBYCC website. Sign up early to secure your place in all our activities because many events will fill up fast! We’re anticipating the best golf course conditions ever, and an increase in participation in all the events. With the spring golf season coming to an end competition, comradery and good weather were a common theme making the tournaments and programs successful. I personally would like to thank the membership for its participation in our events and golf programs during this fall, winter & spring. On behalf of the entire golf staff here at Deering Bay I sincerely wish you and your family a happy, healthy and safe summer!

Best regards, Dave Ragan III Head Golf Professional

A N O T E FROM TENNIS

S

ummer is very much on its way and here on our clay courts we are making history every day. Please read on and find out what is happening with our Tennis family.

Our teams have had a great season and lots of competitions. The USTA 3.5 senior team once again captured the regional first place and now is getting ready to represent us in the sectional championship. All the ladies have worked extremely hard and we would like to congratulate them for the great job that they did.

Pedro Leon Tennis Director

On the evening of May the 2nd, we will host a Mexican night round robin. All of our members and guests will have the opportunity to show off their tennis skills while they enjoy Mexican food and margaritas prepared by our chef. We want to take the time to welcome the new tennis maintenance person, Jorge Esposito. We are confident that Jorge will be a true asset to our tennis department. In May, all of our ladies’ tennis leagues come to an end that is why on Saturday, June 1st we will offer an end of the season round robin and barbecue event where we expect a large participation. With this being said, we would like to wish you a safe and wonderful month. Sincerely, Pedro Leon Director of Tennis

Max’s Selections of the Month

Concha Y Toro, Block 5 Sauvignon Blanc, Terrunyo, Costa Los Boldos Vineyard, Casablanca Valley, Chile, 2017 The Sauvignon Blanc grape originates from Bordeaux one of the best wine growing regions in France. This grape cultivates very well in many wine growing regions in the world such as Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and the US. (California & Washington) just to mention a few. The wine you will be enjoying this month is a single vineyard and single block from the Casablanca Valley, I truly enjoy this wine and look forward to pouring it for you at the Club. This wine displays notes of lemon-lime, melon, grapefruit and an undertone of passion fruit with hints of minerality moving onto a polished crisp finish. G: $12 | B: $40.50
