DEANGELIS DIAMOND

LOOKING BACK | LOOKING AHEAD

2020 will be a year we will all remember. No one could have imagined the global crisis we would all face. We were inspired by the stories of courage, sacrifice, and bravery our first responders, healthcare, and essential workers shared. We honor them and are thankful to have them. We also couldn’t be prouder and more inspired by everyone at DeAngelis Diamond who led, as great leaders do through a crisis, with calm, responsible, and caring leadership. Together they accomplished incredible projects and inspired others in the face of a global pandemic. What our team members do is challenging, complex, and dangerous. They do it because they love it. And if you ask them, they will say it’s worth it because they have the honor to build essential places where people live, heal, learn, work, and worship. Last year we pledged to get through this time of uncertainty and challenge together, as a team, without any layoffs. Not only did we honor that pledge, we added 43 new high performers to our team. As we head into our 25th year of serving our clients, team members, and communities, we look forward to unveiling our plans to honor those who have honored us. Thank you to everyone who has joined us in our mission. We are blessed to be on this journey together and look forward to what God has planned for DeAngelis Diamond in 2021.

YEARS 2021

As we celebrate 25 years in business, it would be impossible to thank everyone who played a role in this organization’s great success. We began with a vision to create a construction company that would be distinctly different from the industry: to develop serving-leaders who authentically live out our mission and values every day, model the way for others to follow, and take seriously the Honor to Build. We are overwhelmed with gratitude for God’s continued provision and these most talented leaders who are deeply committed to a culture that is innovative, collaborative, and Built on Safety. Over the course of our anniversary year, we’re giving $250,000 to local charities and $25,000 to our employees to honor those who have given so much to us. We invite you to follow along as we unveil each gift online at www.dd25years.com

TOGETHER WE WILL RISE UP AND LEAD 2020 will be a year we will all remember. In the last 12 months, we’ve faced instability, uncertainty, and even frustration as we navigated life amidst a global pandemic. While we wouldn’t have asked for the hardships 2020 brought, it has shown us when there is a challenge, together we will rise and lead.

We are proud of every single person at DeAngelis Diamond, who led through this time of crisis with calm, responsible, and caring leadership. They responded with a vision to keep safety a priority, while still providing the service our clients and community have come to expect from us. What our team members do is challenging, complex, and dangerous enough, and we are incredibly grateful for all we’ve accomplished safely as we continue to provide places to live, heal, learn, work, and worship across the nation.

To develop authentic relationships and have a positive influence on everyone we meet.

CULTURE

2020 | 2021

When people invest their careers with us we believe we owe them the best opportunity to reach their retirement goals. That’s why we unveiled DD Wealth Builders. This significant and meaningful wealth building plan removes all the traditional 401K barriers, providing a 100% match on 6% of a salary, with no vesting scheduling or wait period, with an additional discretionary profit-sharing match up to 4%! Our goal is to help everyone become savers/investors, retain high-performers, and have a positive financial impact on our team members’ lives.

Everyone at DeAngelis Diamond is a leader. To help our leaders grow in skill and confidence we formed the DeAngelis Diamond Leadership Institute. In 2020, we celebrated our first graduation, began a new class, and announced the accepted candidates who start their DDLI journey in 2021!

Each year, DeAngelis Diamond team members nominate one field and one office peer, whom they think authentically lives out our core values, to be named Ambassador of the Year. This year, in loving memory of team member Ryan Overmyer, the award was renamed in his honor. Corey Anderson and Randy Stewart were recognized as our 2020 Ryan Overmyer Award Recipients.

Out of the many awards we received, we are extremely proud to list Florida Trend’s 2020 Best Company To Work For In Florida among them. This one is special to us because it’s awarded based on feedback given directly by our team members. Thank you for helping rank us as one of the best!

When we say our mission is to have a positive influence on everyone we meet, we mean everyone. To do that well, we need diverse team members. We are committed to making DeAngelis Diamond a place where everyone feels included, welcomed, and has the same access and opportunities. We are not there yet, but we are passionate about this journey. Last year our DEI team helped us become aware of our unconscious biases, improved our hiring process, began open discussions of shared experiences, surveyed our people to ask how we can improve our culture, and are engaging experts to show us ways we can do better.

LOOKING BACK MOST TO LOOK INNOVATIVE AHEAD

RSW—AIRPORT TRAFFIC CONTROL TOWER

MOST INNOVATIVE

Project that utilized new technologies and systems or innovative ways to use technologies on the job The Southwest Florida International Airport—Airport Traffic Control Tower was awarded Most Innovative due to the many inventive solutions this team created to meet project needs, as well as saving time and money on the project overall. They approached BIM head on with structured phasing plans that mirrored the project construction schedule. Durations are assigned for completing the BIM process and our phased completion dates occurred well in advance of any installations. The team also utilized features from the BIM toolset, such as the clash detection software. This helped them identify elements such as electrical conduit or ductwork that would run into a beam. By modeling these things first, clashes are discovered early, and costly on-site clashes were reduced. The steel of the tower was divided into four main segments fabricated on a concrete pad at ground level, then later hoisted to the top of the tower. Each segment was 47’ tall and weighed 37,000 pounds. Erecting the steel on the ground allowed us to apply the intumescent fire proofing to the steel earlier, contributing to the schedule being pulled back by just over a month. Over 300 tons of steel were used between the tower and TRACON building.

MOST UNIQUE

NAPLES COMMUNITY HOSPITAL BAKER ED Project that presented unique challenges or obstacles to overcome It can be difficult to pick a project for Most Unique because even the seemingly run of the mill project can produce its share of obstacles. Naples Community Hospital Baker ED wins the 2020 award for Most Unique because before COVID-19 entered the picture it was set to be one of our most challenging projects to date. Three phases being constructed at the same time, multiple unidentified existing utilities, two separate mechanical firms, and interior phasing and ICRA to meet hospital operational needs were some of the challenges this team faced.

DESIGN SOLUTION

2020 | 2021

From the beginning, Marina Bay 880 required an extensive, collaborative value engineering exercise between the owners, design team, and DeAngelis Diamond. Our team composed a log of over 125 potential cost saving opportunities for which over 80% were accepted. Six months after the project was awarded, we were able to provide even more savings with an overall 10% reduction in costs. This equated to approximately $5M.

However, once Phase 2 began, recreating the design intent from Phase 1 was no longer an option. Throughout the design development, subsequent budgeting, and subcontractor pricing exercises, the team formulated creative solutions for a hybrid structural design to reduce load requirements. This change resulted in a reduction of deep foundation requirements, a change to timber piles in lieu of precast concrete, modification of the interior floor framing to shop-fabricated wood trusses over post tensioned concrete, and a single sloped wood roof truss to eliminate lightweight insulating concrete from the roof system. With these structural modifications, the team provided the same interior and exterior finish expectations while maximizing the value for the cost per gross square foot.

Our top pick for Project of the Year Under $10M is the Eye Surgery Center of Elizabethtown located in Kentucky. Breaking ground in March, this project began in the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. It overcame obstacles of every kind while procuring materials with limited travel due to restrictions, all while having a positive influence on one another and the entire community. Despite the hardships, this project still finished 6 weeks ahead of schedule and under budget.

Arthrex Global Headquarters has been the largest project to date in DeAngelis Diamond history. From start to finish, the team faced many exciting challenges including taking an existing canal and burying it underground to make space for a sports field and building a storm capture system underneath a paver parking lot in order to manage the stormwater. While there were many firsts for DeAngelis Diamond on the construction side, we celebrated a first on the technology side with our introduction of Procore.
