The Deerfield Park District endeavors to keep its facilities and programs operating whenever possible. There may be times; however, when weather, road conditions or facility malfunctions dictate that programs and/or services must be canceled or temporarily postponed or entire facilities closed. In such cases, Deerfield Park District reserves the right to close a particular facility or cancel a program based on the following criteria: • Whenever an unscheduled closing or cancellation occurs, the park district will make every effort to communicate to patrons via the park district Weather Hotline (847-317-2555), the website deerfieldparks.org, and the metropolitan Chicago Emergency Closing Center website emergencyclosingcenter.com. • Local School Closings: Whenever School District 109 cancels school due to snow related weather conditions, all Deerfield Park District Preschool classes and all programs held at school sites will also be canceled. Closing other park district facilities or canceling classes will be made on a case by case basis. Park district facilities themselves will remain open for nonscheduled activities (e.g. fitness center use, registration, etc.) unless specifically directed to close due to weather conditions. • Facility Specific Conditions: In the event that conditions prompting closing arise at a specific facility (e.g. high winds, power outages, equipment malfunctions, flooding), classes may be canceled or the facility temporarily closed until the condition has been resolved. • ThorGuard Lightning Prediction Systems are installed at all parks, pools and schools in Deerfield. See General Information section for more information. • The following are contact numbers regarding the cancellation of programs due to poor or unsafe weather conditions:

KEEPING YOU SAFE

COVID-19

WHAT WE ARE DOING TO KEEP YOU SAFE

At the Deerfield Park District, the safety of our participants and visitors is our top priority. We have always been committed to providing safe and clean programs and facilities to the community. In accordance with state and local governmental orders, we are taking extra precautions to stay safe and healthy. This includes extensive cleaning protocols and social distancing practices in our facilities.

Masks and Face Coverings ‣ All staff, participants and visitors must wear face masks/coverings while in our facilities and in every class. ‣ For outside activities, participants and visitors can be unmasked when they are able to maintain 6 feet of social distance, except if specific activity guidelines exist.

Social Distancing & Group Sizes ‣ A minimum of 6-ft of social distancing is required at our indoor and outdoor facilities. ‣ Some of our programs have been adjusted by reducing program sizes, altering activities and staggering start times. ‣ Signage at parks and facilities and messaging on our website encourages social distancing at group size and capacity limits.

Hand Washing & Sanitizing ‣ Staff and visitors are recommended to wash hands often with soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the restroom, before eating, and after blowing their nose, coughing, or sneezing. ‣ Hands free sanitizer stations are available throughout our facilities.

Cleaning & Common Areas ‣ In addition to regular maintenance, the park district has enhanced cleaning and disinfecting procedures for frequently touched objects and surfaces throughout the day. ‣ Cleaning and disinfecting before and after each class is conducted in compliance with CDC protocols. ‣ Water fountains will remain turned off at this time; we encourage labeled water bottle use.

How You Can Help Keep Yourself & Others Safe ‣ If you are experiencing cold or flu symptoms, have a fever or have been exposed to someone with COVID-19, please stay home and protect other participants, visitors, and staff. ‣ Avoid contact with others that are sick or experiencing COVID-19 like symptoms. ‣ Use proper cough and sneeze etiquette. ‣ Avoid touching your face with unwashed hands. We care about your health. The COVID-19 pandemic is serious. Please be respectful of staff and fellow visitors and understand that our staff are providing the best experience possible given the current limitations. CDC and state government procedures change frequently. We will adapt to those changes as necessary.

BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS Dear Neighbors,

One of the first highlights of 2021 was receiving Illinois Distinguished Accredited Agency status from the Illinois Association of Park Districts and Illinois Parks & Recreation Association. The qualifications to receive this status are vigorous. In the field of Parks and Recreation, this is our Grammy, this is our Olympic Medal. We are thrilled to share this recognition with you and to utilize honed practices to further improve our quality of services to the Deerfield community. The Deerfield Park District also debuted a refreshed logo family in January. Logos were updated to showcase services through a unified brand with five coordinated logos including the Park District, Deerfield Golf Club, FORE Restaurant, Patty Turner Center and Sachs Recreation Center. After School Club has returned to all District 109 elementary schools now that in-person instruction has resumed. We are happy to be able to provide this programming in partnership with the schools, coinciding with their current curriculum schedule. Virtual programs were new to our district a year ago due to indoor restrictions and safety concerns, but we now label them as bonus programming that allows additional accommodations for you to choose how, when and where you want to recreate. Having an All Access Membership pass at the Sachs Recreation Center that allows access for in-person programming as well as online options provides a more flexible schedule that may be just the right fit for you. Another new district feature is a partnership with RUSH Physical Therapy, now open within the Sachs Recreation Center. They have highly trained clinicians that are devoted to achieving each patient’s goals and ultimately improving your quality of life. Please call 224-285-1004 to learn more about their services.

PARK DISTRICT BOARD MEETINGS

The groundhog seeing his shadow is not a foolproof method of knowing when spring temperatures will arrive, but here at the Park District, we plan for spring programs, events and facility openings regardless of the temperatures outdoors. Weather dependent, we hope to have folks out at the Deerfield Golf Club in March (fingers crossed). While you await the opening of the course, you can register now to secure a weekend permanent tee-time as there are still a few time slots available. Looking for a way to improve the environment and beautify your yard? On April 22 join us at the Patty Turner Center as we partner with Red’s Garden Center of Northbrook to host a Native Plant Sale. A wide variety of indigenous plants will be featured and available for sale at this outdoor, community-wide event. And as you plan early for spring, summer and fall get-togethers, consider renting a pavilion at one of the Deerfield Parks. Group size will depend on current local and state guidelines. Rentals can be secured at deerfieldparks.org beginning March 1 for residents and April 1 for nonresidents. We look forward to getting back outside and hosting you at the Deerfield Parks, facilities and amenities throughout the community. Stay safe and be well.

Board of Commissioners

Deerfield Park District is a municipal governing agency established to provide parks, recreation facilities and programs for residents. Five elected commissioners govern the district and set general policies. Regular meetings of the Board of Park Commissioners are held at JPCC at 7 PM on the third Thursday of each month. Virtual meetings may be held when in person public meetings are deemed not safe or practical.

The public is welcome to attend. Schedule changes are posted at JPCC and here.

DEERFIELD PARK DISTRICT PRESCHOOL SAFETY GUIDELINES

PRESCHOOL

Deerfield Park District understands the feeling of uncertainty during these unprecedented times. Please be assured, safety is our top priority for all participants and staff. Before classes begin, all employees are trained on Deerfield Park District’s health and safety protocols that are aligned with DCFS, IDPH, CDC and DCEO. All precautions will be taken, including frequent hand hygiene, wearing facial coverings, health screenings with temperature checks, physical distancing, and restricted access to our classrooms. Click to read our detailed management plan. *Please note that all protocols can be adjusted as state and federal guidelines change.

CLASSROOMS Classes will operate at a reduced capacity based on DCFS guidelines. The children will remain in a stable “pod” and will not be interchanged or mixed.

PPE All staff and children will be required to wear facial coverings. Staff may utilize a shield in lieu of a mask during expressive activities such as story time. Children may remove their masks during snack time and when able to physically distance while outside.

HEALTH SCREENINGS All preschool participants and staff must register a temperature under 100.4, without fever-reducing medicine, when they arrive. Temperatures will be taken using a no touch thermometer. Families will complete a health screening daily attesting to the health of and lack of exposure to COVID-19 for their children before entrance to the preschool is granted. Any person with a fever or a failed health screening will not be allowed to enter the classrooms.

CLEANING PROTOCOLS Common areas of the preschool are cleaned hourly. High touch areas in the classroom will be regularly disinfected. Shared toys and other manipulatives will be cleaned after use. Each child will have their own supply box to reduce shared materials.

The fund is used for people who are in serious financial need, to participate in park district programs. The Board of Park Commissioners has a policy that no person will be denied access to recreation programs or facilities because of an inability to pay fees. Please know that the program is strictly confidential and is closely monitored by the Director of Recreation. We appreciate your support.

REFUNDS FOR RECREATION PROGRAMS

A recreation program is defined as a program in which park district personnel teach activities or skills over a period of two or more class meetings. Sports leagues, camps, preschool, After School Club, trips, Sarah Hall Theatre, virtual sewing classes, special events, season passes and one-day classes and workshops are considered special refund categories. • A refund may be obtained two (2) business days prior to the first day of class/program. A 10 percent service charge ($5 minimum; $10 maximum) will be deducted from the amount paid for the program(s). • Once a program or class begins, and prior to it ending, you may request a prorated refund based on the number of classes attended and the date the refund request is received. A 10 percent service charge ($5 minimum; $10 maximum) will be assessed. • If a class is rescheduled, relocated, or changed by the park district, a total refund will be made if requested by the participant. • Refunds will be offered if a class is canceled or closed by the park district. • If a participant is dropped from a program at the request and discretion of the district staff, a refund will be made, less prorated cost of classes held. • In lieu of a refund, participants may transfer money to other currently offered activities. The amount to be transferred (refunded) will be prorated based on the number of classes that have already been held.

GENERAL INFORMATION MISSION STATEMENT

To provide outstanding parks, services, facilities and recreation programs that enrich lives, promote healthy living and inspire memorable experiences.

PARK DISTRICT PHILOSOPHY

The Park Board recognizes the need to provide and maintain sufficient and attractive parks, open space, recreation facilities and programs to serve equitably, and without prejudice, all the people of the Park District in the provision of leisure time activities. Every opportunity shall be afforded, within financial limits, to plan, procure, develop and maintain park and recreation resources, and to provide leadership for the wholesome and constructive use of leisure time. The provisions of quality recreational services in the most efficient manner, at the least possible cost, and without significantly duplicating the efforts of other agencies, will be emphasized at all times. This includes the development of cooperative agreements with other agencies directly and indirectly involved with leisure services in the District. The provision of recreation, park and conservation services must be considered as a positive opportunity for people of the District to share with each other, to develop leadership capacities, to learn skills for present and future enjoyment, and to emphasize responsibilities to each other as well as to the community.

BE A GOOD NEIGHBOR

Please respect the rights and property of neighbors of our parks. Use public sidewalks/pathways. Drive carefully in lots, driveways and nearby streets. Trees, bushes, fences, etc., should not be used as bathrooms. Keep your dog on a leash, remain on public property, clean up pet waste, and place trash in park receptacles. To report vandalism, call 847-945-8636.

THORGUARD

GENERAL INFORMATION

ThorGuard Lightning Prediction Systems are installed at all parks, pools and schools in Deerfield, from April through November. Horns are tested the first Tuesday of each of these months, at 10 AM. Should you hear the horn or see the strobe light at other times—or any time lightning seems possible—be sure to seek shelter. The system is meant to warn the public that conditions are right for possible lightning danger. This system is not 100 percent accurate, as it operates on radio waves which are variable. As not every unit will go off simultaneously, the public is asked to please use common sense when conditions appear threatening, even if ThorGuard warnings are not heard or seen.

FOOD ALLERGIES, MEDICATION, ILLNESS

Infectious Diseases: To prevent the spread of communicable diseases, such as strep, pink eye and fifth’s disease, parents should report any diagnosed cases to the Park District office. If exposure to other participants occurred, a notification is sent home. Food Allergies: Many of our preschool, as well as cooking and other classes, will serve food; therefore, it is imperative that you notify the full-time Recreation Supervisor of any food allergies or dietary restrictions your child may have. Medication: If your child requires medication (inhaler, epi-pen, etc.) during class, medication administration forms must be completed. Please call our registration office (847-945-0650) for details.

Follow these warnings for safety: • One prolonged horn blast signifies a strong lightning risk. • The strobe light signals a continuing lightning alert condition. • Three short horn blasts (and ceasing of Illness: Please do not attend class nor strobe light illumination) signal it may send children who are ill to class. be safe to return to the area, but use discretion.
