The contact between the Orient and the Occident that took place in Spain over the course of eight centuries (711–1492) had a cultural and linguistic impact that stretches into the present day. This is why, after Latin, Arabic has had the biggest influence on Spanish vocabulary. This study aims to describe this influence, defined as a cultural adstrate, on different linguistic levels by taking into account the underlying structures.

While much scholarly attention has already been paid to some of the various phenomena of affectionate language – for example pet names and diminutive constructions – the same cannot yet be claimed for affectionate language as such. The author of this volume is the first to present a theory of affectionate modes of speaking, grounding it empirically using a corpus study of Chilean Spanish.

Este estudio analiza las estrategias de construcción discursiva que estructuraron el esquema cognitivo de identidad nacional mexicana en cuatro generaciones de libros escolares (1960–2009). Incorporando herramientas de la Lingüística Cognitiva y de los Estudios Críticos del Discurso, el análisis socio-cognitivo es completado por una parte empírica de enfoque socio-interaccional que se basa en el marco teórico y metodológico de las Narrativas.

This study analyzes the discursive construction strategies that structured the cognitive model of Mexican national identity in four generations of textbooks (1960–2009). Using tools from the fields of Cognitive Linguistics and Critical Discourse Studies, the sociocognitive analysis is completed by a socialinteractional empirical study drawing on the theoretical and methodological framework of Narrative Studies.

This study investigates the mechanisms and causes of successful and unsuccessful acquisition of gender in Spanish by early and late bilinguals of different language combinations (German-Spanish vs. English-Spanish). The results show differences in the mastery of gender in Spanish among the bilingual groups which are mainly driven by the language combination and an interplay between various other extra- and intra-linguistic factors.

Die Studie untersucht die argumentstrukturellen Eigenschaften von medialen Kommunikationsverben. Das sind Verben, die sich auf Situationen beziehen, in denen die Kommunikation mithilfe eines technologischen Mediums erfolgt. Im Mittelpunkt steht die Frage, ob bzw. inwiefern sich neue, aus dem Englischen entlehnte mediale Kommunikationsverben an die Argumentstrukturen bedeutungsverwandter Verben des Deutschen resp. des Spanischen anpassen.

This study examines the structural argument properties of media communication verbs. These are verbs that relate to situations in which communication takes place by means of a technological medium. The focus is on the question of whether/ to which extent new media communication verbs adopted from English have adapted to the argument structures of semantically related verbs in German and Spanish respectively.

Spanische nominalisierte Infinitive unterliegen einer Vielzahl von bisher eher fragmentarisch untersuchten syntaktisch-semantischen Beschränkungen. Basierend auf einer Klassifikation von Formtypen untersucht diese Studie nominalisierte Infinitive im Hinblick auf ihre Kompatibilität mit Verben unterschiedlicher Verbklassen, Argumentrealisierung und semantische Lesarten. Kontrolliert erhobene Akzeptabilitätsurteile bilden die empirische Basis.

Nominalised Spanish infinitives are subject to a multitude of syntactic-semantic limitations that have only been studied fragmentarily so far. Based on a classification of form types, this study examines nominalised infinitives in terms of argument realisation, semantic interpretations and their compatibility with verbs from different verb classes. The empirical basis is formed by acceptability judgments collected in a controlled atmosphere.

Discursive traditions are a key concept in historical pragmatics, which investigates linguistic history as cultural history. This volume focuses on traditions in Old Spanish texts providing instruction on the the forming of questions and answers in conversation. This volume uses linguistic and philological studies to develop a model of (historical) pragmatics that systematizes the universal principles and traditions of speaking in interactions.
