A popular clothing store has closed its doors for good after nearly three decades serving customers in the heart of Ladner Village.

It was back in late November when the McKnight family announced South Coast Casuals would be winding down their business after 28 years. It happened to coincide with Tracey and Bill celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary and looking forward to retirement while their daughter Jill is now the executive director of the Delta Chamber of Commerce

The past four months have seen a steady flow of loyal and casual customers dropping by to not only check out the clearance inventory, but also offer their best wishes to the

family and staff members

A memory book was made available for customers to sign and write about their favourite store memories. Even just hours before the doors closed for good last Friday (March 31), customers were still coming in to say good-bye

The store’s long successful run included expanding after five years when the adjacent hair salon vacated and an extensive renovation followed to create double the floor space.

“There is mixed emotions, but it’s come together the way we had hoped it would where we gave lots of notice, to our community, to our staff, to everyone so that it wasn’t going to be too much of a shock,” said Tracey. “We’ve enjoyed being in the community so much and working hard within the com-

munity, as things have progressed and changed over the many years.

“We’ve gone from having narrowed sidewalks to stamped ones with many new trees being put in There’s just been so many positives. One of the reasons we located on a street front location was to be in a village and to have that interaction with people as they’re just out for their daily walks”

The McKnights’ contributions in the community go well beyond operating their store, including leading many successful events, none more so than the Ladner Village Market each summer Although their retirement plans include travelling and more time with their grandchildren, they will still be actively involved with the market that is entering its 27th year in June

The City of Delta’s Street FUN-iture Program will be back again this summer with a few changes.

Two years ago, during the pandemic, the city started its pop-up parks in business districts and outdoor reading rooms outside Delta’s libraries

In 2022, pop-up parks were located at Bridge Street and the Elliott Street Wharf/Chisholm Street Wharf in Ladner, Sunstone Village and Sungod Recreation Centre in North Delta and Bayside Village in Tsawwassen. The popup parks were equipped with a variety of urban play infrastructure and furnished with a variety of seating

The majority of feedback received about the program to date is “very positive” as residents of all ages and abilities enjoyed having a place to

visit, hangout and play, a report to council notes.

However, the city received two concerns from Ladner businesses last summer regarding the lack of curbside parking on Bridge Street.

As a result, a few changes have been made for 2023.

The FUN-iture Program will comprise four pop-up parks: an “Outdoor Arcade” at the Chisolm Street/ Seven Seas Wharf, a “Music Room” at the Elliott Street Wharf featuring a piano, a “Games Room” at Sungod Recreation Centre and a “Rec Room” at Tsawwassen Town Centre Mall.

There will also be outdoor reading rooms at the Tsawwassen and George Mackie libraries, but not at Ladner Pioneer Library due to its close proximity to Memorial Park, which the parks and recreation department notes is already activated with play infra-

structure and seating.

The pop-up parks will include a variety of games including mini golf, bocce, foosball, ping pong, ladder golf, cornhole, Kan-Jam, Spikeball, Connect4 and Jenga.

The accessible parks will also be furnished with Adirondack chairs, picnic tables with umbrellas, moveable patio tables and chairs and outdoor patio lighting on timers.

All pop-up parks and outdoor reading rooms will be situated on concrete and will be overlaid with recycled synthetic turf to transform the spaces

The report also notes that, in response to feedback received by the public last year, staff will upgrade lighting at the two Ladner pop-up parks to enhance the outdoor spaces and improve safety and visibility, while the piano will be installed on a trial basis this summer

The report also notes

that the city will reuse most of the urban play equipment, furniture, and materials from the 2022 program The estimated cost to purchase new equipment, install, operate and program

the pop-up parks for the 2023 Street FUN-iture Program is $90,000.

The estimated cost to enhance the lighting is $30,000.

The Street FUN-iture is expected to be installed

in the late spring or early summer, subject to equipment availability, negotiations with relevant private property owners and adjustments necessitated by a consultation process

Mayor George Harvie enjoys a game of ping pong with Coun. Dylan Kruger at a pop-up park on Bridge Street in Ladner Village. That park will be relocated this summer following complaints about parking on the street last year.

Delta council has voted in favour of giving themselves a pay raise, their first renumeration adjustment in four years

The mayor ’ s base salary is to increase from $154,264 to $175,264 (13.6 percent), while councillor salaries are to each increase from $62,788 to $74,399 (18.4 percent).

A staff report explained that the city sets remuneration rates based on a comparison to Coquitlam, Richmond, Township of Langley and the District of North Vancouver, four Metro Vancouver municipalities with similar populations or localized issues.

A review found that the remuneration had

fallen below the average of the comparators.

Subsequent to adoption, the mayor and councillors will receive a one-time payment based on the differential between the current and pre-existing remuneration to Nov. 7, 2022.

The report from staff once again brought up the fact Delta is the largest municipality in the province that continues to employ a mayor and six councillors It’s normal practice for municipalities with populations over 50,000 is to have eight councillors.

“The reduced number of councillors has a resultant reduction in salary costs however it also results in an increased workload amongst council members.

Remuneration levels should adequately compensate council members for the significant personal time and dedication required to serve in these roles,” the report notes

“The Union of BC Municipalities (UBCM) reinforced that the offsetting of changes to base remuneration levels that protect council from financial loss is reasonable and that remuneration levels left static in the face of changing circumstances, including shifts in cost-of-living, risk becoming barriers to participation.”

Council also endorsed a leave procedure policy that allows for leaves for maternity and/or parental as well as compassionate/caregiver absences.

Beach closed to public, except over Easter weekend

SANDOR GYARMATI

sgyarmati@delta-optimist

Metro Vancouver has begun work to repair damage during winter storms and extremely high tides at Centennial Beach and the trails at Boundary Bay Regional Park.

Trails will remain open but visitors should expect to encounter construction crews and equipment, according to Metro Vancouver.

Meanwhile, debris cleanup will require Centennial Beach to be closed to the public from now until April 14, excluding the Easter long weekend from April 8 to 10.

A Metro staff report

to the Regional Parks Committee earlier this year noted that between Dec 27 to 29, 2022, Boundary Bay Regional Park experienced a storm surge several feet high due to a king tide combined with prevailing winds from the southeast.

The storm surge breached the dike trail in the lagoon area and flooded the main day use area. The flooding carried logs, woody debris and sand about up to 200 metres inland.

An emergency repair of the dike breach was conducted by the City of Delta, while regional parks staff initiated a log cleanup in an area of the main beach to accom-

modate Delta’s January 1 Community Polar Bear Swim.

The report noted most trails are passable again, but some will require additional repairs to restore them to their original condition.

The report also noted that on Dec. 27, 2022, the king tide topped the berms at Deas Island Regional Park, flooding part of the central island and washing out trails in multiple spots on both the slough and river side

The increased frequency of winter storms and king tide events are impacts of ongoing climate change that will continue to challenge regional parks into the future, the report added

Backyard chicken program is popular with residents

SANDOR GYARMATI

The City of Delta’s backyard chicken program has gone well with few complaints.

That’s according to the community planning and development department on the program that was initially approved by council as a pilot project in 2021

There are now 39 residential lots that have active licenses to keep backyard chickens and the city had received few complaints since the program was started, said director Marcy Sangret, adding they are not proposing any bylaw amendments or modifications to the program at this time.

“Delta residents interested in obtaining licenses are provided with important resources, including Delta’s Backyard Chickens brochure and bylaw regulations, along with provincially and federally produced documentation to aid in the understanding of the health and welfare needs of chickens,” Sangret told the Optimist

Residents are reminded that an application must be approved by the city and that a BC Premises ID is also required

The bylaw amendment removed a previous requirement of properties having chickens being located next to agriculturally-zoned

properties.

Roosters are prohibited, while the number of hens permitted on a property is restricted to a minimum of two to a maximum of four.

Hens are required to be licensed to assist with tracking of birds during any disease outbreaks

The bylaw also requires food and manure to be removed to reduce smell and pest impacts

Coops and runs are limited to a maximum of 108-square-feet of combined indoor and outdoor space.

Chickens are also to be kept for personal use and shall not be kept for the purposes of selling meat, eggs or other products.

LadnerVillage redevelopment proposalredesigned

Council is tentatively scheduled to consider preliminary approval on April 17

SANDOR GYARMATI

sgyarmati@delta-optimist com

Delta council at its Committee of the Whole meeting on Tuesday discussed revisions to the application for a sixstorey mixed-use development at the corner of Bridge and Elliott streets in Ladner Village.

Revised to reflect the new Ladner Village Core (LVC) Development Permit Area guidelines, the design changes for the redevelopment plan of the Dunbar Lumber site includes a reduction in the number of residential units from 129 to 128, using step backs more strategically on the corners to reduce perceived massing against existing buildings and using a lighter colour palette across the building to create a cohesive design.

According to the pro-

ponent, the top of the building was redesigned to appear “for a more subtle expression.”

McGregor Wark, vicepresident of Headwater Projects, said they spent a great deal of time meeting with residents to discuss the application, including meeting the group Friends of Ladner Village to address concerns raised in their petition in opposition.

Council is tentatively scheduled to consider preliminary approval on April 17

Saying she appreciates the proponent working with residents, Coun Alicia Guichon said she still believes the height and massing are too much for the site.

Coun Rod Binder said that while the building is still proposed to be six-storeys, the revised design does make it appear more like it is

four

storeys

Because the rezoning application fits within the new Official Community Plan for Ladner Village, a public hearing is not required, but Friends of Ladner Village is demanding that a public hearing be held

The group is also not impressed with the revised design

“Unfortunately, we are very disappointed with the minor changes made to the original proposal,” said spokesperson Bev Yaworski in a news release. “We were initially encouraged and hopeful when the developer decided to take time to evaluate community response to their proposal, but, these new revisions don’t go far enough to satisfy the many serious concerns Delta residents have about this proposal.”

OPINION

After nearly three decades, they have served their last customer.

Friday, March 31 marked the last day of operation for South Coast Casuals – an institution in the heart of Ladner Village for the past 28 years

Thankyou McKnight`s M

Last November, Tracey and Bill McKnight along with their daughter Jill, made the announcement that they were closing the store paving the way for Tracey and Bill to begin a long-deserved retirement, and allowing Jill to focus fully on her role as executive director of the Delta Chamber of Commerce I have had the pleasure of getting to know the McKnight’s on a personal level as well as business leaders in our community the past six years. In fact, one of my first interviews here at the Optimist when I joined the editorial department in the summer of 2016 was Jill in her capacity as president of the Ladner Business Association Her warm and welcoming demeanor and willingness to promote the LBA and its member businesses told me right away what a special person she is I soon was introduced to her parents Tracey and Bill and those same feelings were apparent in our first of what has been many meaningful and pleasant interactions over the past six years.

The McKnight’s represent all that is good about not only our business community, but our community in general. They have worked hard to not only run a successful business, employing many for years, but have championed for other businesses in the Village, promoted events, volunteered to ensure events could be enjoyed by our community –including the popular Ladner Village Market in June, which they will still oversee.

The doors of South Coast Casuals are now closed, but the McKnight’s heart and soul for the love of our community will always be open and for that, we thank you

The great garage clean-out is almost here

y wife calls me a hoarder I call it being prepared for anything

I have a garage full of tools, toys and general stuff that I use on a regular basis. Guaranteed, as soon as I throw something out, a day later I’m headed to the hardware store to buy a replacement for it, because after all these years, I can finally use it

I consider myself a bit of a MacGyver – I can fix almost anything with a few tools, duct tape, bailing wire and a lot of determination. I like the challenge of keeping things useful, I like working on cars and building things. I have a large woodpile that is used more by the local raccoons than my construction products (That will be taken care of this spring, for sure!)

That’s why Spring Cleanup is a celebration in our

household My wife revels in taking all my stuff to the curb, and I revel in bringing it all back into my garage But at least this time, it’s more organized. My wife was horrified when I came home with a lawn mower one year. But a couple hours (and a few choice words) later, it was running and mowing the lawn It lasted a few years until the casing rotted away. Off to the curb with you, the metal collector’s next pick

I have to admit, there are a few things I’ve left out that I didn’t really want to get rid of, but when they were gone I had a sense of relief. Even better is when we put something out and we see it get picked up by someone who could really use it.

When my son was very young, we found a rideon backhoe. He loved that thing for years I used all my MacGyvering creativity to keep it working. Finally, when he outgrew it, we put it out for Spring Clean-up. We saw a family driving around, stopped and picked it up for a very excited young boy. I hope he enjoyed it as much as my son did, until it either fell apart, or he passed it on to the next construction protégé

Who knows what will be lining the streets next weekend All I know is I’m not allowed to pick anything. At least until my garage has a bit of room in it

Editor:

Unfortunately the attitudes expressed by Ms. Abbott (Community Comment, Optimist, March 23) is the way society looks at theft today, and that is the first step in a long journey downhill for honest citizens

The two teenagers stealing cupcakes at Thrifty’s was not done because they were poor, hungry or disenfranchised, it was done because they were allowed to do it, because there are no consequences and if there

was, Dad’s lawyer would get them off

The grown man who stole a steak at another food store, was he hungry? Why didn’t he steal some baloney and a Kraft dinner? Why didn’t he go to the food bank? If he was a veteran down on his luck why didn’t he go to the Legion and see what they would do for him? No he just decided to steal a steak because he was allowed to do it, and knew there would be no consequences.

In both these cases the cost of food goes up for you and me because

society now accepts this activity, as long as honest people are there to pay for all damage done by the thieves

My law would be shoplifters witnessed by two people would be charged outside of our over complicated justice system, and be forced to sweep or shovel the sidewalks in town in a pink jumpsuit with writing on the back in big black letters: I am a shoplifter, a common criminal.”

Can we at least have public shaming?

Actions should have consequences

Editor:

I was forwarded Ingrid Abbott’s column (Optimist, March 23) as I now live in Victoria, but I keep in touch with the goings on and with my friends.

I was put in mind of the many trips taken by my husband and me by

our boat, to the charming small town of Coupeville, Wash.

After several trips, my husband and I happened by chance upon a sheriff’s deputy and asked why there was no vandalism and no graffiti and the sheriff’s didn’t

Flight path changes good news for Delta, says NAV Canada

It’s a great news story for Delta

That’s according to Frederic Gagnon, Operations Manager for NAV CANADA, during a presentation to city council on March 27, providing an update on proposed new flight paths and landing approach procedures for aircraft arriving at Vancouver International Airport (YVR).

The Vancouver Airspace Modernization Project (VAMP), initiated in 2018, will see changes to aircraft flight movements over residential neighbourhoods in the Lower Mainland.

The goal of the review is to prepare for projected future aircraft movement growth, balancing the needs of stakeholders while sustaining improved safety, he said.

In collaboration with the Vancouver Airport Authority, NAV CANADA’s airspace review’s focus included mitigating aircraft noise impacts over Delta by shifting aircraft approaches away from more populated areas

A member of the YVR Aeronautical Noise Management Committee, the City of Delta requested during NAV CANADA’s stakeholder input, that aircraft routing be shifted to areas such as oceans, highways and industrial and commercial areas.

No changes are proposed for departure routes or aircraft operating under visual flight rule, however Gagnon said scattering the departure noise is considered better for communities, as opposed to penalizing certain neighbourhoods.

“Unfortunately, we’re not changing that 3 a.m departure that’s going to go over the Pacific. This project was designed more on the approach phase with less focus on the departure phase That doesn’t mean in the future we won’t be looking at departures. We actually made a conscious decision not to touch departures because we had the opportunity to implement that same sort of very precise departures, but we felt, along with our partners at YVR, that departures are the big-

gest noise generator,” he explained.

“If you implement very strict departure gates, that means that point with the most noise, you’re sending the planes over a single point every time, which means the people living under that single point will eat all of that noise, versus today where the departure routes are very scattered.”

Noting the changes will also see more utilization of GPS and other navigation services, Gagnon said one of the highlights in the noise reduction plan is use of continuous descent procedures

Gagnon said a report detailing NAV CANADA’s recent public consultations is now being prepared. Some adjustments may be implemented to address public feedback. The changes would be implemented by late fall or early winter.

SANDOR GYARMATI

The City of Delta has not formally adopted a “15-minute city” plan but that doesn’t mean aspects are not already part of the city’s ongoing initiatives.

That was the staff response to a recent letter to council from a resident opposed to the idea of Delta adopting such a policy, a form of urban planning aimed at having residents being able to walk or bike to work or access groceries, healthcare, education and other services in an approximately 15-minute walk or bike ride.

While the concept has

been talked about for a few years, Delta has not adopted the policy as part of its community development and planning

However, there are many aspects in Delta’s Official Community Plan, Community Energy Emissions Plan, Cycling Master Plan, among other plans and policy documents, that support compact and complete communities along with improving cycling and walking infrastructure, the staff memo explains.

Staff are also working on an update to the energy and emissions plan which included public consultation and surveys to get the public’s views on reducing community-

wide GHG emissions, staff added

The Climate Action and Community Livability Advisory Committee in 2021 discussed the concept during its review of the city’s plan at the time to update Delta’s plan.

A recent Research Co and Glacier Media survey asking Canadians about the “15-minute city” found that only 33 per cent of the country’s residents say they had heard of the concept. When Canadians were asked if they support or oppose the “15-minute city,” 63 per cent were in favour, while 16 per cent were against it and 22 per cent were undecided.

Accessibility planningunderway

SANDOR GYARMATI

The City of Delta is formulating a new accessibility plan.

A requirement by the Accessible British Columbia Act, which became law in June 2021, local governments are required to have an accessibility committee, accessibility plan as well as a public feedback tool in place by Sept 1, 2023.

The city, which has been undertaking a number of measures, already has a Mobility and Accessibility Committee, which first met in 2021.

The advisory committee reviewed a draft city

plan a few weeks ago.

According to the report, the plan focuses on action that address the principles in the Accessible British Columbia Act of inclusion, adaptability, diversity, collaboration, self-determination and universal design. The actions are organized in key focus areas informed by research and input from Delta’s committee

Among the principals addressing the built environment to prevent and remove barriers including transportation infrastructure, public facilities and public spaces.

The built environment also includes developments and designs

where the committee has already provided input

The plan also has actions in the areas of governance and services, leadership and collaboration, as well as diversity and inclusion.

The City of Delta’s Accessibility Plan is to be reviewed and updated at least once every three years in accordance with the Accessibility Act.

The city’s latest Social Action Plan, recently approved by council, states Delta should try to enhance physical accessibility through the built environment and support social inclusion through the elimination of barriers for people with different abilities.

Tsawwassenresidents opposesubdivision

The City of Delta recently received a 90-name petition opposed to a proposed subdivision of a Tsawwassen residential property.

The city is currently reviewing an application to subdivide the property at 5000 Cliff Dr into two lots with each having a new single-detached dwelling with a secondary suite, attached garage and in-ground basement on each lot

Noting a report is forthcoming, a staff response to council explained that the petition has been acknowledged and will form part

of the ongoing rezoning and subdivision application review and consultation summary

The petition lists several concerns including the new lots being “substantially narrower ” than any of the existing lots, creating a “cramped look.”

The petition also states the “proposed houses do not respect the look and feel of the neighbourhood”

Currently having a house and swimming pool, the 27,893-square foot lot is listed for sale at $2.9 million. The listing notes that the property is in the process of an application for a subdivision for two flat, rectangular building lots at approximately 14,000 square-feet each

Meanwhile, elsewhere in Tsawwassen, a 9A Avenue resident recently wrote to council conveying opposition to another subdivision application, saying that proposal is not suitable for the neighbhourhood

The application is for a single-family property at 5638 9A Ave , which would see a subdivision of the one lot into two lots where two houses with secondary suites would be built

In response to the letter, the planning department provided an update that staff would meet with the applicant to discuss potential refinements to the proposal to address comments and report back to council

City seeking youth to join advisory group

GYARMATI

The City of Delta wants to set up a new youth hub.

The Delta Children and Youth Committee is currently looking for 10 youth to join a Youth Advisory Group to support developing a model for the youth hub in Delta.

The committee, a group of non-profit, government and community agencies and organizations that work to improve the lives of children, youth and families, has extended the deadline for applications to April 10, 2023

The idea of a youth hub came from the city’s latest Social Action Plan, recently approved by council

The plan, which identifies youth and other social needs, contains a series of recommended actions, a culmination of research findings and feedback from community groups and Delta residents.

A previous report noted a survey found close to 30 per cent of children and youth said they wish they could do more activities

Among the findings during consultations was youth wanting more fun outdoor public spaces, opportuni-

ties for youth to learn life skills, recreational/ sports activities, indoor spaces to get together and free counselling services.

The recommended actions include collaborating with committee members to identify possible sites, partners and operational and funding models to open a youth hub or a youthcentric services centre in Delta, developing a more holistic approach to address youth needs

For more information on the advisory group or make an application, check www.deltasd. bc ca/news-events/ news/youth-advisorygroup

concernaboutcallwaittimes

SANDOR GYARMATI

sgyarmati@delta-optimist com

A number of significant changes are being made to help improve non-emergency call wait-times for Delta.

That was the recent response from E-Comm to Delta Mayor George Harvie, who raised serious concerns to the provincial government about E-Comm’s service

In late December, Harvie, on behalf of the Delta Police Board which he also chairs, wrote to Public Safety and Solicitor General and Deputy Premier Mike Farnworth conveying concerns about what he described as E-Comm’s inability to provide necessary calltaking services for the Delta Police Department

His letter, which was also sent to Doug Campbell, Board Chair, Emergency Communications for British Columbia Incorp , notes that there have been consistent and ongoing challenges relating to unacceptably long wait times for emergency and non-emergency calls, often leading to abandoned calls.

In a letter to Harvie in response, Campbell acknowledged service levels on non-emergency calls have been ‘unacceptable’ due to an increase in call volumes and labour shortages, however, E-Comm’s performance in 911 call taking remains ‘ very strong’ .

Campbell highlighted 2022 year-end regional service results indicating the Lower Mainland E-Comm’s service levels were above the target of answering 95 per cent of 911 calls within five

seconds (97.7 per cent), and for police emergency call taking was near the target of answering 88 per cent of police emergency calls within 10 seconds (84.6 per cent)

“Your letter refers to ‘consistent and ongoing challenges relating to unacceptably long wait times for emergency and non-emergency calls, often leading to abandoned calls.’ I would respectfully submit that the service impacts that E-Comm has experienced on wait time and call abandon rates are almost entirely with non-emergency calls only,” wrote Campbell

Also providing 2022 year-end service level results for the Delta Police Department, Campbell notes the service level for police emergency calls improved in 2022 to 84 per cent of calls answered within 10 seconds, from 81 per cent in 2021. The service level rises to 88 per cent of emergency calls answered within 20 seconds, and 91 per cent within 30 seconds.

Also noting a 911 call taker remains on the phone at all times with callers waiting to be transferred to a police call taker, Campbell provided other Delta numbers including the service level for non-emergency calls (NER) decreasing in 2022 to 68 per cent of calls answered within three minutes or less, below the target of 80 per cent.

That service level rises to 80 per cent of non-emergency calls answered within five minutes, and 91 per cent answered within 10 minutes. The non-emergency call abandon rate deteriorated to 41 per cent, from 19 per cent in 2021.

SANDOR GYARMATI

Seniors figure prominently in the City of Delta’s new Social Action Plan.

Endorsed by council earlier this month, it’s an update from Delta’s previous plan from 2018 and covers 2023 to 2028, a culmination of research findings and feedback from community groups and Delta residents.

Containing a series of

recommendations and actions, the plan covers several social areas including seniors, with 22 actions to improve their sense of belonging and connections in Delta, to support seniors to age in place and live active lives, as well as enhance community capacity to support vulnerable seniors.

“Delta’s seniors’ population continues to grow. Many seniors report that they are living indepen-

dently, but feel isolated and not connected to any community agency or seniors centre. They would like to have more of a voice in decisions that affect their lives,” a report to council notes “There is also an urgent need for more affordable and accessible housing for seniors, and better transportation options for them to access services in Delta and surrounding areas ”

The city late last year received a $25,000 grant from the BC Healthy Communities: AgeFriendly Community Grants Program to undertake an assessment of the seniors’ demographic in Delta and develop an age-friendly strategy/ action plan

The grant was delivered by BCHC in partnership with the BC Ministry of Health.

Grants are offered in

two funding streams with a first phase involving planning, while a second phase involves projects.

“With Delta’s growing seniors’ population, it is important to identify ways to ensure people can continue living independent, active lives, being involved in the community, and having a voice and access to the resources they need,” a previous report noted.

City staff will be working this year with a planning consultant with specific expertise in the

field to consult with community members and service providers. They will develop a Deltaspecific plan with practical actions for creating a more age-friendly community, the report adds

The next step would be to apply for funding for phase two, towards implementing the actions identified

Burnett is happy to be home, so happy in fact, that she’s going back to where it all started.

Burnett, past-principal dancer of the 10-year-old, New York City-based modern dance company, Alison Cook Beatty Dance, will perform in a solo show entitled B.C. to NYC – a Dance Journey on Monday, April 10 at 2 p.m. at the Deas Island Dance Centre (320-4949 Canoe Pass Way). The show will be followed by a masterclass and question and answer session.

Registration is via email: nycdancejourney@yahoo.com.

Participation in the masterclass is $15 per dancer and the per-

formance is free of charge.

Burnett was born and raised in Tsawwassen and has since taken her professional dance career to the Big Apple. She performed as a soloist dancer in Martha Graham’s second company, Graham 2 She was and is engaged to be the feature dancer in House of Spirits, an America-wide Halloween performance production, which has touched more than 50,000 audience members so far. She also performed as a principal dancer with Alison Cook Beatty Dance, whose repertory she will be performing and teaching at this event.

“I am thrilled to be back in my home dance community of Tsawwassen after several packed seasons of performing

on New York stages and touring around the surrounding states of the eastern USA, post the pandemic lockdown,” she said. “Bringing my professional experiences abroad back to the place that dance started for me, Deas Island Dance, is very close to my heart and I look forward to sharing my journey so far with aspiring dancers.

“I will be performing repertory by Alison Cook Beatty Dance, the dance company that did not let the pandemic stop it and which instead caught major media attention for its prolific pandemic relief efforts, and with which I have performed soloist roles. In honour of Cancer Awareness month, the performance will include a solo dedicated to cancer patients.”

Drama and musical theatre teacher Alicia Tobin said putting on

such a classic show this year has been such a rewarding opportunity.

“This is my second

year at DSS, and I’ve been so blown away with the talent and dedication showcased by these out-

standing performers,” said Tobin “We’ve been working on this show since September, with about 75 cast and crew members combined The students are just buzzing with excitement to have the opportunity to perform this show for an audience. We’ve had such a strong and supportive cast this year who are always willing to lend a hand wherever needed”

“While directing this show, I’ve found there

Many people will attend an Easter service this Sunday. Billions of people across the world believe that Jesus died to pay the price for our sins and was raised to life to defeat death and usher in a kingdom where we can eternally live in peace with God.

I believe this to be true, but I have friends who disagree. They see the Easter story as a myth. One reason why they can’t accept this as truth is because of the miracle of the resurrection Trained by the scientific and secular age in which we live, some believe the supernatural cannot exist in our reality. However, it becomes difficult (or even impossible) to discuss our origin story without the possibility of the supernatural.

Where do we come from?

Some say God created us. Some say Evolution Theory explains it Some look to the Big Bang Theory for an answer. If you subscribe to the Evolution Theory, it still doesn’t answer the question of the origin of all existence. Where did the

first ape come from? If Big Bang (or the multiverse theory) is your way to explain it, where did the single point that expanded into the current universe come from? Nothing cannot become something At some point, it’s much easier to accept the possibility of the supernatural to explain how we came to be

If we ’ re a product of an origin story of apes and accidental matter, our lives are meaningless, and we’ll struggle to find true purpose But if the bible is true, and God created us and he died for us and rose to life to show us a better way forward, this much is true God loves you and your life has tremendous purpose. Check out an Easter service near you.

Tips to pick the right plants for your landscape

Each year, gardening enthusiasts anxiously await the arrival of spring Spring is a great season to plant new flowers, plants, grasses, and trees, making it a popular time of year to spend sunny days out in the yard.

Veteran gardeners may know their landscapes well and be able to pick the right plants on their own Novices may need a little help as they look to give their landscapes a whole new look. The following are some helpful tips to help homeowners pick the right plants for their landscapes.

*Conduct a site evaluation: A colourful landscape featur-

ing an array of plants and flowers can be eye-catching and add curb appeal to a property However, where plants will be planted is a significant variable that must be considered before homeowners choose what to plant. Take note of the area you plan to plant to see if it is full sun or partial shade, and then pick plants whose growing conditions align with those you observe.

*Look at more than looks: Aesthetic appeal might be what homeowners most desire from their landscapes, but that appeal is only achieved when the right plants are chosen for a space If the wrong

plants are chosen, they’re unlikely to thrive or they could threaten existing vegetation, thus compromising the overall appeal of the property. Native plants can often handle local weather conditions, so prioritize natives over more exotic plants whose key attribute is aesthetic appeal. If jaw-dropping aesthetic appeal is your top priority, speak with a local landscaping professional about which natives can provide that without compromising surrounding vegetation.

*Consider maintenance prior to planting: Maintenance is another variable gardeners must consider Newly planted

trees may require substantial watering until they’ve fully established their roots, and some homeowners may not have time for that.

In addition, certain plants may require a considerable amount of pruning in order to create and maintain the look homeowners’ desire. Individuals must be willing to invest the time and effort necessary to maintain new plantings that require such diligence. If not, look for plants that don’t require much maintenance while keeping in mind that even low-maintenance plants still require some effort and attention

*Consider local wildlife: If your lawn is routinely visited by local wildlife, then look for plants that won’t look like a meal to these welcome, if uninvited, guests For example, if you routinely see deer lounging around in your backyard, look for deer-resistant plants This is a good way to protect your investment, of both time and money, and ensure minimal wildlife traffic through your newly landscaped yard Spring gardens are aweinspiring, especially when homeowners embrace various strategies for successful planting

The basics of fertilizing a lawn

Spring marks the return of lawn and garden season Lawns often bear the brunt of winter’s wrath, so spring is a great time to nurse them back to health, and fertilizing can be an essential component of that process.

Fertilizing a lawn can be intimidating. An array of fertilizers, with each seemingly designed to address a different issue, can make homeowners’ heads spin when visiting

their local lawn and garden centre.

However, fertilizing is a very simple task that any homeowner can tackle In fact, fears about fertilizing are often unfounded and can be overcome with some basic knowledge of the process

Identify which type of grass is in the yard: The home improvement experts at HGTV note that turfgrass is divided into two cat-

egories: cool-season grass and warm-season grass A local lawn and garden centre can help homeowners identify which type of grass is in the yard, and this often depends on location.

Fescue, bluegrass and perennial ryegrass are some examples of cool-season grasses, while Bermuda, bahia, St Augustine, and zoysia are considered warm-season grasses. Identifying which type of grass is in the lawn is important because that will indicate when to fertilize. Cool-season grasses are typically best fertilized in early

spring, while warmseason lawns can benefit from an application just before especially warm temperatures arrive.

Survey the lawn to identify which spreader to use: A small yard or a thriving lawn with only a few bald or unsightly patches may not need a full application of fertilizer. In such instances, a hand spreader can suffice. For larger lawns and areas, a broadcast spreader is the ideal option. Spreaders have multiple settings, and the fertilizer package will indicate which setting to utilize when using the product

Test the soil prior to purchasing fertilizer: A simple soil test can reveal soil pH and phosphorous and potassium levels Soil tests can be purchased at most home improvement stores and lawn and garden centers, and they can help homeowners determine which fertilizer will most benefit their lawns.

Water the lawn prior to fertilizing: A good watering a few days prior to fertilizing a lawn is essential. Such an approach ensures the soil is ready to accept the fertilizer once it’s applied

How to create your own native plant garden

Gardening is a worthwhile endeavor that not only passes the time, but can be a form of exercise and relief from the daily grind. Gardens also provide ample opportunity to experiment, as individuals can produce everything from vegetables to bountiful blooms

Recent years have witnessed a growing emphasis on eco-friendly gardening that aims to reduce reliance on chemical fertilizers and pesticides in an effort to protect the planet. One way to do so is to rely on native plants.

What are native plants?

Native plants are indigenous to particular regions. Native plants have formed symbiotic relationships with local wildlife over thousands of years, which makes them the most sustainable options.

Native plants help the environment and thrive with little supplemental watering or chemical nutrients.

Natives vary by region

Native plants vary by region. In arid climates, certain succulents may be native because they don’t need much rainfall to thrive In lush wetlands, succulents might be out of place.

Start native planting

Gardeners can visit local gardening centres to select native plants. Small and independently owned centres often feature knowledgeable local staff whose expertise can prove invaluable to individuals seeking native varieties.

It’s important to keep in mind that native varieties may look less cultivated than more exotic blooms and foliages designed to sell for their unique appearances Wildflowers and native grasses may be the types of native plants found in abundance, which may grow up and out quickly.

These other tips can help the process:

*Plan and prepare the site by removing weeds

and turning over the soil as this will give seedlings an opportunity to take root without competition from weeds. Seedlings will give gardens a faster head-start than waiting around for seeds to germinate. However, gardeners can start seeds indoors and then move them outside once they are seedlings

*Avoid planting native plants in rows, as that’s not how they’re likely to grow naturally. Vary the placement so the plants look like they sprouted up haphazardly.

*Gardeners can still exert some control over native gardens prone to growing a little wild. Borders and paths can better define the growing areas

Native plants should require minimal care. Keep an eye on them and supplement with water if conditions have been especially dry.

Creating more privacy in your yard

An inviting backyard can serve as a welcome retreat from the hustle and bustle of daily life. After a long day at the office or an exhausting day spent transporting kids to and fro, it’s hard to resist the allure of a peaceful outdoor space in which to unwind.

Privacy is a key component of any backyard oasis. Some homes may be so remote that privacy isn’t an issue, but many suburban homeowners recognize they might need to tweak their landscapes if they hope to create a private oasis outside.

Fencing or planting?

Most homeowners looking to create more privacy on their property will have to choose

between fencing and planting Fencing provides immediate privacy because, once it’s installed, no one can see into the yard Fencing also doesn’t require watering or other immediate upkeep, which will be necessary when planting to ensure tree roots can establish themselves But planting has its benefits as well. Planting for privacy is essentially creating a living fence that can grow over time and provide even more privacy as trees reach maturity

Planting

Homeowners who choose to plant for privacy will next have to decide which type of plants to add to their properties

Evergreens provide year-round privacy because they don’t shed their leaves, so these are the ones most often chosen when creating a living fence. A number of varieties of evergreen trees can do the job, but it’s important that homeowners consult with a landscape architect prior to choosing trees so they can ensure the trees will thrive when faced with the growing conditions on their properties.

Whether it’s fencing or planting, homeowners have many options to consider as they seek to create more privacy on their properties.

DELTASPORTS Ice Hawks crowned PJHLchampions

Kyle Robinson scores in overtime of game 7 to send Delta to Revelstoke next week

The Delta Ice Hawks are taking their season to Revelstoke next week after a thrilling game seven victory to capture the Stonehouse Cup.

They are headed to the Cyclone Taylor Cup thanks to a 4-3 overtime win over the Ridge Meadows Flames in front of a capacity crowd at George Preston Arena in Langley on Sunday night

Kyle Robinson banged home a loose puck at the 6:11 mark of overtime after another timely pinch by blueliner Yuji Akimoto to send his team into a frenzy It’s the Hawks’ fifth Pacific Junior Hockey League championship in their 25-year history and none came with more adversity.

A pair of home ice losses to open the best-of-seven affair meant Delta had to win four of the remaining five games against a Ridge Meadows team that was riding a seven-game win streak into the final. The Flames also exploded in the third period for a 7-3 game five victory on Thursday night in Ladner.

The Ice Hawks answered by winning all three games at Cam Neely Arena including a clutch 2-1 game six triumph on Saturday night to set-up the winner take-all-scenario.

“There were some games this year where we just found a way to win,” said Ice Hawks GM and head coach Steve Robinson “We grew comfortable playing in close games and that was important. Even tonight, when they tied the game (at 3-3) there was no panic at the bench. It was more like this is going to take a little longer

“It’s really a shame that either team in a situation like this had to lose tonight I thought the two teams mirrored each other quite well. They had a great season and they were a great opponent You couldn’t ask for a better final.”

After a tough game five outing, Delta goaltender Merik Erickson rebounded with a pair of clutch performances to celebrate his 19th birthday over the weekend.

“It was obviously a tough third period for me, but it was just one period and I knew I had been playing good the rest of the series,” said the North Delta native “I

was super anxious going into (game six), but also excited to have that opportunity again. It’s pretty crazy to see a series where both teams lose three times on home ice then go into overtime in game seven, but it’s a storybook ending for us. ”

The Ice Hawks now will have the opportunity for redemption at the Cyclone Taylor Cup (April 13-16) after losing in the gold medal game a year ago on home ice. They will face the champions of the Kootenay and Vancouver Island leagues, along with host Revelstoke.

Among the four 20-year-olds return-

ing from last year ’ s team is Ladner’s Carson Hemenway who was among the game seven goal scorers Sunday. He had a chance to celebrate the championship with his younger brother Ty, one of seven rookies in the line-up for game seven

“Practising together each summer, it’s definitely a good feeling to win this with this him and being d-men partners the whole year we kind of clicked right away, obviously,” said Carson “There’s definitely some (unfinished business) at Cyclone. We got a taste of it last year and know what it’s all about”

It was an impressive medal haul for Delta athletes at the recent B.C. Winter Games in Greater Vernon. Delta Gymnastics Society’s Women’s Artistic Gymnastics (WAG) program has a reputation of shining bright at the biennial multi-sport competition and it certainly lived up to that reputation and then some.

Dominating the Vancouver-Coastal Zone 5 roster, the DGS contingent not only captured the Canadian Competitive Program (CCP) 7-and-8 team event, but also returned home with 12 individual medals.

The gold-medal winning team featured Mackenzie Hayes, Madelyn Hickling, Aliya Mori, Clare Steinke, Annabelle Ma and Miele Teiffel

Hayes went on to add two more gold medals, capturing the CCP 8 floor and vault events. She rounded out her medal haul with a silver in the CCP 8 individual all-around competition, finishing right behind Delta teammate and gold medalist Sydney Hollas who was the lone returning member from the 2020 Games team. Steinke was sixth.

Hollas also won silver on the floor and bronze on the uneven bars

Steinke added a second gold to her collection by

also capturing the CCP 8 beam event. Ma made it two Delta gymnasts on the podium with a bronze. Teiffel captured silver in the CCP 7 vault competition to go along with her team gold.

Hickling was another multi-medal winner with a bronze in the CCP 7 uneven bars

In Level 7 all-around, Mori, Tieffel and Hickling were fourth, fifth and sixth respectively

Meanwhile, Deltans helped the Vancouver-Coastal team roll to four straight wins and capture gold in ringette The team included: Nerissa Beeby, Amorey Cornmiller, Farryn Leigh, Rachael Pugsley and Gabriella Bender.

Delta Thistle Curling Club members Sydney TaylorHunt, Alexandria Halliday, Brooke Halliday and Erin Fitzgibbon returned home with a bronze medal

The Games were originally scheduled to take place in February of 2022 before organizers decided to postpone to 2023 due to several factors, including the COVID-19 pandemic and flooding and wildfires in many parts of the province.

The official name of the event remained the Greater Vernon 2022 BC Winter Games.

The 895 athletes, 300 coaches and 140 officials that attended the Games hailed from 122 communities across the province.
