Like the previous issue, inside this guide you’ll find: an extensive events calendar; profiles of local business people; “Macau Corners”, our section revealing some hidden spots around the city; tips on language, shopping, and networking; and the “Delta Traveler”, an overview of cities around the delta, with information on where to eat, where to stay, and what to do.

We want to thank our sponsors and everyone else who helped with this project. Also special thanks to our readers, for the valuable feedback we received last time. If you have any suggestions for our next winter issue, don’t hesitate to contact us. Enjoy the fall weather, and enjoy reading this Macau Inside Out.

Delta Bridges is proud to be involved in many exciting events this autumn. The Delta Inter Chamber Networking Event at the Mandarin Oriental is an unparalleled gathering of business people, government officials, and chambers of commerce members. The International Jazz Festival in Zhuhai this October is the first of its kind in this region, with world-class musicians performing in the historic venue of old Beishan Village.

Over the summer, we here at Delta Bridges have made many new friends, but have also had to say goodbye to some old ones. Our tireless project manager, Priel Manes, who was instrumental in bringing out both the last Macau Inside Out and this one, has sadly left Macau for new challenges elsewhere. We will all miss her, and she has set the bar very high with her work.

his cute yet stylish restaurant is so local that it doesn’t even have an English name, and usually no English to be found among the waitresses. Unknown to most foreigners, but full of happy locals at all hours, this restaurant has a wide variety of big portion main dishes, and even more interesting Asian desserts that keep most customers returning for a late snack. Enjoy the black & white design, the interesting art on the walls, and the remarkable variety of dishes on the menu.

Macau Business Talk /

Carole Delavelle

Macau Business Talk Daniel Cheng General Manager Mazda Motors (Macau) Limited, Vang Iek Group

D

Daniel Cheng,

aniel Cheng, a third generation member of the Vang Iek Group, joined his family business in 2002, rapidly advanced inside the company, and is currently acting as the General Manager of Motor Sales in Mazda Motors.

The group is now a sales leader, as well as the owner of the Macau Yellow Taxi, and is celebrating its 75 year anniversary. The changes in both the company and the city have been tremendous, Cheng says.

“Just like anyone else, I had to make my way through the company, and the years I’ve studied abroad gave me a good idea how things should be done, and of course helped me develop myself.” he explains. “The market is changing rapidly, and so is the company. We must stick with the newest trends and market changes in order to be on top of things.”

“Since 2004, the big Macau boom, our company sales grew 20% annually, but of course the financial crisis has changed the game. I guess that one of the important steps that we had to do as a company is keeping our name and reputation. People know us and trust us, they are our friends, and therefore even throughout the crisis we might have been short on sales, but didn’t lose customers.” When it comes to developing trends, Cheng says that transportation in Macau will see changes in the next few years – “now we are facing government regulations discouraging people from buying private cars, and on the other hand a growing demand for eco-friendly vehicles around town. Floral Designer, Ou La La 花藝設計師,Ou La La

riginally from France, Carole only recently came to Macau, but since her arrival she has been focusing on starting her own floral design company, Ou La La. She has her share of experience in starting a company with an original idea in Macau.

O

Working over the past 20 years along with big companies, this is Carole’s first experience as an entrepreneur, giving her the opportunity to express herself in a creative way. “I have been doing floral design as long as I can remember, and it has always been coming from my heart, following others’ instructions, but now it is more than this. Now it is me, working from my heart, but also planning ahead when it comes to business,” she explains.

The business she is introducing is far from familiar to the local market. “I bring something which is still much undeveloped. Creating floral designs, training people to handle flowers, and mainly bringing the idea that art such as this is not untouchable, but actually is very accessible.”

It hasn’t been all a bed of roses for Carole, as she explains her first experiences in Macau. “I didn’t know how things should be done, didn’t have the language, and didn’t know how to start. I therefore soon hired a consultant company that showed me how to start a business, and saved me many rookie mistakes. Moreover, finding a local partner opened the door for me to the local market, and helped me understand how to do things Macau-style.”

“My tip for making business is to not be afraid to bring on new ideas to the market, but at the same time one has to be observant enough and to see what should be the right approach to reach to the locals. Leave your ideas at home, walk in the street, sweat with the rest of the people, and see how things are really happening here.”

Delta Bridges

Therefore I believe that feeling the market’s new changes is the first step when it comes to doing business.” “My tip for doing business in Macau is – know Macau. This city is very unique – we are not Hong Kong, still skeptical about some new things, but on the other hand, we are not as traditional as China, and do appreciate luxury and brands. What might have given him the edge was his decision to leave Macau right after high school, and gain experience in neighboring Hong Kong. Today, his company has been operating for five years, and helps companies promote their businesses through different channels. “It is not hard to open a business in Macau,” he admits, “though the tricky thing would be keeping it. Maintaining good relationships with the people in your company’s field is essential, as well as respecting senior colleagues. Comparing his working experience in Hong Kong to Macau, Ray admits that Macau is still on the way, but not completely there yet, when it comes to the industry’s development. “The basic regulations in Macau towards businesses are not too encouraging, and pose some obstacles…and I hope that soon the government will help small businesses like ours to grow to our maximum capacity, without having to struggle with regulations.”

Shopping in Macau

Macau Weekender – where are you off to this weekend? Here are some spots you might want to check out on your next weekend – a minute before you book your trip away from the city1. Go to Taipa Village where you can rent a bicycle for a few hours and explore the hidden corners of Taipa, Coloane, or even Macau – if you dare to cross the bridge! It’s cheap, nice, and definitely worth the ride.

Y

es, it is a small city, actually the most densely populated region in the world (at least until the next reclaiming project), and you think that your option for new entertainment is taking the first ferry/plane out of here.

4. Go for a walk - Coloane village (路環市區) is a quiet corner where you can explore old shops with antiques, classic boat houses, and dried fish mongers. Walk, relax, enjoy the Zhuhai hills background, and stop for a drink in one of the two Lord Stow’s cafés. But be warned… Coloane is a popular weekend destination for a lot of tourists. So we advise visiting on an off-day. 5. Paintball – when you are in the mood for some fun and action, check out the paintball games in Macau Fisherman’s wharf and the Taipa Old Village where the old firework factory used to be. It’s an experience you won’t forget!

Shopping in Macau has two extreme ends: you either go to cheap bargain shops, or to the most high-end shops in the fancy casinos. Lower end – If you haven’t checked out the SunStar Shopping center (信達城), you haven’t been in Macau yet. This 7 stories high building is full of clothes shops, fashion accessories and many other surprises such as comic book shops and imported cosmetic stores. Prices are reasonable, and although you might be able to buy most of the products on the other side of the border, these are more chique and keep all Macau people coming back. The streets surrounding Sunstar Center are also surprising in their variety, and worth having a look. Another value shop to check out is Daiso, a Japanese chain with two locations in Macau, one near the border next to McDonalds and another one in the center. It is a “dollar store.” All merchandise is 12 mop, unless otherwise marked. A fantastic place to pick up bargain household items.

2. Bowling – you can sport your bowling shoes in both Macau Dome (Macau egg –澳門蛋), or in an older facility on the Macau side (佳景樂園), where you can also ice skate. 3. A photography spot – If you are into taking pictures, not of your egg tart, but actually of some nice scenes, all you have to do is let yourself get lost in the city, and take the less travelled streets, where you will surely find an unfamiliar scene.

Higher end – when it comes to spending, you’ve got to go to Macau’s finest and fanciest shopping malls, which are getting busier with the constant flow of visitors. New Yaohan (新八佰伴), The Venetian, and the Wynn offer you some top-dollar spending spots, but some shops still have good average-priced clothes that are more likely to stay wearable longer than the bargains on the streets.

Good To Know - Doing Business in Macau, Macau-Style /澳門經商之道 When looking for a job, chances to promote your business, or if you just need to expand your social circle, networking is the only way to go. When it comes to Macau, doing business is all about seeing and being seen. These networking events are your first step to entering the city’s business scene – so prepare your name cards and off you go… Chamber Events – some of the most active networks in town are definitely the chambers of commerce. Unrelated to your nationality, join the chambers - whether it is the BBAM (British), AMCHAM (American), French Chamber, Australian Chamber, or others, to meet the “who’s who” of Macau. You’ll have to register for the annual membership, but will get major discounts on the upscale activities. Delta Inter Chamber Event – If you are a member of any chamber in the Pearl River Delta, you should attend this quarterly event where you can meet people from different backgrounds and professions from all parts of the Delta – HK, Zhuhai, Guangzhou and Macau. Pre-registration is recommended, and the drinks are either self-paid or free with an entrance fee (usually 150mop). The locations of these gatherings vary among the city’s hottest bars and restaurants, giving you a good chance to explore new venues.
