From the Editor Van die Redakteur Kuier koeler seisoen in Die jaar is volstoom aan die gang en April-maand ook in volle swang. Dit is geen grappie om te sien hoe vinnig die kalenderdae verbysnel nie. Die eerste skoolkwartaal is reeds verby, nuwe winterklere word aangekoop of die oues word afgestof en aangepas - seisoene is stadig maar seker besig om te verander. The air is slightly colder, the mornings a tad darker and the evenings cooler. Just as the season is changing, you can be sure of one thing that will stay the same - our dedication to good reads! Dorpe kry name, dorpe se name verander, maar het jy ooit agter die kap van die byl gekom van jou dorp se naam?

Ons spring ook op die vliegtuig en reis na Letland om die kuns en kultuur van dié indrukwekkende land te ontdek. Voor jy jou oë uitvee is die winter hier en sal ons weer vir jou leesstof gee om heerlik voor die knetterende kaggel op te krul en te ontspan. Lekker lees!

A

s jy Bridgetown se verhaal wil hoor, moet jy dinge by die begin gaan haal. En dan moet jy ook eers die verwarring uitskakel: ons praat nie van Britstown nie, maar Bridgetown. Britstown is steeds volstoom aan die gang en boonop probeer die dorpie hul bes om die oewerkonyn – ook bekend as doekvoet – se voortbestaan te verseker. Nou waar het ek die naam Bridgetown gehoor? Wel, eerstens, met die Kaapse winter word die jaarlikse Bergrivier-kanomarathon van die Paarl tot by Velddrif gehou. Die gebeurtenis word landwyd gebeeldsend en beskryf. Verder word die kompetisie oor vier dae / skofte beslis met oornag blyplekke / wegspringplekke die volgende oggend. Bridgetown is vir ‘n dag in die kollig, want die tweede skof eindig en die derde skof – die langste van 72,8 km – begin die volgende oggend daar. Nou kan jy al twee en twee bymekaarsit en weet dat Bridgetown iewers langs die Bergrivier lê. Bogenoemde is een manier om by Bridgetown uit te kom, maar as jy nie ‘n kano het en kan roei nie, sal dit maar têre. ‘n Meer gemaklike manier om daar ‘n draai te maak, is per voertuig. Neem die Gouda-pad vanaf Moorreesburg deur die koringlande en volg die padpredikante. Die pad is bykans heeltemal geteer; net die laaste 2km is nog grondpad. Gewoonlik is Bridgetown doodstil – g’n motors, g’n verkeer, g’n mense, g’n diere, min geboue en selfs die Bergrivier vloei rustig langsaan verby. Soveel anders as die drome wat destyds daarvoor gekoester is. Tans behoort Bridgetown op ‘n huurpagstelsel aan Moorreesburg se NG Kerk en word dit as ‘n jeugoord bestuur met ‘n sekretaresse op Moorreesburg en ‘n oordbestuurder op Bridgetown. Ek loop nou dinge vooruit. Kom ons begin by die begin. Die oorspronklike plaas, Vledermuisdirf, se eerste eienaar was Isaac Jacobus van der Merwe Op die plaas was ‘n drif wat deur die Bergrivier geloop het. Tydens vloed, was die drif onbegaanbaar. Die togryers het hulle saans by dié uitspanning vermaak deur die talle vlermuise wat daar rondgevlieg het, te jag. Só het die plaasnaam ontstaan. Op 27 Januarie 1843 koop William Edmund Scarbrow die plaas, Vledermuisdrif, van I.J Van der Merwe – nie jou tipiese koper in daardie area nie. Jose Burman skryf dat die boere–bure van Bridgetown van ‘n “mal engelsman” gepraat het, want hy wou ‘n brug oor die Bergrivier hê en ‘n nedersetting stig, terwyl hulle, die boere, rustig hulle aandag aan hul boerdery bestee. Dis tog waaroor ‘n mens ‘n plaas aanskaf, sou hulle geredeneer het. Nou ontstaan die vrae: Wie was die Scarbrow? Waarvandaan het hy gekom? Hoe het hy aan sy geld gekom? Waarom het hy spesifiek dié plaas gekoop? Jose Burman het toevallig op ‘n aanhangsel in die Kaapse Argief afgekom, wat lui dat William Edmund Scarbrow in 1852 naby die Goodwin Sands op see omgekom het. Die Goodwin Sands is ‘n 16 km-lange sandbank in die Engelse kanaal met wisselende dieptes na gelang van die gety en weerstoestande. Die afleiding is gemaak dat hy iets met seevaart te doen kon gehad het. Dit was ‘n korrekte afleiding, want die seevaartjoernaal, Cape Almanac van 1843, het getoon dat die skoener (skip) Margaret van 46

ton, op 25 April 1842 by die Kaap aangekom het onder bevel van kaptein Scarbrow. Margaret het op 6 Februarie uit Sydney, Australië, na Kaapstad vertrek en die hawe weer op 17 Mei verlaat. William Edmund Scarbrow se testament wat in 1841 in Engeland opgestel is, is ook in die Kaapse Aktekantoor gevind. Daarvolgens was hy ‘n skeepskaptein en eienaar van Margaret of London. Nou kon sy bewegings makliker gevolg word. Kaptein Scarbrow het in 1841 van Coves op die Isle of Wright na Australië vertrek. Tussen 13-24 Oktober het hy op dié tog by Kaapstad aangedoen. In Australië aangekom, het hy 30 stoet merinoramme gekoop en teruggekeer na Suid-Afrika om dit hier te verkoop. ‘n Kennisgewing vir die veiling is gedateer 30 April 1842 en is op die Kaapse Parade gehou. Ná die veiling het Margaret nie na Australië of Engeland teruggekeer nie, maar is sy gebruik om langs die Suid-Afrikaanse kus handel te dryf. Sy het ook onder ‘n nuwe kaptein gevaar, want kaptein Scarbrow het Margaret verkoop en besluit om hom in Suid-Afrika te vestig. Margaret is op 26 Oktober 1846 saam met vyf ander skepe deur ‘n stormwind by Algoabaai op die rotse gedryf en verpletter. Met die geld van die veiling en die verkoop van Margaret, het William Edmund Scarbrow die

plaas, Vledermuisdrif van 3547 morg, gekoop. Die plaas se grondgebied het beide kante van die Bergrivier beslaan en het die drif, die hoofroete, noord- en noordooswaarts, van Malmesbury ingesluit. Daar was toe nog nie ‘n geordende padstelsel nie. Paaie, brûe en bergpasse het later hul beurt gekry. Die Brit het beslis buite die boks gedink. Hy het besef dat dorpe ontstaan waar mense saamtrek en dat daar sodoende ‘n mark sou ontwikkel. Die drif het die perfekte ligging vir die aanlê van ‘n dorp gehad. Hy het ook seker vermoed dat die drif later opgradeer sou word om met die toenemende vervoer tred te hou. Sy optimisme is onderstreep met die nuwe naam vir die pas aangekoopte plaas: Bridgetown. Laasgenoemde is darem ook makliker op die Engese tong! Om daad by die woord te voeg, het hy vir hom ‘n indrukwekkende woonhuis op die wal van die Bergrivier laat bou en sy vrou, Emma, uit Engeland laat kom. Daarna het hy sy dorp begin ontwikkel met die oprig van stalle, ‘n smidswinkel en ‘n hotel. Daar is ook graanskure en ‘n melkery gebou. Op landbougebied is besproeiingsvore aangelê, ‘n plantasie vir timmerhout is aangeplant en ‘n windgedrewe meul, is gebou. Scarbrow het ook ‘n winkel geopen en gereël vir ‘n twee-daagse posdiens tussen Kaapstad en Bridgetown op Volume 22

Dinsdae en Saterdae. Daar was ‘n bestaande meul bekend as Meulhuis op Bridgetown, wat die boere se koring teen vergoeding gemaal het. ‘n Meulhuis is volgens Andries Burger, ‘n ou vriend van my, ‘n meul met ‘n aangeboude huis. Sy ouers het in die ou meulhuis gewoon, totdat hulle na die nuwe huis, vandag se gastehuis, getrek het. Andries is daar op 14 Augustus 1940 gebore. Sy ouers het daar gewoon tot hul afsterwe. Die ronde fondasie voor die gastehuis kon die fondasie van die meul gewees het en dit het dieselfde mate as Mostert se meul in Mowbray. Beide kante van die drif het aan Scarbrow behoort en daar was ‘n pont met ‘n skuit wat die hoofroete noordwaarts “oop” gehou het – ongeag die riviervlak. Die bootman was Jan Kitshoff. Dit is seker nie onredelik om te bespiegel dat Scarbrow toe alreeds vertoë tot die regering gerig het, vir die bou van ‘n brug oor die Bergrivier by Bridgetown nie. Dit was immers die roete na die noorde. Waar die ou skooltjie gestaan het, was die Bergrivier op sy nouste, dus sou die brugkoste oor die rivier die minste wees. Die brugbouery het gesloer en die kaptein se finansiële posisie het versleg, want al sy geld is in sy “dorp” belê. Sy enigste keuse was om hom weer seewaarts te wend vir ‘n inkomste. Hy het sy gesin op Bridgetown agtergelaat en na Engeland vertrek. Daar het hy die bevel Volume 22

oorgeneem van ‘n boot, die 108 ton Blonde, wat aan die maatskappy Deslands behoort het. Blonde was onderweg van Jersey na Afrika, toe Scarbrow op 26 Desember 1852 sy lewe op see verloor het. Dit is onseker of Blonde ook vergaan het. Die afsterwe van William Edmund Scarbrow was nie die einde van die dorpie Bridgetown nie; alles was gereed vir ontwikkeling, die brug moes net gebou word. Tydens dié tyd is meer aandag aan paaie en padverbindings bestee. ‘n Sentrale Padraad sou binnekort gestig word en paaie, brûe en bergpasse sou gebou word. Die eerste brug oor die Bergrivier, is juis in 1853 in die Paarl gebou. Dit is in 1859 opgevolg met ‘n tweede brug by Franschhoek. Die derde brug is nie by Bridgetown gebou nie, maar wel op die plaas Vondeling, naby Piketberg, ‘n paar kilometer stroom-af van Bridgetown. Dié brug is in 1862 voltooi. Boonop was die brug op die bykans-reguit roete tussen Malmesbury en Piketberg. Dit was die figuurlike eerste spyker in Bridgetown as dorp, se doodskis. Bridgetown het sy belangrikheid verloor en was nie meer op die noordelike roete van Malmesbury nie. Die posdiens het wel nog bestaan. Mevrou Scarbrow is intussen weer getroud. Met die mondigwording van die jongste kind, het die kaptein se drie kinders elk ‘n derde geërf. Die

dogter, Charlotte Cornelia, het dadelik haar deel aan haar broer, Henry Ford Scarbrow, verkoop. Hy het weer dié twee dele verkoop. Later het dit as die plase, Klein Karmelsvlei en Jakkalsvlei, bekend geword. Jakkalsvlei was hoofsaaklik ‘n uitspanning- en jagplaas en is later by Klein Karmelsvlei, Drie Heuwel en Bridgetown ingelyf om sodoende van die kaarte te verdwyn. Die oudste seun – ook William Edmund Scarbrow – het die gedeelte geërf waarop Bridgetown geleë was. Hy het dit behou. Nadat hy as mediese dokter in Philadelphia in Amerika gekwalifiseer het, het hy na Suid-Afrika teruggekeer om as dokter op Bridgetown te praktiseer. Met ‘n dokter op die dorp, het dit gelyk of Bridgetown se toekoms verseker was. Bridgetown se finale nekslag was die stigting van die dorp Moorreesburg in 1879. Moorreesburg lê ook op die direkte roete noordwaarts tussen Malmesbury en Piketberg. Moorreesburg het floreer en Bridgetown het gekwyn. In 1883 het Dr. Scarbrow die plaas waarop Bridgetown lê, aan Wouter Theron en Frederick Serdyn verkoop en na Riebeek-Wes verhuis. Daarna het hy lank in die Strand gepraktiseer en later daar afgetree. Voorheen, toe die Strand nog Mostertsbaai geheet het, het Dr. Edmund Scarbrow daar as dokter gepraktiseer. Met die proklamering van die munisipaliteit in 1896, was hy toe tot die eerste burgemeester en daarom ook die eerste dokter van die Strand. Sy naam is verewig in die Strand met ‘n straat wat tot vandag sy naam dra. Vanaf 1883 het Bridgetown meer as dorp agteruitgegaan. Meeste geboue is gesloop en min van die amper-dorp het oorgebly – die stalle en smidswinkel het bly staan. In 1884 is grond deur William James Robertson geskenk vir die bou van ‘n skool, die Undenominational Public School of Bridgetown. In 1886 is die grond, twee morg en 50m roede aan die skoolkomitee van Bridgetown oorgedra. Die Scarbrows se woning is as skoolkoshuis ingerig. Die “kommissiegronde” en “kommissiehek” word vandag steeds só genoem. Daar was ook ‘n stal, bekend as die kommissiestal, waar die kinders wat te perd of per perdekar skool toe gekom het, die perde vir die dag kon laat. Vir byna 50 jaar het die gemeenskap deur middel van basaars, saamtrekke en ander maniere daarin geslaag om die onderwys vir hul kinders te finansier. Die skool was die middelpunt van die gemeenskap – konserte, debatte en bidure is daar gehou. Op die omliggende terrein is selfs landboutentoonstellings en skyfskietkompetisies gehou. Aan die einde van 1953 is die skool finaal gesluit en gesloop. Die behoefte aan ‘n jeugkamp was al lank dormant by die Moorreesburgse NG gemeente. Mnr. A Serdyn, ‘n gemeentelid, het ‘n stuk grond van 11 ha, aangrensend die Bergrivier waarop die Bridgetown skooltjie gestaan het, van die staat gehuur. Die grond het voor die onteiening in die 1970’s met die bou van die Misverstanddam, aan die Serdyns behoort. Hy het die erfpag aan die NG Kerk afgestaan. Die gemeente het ingespring, moue opgerol en beursies oopgemaak om die kampterrein te ontwikkel. Vandag is die kamp finansieël onafhanlik van die kerkraad. Byna weekliks gebruik een of ander jeuggroep die kamp. Die kamp kan aan ongeveer 60 seuns en 60 meisies billike verblyf aanbied. Dit is dan die verhaal van Bridgetown – ‘n plaas wat ‘n Engelse naam gekry het, sonder dat, óf die brug óf die dorp, ooit ‘n werklikheid geword het. 7

elebs is seker grotendeels selebs omdat hulle iemand is na wie die gemeenskap wil kyk of luister en moontlik ook omdat die verskillende mediasektore hul prentjies (mooi of minder mooi geskets) in die gemeenskap se gedagtes helder hou. Só dikwels dan is die selebs vir die verkeerde redes in die kollig en borrel die sensasie vuurwarm en in groot bollings uit die vulkane. Maar dan is daar meer besadigde sterre soos Juanita du Plessis wat reeds die hoogste kruin bereik het, maar, as 'n mens iemand soos Steve Hofmeyr losweg kan aanhaal toe hy 'n klompie jare gelede oor haar gepols is: Juanita wil net sing en ma wees. Jy sal nie oor haar, soos oor die res van ons se skandes en moleste, in koerante lees nie. Steve het toe van dié top-sangeres, wat nou al ver meer as 2 miljoen CD's en videos verkoop het, gesê sy is steeds die plat -op-die-aarde-girl van Gobabis wat ek destyds daar ontmoet het. Juanita se broer, Pieter Naudé, en sy vriend, Rennie Strauss het in 1990 'n tweeman-orkes in Windhoek begin genaamd Zenith en het vir 12 jaar dié hele land plat getoer. Pieter en Rennie het later in samewerking met Juanita en Doepie du Plessis die groep Jupidu gestig en ten minste een keer per maand saam opgetree. Juanita du Plessis se sangloopbaan is nou, kort voor haar 46te verjaarsdag, in sy 20ste jaar nadat

dit in 1998 begin het met haar debuutalbum. Sy het enkele jare later haar eerste groot treffer Ska-Rumba op die album Ek en Jy opgeneem en nooit weer teruggekyk nie. Ska-Rumba en Ek en Jy is in 2001 onderskeidelik as die Geraas-musiektoekennings se Liedjie van die Jaar en Album van die Jaar bekroon. Hierna het treffer op treffer gevolg en het sy, ondersteun deur haar oud-onderwyser, eggenoot, bestuurder en klankman, Herman (Doepie), reeds verskeie multiplatinumverkopers uitgereik. Juanita du Plessis was vroeg-vroeg volksbesit. Die gesin het enkele jare later uit Namibië na Pretoria verhuis. Du Plessis se tweede gospel-album, Vlieg Hoog, is aangewys as die top-Afrikaanse gospelalbum van alle tye en spog met vierdubbele platinumstatus. Haar DVD saam met die gewilde Theuns Jordaan, Bring jou Hart, het vyfdubbele platinumstatus verwerf. Juanita se lang sukseslys sluit ook treffers in soos Patyo, Wit Vlag, Engel van my hart, Jou Volla, Tussen woorde en Vlieg Hoog. Daar is ook 'n lang rits toekennings waaronder Ghoema's en Sama's. Haar gunstelingkleur is blou en sy hou van jeans en tekkies.

Sy drink graag Crème Soda, Appletizer en Southern Comfort en lê graag weg aan Doepie se heerlike Boerekos en seekos-disse. Sy en Doepie het drie kinders, Ruan, Mario en Franja. Ruan en Franja is ook sangers. Van haarself, sê dié boorling an Windhoek sy is sensitief en ’n private mens wat glo daar is goed wat sy met niemand hoef te deel nie. Maar sy is dankbaar vir bewonderaars wat "my nog altyd ondersteun het en sal niemand ooit afjak nie." Sy erken sy ly bietjie aan engtevrees. Juanita hou van Hentiesbaai se stilte. Sy het op 'n plaas grootgeword en was in haar eie woorde 'n "tomboy". Sy hou van perde en honde en wanneer hul besige program dit toelaat, breek die gesin graag weg na hul plaas buite Hammanskraal. Captivating For most South Africans, the capital of Latvia rarely makes a holiday destination. Clifford Roberts reckons it should. “Look around you,” our guide instructed the group standing on the cobbled square outside St Peter’s church. The overcast sky made the medieval buildings even more imposing. “Most of what you see is only a few decades old.” We had come to Riga, capital city of Latvia, and booked into an Airbnb in what it calls the Old Town. Less costly than western European cities and with plenty of history, natural charm and accessibility, Riga had caught our eye. As soon as we arrived, we realised that like many of the similar historic districts of Europe, much of the Old Town had to be re-built in the wake of WW2 bombings. Latvia lies on the western border of Russia and has as its neighbours along the Baltic Sea, Lithuania in the south and Estonia to the north. For various reasons, the area has been on a fault line of conflict for centuries. A new era began for all three in the early 1990s, when they gained their independence from the Soviet Union. For Latvia, it meant the end to long domination by tyrannical rulers and a chance for Riga in particular to return to former glory. Once, it had been among the most prominent of all the Russian empire. Today, there are traces of this tumultuous history everywhere – from a remarkable collection of art nouveau buildings to the chilling ruins of a synagogue set alight by Nazis soldiers with all the occupants trapped inside. We arrived in Riga by bus from the Estonian capital of Tallinn, using Google Maps to navigate to the second-storey apartment - our home for the week until we fly out. The inner city is easily walkable, although there are cars about. Buses serve the suburbs outside the Old Town and we make a purposeful attempt to get used to them even though we find the bus drivers unfriendly. It’s the free city tour that really opens our eyes to Riga. It assumes that all our research focused on the historic centre so we leave the Old Town and pass through the massive central market, divided across five former Zeppelin hangars. There are plenty of jokes about Latvians and their supposed love of potatoes, but the markets are filled with all varieties of breads and wonderful seafood, including smoked fish rubbed with garlic. We pause in the shadow of the Academy of Sciences, a 23-storey Soviet construction that locals refer to as Stalin’s Birthday Cake. It has an observation deck we return to later, braving the icy winds swirling about its parapets for some of the best views of the city. It’s from here that we get sight a taste of the modern Riga too; its national library opened in 2014 and is an unmissable landmark of glass and steel on the opposite bank of the Daugava River. Further on in the distance stands the Riga TV Tower, one of the tallest structures in Europe and a construction so outstanding in this landscape it appears other-worldly. The walking tour takes us through an old neighbourhood of wooden houses with gardens ravaged by too many harsh winters; and, past Volume 22 city’s most famous memorials - the one of the

Freedom Monument, which stands at the edge of a riverside park. There are a number of these green fringes that are neat breathing spaces between all the cobbles, tar and concrete. In Kronvalda Park we encounter Sam, a 12m statue of a monkey in a space suit and just one of the artworks scattered around between the trees. During our own exploration, we intentionally lose ourselves in the alleyways of the Old Town. We visit the oldest pharmacy, which also serves as a museum to the trade; the fascinating museum of medicine that recounts the journey of knowledge all the way from cave-dwellers to space travel; and a number of cathedrals including St Peter’s and the orthodox Nativity Cathedral. We snap pictures of Riga’s famous Cat House, so named for the twin feline statues precariously balanced on its turrets; and, at the House of Blackheads medieval guild. We take the bus out to the flea market at Latgale Tirgus, a dense market of car spares with a smattering of memorabilia from the Communist era. Most evenings, we buy groceries and stream Johannes Kerkorrel and Koos Kombuis while preparing dinner and updating our diaries. One night, we try a bottle of the Riga Black Balsam – a local drink of herbs and liquorice that’s sold in ceramic bottles. Over the course of days, we also discover

more than a few gems for dining out: Gauja Café, a quiet spot away from the buzz of the high street; Muusu, a contemporary restaurant on Skarnu Road; and, Vina Studija wine bar and restaurant, where we hunt for South African labels. Later, we discover what becomes our favourite bolt hole during our short stay and we return a few times to the bar of Café Leningrad. It’s a local, basement hangout with little signage to reveal its nature. The lighting is low while the bartender and décor looks like they got stuck in 80s punk, which is why we are thrilled to spend more than a few hours in the evenings emptying multiple draughts.

T

he City of Jacarandas – Pretoria - has a liveliness unlike any other, says Clifford Roberts after a recent visit. There’s something about going back to the place where you were raised; a place you shared with friends and close family, some of whom aren’t around anymore to complete the puzzle of memories. High school, Studies. It has been more than two decades. If you’ve never been, Pretoria’s status as administrative capital certainly holds nothing enticing - nobody can get excited about administration. It certainly doesn’t suggest there’s actually enough to attract an out-of-towner to visit. It took a meeting with a friend from Australia that had me return. Over a long-weekend, we criss-crossed the city, exploring the sights. When I left, we were engaged in war everywhere. Pretoria was the centre of absolute power; you couldn’t imagine a city without uniforms on the streets and jets in the sky. Driving into the city, the recollections washed over me. Still familiar were the grid of streets, many with different names. Pretorius is there, Struben too. The Apies River is still choked with pollution in places and though the statue of Paul Kruger is surrounded by security fencing, the pigeons still love perching on it. This time of the year in the city has always been most beautiful; its open spaces are choked with green. From every part of the concrete-and-tar CBD, lush hills of the veld and suburbs can be seen. And, although the flowers of its famous Jacarandas had come and gone, their leafy heads were as beautiful as ever. I found memory re-connected with smell

too thanks to the herbal notes of khakibos on the humid, afternoon breeze. There was no specific order to our tour, although the focus was historical. Among the visits was a trip to the museum of Sammy Marks, on Bronkhorstspruit Road. Marks was an industrialist during Gauteng’s boomtime of the late 1800s. His interests were varied and influential, but to see his former Victorian mansion – situated at the end of a red-clay track – is a reminder of the life and turmoil of those times. Today, you can tour the building and enjoy light refreshments in the tea garden. A visit to Pretoria is perhaps not complete with a trip to the imposing Voortrekker Monument. We arrive just before closing; few people are around. It’s not just the size and silence of the place that stays with you, but the way the day’s heat radiates from the building’s stone work. I don’t remember the lift being there, but we take it. From the thick parapets, we spot landmarks – the old Iscor building now home to a mining company; Thaba Tshwane (formerly Voortrekkerhoogte military base); the Tshwane University of Technology; and, the CBD peeking through the koppies. We can see the old forts from here as well as younger landmarks like the Freedom Park memorial, which overlooks the capital. It is a striking construction in a long tradition for this part of the world. Architecture defines a place and Pretoria is no different, from the sprawling Lego building of Unisa to the 132-storey Absa building of the 1970s; the dark Reserve Bank skyscraper to the neo-classical Church Square. At the Union buildings, I stand on the lawns next to the statue of Louis Botha on his horse and gaze up towards the amphitheatre of the grand,

sandstone construction designed by Sir Herbert Baker. In its maw is a huge statue of Nelson Mandela; his characterisation somehow contrasting the stiff colonial style behind him. It’s this continuous ability to surprise that makes Pretoria so attractive. Out in the suburbs, I’m amazed by the expansion around my old school and the giant public artworks. Then, only minutes from the bustling streets, we’re in Rietvlei Nature Reserve where we spend the afternoon watching antelope and birds in the Highveld grasslands. It’s just one of the nature experiences to be had along with the Austin Roberts Bird Sanctuary in Nieuw Muckleneuk; Groenkloof and Wonderboom Nature Reserves; national zoo, biggest of its kind in the country; and, 76ha Pretoria Botanical Gardens. Seeing where it all began is of course another reason for visiting Gauteng, home to places like the Maropeng Cradle of Humankind and the Ditsong National Museum of Natural History on Pretoria’s Paul Kruger Street. The large sandstone building with dinosaurs and a skeleton of a Blue Whale on its doorstep make it unmistakable and we spend a few hours exploring the fascinating exhibits. The light is sharp when we step out of the cool, dark interiors of the museum, deciding to make our final stop at something lighter: a pioneering local brewery and distillery. In the sky, the afternoon storm clouds have already started gathering and the air is heavy. Moritz Kallmeyer founded Draymans in 1997, long before the craft industry took flight in SA. We make it to the airport just in time, a bottle of Highveld Single Malt safely tucked away for the days when we dream of Pretoria again.

Riebeekvallei... Cruythoff Die storie het só begin. So amper soos so baie ander, volgens oorlewering, van 'n dapper ontdekker en sy manskappe, uitgestuur deur die Kaapse heerser van die tyd wat die onherbergsame wildernis moes verken en talle ontberinge moes deurmaak tot hulle die nag op die kruin van die berg of die nek geslaap het. Daardie volgende oggend vroegdag het hulle hoenders hoor kraai en geweet hier woon reeds ander mense. Wel, blykbaar was dit met die Riebeekvallei presies dieselfde. Op die oggend van 4 Februarie 1661 het ene Pieter Cruythoff en sy span met dagbreek die lewe van die plaaslike San-inwoners gewaar soos hulle hul aan die ruig en vrugbare vallei met volop wildlewe (waaronder renosters, leeus, “duisende hartebeeste” en kwaggas) vergaap het. Só lui die storie. Die vallei was reeds bewoon deur die Sonquas, wat jagters was, en Khoi-Khoi wat veeboere was. 'n Oud-inwoner, Chris Murphy, het van dié San-inwoners se rotstekeninge teen Kasteelberg met ons gedeel. Glo het een lid van die geselskap, 'n heer Pieter van Meerhoff, die berg daar en dan na Jan van Riebeeck vernoem – Riebeek's Kasteelberg. Eersgenoemde se naam herleef deesdae

in die naam van die kelder bo die nek van Bothmanskloof. Cruythoff en Van Meerhof het saam en apart etlike ekspedisies noordwaarts in die Weskusstreek onderneem. Riebeek-Kasteel, beman deur nege man, het 'n buitepos vir die Kompanjie geword en belangrike kommunikasie na en van die Kaap is destyds gedoen met die afvuur van opeenvolgende kanonne. Een kanon wat van bo-op Kasteelberg afgevuur is, is vandag in die voortrekkertuin op die plein in Riebeek-Kasteel te sien. Jare later in die 1700's het die eerste boere die vallei betrek en die wynbedryf hier gevestig. Heelparty plase uit daardie tyd het behoue gebly soos Allesverloren, Kloovenburg, Du Vlei (voorheen Vlysbank) en Sonquasdrift. Nou, 356 jaar ná die Cruythoff-ekspedisie, is die vallei steeds een van vrugbaarheid en oorvloed. Bekend vir veral sy graan, druiwe, wyn, vroeër jare ook tabak en latere jare olywe, is die Riebeekvallei aan die voet van die 946m- hoë Kasteelberg, deesdae een van ons land se gewildste troubestemmings. Dit is ook tuiste vir kunstenaars, ander inwoners in professionele beroepe wat tuis werk en na en

van Kaapstad pendel en heelparty stedelinge het hier naweekhuise om aan die stadsgewoel te ontkom. Hier is 'n toenemende verskeidenheid restaurante gewild by inwoners en besoekers van ver en naburige dorpe. Bekendes wat gereeld hier kuier of hier woon, sluit in Max du Preez, Morné du Plessis, George Ballot, die akteurspaar Tinarie Van Wyk Loots en Erik Holm en oud-joernalis Jacques Pauw. Die twee buurdorpies Riebeek-Kasteel en Riebeek-Wes het voorheen by die inwoners as onderskeidelik Mossienes en Vinknes bekend gestaan. Riebeek-Kasteel het in 1975 munisipale status verkry. Die NG-kerkgebou, 'n bekende baken tussen die skool en die Royal Hotel (een van die oudste in die land met die langste stoep), is in die vroeë 1900's ingewy nadat dit teen 'n totale koste van £6 000 voltooi is. Riebeek-Wes het twee van die mees prominente staatsmanne in die land se geskiedenis opgelewer. Filosoof Jan Smuts (later veldmaarskalk) en teoloog/joernalis D.F. Malan (later eerste minister), is onderskeidelik in 1870 en 1874 op die plase Ongegund en Allesverloren gebore. Die middelbare skool op die dorp het ook tot onlangs Smuts-Malan geheet.

Smuts-trofee meer as een keer verower het. Dit is nogal 'n stukkie ironie dat die Malans die Smuts-trofee sou verower. Sedertdien het die plaas verskeie topwyntoekennings ontvang. Ook die ander groot wynprodusente in die vallei spog met 'n ryk oes aan toekennings vir hul spogwyne. Só het die Genl. Smuts-trofee 'n paar jaar gelede weer teruggekeer na die vallei toe Riebeek Kelder dit op die nasionale jongwynskou met hul 2011 Viognier verower het. Kloovenburg, in rugbykringe bekend as die tuiste van die legendariese Springbok Piet Spiere du Toit en deesdae ook geboortegrond van Bok Pieter-Steph en sy drie jonger broers, is 'n spogwyn- en olyfplaas. Naas die reeks bekroonde wyne, het verskeie olyftoekennings ook al hul staanplek hier gevind onder leiding van Pieter en Annalene du Toit. Nog 'n familie wat hulle in die vallei met sy besondere vistas en aanloklike vrugbaarheid kom vestig het, is die Brinks. Aan die voete

van Kasteelberg met die bekende “preekstoelformasie” as agtergrond, het hulle die jongste van die vallei se Groot 5 (wynkelders) buite RiebeekWes gebou. Maar jongste of te nie (Pulpit Rock-wynkelder is ook al meer as 12 jaar oud) raak die trofeekaste ook vinnig vol. Een van hul laaste toekennings was vir een van die vyf wenners in die 2016 Absa Perold Kaapse Versnit-toekenning met hul Pulpit Rock Louisa 2013 (Pinotage 50%/Cabernet Sauvignon 45%/Shiraz 5%). Plattelandse dorpe word dikwels gekenmerk deur spesifieke groot families soos die Vlokke van Riebeek. Een van die huidige generasie Vlokke, Johan, bedryf saam met sy gesin Het Vlock Casteel met van die vallei se beste wyne wat in die proelokaal beskikbaar is asook 'n besonderse wye reeks olyf- en olyfverwante produkte. Met die ontwikkeling van die olyfbedryf in die vallei die laaste paar dekades, het die eerste olyffees hier in 2001 gestalte gekry onder die aanvoering van Juliane en Mike Meredith, destyds die eienaars van die Olive Boutique. Dit was 16 jaar gelede en die vallei was nog in babadoeke ten opsigte van die ontwikkeling weg van 'n klein en stil Afrikaanse plattelandse

dorpie-karakter. Daar is toe op die eerste naweek in Mei besluit as die beste tyd om te verseker die olyfplukseisoen is al aan die gang. Dit was baanbrekerswerk en moeilik om behoorlik voor te berei en besoekertalle te voorspel. Boonop het die weer daardie jaar gedraai en die Vrydagnag was daar 'n sneeuval op die hoogste berge. Só vertel Chris Murphy, wat ook by die eerste fees betrokke was. Daar was toe 'n geskatte 2000 feesgangers en die fees het sedertdien aansienlik gegroei met 'n geskatte hoogste besoekertal enkele jare gelede van ongeveer 20 000. Die organiseerders het oor die jare al die aflosstokkie etlike keer oorgegee en die huidige komitee het vanjaar 'n hernieude poging aangewend om plaaslike kultuur en produkte uit die vallei te bevorder. Daar is nou weer sewe hoofbesoekpunte wat amptelik deel uitmaak van die 2017 Olyffeesprogram. Hulle is Kloovenburg, Het Vlock Casteel, Olive Boutique, Die Plein op Riebeek-Kasteel (waar die grootste fokus op plaaslike produkte sal val), Riebeek Kelder, Allesverloren en Pulpit Rock.

A keen landscape photographer William Walker and his wife, Mary, owns the Pictorex Print Studio and gallery in Riebeek Kasteel. He attended a digital printing workshop at The Brookes Institute in Santa Barbara, California, which was presented by one of the early pioneers of digital printing, Mac Holbet, and one of the world’s leading photographers, John Paul Caponigro. Pictorex is one of only a handful of South African printers to offer Piezography Black and White printing. Pictorex has dedicated an Epson 3880, using seven shades of grey, to print the best black and white prints possible. Walker shares some pictures from his collection "Riebeek Kasteel at Night". Coping with the help of Akeso Parents must play a vital role in helping, and guiding children. Many young people, from primary school to university, feel the pressure to perform and ‘deliver the goods’ in a challenging new year and environment. Faced by constant change, new demands and peer pressure, many young people find it increasingly hard to mentally cope, let alone perform optimally. This may also increase the risk of mental disorders such as depression and anxiety, potentially with crippling consequences if not treated timeously and professionally. “It would be naïve for us to believe that these types of disorders can be prevented completely, however, by following some of the basic pointers and strategies set out below, some mental disorders in their milder forms can either be prevented or at least serve as an early warning sign for parents to take the appropriate steps and seek professional help to deal with disorders such depression and anxiety,” says Mark de la Rey, clinical psychologist at Akeso Psychiatric Clinic in Kenilworth, Cape Town, and the clinic’s Young Adult Unit manager. Parents play vital role “Indeed, more than ever, parents have a vital role to play in assisting and guiding their children, irrespective of their age, so that they can cope with modern-day demands and deal with the ever-increasing pressure of academic, sport and social demands during their school and university years,” De la Rey stresses. “Parents must spend time with their children and give them a stable home environment. At the same time, they must negotiate home rules, including consequences of rule-breaking, with their kids,” he advises. Sleep To stay mentally fit and alert, and thus be able to cope with every curve ball life throws at them, it’s

“almost mandatory” for children to sleep for seven to nine hours during the week, adds De la Rey. “To this end, parents must set some boundaries around access to social media. Communication Ongoing communication is vital. “Teens often will prefer not to talk about what’s going on because they feel that we, as adults, will not understand and they don’t want to burden us. Parents need to make time available to their child/teen if they are to trust you with their difficulties. An open forum for discussion, rather than a domineering judgmental attitude, will facilitate this. Encourage them through expressing confidence in them and being open to some of the difficult topics teens often want to talk about. Peer pressure “In terms of peer pressure, teens and kids of most ages have an immense struggle on their hands. They feel they need to stand out from the crowd, yet at the same time want to be accepted and part of - at times a contradictory proposition for them. “When you look at it from the ‘responsible adult’ world, the choices are obvious, but when it’s from the teen’s perspective, it’s an anxiety-provoking prospect. They constantly grapple with the issue, fearing that if they do not toe the line, they may have not friends, that friends may find them boring and turn a cold shoulder. They dread the possibility of being all alone and forgotten.” When trying to help them with this issue, parents should keep all of their fears and concerns in mind, De la Rey advises. He suggests the following generic questions which parents can encourage teens to ask themselves before deciding to follow the crowd: Could this harm me physically?; Could this harm someone else?; Is this against the law?;Could I go to jail?; What are the long-term effects of my actions to my health?

My education? My family relationships? Bullying From primary school right up to university, bullying is a scourge. “To effectively deal with this and ensure the best possible outcome, it’s important to teach your child how to recognise and react to bullying, regardless of who the victim is. Also, talk about and ‘model’ empathy, which is being sensitive to and understanding how other people feel. This can help prevent your child from becoming involved in bullying others,” explains De la Rey. “Children on both sides of bullying incidents need help. Adults must first recognise that bullying should not be ignored. "This includes the form of bullying that makes others feel excluded and shunned. Die voorportaal

Ons as familie glo dat die voorportaal die storie en atmosfeer van die huis en sy mense vertel. ‘n Gang het aanvanklik vanuit die portaal gestrek, met deure aan die bopunt wat weerskante toegang tot ander vertrekke verleen het. Die mure is uitgeslaan vir meer ruimte wat die voorportaal deel van die leefvertrek, gesinskamer en eetkamer gemaak het. Die dooie muur is toe vervang met 'n binnebraai en gesellige sitarea. Die matte is uitgehaal en vervang met wit porseleinteëls. Die laaikas, `n geskenk van ons ouers, is in die voorportaal geplaas met reisaandenkings daarop. Aangesien die kas skerp hoeke en reguit lyne het, is die rondings van die nis met vierkantige hoeke vervang. Dit het tot ‘n meer moderne voorkoms bygedra. Kolligte is aangebring, sodat die mooi porseleinborde vanuit China tot hulle reg kon kom. Die mooi blou lig, al die pad van Istanbul, skakel perfek in by die res van die dekor en verleen `n warmte aan hierdie deel van die huis.

Die beligting is met moderne gesonke ligte vervang en die plafon is wit geverf vir nog meer lig in die vertrek. Die kleur waarop besluit is vir die mure, is “French Clay”,`n neutrale liggrys, sodat die aandag nie van die skilderye en gordyne weggeneem sou word nie. Jy sal ook nie sommer moeg raak vir die kleur nie. Moderne gordynrelings het die ou kappe vervang en die gordyne se kleur is ook neutraal, sodat ons 12 sitplek-houteetkamertafel, beklemtoon kon word.

Die leefvertrek

Mure moet uit en af. So wat nou? Nooi vriende vir `n gesellig aand, gee vir elkeen `n voorhamer en nooi hulle uit om hul frustrasies op die mure uit te haal en siedaar, binne een aand is al die mure af- en uitgekap nadat vriende heerlik saamgekuier het. Haal matte uit vir nuwe wit proseleinteëls en “White Ash”-vinielvloere. Daar is baie gespaar op pleisterwerk, omdat feitlik al die binnemure uitgebreek is en die mure wat behou is, almal in `n baie goeie toestand was. Vierkantige venstertjies is toegebou vir een groot muur waarteen ‘n televisie, musieksentrum en skilderye vertoon word. Bou `n heerlike groot binnebraai in, met plek vir mandjies vol hout. Die binnebraai is ook een van die fokuspunte van die vertrek en skep `n warm, knus en gesellige atmosfeer wat jou dadelik laat welkom voel.

Die buitestoep

Die behoefte was om buite te kan kuier, terwyl die kinders swem. Aangesien die braai nie afgepleister was nie, is ‘n baie swaar atmosfeer geskep. Die braai is toe reguit gebou, afgewerk en gepleister om ‘n ligter en meer afgeronde gevoel te gee. Daar is ‘n tydelike houtmuur tussen die twee stoepe geplaas. Dit skei die braai-area van die gedeelte waar die wasgoedlyn is en die gereedskap gestoor word. Daar is ook ‘n nuwe deur ingebou waarvan die stylvolle ysterhek tot die area se dekor bydrae. In houtkiste op wieletjies onder die braai kan hout en braaigereedskap netjies gebêre word. Volume 22

Na...

Na... Die ou bal-en-klou-tafel is afgeskuur en met chalk-verf geverf. Kussings is met 'n streepen blommotief oorgetrek om ‘n heerlike buitegevoel te skep en die wit balke (voorheen donker) gee nou die area ‘n groter en ligter gevoel. Blou emalje-ligte hang bokant die tafel om in te skakel by die kleur van die kussings. Klein muurtjies wat aanvanklik op die stoep was, is afgebreek. Die trappe op die stoep is in die lengte verleng om in somermaande as ekstra sitplek met strooikussings te dien. Die ou wasbakkassie et vir 'n ander kas plekgemaak. Dié is geverf en 'n klein handewasbak is daarin aangebring.Die dun ysterpype (pilare) op die• stoep is met hout Leefstyl Lifestyle geboks om dit ‘n meer dramatiese gevoel te gee.

Gesels met Lorinda de Reuck...

In haar hande.. kry klei, fee lewe A

s pottebakker Lorinda de Reuck (49) gesels, praat alles saam … haar hande, oë, lyf ... en haar klingellaggie is nooit ver nie, vertel Alida Buckle. Nes haar veelkleurige bloes is haar huis en werkswinkel vol helder kleure en ontwerpe. Die eksklusiewe eetstelle wat kliënte by haar bestel, is erfgoed, so uniek en vol karakter is dit. Soos baie pottebakkers het Lorinda maar begin met kolle en strepies, sê sy, maar later haar eie stempel begin afdruk. Op die oomblik lê haar hart in speelse, helder kleure en patrone, wat saam amper ‘n Alice-inWonderland-gevoel gee. Maar vir haar getroue kliënte verf sy enige tema – van Chinese skoonskrif, blou windpompe en naaldekokers tot rose en Afrika-vroue. Maar dis by feetjies waar haar hart eintlik lê. En die misterieuse. As sy vertel van die feetjiewinkel wat sy vroeër jare (2007) by die Paternoster-vismark gehad het, blink haar oë so en raak sy so opgewonde dat ‘n mens jou kan verbeel dat jy ook in hulle kan glo. Die feetjies het sy sommer in haar gewone oond drooggebak teen 120 grade Celsius. Lorinda meen daar lê betekenis in die feit dat die feetjiekoningin in Skandinawiese volksvertellinge se naam Laurenda is ... Feetjies was dan ook haar eerste tema as pottebakker - sewe jaar gelede, voor die groot droogoond in haar lewe gekom het. Daarmee kan sy nou enige kleiproduk droogbak, klein en groot. Dit hou tot tien rakke en word net aangeskakel wanneer dit heeltemal vol is, weens hoë elektrisiteitsgebruik. Daarmee kon sy haar produklys heelwat uitbrei – tradisionele eetborde, kleinbordjies, sopborde, soesjie-bordjies, sout-en-peperpotjies en enigiets anders waaruit geëet kan word. In die pottebakkersproses wat Lorinda volg, word haar kunswerke drie keer deur die droogoond gesit. Die eerste keer word die pas-gevormde rou produk net uitgedroog. Dan verf sy die onderglasuur aan (nie een of ander soort verf soos baie mense dink nie, eerder ‘n soort klei) waarna dit weer gebak word. Daarna word glasuur oorgeverf, wat die

onderglasuur seël. Dit is hier met die onderglasuur-stap waarmee Lorinda die meeste pret het. “Om die produk te versier is wat my plesier verskaf. Dit is waar my passie lê.” “Klei lewe. Dit is nie soos ‘n stuk hout waarmee jy moet baklei nie. Klei groei uit jou hande uit. Solank dit nog nie in die oond was nie, kan dit oorgedoen word as ek nie daarvan hou nie.” Maar die lekkerste bly die skilder van die kleiwerk. Sy het eendag nie geweet wat om volgende te doen nie, na ‘n sout en peperpotjie gekyk en net besluit sy gaan dit "spectacular” maak. Dié proses het haar ‘n week en ‘n half per potjie geneem, maar die eindproduk was so besonders dat dit dadelik verkoop het. Dit was die begin van haar whimsical-ontwerpe. “Ek kan soms down the rabbit hole gaan met my ontwerpe. “Ek hou daarvan om dinge te doen wat ondoenbaar lyk, soos om klei in wurmpies te rol en te vleg vir ‘n groot bak. Of om ‘n bak met stekels te maak wat soos ‘n krimpvarkie lyk." Behalwe dat sy ook ‘n lewe uit haar pottebakkery maak, bieg sy dat haar klei en kuns haar “sanity” is. “Ek is so gelukkig dat ek dit kan doen waaroor ek ‘passionate’ is en waaroor ek in die nag droom.” Lorinda hou ‘n ideeboekie langs haar bed en wanneer sy aan iets in die middel van die nag dink, skryf sy dit neer. “Anders het ek dit teen die oggend al weer vergeet.” Sy plak ook prente in haar plakboek. Enigiets wat vir haar mooi is of ‘n interessante patroon het. “As ek met ‘n bord of iets moet begin, dan blaai ek deur my boek. As iets uitstaan, dan begin ek dit op die bord teken.” Sy vertel dat sy al van haar mooiste skeppings gemaak het nadat sy die aanvanklike ontwerp drie of meer keer afgeskuur en oor begin het. Die kleiwerke wat nie uitwerk nie, of in die uitdroogproses breek, word in haar tuin gesit sodat die plante deur die gate kan groei. Haar twee dogters het grootgeword met ‘n ma wat altyd ‘n werkswinkel gehad het en met kuns en handewerk besig was. Juweliersware, skilder, kaartjies – Lorinda het al alles gemaak. Ná skool het sy modeontwerp gaan studeer, maar eers toe sy swanger was met Anke, haar

eerste klerereeks gemaak – kraamdrag vir swanger vroue. Sy het partytjies gereël, “amper soos die Tupper-parties”, waar haar twee susters die klere moes paradeer. Later het sy babadrag gemaak. Lorinda het selfs vir vyf jaar poppekasvertonings oor die hele Kaap gedoen. “Dit was die lekkerste vyf jaar. Ek het my gate uit geniet om die poppe te maak, die stories te skryf en dit dan op te voer.” Anke en Dyna het saam rondgegaan en op hul kombersies hul verkyk aan hul ma wat rondspring en poppekas hou. Nou geniet Lorinda dit om die bestellings klaar te maak en vir elke vrou te gee wat sy graag wil hê. Tussenin sorg sy darem vir lekker speeltyd ... soos die bak waaruit vier bome moet groei en mekaar bo-oor ontmoet. Sy werk nog aan die idee in haar kop, maar die bak "gáán gebeur". Sy is ook mal oor teepotte en het al ‘n verskeidenheid gemaak. Engelpotte met vlerke as ore en ‘n kameelperdpot waarvan die een been die tuit is. “As ek ‘n ou tannie was wat alleen gebly het, sou al my mure vol teepotte gewees het,” beduie sy en lag weer lekker. Lorinda en haar man, Anthony, het twaalf jaar gelede op ‘n kleinhoewe aan die Weskus beland omdat hulle in hul harte maar nog altyd op soek was na ‘n stukkie grond, weg van alles. Hulle is albei gebore en getoë Kapenaars - uit Durbanville. Ná ‘n onverwagte meevallertjie na die afsterwe van haar pa, het hulle die advertensie gesien, die kleinhoewe gekoop en Weskus toe getrek. Vandag is die hele gesin ingeburger in die Vredenburg-distrik met Anthony (54) wat die West Coast Combat School, ‘n gevegskunsklub op Vredenburg besit; oudste dogter Anke (27), wat ‘n persoonlike afrigter by Oxigym is; en Dena (25), ‘n ervare ruiter wat perdrylesse gee en perde afrig. “Ek verlang soms nog na die Kaap. Na my mense, familie, pêlle, maar in die stad kan jy nie die sterretjies sien nie.” Lorinda se pottebakkery heet Wakonda Pottery Studio. Country Beef Shin Recipe It is that time of the year when we welcome the cooler weather and the longer nights. It is also the ideal time to invite, entertain and celebrate old friendships. We asked Bertus Bester of the Allesverloren Function and Conference Venue in Riebeek West to share one of his favourite and affordable recipes for 12 tot 15 guests. Cook, share and enjoy with a bottle of your favourite Allesverloren wine.

Ingredients:

5 kg beef shin (cut into rounds about 5cm thick) Olive oil for frying 2 litres beef stock (always better to make your own) 3 cups red wine 3 dessert spoons of Worcestershire sauce 6 garlic cloves 2 teaspoon dried basil 4 sprigs fresh thyme 4 bay leaves 2 tins peeled chopped tomatoes 5 onions, roughly chopped 2 bunches celery (cut in small rings) 3 potatoes (cut into small squares) 6 carrots (cut into small squares) 1 cup of cake flour 1 tin baked beans in tomato sauce

Method:

Heat oven to 180 degree Celsius Season the shins with salt & freshly grounded black pepper, roll in flour and fry until brown in the same pot you going to use to cook the shins in. When done remove the shins from the pot and set aside. Add more oil to the pot and fry the onions & garlic until golden brown, add the beef stock, red wine, Worcestershire sauce, basil, bay leaves, tinned tomatoes, carrots, potatoes & celery.
