Welcome to Denison

We cannot wait to welcome you to your new “Home on The Hill” this summer. But frst we need you to complete some tasks before you can join our community.

YOUR ENROLLMENT CHECKLIST

The Enrollment Checklist in your Admitted Student Portal at connect.denison.edu is your one-stop shop for all of the forms and tasks that are required for you to complete your transition to Denison.

These forms and tasks should be completed by the student. We ask students to complete the Enrollment Checklist in phases. Once you finish one phase, you will be able to start on the next phase.

Please pay special attention to the due dates outlined for each phase in your Admitted Student Portal. Failure to complete a phase by the required due date could result in delay of information, less optimal placement or consideration, or even rescission of admission. Should you have a valid reason to request an extension on a deadline, please don’t hesitate to contact admission@denison.edu.

The following pages outline the forms included in each phase on the Enrollment Checklist, and where further information is located inside this Enrollment Guide.

Ofce of First-Year Experience

The Ofce of First-Year Experience guides new students through their transition into the Denison community by creating a space to embrace the academic, social, and residential challenges and opportunities embedded in a four-year liberal arts college experience.

The First-Year Experience team leads new students to fnd a sense of belonging, to build confdence in navigating independence, and to become agents of their own well-being and college experience. Through transition programs, students learn to navigate campus, adjust to the rigor of a liberal arts education, and begin to develop a sense of purpose. The frst step is June-O.

June-O

June Orientation (June-O) is a two-day experience where you will familiarize yourself with Denison, learn about opportunities and campus resources, and meet faculty, current students, and some of your frst-year peers.

All new Denisonians will attend both June-O and Aug-O in the summer before they begin their frst semester at Denison. You will leave June-O with your fall class schedule and will feel more prepared for a successful start when you return to campus in the fall.

All incoming domestic frst-year students will register for one of our fve June-O sessions (four on-campus, one virtual). Students must be available for both days of their session as they will be working with a Faculty Advisor and an Orientation Leader on academic advising and course registration throughout that time.

Up to two parents or adult family members are welcome and are encouraged to attend our concurrent June-O for Families orientation program.

Programs begin at noon on Day 1, and conclude at 12:30 p.m. on Day 2. There is no family programming on Day 2 of the Virtual June-O program.

International students still residing in their native country will register for a Virtual June-O for Students Coming from Abroad session.

Times for all sessions, including virtual sessions, are in Eastern Daylight Time.

11

Contact Cherry Valley Hotel to make your reservation!

FEES

The fee to participate in an on-campus session is $300. This fee covers the cost of orientation materials, student on-campus lodging, linens, food, and up to two adult family member guests. Student participants are required to stay overnight in a residence hall as part of their program. Family members will stay of campus.

Getting
to Denison

International Arrival

Denison has a strong commitment to our international community, which includes students and faculty who are foreign nationals, U.S. citizens who have international experience through work or family connections, and U.S. nationals who identify themselves as global citizens. As a community, we take seriously the challenges associated with learning to live, work, learn, and create in a world that is wonderfully diverse and increasingly interdependent.

New Denisonians coming from abroad will be able to arrive on campus a few days before the Pre Orientation or Aug-O programming begins. The Center for Global Programs staff will help students settle into their residence halls, open bank accounts, apply for mobile phone services, explore campus, and learn about the Granville and Columbus communities. Our student Global Ambassadors will meet you at the John Glenn International Airport (CMH) Welcome Center and assist you with making your way to campus.

Students coming from abroad have a few options for how they would like to begin their Denison experience,

and for each one they will be able to move in a couple of days early.

1. Participate in the English for Academic Purposes (EAP) Program from August 16 19, 2023. International arrival for this program is August 14 and 15, 2023.

2. Apply for one of Denison s Pre Orientation programs taking place from August 20 23, 2023. International arrival for the Pre Orientation participants is August 16 and 17, 2023.

3. Students not participating in the EAP program or a Denison Pre Orientation program should plan to arrive on campus on August 21 or 22, 2023.

Pre-Orientations

In addition to June-O and Aug-O, Denison ofers a wide variety of Pre-Orientation programs which will help you expand your horizons and connect with other frst-year students who share your interests and passions. Pre-Orientations provide students a unique, challenging, and enjoyable transition to life at Denison by forming bonds and friendships with other entering frst-years in a small group setting prior to the start of Aug-O. All Pre-Orientation programs take place of campus.

After May 15, applications will only be considered if the program has not reached its capacity. Participants will be notifed of acceptance in early June, or on a rolling basis if applying after the deadline. For all Pre-Orientation programs, you will move into your fall residence hall assignment early.

Programs

BIG RED CONNECTIONS

Connect with Denison alumni and explore key employers in Columbus! Through this program, you will explore the sights and sounds of the city, tour some of the top employers of Denison graduates, and make connections with fellow Denisonians. Alumni will share their favorite Denison experiences, how they spent their time on The Hill, including leadership roles and internships, and how they maximized their Denison experience to land their current jobs. Big Red Connections is sponsored by Denison’s Austin E. Knowlton Center for Career Exploration.

DENISON ART ORIENTATION (DAO)

Denison Art Orientation (DAO) explores the vibrant urban arts culture that only a big city can generate. Students will travel to Columbus, Ohio, with faculty, staf, and student leaders. Participants will work with local artists in workshops that include dance, art, music, and theatre. Some time is also spent touring museums, public art, and the city. DAO is not just for arts people — students who are energized by city life, interested in multicultural experiences, or like to think about how art can capture or change our experiences will have a great time.

DENISON BY DESIGN

Explore Columbus. Meet fellow Denisonians. Learn how to make the best of your Denison experience “by design.” Centered in downtown Columbus, this preorientation allows us to eat, sleep, and experience the possibilities our nearby metropolitan city ofers. We’ll share in a few design workshops that will have you sketching your many possible futures, exploring the entrepreneur inside of you, and designing experiences for others that will serve you well as you start to get involved on campus. Sponsored by Denison’s Red Frame Lab, we’ll prepare you to make the most of your Denison journey… by design.

DENISON CANOEING ORIENTATION (DCO)

Denison Canoeing Orientation (DCO) takes you out into the wilderness of Ohio for an unforgettable adventure. Students will take part in a wilderness, paddling, and camping experience. DCO is also an outdoor learning experience, designed to help students develop safe paddling skills, practice valuable skills in “Leave No Trace” camping, and learn about Ohio’s natural history and geography. The team will paddle canoes down the Mohican River and sleep at primitive campsites along its banks. DCO is a physically demanding trip that entails sustained paddling for most of each day. Previous canoeing experience is preferred.

DENISON OUTDOOR ORIENTATION (DOO)

Take part in a unique and challenging backpack hike through the wilds of the Otter Creek Wilderness Area of the Monongahela National Forest in West Virginia. Students will gather in groups of eight, each led by a faculty-student staf team, as they explore a beautiful and inspiring landscape of hills and forests. Spending time together during the three-day hike is a great opportunity to make new friends, learn more about Denison, and have a lot of fun.

1919

DENISON SERVICE ORIENTATION (DSO)

The Denison Service Orientation (DSO) is a directservice experience designed to help incoming students adjust to college, build strong friendships, and realize the possibilities available to them at Denison. Students will participate in a service experience related to homelessness and hunger in the surrounding Licking County area. Experienced student leaders and faculty/ staf leaders will guide participants through leadership training, group building, issues education, and directservice. Whether students have had previous service experience or not, this orientation is a great way to begin the transition to life at Denison.

LEADERSHAPE

The LeaderShape Institute challenges students to lead with integrity while working toward a vision grounded in your values. LeaderShape Institute participants will explore not only what you want to do, but who you want to be. Dynamic, challenging, and exciting, the LeaderShape Institute is intended to produce a breakthrough in your leadership capacity — benefting you individually, as well as your respective communities and the organizations in which you lead and serve. We are looking for students from a variety of backgrounds and a variety of leadership experiences. The LeaderShape Institute is open to any student interested in producing extraordinary results in a community while also developing a commitment to lead with integrity. This program is sponsored by Denison’s Alford Community Leadership and Involvement Center (CLIC).

PAVING THE WAY

Sponsored by The Center for Belonging & Inclusion, Paving the Way is in its 27th year. Although its primary focus is to assist traditionally underrepresented student populations in transitioning to the academic, cultural, and social climate at Denison, PTW encourages all entering students to participate in this program. Sessions will address holistic well-being, cultural and social identity development, personal development, and community building. NOTE: Paving the Way is free of charge to all participants.

Academics

23

Academic Advising

The Ofce of Advising promotes your progress toward timely completion of your degree and achievement of your academic and professional goals.

ACADEMIC ADVISORS

The Ofce of Advising is responsible for the assignment of entering students’ Academic Advisors and works with both students and faculty on academic advising concerns. Academic Advisors are an important resource for everything from scheduling classes, navigating a major, or preparing for a career after graduation. Academic Advisors assist students as they assemble their course work and co-curricular activities into a coherent liberal arts education tailored to their own needs and interests. Academic Advisors are assigned in the weeks following June-O.

Read Denison’s Statement on Advising

STUDENT SUPPORT

Many ofces on campus collaborate to support students, including the Ofce of Advising, the Academic Resource Center (ARC), Residential Communities & Housing, the Wellness Center, and the Ofce of FirstYear Experience.

ACCESSIBILITY AND DISABILITY SERVICES

Denison’s Academic Resource Center (ARC) coordinates a wide range of reasonable accommodations and auxiliary services for students with disabilities. Information about a disability shared with the Wellness Center must be shared separately with ARC out of respect for confdentiality of your information. When submitting documentation, please note that:

1. Documentation must be current (ideally within the past three years) and must be signed by the appropriate licensed professional (e.g., physician, psychologist, psychiatrist, learning specialist, etc.).

2. Documentation must include the date the test(s) was administered and the specifc battery of tests, including the results used in making the diagnosis(es). Specifc accommodations will be determined on a case-by-case basis. CLASS DEANS

Each class at Denison has a Class Dean. The First-Year Dean maintains a collaborative relationship with several ofces of the college, including the Ofce of Student Life, the Academic Resource Center (ARC), Residential Communities & Housing, First-Year Experience, the Wellness Center, and the Ofce of Advising. Class Deans are available throughout the year to meet with students on a wide range of issues, such as personal adjustment concerns and other issues related to navigating college life.

COURSE REGISTRATION

Entering students will register for fall semester classes as part of June Orientation with the assistance of a Faculty Advisor and a student Orientation Leader.

ADVISING CIRCLES

All entering students are strongly encouraged to sign up for an Advising Circle when they register for classes during June-O. Advising Circles are one-credit seminars, each limited to no more than 12 students and taught by a faculty member who will also serve as your Academic Advisor. This format creates the opportunity for academic advising to be even more structured and intentional. The reading and writing in these classes is minimal, allowing the focus to be on learning about Denison through engaged discussion with one another. Students are able to make connections while also better understanding their new community and their roles and responsibilities within it.

ACADEMIC FORMS IN YOUR ENROLLMENT CHECKLIST

ADVISING & ACADEMIC INTERESTS FORM

This form allows the Director of PHASE Advising to pair students with a faculty member for their June-O session. The 1 faculty member then uses the form to help you determine which courses you’d like to take during your frst semester.

MATH PLACEMENT ASSESSMENT

All students entering Denison complete the Math Placement Assessment prior to June-O even if they do not intend to take a math course while at Denison. This allows your Academic Advisor to know which course you should take if you ever register for a math course. This placement score follows the student throughout their time at Denison.

QUANTITATIVE REASONING ASSESSMENT

All students entering Denison will complete the Quantitative Reasoning Placement prior to June-O to see if they will be encouraged to take a foundational quantitative reasoning course.

LANGUAGE PLACEMENT ASSESSMENT

Denison has a series of core General PHASE Education Requirements (GEs) that all students need to complete in order to 2 graduate. Depending on how you plan to complete the Modern Languages GE requirement, the Enrollment Checklist will indicate whether you need to complete a Language Placement Assessment. If a student needs to complete the Language Placement Assessment, they will do so prior to June-O. This allows Academic Advisors to know what course students should take if they were to take a language course at Denison. This placement score follows the student throughout their time at Denison.

TUBERCULOSIS SCREENING

This electronic form helps students understand their risk for contracting tuberculosis, and determines whether further testing is required.

TUBERCULOSIS TESTING

International students are required to complete TB testing. Some domestic students will be required to submit TB testing as a result of prior medical history. The Wellness Center will notify you of this requirement by email.

IMMUNIZATIONS

The health and safety of the university community is our top priority, and Denison makes every efort to ensure that the university is as proactive as possible at protecting the health and well-being of our community. While the vaccination requirement alone cannot always stop outbreaks, the medical evidence shows that higher vaccination levels among a population lead to greater protection and less severe symptoms should an outbreak occur.

With this in mind, all students must complete Denison University vaccination requirements before the start of the student’s frst semester. The university selected the required vaccines based on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommendations, which the State of Ohio also follows for grades K-12. Additionally, Denison added the meningococcal conjugate (ACWY) vaccination for students who are new to residence halls because college students are at higher risk for the disease, particularly those living in dense living quarters such as residence halls.

PROOF OF COVID-19 IMMUNIZATION

All students are required to be fully vaccinated and, if eligible, to receive their booster for COVID-19. Upload proof of your COVID-19 vaccination to your My Wellness Portal.

PROOF OF INSURANCE

If you are planning to use 3rd party 5 PHASE insurance (e.g., parent’s insurance, Ohio Medicaid) during your time at Denison:

R Please upload a copy of the front and back of your insurance card to the My Wellness Portal.

R A NOTE IF YOU HAVE OUT-OF-STATE MEDICAID: Medicaid is partially funded by state taxes, therefore the money does not travel with you to other states. Keep in mind that if you have Out-of-State Medicaid (not Ohio), you will likely NOT have health coverage unless it is an emergency. Take into consideration that emergencies are defned very narrowly. This means that while in Ohio if you have Out-of-State Medicaid and you need anything like an annual dentist check-up, x-rays, lab work, a vaccine, a refll for a prescription medication, referral to a specialist, or new glasses you will not be covered. If you have Medicaid in another state, you should verify this according to your specifc plan.

If you are planning to purchase the optional Denison Student Health Insurance plan:

R There is no need to upload an insurance card. This requirement will be satisfed upon your purchase of Denison insurance. See more information in the Finances section of this guide (see page 41).

The Ann and Thomas Hoaglin Wellness Center staf is happy to help with any questions or concerns you may have when completing the wellness forms and requirements.
