SCREEN YOUR SKIN DSM Skin Care Contributor: Maria Fermin, @beautytipsbyml Photo by: Ken Howard, @k3images
You may think about sun protection only when you’re headed to the pool, for a hike, or a long day outside. Truth is, sun exposure happens every time you step outside whether or not you can see the sun peeking through. It only takes 10 minutes for the sun to penetrate and potentially cause damage, so applying sun protection before you leave the house to walk the dog, take a quick drive with your arm out the window, or head out for your first 14-er of the season is key to staying protected. Protect you and your families face, body, lips, and hair with specialized preventive formulas that easily spray on and are safe for kids or hydrating moisturizers that nourish and guard and against harmful rays.

SUCH A
TEES Written by: John Chapman IV, @johnchapmanthefourth Photos by: Kelsey Bigelow, @kelseybigelow
As we approach the warmer months of the year, t-shirts are a strong go-to item for every day, case, and situation. There is a right and wrong way to wear a t-shirt. Wearing a t-shirt to the office or just out and about through the town, you gotta do it the right way. First, buy t-shirts in the correct size. Too large and you’ll look un-even, shorter in height and peculiar. Too small doesn’t hang below the belt line, and suffocates the body, which will make you look uncomfortable. A shirt should be fitted in the bicep area, but still breathable to the body. Accessories will add fresh style and ease. A scarf added to the t-shirt equation adds a cool and confident aspect to an outfit. If you choose to go this route, make sure your scarf or handkerchief is lightweight and not too heavy for the warm weather. Wear it tied neat and casual or tuck it into the neck of the t-shirt so just a portion of the scarf is showing For a Friday at the office look, or just a calm, cool, evening date night, a t-shirt and suit will always be classic. Keep it simple with an accent or two of color pop. Your suit itself has enough detail, therefore, the t-shirt doesn’t need to have a lot of colors, Make sure your suit is as well fitted and tailored, as your t-shirt. Tees from top to bottom:

SPINSTER SISTERS CO MEET THE SKIN SENSATIONALIST – KELLY PERKINS Photos by: Noah Berg Photography, @noahbergphotography Written by: Jordan Jackson, @denvershewrote Hair & Makeup by: Glamour Bar, @glamourbardenver
Sometimes you just have to bring matters into your own hands. At least that’s what Kelly Perkins, Founder and Chief Formulator of Spinster Sisters Co., believes. Crafting soap was never just a hobby, but instead a necessity for overall wellness and a healthier lifestyle. If you’ve attended a festival, shopped at a craft fair or browsed a local boutique, more than likely you’ve spotted the Spinster Sisters Co. brand. It’s the beautifully pressed packaging that houses natural and organic body butters, bath soaks, soaps, salves and more. The line has become infamous in Colorado, and rightly so. In a state of craft-made cravers, this logically created product goes above quality standard. In fact, the entire foundation for the first initial soap began with self-education and research. “I read an article in 1993 about Triclosan, and all the horrible things it is linked to, like heart disease, loss of muscle function, and stunted hormone regulation,” Perkins remarks. For those of you that aren’t up to speed with what Triclosan actually is, it’s a pesticide, in essence, used in approximately 75% of commercially produced soaps, toothpastes, and deodorants. It was because of this discovery that Perkins made the active decision to stop using products containing the ingredient, marking the starting point to a beautiful and wildly successful venture. Perkins began tinkering, creating, testing and gifting her handmade soap. Quickly, she realized she was onto something. Friends and family who had received the product began mentioning their own requests. New soap flavors and an extended line of products where among their wishes. The company grew as organically as the products themselves. Years down the road, Perkin decided to start setting up shop at local farmers markets, gaining absolute traction. After a number of wholesale orders made their way to her inbox, Spinster Sisters Co. was off and running. “It has been a wild ride, but so damn fun. I love what I do, I get to work with a group of amazing women every day, and I get to decide where we want to go from here, and what we want to do. It’s pretty awesome.”
“It has been a wild ride, but so damn fun.”
In Spinster Sisters Co.’s case, the sky’s the limit. Perkins sees an endless amount of growth options, particularly setting her sights on opening even more retail shops in the near future. “I can’t wait to open more storefronts, hopefully in extended areas, introduce more products (stay tuned to social media for updates!), and expand the brand name itself,” she raves. Coming full circle, Perkins always puts an emphasis on dedication to education. Visit Spinster Sisters Co. in person and Perkins herself or a member of the team will be more than happy to discuss cosmetics and importance of how we take care of our bodies. “People, now more than ever, want to know that what they are using on their skin is safe. We are so happy to have a savvy customer base.” A true testament to the fundamental of the brand and a signal as to why it’s become so madly popular. Find Spinster Sisters Co. at one of their three local boutiques and in over 500 locations nationwide or online at spinstersisters.com @spinstersistersco

Reporting and delivering the news today can be a delicate duty, but Colorado’s newscasters do it with poise, style, and a lot of time, humor. For CBS4’s Britt Moreno, Channel 9’s Kyle Clark, and Channel 7 Katie LaSalle, being in front of the camera is a daily job where what you wear actually makes a difference. The wardrobe they choose from is their own, and whether the information is encouraging, devastating, uplifting, or just plain boring, choosing the right jacket, dress, or necklace can take some careful thought and can sometimes be memorable. For Kyle Clark, host of Next with Kyle Clark, selecting the right jacket to deliver the devastation of the Aurora Shooting did not come easy. He still remembers the jacket he wore, and that it took months to feel comfortable enough to put it back on. “Clothes can sometimes be a memory of specific moments in news,” says the handsome blue eyed anchor. With over 100 jackets in his collection and the prestigious honor of Buzzfeed’s Top 5 Hottest News Anchors in the World, Kyle Clark makes getting dressed a story of interest. His watch, one of the first wristwatches approved for railroad workers, passed down three generations. (Prior to wristwatches, only pocket watches were approved to keep trains on time) Or, the jacket that ‘started it all’, the same jacket his grandpa wore to his dad’s graduation. “If you can wear stuff with meaning, than why not?” Austin native and newly engaged Britt Moreno made Colorado her home four years ago and she’s not looking back. The Emmy-Award winning reporters spirited compassion is felt through every newscast, and the Wednesday’s Child Foster Care advocate takes being in the spotlight seriously. Britt tackles tough to talk about stories with a polished demeanor and says that she learned from her dad that ‘a smile and good posture will give you confidence’. If the sun’s out, you’ll most likely find local weekend weather anchor, Katie LaSalle enjoying one of Denver’s fabulous patios. With a previous local programming job in Aspen, Katie, is well aware of Colorado’s changing weather and gives us a forecast that’s always bright with her smile. After a short time in Oregon, the recently returned journalist spends her time enjoying the outdoors with an energetic lifestyle full of activities that include hiking, yoga, and even ice skating. Whether you’re watching in the morning, evening, or weekend, Denver’s smart and chic local journalists’ share their personal style stories with us daily.
Kyle Clark, Evening Anchor, 9News and Next with Kyle Clark, @kyleclark9news Kyle Clark doesn’t believe in extraneous clothes to choose from, he generally gets rid of items he doesn’t wear, and takes pride in what he keeps. Including this Vintage Rockmount Hops Shirt, featuring custom embroidery, shotgun sleeves, and smiling pockets. The home-brewer, self-proclaimed beer geek and dad to pup Porter doesn’t take his style too seriously, but will always wear items of interest.
Katie LaSalle, Weather and News Anchor ABC Denver7, @katie_lasalle Katie’s easy going positive approach to weather is mimicked in her free-spirited, down to earth style. The active anchor’s wardrobe includes feminine dresses with simple details to high performance lifestyle wear that takes her to some of Colorado’s most pristine sights. The world-traveled Katie, tends to choose a palette that is bright, cheery, flattering, but most of all, comfortable.
Britt Moreno, Morning Anchor, CBS4, @brittkmoreno Britt’s on and off-air looks include fit and flared frocks that that flawlessly hug her petite frame donned with heels that have a little extra height. The bride-to-be’s favorite accessory is her locally designed engagement ring that sparkles and stuns from across any room and credits her stand-up straight posture to years dancing before sitting at a news desk.

A DENVER STYLE SHOPCATION
DURANGO Written and Photos by: Kelsey Bigelow, @kelseybigelow
Drive From Denver: 6 Hours, 336 Miles
Less ski town, more history stop, Durango is an unusual mountain town, full of hidden shopping treasures, stellar food and surprising sites. Tucked in the San Juan Mountains lies the small college town of Durango. About 30 minutes from the Colorado / New Mexico state line, Durango shares more in common culturally with the southwest than with other Colorado mountain towns. This area is the site of numerous Native American ruins, petroglyphs and cliff dwellings like Mesa Verde,
home to the Ancestral Puebloans. It’s also home to outdoor adventures like rafting down the Animas River, mountain biking or hiking with trails at every turn. The drive from Denver to Durango will take you along two lane highways over mountain passes and through rural ranch lands.
Stop at the Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve for a stretch. If you’re looking for a relaxing dip, we suggest checking out the Mt. Princeton Hot Springs outside of Buena Vista or a stop at Pagosa Springs. You can elect to take the Million Dollar Highway on the San Juan Skyway into town for unimaginable views of the San Juans. Be warned - this
27
drive has been named one of the “World’s Most Dangerous Drives” by USA Today. Once you arrive in town, stretch your legs along Main St., visit Fort Lewis College for breathtaking views of Durango and it’s surrounding or head up into the canyons and back in time.
SHOP Spaaah Shop & Day Spa:
Antlers on the Creek Bed & Breakfast
S TAY
934 Main Ave. @spaaahshopanddayspa If you need to unwind from life’s stressors, the Spaaah offers full day treatment packages for just $215. This spa/beauty shop also sells beauty product favorites like Bare Minerals and features the only blowout bar in Durango. Check out their selection of locally made candles and soaps, which smell divine.
801 Main Ave. @silksparrow This boutique carries pieces that are priced for even a college student’s budget. Right next door to Lively Boutique, all items are under $85. The boho styles here are suited for a warm summer’s night spent on a patio or an afternoon party. They also carry an eclectic selection of affordable shoes.
Dolce:
835 Main Ave. @dolce_boutique_durango There’s something here for every member of your girl gang, no matter size, style or budget. Pieces start at just $20 and nothing’s over $100. Recently, Dolce left their home of four years and moved to a larger location directly on Main St. which let them expand their size selection, now offering up to a size 18.
Antlers on the Creek Bed & Breakfast:
999 Lightner Creek Road @antlersdurango This bed and breakfast feels worlds away but is tucked just four miles outside of town. Take it easy outside on the wide open deck next to a roaring fire with a great read or enjoy a glass of complimentary wine during the nightly Happy Hour. Pamper yourself with a pick off the Pillow Menu for a relaxing night’s rest. You’ll be ready for a busy day of sightseeing when you wake with a multi-course, fresh and flavorful breakfast from Chef Kurtis. Make sure you grab a freshly baked cookie or two for the road.
Silk Sparrow:
Carver Brewing:
1022 Main Ave. @carverbrewing A Bakery turned brewery, this is the 2nd oldest microbrewery in the state. (They lost out to Hickenlooper because of some misfiled paperwork.) They’re still popular for their breads at breakfast, including a biscuit bread bowl. However, we enjoyed a stop here for dinner. Normal brew pub favorites can be expected but are elevated with fresh ingredients from the Carver Farm. Try one of their famous IPAs; the citrus flavors and light body will convert even the most finicky beer drinker.
Oscar’s Cafe:
18 Town Plaza Located off Main St. in an unassuming shopping center, this 50’s style diner makes everything fresh and from scratch. If you have a sweet tooth, you’re in luck. Their cinnamon rolls and pies will hit the spot. Or cool off after a bike around town with a handmade milk shake. If you’re hungry, a sky high “Oscar’s Fan Club” or burger will satisfy any appetite before you get on the road for your next adventure.
SPAAAH SHOP & DAY SPA
Animas Trading Company:
1015 Main Ave. @animastradingco A local favorite, this affordable gift and clothing shop deals in unique finds for free spirited travelers. Owner Cathy Wakeman travels to Thailand once a year to stock the boutique and you’ll find items here that you won’t find elsewhere. If you can’t make it into the shop, find them on the road this summer at Telluride’s Ride festival or the Palisade Bluegrass festival. TIMBLE HOT SPRINGS
SEE Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad:
479 Main Ave. @dsngrr You’ll need to set aside an entire day to take this winding 45 mile long ride along the Animas River. Originally, this rail line was built to move ore from the mines and transport passengers to steep mining towns like Silverton. Today’s trains are from the 1920s and are maintained in original condition. Choose the open air car option for stunning views of the mountains as you ride.
Urban Market:
865 Main Ave. @urbanmarketdurango This one stop shop has a gift for anyone you know from hanging planters to trinkets for a home bar. Head next door and up the stairs of the historic Gardenswartz building for their newly reopened furniture shop and design center.
Lively Boutique:
809 Main Ave. Shop here for chic activewear that fits any outdoor adventure you have planned while you’re in town. Clothing here is affordable and thoughtfully curated. They also offer a free instore yoga class from The Sweaty Buddha every Friday morning, no matter the season.
Trimble Hot Springs: 6475 County Road 203 The first Trimble Hot Springs was built in 1882 and, since that time, has seen many different owners, hotels of varying size on site and celebrity visitors. Currently, the hot springs have an Olympic sized pool perfect for families heated to 82° and a smaller natural water pool that can get up to 104°. Get there early, grab a spot on the lawn and spend the day soaking. LIVELY BOUTIQUE
BLU BOUTIQUE
Blu Boutique:
651 Main Ave. @bluboutiques Here, you’ll find unique upscale boho statement pieces and designer denim. These are pieces made for someone with an adventurous style. If you’re getting a strong urge to run to the beach after your visit, it might be because they have a sister store in Cabo San Lucas.

CANNED GOODS MEET THE TIN TINKERER – THOMAS ALTHAUS Photos by: Noah Berg Photography, @noahbergphotography Written by: Jordan Jackson, @denvershewrote
When Thomas Althaus created a tenth year anniversary gift for his wife, he never could guessed that a creative life endeavor was just about to unfold. CANNED GOODS is an authentic, industrial lineup of earrings, bracelets, wallet clips, necklaces and beyond, made of simple tin cans. Each design is uniquely handcrafted for a stylish and sophisticated consumer. But back to its conception - CANNED GOODS started following a no-gift policy created by Althaus and his wife in order to save money for travel adventures. In true maker fashion, Althaus researched the occasion’s traditional element and composed a concept. Using tools from the garage and a little bit of imagination, a statement pair earrings with a coordinating bracelet was brought to fruition. The tin can turned en vogue quickly caught speed. His wife adored the present. Her friends took notice as well. Within no time at all, bantering of a new business began between the pair. So how does an average person make the shift to designer, maker and retail start-up entrepreneur? Althaus just so happens to be a small town Illinois native. Growing up in a farming community gave him the opportunity to work with his hands. “I was around different types of equipment growing up. I had the basic knowledge of how to work with metal and tools.” Pair this humble beginning with a fashion forward mother, and you’re left with a uniquely talented skillset. “My older brother took a lot of the workload. I was younger so I was able to hang out with Mom and shop with her in Chicago.” The experience resulted in a one-of-a-kind businessperson, drawn to aesthetically please designs, neatly partnered with the talents to create. While building the company, Althaus notes that there were a number of “AHA” moments. The first being when he pitched the idea to their original retail partner and landed a 100-piece contract. Another moment? When CANNED GOODS did their very first market and successfully honed the company’s story. “Something really clicked during realization that people loved to hear about our beginning. As we do more events, we’ve had a lot of repeat customers, which is the ultimate compliment. We also have customers who have heard about us from friends, and other customers repeating our mission. That feels good.” In addition, Althaus also beams with pride when highlighting moments such as CANNED GOODS first appearance on a red carpet for a major movie premiere. And, of course, the company’s give back program. For each item purchased, CANNED GOODS will donate a can of food to charity. “It’s an incredible feeling to deliver cans of food for our CAN DO GOOD program to organizations that do so much for the community. It’s so special. Each of these experiences give reassurance of our business direction, momentum, and how we CAN DO GOOD together.” The products are available for purchase online or picked up locally at a number of storefront and tradeshows. In particular, you’ll note CANNED GOODS massively impressive staging at Denver events such as Flea. Althaus transforms the space into a different world, noting that this is all a part of his branding strategy. He hopes to evoke a feeling inspired by a raw but refined lifestyle. Even as CANNED GOODS keeps grooving in a great direction, there’s always room for more. The brand is determined to remain hungry for opportunities in design, noting that their spirit will be forever young and courageous. They are currently working on a strategy to make all of their beautiful pieces easily accessible to more shoppers. “We are in an exciting stage of growth, opportunity and challenge. We feel confident about our image, story and product. It’s now time to formulate the best method to broadcast all of those integral elements to the masses. We want to help people feel good, look good, and do good wearing their CANNED GOODS.” Shop Canned Goods online at cannedgoods.net or @cannedgoodsco

WHEN YOU’RE FEELING STUMPED IN THE FASHION DEPARTMENT, WHERE CAN YOU GO TO FIND A DOSE OF INSPIRATION? WHEN YOU’RE STRUGGLING TO GET CREATIVE FOR THAT DINNER PARTY YOU’RE THROWING NEXT WEEK, WHERE CAN YOU FIND A KICK-ASS RECIPE? WHEN YOU FEEL ALONE IN A SEA OF STRANGERS, WHERE CAN YOU FIND A CONNECTION - A FRIEND? 32
@griermountain
The correct answer is blogs. In today’s society, you can find a blog for nearly every topic of interest. Due to the ever-present world of social media, it’s almost hard to not stumble across blogs here and there that spark your interest. A photo catches your eye, you instinctively follow their Instagram account, and there you have it. You’re hooked. A continuous cycle brought on by us, the readers, that allows these passionate individuals an outlet for creativity. Blogs generally consist of a well-thought out website, flawless photographs, up-todate social media, and sometimes, even events. What’s a little less obvious, is the time, money and effort put in by the single human running the entire operation. Through the eye of the lens, it all appears effortless. So, what keeps these bloggers afloat? After surveying and interviewing a sample of local bloggers, it became evident that the business of blogging isn’t cut and dry. For instance, it may appear as if bloggers don’t have day jobs, or other responsibilities weighing on their shoulders. Wrong. Only 25 percent of our surveyed bloggers work on their pages full time, and only 50 percent of these blogs are actually registered businesses.
@shesnotsobasic
Time for the real question. If that’s the case, how in the world do bloggers make money? Although the most common answer was paid advertising, we were able to uncovered some other creative methods. Michelle Paige of She’s Not So Basic launched her blog’s website in February 2017, and has already integrated her passion as a stylist as a business tactic. She offers a Skype consultation, and variety of packages ranging from one to four hours of styling assistance. “The beautiful thing with styling, is since so many clothing companies ship for free or have digital stores today, it only makes sense to hire a digital stylist to help pull clothes from outside of your local area,” said Page. Local food and travel blogger, Lauren Grier of Climbing Grier Mountain, has her own set of strategies up her sleeve. With a background in finance and seven years of blogging under her belt, she has established an impressive range of partnership opportunities. “My financial background always screams ‘diversify.’ Beyond just recipe development there are brand ambassadorships, food making videos, sharing on Instagram, ads, etc that make up other portions of the financial pie,” said Grier.
@griermountain
Statistically speaking, every blog falls into its own category. Whether a blogger works full-time or part-time, has 800 Instagram followers or 8,000, makes a living from their site or just enough to grab a cup of coffee, there is one thing they all do have in common. They are all part of the same community. A community of driven creatives who sacrifice their time and energy to connect with you.
@shesnotsobasic
“My financial background always screams ‘diversify.’” - Lauren Grier
BEYOND THE BLOG Michelle Paige - She’s Not So Basic @shesnotsobasic Launched in February 2017 10,300+ Instagram Followers “The goal with She’s Not So Basic is to inspire other women to be unapologetically true to themselves. I hope to share with the world the freedom that comes with blocking out the noise and just being yourself.” Michelle Paige, founder of She’s not so basic, always felt a bit off beat. After moving across the country to Colorado, she held on to this feeling, struggling to find a sense of self-acceptance. Instead of falling down, she stood up and decided to embrace who she is. Blogging became her outlet, allowing her to make connections with like-minded women, and express herself through fashion. Since launching her site in February 2017, she has integrated styling services into her blog, and hopes to eventually offer an ecourse. Her long term goal is to transition into a full-time blogger. Who is Michelle Paige now? She’s anything but basic.
Lauren Grier - Climbing Grier Mountain @griermountain Launched in 2010 8,600 Instagram Followers “I am passionate about blogging because it feeds my entrepreneurial and creative spirit.” After seven years of blogging, Lauren Grier was finally able to ditch the 9-5 and transition into blogging full-time (not to mention, she was also writing a manuscript for her first cookbook!). Her previous career in the financial industry was just the foundation she needed to make Climbing Grier Mountain not only a successful blog, but business as well. In addition to working 50+ hours a week on her blog, her family owns and operates two restaurants in Manhattan, Kansas. Her bountiful experience in the food industry, background in finance and driven personality have allowed her to make a living doing what she loves.

VANESSA BARCUS Written By: Brittany Rowan, @vodkaandbirthdaycake Photos by: Danielle Webster, @daniellewebsterphotography Shot on Location at Hudson Hill, @hudsonhilldenver
Vanessa Barcus seems more like an artist than a fashion boutique owner, but if you’ve been into her store, Goldyn, you know she is much more than someone who simply sells the season’s latest pieces; she’s a savvy business woman, artist, curator, and supporter of small designers. Goldyn is part gallery, featuring and selling local art, and part boutique, offering quality clothing and jewelry that, as of Fall 2017, will only come from small, independent designers. BR: How would you describe Goldyn’s Style? VB: Investment Casual Pieces BR: Where are your designers from? VB: The vast majority of our designers are out of New York, quite a few out of LA, Seattle, Atlanta; a lot of local designers as well. BR: Do you support strictly domestic designers? VB: I’m weary of the whole “USA only” thing, because there’s beautifully made things that are ethically made outside of the US as well. Several of our designers work with women’s sewing collectives, like Mara Hoffman. [who] changed her production to only be with sustainable, ethical production. I think her line had sort of gotten away from who she is as a person and so she brought it back. That’s why we want to support her. BR: You have a lot of really cool jewelry in your store; where does that all come from? VB: Little known fact, we sell more jewelry than clothing. It can be neck and neck sometimes, but we have so much jewelry and have such a range. BR: How do you choose what you’re buying for future seasons? VB: I’m always paying attention when I’m traveling and when I’m shopping. I read tons of blogs. I get a million emails a day from designers and we work with some of the best showrooms in New York so they send me new lines they are picking up. On my phone is a running list of who I want to look at come next market. BR: How would you describe Denver style? VB: Comfort and versatility are key here. Obviously, Denver is known for being super active, so things here need to be able to transition from being active to evening. What I’ve been pleasantly surprised by is that doesn’t mean that Denver isn’t fashion forward. We can sell stuff right out of the gate that is coming off the runways, as long as it’s casual, comfortable, and versatile. That’s the key. BR: Who inspires you? VB: I don’t watch TV or care about celebrities at all, but there are a few cool girls who I am more interested in…Solange is amazing, Miranda July has really cool style, Jenny Lewis from Nice as Fuck. I love her style. They kind of have a girl gang going on in New York and they’re really cute. Also, Bjork, Tennessee Thomas, Mia Moretti, and Marina Abramovic. BR: What is a typically Denver weekend for you? VB: There are so many events happening in this city now, it’s crazy. I Most weekends I am going to some kind of work related event, whether that’s a fashion show or some friend’s art opening, and then I’m usually going to a concert and then I’m trying to balance that out with some kind of down time like doing yoga or going on a hike, getting into nature. I guess I’m pretty cliché Denver in that way. BR: What has been the most rewarding part of being a business owner? VB: [...]being a part of creating this fashion community in Denver and supporting all these small artists who are just getting started and mentoring them and that’s fulfilling. BR: What do you want people to know about Goldyn? VB: I want people to know that we’re not intimidating. Yes we’re a higher price point, but I welcome everybody to come in and have fun, and we just want people to be able to express themselves and really what we do is help women of all shapes, ages, sizes, and walks of life feel good about themselves and feel they can express who they truly are. We’re not just about everybody trying to fit into one size or clone a supermodel or anything, that’s not what we’re about. Shop Goldyn at 2040 W. 30th Ave. or www.shopgoldyn.com
