The hottest days of the year are behind us. Autumn marks the return to a reality of routine. Warm nights spent on patios and lazy days of hammocks and pool parties are replaced with school bells, sports, and time spent indoors. Cooling caftans and sandals are replaced with cozy cardigans and booties.
With the temperatures cooling, now is the time for fashion play.
Our growing selection of boutiques and designers makes it easy to fall in love over and over with the perfect pieces to complete your fall wardrobe. Take a few cues from our two featured editorials and pile on the layers, mix and match patterns and prints or add dimension and depth with textured pieces, like wool, leather and lace. Add a little or a lot; we have pieces that fit as daring as you want to be and match every budgetary need. Every day is an excuse to test something new. Did you notice something different about this letter? There’s two of us represented here! Denver Style Magazine has always been built on collaboration, especially within our fantastic team. Every member of the Denver Style Magazine family holds specific titles We met as bloggers and share a passion for growing the retail industry within our state lines and further establishing Denver as the new home for American style. MEET THE PHOTO CHAMELEON
NOAH BERG Written by Dustyn Deerman
@dustdee
Noah Berg has been described as someone who can truly be placed in any situation and thrive. A photographer and entrepreneur, Noah has a quality about him that people want more of. His high energy, lovable personality, and raw talent make him stand out among his peers. What started as a series of helping fashion bloggers take quality photos for their sites, Noah found himself photographing around the clock. As someone who may have taken a little while to find his calling, Noah has a drive inside him that keeps him moving forward with it. “My whole life I’d start and quit areas of interest like nobody’s business. I’ve tried a lot of things; I’ve been a tap dancer, cellist, musician, painter, and held many different jobs but this was the thing for me. I do not see any end.” he explains.
Noah creates an aesthetic in his photography to match what his clients are looking for. He always puts his personal touch on it, but above all when he’s working with someone he wants them to be happy with the end result. When you look at his photos you’ll notice how clean they are. He’s truly smooth with his camera, and keeps the rest of the process uncomplicated. He also likes to keep his personal style simplistic, “I’d rather know what I’m going to wear every day than have to guess. I really enjoy seeing what other people put together in their style though.” He jokes on most days you’ll likely catch him in just a regular a v-neck sweater or t- shirt and khakis.
“I can’t imagine not being a photographer.”
When it comes to working with fashion in Denver, Noah has been so impressed by the industry in the city. “Denver is such a great place for fashion because everyone just wants to help each other, it’s really great,” he says. He enjoys the fact that the people here all have such individual styles, and the confidence to pull it off.
— 07 —
Another big inspiration for him is his wife and new beautiful daughter. Along with the number of fashion shoots Noah photographs, he also focuses much of his effort on commercial work and weddings. There’s a good chance you’ve come across his work and didn’t realize it! Don’t be surprised to see even more of him in the near future, he’s currently working on starting a marketing and branding company with friend and fellow photographer Amanda Graus from ATP Creative (@atpcreative).
Noah Berg Photography www.noahbergphotography.com @noahbergphotography
Through all of his hard work, Noah says his biggest rewards are when his clients are as excited for their photos as he is. He plans to continue working with people in the fashion industry, and is really excited to get his new ventureoff the ground. If his success in photography is any indication, we can’t wait to see what he does with his next project.
MEET THE INVENTOR OF DREAMS
BRITNI JENSEN Written by Dustyn Deerman
@dustdee
Meet one of Denver’s most notable entrepreneurs, Britni Jensen, CEO of the utterly successful boutique, Inspyre. Britni, as with most in her position, wears a number of hats -- she works in the shop’s warehouse, runs countless meetings, and always takes the opportunity to go on a fun buying trip. “We currently have 5 locations as well as a fashion truck, so there is never a dull day!” Britni says. We don’t doubt that either! Britni has been in the fashion industry since she was 16 years old. Holding down a job in a retail store, she was able to work out a buying position, where she not only learned an incredible amount but also began on the exciting journey of eventually owning her own boutique. She kept up her work while she pursued her MBA, and shortly after receiving her degree, Inspyre Boutique was born. Inspyre’s namesake comes from Britni’s desire to be inspired daily and to provide her own influence for other people in the industry. and Ilove overhearing customers get so excited about a new look or new item that they adore,” she says.
“I love the creativity this business allows and welcomes, I love going into the stores and seeing the amazing work of our brilliant team...”
Born and bred here in Colorado, Britni truly loves her roots. She tells us she is definitely not going anywhere anytime soon, “I love Denver and all it has to offer at any time of the year!” She loves how judgement-free Denver is, that anyone can have any taste in style they want, and no one will ever make them feel awkward or poorly about their outfit choice. Even more, Britni says she’s always so pleasantly surprised by the fashion industry here in Denver. She enjoys the fact it’s always evolving-- that in itself is an inspiration for her and the direction her boutique is moving in. Britni has found incredible success with Inspyre. From the sheer amount of locations to the reality that people look to her to help form their wardrobes and pick up the latest trending item, she truly has become the inspiration she wanted to be to so many people. This success didn’t come to her overnight. The greatest advice she can give anyone looking to get into the fashion industry is opening yourself up for questions and truly absorbing what you learn. She’s worked incredibly hard to get where she is today. We all can take inspiration in that, and while doing so, really appreciate the name of her boutique.
Shop at one of Inspyre’s five locations at Tennyson St, Southwest Plaza, Boulder, Cherry Creek and Park Meadows or discover their mobile truck. Inspyre Boutique www.inspyreboutique.com @inspyreboutique
MEET THE MAKEUP MAVEN
JO VU
Written by Dustyn Deerman Salon Joa www.salonjoa.com
“Be you, only better” is the mantra Jo Vu lives by, both in her personal life and when she’s working her magic at Salon Joa. As a makeup artist and entrepreneur Jo, along with her husband Hoa, is working everyday to help her clients feel beautiful when they leave her salon. Growing up here in Denver, Jo wasn’t allowed to wear makeup, but her passion for it was already alive. She says she would sneak away and do makeup in her room, trying to mimic makeup ads in her favorite magazines. She didn’t stop there. Soon she was practicing on her friends and building a portfolio that immediately got her some attention.
— 09 —
Jo soon realized she wanted to take things to the next level, and opening a salon was the next step. Salon Joa almost didn’t happen though. “Even though Hoa and I have been working in the beauty service industry most of our lives, we were actually looking into opening a restaurant,” she tells us, “The thought of it was very scary and I kept praying for a sign that we were doing was the right thing. “ She got that sign she had been asking for and they changed their business plan to Salon Joa. She says it was the best business decision of their lives so far! Jo decided to take things even further when she started her own makeup line. As you do when building something from the ground up, you start with a foundation (in this case we’re talking about makeup!) She received incredible responses from her clients, and that gave her the confidence to keep going. Today, she offers a full line of cosmetics, all of which are hypo-allergenic, paraben and fragrance free, and non-comedogenic. “It’s very important to me that all of the products were high performance, lasted all day and felt great on. There’s a long lasting lip cream that stays on for over 12 hours! Clients have trouble taking it off sometimes!”
@dustdee
@salonjoa
While Jo truly is a jack-of-all-trades in the beauty industry, her specialties are eyes and brows. She loves enhancing her client’s eyes, making them brighter and even more beautiful. Still, all of it is incredibly rewarding for her, “The reason why I love doing makeup truly is because I love how I can make someone feel so beautiful. I love it when you can see someone’s self confidence go up!” she says,
“Even though the makeup may wash off at the end of the day, there’s a part of me that really hopes my clients realizes how beautiful she really is still.”” Jo appreciates how unique every person is here in Denver. She enjoys getting to see all of her client’s individual styles; she loves the fact she and the rest of us get to express ourselves not only with our clothing, but how we choose to style our hair, our makeup, and nails. When you walk into Salon Joa, you aren’t just walking into a modern, contemporary, clean, and inviting business, you’re walking into a place where everyone is welcome, and guaranteed to receive the most professional services, no matter who’s chair you sit in. Jo is super excited for the future of Salon Joa, and is working hard with her husband and their team to make it a household name. Everyday they’re getting better at what they do and continue to not only bring the best out of all their clients, but themselves too. Together, they are working to make Joa a salon everyone loves and trusts. “We absolutely love it when clients bring in their entire family. We love giving a baby their first cut, a husband his first pedicure, and a wife’s first makeup session.”
MEET THE EMPIRE STARTERS
TAYLOR & BECCA ROMERO Written by Dustyn Deerman
@dustdee
Becca & Taylor Romero, Spruce www.spruce.me
Denver’s own dream team power couple, Becca and Taylor Romero, are the proud curators of fine grooming products, services, style consultancy, and fashionable garbs for men. What you’re probably thinking is, “What a good idea!” Well, you’re right, and these two have beat everyone to the punch with founding and creating Spruce [For Men]. The idea to open a men’s boutique and barbershop was Becca’s. She wanted to do something that could be a creative outlet for her, while providing an awesome service and creating a bigger impact. After seeing the diamond-in- the-rough potential of one of Taylor’s co-workers, and realized men are very underserved in the fashion and grooming industries. “Sometimes they need someone to take them under their wing to make sartorial changes,” Becca says. And that’s exactly what happens when an appointment is booked at Spruce: a complete head-to-toe transformation and experience. But Becca does give a tip, “To make that experience the best,
“You have to own the whole process.”
The Spruce team work to make their clients walk out of their boutique feeling inspired and confident. Spruce carries “elevated casual” menswear and accessories. They like to offer pieces that can transition effortlessly from work to dinner downtown. There’s lots of versatile basics that can be mixed and matched to help supplement a guy’s wardrobe. While it’s definitely all business around Spruce, they still like to have fun with some eccentric pieces too. Along with the awesome products available, Spruce’s clients can book with a Spruce Wingman whose sole responsibility is to make them look their best from the neck down. They also have barbers who offer haircuts, traditional straight razor shaves, and eyebrow waxes (you know, from the neck up). Spruce marries classic with modern. They have restored mid-century furniture right alongside a custom-built video gaming system and iPads in the fitting rooms to adjust lighting. Similarly, they offer straight-razor shaves like your grandfather used to get, but also keep their finger on the pulse of what’s trending in hairstyles and grooming products and stylish men’s trends. Ultimately, Becca and Taylor love when someone gets the full Spruce experience. They live for the opportunity to help someone completely transition themselves into another version of themselves they really love. They also appreciate the very unique way men in Denver dress.
“Denverites love blending form with function.”
“Your outfit has to be able to accommodate riding a bike to work with Mother Nature’s mood swings. That means lots of layering, comfortable (but stylish) shoes, and bags that are water-resistant,” Becca explains. Becca points out that men love getting pampered more than they are willing to admit! “There has been a stigma for a long time that men shouldn’t put too much time or pride into their appearances, but that tide is turning. They are realizing that when they look good, they feel good, and that can be the catalyst they need to make other changes in their lives.” We won’t be surprised to see more locations open up and even more men sporting the ‘Spruce’ look we love.
