MEET THE STORY TELLER

MARGOT ELENA

— 07 —

Written by Dustyn Deerman

@dustdee

Storytelling -- conveying a message through means of vocals, theatrics, embellishments, or in this particular instance, through design and creation. Meet Margot Elena, Founder and Chief Creative Officer of Margot Elena Companies and collections, and the ultimate story teller. As a Brand Author of several cult classic, independent beauty brands like Lollia, TokyoMilk, Library of Flowers, and Love & Toast, you surely have not only come across her many perfumes, soaps, and creams, but you’ve been inspired to purchase them because of the story that spoke to you in her design and small details.

In telling stories with her products and their design, Elena gets to create something where nothing exists; everything is inspiration in what she does. “You, quite literally, are just following a dream and watching it manifest in the physical world… that is intoxicating,” she says, “having the incredible opportunity to be creative everyday, it is inherent in the role that there is literally no end to inspiration!” She uses everything and anything in front of her as a beginning point to jump off from. The thrill of that leap is what continues to motivate her, that and the amazing team she gets to work with everyday.

Elena has been creating brands and retailing products from a very early age, Starting in about 3rd grade. Once she got to junior high and high school, she started creating, making and selling products, including an underground newspaper and hand-painted apparel and shoes in stores on Broadway. So, if you were strolling and perusing shops down there during the 80’s, chances are you were encountering her products back then! Needless to say, Elena has been non-stop for essentially her entire life, always moving forward, “Looking back on it, designing, creating, and starting my own beauty company was a completely natural progression.”

Elena starts with a feeling or a concept as she embarks on her next story, brand or product. It can often time be an image, a song, or a name that will inspire and create influence in the voice that it will have, and how strong it will be.

“It seems, in retrospect, there has never been a time that I have not been moving towards owning my own fashion or beauty company.” Elena was one of the first to offer all-natural soap bars in the country when she opened her first store. Even then, it was all about the details when she’d wrap up the bars in kraft tissues and decorate them with dried flowers. They were such a success she remembers people lining up outside her shop to get custom-blended perfumes, bath oils, and her soaps around Christmas time. As a leader in the industry with creating and offering artisanal, handcrafted goods, Elena has enjoyed watching the marketing cycle grow from its infancy to where it is today. She was at the forefront of launching some of the first independent perfumes in the industry in Anthropologie (her Lollia line is still sold there, that’s where this writer first discovered them and picked up her current favorite perfume, for real.)

Tokyo Milk is one of those brands that’s developed a strong voice for itself, and she loves hearing how people interpret that voice and how it contributes to their own story. She tells us she’ll event create “characters” as she creates these brands and the stories behind them. “One brand may be strong, sexy or even fantastical, like TokyoMilk, where another, like Lollia is feminine, romantic while being fresh and modern,” she explains. While it may surprise many that Elena runs her operation here in Denver, she’s seen it as the perfect “open space” that’s allowed for her more free thinking and creativity; she tells us it’s a secret advantage being here. She loves how eclectic of a mix we have going on here, that Denver is truly coming into its own stylistically, and that she’s a part of that. She describes it so well, “It’s not New York, it’s not LA, it is uniquely Denver and has a laid back style and well-travelled finish.” Elena, in her classic fashion, is very much so looking to what the future will bring for her. She sees innovation and most importantly, positive energy in front of her, And no matter what, she’ll always be sure to tell a story with her creations, “Keep your creations fresh so you are always in love with them,” she says. For her, keeping things fresh maintains relevancy, but love keeps her devoted. We really look forward to what stories will yield from that love and devotion she has. Ruffly Rose is a full service florist that offers custom flower bouquets for any occasion, plants for the home, and a wide assortment of gifts and sweet treats. I could have gotten lost in this place looking at everything, it was seriously all wonderfully intoxicating. This is the place to keep in mind for that next thoughtful ‘little something’.

This location offers everything else you could fill your home with! Their 3000 square feet shop is covered with quirky gifts, kitschy kitchenware, unique decor, peaceful plants, bohemian and worldly goods, and everything in between. Be sure to just start in one area and take your time; there’s a lot to see here and trust me, you’ll want to take all of it home with you.

Snack & Sip Here STELLA’S COFFEE HAUS 1476 South Pearl Street @stellascoffeehaus Stella’s has been a fixture in the neighborhood since the early 90’s. Offering a super comfortable, laid-back atmosphere, awesome lattes, and an incredibly friendly barista staff, it’s become a favorite place for a coffee meet-up. With six rooms decorated with a diverse collection of original artwork for sale, you may walk out with the latest addition to your decor. If you’re an artist looking to hang your pieces there, just simply talk to one of their baristas! IZAKAYA SUSHI DEN 1478 South Pearl Street

S. PEARL ST

Izakaya is the perfect place for a more upscale date night. Billing itself as a sake house with tapas, it focuses on global and Japanese dishes; don’t worry, you can still order sushi here! The entire experience here is a feast for both the eyes and the palette; the dishes they offer are beautifully constructed and taste delicious, but the restaurant itself is stunning. Sculptures, intricate design, and live plants can be seen from every corner; the mood is one of romance and sophistication.

KAOS PIZZERIA 1439 South Pearl Street As one of the businesses on South Pearl who transformed a home into a business, Kaos has created the perfect meeting of feeling at home while sitting in a pizzeria. Offering some of the best handmade, brick oven pizza you’ll try here in Denver and some of the city’s favorite local brews, you won’t want to give this place a miss on your next group outing. A favorite spot for me here was their patio in the back.

FOURTEEN SEVENTY-TWO 1472 South Pearl St. @restaurant1472 As someone who enjoys a good dive bar or pub, Fourteen Seventy-Two was an awesome find ending my day. With an open floor plan and outdoor seating, the place feels very welcoming. They have an awesome menu offering things like chicken and waffles and roasted tomato Caprese salad, but it was their drinks I was after. Don’t shy away from any of their mixed cocktails, their bartenders know what they’re doing over there.

STYLISH COMFORT FOR WINTER TRAVEL Bundle up in cute street-style inspired looks

Written by Penn Beldock

@galerisaphotog

Sweatshirts aren’t just for the gym or lounging around the house. Time to take the sweatshirt out on the road!

Now that you’ve got an easy outfit, here’s a few of my favorite teen travel tips to ensure the rest of our journey is just the same.

Easily match fall’s cozy weather staple with a cute pair of sequin shorts and some sassy boots and you’re ready for the next college town tour. Or top off a suede skirt with a sweatshirt and a button down underneath for an outfit that you can wear to your next family dinner.

PACK AS LIGHT AS POSSIBLE

Whether you are traveling alone or with your family, it’s up to you to haul around your stuff. You can’t be prepared for everything, so just make sure you have emergency money and the rest will work itself out. RESEARCH

There are plenty of affordable hostels or AirBnBs that are just as comfortable as pricey boutique hotels but at half the price. Bonus: The owners can give you some really great tips about exploring their home city. READ & WRITE

“Hollerado” Lightweight Hoodie $35, I Get Down Co.

Bring books or your e-reader as well as a journal to write down your travel stories for stimulating your brain while traveling and keeping track of your journey. MEET THE LOCALS

Talk to someone new along the way. It’s fun to try out your foreign language skills. Even if you aren’t fluent, people still appreciate you trying! GO WITH THE FLOW

Sometimes we overplan; make sure you have a day that has absolutely no plan. You might find that the best days are the ones you just let happen.

THE WINE COUNTRY INN 777 Stubb Ditch Rd. Palisade @coloradowinecountryinn

Start, end, and make a stop in the middle of your trip at the Warehouse. The family/date-night/music-venue/ game-watching/girlfriend meetup/event space...all-in-one concept was brilliantly created by sister duo Noel and Terri. With as much going on here as there is, no traveler will be left out when visiting. The reinvented flooring warehouse offers a beautifully executed menu of sharable snacks, full meals, and hand-muddled mules in a variety of spirits and mouth-watering flavors.

Make time to take your time at The Wine Country Inn. The complimentary tasting of private label wines upon arrival makes it a little easier to get into the mindset of taking things a little slower. The rooms provide a comfortable retreat from a day full of tastings, outdoor adventures, and the hot breakfast provided in the morning is the perfect base to begin your routine of relaxation.
