Looking for some of Denver’s best fashion pieces? You had better be checking out this city’s array of great consignment shops! Most people are at least somewhat familiar with the concept of consignment. While it is similar to thrift in the sense that the clothes and accessories have usually been owned by someone else before you buy them, the process of consignment is much more about the relationship between the seller and buyer (and you, the next buyer). The shop owner acquires pieces from the consignor (the previous owner), then prices them for sale according to original cost, quality, and condition.

A lovely thing about local businesses is that they thrive on word of mouth. I am always looking out for a new shop to explore, and when I mentioned to friends that I was hot to trot on consignment, one name kept popping up. I headed over to the much-mentioned Birds & Belles Boutique, and wouldn’t you know it? I fell in love. The owner, Kyla DeTienne, is an excellent curator of all things fabulous. Between a Marni couture capelet, a luxurious reversible faux fur, and a fun sequined bolero jacket, it was easy to see why Denver-ites frequent Kyla’s shop. The eclectic mix of high end, fast-fashion, and local pieces means there’s something for everyone at Birds & Belles. Kyla was kind enough to lend me a few things so I could demonstrate how you can seamlessly incorporate consignment finds into your winter wardrobe (and I bought a few for myself!).

LUCILLE’S TIPS TO CONSIGNMENT: Find the perfect pieces next time you shop.
Chat up the owner. Does the shop mostly receive high-end, designer items? Do they deal exclusively in vintage, and if so, what decades do they focus on? Since the owner usually decides what product comes into the store, a few friendly questions will help you know if that particular shop is likely to have things you’ll enjoy.
Fit is everything! Be sure to try on your finds before leaving the store, because many consignment shops have strict return policies. If it doesn’t fit the way you want, don’t buy it. It’s that simple.
Go bold! You usually don an edgy monochrome palette? Spring for a vintage petal pink coat. Don’t be afraid of the suede kitten heels you’ve been eyeing that are just your size. Consignment shops are a great place to pick up pieces you might normally shy away from, and chances are they’ll be at a price you’re more willing to pay. Pay it forward. You’ve got a great new piece that you love and that fits you amazingly, and by now you’re best friends with everyone at your local shop. Give selling a try! Make sure your items are clean and in good condition. Most places will either give you money or store credit; either way, your wallet will thank you.

Don’t throw out your summer pastels just yet - blush shades are emerging as this season’s hottest trend. Sophisticated and feminine, these blush hues are as refreshing as they are unexpected when it is snowing outside. Denver isn’t afraid of going against the norm, and this trend goes against almost all winter fashion logic. Looking to step up your wardrobe? Soft hues of blush, as seen in Gucci, Chanel, Ralph Lauren, create a fresh take on cold weather musts. For an elegant vibe, feature these blush tones with grey or camel- or go ultra glam by pairing it with a winter white. (No white after Labor day? Not anymore!) Stay modest by adding a blush scarf, or up the ante with pastel from head-to-toe. We prefer the latter- we’re all for going big. And no winter wardrobe is complete without a stand-out coat. Blush tones add a fresh take to this winter staple. And don’t worry about experimenting with different textiles — shearling, leather, knits — an over the top faux fur jacket in blush? Perfection.

THE “ORIGINAL SOCIAL NETWORK” The brothers, Joey and Louie, opened the shop five years ago with the intention to give men a place to go to get a fitting haircut. Their grandfather was a jack-of-all-trades barber and is one of the main inspirations behind the men, that the brothers grew up to be. Barbershops are described as “the original social network� and this one is no different. When you are here, be ready to talk or at least listen to constant witty banter. Within Denver’s diverse community is a hair trend that’s common with most women and a few men in our active city, ponytails. Here is an easy trick to dress up your ponytail for a quick routine change or night out.
1. Start by gathering hair into a sleek low ponytail and secure with elastic.
2. Separate hair right above the elastic in the middle with your fingers.
3. Flip ponytail and pull 3/4 way through the hole. Leave ‘tail’ portion out to cover your hair tie.

No 2 Shoot your best side. The easiest way to find which side of your face you find more appealing; look to the part in your hair. Naturally you will part your hair to the side of your face you find more appealing.
No 3 Lift the camera. When you shoot from a higher angle this will cause a ’foreshorting’ affect. This affect will make you look thinner because the closet thing to the camera appears the largest. In this case your face thus making your body look smaller.

SUPER MOM TIPS FOR THE SUPER STYLISH
Prep Everything in Advance If I’m heading out with my children, I try to get all their clothes set aside, snacks packed, and everything put in the car ahead of time before I get them. If I’m walking then I pull the stroller out, and have the sunscreen and diaper bag set aside. Despite this foresight, I typically still forget something and run around looking for it...usually my keys or sunglasses!
Double Duty In the event I need a blanket for Noe, I use an inexpensive pashmina. It’s simple, stylish and I can use it too!
Dress for Comfort Don’t get me wrong, I love my Lululemons as much as anyone, but if you want to avoid the stereotypical mom uniform, you’ve got to kick it up a notch. Skinny jeans (must have stretch!) and a tunic top look pulled together without sacrificing comfort. Avoid anything short or cropped as you’ll likely be bending, squatting and generally running after your kids. A vibrant jacket, simple flats or boots, and a hat are the perfect addition to pull your look together. Also, never underestimate the power of a great pair of sunglasses.

I love to encourage women every day that adding layers of jewelry is fun. Not only does it give your outfit a new look, but it adds character. Take a leap of faith and don’t be scared—you won’t like it until you try it. Here are some ways that you can style your pieces. In time, you will be able to play around on your own with lots of different looks! First, instead of layering necklaces around your neck, you can add it to your waist as a belt, or to your hat, or even to you boots. It would make your outfit pop, fresh, and bedazzled. This fun, unique outfit would look great at a girls night out, dinner date, or even out for some coffee. Trust me, while you are walking on the street, heads will turn. You can also style your accessories by adding a color to a specific piece, like a turquoise statement necklace, to a color you usually wear. The rest you can layer with you favorite jewelry. This will help you step out of your comfort zone; it might look very different than you originally expected. There is plenty more you can try out and experiment with over time. Have fun, don’t be shy, step out, and be bold!

Any successful partnership requires a delicate balance of give and take and trial and error. Bonus points if the partnership is made up of a duo of dreamers who share a common passion. When Kelsey Bigelow and Merida Teot met as college classmates, they instantly knew they shared a need to be creative and make a difference; they just didn’t know how they were going to do it. Fast forward a few years and the friends-turned-roommates added business partners to their list of credentials. Noticing a disconnect in the Denver fashion community and a void between designers and consumers
the quirky duo created an avenue to highlight Denver fashion creatives, empower local designers, elevate a sense of community, and position Denver as an emerging fashion hub.

“We were seeing some really talented designers and successful boutiques speckled throughout the Denver area, but no one was talking about them,” said Merida. “When we first came up with the idea of the blog, we were consistently told we needed to move to a fashion-forward city to be successful.” Denver’s fashion reputation was the initial drive behind the idea for Studio 9720. Placing their trust in local talent, the Colorado natives were determined to stay in Denver and work to make their vision for the industry a reality.

Studio 9720 features event coverage, interviews with designers, and profiles of boutiques. It also includes unique features, like the popular “Closet Raid” Series, in which Kelsey and Merida raid closets of fashionable bloggers and Denverites to showcase their style. Studio 9720 has no shortage of ideas for the future. “We are always thinking of ways to expand and have plans to pursue some non-blog projects,” said Kelsey. “Our overarching goal will always remain the same. We want to influence and promote the cohesive nature of the Denver fashion industry and help position this city as a talented fashion community that deserves to be taken seriously.” Since Studio 9720 was born over two years ago, they have already seen this change take form.

“We think Denver is on its way to being a city known for design and craftsmanship,” said Merida.
“THE PEOPLE WE MEET CONSTANTLY INSPIRE US AND ARE WORKING SO HARD TO PROPEL THIS CITY FORWARD.” Of course, there is more work to be done and Studio 9720 believes Denver is up for the challenge. “We need to come together and be united or we will fail before we succeed, “ said Kelsey. “The Denver fashion industry is built on community, not competition, which will be the key to moving forward.” Using Studio 9720 as a megaphone for community, encouragement, and collaboration, Kelsey and Merida are taking steps to weave the Denver fashion community together, one dreamer at a time.

It was my fourth meeting like this in half a year. I scanned the coffee shop looking for a young couple with plans to open a mobile boutique by the end of 2014. As we did when we first started, the pair had questions. Though in this business just under a year, as one half of Judith & Joe I’m one of the few in Denver with just enough knowledge to shed some light on a nearly unknown business model. You may have passed by

one of us and not even known it. Or maybe you’ve hopped on and been one of many to ask, half serious, if we’re going to kidnap you. Or perhaps you’re thinking of adding to the mobile boutique community yourself. You wouldn’t be alone. Established mobile boutiques get countless emails weekly inquiring about what it takes to shrink a store down to the size of a delivery truck. Though it’s unconventional there’s

something that just makes sense about style on the go. There’s a reason why mega fashion heroes Madewell, Buffalo Exchange, and Warby Parker have added mobile boutiques to their offerings. By the end of the year Colorado will boast at least 10 mobile boutiques from Pueblo to Denver with several more set to launch in 2015. Much like the explosive growth of food trucks, mobile boutiques are multi-

selling, styling, social media, inventory management, accounting, event planning, truck maintenance! Playing the jack of all trades can be exhausting to say the least. @lalovelyvintage Tara Dover has a unique knack for turning vintage into modern. With a mission to rescue and restore the finest vintage products in Colorado she not only scours the state for the best finds (yep, she’s the one first in line at Estate Sales!) but turns previously loved treasures into much more. Her line of soy candles in vintage tins and potted plants in, well just about anything, is one of her favorite parts of the shop. What started on Etsy in the fall of 2011 has turned into so much more in three short years. Knowing she wanted to branch out from the Internet, Tara opened her renovated (twice due to water damage) Shasta trailer affectionately named Lucy in the spring of 2013. Excitingly, her first storefront just opened in October! And though she’s gone indoors, she’s not quitting the mobile game, despite it’s off and on challenges. “The hardest part [about this business] is being mobile! Finding places to park can be difficult as well as keeping the trailer from getting damaged.” Tara shares that despite the trials and tribulations of owning a store on wheels, she took to the streets to immerse herself in Denver’s creative and mobile communities. “I love being able to all set up together, having friends that are knowledgeable in this business is a blessing!” One of the founders of the Denver Mobile Style Society, Tara, along with a handful of local mobile boutiques can be ordered as a group for private parties, events and more. @judithandjoe My passion project, the love of my life, my 1997 Snowmass shuttle bus-shaped heart that I co-own with friend and former co-worker Sara Graf. Sara puts it well. “Its been exciting to be involved in Denver’s creative community. Everyone is so supportive.” One thing we’ve loved about the community is the lack of competition and instead the pure support of a business model that was virtually unknown just years ago. “The growth is exciting,” Sara adds. “The more people understand mobile boutiques the less people will ask if we’re going to close the bus doors and drive off with them inside.” Judith & Joe’s motto is to Look Good, Do Good by providing a one-stop shop for conscious purchases. We carry new men’s and women’s clothing, vinyl records and accessories. Many of the brands on the bus have a philanthropic element. We have a local dress maker that outsources work to a small, happy group of women in Honduras. “One of the women in Honduras would spend hours waiting outside her daughter’s school. Now she has a place to go during the day and extra income to provide for her family.” Sara tells. It’s stories like that that give Judith & Joe its drive, so to speak. Other brands provide education, give back to local organizations like the Denver Rescue Mission, contain recycled materials or simply use good factory practices. @denverfashiontruck It’s a family affair with Denver Fashion Truck. Husband and wife team Adrian and Desiree Gallegos-Barragan, (with occasional help from DFT heirs Jade and Alex) have formed a family of more than 25 local designers aboard their plaid beauty. Adrian’s background in music and graffiti art coupled with Desiree’s history of fashion and entrepreneurship create a funky, fun harmonious blend inside their cozy truck. You can find both of their creations (tees for Adrian, pillows for Desiree) alongside the talent of your neighbors and a handful of select vintage pieces. Denver Fashion Truck has epitomized the beauty of Denver’s digest-
ible design community in just 97 square feet. Open for nearly a year and a half, the duo pops up nearly every day of the week year-round, posting, like most mobile boutiques, their daily whereabouts on social media. “We hope [the community] continues to grow. The idea is catching on and we are seeing a lot of interest.” Desiree shares. It’s clear when you step aboard that their primary goal in all of this is community. “[There’s] a small number of fashion trucks. We are all diverse and it’s refreshing!
