10 Seoul Design Assets 서울디자인자산

600년 역사와 뛰어난 디자인이 깃든 서울의 문화유산 초고층 빌딩 및 IT 산업단지 등 최첨단을 달리는 도심 한복판에 경복궁, 남대문 등 600년 역사를 느낄 수 있는 도시, 바로 서울이다. 서울은 조선의 수도가 된 이래 현재까지 우리나라의 과거와 현재를 고스란히 간직하고 있다. 서울이 지닌 이러한 우수한 문화, 역사, 도시 환경을 디자인 관점에서 재발견해 현재와 미래 가치로 계승하고자 선정한 것이 서울디자인자산이다. 그중 직접 가볼 수 있는 30곳을 소개한다.

Cultural assets of Seoul boasting a 600-year history and unparalleled designs Seoul contains several silent witnesses to its 600-year history, such as Gyeongbokgung Palace and Namdaemun, nestled amidst its skyscrapers and cutting-edge IT industrial parks in downtown areas. Since becoming the nation’s capital, Seoul has preserved the past and the present of Korea. Seoul City has selected various places and designated them as “Seoul Design Assets” in order to rediscover their value from cultural, historical, and urban environmental perspectives and preserve their value in the present and the future. We introduce 30 of those places here.

“ 서울의 가장 아름다운 경관을 볼 수 있는 랜드마크” 1980년 일반인에게 공개되기 시작하면서 서울을 상징하는 대표 건축물로 자리 잡은 N서울타워는 지금까지 그 위상에 변함이 없다. 2005년 리모델링 후 서울을 대표하는 복합문화공간으로 자리매김한 N서울타워에서는 첨단 미디어 장비를 활용한 디스플레이를 펼쳐 빛이 만들어내는 예술을 만나볼 수 있다. 특히 매일 오후 7시부터 밤 12시까지, 정시마다 타워 전신은 다른 색의 빛으로 갈아입으며 서울의 밤을 환하게 밝힌다. 서울 전경이 한눈에 들어오는 이곳은 저마다의 사랑을 약속한 이들의 자물쇠로 가득하며, 서울 밤의 낭만을 느껴볼 수 있다.

“ A landmark with the most beautiful view of Seoul” Since opening to the public in 1980, the N Seoul Tower has established itself as a major landmark in Seoul. Namsan Mountain is a popular place to go and take a photo with the tower in the background. With its renovation in 2005, the tower has now become an important cultural complex in Seoul. Every night, from 7 pm to midnight, the tower uses a high-tech LED lighting system to illuminate itself in an hourly multicolored lightshow. The nightview from the tower is breathtaking, and the “love” padlocks hanging on the tower fence evoke romantic feelings.

“ 경기장을 넘어 문화 행사장으로” 2002년 월드컵을 성공리에 유치한 대한민국의 중심에는 서울월드컵경기장이 있다. 위에서 내려다보면 사각형의 커다란 전통 방패연이 눈에 들어온다. 경기장 주변이 과거 마포나루였다는 점을 살려 경기장의 이미지를 황포 돛배가 모여 있는 형상으로 표현하여 디자인적으로도 큰 의미를 담고 있는 곳이다. 2002 월드컵 당시의 영상실 등을 갖춘 2002 FIFA 월드컵기념관이 있어서 그때의 감동을 다시 느낄 수 있다. 이제는 국내외 경기와 각종 대형 콘서트, 문화 행사가 펼쳐지며 서울시민의 문화 공간으로 자리매김했다.

“ A venue for cultural and sporting events” Having served as a major venue for the FIFA World Cup 2002, the Seoul World Cup Stadium reminds us of the frenzy caused by the 2002 World Cup. The roof of the stadium was built in the shape of a traditional Korean shield-shaped kite. In honor of the Mapo Pier, previously located in this area, the stadium is designed to portray sail boats gathered together. It houses the World Cup Gallery, which features information about the players, the locker room, and the World Cup video room. The Seoul World Cup Stadium has now made a name for itself as a major venue for various local and international sporting events, large-scale concerts, and a variety of cultural events.

Gyeongbokgung Palace 경복궁

“ 조선 역사를 품고 있는 궁” 조선시대를 대표하는 정궁인 경복궁은 1395년(태조 4년)에 지어졌다. 정궁은 왕이 평소에 사는 궁으로, 궁 중에서도 으뜸이 되는 곳을 일컫는다. 서울 4개의 큰 산이 감싸 보호하는 형상으로 주변 산세와 어우러져 궁을 보며 조선의 역사를 돌아볼 수 있는 곳이기도 하다. 조선시대에 지어진 궁 가운데 가장 넓은 실내 공간을 갖춘 근정전에서는 왕의 제위식을 열거나 임금이 외국에서 온 사신을 만나는 등 규모가 큰 공식적인 행사가 치러졌다. 한편, 근정전 서북쪽에는 우리나라에서 규모가 가장 큰 누각 건물인 경회루가 있다. 나라에 경사가 있거나 외국 사신이 왔을 때 연회를 베풀던 장소로 수려한 경관을 자랑한다.

“ A royal palace that embraces the history of Joseon” Built in 1395 (the fourth year of King Taejo’s reign), Gyeongbokgung Palace is the main royal palace representing the Joseon Dynasty (13921910) and served as the home of the King. Encircled by four large mountains in Seoul, Gyeongbokgung Palace blends well with the surrounding landscape. Geunjeongjeon, the largest building in Gyeongbokgung Palace, was used as a venue for large-scale official events, such as coronations and ceremonies for foreign envoys and ambassadors. Standing at the northwest of this hall is Gyeonghoeru, the largest elevated pavilion in the palace. It was used to hold important state banquets for special occasions and for foreign envoys and boasts a superb landscape.

“ 서울 도심 속 숨은 고궁 찾기” 수많은 사람으로 북적거리는 광화문과 서대문 사이에 고즈넉하게 자리 잡고 있다. 경희궁은 1623년(광해군 15년)에 창건, 경복궁 서쪽에 세워진 까닭으로 서궐로 통칭되었다. 정조의 어진을 봉안하는 태령전 뒤에는 상서로운 바위라는 뜻의 서암이라 불리는 거대한 바위가 있다. 이런 바위를 궁 안으로 끌어들인 것은 흔치 두었다고 한다. 원래 100여 동의 건물로 이루어져 있었으나 일제강점기 때 전각 대부분이 헐리고 건물들도 매각되면서 면적의 절반이 축소되었다. 1987년부터 경희궁지 발굴 과정을 거쳐 전각들을 복원하고 2002년부터 시민들에게 공개하고 있다.

“ A royal palace hidden away in downtown Seoul” Gyeonghuigung Palace sits between the bustling Gwanghwamun and Seodaemun areas. Established in 1623 (the 15th year of King Gwanghaegun’s reign), Gyeonghuigung Palace used to be called Seogyol (West Palace) because it was located west of Gyeongbokgung Palace. There is a large rock called Seoam behind Taeryeongjeon, an ancestral shrine where a portrait of King Jeongjo is enshrined. It was unusual to have such a rock in the palace, but it was viewed as an auspicious sign. Gyeonghuigung Palace originally housed about 100 buildings, but a large number of them were destroyed or sold under Japanese rule, reducing the palace to about half of its original size. Since 1987, the Korean government has been excavating the palace grounds in order to restore some of the buildings and, since 2002, has been opening them to the public.

“ 600년 서울 역사를 간직한 도시 문화 광장” “ An urban cultural space that keeps

the 600-year history of Seoul alive”

서울의 대표 광장으로 거듭난 광화문광장은 조선시대 광화문 남쪽 좌우에 관아가 자리 잡아 이른바 육조거리를 이루었던 곳이다. 광화문과 경복궁이 직선으로 이어져 남북 중심축을 이루었으며 국가의 권위를 상징하는 거리였다. 600년 역사가 흐르는 육조거리를 중심으로 약 555m에 달하는 거리에 광장이 조성된 것이다. 서울의 역동적인 경관을 경험할 수 있는 광화문광장에는 잠시 휴식을 취할 수 있는 의자와 전시 공간, 문화 갤러리 등이 마련되어 있다. 광장 양쪽에는 주요 역사를 각인한 돌판을 깔고 역사 물길을 조성하여 지난 600년의 세월을 마주할 수 있다.

Established as Seoul’s main square, Gwanghwamun Square was originally called Yukjo-geori, meaning “a street lined with six royal administrative buildings,” during the Joseon period. Gwanghwamun was linked to Gyeongbokgung Palace in a straight line, forming a south-north axis and symbolizing national authority. The 555-meter long street with a 600-year history has now been turned into a space where visitors can take in Seoul’s dynamic landscape, sit and rest, or check out the surrounding exhibition halls and galleries. The floor of the waterway along the east side of the square is engraved with major historical events spanning from the Joseon period to the present.

“ 우리의 역사 유물을 품은 소중한 보금자리” 2005년 10월 개관한 국립중앙박물관은 우리 역사 속 소중한 유물들의 멋진 보금자리다. 지하 1층부터 지상 6층의 공간에 30만여 점의 유물을 보관, 전시하는 세계적 규모의 박물관이라 할 수 있다. 한국을 대표하는 박물관답게 남산과 한강이 둘러싸는 배산임수의 장소에 자리 잡았다. 건물 역시 한국 전통 건축이 지향하는 있다. 전체 유물을 살피려면 약 1주일의 시간이 걸리는 방대한 규모이니 박물관이 선정한 ‘중요 유물 100선’ 등의 코스를 선택하거나 시간을 나누어 관람하는 것도 좋은 방법이다.

“ A treasure trove of Korean historical relics” Opened in October 2005, the National Museum of Korea is home to many precious Korean historical relics. Consisting of seven stories and one basement level, the museum houses a collection of over 300,000 relics. The museum is positioned in accordance with the traditional architectural principle baesanimsu, literally meaning “a mountain in the back and a river in the front,” and so was built facing the Hangang River with Namsan Mountain behind it. The museum building is also designed to reflect the ideals of traditional Korean architecture, such as creating harmony with the surrounding environment, openness, communication, and participation. The museum collection is so vast and diverse that it may take over one week to see all the exhibitions. One good approach is to choose a thematic route, such as the “100 Important Relics,” or just take your time and enjoy each area one at a time.

Deoksugung Palace 덕수궁

“ 근대의 역사가 건축으로 남아 있는 궁” 고종 재위 말년 약 10년간 정치적 혼란의 주 무대가 되었던 덕수궁의 원래 명칭은 경운궁이었다. 하지만 1907년 고종이 순종에게 양위한 뒤 이곳에 살면서 덕수궁으로 바꾸었다. 궁내에 지어진 건물마다 서울의 중세와 근대사를 담고 있어 그 자체가 건축 디자인의 보고라 할 수 있다. 특히 당시 건축된 서양식 건물 가운데 규모가 가장 큰 석조전과 고종이 다과를 들거나 연회를 열고 음악을 감상하기 위해 지은 최초의 양옥 정관헌 등이 유명하다. 구한말의 역사적 현장으로 전통 목조 건축물과 서양식 건축물이 함께 남아 있어 독특한 경관을 자랑한다.

“ An architecturally significant building symoblizing modern Korean history” Deoksugung Palace, originially referred to as Gyeongunggung Palace, was a site of political turmoil during the final ten years of King Gojong’s reign. After his abdication of the throne to King Sunjong, however, King Gojong lived here and changed the name to Deoksugung. The palace buildings capture the history of Korea and preserve a wealth of its architectural designs. Among the many buildings inside the palace, Seokjojeon, the largest of all the Western-style buildings, and Jeonggwanheon, the first Westernstyle building built there and built for King Gojong to relax in, hold various events such as banquets and concerts. As a historical center at the end of the Joseon period, Deoksugung Palace boasts a unique landscape composed of a mix of traditional Korean wooden buildings and Western-style buildings.

“ 민족 자주 의지의 상징” 독립협회를 조직했던 서재필은 중국 사신을 영접하고 배웅하던 영은문 자리에 독립문을 세울 것을 제안했다. 청나라에 대한 사대 외교를 끊으려 했던 상징적 의미가 담겨 있는 곳으로 우리 민족 스스로 힘을 키워 근대 국가를 만들고자 하는 의지를 나타낸다. 디자인의 모티프는 파리의 개선문에서 가져왔지만 우리의 전통 짧은 받침 기둥을 세웠는데, 이러한 형식은 석굴암 금당에서도 찾아볼 수 있다. 또한 홍예의 이맛돌에는 조선 황실을 상징하는 자두꽃이 새겨져 있다. 이처럼 독립문은 자주적인 대한제국을 꿈꿨던 이들의 염원이 담겨있다.

“ A symbol of Korea’s desire for national independence” Jae-Pil Seo, who organized the Independence Club, suggested that Korea build an dongnimmun (independence gate) to replace Yeongeun Gate, which was a symbol of diplomatic ties between Korea and China, in an attempt to sever Korea’s submissive relationship with the Qing Dynasty and reinforce Korea’s determination to form a modern and independent nation. Althouth the gate was modeled after the Arc de Triomphe in Paris, it contains many traditional Korean architectural elements and patterns. For instance, the platforms that support the four corners of the red gate are similar to those found in the main hall of the Seokguram in Gyeongju, Korea. Also, the arched keystone is engraved with plum blossom patterns, the symbol of the Joseon imperial family. Dongnimmun is a symbol of the Korean people’s dream of establishing an independent nation.

Myeongdong Cathedral 명동성당

“ 종교 그 이상의 의미를 지닌 대한민국 대표 성당” 1898년 준공 당시 뾰족집이라 불리며 고딕 건축의 장중함과 위용을 자랑하는 명동성당은 한국 천주교 서울대교구 주교좌 성당이다. 한국 천주교의 발상지이자 상징이라는 종교적인 의미 외에도 개화기 외래 건축 문화를 수용했다는 점에서 건축학적으로도 의의가 크다. 한편, 가난하고 억압받는 사람들의 피난처 역할을 하기도 했고 민주화 투쟁의 중심에 서 있는 등 굴곡진 대한민국 현대사에서 빠지지 않는 곳이다. 빛이 바랜 벽돌 벽이 고풍스러운 분위기를 자아내는 명동성당은 번잡한 명동 한가운데서도 경건함을 잃지 않는다.

“ A symbol of Korean Catholicism that transcends religion” Myeongdong Cathedral was called “Spire House,” in Korean, when it was completed in 1898. Showcasing the grandeur and dignity of Gothic architecture, the Myeongdong Cathedral of the Archdiocese of Seoul is significant not only as the birthplace and symbol of Korean Catholicism, but it is also an example of Westernstyle architecture after the Korean enlightenment period. Furthermore, it has served as a shelter for the poor and oppressed and a center of various democratic movements. As an important part of modern Korean history, the cathedral maintains its solemn and antique atmosphere, created by its time-worn bricks, in the bustling Myeong-dong area.

Bosingak 보신각

“ 서울의 시공간 중심지” 조선을 건국한 태조가 서울을 출입하기 위해 만든 성문의 여닫는 시간을 알리고자 종루를 세웠으니 그곳이 지금의 보신각이다. 당시 보신각은 매일 종을 쳐서 성문을 여닫음으로써 백성들의 생활에 질서를 부여했다. 1395년(태조 4년) 처음 세운 후 4번이나 불타 없어지고 8번에 걸쳐 다시 지었다. 현재 모습은 이래 600년 동안 서울 시민과 함께해오며 종로의 랜드마크로 자리매김했다. 서울의 역사를 생생하게 전달해주는 상징적인 유적으로 해마다 12월 31일에는 새해를 맞이하는 타종식을 즐기기 위해 모여든 사람들로 가득하다.

“ A spatial and temporal center of Seoul” King Taejo, the founding father of the Joseon Dynasty, erected the Bosingak bell pavilion to signal, by hitting the large bell, the opening and closing of the four main gates of Seoul, helping to maintain order in everyday life. Bosingak has been destroyed by fire four times since it was first built in 1395 (the fourth year of King Taejo’s reign) and restored eight times. The present form of Bosingak is the result of a restoration project completed by Seoul City in August, 1979. As a silent witness to Korean history for over 600 years since the foundation of the Joseon Dynasty in 1392, Bosingak has served as a symbolic landmark in Jongno. “ 골목길 따라 걷는 시간 여행” 수백 년을 거슬러 올라간 것 같은 착각을 불러일으키는 곳이 서울 한가운데에 자리 잡고 있다. 경복궁과 창덕궁, 종묘 사이에 위치한 서울의 대표적인 전통 주거 지역인 북촌한옥마을이다. 북촌은 조선시대 유교 문화에 토대를 둔 중·상류층이 살았던 동네로, 자신들의 사상을 시각화하고 디자인한 생활 공간이었다. 옛 지도와 현재 지도를 비교해보면 북촌의 골목길들이 예전 모습 그대로 유지된 것을 알 수 있다. 그만큼 유교 문화를 토대로 한 사적들과 문화재, 민속 자료 등을 마주칠 수 있어 길 자체가 거리 박물관인 곳이다. 북촌한옥마을은 오늘도 과거와 현재가 공존하며 흘러가고 있다.

“ Walk these small streets and take a trip back in time” Located in downtown Seoul, Bukchon Hanok Village is a place that can almost make you believe you’re several hundred years in the past. Located between Gyeongbokgung Palace, Changdeokgung Palace, and the Jongmyo, Bukchon Hanok Village is a large traditional residential area in downtown Seoul. In the Joseon period, Bukchon was home to upper-middle class families who strictly followed their Confucian philosophy and designed the area accordingly. A comparison of old and modern maps of the Bukchon area shows that the streets in the area have remained almost identical. The small streets of Bukchon Hanok Village are themselves a large museum preserving a wealth of historical relics, cultural treasures, and folklore. Bukchon Hanok Village thrives on the peaceful coexistence of the past and the present.

“ 땅과 곡식의 신을 위해 제사를 지내던 곳” 예로부터 토지와 곡식은 국가와 민생의 근본이었다. 그래서 토지와 곡식을 관장하는 국사신과 국직신에게 제사를 드리기 위해 만든 곳이 사직단이다. 농경 사회인 조선에서 백성들의 삶을 풍요롭게 하기 위해 지은 사직단은 국가를 상징한다. 조선을 개국한 태조가 종묘와 함께 가장 먼저 만든 도성 시설물이 사직단의 중요성은 그 공간적 위치에서도 알 수 있다. ‘종묘는 도성의 동쪽에, 사직은 도성의 서쪽에 둔다’는 원칙에 따라서 사직단의 위치는 경복궁 왼쪽에 자리하였다. 이처럼 사직단은 종묘와 더불어 조선을

“ A train station filled with cultural diversity” Built in both modern and Renaissance architectural styles, the old Seoul Station building is a place that has thrived with the city and embraced people from all walks of life. Although the station building was a symbol of modernization and created in the process of colonial urbanization, it served as a base of independence movements during Japanese rule and democratic movements during the time of Korea’s military government, fulfilling different functions and roles than what it was originally intended for. “ 600년 넘게 서울을 지키고 있는 도성” 서울을 600년 이상 굳건히 지키고 있는 한양도성은 조선의 수도였던 한양을 둘러싸는 도시 성곽이다. 다른 도시들도 성곽을 쌓았지만 한양은 궁궐과 종묘사직이 있는 도읍이기 때문에 그 성곽을 도성이라 불러 격을 높였다. 또한 서울 한양도성은 다른 도시의 성곽과는 달리 자연 지형을 따라 축조됐다. 그 때문에 전체 모습이 모양새를 하고 있다. 1000만 명이 모여 살아가는 대도시 속에서 이토록 보존 상태가 좋은 곳은 세계적으로 드문 일이다. 600년의 세월을 간직한 서울 한양도성은 이제 도시 속 역사 공간으로 아름다운 도시경관을 책임지고 있다.

Built about 600 years ago, the Hanyang Wall of Seoul was built to protect Hanyang (present-day Seoul), the capital of Joseon, from invaders. While Hanyang was not the only city surrounded by walls in the Joseon period, its walls were called the “city wall” to reflect the status of Hanyang as the capital of Joseon and home to the royal palaces, the Jongmyo, and Sajikdan. Unlike other walls, the HanyangWall of Seoul was built in accordance with the natural topography, following the contours of the mountains rather than creating an artificial square form. Walls preserved as well as the Seoul City Wall are rarely found in other large cities around the world. Steeped in 600 years of history, the HanyangWall of Seoul is an important part of Seoul’s beautiful landscape.

“ 국내 최초 환경 재생 생태 공원” 선유도는 본래 선유봉이라는 작은 봉우리 섬으로, 과거 한강 변의 아름다운 경승지로 이름난 곳이었다. 그러나 일제강점기 때 봉우리가 깎여나가며 2000년까지 서울 서남부 지역에 수돗물을 공급하는 정수장으로 이용되었다. 이처럼 어두운 과거를 벗어나 옛 정수장의 시설물들을 재활용하고 그곳에 각종 수생식물과 초목을 심어 조성한 환경 재생 생태 공원이 선유도공원이다. 선유도공원에서는 강 건너편의 난지도, 월드컵경기장, 북한산 자락, 남산으로 이어지는 아름다운 풍경을 마주하게 된다. 근대화와 함께 사라진 선유봉의 기억을 공원 형태로 만들어 되찾아주었다.

“ Korea’s first reclaimed ecological park” Seonyudo is an island that was once home to a small mountain peak called Seonyubong, which was famous for its beautiful scenery. However, the mountain peak was removed under Japanese rule and the island was used as a water filtration plant that supplied tap water to the northwest area of Seoul until 2000. Seoul City reclaimed the abandoned facility to create an ecological park covered with aquatic plants and trees. Looking out across the Hangang River from Seonyudo Park, you can see the beautiful scenery of Nanjido Island, the World Cup Stadium, Bukhansan Mountain, and Namsan Mountain. Traces of the old Seonyubong, lost to modernization, have been restored in the park.

Based on Confucianism as the national ideology, Seonggyungwan aimed to nurture promising individuals and reform society. Equipped with facilities for Confucian rituals and education, Seonggyungwan reflects Confucian educational ideology in its architectural design and holds a ritual called Munmyojere, also known as Seokjeonje, twice a year to honor Confucius and other sages. Sungnyemun 숭례문

“ 서울의 관문에서 새 시대 희망의 문으로”

한양도성의 남쪽 문이자 정문의 역할을 했던 숭례문은 한양 성곽과 함께 1396년(태조 5년)에 만들어졌다. 현존하는 한국 성문 건축물로서는 가장 규모가 크며 조선 초기 유적으로 역사적 가치가 고스란히 담겨 있다. 건축사적인 가치와 아름다운 건축 양식을 지닌 숭례문은 국보 1호라는 호칭에서도 그 상징성과 중요성이 얼마나 큰지 알 수 있다. 그러나 2008년 2월 화재로 인하여 전소한 안타까운 일이 발생했다. 온 국민의 성원과 관심 속에서 숭례문 복구가 진행되었으며 장장 5년 3개월에 걸친 복구 작업을 완료하고 2013년 개방되었다.

“ A gate of Seoul heralding a new era of hope” A main gate of Seoul and Korea’s National Treasure No. 1, Sungnyemun was built in 1396 (the fifth year of King Taejo’s reign) along with the HanyangWall of Seoul. It is the largest of the gates built at the beginning of the Joseon Dynasty and holds much historical and architectural value. That fact that Sungnyemun was designated as National Treasure No. 1 shows its symbolic importance to Koreans. It was severely damaged in a fire in February 2008 but was reopened in 2013 after the completion of five years and three months of restorations.

“ 쓰레기 매립지에서 피어난 자연”

꽃과 풀이 만발한 월드컵공원이 15년간 서울 시민이 버린 쓰레기로 만들어진 쓰레기 산이었다는 것은 믿기 힘든 사실이 아닐 수 없다. 월드컵공원은 2002년 서울월드컵경기장을 만들면서 함께 조성한 곳으로, 서울 난지도 쓰레기 매립장에 완성한 대규모 환경 생태 공원이다. 생명이 깃드는 일이 불가능할 것처럼 일구어냈다. 월드컵공원은 대표 공원인 평화의공원을 비롯해 하늘공원, 노을공원, 난지천공원, 난지한강공원의 5개 테마 공원으로 조성되었다.

It is hard to believe that World Cup Park, now covered with flowers and plants, was originally a mountainous pile of waste and garbage. Created in 2002, along with the Seoul World Cup Stadium, World Cup Park is a large ecological park on Nanjido, a small islet that once contained the landfill. Considering the park’s beginnings, its existance is nothing short of a miracle. World Cup Park consists of five theme parks: Pyeonghwa (Peace) Park, Haneul (Sky) Park, Noeul (Sunset) Park, Nanjicheon (Nanji Stream) Park, and Nanji Hangang Park.

“ 흥미로운 왕실 이야기가 담겨 있는 궁” 창경궁은 대비, 즉 어머니를 셋이나 모시게 된 성종이 이들이 편히 지낼 수 있도록 기존의 수강궁을 확장해 만든 궁이다. 사도세자나 장희빈 이야기 모두 창경궁이 배경인 것을 보면 알 수 있듯이 왕비와 후궁의 갈등, 왕의 효심 등 많은 왕실 이야기가 얽혀 있는 현장이기도 하다. 한편, 가장 오래된 정전인 명정전과 조선 중기 이전의 건축 디자인이 일부 남아 있는 중요한 곳이다. 그러나 일제강점기 때 이러한 창경궁을 격하시키기 위해 궁을 훼손하고 정원으로 변모시켰다. 이런 수모를 겪은 후 동물원과 놀이시설을 철거하는 등 옛 모습을 되찾으려는 노력이 지속적으로 이루어지고 있다.

“ A royal palace with an exciting history” Changgyeonggung Palace was originally built as Suganggung, but King Seongjong had it renovated for his three mothers, including the Royal Dowager. Changgyeonggung Palace is a place at the heart of many stories about the tension between the Queen and royal noble consorts, especially Lady Huibin Jang, and the piety of Crown Prince Sado. The palace houses Myeongjeongjeon, the oldest of the palace buildings, and others that still retain the architectural designs of the mid-Joseon period. Despite its historical importance, the palace was severely damaged and then later turned into a zoo with a botanical garden; this was done under Japanese rule in an attempt to minimize the status of the palace. The Korean government has continued to restore the old glory of the palace by relocating the zoo and botanical garden.

“ 궁 안에 자연을 담다”

우리나라 궁 가운데 유일하게 세계유산으로 등재된 창덕궁은 경복궁에 이어 두 번째로 모습을 드러낸 곳으로 1405년(태종 5년) 완공되었다. 임진왜란으로 경복궁 및 도성의 궁들이 소실되자 1868년(고종 5년) 경복궁을 중건할 때까지 임금이 거처하는 정궁 역할을 하게 된다. 질서 정연하게 건물이 들어선 경복궁과는 수려하고 아름다운 모습을 자랑하는 것이 특징이다. 울창한 나무들과 숲 속의 정원 같은 후원 등 가장 한국적인 궁의 모습을 담고 있다.

“ A royal palace exisiting in perfect harmony with nature” The only Korean palace designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Changdeokgung Palace served as a secondary palace, after Gyeongbokgung Palace, and was completed in 1405 (the fifth year of King Taejong’s reign). With the burning of Gyeongbokgung Palace and other palaces during the Japanese invasion of Korea, Korean kings took up residence in Changdeokgung Palace until Gyeongbokgung Palace was restored in 1868 (the fifth year of King Gojong’s reign). Unlike Gyeongbokgung Palace, in which various buildings are arranged in an orderly fashion, Changdeokgung Palace blends well with the environment and its buildings reflect the natural topography of the palace grounds, creating harmony with their surroundings. With its thickly-wooded garden (Huwon), rarely found in other palaces, Changdeokgung Palace is the royal Korean palace that best captures traditional Korean elements.

“ 문화가 흐르는 도심 속 휴식처” 도시의 중심부를 흐르며 서울의 대표 명소로 자리매김했지만 사실 청계천은 썩은 하천이라는 오명을 지니고 있던 곳이었다. 서울을 가로지르는 도시 하천으로서 서울의 하수도 역할을 떠맡아야 했으며, 그로 인한 악취와 오수로 사람들에게 혐오감을 주었다. 이를 위생적으로 차단하기 위해 1958년 서울시는 청계천을 복개하기로 했다. 도심 한가운데를 흐르는 깨끗한 하천을 되찾아 그 기능을 회복하고자 복원이 시작되었고, 지금은 맑은 물이 흐르는 청계천을 볼 수 있게 되었다. 현재는 시민들의 휴식 공간 및 버스킹 공연과 등불축제 등 다양한 행사가 열리는 문화의 장으로 이용되고 있다.

“ A place for relaxation and cultural activities in downtown Seoul” Flowing through the heart of downtown Seoul, the the Cheonggyecheon is a major landmark in Seoul. However, it used to be severely polluted and filled with all kinds of trash, becoming a major eyesore in the city. In 1958, the stream was covered up with concrete for the sake of public hygiene, and an elevated highway was constructed above it. With the completion of a restoration project in 2005, the Cheonggyecheon is now again open to the public, serving as a great place to relax and the location of a variety of cultural events, such as the Seoul Lantern Festival and busking.

“시민을 위한 첫 근대 도시 공원” 1897년에 조성된 탑골공원은 한국 최초의 근대적인 도시 공원이다. 도시 공원은 근대도시의 상징적 표상의 하나로 왕을 위한 궁궐 내 정원과는 달리 시민을 위한 휴식 공간이다. 근대 시민 공원으로 만들어진 탑골공원은 일제강점기에는 3·1운동의 발상지가 되었으며, 그 후로도 각종 저항운동 성격의 집회가 역사적 유적, 3·1운동과 관련된 동상 및 기념물이 남아 있다. 탑골공원은 대한민국의 근대 역사가 살아 숨 쉬는 곳으로서 시민들을 맞이한다.

“ Korea’s first modern park for citizens” Tapgol Park was Korea’s first modern public park and was created in downtown Seoul in 1897. The park symbolized that Seoul was a modern city because it was a space for the public, unlike the royal garden in the palace, which was exclusively for the royal family. Tapgol Park was where the March 1st Independence Movement of 1919 began, as well as various other protest movements during the Japanese colonial period. The park is historically important as it is home to the 10-storey Wongaksa Pagoda, the monument of Wongaksa, and several statues and monuments related to the March 1st Movement. It is a public park where the modern history of Korea is kept alive.

“대한제국의 독립 의지를 보여주는 곳”

토지신과 곡물신에게 제사를 지내는 곳이 사직단이라면 하늘에 제사를 지내던 곳은 환구단이다. 그러나 하늘 제사는 황제만이 올릴 수 있다는 중국의 외압으로 세조 때 폐지됐었다. 그러다가 고종이 조선을 대한제국이라 칭하고 황제로 즉위하자 다시 설치되었다. 서울광장 옆 하늘에 제를 올리던 환구단의 일부다. 대한제국의 독립 의지를 드러내는 상징적인 공간으로, 황제국의 위용을 선포하고 독립적인 국가상을 보여주고자 하는 정치적, 역사적 의미가 담겨 있다.

“ A place that symbolizes Koreans’ determination to gain national independence” Similar to Sajikdan, the altar for rituals performed to the gods of earth and grain, Hwangudan is a site for the ritual offering to heaven. During the reign of King Sejo in the Joseon period, the ritual to heaven was abolished under orders from China, insisting that only the emperor had the right to perform the ritual. However, King Gojong reinstated the tradition after he changed the name of the nation from Joseon to Daehan Jeguk (Korean Empire) and declared himself emperor. Hwanggungu, behind the Westin Chosun Hotel in Sogong-dong and right next to Seoul Square, is part of Hwangudan and is where Emperor Gojong held the rites. A symbolic place that captures Korea’s desire for national independence, Hwangudan holds both historical and political importance.

“조선의 동쪽을 책임지는 수문장”

보물 1호 흥인지문은 조선시대 중요한 국가 시설이 있던 한성부를 보호하기 위해 만든 8개 성문 가운데 동쪽의 큰 문에 해당한다. 동대문이라는 이름도 거기서 기인했다. 흥인지문은 조선 후기의 섬세하고 화려한 건축양식을 잘 나타내고 있는 문화재로, 도성의 8개 성문 중 유일하게 밖에서 안이 보이지 않도록 둘러쌓은 적으로부터 공격을 받을 수 있는 지형적 약점을 보완하기 위함이다. 현재는 화려한 동대문쇼핑타운의 야경과 웅장한 흥인지문이 어우러져 이색적인 풍경을 자아낸다.

Heunginjimun Gate is designated as Korea’s Treasure No. 1 and is one of the eight city gates that were built to protect Hanseongbu, the office that supervised Hanseong and housed many important government facilities in the Joseon period. As Heunginjimun was designed to defend the eastern part of Joseon, it was also called Dongdaemun, which literally means the “Great East Gate.” A cultural asset that highlights the elegant and brilliant architectural style of the late Joseon period, Heunginjimun is the only one of the eight gates that has a small semi-circular wall, which was designed to make the gate difficult to see from the outside. This was done to make up for the gate’s topographical weakness, the low and flat surrounding land that made it vulnerable to enemy attack. The nightview of the dazzling Dongdaemun shopping district encompassing the magnificent Heunginjimun creates a very exotic landscape.

Koh is an installation artist and head of the Art Exhibition Division of A-Motion, as well as CEO and designer-in-chief at Cocomods, a fashion brand. Koh has designed the art for Korean films Like a Virgin and Hellcats. He is also the mastermind behind the superlarge art installation, Hourglass, in the headquarters of Hana Bank, as well as the sculpture, Party, at the BMW Mini building in Cheongdam-dong. Koh continues to organize numerous exhibitions and design products for fashion brands.

Ku is the CEO of Le Sixieme, trustee of the Space and Environment Design Institute of Korea, and adjunct professor at Gachon University. It was Ku’s Francophilia that led him to become interested in architecture. After studying the arts at ESAG Penninghen, Ku went on to become a certified interior architect in France. Ku redesigned the book café at the Seoul Culture Foundation and the house-turned-gallery, Lumiere. Ku is known for his designs that respect the inherent characteristics of the spaces.

네덜란드에서 디자인 콘셉트를 공부했다. 미술관과 갤러리에서의 디자인 기획자로 일하며 매년 한 번의 작품을 전시하고 있다. 해외 디자이너와의 교류 및 한국 디자인 콘텐츠를 분석하고 구성하여 공감할 수 있는 모델을 제시한다. 현재는 디자인 콘텐츠 사무소 P/P/S를 운영하며 디자인 기획과 분석, 전시 기획과 작품 활동을 하면서 다양한 경험을 쌓고 있다.

Having studied design concepts in the Netherlands, Ku now works as a design planner at various museums and galleries, and organizes exhibitions of his own at least once a year. He focuses on forging partnerships with designers abroad, analyzing Korean designs, and developing models of design with wide public appeal. Now running P/P/S, a design studio, Ku continues to analyze and plan various design projects and exhibitions, while working on his own projects as well.

A metal craft designer by trade, Kim holds a doctorate from the Graduate School of Design at Hanyang University, and has held three solo exhibitions and taken part in over 200 collective exhibitions. He has won several awards, including the Grand Prize in the handicraft category at the Korea National Arts Fair, the Association of Korean Crafts Councils Award, and the Gold Medal at the Cheongju International Crafts Biennale. Having studied metal crafts and decorative accessories at the Royal College of Art in England, Kim is now building her career as a designer of innovative decorative pieces, including a piece of installation art with a knitted metal net and a braceletlike jewelry piece that leaves patterns on the body. Her work is broad and interdisciplinary in scope, and she has taken part in large exhibitions and design fairs in Korea and abroad, including the Tent London, while also teaching college classes. Her work, Second Skin by Impressing, is now on display at the Seoul Museum. She has also secured a patent grant for her aurora, a type of illuminated jewelry.

독립 음반사 붕가붕가레코드(BGBG Records)의 설립에 동참하면서 현재까지 수석 디자이너로 활동하고 있다. 2010년부터 개인 스튜디오 ‘기조측면(kijoside)’을 운영 중이다. 한글 타이포그래피 분야 중 하나인 한글 레터링을 기반으로 한 다양한 작업을 선보이고 있다.

Representative of Paiksun Design Studio, Kim rose to prominence when he won the Grand Prize in oriental painting at the 1989 Central Art Grand Fair. He has since turned his attention to spatial design, and produced a number of works incorporating a unique balance of Korean aesthetics and modern styles, including architecture, interior design, art directing, and photography. In addition to designing the T-Round in Cheongdamdong (2009) and the Hana Bank PB Center (2011), he has also served as art director on projects such as the Seoul Design Festival (2008) and the Folk Culture Fair (2011).

A graduate of Hongik University, Kim now runs his own design studio, Leesun. His areas of interest include rural villages, market design, and public architecture. He has served as president of the Rural Village Revival Project and the Munjeonseongshi Project, a public project that sought to revitalize traditional open markets by promoting cultural activities in and around them. Kim is a unique architect who finds inspiration for his architectural designs in local communities and culture. He is known for the Hyeon Siblings’ House, the Buraemi House, Baeknong Studio, the Lee Yeong-seon Memorial, and the Gyenam Stadium.

Kim completed his bachelor’s degree at Utah State University and did his graduate work at Cornell University before earning a doctorate from the University of Michigan. He has been one of the most prolific designers in Korea since 1998, when he founded the Design Studio. Kim specializes in the design of high-end residential spaces, including the Intercontinental Hotel in Saigon, GT Tower, the I-Park penthouse in Samsungdong, the POSCO the Sharp penthouse in Songdo, and the I-Park penthouse in U-dong, Busan. Kim is now president of the Korean Society of Interior Designers.

Kim majored in industrial design in university before founding H.Comma, a design studio. Kim is the director of he1, a design studio that applies design concepts to products, furniture, and spaces. Architect and representative of So Gallery, Mah is one of the first-generation interior designers in Korea. Mah studied at the college and graduate school of fine arts at Kyunghee University. Since launching So Gallery in 1990, Mah has organized public campaigns such as Cafes and Leisurely Walking, Osulloc on Jeju Island, and the 12 Workshops Project in Tongyeong. This sculptor/installation artist studied sculpture at Chungang University and the Brera Academy in Milan. As illustrated by his work in recreating the brush strokes of oriental paintings or features of Western architecture with charcoal sticks and acrylic beads hanging from fishing wire, Park is interested in capturing the abstract spirituality of objects rather than their direct and outward re-production. Architect and chief creative director at Wall Street Associates, a design company, Baek studied interior design at Kookmin University, both as an undergraduate and a graduate. He is the co-winner of the KOSID Golden Scale Award, along with his colleague, Seong-chil Park, for the Lake House that was featured on the hit Korean TV show, Secret Garden. Baek is an architect and founder of Urbantainer, a studio that fosters creativity by encouraging close partnerships in the fields of design, culture, and technology (DCT). This innovative and groundbreaking DCT method has won Baek all the three major design awards in the world — the Red Dot, International Forum (iF), and International Design Excellence Awards (IDEA) — as well as the 32nd Association of Architects Award at Platoon Kunsthalle. Baek was art director and stage designer for the opening and closing ceremonies of the Pyeongchang Special Winter Olympics. Song is the director of Habitant and, after graduating with a degree in visual design from Kookmin University in 2012, he began to teach undergraduate classes on media design at his alma mater. His main projects to date include the Samsung Galaxy S4-themed media façade on the Samsung Aurora Tower in Shanghai and the media façades and landscape lighting at Lotte Shopping Mall in the Dongdaemun district, along the Gwangan Bridge in Busan, and at Xii Gallery in Seoul.

Shim is a metal artist better known for his brand name, camerAg, which is a combination of the word “camera” and “Ag,” the periodic symbol for silver. Shim is known for his silver-centered work, requiring many hours of work and remarkable refinement, including handmade cameras with strong modernist elements and a simple, geometric aesthetic. Shim has also continually produced decorative objects with partitioned planes, such as brooches and rings. He has held acclaimed exhibitions in Korea, the United States, Japan, and Sweden that promoted the value of crafts.

CEO of Crea, Yang has made significant contributions to the improvement of living spaces in Korea by presiding over design and development projects, and has also introduced system furniture at Hansam and Fursys. Yang is the founder of Wells, a design multi-shop where visitors can view and experience the work of well-known local and international designers. Yang is also actively involved in the creation of original products through collaboration with Korean designers. Under Yang’s leadership, Crea is becoming a great influence in general design management and is raising the status of designers.

After studying interior architecture and design at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2004, Yang went on to study environmental design at the Art Center College of Design in California in 2007. He began to build and expand his own creative world after starting to work as a designer at the studio of Marcel Wanders, a renowned designer based in Amsterdam. Yang currently runs his own MouRi Design Studio in the Bukchon Hanok Village in Seoul.

Artist-in-residence at the Doosan Art Center’s Creator Fostering Program, Yeo has worked as an instructor for the National Theater’s art project for youth entitled, “Exploring Young Artists: We Are Here.” He won the Stage Art Award at the Korea Theater Awards for his work in It Is a Flower in 2012. He took part in a number of leading theater performances in Korea, including I Am My Wife, Novelist Gubo’s One Day, Mudflat, Moby Dick(musical), Doing Laundry (musical), and Taking a Bungee Jump(musical).

A writer and garden designer, Oh continues to contribute her writing to newspapers and magazines, and already has had four books published. As a garden designer, she has produced a number of experimental works combining art and gardens. Most recently, she worked with Shi-Yeong Choi, an architect, to produce the Palette Garden for the 2013 Gwangju Biennale, which was designed as a “garden kitchen” at the heart of a city.

Yu is the CEO of MA, a group of architects. After obtaining undergraduate and graduate degrees from the College of Architecture at Myeongji University, Yu began building his career and dividing his time between Washington D.C. and New York City. After completing his studies at the Pratt Institute in New York City, he returned home in 2006 and has since been producing experimental works of architecture, urban planning, and design. Yu has created the Angevin office buildings in Samsung-dong, the Taepyeongyang Trade Building, Hotel Sawol, the Songam Observatory, Gallery Simon, Paju House, Haengshin House, and the Inbo Cathedral in Ulsan.

Although Lee majored in metal sculpture and design at Hongik University, he is better known for his diverse and creative furniture designs. He is becoming increasingly recognized internationally, after recently being named one of the top ten designers by judges at the DMY International Design Festival in Berlin, and a future designer nominee at Design Miami/Basel. He has also won the Young Artist Award from the Korean Ministry of Culture. His work usually features colorful hoses, tubes, and electric cables that are twisted or tied up. His works are included in permanent collections at the Montreal Decorative Arts Museum and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.

Lee is now a photography professor at Kyungil University. He is a world-renowned photographer, whose works are on display at prestigious museums around the world, including the J. Paul Getty Museum, the Danish Royal Museum, the Kiyosato Museum of Photographic Arts, and the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Korea. He is one of the most popular photographers at various biennales and corporate exhibitions. He was the first Korean photographer to decorate the cover of ARTnews, and recently held a solo exhibition at 789 Photo Gallery, the world’s largest art district in China.

국민대학교 실내디자인과, 뉴욕대 Tisch 예술대학원 졸업 후 미국 뉴욕과 보스턴을 오가면서 유명 해외 건축사무소에서 메인 디자이너로 활동했다. 2009년 이후로 AnLstudio를 설립 운영 중이다. 인천대교 전망대(오션스코프)로 레드닷 어워드에서 한국인 최초로 건축·인테리어 분야 최고상인 베스트 오브 베스트를 수상했다.

After studying interior design at Kookmin University and completing his studies at the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University, Lee worked as the main designer at a renowned architect’s studio, dividing his time between New York City and Boston. He launched his own studio, AnLstudio, in 2009. He was the first Korean to win the Best of Best Award, the highest honor in the architecture and interior design category, at the Red Dot Awards for his work on the Incheon Bridge, called “Oceanscope”.

Lee is one of the most renowned fashion designers in Korea with an international reputation. After completing his studies in industrial design at Hongik University, Lee worked as a product designer at Samsung Electronics before going over to the United States to start his career at Fuseproject, an industrial design consulting firm. After Fuseproject, Lee became an IT, lifestyle, and aviation designer at Teague, established in 1926. Lee has done innovative and experimental work in collaboration with Motorola, Microsoft, Coca Cola, and Samsung Electronics, and has won prestigious awards at the International Forum, the International Design Excellence Awards, the Red Dot, I.D. Magazine, and Lightouch. He is now co-CEO at SWBK and Matter and Matter.

CEO of Maison de Lee Young Hee, Lee represents the evolution of the traditional Korean garment, known as hanbok, by being the first Korean designer to participate in Who’s Next Pret-a-Porter in Paris in 1993, and also the first Korean to open a boutique in Paris, which later became known as “the prettiest shop in Paris.” Lee created the durumagi, a traditional-style overcoat, for the leaders of the 21 member-states of the APEC Summit held in Busan, in 2005, and also hosted a fashion show for the First Ladies of the G20 leaders in 2011. Founder of Yido and a professional potter, Lee studied at Hongik University and the Kyoto City University of Arts in Japan. Starting with his first solo exhibition in Japan, in 1984, Lee has held a large number of exhibitions, the last one being a solo exhibition at the Living Arts Museum of Seoul in 2013. Lee-Nam Lee is a media artist. He completed his Ph.D. in fine art at Chosun University and another Ph.D.in film and video at the Yonsei University Graduate School of Communication and Arts. He has held 26 solo exhibitions and participated in over 260 major exhibitions. He has served as an artist affiliated exclusively with Samsung Electronics, a speaker at the EPICS Forum hosted by the Universiads Gwangju, a PR ambassador for the World Conservation Congress (WCC) and the Korean National Commission for UNESCO, and the artistic director of the 2013 Gwangju Media Art Festival.

After studying visual design at Seoul National University, Lee enrolled in ELISAVA in Barcelona and obtained a master’s degree in design and public space. Lee has been working as an independent designer out of his own studio since 2008. He founded Action Seoul, a brand consulting firm, in 2010, and has since advised numerous companies and local administrations on branding strategies. He was named one of the Next-Generation Design Leaders by the Ministry of Strategy and Finance in 2006 and 2007, and also one of the Artists Representative of Korea at the Shanghai Expo in 2010.

Lee fell in love with wool and has long worked on felt projects. He has held six solo exhibitions and participated in various collective shows worldwide, including the Maison and Objet, the New York Gift Fair, and the Crafts Trend Fair. He won the Grand Prize at the Korea Traditional, Cultural, and Natural Dyeing Contest, second place at the Korea Crafts Awards, and a special award at the Cheongju International Crafts Contest. CEO and chief carpenter at Naechon Carpenter’s Shop, located in the tranquility of a scarcely populated and mountainous village in Gangwon province, Lee is known as a vendor of well-crafted and fine objects, which include furniture and other woodworking items of his own design. He led the Gangwon Naechon Village Making Project in 2006, which involved restoring old buildings. He has also held exhibitions in Milan and Zurich, and designed and built numerous houses that pay full respect to the natural texture of wood, including houses in Pyeongchang-dong, on Jiri Mountain, and the Naechon Woodworking Shop 2.

Design director at Paper Toy Momot Studio, Lee has collaborated on a number of projects with various brands, such as Kolon Sports, Louis Quartoze, MCM, and Nike, which involved paper toys. 2001년 디자인 쇼핑몰 텐바이텐을 창업하며 문구와 생활 소품 전반에 디자인을 결합한 상품을 조금 더 가까이에서 만날 수 있는 기회를 만들어 준 디자이너. 건축 관련 공모전에서 여러 차례 수상한 바 있는 건축학도에서 인터넷의 가능성에 매력을 느낀 뒤, 텐바이텐에 이어 재작년 새로운 온라인 커머스를 지향하는 29cm를 오픈하며 뛰어난 심미안과 감각으로 대중과 소통하고 있다.

Lee studied pottery and sculpture in college and graduate school, and also obtained his doctorate in architecture. Lee has created a number of sculptures using pottery materials, including such public artworks as the pottery mural depicting the excursion of King Jeongjo along the Cheonggye River as well as the pottery at Sapyeong Station. In addition to distributing concrete and pottery furniture to overseas clients via Design Miami/Basel, Lee continues to hold exhibitions, both solo and collective, every year because he believes art survives through communication with the world, not in isolation from it.

This up-and-coming artist is associated with a series of lyrical and feminine-looking works of pottery characterized by her signature color, Copenhagen blue. Lee is currently a writer, a designer maker, and also a designer at Hankook Chinaware. After completing her studies in pottery at Hongik University, Lee briefly worked as a designer at Atelier Bada Design. She has modernized the traditional Korean cheonghwa white pottery by painting blue patterns on its amorphous shape.

Lee and Roh co-founded Gaon Architecture in 1998, and have since handled projects of wide-ranging themes and scope, including the Geumsan House, the House of Sanjo, and the Exploratory Trail along the Bukchon Road. After studying architecture as a researcher at Kyoto University, Lim returned to Korea and worked as an architect for six years. She then went back to Japan again and finally obtained a doctorate in architecture from the Kyoto Institute of Technology. Chang is the founder of Caruso, Korea’s first-ever men’s wear fashion brand that was launched in 1987. Chang is now one of the most beloved Korean fashion designers of all time, and was dubbed the “JeanPaul Gauthier of the East” when he became the first Korean designer to join the Men’s Wear Collection in Paris in 1994. He is a pioneering figure who has elevated the profile of Korean men’s wear on the world stage.

조각 전공, 영화 음악 집단 ‘복숭아 프레젠트’의 멤버로 활동하며 다수의 영화 음악 작업에 참여했다. 취미로 가구를 만들다가 디자인에 대한 고민이 생겨 가구 풍경을 대형 사진으로 기록했고, 이와 동시에 다양한 무대와 공간을 기획하고 테이블 T1(2005)을 통해 디자이너로 이름을 알린 뒤 영화 음악가, 설치 미술가에서 영상 작가로 매번 정체성을 확장해간다.

This former sculpture major became a member of the Peach Present, a group of movie score musicians, and has since participated in the production of original sound tracks for numerous movies. While making furniture as a hobby, Chang came to develop a series of questions regarding furniture design, photographed large landscapes containing furniture, and also planned and directed various theater performances and shows. Having become known as a designer through Table T1 (2005), Chang continues to tread the boundaries between film, music, and installation art.

Jang Studied at Hongik University and the University of California at Berkeley before he co-founded WISE, an architecture studio, with Sukhee Jeon. He has completed the ABC office building, the Fortress Stone House, and the House. He won the Young Architect of Korea Award in 2011 and the First Prize in Architecture from the City of Seoul in 2011 for his work on the War and Women’s Human Rights Museum.

Jang is a specialist in interactive media art, and holds a master’s degree in digital art and interactive media from the Pratt Institute in New York. He handled the global launch show for Samsung Mobile in New York City and held a digital exhibition on samulnori. He also won the Gold Prize at the International Forum Communication Design Awards. Jang launched Dilution, a group of new media directors, in 2011, and has been involved in a variety of projects worldwide since then.

Jeong studied communication design at Parsons, and is now working as managing director of the Ladies Fashion Division at Cheil Industries. Since launching his own brand, Kuho, in 1997, he has introduced a series of trendsetting brands, including Le Beige, Hexa by Kuho, Epitaph, and Maison le Beige. He has also worked as a costume designer and art director on a number of Korean films, including Love Affair, Tell Me Something, Scandalous: Dangerous Liaisons in Joseon, as well as theater and dance productions.

After studying product design as both an undergraduate and graduate student, Jeong began his career as a product design manager at TG Sambo Computers. Afterward, he began working at Kodas Design, and has been its CEO since 2011. 디자인모올 대표. 1990년대 초 LG전자 디자인연구소에서 디자이너로 근무하고, 제품 디자인 전문 회사인 디자인모올을 설립했다. 2002년 디자인 수출에 도전, 중국 레노보의 폴더형 휴대폰 디자인 개발을 시작으로 화웨이, 유롱 등의 대기업 디자인 컨설팅과 프로젝트를 이어오고 있다. 2010년 무역의 날에 ‘백만 불 수출의 탑’을 수상하는 쾌거를 이룩한 장본인으로 한국 디자인의 세계화를 돕는 가교 역할을 하기 위해 노력하고 있다.

예일 대학교에서 그래픽디자인으로 석사 학위(MFA)를 수여받고 2004년 서울에 자신의 스튜디오인 S/O Project를 설립하며 red dot, TDC 뉴욕, TDC 도쿄, ADC, ARC 어워드 등에서 수상했다. 서울대학교 대학원과 한국예술종합학교에서 학생들을 가르치고 있으며, ARC 어워드와 ASTRID 어워드의 심사위원으로도 활동하고 있다.

Cho is currently the CEO of Design Mall. After a stint as a designer at the Design Research Institute of LG Electronics in the early 1990s, Cho went on to found Design Mall, which specializes in product design. He began exporting his designs in 2002, starting with the foldertype mobile phone design for China’s Renovo, and has since been consulting for various companies and projects, including Huawei and Yulong. Cho won the Million Dollar Exports Tower Award in 2010, and continues to serve as a key player in globalizing Korean product designs.

After obtaining a master’s degree in graphic design from Yale, Cho opened his own studio, called S/O Project, in Seoul in 2004, and has won numerous awards around the world, including the Red Dot, the TDC New York Award, the TDC Tokyo Award, the ADC Award, and the ARC Award. He now teaches students at Seoul National University and the Korea National University of Arts, in addition to serving as a judge for the ARC Awards and the ASTRID Awards.

Since launching the Miss Ji Collection in 1980, Ji has been participating in the Seoul Fashion Artists Association and the Seoul Collection every season. She won the Fashion People Award in 2000 and the Prime Minister’s Award on Textiles Day in 2011. Her brand now extends to eight shops in addition to a company headquarters. Ji also won the Best Costume Design Award at the Daejong Film Festival for her work in The Blue in You. Choi’s main interest is communication with the public. He has set the trend for architectural design in Korea for decades. A graduate of Hongik University, he has designed some of the most prominent living spaces in Korea, such as those of the Tower Palace, and also worked as art director for the Pyeongtaek Book City and Incheon International Airport Projects. Now CEO of Living Axis, Choi has been leading the revolution of living culture in Korea since he launched Living Axis in 1988. He is known for his designs that respect the inherent characteristics of the given locales and are free of unnecessary details.

Since launching Joongho Choi Studio in 2008, Choi has been producing various home appliances and living designs, including furniture and lighting. He now serves as director of design at Titot, a furniture brand for kids, and has also launched Ideal Graphy, a living design brand of his own. Since 2012, he has been directing product designs at Devo, a housing brand, in addition to teaching students at the Kaywon School of Art and Design.

CEO of Propaganda, a design studio, Choi has created posters for numerous Korean films and theater productions, including Norano, Mobius, Jisul, Pieta, Eungyo, Old Partner, 42nd Street, Guys and Dolls, and Jack the Ripper. He was also the art director at the Ansan Valley Rock Festival in 2013. He has been designing the feature exhibitions of the Korean Film Archive since 2008.

Choi has been working as a blacksmith since the age of 19. After taking the reins of the Chois’ Hardware Store in 1989, Choi has been producing unique and original items in very limited quantities. Choi helped to popularize the importance and aesthetics of keys through his work for the Lock Museum, designed by Hyo-Sang Seung in 2003, and has been running a gallery of his own that promotes the importance of steel and crafts. Choi has held numerous exhibitions on locks and keys in Korea and abroad, and won the Presidential Award at the Korea Culture and Art Awards in 2012.

Co-CEO of Void Planning, Choi is the other half of the famous designer couple, and has been interested in capturing the zeitgeist worldwide, rather than perfecting authentic Korean designs. Han is the CEO of Itda Design. Having completed his studies in product design at Hongik University. He has produced a number of products for offices, houses, and public spaces as the director of Landscape, a furniture brand. He is known for his mountain table and other items that seamlessly combine functionality and beauty while featuring simple structures that are easy to assemble and transport. He invests much of his time and effort into developing functional processes, and strives to develop designs that are as ecofriendly as possible in terms of production, use, and recycling.

Huh, a photographer, has studied at the Brooks Institute of Photography and has held two solo exhibitions and a number of group exhibitions. He submitted his work to the International Photography Awards from 2007 and 2011. Huh was named an Up-And-Coming Artist by the Bank of Korea in 2013.

Hong is an artist who writes poetry on Asian spirituality, and gives form and life to her poetry through her paintings, installations, and media art. Her upbeat and optimistic work, providing new interpretations of neon and primary colors, easily transcends the boundaries between the West and East and between ancient and modern times. She has held numerous solo and feature exhibitions in Korea, China, and Germany, in addition to winning the Lorenzo il Magnifico Award twice at the Florence Biennale and becoming an artist-in-residence at Villa Waldberta in Germany, by official invitation of the City of Munich.

CEO of 297210 Creative, Hwang completed his studies in industrial design at Seoul National University of Science and Technology, and then worked at Inno Design and Design Next. Since then, he has worked on a wide range of projects involving corporate branding, product designs, and agricultural produce packaging designs. He rose to prominence with Star 12, a pendant he created by linking 12 sheets of letter-sized paper. Since participating in the Seoul Design Week and the Seoul Design Olympics in 2007, he has been a part of a variety of feature exhibitions. He now teaches basic product design at Konkuk University.
