He has been with me since past 19 years and continues the good work. He reminds me of my youthful days, when I used to work for 12 to 16 hours a day, he is sensible, intellectual and works for 16 hours, almost all 365 days. Another person, whom I would like to mention for her contribution is architect Manisha Sovani who is with us for more than a decade. I owe my gratitude to each individual in my team.
MM: The USP of your firm… DT: We have a reputation of delivering under tight deadlines. Our design process begins with the brief from the client and revolves around the client’s lifestyle, personality and taste. With this ideology, we have been successful in designing projects, even abroad. We have designed offices and homes in Singapore, Gold Coast(Australia), Chicago and Los Angeles(USA).
MM: Tell us about your interesting ventures… DT: We are involved in temple architecture. Swami Narayan Temple at Himmatnagar is master planned by us. Also, we are fortunate to have won a competition and got a chance to design Ambedkar Bhavan, a legendary piece of art. In this project the requirement was to display Babasaheb’s achievements in a modern way. This was indeed a challenging task and we moulded a structure with a space that is serene and calm, derived from original Buddhist style. We are doing many bungalows, villas, apartment designs, townships, institutional buildings, pubic buildings: hospitals, schools, colleges or institutional complexes.
MM: Your happiest moments are in… DT: Travel, food, theatre and music. In my leisure time, I enjoy dramas and music concerts. When I was young, I hardly got 26 DESIGN MATRIX • JANUARY-FEBRUARY 2015

MM: Tell us about your mission towards making this country a better place to live in… DT: I believe in the principles of Philantrophy and in this ideology, I renovated an old institute in to a tribal school in 2007 near famous Shamalaji’s temple, Gujarat, with a vision that every child can and must attain an excellent education. This school has all the modern amenities and is named after my mother. We even have a hostel building that can accommodate around 90 students. I am proud that more than 400 tribal students study here and we attained 90% result for SSC and HSC. This school is surrounded by the Aravalli ranges, adding a scenic bliss to the environment.
MM: Your mantra of attaining success… DT: Be cool and focused. I believe that a good designer is a person with creative instincts. My advice to the students of architecture and design would be to stay more focused. One needs to be sensitive to one’s surroundings and avoid shortcuts. JANUARY-FEBRUARY 2015 • DESIGN MATRIX 27

BUNGALOW
Alluring Bungalow at Pune This bungalow is a perfect example of Neoclassicism, combining a regard for tradition and reverence for the classics with a concern for nature. All the rooms and levels of this space, are designed adhering to the Vaastu norms as per the client’s requirement. Understanding the climatic conditions of this place, huge verandahs and sit out areas were planned for family, friends and guests to cherish outdoor retreats, amongst the midst of nature. INSTITUTIONAL SPACE An Office cum R & D centre The site is at Vapi, spread over 12 acres of gently sloping land set at the foot of low hills. This massive building of merely 20,000 sqmtr, is an office cum R & D centre. Functional efficiency coupled with dynamic apperance was given prime importance while designing the building. This building is facing North, thus to avoid larger glaze elevational area and to strike perfect balance and proportion, vertical Fins were introduced. The rising pattern of the Fins symbolise the growth of the company. The overhangs at the top level have been designed bearing in mind the harsh sunlight as well as the heavy rainfall that Vapi experiences in their respective seasons. A waterbody in the form of lake is created to maintain eco balance. DGU glass was used for habital areas, while reflective glass for pendent areas.
Meril Lifescience Medical Academy Located at Vapi, about 120km from Mumbai, this building is spread over 12 acres of gently sloping land set at the foot of low hills. A Serene Home The client’s requirement was

clutter-free, minimalistic yet elegant looking triplex apartment in the Western Suburbs of Mumbai. This apartment is surrounded by the fantastic view of the expressway and encompasses two bedrooms on the lower level, a grand living and dining connecting to the kitchen, a separate prayer room on the mid-level and an open terrace on the upper level. The branding done on the glass partitions gives privacy to the cabins. Let’s step towards the show flat. The first floor leads to the 3 BHK show apartments. The tinted mirror panelling in the narrow passage of the entrance lobby makes the space look bigger. The study room looks vibrant with the wallpaper and a round colourful rug on the floor. The modular kitchen is functional and simple with lacquer, glass and quartz stone. All spaces have been thoughtfully planned. The 3d wall panelling behind the dining table creates a modern look. The flooring, bathrooms, windows has been executed to match the amenities given by the builders. The play of colours and lights in the bedrooms add glamour to the bedrooms. Thus the interiors incorporated a quirky twist to vintage elements to appease the crowds across all ages. Yoko Sizzlers, Thane The brief given by the client for Yoko Sizzlers was to create an awareness of the cuisine and redefine the brand identity through the restaurant interiors. Since all the existing outlets across the city had hugely different interiors, a strong need to link the interior concept to the food served and the epistemology of its name was the overriding factor of the new design. Few know that sizzlers are of American origin, since the name itself lends a Japanese feel. This led to a fusion interior idea mainly in terms of the materials used. The booth style seating and plain upholstery along the length of the restaurant paid homage to its American diner origin, whereas the Japanese theme was infused through elements such as Japanese apothecary or ceramic pots, real bamboo mat partitions and lamps and short green hedges used as partitions between seating areas. A highlight feature is the artwork on the entry wall, where an artist was called in to paint in-situ using the blow-pen technique seen rampantly in Japanese paintings. “Simplicity is more complex to achieve and it gives us a clear insight into the mind and design sense of space,” adds Priyank. www.sead.in

The combination of all the curves along with colour changing lights, dancing in synchrony with the music played, creates the “mayaa”. The lounge design is modern with black and white colour as the base palette with a splash of plum to highlight the bar and live performance stage. The placement of the stage and DJ console at the start conveys the lounge as a live performance and music place amongst its patrons, which was the aim of the promoters. For food lovers, the restaurant space is designed in an open terrace. Explaining the restaurant design, Ar. Ajay and his team out smarted this challenge, with an inviting light colour palette and splashes of colour in upholstery and soft furnishings. The main door opens to face a stepped cabinet with niches that acts as a clever partition for the main seating and also provides a good amount of storage. “We created a spacious realm with a high gloss laminated finished dark veneer and to balance the same the walls were left white. The highlight of the room is the L shaped, custom designed and the fabricated crystal chandelier, which becomes the main source of light as lit by LED bulbs. The chandelier runs from one corner of the living room, turning on to the dining area and creates an end mark in front of the dining storage cabinet. The shutter of the unit opposite the chandelier is finished with a mirror, which reflects the chandelier and adds more length to it,” explains Ajay. The living room opens into a terrace. A small covered sit-out was planned for the tea parties that the clients hold. The diffuse lights on the terrace sets the perfect mood for entertaining the guests. The idea was to design a sculpture, which becomes a water fountain, whenever the wash basin is in use. This has become a fascinating feature.” The kitchen area

The warm wood compliments the white walls and the colour of furnishing makes the room very cheerful. former occupant. The John Hardy Group analysed the property prior to its purchase and project managed its renovation. The property offers a new destination for locals and tourists alike to meet, play, socialize, and work, amid extensive redevelopment plans in this SoCal community. Indidesign’s concept for the latest Double Tree by Hilton introduces a unique interpretation of the West Coast lifestyle to the increasingly popular Marina del Rey area. “Working with Vito Lotta, Senior Director of Design for Hilton Worldwide was so much fun. magine a penthouse perched atop a luxury apartment complex in one of the greenest areas in the city. Imagine a roomy and
airy apartment, which has sunlight filtering in through large bay windows and where the view changes dramatically from day to night. Imagine a bachelor residence that is comfortable, warm and welcoming, and yet, modern, youthful and minimalistic. Designed by elitaire, a unit of erstwhile Dolphin Group, it brings together a contemporary sensibility, and yet keeps alive the individuality of the owner. The brief was to retain a modern appeal, and yet give the apartment a sense of space. The use of colour palettes like whites, greys, hues of yellow and certain sections of tile work gives a playful element to the minimalist design. The basic layout of the space conceived is a fusion of contemporary design, using clean straight lines and along with elements of industrial furniture. Yet, the apartment also retains touches of individuality and splashes of colour. The original penthouse doors have been replaced by glass doors throughout the apartment to enhance the view of the Aravalli Hills.
