estive season has arrived, the colourful Navaratri season must have cheered each one of you and now Diwali is round the corner. Design Matrix blow up the fervor and zeal of festivities with another grand celebration. We are delighted to announce that we are celebrating our 5th Anniversary this edition and on this great occasion, I am honored to converse with Maneka Sanjay Gandhi, the Indian Union Cabinet Minister for Women & Child Development and the Chairperson of People For Animals (PFA) and I plea all my designer friends across the globe to support the Fundraiser for Elephants, organized by her for Wildlife SOS, an organization that rescue the animals and offer care to them. Our cover story in this edition is simply unique. Some of you might be wondering, how this subject becomes a part of a design magazine? Just give a thought on the universal truth that cruelty to animals definitely have a significant and irreversible impact on human health, economy and environment. Elephants are our country’s heritage animal, yet they are exploited, hunted, used and abused. There is an urgent need to educate people about the plight of elephants and create resources and infrastructure to protect these gentle giants. Around 50 well known artists and the celebrities, whom we love the most, are supporting this cause and all the funds gathered at the Elephant Art event, to be held immediately after Diwali season, curated by Sunaina Anand of Art Alive Gallery, New Delhi will be handed over to Wildlife SOS. We also bring to you interesting fun filled spaces for shopping and merry making. The international retail space and hospitality space in this edition is simply mesmerizing. Know more about the Ply industry through our power packed conversations, with the CMD of Uniply Industries Ltd. Are you wondering what to gift your friends this Diwali season, instead of sweets, I would suggest you to make your friends happy with an interesting book authored by Aparna Piramal Raje, “Working Out of the Box”, and I am sure those who read it will love it and will learn to balance the professional and personal life taking instances from the lives of leading CEO’s featured in this book. Well for those, who would like to steal the heart of your friends with some home decoration gifts, the Diwali specials listed in the alluring products page will be your right choice. Hope you like it! Wish you all a Happy and a safe Diwali and we thank everyone who supported us in the last five years and look forward for the same in near future. Soon bringing in pleasant surprises, just for you and enjoy reading Design Matrix!

SOCIAL

RESPONSIBILITY The Elephant is considered to be a friend of man, a symbol of friendliness, sacrifice, dignity, majesty, prosperity and luck, but the sad part is we ignore their plight on streets, zoos or in temples. Let us join our hands together to save these endangered giants. Words: Marilyn Madathil Photo credits: People For Animals (PFA) & Wildlife SOS

lephants are folk divinities in three major religions: Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism. Gautama, the Buddha descended in the form of a white elephant. Mothers of Jain Thirathankas saw elephants in their dreams. Ganesha is our most

worshipped God, but have we as humans ever paid any attention to the fact that many temples keep elephants on concrete, chained all the time and they are often given the wrong food? We love glaring at them in the zoo or circus and at these places they swing between no exercise or too much exercise; prolonged periods of sedentary confinement when they are not on the job and overexertion under unnatural conditions. These poor prisoners suffer from severe health problems like arthritis, foot rot, joint pains; obesity to unnatural thinness depending on the whims of these authorities and their mahouts. They live like condemned convicts till they die, performing degrading and unnatural actions such as kneeling, lifting their trunks at least 300 times per day to entertain the onlookers. They are forced to eat sweets, cooked rice or any oily foods given to them. The elephants stand in unventilated areas in these spaces and sleep on hard floors. Design Matrix converse with Maneka Sanjay Gandhi, the Indian Union Cabinet Minister for Women & Child Development and the Chairperson of People For Animals (PFA), regarding the Fundraiser for Elephants of India, organised by her and PFA for Wildlife SOS to support the Elephant Rescue Centre and offer care to the rescued elephants.

DM: As an environmentalist, how can we make our EARTH A BETTER PLACE TO LIVE IN…? Maneka Gandhi: There are thousands of ways to improve our current conditions. First, we must admit that we are going down the wrong path: this model of development is making each one of us unhappy. The Earth is now unliveable for more than 50 % of humans with polluted water, air and land. But most importantly, we must recognise that all species are like cogs in a giant wheel. When we destroy one species, the machine starts to fall apart. Every ant, every bird, every elephant is important to our own well being. Therefore, we need to nurture their habitat and them, if we are to survive.

Take us to the days when you anchored the weekly television program Heads and Tails and the overall response and experience you got through this show… MG: Heads and Tails was the first animal show of its kind in the world. We showed all the cruelty that took place in the meat industry and in other ways that we use animals. Even now, ten years later I meet people who turned vegetarian because of that show and it makes me feel that the effort of 5 years was worth it. It would be good to start it again, Elephant by Paresh Maity

but with so many channels competing for attention, I am not sure it would have the same impact.

About Wildlife SOS The mission of Wildlife SOS is to protect India’s wildlife. The organization was established in 1995 by founders Kartick Satyanarayan and Geeta Seshamani. While Wildlife SOS was initially known for its pioneering work to eradicate the 400 year old brutal practice of “dancing bears” across India, the organization now has active projects to help other species like elephants, leopards, tigers, snakes and other animals. In 2014, Wildlife SOS received international recognition for rescuing an elephant named Raju, who cried when his chains were removed after 50 years of servitude and suffering. Most recently, Wildlife SOS launched a campaign to rescue the last 67 elephants remaining in India’s circuses. n addition to being a co founder of Wildlife SOS, and animal welfare group in India and perhaps

This will continue to remain our way of doing business. Uniply already has an excellent partner network in the South of India and some great counters in the West and North. We are in the process of redrawing this network across West and North by giving our existing counters more opportunities for growth and also looking for new dealers, distributors in areas that we have historically not covered. This activity has occupied a bulk of my time over the past few months and it has given me first hand feedback for cutting down wastages and re-engineering our business cycles.

pioneering spirit and constant development are the main themes running through the 140-year his-

tory of this Austrian department store. This combines design quality and a feel-good atmosphere with boutique character, meeting demands for flexibility and a culture of experience. With planning getting under way in the fall of 2014, the interior designers from Blocher Blocher Partners faced a challenge: to concentrate the multifaceted world of Kastner & Ohler on two floors and at the same time to develop succinct design elements for each department. They settled on a consistent design principle of several layers that can be adjusted according to the wares on display. Thus the individual department in a loft-like arrangement has a visible character with the design supporting each array of products.

A warm welcome with flair – The entrance At the entrance, broad display windows with an asymmetrical design to attract passers-by. An inset video screen on the ground floor and a large image frame on the first floor above ground catch the eye; the sales floors with their diverse departments, their own identities – young fashion, women and men fashion and the kids’ department – all invite exploration.

Nuances and accents –Young Fashion The young fashion departments on both floors are defined by tones of grey; the flooring in the women’s department is done in light shades, while the men’s department flooring is somewhat darker. The high, open ceiling is done in a medium grey tone and features a suspended rail grid for flexible presentation options. Another eye-catcher: the trapezoidal wall painting, which seamlessly blends into an embedded carpet in black and white. Aside from the painting, the walls are either decorated with stucco or painted grey. Suspended or standing in front of the walls are framed with flattened corners, which emphasize the high ceilings. The frames are used in the central area as a linking element – to create zones and present accessories.

White Box – The modern-classic departments The modern-classic departments take an L-shaped turn opposite the young fashion sales floors, from the entrance to the very back of the store – delineated by woodlook flooring. The interplay of white ceilings and floors creates the effect of a so-called White Box. In keeping with the principle of multi-dimensional, the spouse receives an additional depth through a shelf system in front of the walls. In the women’s department, wooden wall recesses and grey wall

CINEMATIC EXPERIENCE Cinema is a very young art form with extraordinary techniques and impressive special effects. The concept of the conventional movie hall has gone a long way in recent times. Interiors play a vital role and Mumbai based Architectural firm Arris Architects Pvt Ltd , explains the crucial makeover of Inox and Fun Cinemas that is thrilling, comfortable and will certainly make your visit worthy.

reating a larger-than-life experiences, designing public spaces, copious in scale and volume, giving

importance to interiors and its allied elements, makes the design approach at Arris Architects, Mumbai; people sensitive and program conscious. Ar. Subhashish Modi, Principal and Director with his partner, Ar. Satish Shetty, Director, strongly believes in bringing in-depth understanding and application of concepts with valued insights to every project, they cater to. The Cinema halls are the most visited places for entertainment, fun and relaxation. These designers bring a package of magic with more masti for movie lovers. Let’s enjoy!

of the flagship properties of Fame Cinemas in Inorbit mall, Malad; it was a huge responsibility for Arris Architects to translate the aspirations, expectations and the vision that it stood for. Partial renovation and part restoration project, the program required creating a solution for six screen multiplex with one Gold Class and a central box office. Elaborating the design, Ar. Modi adds, “The biggest challenge was to keep cinemas running, fully functional and completely operational, both logistically and economically. Entire lobby had to be divided into phases

uled during renovation. It also meant that the design had to be such that it could be executed in phases as per work progress without its integrity being hampered.” The revised layout required re-arrangement of core functions such as F & B counters and allied functions, which included realigning existing services to a new location. It was also impossible to check the configuration and condition of the other services such as fire fighting and HVAC without a start of demolition. Hence, the design had to take into consideration all these factors at the same time not let these parameters influence the aesthetical requirement of the space design. Giving utmost importance to the patrons and their experience of leisure and relaxation, the central lobby, a common spill-out space was intentionally kept large, lavish and luminous! To tie the varied proportions of height and their utilities together, fabric drapes, cascading down the roof, were instrumental in giving a continuous binding illusion.

Building an identity “Our aim was not only create an impression, but a unique one in itself. We were looking for an element that is unique and yet broadly encompassing. While looking for inspirations, we found one in the form of fingerprints. It speaks of something which everyone possesses and yet is unique to 52 DESIGN MATRIX • NOVEMBER-DECEMBER 2015

one,” explains Ar. Modi. The chandelier in plan uses a part of fingerprint pattern as an artistic motif, which is then carried forward onto adjacent walls as a reflective element constituting a design language. The back wall of the concession counters and box office use it as a design emblem and once again ties together all fragments of visual memory. It has been carried forward in cinema sidewalls a continuation of the design language throughout the experience of cinema. “We believe that the aim of renovations should not only be to glitter up the spaces but improving circulation and user functionality. Previous layout of the theatre lobby had a central F&B Counter (Concession Counter) which divided the lobby into two parts and thereby reducing the available space in a linear lobby and volume and also reducing the visibility of the cinema entrances. It made the space cluttered up and claustrophobic even though there was space and volume available for exploitation,” further adds Ar. Modi. Arris devised a layout, pushing back the concession counter towards the end of the lobby and freeing up the central double height volume. The space freed by shifting previous concession counter is used as a seating area; making end user, the focal point of the entire design. The lobby area is equidistant and visible from this point. Placed directly below the chandelier, one can sit, appreciate and take in the soothing ambience of the space. The placing of F & B kiosks in low height areas near the entrance was to make sure that first impression is always that of the space design and not of the kiosks. However, being close to the entrance, they are easily accessible once a person enters and proceeds towards the seating area. Entire lobby is divided into three parts as per height: low height at entrance, double height in the centre and again low height towards the end. A drape element was introduced, which originates at the lobby entrance as group of lines running on both sides along the length of the lobby radiating out in the double height space forming a volume enclosure housing a central chanNOVEMBER-DECEMBER 2015 • DESIGN MATRIX 53

delier. The climax of the running drapes culminates into a flood of light that livens up the place by custom made, chandelier. It’s a composition of ceiling suspended acrylic tubes with an inlay of miniature LED lights were randomly infused within the organic sequence to appease the soothing semblance. The entire renovation, from ground zero to up, was completed in commendable time of ten months, in spite of frequent logistic irregularities. Major work was carried out at nights to aid the functions of the multiplex during the day. An area of 3500 Sq m was successfully executed under skilled supervised inspection. Clients were immensely satisfied with the outcome of the renovation and it has become a reference point for future projects.

Creating a lasting impression Fun Cinemas, Andheri was one of the first and frequently visited multiplexes in the

city. However, in the megacity that is constantly transforming and the rise in competition posed a struggle for its relevance. It became necessary to adapt and upgrade to changing times and elevate the cinema experience to a completely new level. A four screen multiplex seating approximately 1000 patrons is accessible from two cinema lobbies, one low height lobby and another with a double height at different levels. Renovation goes a step further than innovation to consider the past and prepare for the future. Arris Architects were posed with the challenging task of reviewing existing concepts, functions, services and renovating the entire design with a futurist, yet contextual outlook. It was a chal-

lobbies were opened out, allowing everyone to get a glimpse and feel of the ambience. Lower concession lobby with lower heights was visualized as trajectories of lines in derived from the Fibonacci sequence around the main concession counter; expressed purely in the form of lights in the ceiling as well as reflection on the floor providing a visual envelope for backlit onyx counter. An intimate play of geometric patterns in shades of stone veneer provides a warm backdrop for the comfortable seating sofas. Cinema corridors are flanked by a series of suspended acrylic panels of different shades, textures of copper; backlit with LED lights from the ceiling enabling one to feel the texture without touching it. Arrays of these panels are also suspended above the concession counter of the upper level concession lobby with integrated signage. Backlit tiger onyx front accentuates exclusiveness of the F&B counter. The walls are clad with high gloss wooden panelling with steel inlays in horizontal direction. Auditoriums are an elite enclosure subtly shifting the focal point to the cinema watching experience; accentuating its cosiness and comfort. Restroom layouts were de-congested and layout was simplified giving a spacious feel. Toilets were clad with a rich combination of marble with Armani Grey. Even though heights were as low as eight feet in the restrooms, new layout helped the space look more spacious.

Lines, light and texture Analogous to movie making; the complete experience attempts to create a spatial drama with lines and lights, patterns and palettes, textures and materials and the result is a one equally engaging, entertaining and enchanting spatial experience. Existing cinema lobbies were in contrast with each other one being low and one being a double height was not able to connect the patron with a cinematic experience and barely catered to its functional requirement. Food counters were designed in ‘L’ shape which did not provide a clear 56 DESIGN MATRIX • NOVEMBER-DECEMBER 2015

view of the available menu and it was also in conflict with the queuing directions. Back areas were insufficient due to lack of space and access. Cinemas corridors had become dingy due to lack of lighting and the design of the corridors needed an upgrade. It became important to re-visualize the complete project from point zero. Lift lobby was included in the design scheme forming a preface to the lobby space. The ambience in the lobby provided a niche setting similar to a lounge. Cinema corridors were panelled to minimize the structural offsets which accentuated the length of the corridor also helping to identify cinema entrances effectively with use of suitable signage. One of the four auditoriums was equipped with Dolby Atmos sound system; providing a new upgraded cinema experience. Thicker and more porous seat fabric increasing the cushioning, the comfort and wooden armrests are detail highlights of the cinema experience. Recliners were coupled with details such as ornate lamp shades. This renovation project was a great success in projecting a design language which stood for the new age cinema revolution; trying to connect to user at a subconscious level. It has contributed to further strengthen the credibility of the practice.

and shimmering candles all around the lobby Apart from the deluxe rooms the hotel also has six executive suites, business class rooms for the modern traveler and an exclusive Prive collection. The rooms here spell the ultimate in bespoke indulgence and hospitality where one leaves with a sense of belonging and a yearning to return. The two types of deluxe rooms cover an area of 345 sq ft & 525 sq ft respectively. The design of the room segregates the flow of the service movement and use of the guest are thereby leaving no room for any form of disturbance whatsoever. The metamorphosis of color, texture, its evolution and effervescence will lift the ambience of the room to a superlative degree and rediscover a new concept of guest room design. Huge windows facing the pools with ceiling hung seating provide an extended view of the outside greenery. A distinct feature of the rooms is the bath areas, which is an extension of the room itself. However it can be enclosed as a separate area with sliding doors. These sliding doors are actually art walls which add to the decor of the rooms. and harmony. It is believed that interiors influence the experience of our daily life and while designing a spacious and clutter free home for D’souza family, the designers smartly applied simplicity with a classy touch. While adding colours to your interiors, it is necessary to keep one’s eye and ear open to get the maximum out of whatever one put around in the house and these young designers chose white as a base colour for the decor, blending other warm hues as per the tastes of the family members of this home. The entrance space has a waiting area, which is laminated and Duco painted. The designers added splendour in this space with siporex carving.

The bright hues– lavender, peach, brown, purple and red make this home colourful and beautiful. A sticker of Ganesha was created at the entrance with the combination of metal plate laminate and Duco paint, near the main door, as a welcome note. The grills, curtains and the furnishings all were synchronised and were customised. The colourful wall in the living area in peach colour, frosted mirror and wallpaper added a royal touch. The kitchen area was created using a dark shade with an extensive storage requirement. The two bedrooms are filled with fun and frolic elements. The first bedroom being small, a hung bed was added with a wardrobe. The second bedroom was created in yellow, with a crocodile yellow laminate and the same crocodile pattern was followed in curtain and bedcovers that were customised. to enhance the form. The custom fabrics complete the personal touch, giving the room a unique identity. The balcony forms an extended part of the room, forming a place to unwind. Intended for occupancy by the boys of the family, the sons’ bedroom design is given a male characteristic, keeping in mind that it will be used by children who with age shall develop a mature taste. White dominates the larger part of the room; with accents of red and black in the design make a bold statement. The shelf unit adds a sense of playfulness, enabling the display of personal belongings, maintaining the balance of the space without being overbearing. The fabrics in the room follow the design with red and black colours giving identity to beds, the wallpaper tying the space together. The balcony serves for a great view, with a suspended wicker egg chair making for a good place to hang out. The design of the daughters’ room is given a feminine touch, influenced by flowing lines, being the bedroom for the family’s daughters. The angular lines on the wall create a flow of vision, and distinguish the various finishes. The headboard is clad in leather followed by green backpainted glass setting the theme, topped with complimenting wallpaper that flows from one surface to the next. Maintaining white on most of the hard surfaces, the fabrics carry the green well to balance the space. The balcony makes for a space to relax and enjoy the view. Maintaining sobriety, Mr. Ansari’s room maintains minimum furniture, with a single bed done in veneer, the wardrobe has mirror clad shutters giving an airy feeling to the space. Working through difference at various stages, the resulting design received a lot of praise from the clients, and team SDA is delighted with all the appreciation for an elegant design they created for this home. arch@sdadesigns.co.in

Your front door should fit in architecturally with the rest of your home. But you can take the opportunity to let this it say something about your personality as well. ‘Simple is difficult!’ Their projects express their expertise in transforming ideas into reality, simply with remarkable ease. DR. Kothari’s Residence at NIBM Road, Pune; is spread across 2000 sq ft, follows a simple design with specific requirements like accommodating the medicine box, an elaborate bookshelf and emphasizes the overall setting in a niche. The double height living area of this home offers one a spectacular view of the city lights from the terrace. The beautiful hanging chandelier is simply an awe factor, adding a luxurious spell to the decor. Custom-made stone mural (human face) oriented towards the main door, the entrance door with clear veneer lamination, the artifacts and a cleverly concealed cupboard meant for knickknacks is something that one would certainly fall in love with. The stone cladding in the guest room also serves as the bed back. An exuberant feel is created here by hanging a frameless painting. Interesting play of white Corian and laminate, adds to a spell casting ambience in this plush home. The master bedroom is designed with a design sense that is mind blowing. The bookshelf serves as an enthralling design element. A wall in the master bedroom with chequered pattern unit (in black and white), houses the dressing, specific stor-

The flooring has black Italian tile with matte finish to give it an identity. The same tile continues as the bed back on the wall. The T. Stupendous Home Another home designed by JJ Design has a very fresh and contemporary look with predominantly white and grey colour scheme. Kamlesh Bhandari’s Residence at Chinchwad, Pune; sprawling around 1550 sq ft became one of the biggest challenges for this duo to counter the unusual layout of the flat. Being spread out, it gave a feeling of railway coaches laid out end to end. Hence, unifying elements were thought of in terms of wall, ceiling and flooring treatments, right from the entrance lobby. Elaborating the fine details, Jitesh adds, “As is the practice in JJ Design, every minute thing was detailed and customized, right from the sofa to the dining table, which were designed to suit the size and shape of the room and to fit into the theme of the decor. Various spaces were re-aligned to make maximum use of the available space. For example, a walk-in dressing area was added to the children’s room by making alternate arrangements for the toilet, elsewhere. The servant’s room was converted into the much needed study.” The designers creative vision and systematic handling of projects have earned them a place not only in the interior design arena, but in the architectural field as well.

Their scope of work ranges from designing the bungalow to developing a landscaped area on the outside as well as creating a beautiful environment inside the structure. Though not flamboyant, their design displays freshness of approach, distinct creativity and toned energy.

Know the designers After completing their education in interior design, the duo honed their skill set under the guidance of other eminent professionals from the field for six years, before branching out on its own. Subsequently, since 2007, they have developed and trained their own set of agencies and consultants who share their quest of perfection. They are successful in handling residential as well as commercial projects. They seek to attain perfection, first by filtering out design ideas between the two of them, and then by streamlining their design with detailing for efficient execution. While planning for every detail meticulously, the client’s requirements and likes are considered foremost. Working Out of the Box, authored by Aparna Piramal Raje is a must read for everyone. It will certainly drive one towards being disciplined and principled in this technological world. “Technology shapes the contours of our daily lives, but most of us complain about its ubiquity and pervasiveness. It was interesting to observe that CEOs, I interviewed follow strict guidelines on the use of technology—whether email conference calls or videoconferencing. These guidelines differ greatly from each other; what was notable was the discipline with which they adhered to their preferred standards, so that they were not held hostage by technology,” explains Aparna The 40 CEOs and their work spaces are indeed fascinating and these portraits offer lesson of leadership from diverse pool of subjects. These inspiring stories also reveal the core relation between design, environment of a space and its impact on the results. “The book’s emphasis on connecting tangible workspace design with intangible assets, both compelling and differentiated,” says Anand G Mahindra, Chairman & Managing Director, Mahindra Group. aparna@aparnapraje.com
