I salute, late A.P.J Abdul Kalam for all the inspiration; I have derived after reading his ideologies. The above quoted words often encouraged me and have boosted my confidence. The last two months were filled with hard work, fun and creativity, planning an exciting issue for our readers on one hand and organizing a mega event for the students of interior designing on the other.

We are glad that Design Matrix made a new history in the world of design with Designopedia, 2015; a reality show in the world of interiors. We just had a single motto behind this endeavor and that was to allow the young generation to rack their brains and interact with the “DESIGN GURUS.” My special jadoo ki jhappi to Harsha Kotak, the brain behind this event for all her encouragement and support offered while planning this event and making it a grand success. Sincere thanks to Ar. Ninad Tipnis, Anant Bhat, Aparna Piramal Raje and Rohit Ghuste for spending your precious time with us and the students; all your thoughts and design principles were indeed inspirational.

This issue is special and dedicated to all our student readers and the colleges who took keen interest and participated in this competition and for those who did not show the same this time, yet I am sure after reading ‘My Space,’ all the other colleges will come forward and I can foresee Designopedia, 2016 making a new record.

ARK: Architecture is a very personalized and client centric profession. It requires analysing the clients brief and understanding his latent needs.

They look at us for new ideas, trends, best practices, and technological innovations despite being well aware of the global trends. DM: Tell us about your first project as an independent designer.

ARK: After establishing my independent practice, I started contacting acquaintances and family informing them about my venture and merely working on a bedroom or even a bathroom at times. Gradually I began designing stand alone apartments and low rise buildings in the outskirts of Mumbai, such as Kalyan, Badlapur and Thane. My client’s noticed my dedication towards their projects and hard work that went with it. I believe that if an opportunity knocks on your door and you are not there to open it, it would not wait but instead knock at some other door. I was, and yet am always eager to try new things every day, as well as learn with each project.

Marine Plaza Hotel, earlier Bombay International Hotel at Marine Drive in Mumbai, was another feather in our cap. The biggest challenge there was that an existing residential structure had to be turned into a five star hotel without demolition. The central atrium, a chowk with staircases and drainage pipes going through, had no open space for a swimming pool, leaving us with the only option - the terrace. The need for natural light in the atrium surfaced the idea of a glass bottom pool.

The idea behind the design of Shreepati Arcade, completed in 2002, was that the client wanted to build the (then) tallest building. Truly Iconic Designed by ARK, 96 Iconic Tower in Colombo, Sri Lanka; is dedicated to the winners of 1996 Cricket World Cup. The building facade is designed with a ball balanced between four bats to commemorate the achievements of the Sri Lankan cricketers with signature residential along with indoor cricket facility, hall of fame, museum, observatory and specialty restaurant. The mixed-use project is an amalgamation of residential units with retail outlets and public space. Despite the various uses and users stacked vertically, each has been provided individual and independent functioning. Designated parking areas, different access elevators and lobbies, and independent services ensure minimal overlap between the different users. Recently, Shreepati Edifice (Pvt.) Ltd, a unit of leading Indian real estate developer Shreepati Group, has signed an agreement with Sri Lanka’s Board of Investment (BoI) to invest US $ 330 million to construct this mixed development project. This high-rise iconic tower will be the landmark and the tallest building in the country. With an approximate height of 363 meters, 96 Iconic Tower shall be twice as tall as the current tallest building in Sri Lanka.

HIGH RISE RESIDENTIAL Green Design Ekta Tripolis, the new landmark in the western suburbs of Mumbai stretches over three 36 storey residential towers across 14,00,000 sq ft. Designed in sleek lines and smooth contours, contemporary spaces and top line amenities give it the perfect compact feel required.

The use of high performance glass and glazing on all orientations provide cost effectiveness (low –e insulated frames), especially during the summer. Direct heat is reduced with the help of balconies and projections that are provided on every level creating an offset. Glittering Sphere The Bharat Diamond Bourse project had started in the 1980s and changed many hands before it finally progressed to ARK in the early 2000s. Located in the suburban commercial hub of Bandra – Kurla Complex, Bharat Diamond Bourse had a distinguished architectural character and is one of the largest commercial complexes in India. The challenge was to revamp considering the revised utility requirements, which involved detailed site analysis of the existing structure and studying the previous drawings, without making major structural changes.

Spread over 20 acres, the Bharat Diamond Bourse consists of a total of 8 towers, each scaling 9 storey tall. The total constructed area is 2,000,000 sq ft, with an addition of a 1,000,000 sq ft basement area with a car park for roughly 1800 cars.

Treasury Operations The Axis Bank branch located at Gole Market, New Delhi encompasses a total of 33,000 sq ft. Spread over two floors the workspaces and cabins are well defined and balanced. The space incorporates the various functions and spaces of the branch, which include the chairman and other vice presidents cabins to the open employee floor space, dining areas, as well as storage rooms. The board rooms and meeting rooms at the Axis Bank Branch have been designed to convert with the need of the space. Foldable walls and loose furniture allow the spaces to be converted from smaller spaces for closed door meetings to larger spaces for employee training programmes. The collapsible walls neatly stack up on the sides, ensuring an unobstructed view of the entire space.

r. Vivek paces with us to a farm house, a retail store and an office space that has a new sense of aesthetics and beauty. Speaking on his design

philosophy, Vivek says “I strongly believe in build to suit architecture where I design for the 3 Cs- Client, Context and the Climate.

Blissful Excellence The client wanted an eclectic touch in the interiors fused into the contemporary theme. The concept plan for the landscape revolves around the diagonal axis, which unifies the entire site. The landscape features a Neem tree at the centre of the site, the water feature and the building block in unison with visually connected axis. Situated at the Ansal Villa, Satbari near Chattarpur; the site is linear and the periphery of the site is dotted with all eucalyptus trees. A detailed landscaping is developed, keeping in mind the soil conditions, climate and the sun direction. The tall trees (both evergreen and deciduous) planted along the periphery secures the farmhouse from the outside and provides the texture to the horizon. The pond in the eastern court shaded by the Neem tree is graced by the presence of an abstract art piece in white marble in stark contrast with the outdoor greens. The southern landscape has essentially accommodated the flower garden, vegetable garden and the orchard.

A double height lobby with a water feature in the centre leads one to the living, dining and study areas. The rear block of the building consists of four bedrooms with lavish toilets.

This block accommodates the dinning and kitchen on the ground floor and the family lounge and pantry on the first floor. Large balconies and verandas on the rear; the front and the terrace gardens above the living room open the building to the lush green outdoors.

The U-shaped plan of the building ensemble helps in creating two inclusive courts on the eastern and western flanks of the building. Volumetrically the farm house building may be visualised as a play of interlocking cubes and planes.

Preserving Heritage Samsaara is located in the elegant art Deco building constructed in the 1930s, a stone’s throw away from the Gateway of India.

A glass frontage allows you to peek inside the allwhite, subtly-lit store. The Zen decor style, neutral settings lets the clothes steal the show. White and gold are used to enhance the clothes. Elaborating the design experiences, Ar. Vivek adds, “The biggest challenge was to virtually tie the two levels together. The space is meant to indulge your senses and induce you to shop. The voluminous space is Samsaara’s biggest USP.” On the ground level the display system runs wall to wall and comprises wood and steel racks. The central space remains uncluttered. The central section on the ground floor is a prime space for display. A wood clad column joins the ground and the mezzanine levels. The wooden staircase takes you to the mezzanine floor, where more merchandise is displayed.

in front of it. The trial rooms on the ground floor has a wall clad in white leather, a large mirror, brown leather chairs, a wooden floor and a white rug.

A wood clad column spanning both the levels is a feature that’s hard to ignore. The wood ceiling, where the column ends is circling in space. The cove above this false ceiling is used to hide the light. A part of the wood clad columns flank a feature wall, lined in brown leather.

Perfect Office The Max Group office space follows a modern concept of design that consists of three blocks in a linear manner. The use of modern furniture and workstations, gives a contemporary look through the interiors and finishes. The ground floor level of the blocks consists of individual reception areas, cafeterias, and the remaining portion as an office space with workstations and cabins. The upper floors house entire office areas and cabins, with meeting rooms and library spaces.

The invigorating Zen courts in the reception areas cordially invite one to the office and add an interesting element at the entrance of the blocks. The circulation area has been kept to a minimum and is controlled, hence increasing the workable space and giving an undisturbed functioning in all the areas. The workstations located in the centre solve the purpose of being monitored, and thoroughly distribute natural light throughout the floor plate, illuminating the interior and thus minimizing the use of artificial lighting systems. The modern and contemporary design aspect of the interiors can be seen through simple geometric lines that are complemented by a monochromatic scheme along with monolithic soothing finishes, which create a calm and relaxing ambience conducive for budding ideas. An element of contrast is added to the space through the dark brown finish used in the columns, and by highlighting niches and certain areas and focal points on the floor. The cafeteria space, which has been worked out on a concept of minimal lines, acts as a space for the employees to unwind.

Emphasis is given to the ceiling and walls, leaving the floor plate clutter free; the dynamic surface treatments induce mental vigour, and textured paints and wallpapers on natural themes and motifs, add vibrancy and vitality.

Know the designer Ar. Vivek is a graduate from the College of Architecture, Chandigarh. he logo represents the idea of ‘picking’ your favourite dishes. The customer can choose from a wide

range of options, including the amount of rice and wasabi, the size of seafood pieces, and other toppings and sauces to suit their preferences. So far, large ‘Sushiro’ stores have been able to respond to a large amount of orders due to their operational excellence and the idea was to extend this

excellence to a smaller-sized restaurant to fulfill detailed orders rapidly. In order for the customers to ‘pick and eat’ –tumamigui in Japanese- the food while they decide what to order, various small dishes are placed on the round counter table. The self-service cutlery is raindrop-shaped, making it easy to ‘pick and eat’ food; also, the plates form a flower-like shape when placed on the tray. This raindrop shape is inspired by

One of the key aspects of this interior space is the use of natural elements and true finishes throughout the space and the exposed RCC finish provided in the ceiling, which is not totally covered with false ceilings, exemplifies it. The use of natural stone finished walls and floors, wood and veneer floor; panelling and grass flooring keeps the interiors of this home grounded.

The surprise element of this project lies in the fact that the designer duo, just took a time span of four months to complete this project. The smart use of art highlights the spaces, for instance – the large antique wooden clock in the living room or the abstract wood lampshade in the family space; all add a sense of aesthetics to their respective context.

One of the things that one would take home, after visiting this house is a sense of belonging coming from the fact that no space is designed just for its sake and one can feel the comfort in all the spaces, be it the terrace, the balcony or even the corridors and porches. egodes@gmail.com

The Thematic Office The Booking.com offices worldwide are spaces that are high on energy and yet casual and contextual in their expression. The clients wanted their office to be reflective of the regions they are involved in and briefed AVA to add regional identity to this space. Not being a very large office, the main brief was to have meeting spaces up front and segregated work hall space inside. Elaborating the details, Ar. Vistasp adds, “We picked up a deliberate North Indian theme accentuated with Rajasthani Arches in an image like sequence at the entry of the office work hall, from the reception. The large conference room door has a seemingly carved rich polished door appearance and the meeting rooms will lure anyone with its different themes, geographically and contextually related

to travel destinations and contemporary minimalism. But the piece de resistance is the booth seating in the central work hall, themed as a Rajasthani Palki.”

The design stage had many challenges on its way to an extent with the segmental nature of the site and the need to accommodate numbers as well spaciousness. The site conditions, including entry and emergency exits also changed during the site development, adding further challenges to the spatial definition.

The most eclectically planned cafe appears to be a passenger train bogey at one end of the work hall and this blend in the element of fun and travel in this space.

One will be mesmerised with the gorgeous pink and grey setting. This space is synonymous with functionality and implements the theme of ‘back to basics’, in the work hall.

Amongst the various features that were developed and adapted to local context where the bison panelled wall with inset graphics in the work hall and the featured pendant octopus like lights for adding an eclectic touch to the work environment. The play of open and exposed ceiling provided the kind of height variation and sense of sequence that make the office look interesting. The flooring varying from hard spotless white vitrified to sombre monochromatic greys, cast a perceptible feel in the overall decor.

The favourite area again of this office is the cafe, where the walls were finished in black and white collage on one side and a rustic texture on the other. “The main design challenges were to translate the original design intent of the European architects into a site context within a fixed time and cost budget. Therefore the sourcing of materials and their viability from a durability point of view were prime concerns,” explains Ar. Vistasp.

In terms of occupancy, the density on all 4 floors is higher than most other corporate offices but due to the open planning of the office and the use of compact modular furniture the overall aesthetic is not disturbed. The large uninterrupted span of the ceiling adds to the feeling of immensity, balancing the impact of the quantity of furniture on the floor. In order to complete the execution within a timeline of 120 days, the design team decided to make use of elegant and efficient glass partitioning systems, suspended ceiling systems, carpet tiles and modular furniture.

The planning is done in order to optimize the daylight received in the space with optical sensors in the LED lights that assess the daylight received. The cabins and meeting spaces also have occupancy sensors for the lights. The air-conditioning is done using a VRF system, which is an intuitive technology and is most efficient in the consumption of water and power. The materials used for finishing are conflict free and sustainable, also used with longevity in mind.

The approach with respect to surface finishes was - vertical simplicity. All the soft boards, whiteboards and laminates were used as whole panels, vertically clad in order to move away from the standard ‘half-height panelled’ look seen in most of the contemporary offices. The challenge of acoustic permeability was addressed by using soundabsorbent material, in place of regular softboard panels. The colour scheme is a play of contrast with darker pine for the panelling, a lighter oak and white shade for the rest of the furniture. A usage of greys in the ceiling offsets the white grid and a there is a controlled use of brighter colour tones through fabric. The grandparent’s room has a very classical touch to it to suit the age of the users. Rich dark veneer and a rusty tinge with gold accessories works as a magical combination for this room.

The children’s room has a fun, colourful theme and has been designed in blue and whites. One entire wall has been interestingly designed with a concept of light up white square boxes. The boxes can be used as storage compartments and the voids are used for display.

Clean and tidy are the adjectives to use in the guest bedroom. This is the only bedroom, which does not carry the white or beige theme. The straight line ledge bed clad in a light veneer is the highlight of this room. The olive green colour theme suits the room very well. With delight, Sonal further exclaims, “Every project irrespective of its scale and size is dealt with equal amount of attention, detail and passion.”

Chandrakant Patel, the man behind ‘The Stock Exchange’, Bombay building was recently unveiled by Actors John Abraham and Asha Parekh and was moderated by Viveck Shettyy – All India Media Cell Head, CGSI. The book charts Ar. Patel’s journey from his days of studying architecture in Europe to what he has become along the

way. From being Alvar Aalto’s protégé to designing iconic buildings in Mumbai under a few well-known architecture firms, to starting his own architectural firm, Ar. Patel documents his journey in his own words through this book.

The book is divided into chapters according to chronological events in Ar. Patel’s life. After a short introduction about Ar. Patel, the first chapter talks about his

decision to go to London to complete his RIBA examinations and his subsequent decisions to move to Sweden to complete a course in town planning, which led Ar. Patel to work under Alvar Aalto, one of the biggest personalities in the architectural world.

Due to personal reasons, Ar. Patel had to move back to Mumbai, where he worked for some time under BVS Iyengar and Karim Noorani & Associates, designing structures like the Shanmukhananda Hall, Usha Kiran and Embassy Apartments that have their own place of pride and honour in Mumbai’s architectural make up.

After starting his own architectural firm – Architectural Research Unit, Ar. Patel received the biggest opportunity of his life: being the chief architect on the project to redesign the stock exchange building in Mumbai, now known as the Jeejeebhoy Towers. The next chapter takes a detailed look at the Stock Exchange, Bombay – from the initial thought process behind the design to using techniques and processes that were quite ahead of their time to the effect of the ’93 blast on the structure to what an icon it has become to the Mumbai skyline today. The chapter goes into such detail so that it’s equally accessible to architecture students as well as anyone interested in the story behind ‘The Stock Exchange’, Bombay.

The last chapter is a study of some of Ar. Patel’s most significant works. From the extensive work he’s done with the Galaxy Group in Rajkot, Gujarat to all the work he has done for Dargah-e-Hakimi at Burhanpur, Madhya Pradesh.From various religious structures that he’s carried out pro bono to unique medical and residential structures across the country, Ar. Patel has a well-rounded portfolio, a glimpse of which can be seen in 4th Dimension Architecture.
