ne of the most-loved events in the design industry calendar, Clerkenwell Design Week is a three-day annual fes-

tival gathering Clerkenwell’s long-established design community together. Now in its sixth year, the event has increasingly become a must go-to showcase for the UK and international design community. Over 35,400 visitors attended this year’s event (19-21 May) 65% of these visitors were architects and designers. Sponsored by Renault and led by Show Direc-

sixth edition with over 300 UK and international design companies and over 80 local showrooms taking part. The name Clerkenwell comes from the Clerks’ Well in Farringdon Lane, where London parish clerks performed the famous Medieval Mystery Plays throughout the middle ages. In the last two decades, Clerkenwell’s unique variety of buildings have been transformed into central studio, showroom and workshop spaces, attracting an unprecedented concentration of architectural, design and creative practices. The global businesses that have made Clerkenwell their home have shaped the area into the UK’s most important generator of creativity and innovation. Serving an infinite variety of other industries easily accessible from across London, Clerkenwell has become home to a plethora of new media agencies, graphic and interactive design studios and more than 200 architectural practices - more per square mile than anywhere else on the planet. In addition, Clerkenwell houses over 60 design showrooms including world leaders Vitra, Poltrona Frau, Knoll and Steelcase.

Details of the Event Clerkenwell Design Week’s four main exhibitions were filled with a fantastic range of products on offer. The exhibitions named Design Factory, Platform, Detail and Additions offered everything from contemporary furniture and lighting, to cutting-edge materials and luxury accessories. 46 DESIGN MATRIX • JULY - AUGUST 2015

As part of CDW Presents, a series of street installations were situated across Clerkenwell;from jewel-like, multi-coloured glass pavilion by London-based architects Cousins & Cousins (with Gx Glass) and Monotype’s vinyl graffiti depicting a panoramic 19th Century view of London on an old prison’s wall. CDW 2015 also celebrated design and creativity by showcasing the latest innovations by designers and manufacturers from the UK and around the world. These were centred upon Clerkenwell’s leading showroom partners, from Moroso and Knoll, to Carl Hansen & Søn, Cassina, Arper, Vitra, Humanscale, Coalesse, USM, Brintons, Milliken and Scandinavian Business Seating. And the ever-popular talks series, Conversations at Clerkenwell, also boasted a starstudded line-up of speakers from the architecture and design world, from Sir Nicholas Grimshaw and Farrells, to Patrizia Moroso, Raw Edges, Nipa Doshi, Michael Young and Todd Bracher. CDW would not be complete without its Fringe programme, where local creative practices JULY - AUGUST 2015 • DESIGN MATRIX 47

The design philosophy for this project was to have bright gold lighting, purple wall tones and luminescent gigantic chandeliers. The banquet hall spaces are designed just as luxuriously as the exteriors, having backlighting and intricate formwork in pattern detail at all parts of the ceiling. Hence, the convention facility maintains a castle-like presence with its exterior and interior design. This convention centre is synonymous with majestic and lavish décor with a royal castle feel. Hemen took inspiration from Taj Mahal and adds the same influence to overall décor.

There are times when some design students not only learn from faculty but ensure in a proactive manner that faculty share their insights with them. Hemen Modi has been one such student. He had laid his learning priorities and stuck to it all along. When I could not give him time to see and critique on his work, he would drop in home after office hours to ensure that he gets his due feedback. It is a pleasure to have design learner like Hemen and a greater pleasure to have meet him in Toronto during my recent visit to witness his successful design enterprise called design twg. Stepping into the living room, one can see how each space is interconnected. The main door welcomes one towards sofa seating and the dining space on the other end. The sofa set, curtains, carpet and the wallpaper reflect the touch of earthen colours and create a pleasant ambience with the two burnt orange coloured chairs. An inviting dining space with wooden flooring and soothing look boosts the mood of those dining here. A minimalistic and liner pattern design in the ceiling makes the space look bigger from the entrance. The colour green in the kitchen, gives a fresh feeling and a lively atmosphere, as green itself is connected to the nature. The kitchen top is made of exclusive Brazilian granite and one will be certainly lured by the wall dado with the same granite and other areas with white artificial marble. All the cabinets are mechanised with branded fittings. A small island counter in the middle, completely finished in Corian, adds a highlighting element in the centre. Detailing further, Mihir adds, “We used a unique concept to connect the kitchen and the living area. A smart glass sliding door hides the storage unit and the kitchen is connected to the living area and separated from the same, once the sliding is closed. The open concept allows the cross ventilation of East West winds. ing space. The wall and the floor of the washroom here is in golden Portoro with some value additions, without unnecessarily incurring cost to the client, and perfectly matching their needs. Understanding the need and requirements of the client’s son, his bedroom was designed with young and fresh taste. The most simple and linear design gives it a sleek look with the colour concept of black, white and silver. The attached washroom to the son’s bedroom follows the same black and white concept to match the design concept. The picture of the lady in back painted glass and the mirror wall with writing will certainly grab one’s attention. “The colours black and white were suggested by Vaibhav (clients’ son), a young man in his early 25’s. Silver colour was later added to give a modern touch to this room. The wardrobe with sliding shutters of back painted glass, breaks the linear pattern and become a highlighting feature in the room,” says Shailee. The

of whites are extensively used to make the room bigger. Ambient warm white lighting adds a trendy touch. The hues of white and charcoal blue shades create an attractive decor. The interesting element here is the right wall, with shelves designed for soft toys and artefacts. The photo wall with strings and photos clipped to it was Vidhi’s initiative (clients’ daughter) to make the room more spell casting. Her powder room is designed using Italian marble and artificial marble with indirect lights, emitting from the back of the marble to light the floor and ceiling space, adding a floating effect. Let’s bade goodbye to the hustle – bustle around us and swirl into a delightful world, to unwind and relax in lush and peaceful vicinity, filled with the sweetness of nature.

Thole as his ally in the task. Through their discussions, the project burgeoned from being a mere sophisticated version of a tourist halt to one that would cater to families from the two aforementioned cities and corporates from the nearby industrial belt of Shendra. “The client’s intention was only to construct a permanent structure with a clean atmosphere, but we studied the location and the potential of the site and suggested him to make this space a stylish for people, who need a serene environment away from the pollution of the city. This project is an example of a good collaboration between the client and the architect. The result is a stylish space that caters to a variety of users and satisfies all. One is greeted with a green wall on entrance with a natural stone clad facade and on the other side; one would feel the soothing ambience looking at the Buddha placed on a water body, surrounded by lush green lawn. Entering the home, the drawing room welcomes one, and on the other side, an inviting dining cum living room with an overwhelming crafted human sculpture on a double height space with a skylight will mesmerise the guests. The dining area opens into a sit out on the eastern side, which allows morning Sunrays. steering away from the old design. The basement that earlier housed the servant quarters and unused spaces, was reinvented into a vibrant gaming and entertainment zone, a perfect getaway within the house. The stairway to this basement area is meant to be from the main hall on the ground floor and gives this area a secluded and snug definition. The same essence travels into the living room of the house that emanates the warmth and radiance of its inhabitants. The lively and vibrant play of the hues reflects the friendly disposition of the Karia’s, aptly captured by the keen eye of the designers. and innovative look. The living room spaces venture into the dining area and kitchen where space has been maximised to its utmost utility combined with aesthetic elements like the natural coloured artificial table top, use of earthen pastels and a walk-in storage area. The play of colours is evident in the children’s room that displays an interesting intervention of intelligently woven spaces with utilities. The intact furniture and the free play space bring the child friendly atmosphere into the room and the maple leaf mural on the head rest wall adds more warmth to the space. The architectural finesse and creativity of the designers is reflected through the unconventional sloping ceiling with a skylight effect given using an intricate ‘jaali’. The natural wooden flooring lends warmth to the room as the master bedroom spaces flow seamlessly into an adjoining open- to- sky sit out that makes the room breezy and comfortable. 96 DESIGN MATRIX • JULY - AUGUST 2015

The designers’ thoughtful sensibilities are also reflected in the way the sit out combines with the adjacent library and puja room. The three way mirrors in the bathrooms with warm, soft lighting and usage of mosaic tiles give a contemporary look to the space.A smart blend of unobtrusive spaces and functional utilities embellished with art and colour is what the Karia’s home stands for ! www.tanujsonalidesign.com

Katie Peters, who works with the Nepalese government on disaster risk, says “Reconstruction efforts must take account of future disasters”. She points out that while Nepal endeavours to learn from this tragedy to be better prepared, a failure to invest in “building back better” and improving infrastructure might prove costly for the country. esigned for a family spanning four generations, this apartment has been designed and styled to fit the personality of the clients extremely well,

besides being functional for everyday living in this vast age gap between the family members. The oldest member being the great grand dad at 85, to grandparents, parents and the cutest bundle of joy at age 2. Spreading over 6,300sq ft of space, the predominant use of grey and coffee shades on this 4BHK apartment will grab the onlooker’s attention. Each room overlooks the magnificent golf course and the lake view. The furniture and decor elements were curated personally by Monica and the home was fully styled to the last candles and fragrance in the apartment and whatever came in between, during the execution. Monica staunchly believes that her work is not confined to fix interiors alone, but has everything from vases to candle stands, to chandeliers to sofas, cushions, accessories, art and décor. Elaborating further, Hardesh adds, “It took Essentia a period of 4 months to conceptualize the design of the property and a bound script of all working drawings was handed over to Essentia’s in-house execution department to take over the actual interior renovation process. With a very high sense for the detailing in the design process and a team of extremely talented set of supervisors at site, we handed over this apartment in less than 8 months, considering that no work can happen on site beyond 7:00 pm or on weekends. The actual time on site was, essentially, not more than 5 months.”

Essentia Environments believe that beauty should not be a luxury available only to those select few lucky enough to be born with it, but one of the basic necessities. Grace and elegance are not just the sentiments to strive for, but rather they need to be embodied in all the things around us. Knowing this, they simply answer the inner calling of those who want to live artistically and in beautiful spaces that enhance the sense of being. The home of Sweety Chaddha is synonymous with innovation, style and sophistication with exclusive kitchen and bathroom fittings. The veneers, stone, Duco and Corian used in the overall space, exemplifies elegance and luxury. “The client along with her beautiful family was the driving force behind this beautiful outcome. Her passion and personal style resonate through the house,” adds Monica.

This colour palette provides plenty of scope to experiment with the look by way of changing accessories, as and when desired.

The smallest accessories often make the biggest impression. Let’s discover how accessories can make any space alive. Whatever you choose let your personality lead the way…

T

he scope of mechanics is expanding beyond traditional boundaries. Machines are becoming an integral part as a basic necessity. We use one or other of tool, daily for completing our tasks, be it at home or outside. Hence, attractive pieces like console mir-

ror with the gears and chain, a key holder stand, inspired from nuts and pencils and many more mind blowing accessories designed by the second year students of Nirmala Niketan, depicts a machine driven generation The design accessories crafted with distinctive concepts and tools, will suit your design aesthetics and make your environment, speak for you.

Royal Luminator

Gear Box

Imagine a floor lamp created with spare parts of a ‘Royal Enfield Bullet’. Alisha Shedge chose a 16mm gage galvanized steel (GS), which is used as a silencer of this bike and a 20mm thick ply piston of the same, as the stand for the lamp. The term ‘Royal’ depicts the brand of the bullet and the word ‘Luminator’ describes the lamp.

“Transmission” or a gear box is the concept behind a human faced letter box, designed by Divisha Mehta. The mechanism of gears is connected to each other, forming a human face. The tools used for this letter box are again the spare parts of a bike that includes a ball bearing, cog wheel, nuts, bolts and a bike chain. The antique golden look of this letter box, will certainly grab one’s attention!

Winged “I don’t know where my soul is, I don’t know where my home is, and I wish I could fly like a bird.” These are the lyrics from the song, ‘I wish I could fly’. While listening to this chirpy song, Jasleen Arora coined the concept of a console mirror. A mirror not only reflects a person’s physical being, but also personality, hence the design of the circular mirror has one metal wing on the right side, made from iron rods with two cycles gears attached to the outline of the hexagon bolts. The frame of the mirror is covered with motorcycle chain with antique gold powder coating. One, who looks into this mirror, will certainly feel like a bird, with one wing of metal representing strength and the other symbolises one’s hope.

Screwzine

Wall Clock

‘Screwzine’, as the name suggests, the concept for a magazine rack designed by Hussain Ratlamwala is derived from a screw. Shaped as a pyramid with a dim light, this rack is easily accessible from all 4 sides. It can be placed anywhere in the room, it’s compact and handy.

“Time flies over us, but leaves its shadow behind.” Time is the only thing that doesn’t wait for anyone in this world. No matter what you are; where you are, it’s the same for everybody. The clock is one of the oldest human inventions, meeting the need of consistently measuring intervals of time shorter than the natural units: the day, the lunar month, and the year. Pratiksha Sawant used perfect combinations of raw materials such as a chain ring, glass, acrylic and wood to create a wall clock with an attractive shape. Firstly, laser cutting was done in acrylic; later the spray painting was done using golden colour to add a royal look. This royal clock with metallic studs will be the centre of attraction, no matter wherever you hang it!

A Key Chain Holder Priya Gurung’s horse shaped key chain holder stands out for many attributes, it symbolizes. In feng shui the horse is associated with speed, strength, perseverance and nobility. This dual purpose keychain can also serve as a hanging show piece. This accessory is made up of unwanted spares of two wheeler bike with classy colour combinations and finished with Duco paint. This accessory can serve different purposes and it is uniquely designed for today’s modern world.

Pen Stand Tools could be any physical item that can be used to achieve any goal. After a lot of thought process, Saloni Shah took golf ball as her tool of inspiration. Golf ball itself serves the purpose of pen stand, which is made out of solid wood and is 4” in diameter. The process adopted for making of the golf ball was turning and carving to give it the needed shape. To increase the aesthetics of the accessory, a symbolic human figure made out of 6 mm ply is also used, which is in the position as to hit the golf ball with the stick. The accessory is kept simple but attractive. A lot of hard work resulted in a beautiful finished product.

His Master’s Voice

Book Rack

‘Design is the art optimized to meet the objective.’ ‘His master’s voice’ is basically a phrase that refers to a gramophone and Shalaka Karangutar’s design seems to be adopted from a ‘victor’s talking machine.’ Relating a gramophone to a coaster stand was not really what this designer had thought about in the initial phase. It is really difficult to mend two things that demand stipulation, yet it is the inspiration that counts.

Shaikh Zainab got inspired from painting tools to make a book rack. This book rack is a combination of pencil colours, cutter, paint brushes, painting knife, pencils, and colour palette and colour tubes.

A console mirror A console mirror is used to emphasize the foyer. Moulding a tool and creating a console mirror was a challenge for Niki Jain. The tool used for creating this one of its kind mirror is surprisingly the cycle chain. Using the shape of the chain, making it in one piece, and creating an illusion by concave mirrors and plain mirrors of different size’s has all together gave it a unique touch. The effect of gold and bronze colour enhances the beauty of it. Moving towards technology has become a part of our day to day life. Bringing out the creativity of making the accessory with a specific tool as an inspiration was the fun part of this assignment and the tools used by these young minds will indeed move you. www.nirmalaniketanpolytechnic.com JULY - AUGUST 2015 • DESIGN MATRIX 111

The design firm took a residential approach to Archer, with carefully curated art, furnishings, stored items, and keepsakes, to make guests feel as if Archer himself were entertaining them in his home. Whenever you enter a thematic restaurant, the space amazes you. The use of colours, light, the spatial elements, and the furniture engrosses you more and more in to the theme. Users association and interpretation of these elements connects them to the desired experience thought by the designer. But the experience doesn’t end here!

T

more. This requires a holistic approach of the designer from space to final products. In fact, a designer needs to address all the touch points between the user and the spatial elements to maintain desired experience. This need of thematic approaches is not getting limited to hospitality spaces, yet today due to awareness the client expects these approaches to be imparted in commercial retail spaces, formal corporate environments as well as in residences. With these kinds of trends, tutoring young design minds to address these trends becomes critical. The Interior Space & Furniture Design discipline at MIT Institute of Design practices an innovative course module on Lifestyle Product Design. The course focuses not only on space design, but also looks at overall experience of a user in to the space. So the design learner addresses space design, its look and feel, furniture selection and design lifestyle products contextual to the space. The experience is thought over thoroughly right from the point where a user enters the space, till he leaves the space. The impression of the space in users

mind created through the experience becomes the main focus.

Talking about the course, undergraduate student Shrinidhi Ramkrishnan says: Even though this course outcome results in creating lifestyle products- designing an experience, is the prime objective of this course. The whole experience is built for the user gradually, where using the lifestyle product is the pinnacle. This is how the whole course proceeds in a nutshell. Understanding the primary users is the vital step in our course. So we start off by interacting with the users, which gives us an insight of their likes, interests and

ly, a study of lifestyle products available in the market in terms of ergonomic factors, the materials and the manufacturing processes was conducted. Conceptualization was started with full-scale 2D and 3D drawings. Full scale exploratory models were made to study ergonomic factors. Different materials were explored during the process. Also, a colour palette appealing to the target audience was created. The concepts generated were tested and validated for ergonomic factors. Finally, the final concepts were refined with the help of the user response. Also, manufacturing processes were further studied in detail. Even though being a small aspect of an interior space, understanding nuances of designing a lifestyle product prove to be an important learning. The generation of lifestyle products undergo a design process to establish an experience in accordance to a specific interior space. The word of caution though is not to adopt a cut & paste approach. Today these spatial products have been gaining importance as they help in enhancing not only the beauty of a space but also hold an ability to change a formal-looking space into an informal one with just their careful inclusion.
